what an honor it is to be with you and there is no place I would rather be on a Sunday evening than with First Apostolic Church of Knoxville I want to say first and foremost thank you to so many to the great staff of First Apostolic Church from every singer to every musician to our security team to all of our technical staff and video and audio and lighting to every Usher to every greeter to every Sunday school teacher to every custodian there are so many that manicure and keep this the grounds manicured out side and just and I know I will have overlooked uh some uh Department as there are so many but thank you thank you thank you uh for making this day in particular uh so very special to so many uh you can only just look around and particularly this morning uh our Easter Sunday service so many guest so many friends so many family members and uh Bishop mcul said it so appropriately this past Wednesday night sometimes uh uh people like to take a jab of oh well uh we'll see at at Christmas and Easter uh kind of mocking that that might be the only two times that somebody goes to church and Bishop uh so uh beautifully told us that's completely the wrong way uh to view that and we view that as a as an opper opportunity an opportunity to plant seed needs and that might be the only time a friend a family member a guest is ever in this house and uh do we uh would like every single person and and myself included to be more devoted and and come more sure that's not my point but the the point being is after days like today uh people know that there is a place when they're hurting uh people know when uh things in their life might go astray that that there is a church there there's a there's a city set up on the hill that's going to be here that's going to be there to pray for them that there's going to the singing taking place that the the glory of God is going to come down and his name is going to be lifted up Hezekiah said I'm I'm going to continue to rebuild this Temple because there's some people scattered abroad but they're going to come home one day and that that's what we're doing every single service so I think every single one of you it's the highest honor to serve alongside of you uh I reiterate uh the the comments that have been made what a an unbelievable message we heard this morning from Pastor mul and I hope tonight's sermon will be a segue maybe to next Sunday morning and I give Pastor Whitley honor as well and it's just nothing like being with this church body and I love you all so much if you have your Bibles turn with me to John chapter 20 we're going to read verse uh chapter 20: 10 and then John 21 verse3 John 20:10 says then the disciples went away again unto their own home John 21:3 Simon Peter saith unto them I go of fishing they say unto him we also go with thee I want to preach to you for for a few moments tonight from the topic from the cross to the Grave to my day today from the cross to the Grave to my day today we're going to get right into it tonight of all doctrines and points of theology in the scriptures perhaps none are most more more significant to the Christian faith than that of the resurrection of Jesus Christ that's not to Discount the the importance of other doctrines for they are all essential elements of redemption in Christ and New Life in Christ Jesus however the significance of every other Doctrine would seem to fade absent in light of the Resurrection in this day earmarked and assuredly we celebrate the Risen Savior every day but this day in particular Resurrection Sunday Easter Sunday everything seems to fade in light of the resurrection and certainly the res resurrection of Jesus is the Capstone and Crown of the Christian experience perhaps there are many reasons why the resurrection is so vital to Believers and the following reasons for its importance are only a few first the resurrection of Jesus reveals that there is life beyond the grave and some people are perfectly content to believe that all cognizance and life end at death but death is actually the door to a brand new beginning at eternity and if we know Jesus Christ in the power of his resurrection then death leads us to eternal life however without the Redemption offered by our Lord the Shadows Beyond death's door are ominous in judgment and eternal condemnation second the resurrection is the Seal of power and authority upon the entire redempt process that God has the power to raise Christ Jesus from the dead exhibits that nothing is too difficult for him moreover it reveals that his power and authority Encompass the entire salvation experience and third and most significantly the resurrection symbolizes the spiritual work that Christ performs in the lives of all believers when he fills them with his holy spirit the death the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ are the essence of the good news the gospel Christ's death on the cross is symbolic of the need for a person to repent of their sins dying to the whims of our carnal nature and turning from a sinful lifestyle towards a new life in Christ Jesus the burial of Jesus symbolizes the need for a person to be buried in the name of the one who died for them in Christ Jesus and water baptism for the remission of their sins and the believer is then ready to receive this new life in Christ Jesus by the Holy Ghost which regenerates him or regenerates her and fulfills the symbol and ultimate