have your Bibles would open with me to the book of Hebrews the book of Hebrews chapter number four the book of Hebrews chapter number four we're going to read it verse number one but I'm going to ask you to please leave your Bible open to Hebrews 4. we're just going to read one passage of scripture Hebrews 4 and 1. then I want to teach a Bible study tonight which I believe is going to bless and touch our hearts Hebrews 4 and 1. says let us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest any of you should sing to come short of it he talks about rest rest would you say that word with me tonight rest rest as a matter of fact that's going to be my entire title tonight I'm just going to minister on this one word rest rest precious God tonight as I asked you earlier today and I ask you in the pre-service prayer God would you anoint my heart my lips my mind God help me to be able to prepare a table to feed your people tonight Lord in a few moments when we leave here God may we leave here with a word put down inside of our hearts and that word is rest I ask you tonight Lord to move upon all of our hearts Lord may we have a mind to receive your word in Jesus name we pray amen and amen you may be seated tonight rest rest let me give you a little history on the book of Hebrews the book of Hebrews is a book that chapter after chapter tells us about the all-sufficiency the all-sufficiency that is in Jesus Christ as a matter of fact the book of Hebrews is interesting because we are similar we are similar to the people in the book of Hebrews and I'm going to show you how that we today are similar first and foremost the people the church that's being addressed in the book of Hebrews were former worshipers of the Old Testament Covenant they were very devout they were to the letter they obeyed the Old Testament Covenant but somewhere this New Testament Plan of Salvation came and this group of people that are being addressed in the book of Hebrews obeys The Plan of Salvation brother Capps they are believers in Jesus Christ they believe in his death burial and his resurrection they believe in Repentance from sin water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of those sins and the infilling of the Holy Ghost evident by speaking with other tongues they believe they believe in this as you study the book of Hebrews you find out that the book of Hebrews is being written to second to third generational Apostolic Church it's the second possibly the Third generation of an Apostolic Church you find that this group of people this group of people are beginning to struggle so why we have the book of Hebrews they're beginning to struggle because look at how they don't fit in anymore the main religion the Mane if I could use the word denomination the main religious system they came out of they're no longer a part of Judaism they're no longer apart of what is very popular and is the majority in Israel the worshiping of Moses Covenant they're not a part of that so they've got pressure they've got pressure from the dominant religious system of that day because they don't fit in they don't fit in but not only are they getting pressure from Jerusalem but they're also getting pressure from Rome they don't fit in with the Roman government they're beginning squeezed in between we don't fit in and maybe although we love to talk of swelling numbers of the apostolic church at that time there's no doubt that they were in consideration to Judaism the Old Testament Covenant worshipers they were a minority and so they find themselves a small group of people by number squeezed in between we don't fit in the modern day religious culture and we sure don't fit in with Rome we're being squeezed in between it was there that some of these that are addressed in Hebrews were Beginning to Look Back at the Old Testament they were beginning not necessarily not necessarily to deny the born-again experience not necessarily to deny that Jesus Christ died rose again and ascended into heaven they were not going to deny that fact they were just going to go back and add the Old Testament Covenant and go back under the Old Testament Covenant it's because of this that God inspired the writer and the entire book of Hebrews is preaching is preaching the all-sufficiency of Jesus Christ as a matter of fact if you run a reference on the word better you will find the word better appears in chapter after chapter after chapter in the book of Hebrews there's the writer of Hebrews the writer of Hebrews is it is telling us is telling us this Christ is greater than the Angels he's greater than the angels because none of the Angels were given the name that Jesus Christ was given he's greater than the Angels another place the book of Hebrews says he's better than Moses he's better than Moses Moses brought God's people out of Egyptian bondage but Jesus Christ brought people out of sin so that the word better better better than Angels better than Moses better than the Old Testament priesthood better than all of the levitical priesthood better than all of the high priests that that occupied during the Old Testament time better better and so now the writer of Hebrews brings us in chapter 4 and verse 1 he is just addressed in chapter 3. how that the children of Israel could not go into their promised land or their rest because of one word unbelief unbelief unbelief kept the children of Israel from