But the reason why we have taken so much time with this particular chapter is because we have the subject of Melchizedek to deal with, which is it engenders a lot of questions. And so I thought we'd take a little bit more time and then study it in its native context here, Genesis 14, but then also look at it how Melchizedek plays a role in Psalm 110. And then today we'll be looking especially at how the author of Hebrews brings up the character Melchizedek in his argument on the New Covenant. Okay, so in Genesis 14, I just want to, I just want to read verses 13 through, or 17 through 20 rather, the part of the chapter that pertains to Melchizedek. After his return, that is Abraham's return from the defeat of Kedor Leomar, and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shabe, that is the Kings Valley and Melchizedek. King of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed him and said, Blessed be Abram by God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth, and blessed be God Most High, who's delivered your enemies into your hands. Okay, all right, so that's the original context as we've gone through this chapter a couple of times. I'm just quickly trying to be more quick about summarizing it each time, but there's been a contest between the kings of the east and the kings of the west, and the kings of the west were defeated by the kings of the east, but the kings of the east made a mistake. They went one step too far in their conquest of the west, that is they took a relative close relative of Abram, a growing power in the western region, and they took him hostage hoping to gain more money, ransom from a rich man, but Abram wasn't the kind of guy to pay ransom, so he went after him with 318 men and took Lot, defeated the kings of the east, and then took Lot back home, and everything that had been taken from the kings of the west, it seems that Abram recaptured and then brought it back and gave it back to the kings of the west, and then a king who wasn't involved in any of the warfare, it seems, came from ancient, ancient Jerusalem, King Melchizedek, who's a Canaanite king, he's not Jewish, he's not Hebrew, he's not in the lineage of Abraham at all, of course, he's not related to Abram, he's a king of the Canaanites, and he's a king in Salem, Jerusalem, he comes and blesses Abram, giving him bread and wine to eat and drink, he and his men, and then Abram pays him a tenth of all of his possessions, all right, so highly significant character here who just appears on the scene one day, and then disappears, we don't know who he's connected to, we don't know what role he played in the politics of the area, he seems to have played no role in the war, and yet here Abram is giving him a tenth of every, here's the most important human being as far as the promises of God go in the salvation of man, here's the most important man, Abram, paying ties to somebody, and it's this king in Jerusalem, all right, so that story, it opens and closes, and the author of Genesis never comes back to it again, it's not, in fact, referred to again for another thousand years, it just disappears into the mists of memory, maybe passed down orally from generation to generation, and then King David, a thousand years later, who has his capital city in the city of Hebron, decides he wants to move it to Jerusalem, which is a Canaanite stronghold, it's one of the last remaining Canaanite cities, all right, so 450 or so years before, maybe 500 years before, Moses had brought the children of Israel out of Egypt, and then Joshua brought them into the Promised Land, and they went by through the Promised Land, Canaan systematically from what became Dan to Bershiba, that is from the far north to the far south, conquered all of these cities, overthrowing all of the Canaanites, all of the Canaanite kingdoms, one by one, but there were a couple of strongholds left, and the one stronghold, the greatest stronghold that was left in the land of Canaan, was the city of the Jebusites, that's Jerusalem, they had a great impregnable fortress called Zion, and David was somehow able to conquer this city finally, and he wanted to move his capital city from Hebron to Jerusalem, and I suspect, I can't say this for sure, but I suspect that the reason why he wanted to move it from Hebron to Jerusalem was because of the Melchizedek story, here was a king who was also a priest in Jerusalem, and Abraham paid tithes to him, he was king of this capital city, and not only did Abraham pay tithes to him, but Melchizedek placed a blessing upon Abraham there, okay, so Abraham remember was supposed to be a blessing unto the nations, and here's this here's this priest coming out in blessing Abraham, all right, so in the mind of David, this is taking Jerusalem, and ruling from Jerusalem is essentially bringing to fruition the promises made through Melchizedek upon Abraham, so this is a way of clinching it, a way of fulfilling that promise and prophecy, stepping into the blessing, given to my great great ancestor, and by faith I'm going to conquer this last stronghold of the Canaanites, and rule from here, from Mount Zion, and so he does, and he looks back upon that conquering, or he looks back upon that