going to read one verse of scripture for our opening text Psalms 141 verse 2 and while you're finding that I Echo the same sentiments that have gone before me uh regarding just the great outpouring of prayers and giving and support in so many different capacities uh to the uh different efforts that we're involved in with here at the church and I know many of you all are involved in uh other capacities as well with different initiatives and it's a it's a high honor to be a part and I'm looking forward to Fall Fest to fill that truck up again and all of you ACS students and parents uh you can bring those donations in through your class as as well and out in the lobby uh if you want to bring your donations early before Fall Fest there's a place that you can do so as well at any of the services Psalm 141:2 says let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice I want to speak to you from this topic this morning refined renew renewed and refreshed at the altar refined renewed and refreshed at the altar could we pray at this time Heavenly Father we thank you today Lord we thank you for the opportunity that you've given us to assemble here together once again to lift up your name and to study your word and as the praise team just sang We believe that today that Miracle after miracle and we've gathered together by faith today knowing knowing that when we come before your throne of grace with boldness that we can come with great expectation knowing that you hear and see our prayer and Lord we believe that Miracles can take place on this day that's our acknowledgement we speak it out and we are proactively praising you for what you're going to do in this house in Jesus name and everybody said amen man refined renewed and refreshed at the altar we hear this term in a modern day 2024 The Altar and if you're here in church with us we might even ask well what specifically is an altar or you'll hear us say or give at the close of a sermon an altar call why do we come to the altar if you if you grow up coming you know it's just kind of a thing we do but can we put words to it on why we do the things we do or a alter invitation but as I look here these you know look a lot like Steps uh to me as well and it looks like carpet overlaid steps and we we call this an altar and we've purposefully set aside an area a sacred area and this is where the word of God goes forth and we know that collectively something happens wonderful when spiritually hungry people gather at the front of a church during uh singing or during prayer time or at the close of a service for a specific need or uh we'll come forward and have a prayer of faith prayed over us and we gather at the altar we give an invitation to pray it gives people an opportunity to be refreshed in the Holy Ghost uh we die to the Flesh and we renew our commitments to God and the spirit of God May deal with us to pray more fervently for the discouraged or for the lost or for the hurting and the spirit of God May deal with us to pray in a lot of different capacities and we're also fellowshipping together in his presence and that brings forth joy and it brings unity and it brings victory and we know that iron sharpeneth iron and there's it's special when we gather together and it's unifying and you're and you you have friends and you know sometimes the things that they've been going through and you still see them them them praising and living their life out Faithfully to God in un circumstances and and and trials of their life and you you you see these living breathing testimonies and it's a great encouragement and we know at at both church and home we must establish altars in our lives where we encounter God and children should be introduced to our altars uh beginning at Birth this is why we have uh baby dedications you know there's no salvic I was about to say salvific uh Sal which is a word but it's kind of confusing I can't spell it but it's not a a matter of Sal ation when you bring them uh to the altar but it's it's a dedicatory prayer it's it's getting the children used to being around this place it's installing in their minds from uh their their earliest memories that hey this is the place that you that you go to for all capacities of your life everything in your life should be centered around the altar Bishop uh mul tells the story and uh uh about uh uh Ryan l Ambert who's who who's now uh married and uh just just graduated from college but when he was a a young boy I guess three or four and was uh like our our kids do and I I I say that a hundred times amen now that run uh around the altar in the old Sanctuary uh Ryan had after church uh just jumped off the the top of it and yes this is a a a sacred area and we uh we it's it's it's important to have to to treat it with a great deal of seriousness obviously but uh uh his father saw him do that and brother Lambert was not too happy and he brought Ryan up to to Bishop mcol and and and had him say sorry for uh jumping off the Altar and Ryan sure did he said Bishop I'm I'm so sorry for jumping off the Altar and The Story Goes he turned right around on his way off and jumped right off again and of course this was the greatest uh thrill uh to Bishop and and and and yes we this is sacred and yes it is but uh but an Bishop knew what was happening this is where this is where you want your kids and I'm not telling all the kids to come jump off because they're going to do that anyway but we want to keep it sacred but at the same time you want to make it a place that they