going in to their Promised Land of which God refers to it as their rest he comes to chapter four and in verse 1 he says let us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest any of you seem to come short of it now he says I want you to be fearful in an examining way I want you to understand God has left you a promise and This Promise has to do with rest it has to do with rest he left you a promise and this promise involves rest for our soul and rest for our spirit he said I he said he said don't rush through this he said don't just rush through this Hebrews don't just rush into this because there is arrest there's a promise that God has given you there's a promise that God has given you and I don't want you to go through the motions of rituals and I I don't want you to go through this belief in the the burial in the death the the death the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ I don't want you to go through these things and not have the promise of rest the promise of rest he basically tells them that the only way you can receive the promise of rest is to receive the promise by faith you've got to receive it by faith the promise must be received by faith it's not enough for God to make you a promise you have to receive that Promise by faith you have to believe in the promises of God not the Old Testament covenants and the works of man he's saying go ahead and work if you want to but that work will never bring you rest but if you will receive the promise of rest and you will receive it with faith every promise in God's word that we hear preach the adversary our flesh would like to tell us not me I want to ask you why not you why not you if God made a promise if God made a promise and that promise is to most people God has violated and he has become a respecter of persons and can I tell you God has never made one promise that he's been a respecter of persons the promises of God are to all men the promises are available to all men but what keeps you from getting them is a simple thing called unbelief why not you living under the promise of the blessings of God why not you living under the promises of the hand of God and so the writer of Hebrews and I go back to chapter 4 and verse 1. let us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest lest any of you should seem to come short I left you a promise turn with me if you would to Luke chapter 24 and verse number 45. Jesus has died on the cross Rose from the grave and it's about to ascend into heaven and in verse 45 he tells the apostles then opened he their understanding that they might understand the scriptures and said unto them thus it is written and thus it behoove Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name Above All Nations beginning at Jerusalem and ye now Jesus is talking to the disciples and ye are witnesses of these things look at verse 49 closely and behold I send the what I send the what I send the promise of my father upon you but carry ye in the city of Jerusalem until you be endued with power from on high can I tell you tonight if you're not enjoying your walk with God it could very well be that you have forgotten a promise that God has made us and that is Christ in us the hope of glory will you say brother Carpenter I've received the gift of the Holy Ghost well that's wonderful but can I tell you that you must continually be receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost you must continually the Bible says let us walk in the spirit let us live in the spirit we don't need to think of the spirit baptism as a one-time initial experience in our lives church it's got to be an everyday thing that we are leaning upon the promise of the spirit of God I need I need the spirit of God some days later in Acts chapter 1 verse number four Acts chapter 1 verse number 4. and being assembled together with them commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the father which saith he you have heard of me for John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence so right here put two and two together what is the promise of the father it's a baptism of the Holy Ghost the baptism of the Holy Ghost is the promise of the father what was the writer of Hebrews 4 and 1 mentioning when he says watch out be careful don't get in this dry religious uh uh uh Circle and circuit watch out that you don't overlook the promise because the promise is going to bring you rest verse 5. for John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence when they therefore will come together they ask of him saying Lord will thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel he said unto them it is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the father has put in his own power but ye shall receive somebody say it with me you shall receive you shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you and you shall be Witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in Judea and in Samaria unto the uttermost part of the earth he said the promise is here he said the promise is the Holy Ghost well Peter preaches that day the Holy Ghost came in Acts 2 1-4 the Holy Ghost came and in Acts chapter 2 verse number 37 Peter was at the end of his preaching and when he said now when they heard this Acts 2 37 now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the Apostles men and Brethren what shall we do what shall we do we