ancient prophecy, that ancient account of Abraham and Melchizedek, and he composes Psalm 110, and I just want us to go through Psalm 110 together before we turn to Hebrews, okay, the Lord says to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet, the Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion saying, this is the I am speaking, he says to the Lord, okay I'll get to that in just a moment, rule in the midst of your enemies, and then he says, this is commentary, your troops will be willing on your day of battle, arrayed in holy splendor, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning's womb, the Lord has sworn, will not change his mind, you're a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek, the Lord is at your right hand, he will crush kings on the day of his wrath, he will judge the nations, that's important, he will judge the nations, okay, so whoever this, whoever this Lord is, he's going to, he's not, he's going to rule the nations, remember Abraham was, was, was given the promise by God that he's going to be a blessing to the nations, so it seems that this New Testament writers especially picked up on this looking back upon the Old Testament that the story of Melchizedek and Abraham was somehow bound up in someone who would rule from Jerusalem but not only Jerusalem and not only Israel but the nations, okay, so there's cosmic view here in, in, in this story, okay, all right, let's just go through this verse by verse, the Lord said to my Lord, let's put it up there on the screen if you would, could you do that, Alex Psalm 110 verse one, maybe if you have your print bibles or your e-bibles with you, you, you might be able to look at it there too until we get it up here on the screen, the Lord says to my Lord, the first, this is a little bit, it's a little bit confusing, so pay attention to the way, to the font, the Lord is capitals, L-O-R-N-D, and then says to my Lord, and that's lowercase, L-O-R-D, okay, so this would read in, in the, there we go, perfect, oh, let's go for the King James, let's see what the King James does for us there, because I think they, the King James text, there we go, okay, it retains that, that convention of capitalizing the holy name, okay, so the first Lord is capitals, L-O-R-N-D, and that signifies Yahweh, this is the maker of heaven and earth, this is the covenant God, the, the, the, the God who called Israel, the God who is the God of, the God of Israel, he's Yahweh, I am that I am, so sometimes I'm just going to shorten it to I am, the I am said unto my Lord, in Hebrew the word, the words my Lord is one word, Aldo-ni, or Aldo-ni, means my Lord, Aldo-ni, so the I am said unto Aldo-ni, so it looks really similar in English, Lord, Lord, but in Hebrew it doesn't look anything alike, it's the original Hebrew, way back, it would be out my, the I am said to Aldo-ni, okay, sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool, okay, so who's the first Lord, I've already explained that's Yahweh speaking, that's the covenant God, but who's this second, who's this Aldo-ni, my Lord, who could that be, so it's a psalm of David, David is, David is speaking as the psalmist, the Lord said to my Lord, that is the psalmist Lord, okay, who could that be, he's not referring to himself, okay, and speculation is, well he's speaking to his future descendant, his son, Solomon perhaps, I'm going to, I'm going to win all of these battles and I'm going to leave you with the pieces to make this victory complete, you're going to build the temple, you're going to take Israel to heights it's never been before, so maybe David is speaking to Solomon who's going to be the greater king than David himself, so he's referring to his son as my Lord, but that's never been, that's never, there's no precedent for that anywhere in scripture, there's no precedent for that in any ancient literature of a king speaking to his son as my Lord, the son is not king of the current king, he becomes king when he dies, that's a job you have until you die, okay, all right, but you could say okay well maybe there's no precedent for it, but maybe that's still what it means here, hold on though, if this is a prophecy of Solomon, look what the prophecy is, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet, the Lord's going to extend your mighty scepter from Zion, rule in the midst of your enemies, your troops will be willing at the day of your battle, a raid in holy splendor, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning's womb, the Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, you're a priest forever after the order of milk, because wait a minute, Solomon was never allowed to be priest, okay, second of all, the Lord is at your right hand, he will crush kings on the day of his wrath, he will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth, guess what, Solomon never extended his rule through warfare, ever, he never, he never conquered all of the nations around him, he never judged the nations, he did have some admiring people from royalty from different nations come and view his kingdom with splendor, but he never judged the nations, so not only is there no precedent for a ruling king to call his son my Lord, but