the first chap the fourth chapter excuse me the book of Ephesians the 4th chapter going to read just a few verses Ephesians 4 and stay with me in the reading we'll begin at verse number 17 Ephesians 4 beginning with verse 17 this I say therefore testify in the Lord that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind having the understanding darken notice all of these characteristics that are mentioned here being alienated ated from the life of God through the ignorance that's in them because of the blindness of their heart who being past feeling have given themselves over un lasciviousness to work all uncleanness with greediness but ye have not so learned Christ if so be that ye have heard him and have been Tau by him as the truth is in Jesus that ye notice put off concerning the former conversation the old man everybody say the old man the old man which is corrupt according to the deceitful the deceitful lusts and be renewed in the spirit of your mind and that you put on the new man which after God is created in righteousness and Truth Holiness wherefore putting away lying speak every man truth with his neighbor for we are members one of another be ye angry and sin not let not the sun go down upon your wrath neither give place to the devil for a few minutes tonight I would speak to you on this subject dealing with the old man dealing with the the old man let's pray savior I love you I'm grateful for this wonderful con Congregation of Believers Lord I'm even more thankful for your word that is ever settled now God I pray that my heart would be open our hearts would be opened to receive fresh what your word would speak to us tonight Lord if there's someone here tonight Who's needing Special Touch special Revelation someone who hasn't repented of their sin hasn't been baptized in your name hasn't been filled with your spirit I pray that you would convict stir and change that they would act upon your word Lord be with us in all that we do in Jesus name we pray amen by the way before we go any further I'm happy to report we had two more from Pia baptized in Jesus name this afternoon isn't that awesome Glory Glory Glory what a wonderful wonderful report we've been baptizing folks almost every week here at First Apostolic church and that's why we're here so thank you Pia for continuing to minister and I I got news for you Pia is growing I've been seeing crowds of 50 and 60 now that started out with three and four God's doing a work at First Apostolic Church isn't that awesome isn't that an awesome report but tonight there's someone I need to deal with in this message I should give a warning to everybody that hear me about an individual who is doing his best to make our lives more difficult every day this individual hides in our everyday existence he shows up at the most inopportune inconvenient times he can ruin a perfect day he can mess up well-made plans he Delights and sewing Discord and disunity among brothers and sisters families and friends he can wreak havoc in the calmest of atmospheres he can find a dark cloud on a sunny day he can lay waste close relationships he can devastate the Harmony and integrity of most any situation I would show you his picture on the screens tonight however he wears so many disguises any one picture would only confuse us into thinking that's his only appearance now before all accuse the wrong individual I'm not talking about Satan tonight oh this individual has a great relationship with Satan he's influenced by him and listens to him however Satan is not the primary focus of my warning tonight instead I want to deal with someone we all must deal with and that's the old man now don't worry this is not a statement of agism I just want us to identify this guy who's been around a long long time no he's not the guy who yells at children get off of my lawn in your neighborhood he's not necessarily the guy that walks around in black socks and white tennis shoes and a Hawaiian shirt shaking his Cane in everybody's face he does not necessarily Drive in the left lane at 50 mil hour when the sign say 65 and he won't scoot over in the right lane instead we're talking about the old man who Paul would address in Ephesians and he gave characteristics he he said this old man has vanity of mind he's vain in his own thinking his understanding has been darkened he's alienated from the life of God through ignorance he he just is ignorant of anything that's really spiritual and from God blindness has taken over his heart he's pasted feelings he don't have any conscience he's given over to lasciviousness in another words words he's crude immorally he Delights in in in inappropriate behavior Behavior he works in all uncleanness he's greedy Paul said you haven't learned Christ if this old man's living in your life he said the influence of this old man has nothing to do with Christ verse 21 of our text said if so be that ye have heard him and have been taught by him as the truth is in Jesus that you put off concerning the former conversations the old man which is corrupt according to the deceitfulness of lust my question is Paul seems to spend a great deal of time speaking to the Ephesians about this old man why would Paul be such an expert on the old man anyway well please allow me a few moments of latitude with scriptural corroboration to give an informed opinion why Paul would address the old man in 2 Corinthians the 12th chapter we read one of Paul's confessions of great weakness it said in 12: 6 of 2 Corinthians for though I would desire to Glory I shall not be a fool for I will say the truth but now