have looked for the Messiah to come we have looked for him to come and now he came and we crucified him what shall we do then Peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost look at verse 39 see if some things don't connect together verse 39 for the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off even as many as the Lord our God shall call can I tell you today I'm not only preaching this tonight for those that have never received the gift of the Holy Ghost but I am primarily ministering to this tonight to a church of a second or third generation that doesn't fit in with the mainstream denominations of the world nor do we fit in with Washington D.C and we're thinking about looking back and picking up some of the denominal things of this world and I've got to sound the alarm I'm not only going to preach the promise of the Holy Ghost to those that have never received it but I want to preach it to this entire church tonight let's not feel let's not Overlook the the the rest that God has given does it get weary sure it gets weary we live in fleshly bodies we are living in uncertain times this world is an obstacle course when you're trying to live for God I'm not trying to be a pity party tonight but if you're trying to live for God this world is an obstacle course if you're trying to live for God you are swimming Upstream you are strength you are swimming against the current you are swimming against the culture that's why Peter said when he come to the end of repent and be baptized and receive the Holy Ghost and then he said and save yourselves from this untoward generation are you weary housewife are you weary dear husband are you weary dear elderly person can I tell you tonight the antidote the answer the medicine for weariness in the apostolic church is the promise of the spirit of the almighty God I just don't receive it one time years ago that I want to receive it over and over and over again can you say Amen Isaiah chapter 28 verse 9. Isaiah prophesied of the Holy Ghost and he said in Isaiah 28 verse number 9 Whom Shall he teach knowledge and Whom Shall he make to understand Doctrine them that are winged from the milk and drawn from the breast for precept must be upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line up online hear a little and they're a little he begins to tell you how you come to the fullness of the truth he begins to tell you if you want to know about the doctrine if you want to understand Doctrine and if you want to know you got to be drawn from the it's like a baby that's nursing a breastfeeding baby that's nursing that baby cannot remain breastfeeding sooner or later that child needs meat that child needs more strong Doctrine given although I thank God for the blood although I thank God for the cross I rejoice in the cross of Jesus Christ I thank God for the cross of Jesus Christ I thank God for the blood of Jesus Christ I thank God for all of these things but can I tell you a year from now you can't just be wrapped up in Blood and the cross because those are Elementary infant things that just are there to get you started thank God for his blood but his blood is going to lead us to his spirit and his spirit is going to lead us to overcoming people talk about the blood a lot in reference to overcoming sin or the forgiveness of sin but we have to understand the blood will forgive us of our sin but the Holy Ghost will give us power to be Overcomers over our sin the Holy Ghost will give us that power he said here a little there a little a little bit here a little bit there some people are here tonight you wasn't born in the Apostolic Church you were born in a church that taught you a little bit of Doctrine a little bit of what was right God saw the sincerity of your heart and so here a little there a little line up online precept upon precept watch how it comes in verse 11. for we're stammering lips and another tongue will he God Speak to this people to whom he God said this is the rest this is the rest wherewith he may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing yet they would not hear I want to make and I don't want to get sidetracked I don't get sidetracked but I do want to address this because there's a popular in in in denominations that teach that what this stammering lips and another tongue was that God was going to use a foreign language that there were going to be syrians and Assyrians that were going to come around Jerusalem and Destroy Jerusalem and they would be speaking a foreign language and and I've heard that so many times oh this Stam ring lips well that doesn't fit in that doesn't fit in for his stammering lips in another tongue will he speak to this people to whom he said this is the rest when could an army come in and tearing my walls down and killing my kids be considered rest well it's not it's not what is here is exactly what he says to whom this is the rest where which you may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing can I ask you tonight just a give me a few amens if this can relate to you there's so much pressure in this world so much pressure there's so much how about the word uncertainty and pressure in this world uncertainty pressure so many Joy depleters Of Our Lives the economy is uncertain raising families can be uncertain at times it's pressure but how can I deal with it I can deal with it by understanding that he made me a