there's also in the text itself features of this prophecy that can't be applied to Solomon, or to any of Solomon's descendants, they all went downhill really from there, they had a couple of highlights in there, there was Jehoshaphat who was a pretty good king, there was Josiah who was a pretty good king, couple of decent kings in there, but for the most part it was just a miserable succession of kings that ended one day in king by the name of Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel is the very last king of the Jewish people from the line of David, his name Zerubbabel literally means born in Babel, born in Babylon, born in confusion, all right, and he never ruled in Jerusalem, he was a failure as a leader, and so the line came to an end, so it's not possible that David's referring to himself as his own Lord, he's not referring to his son as his Lord, he's not referring to any of his royal line as his Lord, none of this can be applied to anyone like that, and then there's the kicker I've already alluded to it, you're a priest forever, Solomon he ruled 40 years and he died, that was one of the longest reigns of the Judahite kings, a priest forever, we have now entered when we hear you're a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, you have now entered into the realm of someone who's not merely mortal anymore, aren't you, you're a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, okay, so what I'm at pains to try to say here is this opening phrase, the Lord said to my Lord has caused a lot of speculation over time, what does this mean, who can it apply to, and again if you're to speak today to an Orthodox Jewish man, maybe a rabbi, he's probably going to say something like this was meant to be a blessing spoken over David's son Solomon, but again none of it applies to a Solomon, we're talking about a very cosmic immortal figure that's being referred to here, who could that possibly refer to, and let me ask you a question, who fits the criteria, these criteria, who fits this, try to think of any Jewish king that this applies to, or any other king of any nation, he's Jewish, he's of the line of David, he rules the nations, he's a priest, and he's immortal, those five criteria, who, thousand years later, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins, he's Jewish, he's of the line of David, he was called Son of David in his lifetime, the third criteria was rules the nations everywhere across the globe, okay, this world may not be 100% Christian, but there are Christians, there's a Christian witness in every nation, there's never been, there's never been a figure in history like Jesus, and I don't even mean that on a spiritual level, I'm just speaking purely historical, on a purely historical basis, there's no one that could ever, ever parallel what Jesus is to the nations, he has actually brought to pass all of these prophecies that couldn't seem to be applied to any human being, you're gonna rule the nations, well, here he is, he's worshipped in Iran, he's worshipped in China, he's worshipped in the prison system of North Korea, he's worshipped in Algeria, he's worshipped in the desert, he's worshipped on the sea, he's worshipped on islands in all the continents, every sea, somebody, somebody is calling out upon the name of Jesus, there's never been anything, there's never been a figure like this in history, the Lord said to my Lord, okay, so the second curiosity of this is, why is the I am speaking to somebody, speaking to somebody who is David's Lord, okay, all right, and later, ancient Israelites came in time to believe that this was a messianic prophecy that David, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, was speaking of a future messiah who was going to be a king and a priest and he was gonna deliver his people from his oppressors and he was gonna rule from Jerusalem, he's a messianic figure come from heaven, okay, so David is writing above his own knowledge at this point in time, I can't even imagine what it would be like for David to have penned these words, what did I just write, the I am said unto my Lord, sit at my right hand, see David is David, David's going to rule or David is ruling from Jerusalem and he's a powerful king and the Lord is with him and he's on Mount Zion, but even he understood that these prophecies, these words are these descriptions of rule, they don't describe my reign, I have enemies on every side, my kingdom is shrinking, my descendants, he had to have one of his own sons killed, Absalom, he has another son named Amnon that ends up getting killed, he has another son out of Niger who wrongly tried to take the kingship away from Solomon and he ends up getting killed and then there's Solomon and he dies a backslider, all right, this is not the description of a successful dynasty, so David is writing above his own knowledge, he's certainly not speaking of anything within his own realm of experience, he's speaking, being moved upon by the Holy Ghost to speak of something that's far beyond the imagination at this point in time, okay, so that's where that kind of sits, the ancient Israelites in time came to see that none of David's immediate descendants could fit this