feel comfortable going to a place that their life is centered around a a place that they know that there's not going to be judgment cast on their life or it's a place that doesn't have a a stigma around it that it's uh not a place that I I feel comfortable going to I want to instill in them from the earliest age and when we have marriage ceremonies that's the a sacred time and that takes place at and you'll hear this uh in so many uh different ways at the altar you're taking vows before almighty God and making a covenant before him at the altar it's it's sacred the location obviously is not as important as the experience that occurs there the we don't have a monopoly uh on the presence of God around this altar you you can feel God's presence when you go out into the parking lot or at your home or but obviously there's when we're assembled together and there's a set aside sacred place you can see the value of it and I I would bring about this particular point and nobody get offended but you know when if if you're in the house of God and I'm not looking around to see who's not maybe uh worshiping and but if if your hands are always folded and you never come to the Altar and you never lift your hands or you never uh uh give God praise in a certain capacity and I know everybody worships different and and maybe you maybe you can sit there like that while the Praise Team singing and then you go home and just have a shouting Revival maybe that happens but maybe I I have to kind of uh of doubt that the the altar should be a place that that pierces your heart and convicts your soul or oh you're just preaching about emotionalism oh you just want a response oh ding ding ding you're 100% correct because I have an intellectual understanding that I wouldn't be where I'm at if it wasn't for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ if he didn't bring me out and make a way when there was no way or comfort me when I was alone that I just can't sit there and say oh that was that was a that was a good worship set today a little loud for my taste but uh uh that was a nice word maybe you go home and worship and maybe you get in your prayer closet and rain down the power of God but yet come into His presence with everybody else with the uh the singers singing and everything maybe that happens for you maybe I I don't want to judge I don't want to judge but the one thing all altars have in common is there are places where people have Encounters of God it could be the side of a bed it could be a kitchen chair a bench the edge of a church PL form wherever we meet God becomes an altar the Hebrew word for altar misia which means a place of Slaughter or sacrifice the Old Testament altar had four corners at which to tie down the sacrifice and the Apostle Paul uses this language in the New Testament the New Covenant talking about our bodies being a Living Sacrifice that we must be tied down our our our flesh goes to the altar to Die the altar holds a a prominent uh uh Place obviously in scripture the word altar or altars plural in the King James version of the Bible is used 435 times the first time we see the mention of an altar is with Noah he stepped out of the Ark in this fresh new world and it was almost as he this world was Reborn by the grace of God and God had sustained him and his family throughout the Earth's upheavals and the onslaughts of giant waves and the unfamiliar sound of the rain so he had obviously much to be thankful for and we read that Noah determined that before he built a home for himself uh before he built a shelter for the flocks and herds he built an altar first and foremost and we read in Genesis 8:21 that when God received that Aroma from Noah's altar that it was a sweet Savor his experience with God at the altar brought him and his family blessing and assurance that they could not receive from any other means that it's a point of contact it's a place to meet God we read then as the story continues to unfold throughout the Old Testament through from uh from Noah on to Abraham that he left his home where he was at he left uh his resources he left his home he left the Pagan worship and he stepped out by faith and the call of God inspired him to do so and he built an altar and this was passed down from Abraham to to his descendants that they knew God personally they called him by name they knelt and built altars to express their devotion and dependence to the one true God this God that Covenant with them and promising to make them a great nation and showing them and continuing to reveal to them the inherited promised land that was to be them and we know the story of now Abraham to Isaac how Isaac went up and was going to be the sacrifice but a ram was uh revealed itself and Abraham said I I will call this place and and this Jehovah Gyra the god that's going to provide for me and Isaac was definitely thankful for that Jehovah Gyra and and then Isaac built an altar and Isaac continued on with this relationship and on with this Covenant no knowing how to build an altar like his dad and knowing how to build an altar like his granddad and the blessings and the Covenant promises and the power and the sacredness and the sacrifice at an altar would just continue on down from generation to generation and you would get to Jacob and Jacob would uh deceive his family and he would get on the run for his life and you know this is the great grandson or some kind of uh far off from Abraham and uh you know he's got a a pretty powerful lineage here he's got a pretty