1969. pastor billy mccool song director charles richmond assistant pastor ira mckinney sunday school superintendent dean wilson pastor and profile things could be worse the other night at our monthly youth rally i was called to lead the singing everyone seemed to respond in true spirit of worship i sat down on the platform quite satisfied with the service when my ten-year-old son came marching upon the platform and handed me a note from his mother not wanting to draw too much attention i slowly and casually looked at the note quote honey you have candy on the seat of your trousers said the nerve-shattering note i sat somewhat stunned thinking of the chocolate-coated baby ruth my son had enjoyed munching on the way of the rally i thought of all the trouble in the world college riots war racial strife all those bad supreme court decisions lately and on top of all this here i sit in a youth rally on the platform with a full house with a note in my hand informing me i had candy on the seat of my britches i tell you life can sure get complicated my panic turned to vengeance as i eyed my carefree 10 year old offspring sitting on the front seat i was thinking of some well-chosen words i was going to use as i laid down the law on the way home about no more eating candy in the car i was almost lost in thought as i mentally reprimanded my son suddenly a lump came up in my throat as i thought of how earlier that same day my wife and i sat at our table and unsuccessfully fought back tears as we talked to one of the young men in our church who had just received his induction notice from military service a smile came across my face as i thought how fortunate i was to have a happy healthy typical 10 year old boy so quickly candy rappers can be replaced by lonely letters from far away how fast the years fly so soon our little ones become grown-ups and are forced to leave the nest continuing on and uh january the 5th 19-7 do you remember the following are memories that were things i i believe sister brenda perry certainly remembers some of these things and we're going to continue with our study of common questions concerning apostolic doctrine last week we studied the subject the lion and the lamb and we got a few pages and i'm going to uh review just a little bit now let me say this i want to invite everyone to be here on wednesday night i like teaching the bible said go out in the highways and hedges and compel them to commit that my house may be full and i appreciate each one of you being here tonight and we do have a excellent crowd here for tonight but next wednesday night and every wednesday night i'd like to see each one of you here we're glad of course to have pastor whitley home and pastor mark mccool told us that brother anthony he is preaching a camp meeting down in mississippi and i told you last week that's the price we pay the bible said jesus said himself freely you receive now freely give and it's more blessed to give than to receive let me quickly review the law and uh some folks have a problem with this in revelation we're quickly reviewing us we'll try not to get bogged down revelation 5 1-9 and i saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written and on the backside seal with seven seals and i saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice who is worthy to open the book and loose the seals thereof no man keep this in mind no man in heaven nor in earth neither under earth was able to open the book neither to look their own and i wept much because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book neither to look their own and one of the elders said to me weep not behold the lion of the tribe of judah the root of david have prevailed to open the book and to loose the seven seals thereof and i beheld and lo in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts and in the midst of the elders to the lamb as it had been slain and he came and took the book out of the right hand of him to set up on the throne i got an interesting phone call a few days ago my younger brother spencer mccool pastors in in michigan he called me and he said bill i i don't know where this came from but he said in my documents i've got hundreds of documents that said this came up today and i don't know for sure where it came from but he said i want you to read it say it is fantastic reading and and he started reading my book common questions he started reading common with this question a question i said spencer hold it hold it you're reading my book i wrote i didn't know for sure but back in the back in the earliest i can find out was uh in uh uh not 77 but 27 way back in the 70s and but anyway it's circulated and since then we've had several printings and i've been on the lookout we didn't we didn't take the time to date things like we should have we've uh we have had uh printings uh several reprints of of that book and uh we should put a date on everything but we in fact our little voice of pentecost paper that we sent out weekly i found out has become one of the most valuable thing concerning the history of our church it tells so many things that happen deaths and births and weddings and hospitalizations revivals camp meetings it's amazing the things that that i'm reading that i'm i'm calling it tidbits from the past tidbits from the time in past so i wanted to tell you that because i caught my interest and because he didn't know who wrote the book until i didn't know who wrote the article i'm not sure how it got uh on his computer either now then the quick answer as the veiled beauty of a bride slightly obscures the immaculateness of the wedding garment her facial features neither clearly seen are fully hidden but the mystery of her loveliness makes her more lovely so are the preceding verses concerning the nature of our dear lord the apostle john wept because no man in