purpose of the res of the resurrection and Paul reminds us in Romans therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the father even so we also should walk in newness of life and we celebrate on this day the empty tomb the resurrected savior The God Who manifest himself in flesh and conquered the grave and as Pastor mul so eloquently told us this morning because he got up now we can get up and now we have the power and because Jesus lives there is hope for believers to receive and because Jesus lives through him there's new life for the present and there's also eternal life beyond the grave and that is what we celebrate today life with Jesus prior to Calvary was somewhat predictable and unpredictable at times for the disciples through the Incarnation God subjected himself to human Lamentations he became subject of the same human needs as those around him while his disciples had witnessed his miracles and had firsthand knowledge of his power they had always been able to track him physically He Slipped Away from them on occasion but he was limited by his human body in the same ways that that their physical body limits all other individuals the disciples always managed to find him eventually but to this extent and in this context his disciples were his equal they walked with him and they shared meals with him and they slept where he rested and in those days Jesus was constrained by his human body just as the disciples were limited by them oh the newness the drama the excitement that each day would bring oh Jesus being alongside him walking next to God manifest in flesh could you imagine oh viewing the 37 miracles of Jesus and when we get to the Gospel of John he says oh if we wrote down everything that he did I suppose there wouldn't have even been enough books to record them or contain it weddings the dead raised the lame Hill blind eyes opened instant provision walking on water hearing him teach being looked upon with a certain level of importance by others because you were in the presence of the Messiah participating in this urgent Ministry in Roman and Jewish authorities with an eye on you because you were making a difference in Jesus oh this God manifest in flesh he he was going to tell you that you're going to receive power on high when I go away and then you are going to be responsible you are going to carry the message I'm going to entrust you to go out to the uttermost part not just the outer the uttermost I mean that's that's that's the ends of the Earth the uttermost parts of the earth man that's a high calling the drama surrounding the events unfolding with the death and the cross and the Last Supper experiencing this greatness oh a spiritual high is a description that ass surely fall short of describing what was taking place the Miracles the excitement the drama leading up to the climactic point point of the Resurrection this was the time for the disciples and right after the resurrection we read that Pastor mcul told us this morning they went to the tomb and and uh there was some discussion and there was some confusion and the tomb was empty oh and and and then the Bible tells us that they immediately went right to the Roman authorities and said let me tell you about this Risen Savior oh they they immediately begin to plot their their their plans for their travel missionary schedule assuredly oh they they begin to pull all their resources together and said oh boys let's get started we're going to the ends of the Earth no it says then the disciples went away again to their own home well what about what about Peter he told us this morning he was excited he was ready to fight at times he was going to take on the uh most powerful Empire to ever exist and then he was going to take on uh the uh guard of the high servant as well and you know it's Peter he he would go we we know the rest of the story he was probably right after the resurrection oh I remember him telling me that we were going to receive power on high I better get started on my my sermon for the day of Pentecost I bet that's what he did no it says Simon Peter said unto them well I'm going to fishing oh and the others they they tried to stop him and said no Peter you've been called to go to the uttermost parts of the earth oh you're going to receive power from on high you've seen the 37 miracles you you've seen the Miracles that can't even be Quantified in books people Peter oh you've been alongside him you've got a calling on your life no Peter they encouraged him and inspired him that no no we're we're called to go out here and and do this no it says that's not a bad idea we're going to go with you Peter John and five other disciples took a boat out on the Sea of Galilee they were among people and things that were familiar to them now you there's a lot of theological speculation and a sermon could certainly be preached that they were reverting back to things that were comfortable to them and maybe because of the the uh the indecision or the doubt or the weariness and certainly those are plausible possibilities but I present to you uh this evening that they were also Tradesmen they were fishermen and they had to work and they had to eat to sustain a living and having earned their livelihoods by fishing they were acquainted with and comfortable in that environment no I don't necessarily know what the next step is but I I I don't know maybe what the next week is