description, so they began to look for a messiah who would come from heaven and would rule the nations from Jerusalem, okay, so this subject came up quite a bit in the years leading up to the birth of Jesus, I mentioned a group a couple weeks ago called the Qumran community out in the Dead Sea, about 200 years before Jesus they wrote some they wrote some manuscripts and they also copied out a lot of the Hebrew Bible, they copied it and put the copies of scripture in clay jars and stored them up in caves and they also again they wrote some of their own material and one of the pieces that they wrote was called, it's today it's called 11 Q Melchizedek means it was found in the 11th Cave of Qumran and it's called it's on the subject of Melchizedek and two weeks ago I read to you that Melchizedek Dead Sea Scroll, okay, and if you recall in that Dead Sea Scroll the author or the writer here in the Qumran or Dead Sea community refers to Melchizedek as Michael the Archangel come from heaven and he fights on behalf of God's people against Satan and he says that he's going to come in the year of God's Jubilee, I don't know if you remember that when I read that he is going to come in the year of God's Jubilee do you remember what a Jubilee is according to the Old Testament Jubilee is the 50th year and all the captives all the people in prison all the people under debt under crushing debt they're they're set free and on the Jubilee also if you have borrowed or taken land from somebody it goes back to its original owner the one who possessed it was given it through Joshua and Caleb when they first came into the Promised Land okay so the Jubilee year is a reset it's when everyone is free everything every everyone is set free there are no more slaves there's there's no more debt okay and so the word Jubilee came to be equated with the the time of the Messiah when the Messiah is going to come okay now look at this is why I needed my print Bible with me but I don't have it look at Isaiah chapter 61 Isaiah 61 let's pull that one up there this is so exciting to me right here I love I love reading this the spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord have anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to them that are bound next verse to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and this day of vengeance and our God to comfort all that mourn okay try to burn that into your mind right there just visualize that text right there as you see it to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord which is another way of saying to proclaim the Jubilee all the captives are free all the brokenhearted are healed everyone everything's reset it's the day of the Lord everyone's free now okay so Melchizedek ends up being associated with the Messiah and Michael the archangel who comes from heaven and the proclamation of a year of Jubilee okay but look at that last part and the day of vengeance I have come to proclaim the day of vengeance of our God now go to Luke chapter 4 and verse 16 Jesus goes home to his hometown Nazareth he goes into the synagogue and the rabbis hear that they're the local boy has returned with a little bit of a reputation good a big reputation he was just a carpenter when we last saw him he was a carpenter's boy but he went out he went down he went he went south towards Jerusalem and it seems that he got baptized by John the Baptist and then John the Baptist is saying high and mighty things with him and sending some of his disciples to be this carpenter's disciple and then he went out into the wilderness and he he fasted like Moses for 40 days he was tempted out of the devil and he resisted the devil and then angels delivered him and and he's actually he's he's been preaching and proclaiming and he's been preaching these sermons like Sermon on the mountain and now he's come back home he's he's here in our hometown so what does the local rabbi do well we need a guest preacher here today our our boys come home Mary you all know Miriam and you know all know Joseph and here's their boy and uh you all knew him growing up and great things have been happening around him he has testimony after testimony after testimony and he has this these disciples with him we're going to have him say a word or two so the the the tradition is is is you you hand you hand the the the the the speaker the scroll and he's going to read from the liturgy which is texts that are supposed to be read on certain days of the year okay and the day's reading is from Isaiah 61 which we just read a minute ago open that up and we're going to read that that's going to be your text and here's the tradition when you're reading the reading the word of God you stand up to read the word of God because that's what Ezra taught everyone to do Ezra and Nehemiah stand up while we read the word of God and then when it's time for you to interpret the word of God and expound upon the word of God and apply the word of God through preaching through teaching you sit down because then you're you're ruling you're an authority the person who sits down in the room is the person in charge so an ancient church one of my favorite uh ancient preachers is uh St. Augustine and he would preach long