turn in your bibles with me tonight to the book of proverbs the book of proverbs chapter 24 or excuse me the book of proverbs chapter 23 and verse number four before i get into my bible lesson tonight i want to give us all an opportunity to obey the word the bible says forsaking not the assemblings of yourselves together as the manner of some is now you say well bill carpenter we're obeying that tonight we're obey we're here and i do thank god i do thank god that you're here tonight but here's a second part of that even so much the more as you see the day approaching and what he's saying there is have more church have more church as you see that that that day that day approaching have more church well i'm going to give you an opportunity to have more church you don't have to drive out of town get a hotel room it's not going to cost you four dollars a gallon for fuel you just have to come to church tomorrow night at 7 30 and then friday morning at 10 10 a.m and then again friday night at 7 30 first apostolic of maryville is hosting the tri-state youth convention or the tri-state uh youth retreat is what they is what they call it and uh i wanna listen they have chosen brother cincotta they have chosen one of maryville's favorite the reverend sean garnett is going to be here tomorrow night and friday night why don't you come out and be a part there's no there's no registration there's no fee to get get in the door um just just come and worship come and worship the lord and so much the more as you see the day approaching proverbs oh one more thing i'm glad to welcome my sister-in-law here with us tonight robin it is so good to have you here and uh let me just go ahead and tell you this about robin robin is a faithful member she lives in florida but robin is a faithful member of first apostolic church via the internet and so we just welcome one of our internet members home with us tonight and we're so glad we're so glad to have to have her proverbs are you ready to go proverbs 23 and verse 4 labor not to be rich cease from thine own wisdom wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not for riches certainly make themselves wings they fly away as an eagle toward heaven tonight i'm going to be a good pastor and i'm going to teach you tonight on understanding how money works understanding how money works now don't get all sanctimonious and holy on me tonight all right because money concerns every one of us it does it does money is simply a necessity of life money is a necessity of life but it is a tool money is a tool everybody say a tool say it with me money is a tool money is a tool to accomplish a task of winning a lost world to him father i thank you tonight lord i want to be a good pastor and i want to teach your good word lord jesus tonight let your blessings continue to abide upon this congregation i give you praise tonight give you worship let our hearts be open god let a spirit of submitting to your way your will your word come upon us i'll give you praise and honor in jesus name amen give the lord a hand to praise before you're seated please we often hear people through life say and make statements if i could just get a break man if i could just get a break you ever heard anybody say that man if i could just get a break have you ever heard one say that in reference to finances man if i could just man if i could if i could just if i could just get a break i could just get a break well i am here tonight and probably the only regret i've got about this bible lesson probably the only regret i've got uh there's probably a hundred of our youth that are in another part of this building in a series of lessons tonight and um i wish they were here to hear this i wish that our youth but it already planned this some time ago and as a matter of fact um happy 10th anniversary to our student pastor our youth pastor brother hammond and sister hammond today is their 10th wedding anniversary that's hard to believe that's that's hard to believe our 10th wedding anniversary and they decided that things had had pretty well cooled down where they wanted to go where they wanted to go for the 10th anniversary has for some time been quite a hot spot for trouble uh but it it kindly had cooled down and so monday morning i took them to the airport and they flew out to new york city and um you know everything's cool down up there in new york city and so uh they're watching tonight and uh brother hammond and sister hammond we love and appreciate you and i'm thankful that we have such a caliber of a man that teaches our youth like brother hammond amen  i'm going to give you the biggest break financial break that you'll ever receive it's summed up in this simple statement it's an original of mine you want to break trust god and commit your finances to him the biggest financial break you'll ever get in life is to trust god and to commit your finances to him now i must tell you tonight there are two reasons that a good pastor would teach on money it would be to remind all of us it would be to remind all of us because we all do need to be reminded a lot of times a bible lesson is nothing new to you but god just knows that you need to be reminded you just need to be reminded and the next reason that we should teach on money starts with an r just like remind does it's called a revelation it's called a revelation because because quite honestly there are two ways to look at money or any other spiritual principle you can look at it through god's word or you can look at it through your wisdom you can look at it through god's word you can look at it through your wisdom i pray tonight that you will submit your spirit to god's word that you do want to see god's word you do want to see the subject of money through god's word we start in the book of proverbs this evening and