I forbear lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be or that he heareth of me now Paul's confessing a little bit he said I got a little bit of an ego here and lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations which was given to me a thorn in the flesh the messenger of Satan to Buffet me lest I should be exalted above measure he said I've got this situation in my life this Thorn In the Flesh that keeps me a little bit humble it's a messenger from Satan is the way he said it he said it keeps me reminded for this thing I besought the Lord Thrice that it might depart from me and he said unto me my grace is sufficient for thee for my strength is made perfect in weakness most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ May rest upon me therefore I take pleasure in infirmities and in reproaches in necessities and persecution in distresses for Christ's sake for when I am weak then am I strong preacher what are you trying to say this idea of Paul having a thorn in the flesh his confession to a weakness in his flesh a Tormentor has had a lot of opinions expressed about it we really do not know whether Paul was referring to a physical spiritual or emotional affliction or maybe something else entirely scripture simply does not give a definitive answer I did a little study and can you imagine these opinions I've been given these opinions that when he spoke metaphorically of a lit it wasn't a a literal form but it was a metaphorical statement that this was something that bothered me and there are theories that include temptation some said he had a chronic eye problem still others said he had had malaria migraines epilepsy or a speech disability some even say The Thorn refers to the person Alexander The coppersmith Who Paul said did a great deal of harm to him but I'm here to tell you no one can definitively say for sure what Paul's Thorn In the Flesh was right and I feel like my opinion is just as good as anybody else's so let me tell you tonight without making it a Doctrine I submit to you this question could it be that Paul had to cond continually deal with the old man rising up in him that he used to be you see God's goal with giving him Au Thorn In the Flesh there was something about him that kept him reminded of where he had come from before he got to thinking that that those Speckles on his shoulders was Halo dust he was reminded you may have a little bit of dandruff oh boy but let me tell you something you're not that Holy yet I got to give you a reminder it may be that Paul had a constant conflict with the old man right all those characteristics that was in our text Paul could have become quite hay knowing his educational background knowing his political influence all the knowledgeable things Paul was no dummy but Paul had issues that kept reminding him of who he was and where he had come from the Lord was more concerned with building Paul's character and preventing Pride instead of removing his problem you see there's some things that we ask God to remove that he never removes he just simply gives us Grace to deal with it that's right and while Paul's Thorn is uncertain I feel like that we at least can find some characteristics that Paul had that seemed to taint just a bit an otherwise Stellar personality when we study Paul for in the end of our text in Ephesians he made a statement he said be ye angry and sin not let not the sun go down upon your Earth neither give place to the devil could it be that one of Paul Paul's major problems was at time he had anger control problems could this have been part of Paul's otherwise wonderful personality when he was converted well let's look back at Paul what was Paul like before he became Paul the first time we find Paul his name is Saul and the Bible said yet breathing out threatenings and slaughterings against the Disciples of the Lord his old man sound like a pretty angry fell to me breathing out threatenings and slaughterings against the disciples in Acts 9 And1 you can read it for yourself he went to the high priest Desiring of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues that he found any in this way whether they were men or women he might bring them back found in Jerusalem he was an angry man Saul was an angry dude he didn't like these Christians rising up preaching this Jesus stuff I won't read all the details but you can read it for yourself he would journey to Damascus and suddenly a great light would shine around about him he would be stricken to the Earth he would hear a voice out of heaven and he would say Lord Lord who art thou when that voice called his name and the voice out of Heaven would say I am Jesus whom thou pers persecutest it's hard for thee to kick against the prick and he would begin trembling and be astonished and we have to say what would you have me do Lord now stay with me a moment for some of us can look back at what we were as an old man the old man that we came from the old creature that we used to be some of us were those who moved in and out of the unmanageable anger some of us found ourselves with those folks that were angry at the whole world all right and God had to knock us down down and blind us to get us to stand up and see the light let me tell you Saul didn't start out even with all of his great attributes as this great individual he was an angry man but I want you to notice laced through his ministry after he became Paul after he began establishing churches Paul was not perfect Paul made mistakes over in Acts the 15th chapter again I will paraphrase some but Paul and Barnabas got together and