going to hold but I've got to provide for myself and I got to provide for my family so the the tomb is empty I've got a lot of questions there's a lot of doubt there's a lot of uncertainty there's a lot of weariness but I'm I'm going fishing and the the other disciples said hey we're going too we got to do something and we got to eat eat I hope that's not too I hope that's not too practical for you tonight being professionals they probably fell into the rhythm of the work immediately words uh probably were not necessary they had performed these tast so often that they knew their roles and they responded instinctively that that night on sea was probably filled with quiet talk not about fish and not about fishing but that of friends pondering about their futures yeah yeah the the tomb was empty and uh uh you know Mary told us about an angel showing up and you know lightning and an earthquake but I wasn't necessarily there to see it and you know when we were with Jesus he how long was it going to be before he instilled it with this power are we supposed to already feel that did I interpret that correctly and you know I Peter's probably like you know me and Jesus didn't leave on the best of terms here at the end I hope he still uh accounts me for one of my uh followers and there's just a lot going on and we we always see the disciples when they're sainted and uh we look in at Rome Italy and we see uh the the the Vatican and we we we see all of these these statues and these these temples and these and all of these paintings of the disciples and these saintly individuals and sometimes we can forget that just moments after the resurrection they had to go back to work they had doubt we know the rest of the story is Pastor mol told us this morning but there was uncertainty on what the next step was likewise we come and prepare for Easter Sunday often times many months before but but in the uh lurgical calendar if you will of Christianity we start on Good Friday and there's this special celebration this holiday this holy day that and it's it's really special it's collectively celebrated across the globe and it's so encouraging to know that so many people are celebrating the empty tomb and we come into Sunday worship with such great expectation oh and you you know how there's nothing like when you see friends or family that you hadn't seen in so long and you go to Sunday dinner and Easter Sunday is just special it's just a a this special time and we acknowledge the empty tomb and oh did you hear the singing this morning and tonight uh it's joyous it it brings me joy and we're uh strengthened and encouraged by the public proclamation of God's word yeah I got fear but I've also got I've got joy and when I'm with everybody it's so great and we have faith in the promised power from God and rightfully so because iron sharpeneth iron and the problems in my life uh they when when I get into his house with everyone one else and especially on Easter Sunday oh I I Feel Like There's Hope of them being fixed and the uncertainty in my life I I begin to see a bit more clarity and this this Christian climactic high oh and I'm ready on this day after hearing the singing and after hearing the preaching and after being with my friends and my family oh the manifested body of Christ here on this Earth in 2012 24 I'm ready to go out to the uttermost parts of the earth and fulfill the Great Commission and just like the disciples though when Sunday night comes to an end I'm going to go home and [Music] then oh dear God forgive me for the words that are coming to my mind right now is that alarm clock goes off oh Sunday's coming but then Monday's coming after Sunday oh and when I hear that sound I don't hear the choir singing quite as jubilant as they were those words of that sermon just kind of begin to to fade who was at church yesterday and many of us will go hit that again a few more times but just like the disciples I go of fishing I go to work and sometimes in our lives it's difficult to reconcile these worlds of man I got the Holy Ghost living inside me I'm on this spiritual high and I I've seen a prophetic Vision over my life and I have these aspirations and I I want to go out and but I got to go to work you know I I got a family to provide for it's Monday morning and I I've got this calling on my life and I I've got these aspirations and I I know that God called me to go to the uttermost parts of the of the world and then there's these these great things that I I know that I'm called to do but it's Monday morning and I got to go fishing not non recreational fishing I I got to go to work to make to make a living I I've got to provide for my family and just as God would meet Moses and David as they went about their seemingly ordinary to an unsuspected meeting with God he does the same for for us and it's easy to overs spiritualize the will of God while we may tend to look for a supernatural encounter that lifts us up above the limitations of our mortal bodies God is looking for Rock Solid Faith lived out in the toil and in the sweat of everyday life the Apostle Paul taught that providing for the needs of one's family is essential to obeying the gospel first Thessalonians tells us and further emphasizes the necessity of getting involved in the business of life he said and study to be quiet and to do your own business and to work with your hands as we commanded you that we