heaven nor on earth nor under the earth was able to take the book and read and loose the seals but then one of the elders said weep not behold the lion of the tribe of judah hath prevailed to open the book notice no man in heaven nor earth was worthy but the lion was worthy and able why look at the next verse and i beheld and lo in the midst of the lamb and he came and took the book out of the hand the right hand of him that set up on the throne but wait verse 5 said the lion would take the book verse 6 and 7 said a lamb took the book what no man could do the lion of the tribe of judah who is also called a lamb was able to accomplish the symbolic lion and the emblematic lamb represent the dual nature of christ the task required the quality found in no man hence it took a dual-natured christ possessing divinity and humanity the fury of a lion and the meekness of a lamb very god and very man as much man as if he was not god and as much god as if he was not man dissolving the diametric differences of judgment and mercy resolving the question of grace and law reconciling the sinner to a sin hating god he was the central figure of time and eternity jesus emmanuel god with us the word made flesh he was judah's lion of judgment yet he was john's lamb of meekness do you understand where we're coming from on that because that causes a lot of people to to stumble and wonder the the meaning but that is in the book common questions concerning apostolic doctrine now we're going to start where we left off last week and we're not reviewing everything and uh first chronicles 17 and 20. oh lord there is none like thee neither now they have all kind of uh ideas come up that uh who took the hand god said on the throne the son come and took the book out of the hand out of the father and they've got got a a gigantic imagination but it is a scriptural because first chronicles 17 20 oh lord there is none like thee neither is there any god beside thee according to all that we've heard with our ears psalms 86 10 for thou art great and does wondrous thou art god alone is that pretty plain is that pretty explicit to understand trinitarianism is inconsistent in the light of the following scriptures isaiah 44 6 thus saith the lord the king of israel and his redeemer the lord of hosts i am the first and i am the last and besides me there is no god can it be any plainer than that revelation 1 8 i am alpha and omega alpha and omega is the first in the last letter of the greek greek alphabet alpha and omega the beginning and the ending saith the lord which is which was and which is to come the all the all mighty revelation 1 11 saying i'm alpha and omega the first and the last common reasoning renders the verdict there can be but one almighty the scripture usage of the mathematical one is clearly indicative of the inconsistency of trinitarianism mark 12 29 and jesus answered the first of all commandments is hear o israel the lord our god is one lord galatians 3 20 now a mediator is not a mediator of one but god is one first corinthians 8 and 4 as concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols we know that an idol is nothing in the world and that there's none other god but one first timothy 2 5 for there is one god and one mediator between god and men the man the man christ jesus james 2 19 thou believers that there is one god thou does well for the devils also believed and trembled the devils know and believe there is but one god if god is one he cannot be three it is a mathematical absurdity to say that one god is three gods first john 5 and 7 says for there are three that bear record in heaven the father the word and the holy ghost and these three are one john is not saying that one plus one equals three but rather he the mathematical one is raised to the third power i.e one multiplied itself three times one times one is what one one times one is one one times one is one one times one is one so this is what we're saying there are three thereby record in heaven the father the word the holy ghost and these three are one trinitarianism is inconsistent in its logic co-equality of two or more divine almighty persons is illogical the doctrine of the father and the son being co-eternal is illogical in as much as it requires the son to be as old as the father and the offspring to be the same age as the original trinitarianism is illogical in that its hypothesis creates a paradox of having divine person number one the father and divine person number three the holy ghost both the father of divine person number two jesus stop and think about it just a moment which one was the follow of jesus john 3 16 for god so loved the world he became he gave his only begotten son now the holy ghost overshadowed mary she conceived and brought forth the son and yet he was called the son of god matthew 1 18 now the birth of jesus christ was on this wise when as his mother mary was espoused to joseph before they came together she was found with child of the holy ghost trinitarianism is inconsistent with the word of god in as much as it creates an atmosphere in which its exponents are forced to baptize using a formula which was never used in the bible the trinitarian formula of baptism which was instituted in 321 321 a.d at the roman catholic uh council of nicaea they established no one in the bible was ever baptized using the words father son and holy ghost read it cover to govern but i can show you many scriptures where they were baptized in the name of jesus in the name of the lord trinitarianism theology denies its proponents the liberty of baptizing or being baptized in the name of jesus which makes trinitarian theology in direct conflict with the following scriptures acts 2 38 repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the remains of sin you shall receive the gift of the holy ghost acts 8 16 only they were