proverbs is an anointed book filled with anointed wisdom anointed advice anointed wisdom and advice verse 4 that i opened with tonight simply said labor not to be rich labor not to be rich cease from thy own wisdom now wait a minute labor not to be rich that's exactly right you should not work to get rich you should not work to get rich you should work to provide for all of your needs and your family's needs your goal should not be to get rich cease from thine own wisdom see i said that because you were needing this second statement to be said because some of you are still reeling from there wait a minute i want to be rich well we got to qualify why do you want to be rich see the answer is in the why why do you want to be rich and unless it's got to do with advancing the kingdom of god that's the wrong reason for wanting to be rich cease from that own wisdom let's go down to verse 5. this is the reason he says wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not he's talking about riches he said are you going to focus on that which is not for riches certainly make themselves wings they fly away as an eagle toward heaven he says don't fix your your goals on being rich because riches have a way of flying away like an eagle to the heaven now turn with me to proverbs chapter 28 verse 19 staying in this book of anointed anointed god-given advice anointed god-given advice proverbs 28 verse 19. listen to this anointed advice he that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread but he that followeth after vain person shall have poverty enough now look at that statement if you will till the land it works tilling the land sowing the seed tending to the seed it works it works he said if you will till the land how much bread should you have plenty of bread but he that followeth after vain person shall have poverty enough you know what he's saying there with that simple verse there's always men out that are getting rich off of telling you how you can be rich but it only seems to work for them and not you oh you need to do this you need to do that you need to get into this pyramid this and you need to get into this over here you can make some big quick fast money can i tell you stop following that foolishness he said till the land do what works do what works till the land and you shall have plenty of bread you know we all start off as unskilled laborers we all start off that way we all started off about everybody in this room i'm teaching to tonight started off as a minimum wage person some of you are managers of your companies some of your managers where you work but you didn't start off a manager you didn't you didn't start off doing that some of you very successful in construction but you didn't start off a general contractor some of you are successful in the medical field but you didn't start off with the title that you've got you had to start somewhere you had to start somewhere and it probably wasn't very far away from minimum wage and can i tell you there is absolutely nothing wrong with working for minimum wage can i tell you minimum wage will put food on your table can i tell you staying busy at a minimum wage job will keep you busy and you don't have time to get preoccupied with other things but chasing all of these pyramid schemes and i'm i'm going to get really rich someday they don't put any food on your table till the land kill the land i promise you i promise you if you will do what works you can hone your skills in a trade let's go on verse 20 a faithful man shall abound with blessings are y'all still with me in verse 20. a faithful man lord let me add to it a faithful minimum wage worker shall abound with blessings now i know what some of you are saying tonight well preacher i bet you don't make minimum wage can i tell you that i started making minimum wage see too many times too many times the get rich quick people want to look at others that have been in it for a while and they want to take a quantum leap they want to take a quantum leap and get to where you're at i'm sorry if you're hired on somewhere at minimum wage stop looking at the man or woman that's been there 10 years let me make sure i've got the calculator going good start evangelizing oh you heard bishop the other night made a statement about brother carpenter saw the sought-after evangelist that oh oh you know man that was sought after well yeah but not at first not at first no not at first my revivals went something like uh had one in january and then i had another one booked in may so what do you do between january and may what do you do between those tell you what you do you make minimum wage somewhere and i tell you what you do to get a little extra money you go by i had a 1979 pinto that's what i traveled in and i found a man elmer bryant sold me some big stuffed animals that you see at the fair those big stuffed animals he sold me a carload of them for about seven dollars a piece and guess where saturday morning found your pastor over here at green acres flea market and i put all them lines and elephants and big old monkeys all over that pinto automobile and i sit out there and sold them for thirty dollars a piece so don't don't look tonight like yeah boy that's easy for you to talk about that i've been there and i don't think i would be here tonight if i hadn't been there faithful man shall abound with blessings but he that maketh watch this verse 20 he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent what's the opposite of innocent guilty verse 21 to have respect of persons is not good for a piece of bread that will a man transgress he that hasteneth in a hurry to be rich hath an evil eye considereth not that poverty shall come upon him i believe we can see through this anointed advice from god that we need to be faithful at what works we need