promise he made me a promise and you can never buy the rest that God's spirit will give you you'll never be popular enough to get the rest that God's spirit will give you you'll never have enough money to get the rest that God's spirit will give you you'll never be healthy enough to get the rest that God's spirit will give you but if you can believe the word of God tonight the only thing going to keep you out of this rest is the same thing that kept Israel out of the Canaan land the only thing that's going to keep you out of your rest is for you to sit here tonight and not believe that that promise is yours all you got to do is start mixing it with a little bit of faith I'm tired of staying up all night I'm tired of wrestling with this I am flat out tired of not being happy because God gave me a promise that is joy unspeakable and is full of Glory we need the spirit of God so much let's go back to Hebrews tonight Hebrews 4 and 1. oh praise God let us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it For unto us was the Gospel preached as well as unto them but the word preached did not profit them not being mixed with faith in them that heard it you know what there's two groups here tonight I hope to God there's this one group called us them two little boys stood in front of that U.S post office and one little boy looked up and he said U.S postal he said what's that mean Freddie he said you big dummy that means that's Us's post office there all right now I tell you tonight I hope that all I have here is US is tonight because I don't want to have any them's in the house because there's two kinds of people there's an us what makes it us they take the promise and they mix it with the they mix it with faith and they say if God promised us his Spirit then sign me up I want his Spirit tell me what I have to do to get his Spirit tell me what I have to do to keep his Spirit just sign me up I want his Spirit them them set back and say well I know what the Bible says but I know what it says but not me they're they're negative they're absolutely look at everything through the lens yeah but not me no that's where you're going to be of them but I want to know could we just all be Us's tonight if God gave us the promise of his ever abiding Spirit shine me up I'm tired of trying to do life without you Jesus I'm tired of trying to do life without you lord it's not in me to direct my ways I don't have wisdom to direct my ways I need your spirit inside of me verse number three for we which have believed do enter into rest as he said as I sworn as I have sworn in my wrath if they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world for he spake in a certain place on this of this of the seventh day on this wise and God did rest the seventh day from all of his works Genesis 2 and 1's where we find this Genesis 2 and 1 thus the heavens and the Earth were finished that's the heavens and the Earth were finished and all the hosts of them and on the seventh day God ended his work whose work is it whose work is it it's God's word he ended his work which he had made and he rested on the seventh day from all of his work which he had made and God blessed the seventh day and Sanctified it because that in it he had rested from all his work which he which God had made now let's clear the table tonight about this word rest get out of your mind God's got to soar back get out of your mind God is fatigued like we are at the end of a work day get out of your mind that God is physically drained that he needs a good night's rest and get recharged because when we think of rest that's what we think of we rest because we're weary we rest because we need to recharge for tomorrow that's why we rest but God didn't rest because he was tired his rest is a celebration rest he has given to man everything man needs for Body Soul and Spirit there wasn't one thing on this Earth that man that man lacked God gave him everything and so when God gave man everything everything everything that man needed God gave him everything that he needed let me keep hammering that God gave him everything you know maybe if we believe that God is everything that we would never be looking when we find need when we have a need we don't need to look out there he can meet our needs in here he is the all-sufficient god I don't need entertainment to make me happy I don't need some Gizmo or Gadget out there in the world to make me happy everything we need God has so God created man he created the Earth and he looked and he said everything man needs for joy happiness peace everything man needs he has me he has he has his wife they'll re they'll populate the Earth and they have all this everything in God's God rested not only did God rest but God took the seventh day and said the seventh day shall be a day of Celebration the seventh day shall be a day of you celebrating celebrating what I have done but anybody want to help me out tonight what caused God to have to go back to work sin sin because when sin entered Earth through the serpent to Eve and Adam When sin entered the Earth why did God have to go back to work because now man needs something that the Earth doesn't have what a God what a God you know why God didn't just wipe his hands and say good riddance as one verse it tells you why for God so loved oh I love this for God so loved the church the church us the world the deepest stained ugliest sin