make walk honestly toward them that are without and that ye may lack of nothing the Apostle Paul oh we know about the Apostle Paul if you kind of added it up of the new Testament he's responsible for approximately onethird of the New Testament writings and oh my probably my favorite story is when the Apostle Paul goes into Athens Greece the Cradle of Western Civilization oh and he he goes right into the marketplace and to the highest court in the land and you know probably the Mediterranean Breeze is blowing out there and he goes right in front of the philosophers the stoics and the epicurian the the the greatest intellect of the time and here's this Apostle Paul going to give them a Bible study and says I'm going to tell you about that God that you think is unknown I'm going to tell you about Jesus Christ and him crucified and he's not an unknown God stepping in Athens Greece you talk about a ministerial highlight and then just a few verses later in the next chapter we see the Apostle Paul is making tents because he was a tent maker and he had to earn a living and he had to provide for himself and those around me we Elijah threw his mantle of anointing on Elisha while he was out plowing a field as the disciples heard the shore having labored all night a lone figure awaited awaited their arrival no one recognized him partly because they did not expect for him to be there even though they did not expect him and did not notice his presence he was still there when they were at Sea Through The Dark Night they could not know where he was but he knew exactly where they were and as Jesus called them to the shore he said have you any meat do you have anything to eat and Jesus asked him when they told him they had none Jesus instructed them to cast their Nets on the right side of the ship and when they did they had so much fish that they they couldn't even pull it in and John be to add things up and he said I've had a similar experience as as this before and it dawned on him that this oh this is the Lord he's out here where we're working at he's out here where we're fishing he's out here asking us for something that we don't have but he's asking us for something that he plans on providing so much for us that we don't even have room enough to receive I want you to know when you step into your workplace tomorrow when you step on your campus tomorrow when you step into your family whatever those relationships are tomorrow oh the choir is not going to be singing there you're probably not going to have uh preaching in your ears and you're going to be faced with some trials you're going to be faced with some heartache you're going to be faced with some uncertainty and some difficulty and God's going to ask you hey but what do you have for me and you're not going to have one thing but the whole reason he's asking you he's asking you for something that he's getting ready to provide for you oh yes I believe in miracles and I believe that God can show up in the Midnight Hour in the jail cell but I know also that he can show up at 2: p.m. on your lunch break wherever you're working at if you'll recognize his presence his will for you his will for you is to labor for your family and when you're providing for your family when you're providing for others it's not always this Supernatural depiction that we have but when you get to work when you hit that ground running you might not know what to do but God's going to meet you where you're at and he's going to give you dire for the next step would you give the Lord a great big hand the disciples failed to recognize Jesus immediately that morning they were just at work that's no different for us and millions of people as we Scurry about the Earth oblivious sometimes and I I preach to myself of the Lord's presence that sustains me and sustains the universe but the psalmist was Kealing aware of the universal omnipresence of the almighty the days following were like none his disciples had ever experience one by one they became convinced of his resurrection but it was not as before he was not just one of them all human constraints were lifted and the result was more than they could easily grasp intellectually or emotionally and Pastor M gave us a great background this morning on Mary Magdalene who went to the tomb first and she was without fear by all accounts of Roman soldiers and lightning and earthquake but the thing that I think probably troubled her the most is if you read about her she had had demons cast out of her you you think she was scared of a Roman soldier you think she was scared of lightning and an earthquake probably the thing that concerned her the most was that there was a savior that she had been around that had healed her and I bet her mind begin to wonder now that I'm no longer able to visibly see the embodiment of this savior are are these thoughts going to return is the enemy going to come back and attack me you think I'm scared of Rome you think I'm scared of that display oh probably the only thing on her mind was that perhaps now that that I that he's not here that that that enemy was going to come back and attack me and we we read that she begin to weep but in her weeping all of the sudden she heard Mary and she thought it was a garden there I've heard that voice before I've heard that voice before I want you to know whatever you're facing tonight whatever you might be dealing with oh yes not forsake