baptized in the name of the lord jesus acts 10 47 48 can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized which have received the holy ghost as well as we when they heard this they were can any man forbid wealth he shout and be baptized which have received the holy ghost as well as we and he commanded them he didn't suggest he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the lord acts 19 and 5 they were baptized in the name of the lord jesus first corinthians 1 13 is christ divided was paul crucified for you were you baptized in the name of paul i told you about the night there was a a a i don't like to call denomination names but it was a well-known denomination in this part of the country a preacher's wife came to the altar seeking the holy ghost and all of a sudden she stopped and motioned me down to the altar where she was praying and she asked me the question brother mccool isn't there a scripture says something about is christ divided and i take up my bible and open it up to first corinthians 1 13. is christ divided was paul crucified for you or were you baptized in the name of paul she said what does that mean i said what do you think it means was paul crucified for you i know who was crucified for you jesus were ye baptized in the name of paul she said that means you're supposed to be baptized in the name of the one that was crucified for you she got up from the altar right then and went and got dressed and was baptized in jesus name that very night the announcer over radio station wkxv and um of course i came on every day in fact at one time i was uh i was broadcasting three times a day i think something like 7 30 in the morning uh noon and then the afternoon late and the one of the announcers that was bringing me on uh he wanted to talk to me he said uh why do you want to rock the boat why don't you you you got all these other preachers stirred up why don't you just go along and i said well there's he said could i come to your church and discuss this with you and i said well sure so he and his wife came to the church uh the one right next door here we i think we had already moved into the uh 5020 and they were in my office and i started discussing this subject with the announcer and when i got done he said do you keep watering your baptistry i said yes we do he said could we get baptized right now i said you sure can and they got up and i baptized both of them that day he started coming to church and he was from the church that really believed in the the roman road and he wanted to teach on a tuesday night or something and he wanted to teach the roman road i said sure yeah you could teach so uh we were meeting in the cafeteria at that time for for that particular special occasion and he started teaching the roman road and as he taught the roman road when he got to he said wait a minute he said the roman roads got a dead incident i don't know what else to tell them uh believe me i said then i took over and taught what the roman wrote if you really follow it you're going to get baptized in jesus name and it's still the same today if you want to obey the word of god and if you want to be baptized the scriptural way now remember this uh so many folks will ask the question is it necessary to get baptized in jesus name well i usually answer this with this do you is it necessary to obey a command and the bible in in the 19th chapter of acts uh paul having passed through the upper coast came to ephesus finding certain disciples he said to them have you received the holy ghost since you believed and they said we've not so much as heard whether the holy ghost he said unto them unto what then were you baptized and they said unto john's baptism and he said john verily baptized with the baptism of repentance saying unto the people that you believe on him we should come after him or so in christ jesus and when they heard this they were baptized in the name of the lord jesus and the 10th chapter of acts paul or peter was on the housetop uh praying saw vision god showed him all manner of four-footed beasts and coming down the sheep and told peter to rise killing he said lord nothing come and has ever entered my mouth and the lord said call nothing common that i've cleansed there was men downstair waiting right then cornelius a gentile had sent the angel had appeared to cornelius and told them to the bible said that cornelius a centerium and said to send men to joppa and get one and surname is peter and who shall tell thee words you'll be to be saved and when peter got down there the house was full and and as peter began to speak the holy ghost fell and all that heard the word and uh peter turned around and looked at all the there's six jews he took with him to be proof that he wasn't getting off into something strange because to preach to gentiles was uh unacceptable to jews at that time peter turned to the six witnesses that he brought with him he said can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized which have received the holy ghost as well as we not a word of protest and he commanded them to be baptized within the lord then pray they him to tarry certain days well how much plainer can it be and and the the little book i wrote common questions i oppose all these questions that i'm teaching from tonight the next segment of the book is entitled adorning the doctrine adorning the doctrine titus 2 10 not prolonging that's stealing taking things illegal and unlawfully but showing all good fidelity that they may adorn the doctrine of our savior in all things the power of beautiful lives aids to men and women young women mothers young men slaves were exhorted to be faithful to their natural obligations of their own stations in life the critics of their religion would be silenced slaves of whom there were many in the early church were exhorted to be so obedient