great inheritance and he had heard about this altar but for whatever reason the circumstances in his life the flesh got a hold of him and he deceived his family and he was on the run for his life and in the middle of the night he found a place and they poured some more oil apped me use my own words and I know that I'm guilty I know that I don't have the relationship but I was dedicated around an altar I've I've heard the altar talked about and God if you could meet me in this place if you can meet me in this place like you did for my dad and like you did for my granddad and like you did for my great Granddad I I know I'm I'm not worthy and I know I'm deceitful but God I if you'll meet me right here then I'll call you my god oh and we see this powerful story at bethl where God meets him in his darkest hour and you can read on later in his life when uh he became and had vast wealth and but he' begin to intermingle with uh with with uh Idol worshippers and God called his whole family to repentance and and he called him away from the riches and the resources and then he said go back to that place where I first met you and that bethl the definition of it uh means holy Place God made this this uh this this guy on the run the the place where he was hiding out he this place where he was guilty this place this this place where uh everybody else was against him God made that instance a holy place and we see the Reliance on the altar on down from generation from generation perhaps Jacob's past deviousness and guilt had kept him from feeling close to the almighty but his heart was open that even in my darkest hour Jehovah would provide these all altars commemorated special times and places not only for Jacob but places that were also significant to Jehova because God was continuing to reveal himself to them God marks those SES where we consecrate our lives and make vows to them he he can make the worst of situations and the worst of places serve them absolute greatest of purposes and what might seem in our life as tragedy The Darkest Hour no hope God can make that a holy place it's a place of sacrifice and death we're prone to forget that an altar is not just a place of Covenant and blessing it's also a place of submission and death to self-will we often use the Expression going to the altar that that that means that a person might be seeking repentance or or at times an individual May sense it compelling to draw closer in the relationship or sometimes we might feel burdened to to to pray for someone else or or or or pray for a specific need and we see this type of intercession with Moses praying for the people and the Apostle Paul later on uh saying that he lamented uh and had wanted the heart for Israel for I wish that myself were a cursed from my Christ for my brethren and we see these different instances of the altar you've got Noah who who by all accounts was giving gratitude and praise and worship and we see Abraham and the Jehovah Gyra how God uh provided we see Isaac how he was uh the provider and Jacob the the place that when he was in his darkest hour and Moses and Paul the submission and and and death of self-will this intercession the altar serving all of these different and distinct purposes the altar serving whatever need that you have in your life and that's why we've got to get it through our minds and I know that this church does that there cannot be any stigma around this altar at all and don't let it ever come out of our mouth don't let it ever come out of our mouth oh that person needs to find an altar she needs to find an altar he needs to get to the altar no you need to get to the altar every single person every single person needs the altar every single individual you don't spiritually mature the altar you don't reach a a specific tenure where I don't have to go and find the altar anymore maybe you do it maybe may may maybe the altar is at home may maybe it's at home you don't have to come to this one I don't don't quote me as saying that you only have to come to this altar but maybe you never come to this one and you do it at home I'm not judging but you have to have an altar you you everybody say me I have to have an altar the altar has to be the most preeminent place in in my life it's the place that I've got to kill my judgmental flesh it's the place that I got to that I've got to put all of my needs out that's the place where I commune with God so I ask you this morning and I do it with a smile on my do you have an altar when's the last time that you step to the altar this is only for every individual when I tell you this I preach to myself where's your altar do you have one if not why is it Comfort is it because you don't need anything because there's scripal precedent that you need to go to the altar to give God praise as well and give him thanks as well in fact it was the first altar built it's the place I go when I need provision it's the place I go when I need comfort when I'm in a dark place in my life I know that God is going to meet me there it's a sacred place it's a holy place it's where the Miracles take place there should be no Stigma somebody come oh she's coming to the altar again shame on you he's coming to the altar again shame on you you need an altar [Applause] I feel like Pastor Whitley right and this brings us to the altars of the Tabernacle before the New Covenant which foreshadowed all of this pointing to the Messiah Jesus Christ who would be the embodiment God manifest in flesh fulfilling every characteristic in every