sermon sometimes an hour and a half two and a half hours long and there were no chairs in the church except for one the one he was sitting on and he would preach while you're sitting down and everyone else stood that's that's that's really so we've done it the opposite some for some reason here but i've gone to his very church in Algeria that Basilica is still there today in hippie or regia regius hippo and and still to this day you don't have chairs in there it's a it's a mosque now unfortunately no chairs but you can see where Augustine sat and that's that's the way it was in the ancient world because the person sitting down in the room is the one in charge okay he's ruling like a king okay so with that in mind listen to this Jesus comes home to Nazareth and watch what happens he went to Nazareth verse 16 where he had been brought up and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue as was his custom and he stood up to read of course he stood up to read and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him and unrolling it he found the place where it was written the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of the sight to the blind what's he talking about jubilee i've come to declare the year of you know he's just reading the prophet so everyone who's listening to him isn't hearing this as a first person speech the spirit of the Lord is upon me they're hearing they're hearing ancient Isaiah saying this you understand okay all right he's sent me to give recovery of sight for the blind to set the oppressor free or the oppressed free to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor that's the jubilee whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa what what what go to the next go to the next verse there alex he closed the book what are you doing what are you doing go back to isaas 61 verse 2 man putting a lot of pressure on alex back there we need to have parallel sorry okay look look to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord that's where Jesus stopped he closed the book what's the rest of the verse and the day of vengeance of our god he didn't read that part he closed the scroll all right let me tell you something about nazareth ancient nazareth it's the stronghold of the people in the north who resent the corruption and backsliddenness of the scribes the Pharisees and the priests in Jerusalem these are the ultra conservatives the ultra cons of israel they live in nazareth it's a backwards it's redneck it's considered to be regressive because all they want to do is go back to the way it used to be they hate Rome they hate Jerusalem or at least all the people who are ruining it they want to they want they want to make israel great again so to speak all right but they're they're they're they're almost militant though they're militant they want they want it to be they want to go back to the glory days and this is their favorite text apparently all right it's almost their their pledge of allegiance and national anthem this is their favorite text open up the scroll isaah chapter 61 there's going to be all this freedom for all the people who have been enslaved and then there's going to be vengeance god is not only going to set everyone free but he's going to give all of the people who did everything wrong their comeuppance and israel gets to watch and this is where jesus was raised his mother is named Miriam that's very moses like right the children of israel moses his sister's Miriam she watched dober moses made sure he made it all the way to the palace she's his power she create she she wrote one of the first songs of ancient israel she is known for singing with the timbrel and the dance all right jesus's siblings he has several siblings we don't know the names of his sisters but we know the names of his brothers listen to them one of them is named joseph there's a patriarch name like his father his earthly father we have another one named jacob or james that's another patriarch name okay so we're all going back she named mary seems to name all of her children after the ancient patriarchs or the ancients okay and then there's a there i said joseph i said jacob there's a simon okay or simian there's a tribe of simian okay and i'm leaving juda out juda is one of the patriarchs and one of the the head of the great greatest tribe of israel okay so mary has named all of her four of her son's names after the very first israelites okay there's only one that breaks that pattern his name is joshua okay but she didn't get to choose that name did she that was the uh the the angel gabriel who told her to name jesus that okay but four of her sons are named after the way back the traditional names and they grow up in nazareth he's a carpenter he's a blue collar worker like most of the people of nazareth and they're hard liners and hardcore people okay and look what happens they have this again national anthem their favorite part is the year of jubilee followed by and the day of our lord's vengeance and you can just imagine the frar this is feel so patriotic when i hear that right there and and jesus gets to the favorite part he closes the scroll and doesn't read it what what do you what are you doing and keep