diligent and faithful that their lives would adorn their religious profession thus their heathen masters would be constrained to think if that's what christian religion does for slaves there must be something to it while we love and preach the apostolic doctrine with great enthusiasm godly living must accompany such preaching it has been said that our lives speak so loudly our words cannot be heard just as a person adorns a nice suit of clothing with a proper tie shirt shoes so must a christian adorn their doctrine with a sweet gentle and pleasant attitude it seems that somewhere they're closed so neatly and carry themselves so gracefully they always look nice and well-dressed that's kind of hard to say in this day and time because even many of our preachers look like they're preaching in their pajamas and uh there and see how they're it's it's well that's maybe we're getting in deep water uh the same is true in our church doctrine if we practice christian grace and poise we shall beautifully adorn our doctrine the bible speaks in the the book of proverbs of of a of a woman that adorned herself as a harlot she adorned now how does a harlot dress there was something to do about the way she dressed it was a seductive dress yeah i i'm i have a bible lesson i'm going to be teaching when i get finished with this series and and i'm going to follow not a multitude to do evil and there's a the the way we dress says a whole lot about what we are and and she she was adorned as a harlot heard this one preacher was preaching the dress codes and and um a man said did you did you call my daughter or a harlot he said no i didn't i said she dressed like a harlot well uh we i think uh i the bible speaks of modest apparel the bible is still correct when it talks about modest apparel and we need not only to preach the truth but i think we need to adorn ourselves in a manner that it adds to our uh respect for our religion and our faith i've told you this before but pastor mark mccool told me dad quit quit saying i told you just go ahead and say it and then i always give you something else to repeat but sister mccool and i were coming from down in north carolina years ago i'd been preaching an event down and there and there were two desperados on the loose that they'd kill one or two on the way at rest stops and they were they were trying to catch them and they were last seen down in that part of the country and there was an all points bulleted out for him and as we were headed back home from down in in north carolina my my light came on that my alternator had quit working well i immediately stopped and checked and the the fan belt had come off of the pulley and i was laying down under that car with a screwdriver trying to pry that fan belt back on and there was a car past us went to the next exit and turned around and came back and circled again and then circled again and by that time sister mccool was getting quite nervous because she noticed it was the same car and finally that car pulled up not right beside but stayed stayed distance and a lady rolled down her window is a lady driving it and she sister mccool had her window down because of course her recognition wasn't working then either and she said ma'am are you pentecost sister mccoon said yes i am pentecost and she fell out of that car and my wife fell out of that car and they embraced one another like two apostolic ladies would and she said i passed bio and i saw because i was under the car working on the car and she didn't see me but she saw sister cool and she said honey i i saw your long hair and i knew that you had to be pentecost and sister bakut said yes i am and she said what church do you go to she said i go to brother johnny godard's church in durham north carolina sister mccool said honey johnny goldare came to the lord in brother mccool's revival and ma in portageville missouri many many years ago and needless to say they had quite a quite a reunion but now i said that to say this there was there is something about the way we look and the way we dress and the way we behave and this segment is adorning the doctrine you've heard me tell again and again the preacher sought acceptable words i've heard preachers that preach the truth and and and they really they really nail it when it comes to the truth but they preach it in such a ugly manner it's hardly you're hardly able to receive it and what a shame it is if we don't live a life that adorns this apostolic message whatever you do if you call yourself apostolic behave yourself act like a christian at all times and a restaurant you may not get the best service but it's not the time to to act naughty uh pastor mark mccool said uh if he gets good service he gives a tip if he don't get good service he gives an offering so i've seen people uh one one preacher i was with one time out of the ju at a conference and uh for some we got he was parking his car in a high-rise uh uh parking lot and he went to get his car and somehow they didn't get it there as fast as they should and and he he was very rude to the young man very rude and uh and then when he got through showing uh the ugly code he had home and we drove off and we got about a block away he said where's my camera he's i left my camera back there at that parking uh garage and you talk about somebody eating humble pie when we got back that fella that he was rude to had saved his camera and it was waiting for him and he gave him the camera and and i i i can't stress this too strongly tonight that um not especially because it's right it's right to do right it's always right to do right but remember this folks are not going to open their minds and heart to your religion if you act in an ill attitude and so that i i can't stress enough this uh heading right here adorning about the doctrine um if i thought i've thought so much about when