to be faithful for what works i'll tell you one thing right now i'm not working for i'm not getting up working for less than 20 an hour well go hungry then let them repo your car let financial trouble set in and ruin your marriage it would be better for you to get up and go find a minimum wage job and work it works they'll give you a paycheck at the end of the week i need a camera up here right now i had my phone well let's go to first timothy chapter six in verse number five one of my favorite first and second timothies some of my favorite books in the new testament they're all my favorite but as a young pastor years ago i found out that paul wrote to a young pastor and gave him advice and so i felt like it would be good for me to read timothy first and second timothy over and over again because it was written to a young pastor and i i wanted paul's advice first timothy 6 and 5 perverse disputings of men of corrupt mind destitute of the truth supposing that gain is godliness from such withdrawal thyself are we not seeing this fulfilled in our lifetime in this health wealth and prosperity gospel which is in my consideration a damnable doctrine and i don't use that word much in the pulpit but that is a damnable doctrine the doctrine of health wealth and prosperity you know what it does don't you they teach that you should live in a gated community that you should drive a car above and beyond the normal that you should have certain name-brand watches and you should have a lot of real gold on your body they teach this and i'm not one to name names but the kenneth copeland's and the light teach this the jesse duplantis and all of these they teach this and that people will see you and will want to know your god will duh you mean i'm going to come to god because of a rolls royce i'm going to come to god because of a rolex watch i'm going to come to god because this god's going to give me all of this money i say that's the furthest thing from the gospel of jesus christ that i've ever heard you know what god god knows how much material things you can handle and god's not going to give you something that you can't handle god will give you exactly what you can handle supposing that supposing that gain is godliness the more you have the more godly you are that gain is godliness from such from such what does he say to him at the end of verse six from such what does he say help me now what do you think would i be far out of the book tonight sister roberts would i be far out of the book tonight that he said get away from them would i be out would i be outside the book tonight he said get away from them disassociate yourself from them don't don't don't don't don't don't be disassociate yourself them verse six but godliness with contentment is not only gain it's not only gain it's great gain godliness if you can have the spirit of seeking god godliness and being content about it can i tell you when you've got god you've got the riches of all riches when you've got god you've got the pearl of great price when you've got god why do you want to chase after fleeting momentary things it may or may not be why don't you seek after god the bible says godliness with contentment you know what that word contentment means satisfied satisfied oh i'm satisfied in jesus tonight satisfied satisfied he tells the reason why verse 7 for we brought nothing into this world and it is certain that we can carry nothing out doesn't that just make sense to you you came in this world with empty hands and guess how you're going out with empty hands verse 8 pay real close attention to this and having food and raiment let us therewith be content now he said godliness with contentment is great gain we know what godliness is godness is godliness is an attitude to seek after god it's an attitude a demeanor it's an attitude and a demeanor to seek after god but he says godliness with contentment is great gain but what does contentment look like well paul i'm glad you gave us the standard for contentment he gives us the standard having food and raiment let us be there with content unless you fasted today unless you fasted would you raise your hand if you ate if you ate a meal today would you raise your hand would you leave it raised would you leave it raised all right put your hand down so now everybody's ate in this place it looks like everybody's eight now let me check and see if everybody's got their clothes on let me see yeah i don't see no naked folks here tonight do you know that we all just qualified and god says you ought to be content godliness with contentment is great gain i ate a meal today several i ate a meal today and i've got clothes on and god says stop worrying about the riches outside and just get satisfied with me do you know that most of the world will go to go to bed hungry tonight oh come on we ought to thank god right now we ought to brother erickson ended sunday night in a sweet spirit of thanksgiving come on church let's let's let's really be thankful tonight most of the world's population goes to bed hungry tonight look where we're at this evening we ought to praise him right now you ought to give him more than a golf clap right now whoa hallelujah you ought to thank him right now god i i i just thank you god i just praise you god oh i just love you god oh brother erickson i may have you before i end tonight i may have you do that sweet course you ended the service sunday night didn't he end the service after a beautiful message on the isle of patmos i'll never be able to read that book again without thinking about that but didn't he end so sweet had a saying that he was singing that little coarse things thanks i give you thanks be ready i just might want you to do that because we ought to be thankful having food in raiment let us there with there would be let us be