that could ever be committed God looked down and said the answer is not there there's nothing that they could ever do or be on this Earth to reverse sin and so God began to give prophecies the seed of the woman will bruise the head of the serpent God begin to give prophecies a virgin shall conceive and bear a child and his name Shall be Called Emmanuel well God begin to give prophecies in the Old Testament not a bone of his body would be broken God begin to give prophecy he would be sold for 30 pieces of silver God began to give prophecy they'll bury him in a rich man's tomb God begin to give prophecy on the third day he'll resurrect the king of glory that's who he is God again to give prophecy why did God go back to work because you and I needed the one thing that the Earth can never give us and God said I've got to go back to work I've got back that's why on John chapter 19 and verse 30. John chapter 19 and verse number 30. Jesus Christ God in flesh hangs on a cross crucified and in John 19 verse 30. when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar he said it is finished and he bowed his head and he gave up the ghost do you know what he said there the equivalent of it is finished is the equivalent of the seventh day of rest on the seventh day God looked down and said the Earth's got everything man needs but when sin reared his ugly head God said I got to put my work clothes on I've got to roll myself in flesh and I've got to give myself a sacrifice and shed blood from man and now that I have shed my blood I'm going to tell you now I am your rest it is finished now why is Jesus the great high priest greater than the whole high priest of the Old Testament the Bible does not mention a chair or sitting down in the Old Testament the priest never sat down there was not a chair brother Erickson you know why there was not a chair for the high priest his job was never completed year after year he had to come in once a year the day of atonement he would sprinkle Blood on the mercy seat and the God would push the sins up another year and another high priest would live and die but there's no seat for the high priest because the Old Testament high priest was never finished but when Jesus Christ our high priest came Hebrews chapter 1 and verse 3 says it this way I wish somebody would clap their hands right now in Hebrews chapter 1 verse number 3. who being the who being the brightness of his glory and the express image of his person and upholding All Things by the word of his power when he had by himself purged our sins sat down sat down sit down sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high you want to tell you let me tell you what makes him better than the Old Testament priesthood they never sat down year after year after year one would die they would pick another up but when God became our great high priest and he hung upon the cross he said it is finished and he sat down he said I have given them everything they need can I tell you tonight our rest is in Jesus our hope is in Jesus if you're looking for it anywhere else live of your weary life but not for me Jesus is my rest Jesus Is My Hope Jesus is my anchor come on praise His name tonight praise His name tonight praise His name tonight praise His name praise His name Hebrews chapter 4 and verse 4. for he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise God did rest the seventh day from all his Works in this place again if they shall enter into my rest seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of say the word please because of what's going to keep you from going into your rest what's going to keep you from getting your laughter back what's going to keep you from getting your joy back what's going to keep you from waking up in the morning and say praise God it's Thursday morning I'm ready to do life because I can do it now because I have something in me unbelief unbelief unbelief unbelief was what caused them to get to the border of their Canaan land and say we can't do it unbelief was what caused Adam and Eve to become the parents of the first murdered person and the first murderer unbelief every trouble we have in our lives can be picked back to a thread simply called on unbelief unbelief unbelief there's pressure in this world the book of Acts chapter 4 the lame man was healed by Peter and John a lame man a notable Miracle is done but in Acts chapter 4 verse 21 so when they had further threatened them this is the religious group further threatened them they let them go finding nothing how they might punish them because of the people for all men glorified God for which for that which was done so now brother Erickson they've done a good deed the lame man has been healed but the religious system puts the pressure threats threads threads I can't tell you that I have the answer to keep all threats off of us but I can tell you what the sav is to help the threats from getting into our spirit they left that room of being threatened and in verse 23 and being let go they went to their own company and reported all that the chief priests and Elders had said unto them and when they heard that they lifted up their voice to God with one Accord and they said Lord Thou Art God which hath made Heaven and Earth and sea and all that that in them is who by the mouth of thy servant David has said why did the Heathen rage and the people imagine the vain thing the