need calling out on that name Jesus with all of these descriptions and characteristics the Tabernacle was the portable Earthly Dwelling Place of Yahweh the god of Israel it was used by the Israelites from The Exodus until the conquest of Canaan and Moses was instructed at Mount Si to construct and transport the Tabernacle with the Israelites on their Journey Through the Wilderness and their subsequent conquest of the promised land after 440 years Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem superseded it as the dwelling place of God when Moses had completed the work on the Tabernacle he set it up and offered incense at the golden Altar and a burnt offering on the Brazen Altar and it pleased God that everything was done just as God commanded him and when the cloud of God's glory descended everyone knew that he had come to dwell in tabern no big deal just God's presence that you're in the Tabernacle the creator of this world his presence with you uh the one who parted the sea uh the the one who brought Mana to the people the the one who sent the plagues H he's there his presence is there there were two altars two altars were used in the service of the Tabernacle that was the Brazen altar the altar of burnt offering which stood inside the court at the gate and the golden altar altar of incense which stood in the Holy Place immediately in front of the veil there were two altars but their functions were distinct yet they were intimately connected because the activities of the latter the altar of incense were based upon what took place in the former the burnt offering the Brazen altar the incense altar owed its standing to the blood of atonement so get this with me there's two altars and if you have that um a little map deal there that'd be perfect there's two altars the AL alar of burnt offering big Brazen Altar and then inside right in front of the veil you have the altar of incense two altars but you could not have the lad without the former okay so there's two altars the altar of incense and just by its name doesn't that sound great and just by the others name the altar of burnt offerings that's sounds Brazen and horrific the Brazen Altar and the altar of incense it was connected with sacrifice which had already been offered to the altar of incense no animal sacrifice was ever placed on the altar of incense but the fire which had consumed the sacrifice on the Brazen altar would be the same fire that taken from the altar of burnt offering to the altar of incense you couldn't just skip the first part and go to the altar of incense you first had to go to the altar of burnt offering okay there's two altars the sacrificial altar the Brazen altar just that term Brazen you know it's like that was supposed to be funny it was an imposing piece of furniture it would hardly have been attractive to a Hebrew considering what it symbolized upon entering the Gate of the Tabernacle the worshippers saw this imposing brass altar it Rose 4 and 1/2t above the ground and it span 7 feet across with its width and breadth its surface was stained by the blood of countless sacrif IES smoke ascended continually ashes accumulated and were Swept Away there was no need to explain the significance of something so commonplace for centuries Lambs had died for the sins of the nation inside the walls also of the temple two L as we got to the temple two Lambs died every day one at 9:00 a.m. and the other at 300 p.m. and it shall be in Exodus tells us a regular burnt offering throughout your Generations at the entrance at the tent of meeting before the Lord and when you entered in you could smell it when you entered in you could hear it you would know that a lamb had been or was being sacrificed for your sin it's what brought the respect it was what brought the reverence it maintained the integrity and humility of the of the people and it also gave them Vision before I get too high and mighty there there's something innocent that's dying because of my wickedness there's something innocent that's dying not because of oh somebody else or or that that person needs some no it was because of of me its surface was stained and it's what brought the respect it maintained the integrity and humility and it was the vision it was the reminder that something innocent must be the payment for my sin and when the lamb died a priest would sound the shaffar and it sounded about like this and this was a Ram's Horn back to the story of Abraham and even people who didn't witness the event maybe they were outside of the range being able to smell it or maybe they were outside the range of being able to hear it when they heard the sound of that chauff far may maybe they were working or maybe they were going about their daily lives but when they heard that sound it all of the sudden it it was supposed to pierce their heart to say oh my god oh something innocent something that doesn't deserve to die is dying because of me twice a day every single day something was dying for me it had been a sacrifice marked by Blood but if there was no blood there was no incense if there was no stench there would be no Aroma if there was no sacrifice there would be no substitution for the sin if there there was no ugly there would be no Beauty we we see this with athletic teams going after championships they'll say Blood Sweat and Tears knowing that they're not going to be able to accomplish this particular feat without all of the hard work and all of the offseason training and the sacrifice and the work or or or we see these