the apostle paul was uh called before the the high priest and uh the apostle paul uh when he was standing there the the high priest commanded one of his servants to smite him on the mouth and he smote him on the mouth and paul said you why did sepulcher god will smite you and then one of the servants standing by said revile us thou the man of god the high priest and immediately immediately paul apologized he said i wish not that that he was the high priest and then he even quoted scripture where you're not supposed to show disrespect to the man of god but i thought of that so much because if you read in the old testament the high priest was elaborately dressed uh that you recognize who he was immediately but things had changed so much that somehow paul did not recognize him as the high priest and i thought of that how many times are we recognizable in our attitude the way we dress the way we talk the jokes we tell the things we laugh about um sister mccool and i were eating downtown years ago at one of the right on the uh the the the old square there i forget what they used to call it but anyway i sat down beside a preacher friend of mine and the lady that was waiting on us she said sir are you a minister i said as a matter of fact i am my pastor such as such church she said i thought you were i just thought you now i'm not trying to paint myself as a picture of a little goodie two-shoes but um she said i thought you were and the uh brother sitting beside me he's a pastor well he said i i i'm a minister too she said well i didn't know that he said well now have i done anything to make you think i wasn't a preacher or she said no you haven't done anything to make me think that you was not a pastor and my little point with that is um i i have to explain more around town why i'm wearing a suit of clothes well that that that's the way i dress that's that's and i usually tell them these my workloads and and and please don't misunderstand what i am trying to say i don't expect you folks to wear a tuxedo suit and a tie all the time but i don't i don't that would wouldn't even be normal but what i am saying is i could dress in a tuxedo or whatever but i could have an attitude that folks would sure not think that i was a man of god so right now what i'm trying to get across in this lesson tonight is adorn the doctrine dress up the doctor that don't mean that you got to work tire and a scoot you don't have i'm not that that's beside the point that would be that would be a false doctrine to teach that you should do that as a matter of fact today we're living in another uh a most casual day and i'll i'll point out something to prove what i'm talking about if you look back many many many years ago at nayland stadium the football uh games men wore ties and hats you look at well they looked like they was going to church but some that's the way but now things have changed they're they're they're much more casual so i'm i'm trying my best to uh to to uh to uh i guess make you understand that i'm not being radical about the way you dress and i'm saying this just as a person adorns a nice suit of clothing with a proper tie shirt shoes so must a christian adorn his doctrine with a sweet gentle and pleasant attitude we need to be on our guard 24 hours a day that we live a life not only can we prove our doctrine by scripture but god do help now i i don't i don't know about you i'm not perfect by long shot and i have found myself apologizing because i'm human and i may speak uh harsh i've had to apologize to teachers in our school one day i walked by and one of the one of the teachers was the class was a little bit disorderly and i was younger and dumber and i stepped in and i called that class to order and and [Music] right now this is not the way we behave in the class and and blah blah blah blah blah and i walked off and i walked back by and the teacher was crying i'm telling you i i i couldn't have felt worse if i'd have stole a horse i i felt i felt so bad i walked right back into that class and i apologize to her and i apologize to that class because i could have talked to her privately at a at a time that it was embarrassing to her what i did and i i wasn't adorning the doctrine very good i was uh and i i remember well i'm not going to tell you about that um i remember this derek was born sister daniel was teaching the whole time and we we provided a nursery for derek alone i mean just and i was so numb skull that uh i didn't want anybody else going out and that was the ruling and one day i i think i even tried to stop sister daniel going there and she she let me know that i was out of a place and i was very much so and it's amazing as as age slips up on you you learn an awful lot don't close your eyes and and your ears and there's a lot of things i needed to do to adorn the doctrine would you stand your feet with us thank you for being here tonight don't forget next wednesday night we'll have some tidbits from back in time i find it so interesting some of these things that we are that we are studying and uh you'll remember some of them and some of you were not here at that time father we thank you tonight for your goodness and mercy we thank you for this crowd tonight for this group of people that love this to study the word of god who are indeed adorning the doctrine by the way they live and the way they behave and i pray god that you will bless the word of god let it sink deep into our hearts and may we grow in the love of god dismiss us from this place and not from your presence bless pastor anthony in the camp meeting he's preaching down in mississippi give them many souls for their labor in jesus name we pray amen shake hands and be friendly you're dismissed in jesus name whatever your protocol is bump knuckles shake hands or whatever you do what you feel like and and god will bless you