there with content verse 9 but they that will be rich look at that wording it's your will it's your drive more more better better than the neighbor's god better than anybody else's god they that will it's your will it's your drive for they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful lust which drown men in destruction and perdition that verse is not pretty for those that want to be rich talks about drowning drowning in troubles talks about snares traps that are laid church please don't be foolish to believe that those that make the unreal money and athletes that make the unreal money movie stars that make the unreal money let's settle it right now tonight could we settle it right now money will not make you happy you got to get that in your mind you can waste all your life going from one dream to another to the next money will never make you happy a financial advisor that does counseling to people to get out of debt he said it doesn't matter he said i have clients to come to me they make 80 000 a year and they simply say it's not enough i have clients that come to me that make 800 000 a year and guess what they say it's just not enough just not enough so let's get this let's get a good understanding money will never make you happy it was never intended to make you happy drowning now verse 10 for the love of money notice what it doesn't say it does not save for money is the root of all evil you know why it doesn't save money because god knows we have to have that god knows that something from the earliest parts of the bible there was things that were traded somebody traded this for that somebody traded they were a farmer they traded they traded something for something else and and and then currency came along and took the place of that so the bible does not say money is the root of all evil the bible says it right the love of money you see you either love money tonight or you love god there's no end there's no neutral ground there's no easement up the middle you either love money and you're going to seek after money and you're going to spend your energies your time trying to acquire money or you're going to love god either love god or love money but if you choose to love money here's what it says for the love of money is the root of all evil the root that word root there means the cause the cause of all evil the love of money is the root the cause of all evil which while some coveted after they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows see it doesn't look good for the person that will be rich and that has the love of money it doesn't end well for them they pierce themselves through not only that did you see that one part what do they air from what do they air from the error from the faith the most precious valuable thing you and i could ever possess our faith in our god when can money bring peace to a marriage when can money bring peace to a troubled teenager when can money bring healing to someone when can money bring deliverance it can't it can't it can't but can i tell you the faith can bring peace to your marriage and the faith can bring healing to your soul can i tell you the faith can bring peace to a troubled teenager the faith can do that why would we want to trade why would we want to trade the most precious thing that's ever come to earth for that which may take wings and fly at any time why would we want to do that church verse number 11. but thou o man of god now brother erickson that one letter o tells me of the passion that paul is pleading with when he injected when the holy ghost instructed for that o to be put there paul is on his tiptoes looking at timothy saying but oh man of god oh man of god flee these things should your pastor tonight teach this with any less passion than the original apostle paul that taught it to timothy should not i be on my tiptoes telling our youth and telling moms and dads here tonight let's flee from these things let's flee from the love of money let's flee from wanting to be rich let's understand where our true values are at can i tell you if you don't appreciate god tonight it's because you don't worship god if you don't really value god tonight it's because you've never really been in a situation when you needed god to come through but if you've ever been there you know that god will come through for you you know that god will come through for you you know that god will look down at green acres a flea market and god will say all right you sold your last stuffed animal get in that car boy and get to driving across the country and get to preaching the gospel oh man of god oh man of god flee these things follow after righteousness godliness faith love patience meekness oh church family tonight flee these things oh my good brother tonight flee these things my good sister not flee these run from them flee these things well what what am i supposed to what am i supposed to be attracted to righteousness what is righteousness righteousness is that word the right standing with god you're in good standing with god and can i tell you that when god is for you who can be against you you might be working on a job and you may have in the back of your mind oh i could never advance here this company's all locked up there i'm i'm a no name i could never advance here can i tell you something if god wants you to advance no man can be against you if god wants you to prosper you're going to prosper regardless of who may be against you  right standing with god godliness faith love god in his faith love you know what a lot of folks need to strive after a little sweetness you don't need to be snobby and rude can i tell you people on their way up step on everybody on their way up because they don't care for anybody but themselves but that's not us because we don't love money god let us have god