successful individuals that uh man I I'd like to I sure would like it must be nice to to be you to to be so successful yet they they lack the understanding to see all the years where that individual may have pounded the pavement in cells and worked overtime and worked multiple jobs just to make their their dream happen and you only see the success or you don't see some of these Builders and and construction workers they they got their billboard now and they they got their truck now but you don't see the moments when as Dave Ramsey said you're I want you to eat rice and beans beans and rice and the only time you should ever see the inside of a restaurant as if you're uh as if you're serving tables where you're saving up that money and you're going without for a long period of time that often times in our especially in our modern day we only see the outcome after the success has taken place and just like can happen to us even though the sacrifice was going on and even though know they knew it was an important thing but when you hear that chaar twice a day every day probably throughout the year when it when they first heard it and maybe that first month or the those first two months you know it really got your attention or or if there's a threat of a neighboring Kingdom or or we're in a specific we're we're in a specific uh uh need over uh something dire in my life oh well and I hear that that that that chaar you know that's that's where my faith lies and that's what that's what gets me that's what gets me going and it brings the respect but I have to imagine when everything was going good when everything was peaceful and I had food on my table and I had shelter that maybe the sound of that chaar just just begin to kind of fade fade out yeah I hear it today but that that that plays everything and everything is good and you just kind of continue on and you just kind of continue on throughout the day and it no longer means what it once did but this is why they would have Passover as well because this would take the sacrifice outside of a restricted area outside of the Brazen Altar and that lamb would have to come in the home and be part of the family and you would develop a relationship with him you would commune with it you'd probably name it it would it would it would play with your children and it would become just part of the family but there would come a time where that innocent lamb would have have to die and it died because of your sin and no longer would it be the sound of a chaar no no longer would it be a stench that maybe on the periphery that I I just get a little bit of whiff of that I can put to the side but it would come into your home just to keep you reminded that you that you need an altar that you've got to keep the altar the most preeminent place in your life that yes the the altar at church is important but you better have an altar in your home you better have that reverence and that sacredness in your home it's it's the place where you commune with the almighty it's the place where you commune with Jesus Christ it should be the most important place and that lamb would die because of your sin that largest piece of furniture in the Tabernacle that braze and altar it was fearsome it was the bloody symbol of judgment and here at the sacrificial altar was the Judgment of God against sin here a guilty sinner could find forgiveness through the substitutionary death of an innocent but there was another altar the altar of incense but before you got to that altar of incense before that sweet smelling Aroma it's going to go up to almighty God you had to First give a sacrifice be before that sweet Aroma of Praise got to the nostrils of God that process of the altar you first had to go through the altar of the Brazen altar but but but you weren't done yet and while ministering at the altar of incense the priest was closer to God's presence than at any other location this altar stood directly in front of the veil and every day a levitical priest took fire the same fire from that Brazen altar that fearsome piece of furniture where it seemed like everything on it was dead everything on it was stench everything on it was blood and it was a a gruesome place but he would take the very same fire from that Altar and he'd get over to the altar of incense but you you couldn't you couldn't just go put your own fire in the altar of incense or you would die but God would take what was dead what you gave he'd take that sacrifice he would take those ashes and and then it would be taken over to this second Altar and then all of the sudden out of the muck out of the stench out of the blood Something Beautiful something with a sweet Aroma something giving God glory and praise would all of the sudden begin to rise up and he said oh Moses you've done exactly as I commanded I know it wasn't easy given that sacrifice I know you didn't understand it in the moment oh I I I know there was a lot of blood and and uncertainty and it was gruesome but it's not over that's not the end because if you be faithful and do as I commanded you there there's a second altar of incense where the atmosphere is going to change musicians come the functions were distinct oh but they were so intimately collect uh connected you couldn't have this beauty but without the ash our most Earnest prayers our most sincere Praises are ineffective andless we first visited that braise and altar of repentance and submission only then can we get to that altar of incense first and foremost today we have an