reading it's like it's like it's like getting to you know if you went to united penny coastal church of general conference and somebody got up and said then peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you and then the mic broke out right there what did we leave out in the name of jesus christ or we were at the super bowl and went he used to the singing or the land of the and she stopped right there with free put the microphone down and went and sat down we missed the home of the brave and then the the b2 bombers going over in the fireworks and everything jesus did this he said he said to proclaim the year of jubilee and then when we got to the crescendo he refused it and rolls closed the scroll and sat down all right sometimes you can get people's attention with the things you say but sometimes you can get their attention with what you don't say and this is what happened here look what it says let's go back there we go he rolled up the scroll gave it back to the attendant sat down now he's the only one seated in the synagogue now everyone else is standing so you know what everyone's thinking he's going to teach on it with authority he's he is claiming authority to teach authoritatively on this text and look look what it says says oh before that go back to the previous look at this i love the visuals right here and the eyes of all of them that were in the synagogue were fast on him now i'll go to the next verse and he began to say unto them and here's his entire sermon this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears you're dismissed okay now when he sits down after having left out the best part and everyone's wondering why surely when he sits down he's going to explain why he left out that best part but does he do that no because his mission wasn't at this point in time vengeance god so love the world he gave his only begotten son and jesus would say in john's gospel i'm not come to condemn the world okay so look what he's just done when he says this day is the scripture fulfilled in your ears what he's suggesting is you were re we were reading this text the spirit of the lord is upon me as something that ancient isaia was saying but i'm telling you i'm saying it it's about me i'm the first person here the spirit of the lord is upon me i have come to set the captives free to give sight to the blind to heal and bind the broken hearted and i have come to proclaim the jupy now i'm way outside the scope of the melchizedek discussion i didn't expect this to have so many tentacles in everything it just kind of goes through every book of the bible and i'm i'm afraid i'm never going to get out of genesis 14 here but but allow me allow me to allow me to finish right here and we're hardly going to get to hebrus okay look what happens next oh oh oh alex i'm sorry here's another curveball go back to isaas 61 again okay go to the next verse and let's read a few more verses further there we go to a point this is ancient isaia speaking to a point unto them that mourned in zion to give unto them beauty for ashes oil of joy for mourning the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness they might be called trees of righteousness the planting of the lord that he might be glorified next verse they shall build the old ways they shall raise up the former desolations they shall repair the waste cities the desolation of many generations keep going strangers shall stand and feed your flocks the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vine dressers oh that that's so obscure right there in the king james i can hardly hardly convey to you with those words right there the offense strangers that is foreigners shall stand and feed your flocks and the sons of the foreigner shall be your plowmen in other words in other words this prophecy of isaia is saying and it's this the stranger and the foreigner here the alien is referring to the gentiles so ancient israel is hearing isaia proclaim that in the year of the jubilee the lord's going to pour out his vengeance he's going to comfort israel and pour wrath upon the gentiles and make them slaves of the israelites okay so the gentiles are going to get the short end of the stick now or they're going to get their comeuppance they're going to get the revenge for all the years that the israelites have put up with the oppression so the roles are going to be reversed that's the promise of isaia 61 that's the year of jubilee that the people of nazareth are looking forward to one day we're not going to be serving and sending tribute to rome anymore we're not going to have pilot we're not going to have these roman legions dirtying our sacred land anymore they're going to be our slaves that's the promise of the jubilee and that's the hope they hold on to in this little town of nazareth and jesus gets to their favorite part and closes the book they're like what did you leave that out for and then he says this day all that i just read is being fulfilled in me whoa now they're offended and remember who's the bad guy who gets the who gets of who gets the punished in the end the satisfying punishment it's the gentile in that prophecy watch what happens here go back now to luke proceed with the story all