put some sweetness inside of us lord love and faith he follows that verse 12 fight the good fight of faith lay hold on eternal life where unto thou art also called and has professed a good profession before many witnesses i give thee charge in the sight of god who quickeneth all things and before jesus christ who before pontus pilate witnessed a good confession that thou keep this commandment without spot unreal unrebukable unto the appearing of our lord jesus christ which in his times he shall show who is the blessed and only potentate the king of kings and the lord of lords who only hath immortality dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto whom no man has seen nor can see to whom be honor and power and everlasting amen charge them that are rich in this world charge them that are rich whatever that may be whatever that may be i have my opinion on what riches are i have my opinion on the standard of riches i believe the standard of riches is when god has given you more than you need when god has given you more than you need so now i'm going to charge all of you i'm going to charge all of you tonight because i really think we all fall into that category god has given us more than we need charge them that are rich in this world that they be not high-minded god helped me to be the same sister hammond's helped me god helped me to be the same in my spirit that i was over at green acres flea market selling stuffed animals out of the trunk of my car because a little money should not make you feel like you're better than everybody else a little bit of money a little bit a little bit of prosperity shouldn't make you walk around with your nose so high in the air if it took a if it come a rainstorm you'd drown to death god help us to stay humble even in the midst of our prosperity god help us to stay he said that they be not high-minded you're not high-minded start thinking they're better than everybody else because they drive a little better and wear a little better and live in a little better and i'm just a little better than you that's foolishness be thankful he said charge them that that are rich that they be not high-minded nor trust in uncertain riches don't put your trust in it don't put your trust in it one layoff could render you unable to make that mortgage no no no god would come through for me well he he may come through for you he may have a good rental for you to move into he may have a good apartment for you to move into is he less god is he more god because i own my home or is he less god and am i less person because i rent foolishness church absolute foolishness on that whether we own a home or rent a home we're the same value to our god the same value to our god charge them that are rich in this world that they be not high-minded nor trust in uncertain riches but in the living god who giveth us richly all things to enjoy you know god has given us a lot of things that we ought to thank him for your car will rust your clothes will eventually get holes in them or you get too big to wear them but there's some precious things can i tell you you can't put a price tag on a good marriage that's a precious thing you can't put a price tag on children that want to live for god that's a precious thing and what do you put a price tag on here we're all tonight we all believe there's one god and his name is jesus and the way to be baptized is in jesus name and when you receive the gift from the holy ghost you speak with other tongues and god has this wonderful lifestyle called holiness that protects us from a world that's absolutely crazy i tell you we ought to thank god tonight for the precious things  for the precious things who giveth us all who giveth us richly all things to enjoy can i tell you some things you ought to be enjoying does it come in the form of a car lot or a clothing or whatever it comes in the form of spiritual blessings verse 18 still charging the rich now that they do good that they be rich in good works ready to distribute willing to communicate laying up and store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come that they may lay hold on eternal life can i tell you where your treasure is there is your heart also where your treasure is there is your heart also can i tell you that when we serve the lord in our attendance here at church and when we serve the lord through tithe and offerings when we serve the lord can i tell you that we send up riches into the other world we're rust or moth or thieves or nothing can break through and destroy we are investing in another world the key phrase of this the key phrase of this verse is the love of money is the root of all evil can i tell you what the love of money does it robs you it robs you of contentment you'll never make enough to be content you'll never make enough to be satisfied see you get to making it and then guess what you get baptized with a spirit that everybody's out to get some of this and you begin to clench your fists and you begin to resent the love of money robs you of a spirit of satisfaction go with me to the book of matthew chapter six the book of matthew chapter 6 and let's listen to the lord in verse number 24 the lord jesus teaches us in matthew chapter 6 and verse 24. he says no man can serve two masters for either he will hate the one and love the other or else he will hold to the one and despise the other what are you talking about you cannot serve god and mammon mammon was the name of the money god he says you can't serve god and mammon you can't serve them at the same time you're either serving god or you're serving mammon but you are not serving god and mammon at the same time verse 25 therefore i say unto you take no thought for your life what you shall eat or what you shall drink nor yet for the body what you shall put on is not the