altar that the sacrifice has already been given if you need to repent in this house I've got good news for you it's the Gospel of Jesus Christ if you need to turn your life over to the Lord John the Baptist said Behold the Lamb of God who came to take away the sins of this world and because of that the sacrifice has already been given so you can step in to that altar of incense with the sacrifice already given and say God forgive me of my sins Lord let me turn away from my wrongdoing and God is going to forgive you we have our altars of worship the fire of God never falls upon altars that have no sacrifice Paul said that we have to be living sacrifice and genuine worship at the altar still comes with a costly undertak taking it's going to cost to to have a move of God in our lives it's going to cost us pushing the plate back a little bit it's going to cost us getting on our knees it's going to cost us reconciling and our pride with some other individuals that I've got a disagreement with it's it's called Unity it's it's going to cost me something it's going to cost it's going to cost you stepping out of your comfort zone it's going to cost not just going through things things as they are as normal it's that sacrifice getting a hold of your life so I ask you has the sound of the chofar diminished in our lives in order for me to worship and in order for me to praise does every single thing have to be lined up going perfect every teac crossed every eye dotted uh this song at this time uh what does that look like for you do you have an altar in your life has the sacrifice diminished in our life or do we remember the sacrifices that were given for us to get where we are today or are we satisfied just to see the smoke in the ashes of past experiences or are our lives on fire for God right now every morning and every evening a lamb was sacrificed at the temple and over time no doubt it would become mere ritual but now is the critical hour and we cannot neglect our altars stand with me we've got to have a Passover in our homes where we take that sacrifice home with us and we've got to be like Noah who we build that altar before anything else in our life I want you to notice something as we are all feel familiar with the story of David Goliath 1st Samuel 17:6 States for 40 days Goliath the Philistine came forward and took his stand in the morning and in Eve many theologians suggest that Goliath purposely came out and taunted the Israelites at what time in the morning and in the evening during the morning sacrifice and during the evening sacrifice and I believe across this house this morning there may be some individuals under the sound of my voice that you're having trouble getting to the altar or finding God's presence in your life because you're listening to the sound of the enemy and the enemy has you so d distracted the enemy has you so distraught the enemy has evoked so much fear with his talking and coming out at the same time every day it's a purposeful attempt to prevent you from getting right here and I would encourage you today to not listen to those goliaths in your life it's nothing more than a distraction it's the same thing as that kind of stigma I was talking about that's a trick of the enemy for us to kind of try to passive aggressively turn on one another and have me think or what is this person going to think if I lift my hands or what's that person going to think if I go to the altar are they going to think I've done something bad are they going to think that I'm just doing this all over again who cares you're going to commune with the almighty God and we've got to have spiritual maturity not to Echo or let those words ever exit our mouth because your family depends on it your neighbors your community it says we can intercede on their behalf let me say this last thing this last thing your life a situation in your life might be down to [Music] ashes but you've remained faithful or maybe you're asking yourself myself right now I haven't been so faith maybe you're like Jacob who said I'm I'm guilty but God if you'll meet me here but you've given praise and you've worshiped in the storm it's ugly there's a stench but I want you to know that there's hope in the Altar and I want want you to remember that the latter is dependent upon the former and through your life being a Living Sacrifice by you being here right now is a testimony oh you you don't know I I'm guilty and I I'm I'm going through this you're here aren't you that means you believe don't you that that that means something you're here you made it but the latter is dependent upon the former and through your life being a living sacrifice through the Redemptive blood of Jesus Christ I believe I know he's going to take that same fire that same fire that's in with all this stench and in with all the blood and in with all the mck and end with all the gruesomeness and he's going to take that same fire because of your faithful and all of the sudden God's going to begin to get Glory all of the sudden the atmosphere is going to change all of the sudden you're going to find yourself surrounded by a sweet Aroma of incense and in your life today transformation can take place because of you finding an altar I'm not going to give a formal altar call this morning I'm going to say it's open it's open what are you waiting for what are you waiting for nobody getting a fight getting up here please but what are you waiting for God is here his presence is here your needs are ready to be met here it's a holy place