the Assembly of ourselves together there there's nothing like being together and and worshiping and there's there's there's such a a unity and like I said earlier I reiterate iron sharpth iron but you're going to go to work and there's going to be times when you you feel all by yourself but I want you to know you have a savior who has his eye on you and he's watching you he's omnipresent he's where you're at and in those darkest times and those loneliest times if you'll just listen he's calling out your name to say I'm alive in your life I am right here beside you I I will never leave you and I will never forsake you Mary another instance we see two disciples on the road to EMAs they were kind of in a dark place in a a low Place walking they had heard about the resurrection but they were just uncertain and there was doubt and there was weariness and there was sorrow and they were talking about the events of the past day with a bit of a negative outlook over them I thought this Jesus was going to redeem Israel but then a stranger met them along the way and he didn't initially reveal himself to them but he began to start in Genesis and begin to soften their hearts by telling them about the word of God and he went all the way from Moses to the law to the Covenant promises and it it softened their hearts sometimes we only realize the potential that lies within Christ as we are LED through some deep valley of sorrow or some high peak of pain necessity is not only the mother of invention but it's also the that of Faith men who stagger beneath a load of grief will often look up through blinding tears to find the Savior watching and waiting through the storm persist and thunder Contours crash his voice and his presence can penetrate this traveler began to remind them of the word of God and it softened their hearts and they reached the village of Emmas and we can all think about those times in our life when we're just enjoying the fellowship of friends or enjoying the fellowship of family and we we just don't want it to end they were they were in such sorrow but this stranger had met them and began to tell about the word of God and they just didn't want it to end so they invited The Stranger in knowing that it was getting late and then that stranger took authority over the house and became the host of the house and he took the bread and he began to bless it and he began to give it and those disciples that I've seen those hands somewhere before I've seen that bread broke like that somewhere before and as those nail scarred hands reached across the table he said said My Savior My Savior is risen I serve a risen savior it wasn't some mighty display of his omnipotence though he's able to do that but their savior was revealing himself right there to them by the breaking of bread we read about his other accounts with the disciples Thomas which I kind of identified myself with him a lot of times if I don't see it there's not evidence if it didn't happen I don't care what you say Thomas Adam stated that he would have to see and feel the nail prints for himself if he if he truly did then he's going to reveal himself to me and I'm going to see it think about that I mentioned this a few weeks ago I I want to see the the nail scarred hands I I I want to see and feel his side but a glorified body if I was going to have a glorified body I would be absent of any of the wounds of this world you know it Botox it up steroid it up if I was going to have a glorified body but we see this glorified body body of Jesus still carrying the wounds of the crucifixion and Thomas would feel them and he would say my Lord and my God we have each and every one of us have a testimony I made mention of this a few weeks ago we got to be transparent about what the Lord has delivered us from this isn't about saving an image or Saving Face with somebody oh we got to tell where the Lord brought us out of we got to be an encouragement to one another oh this is what I was before the Lord Sav me this is what I did but he gave me a second chance and a and a third chance because his mercy and Grace is so great recognizing his voice have a relationship with him where I know when he's beginning to feed me and having that testimony if the musicians and singers would come at this time Jesus used the familiar to reveal the spectacular he used the customary to emphasize the miraculous sometimes we can have this illusion of ministry that you know God's called me to do thus and so and XYZ and boy it'd be nice to come over here and just pray for 24 hours a day and you know study nonstop yeah but you're going to go hungry after a while you know uh oh God's called me to move to this country that country and I I'm going to be a miss missionary well somebody's going to have to pay for it you're going to have to eat somebody's you're going to have to fly over there swim over there get a boat or oh I'm going to live by faith that's a lot of faith praise God don't get me wrong I I everybody has different circumstances yes God can provide but I I believe God provides for those who you know he's got a calling on their life and they're going to get up the next morning and uh keep working until he he gives me direction for the next step am I for prayer 100% am I for studying God's word 100% am I for missionary work and going out to every capacity to the uttermost parts of the of the world absolutely so don't purposely