right all spoke you can use any version it doesn't it doesn't matter now i'm not worried about the capital letters and all of that yeah luke four and twenty two now okay all bear wit bear him witness and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth and they said it isn't this joseph's son some of the some of the older ladies were probably sitting there thinking my he sure has grown up a lot sure has come a long way i remember changing his diaper and now the spirit of the lord is upon him he says that's pretty nice wonder if it's true next verse he said unto them you will surely say unto me this proverb physician heal thyself whatsoever we have heard done in capernaum do also here in thy country we heard you performed all these miracles in capernaum let's see you do it here we've heard all kinds of big things about you but when you start proclaiming prophecies like this to be about you we're gonna need to see it with our own eyes next verse and he said verily i say unto you no prophet is accepted in his own country that's good self-awareness right there you have to know who you're talking to people who watched you grow up we're going to take a whole lot more evidence next verse but i tell you of a truth now i want you to listen to this and find out where the offense is because this is going to lead what they hear next what the audience hears next is going to make them so angry that they're going to take the boy that they helped raise and try to throw him over a cliff listen i tell you of a truth many widows were in israel in the days of elisha or elisha when the heaven was shut up three years and six months when great famine was throughout all the land next verse but unto none of them was elisha sent save unto seraptah a city of Sidon onto a widow or woman that was a widow he's got one more example watch next verse many lepers were in israel in the time of elisha i got Elijah and elisha mixed up there the prophet none of them was cleansed saving Naaman the syrian where's what's the pattern what's he saying right there the Gentiles in ancient israel before isaia before isaia's time there was there were these two prophets and there were all kinds of widows in the land of israel there were all kinds of lepers in the land of israel but those two prophets when they performed miracles of cleansing somebody that was a leper and have taken care of a widow and her son none of the israelites went to the gentiles now you're in deep ultra con territory saying this and you stopped reading the text their favorite part and then you mentioned two biblical examples that you'd rather forget man for whom the bell tolls is that what you said we are all a part of a single continent the death of any man diminishes something of the life in me therefore ask not for whom the bell tolls it tolls for thee i think maybe that means i need to quit but maybe it means listen i would say this wait how did the bells happen is that somebody's phone okay that was impressive so so now now now then look go the next verse alex and all day in the synagogue when they heard these things were filled with wrath next and rose up thrust him out of the city led him unto the brow of the hill where upon their city was built that they might cast him down headlong i've stood in the very place there's a cliff it's still there it's called the bout brow of the precipice it's right there and it's a drop of about 250 feet and you know where it lands you know at the bottom that's the valley of armageddon right there that's that's going up to the horse's bridle blood they were going to throw him into the valley of armageddon point is there was a great deal of anticipation by the time jesus showed up on the scene of what the year of jubilee would entail and the character of melchizedek was all wrapped up in that maybe maybe he was a foreshadowing of someone who is going to come from heaven and deliver us all and bring about a year of jubilee and then also vengeance upon the nations who've enslaved us maybe it's not even a foreshadowing of a messianic figure who's going to come from heaven but maybe it's melchizedek himself who was the messiah the ancient messiah that abraham paid ties to and will come to visit us and then he will lead us lead us to victory over the gentiles so when jesus shows up you start seeing they have this melchizedek figure this melchizedekian expectation of what the messiah is going to be like and so when jesus shows up and starts closing the book on the vengeance part and then proclaiming that gentiles are going to be recipients of the blessing of the jubilee too like no not this guy he needs to die so you can see what what um um the the melchizedek characters he's um an eschatological end times figure and still to this day there's a great deal of speculation as to what he is i'll just tell you right now and i haven't taught it we're gonna have to have part three of melchizedek the next bible study well just just a little glimpse very well might have been an angel very well and i'll there's one verse in in there's one phrase in the book of hebrus that suggests that the author of hebrus believed that he was immortal okay so we'll stop right there why don't we stand and let's pray