life more than meat and the body then raiment behold the fowls of the air for they sow for they sow not neither do they reap nor gather into barns yet your heavenly father feedeth them watch this question here are ye not much better than they could you answer that for me are we humans not better than animals did god not create the animal did god not create us are we not much more better than animal now i know a lot of people are acting like animals but i'm i'm asking are we not better are we not better than the animals and the answer to that what is the answer there help me out now help me what is the answer there okay do you know what god does for the animals you ever seen any birds out in the field plowing you ever seen any you ever seen any bears or tigers up in the woods nailing up a house for them to live in no being ridiculous right you know why the birds don't have to plant guess why the birds don't have to plant god takes care of them they don't have to sow they don't have to reap god makes sure that the animals have things in their environment in their environment to eat and then he says then why are you worried about the basic things of life why is your mind worrying about the basic things i know what we're hearing on the news i watch the same news as you do i know what you're paying at the pump i go to the same place it wiggles that you do i know this world is upside down right now i live in the same world that you do but i want you to look at up here at your pastor tonight my faith isn't in washington dc my prayers are there but my faith is not there my faith is in the god that i serve and the god that i serve is able to take care of us in the area of our finances if we will trust him  i hope you all don't think this is a waste of your time to come out tonight you're not much better than they verse 27 which of you by taking thought can add one cubit into a statue i really think that's there some folks are just not content with how god made them it's not content with what how god made them i don't know like i got we it tickled tickled me and said carpenter and i'm not judging anybody all right but tickled us we went to south america to preach and they were telling us down there that women they don't like that they don't like their their their skin color and so they'll rub bleach on their skin and lay out in the sun to lighten their skin i told the brothers then i said that's funny i said we got these little long tubes in our country we got these little long tubes that people go and they don't like their skin they don't like how light their skin is they want to be a little darker so they'll i'm not preaching against them i'm using that as an example they just they don't like how god made them they they go through life not liking how god made he said which of you can take and can take thought can add one cubit to your stature i really think he's trying to tell us there stop wasting your brain power on things that you can't change be content with the way god made you god made you big and tall like brother dwayne orr be thankful for it bow your head when you go through the door god made you my size be thankful put your shoulders back and walk through it real proudly all right just just be thankful why take your thought you can't add anything verse 28 why take ye thought for raiment consider the lilies of the field how they grow they toil not neither do they spin and yet i say unto you that even solomon in all of his glory was not arrayed like one of these wherefore if god so clothed the grass in the field which today is and tomorrow is cast into the oven shall he not much more wish somebody shout shall he not how much what shall he not much more clothe you well we got we got walking you know when i was growing up you know what our closet was a 16-penny nail in the wall we didn't have any things to hang up so help me we didn't have anything set to tang up but if we did we had a 16 penny nail in the wall when our clothes got washed we stayed inside because we was naked well we didn't have the holy ghost back then we went outside oh okay i'll i'll confess that we went we did go outside but now look at us now church look at us now we got closets we got his and her closets we got walk-in closets i don't some of you might even have some drive-in closets i mean we're blessed with hasn't god been good to us much more oh ye of little faith therefore take no fault saying what shall we eat or what shall we drink or were with shall we be clothed for after all these he just he's just telling you the mindset of a world that simply lives what are we going to eat what are we going to wear what are we going to look like it is a world that is possessed with themselves he says this for after all these things verse 42 32 for after all these things do the gentiles seek for your heavenly father knoweth that you have need of all these things but seek ye first the kingdom of god and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you oh friend he says i know what you have need of but you need to get your mind on the most important thing and that is me and while you've got your mind on me i'll come back around and i'll bless you with the things i you know that you need you see we got to have there's really no need for me to start teaching on tithing until we get money right in our mind too many times we start with tithing well people ain't going listen people if they don't have the right understanding of money they sure enough are not going to have the right understanding of tithing but why not start a bible lesson on our attitude toward money and understand if if you just take this home with you tonight money will not make you happy i just think if i get a better car i'd be happy no you won't i think i could live in a different neighborhood i'd be no you