misunderstand what I'm saying tonight but the whole point is it's not always going to be this omnipotent display of of God's power and usually it's God meeting you right where you're at at your job and in your homes and at your school and with your family and it's usually at the darkest points of your life is when you can say hey I'm right here with you oh that don't have any sorrow and that's when he wipes the tears away from your eyes stand with me that's what we serve today we serve a God and that's the whole point of the Incarnation he became as you you and I to feel as you and I did and he knows exactly what you're going through right now he knows exactly what you're experiencing right now and sometimes we're like oh God's asking me to give this and God's asking me to do this and the whole reason he's doing it is because he's about to provide for you and you're not even going to have room enough to receive the great Prophet Elijah whom God had used to perform Miracles was not swayed by the impressive demonstrations of power that were lacking the presence of God he was not AED by the wind or the Fire or the earthquake he desired the presence of God not just the power when the Lord spoke to him in a still small voice he recognized his presence and prepared to meet him Psalms tells us whether shall I go from thy Spirit or whether shall I flee from thy presence if I Ascend up to heaven oh if there's some omnipotent display of God's power absolutely I believe in I preached about miracles last week he can do it and he's there and that's awesome let let's run the aisles but if I make my bed in hell I've made some mistakes in my life or there's some circumstances in my life that I barely made it into church today I don't really feel like running the aisles Thou Art there if I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea even there shall thy hand lead me and thy right hand shall hold me just like Mary Magdalene she when you've had Demons Inside of You lightning and earthquakes and Roman soldiers aren't aren't much of a thing to be fearful of oh but I just need that I need that Savior and you heard her name Mary God's presence fills the universe but whether it fills our own line is the choice that every one of us has to make sometimes we can get so busy or sometimes we can overlook this the significance of what and importance of what we are are doing oh working a job or working uh in whatever capacity maybe you're you're working within your family that's absolutely God called and God ordained and God will anoint you right where where you are at and his power is going to accompany his presence but we must recognize it if you would at this time bow your heads across this place as we celebrate the empty tomb today and we celebrate the resurrected savior we acknowledge that we serve a God so great yes he can send fire down and yes he can cause the Earth to shake and yes he can calm a a mighty storm oh but he can also call out my name when I'm all by myself and there's uncertainty in my life and and I'm worried about the that the enemy is going to come back and attack me and I'm I'm worried about what's going to happen uh on the next step and he can call out my name oh we serve a god oh and those those journeys of Sorrow at times when it seems like all hope is lost he's he's ready to meet us and he's ready to feed us we just got to recognize those those hands that are working in our life and say oh you know what I remember a couple years ago I was in this simul situation or I'm talking with a friend and they're giving me their testimony and I remember when uh this was happening to me and I want you to know that you can have Victory as well because if he healed me if he delivered me if he gave me Grace if he gave me mercy than he can for you as well maybe it's by giving my testimony yeah there's some wounds here I Oh I thought newness of life meant that that that that it's all new and with our fleshly understanding and our human comprehension that it would just be uh something that looks so aesthetic to the eyes no this newness of life it's let me tell you about these scars that I have yeah I I overcame that I I overcame the grave I I overcame death through the power of Jesus Jesus Christ if you have a need tonight I want to invite you at this time to take a step forward by faith tonight maybe you've been feeling some uncertainty and some doubt and weariness and the in the situations of life and maybe like all of us all of us sometimes can think oh I've got to have some some display of of power to come down and instantaneously reverse the situation can he do that yes but also he can comfort you in the moment he can speak to you and give you direction for the next step in the moment he can meet you right where you're at and say I'm the Risen Savior there's newness and there's life and be of good cheer and fear not and there's going to be Joy there's going to be joy in this house oh you're going to believe again oh you're going to you're going to go to the uttermost parts of the of the earth you're going to fulfill your calling but right now I want to prove myself to you I want to show you how alive I am in your life yes Jesus God we ask for your strength God we ask for your comfort Lord we ask for peace tonight Lord you know every situation God you know the desires of our hearts Lord we ask for Direction Lord let let you be alive in our life