kings of the earth stood up and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ forever truth against thy holy Child Jesus whom thou Hast anointed both Herod and Pontius Pilate with the Gentiles and the people of Israel were gathered together for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy Council determined before it to be done now you do realize I'm reading you an Apostolic prayer they are in prayer right now why are they in prayer they've been threatened can I tell all of us tonight the best place to take life's threats is to the prayer room not the Facebook not the girls not out chat room not the boys hunting club the best place to take threats is the prayer room this is an Apostolic prayer verse 29 and now Lord behold their threatenings Grant unto thy servants that with all boldness they may speak Thy Word by stretching forth that hand to heal and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy Child Jesus and when they had prayed the place was shaken where they were assembled and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost why stop women no they got it on the damn Pentecost yeah they did but they got it again because it's more than just a one-time you know a one-time trip you've got to get the Holy Ghost every day you've got to realize on your way to work I need the Holy Ghost I need protection I need guidance we're living in a day of Mall shootings school shootings we're crazy people that's all around us and they're going to make their way to Maryville sooner or later that craziness is going to get here but I'm not gonna fear because I'm going to be asking God give me the Holy Ghost God Lord give me the Holy Ghost God give me your spirit and they they were filled with the Holy Ghost and speak the word of God with boldness now for the next few minutes let me take some things and throw it out but let me take some things and put it in because sometimes we have reactions to things that really are detrimental I do not believe that you speak in tongues after your initial infilling to know you've got the Holy Ghost I don't believe that don't believe the Bible teaches that so therefore to teach to you and say well you better speak in tongues tonight you don't know you got the Holy Ghost if you don't if you've not spoken in tongues tonight that's not true I know I got the Holy Ghost because 41 years ago I walked up to an altar and I know that I know that I know that I know I wish somebody say I know I know that I know that I know that I know that I got the baptism of the Holy Ghost I know that I know that I know that I know that I know have I said I know enough that this tongue moved and I didn't know what it was saying I know that I know that I know that I know and then I got the second sign you know what the second sign is you got the holy gifts don't you is the devil tells you didn't get it I know that I know but I'm not going to get up in the morning and be frustrated to speak in tongues so I know I got the Holy Ghost it's not Bible that is simply not Bible but neither is it Bible to say that well once I've spoken in tongues I don't have to do it again you see we're going to have to go from a half to to a get to First Corinthians 14 First Corinthians 14 verse number one through four follow after charity Love and Desire spiritual gifts but rather that you may prophesy he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto God for no man understandeth him how be it in the spirit he speaketh Mysteries but he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification exhortation and comfort he that speaketh in an unknown tongue edify it himself but he that prophesied edify at the church oh just very quickly let me tell you what Paul's trying to correct the Corinthian Church was abusing speaking in tongues it was such a building up and it was such a it was such an edifying of self that when they got up to start the service the man started the service speaking in tongues the song leader got carried away and he began to sing in other tongues the preacher got carried away and he preached his sermon in other tongues and Paul says we got to correct this he said we need prophesying going on in the church because prophesying is edifying the church but he's not saying that speaking in tongues is not important did you follow he that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself I don't know about you can we be honest with each other tonight have you ever felt beat down well that's about five of us how about the other angels are in this place tonight I said have you ever been beat down come on you ever been beaten down you just felt like you had the stuff and it's knocked out of you you ever just felt like that you didn't even have to open the door I could walk under the door when I leave here see our problem is we're trying to get lifted up in other things when the Bible says I'll give you the Holy Ghost and when you speak in that Heavenly language you are edifying yourself when I can go back and have the spirit of repentance God I want to keep sin out of my life repenting wasn't something I did 41 years ago I'm still repenting tonight repenting is not just something you did and it's over God searched my heart oh God know my ways God see if there be any wicked way in me Lord turn me upside down inside out let the words of my mouth and the medications of my heart let it be acceptable and oh