they were going to do some Mission work they were going back to visit the churches that they had established to see how they had grown and in Acts 15 Barnabas said hey I think this is a great idea Paul to go visit the church he said by the way he said uh I'd like to take John Mark with us now we're dealing with the Apostle Paul now the Apostle Paul has decided that we're going to go visit the churches verse 38 said but Paul thought not good to take him with them who departed from them at pamilia and went not with them to the work now again giving you the background John Mark the first time when they had gone on a mission's journey had got homesick and went back home Barnabas still valued John Mark's Ministry but Paul was holding a grudge you mean the apostle was holding a grudge apparently so for the Bible says and the contention was so sharp between them that they departed aunder one from another you're talking about the Apostle Paul the one who was Shipwrecked the one who did all those great things and wrote all those wonderful letters let me tell you even the Apostle Paul sometimes could have the old man show up in his life the old man showed back up his anger came up to the point it caused a split and a division when they were trying to do a mission work and that split was so so strong they were divided aund barnab Barnabas would take John Mark and Paul would take Silas well preacher that seems to be an isolated incident well let me give you a little more evidence about the old man still jumping up in Paul's life in Acts 23 when Paul was being questioned before the council he said men and Brethren I have lived in all good conscience before God even to this day he was testifying he was in control and the high priest ananas commanded them that stood by him to Smite him in the mouth capow right in the kisser you know what Paul said God SM thee thou whed wall for sest thou to judge me after the law commanding me to be smitten contrary to the law sound like Paul got upset sound like the old man might have showed back up he apparently didn't have his wwjd bracelet on what would Jesus do cuz when they question Jesus the Bible tells us that he answered not a word old Paul that had been telling everybody to act like Jesus suddenly when he was in a simular situation he began cursing them and telling them hey who Do You Think You Are I'm a citizen you smite me someone standing by said revile us thou God's high priest then said Paul I wish not Brethren that he was the high priest for is written Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people suddenly Paul's heart was smitten the old man had jumped up he had lost his temper when he was supposed to be a witness I hope you can see what I'm trying to get across to you we all have a battle with the old man inside of us there's a constant conflict that goes on is there any reason to not understand that apparently part of Paul's weakness was he had a little bit of problem managing his t temper even in Acts 26 when he gave his testimony to fesus y'all remember that he gave his testimony to fesus and the Bible said he got beside himself now he was happy but there was something in his personality Paul got so excited Festus said with a loud voice Paul Thou Art beside thyself much learning do make thee mad he had to calm down again Now understand what I'm trying to get across in Paul's Zeal he apparently had to sometimes deal with inordinate anger was that his Thorn In the Flesh I don't know but it was a weakness in his personality that's why he would tell the Ephesians be angry and sin not he was speaking from experience in iians 4:30 if you go on it says and he and grieve not the holy spirit of God whereby you are sealed unto the day let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and evil speaking be put away from you with all malice Paul apparently had some firsthand experience of dealing with the old man when his anger would jump up throughout scripture anger is condemned Proverbs said he that as soon angry dealth foolishly well preacher I you just talking about the old man you're being mighty gender specific no no no for Proverbs 21:19 said it's better to dwell in in the wilderness than with a contentious and angry woman we've all got the old nature in us that's right in fact Proverbs 22 said make no friendship with an Ang Ang Ry man and with a furious man Thou shalt not go lest thou learn his ways and get a snare to thy Soul Bishop tells a story many years ago of talking with a fellow he said brother M actually he called him brother Billy he said brother Billy he said had something happen to me he said I've got a couple of sons and he said I've got a lawnmower at my house and he said when it's time to mow the grass he said my boys can go out there and he said they can put fuel in that mower they can pull the choke back and said they'll pull that rope and the first time that mower will start for them he said but I can go out there he said I can fill it up with fuel he said' I can pull that choke back and said out and it won't start and it won't start that's the best mower I've got sorry y'all he said so the other day the boys weren't around I decided I was going to do some mowing said I went out and he said I put the fuel in I pulled the choke back and it and he said something came over me I said old mower if you won't start for me you're not going to start for anybody else again he said I went and got a sledgehammer and he said I commenced to beating the top up on that Mower and he said about the fourth time I hit that mower he said I knocked the top off of that Mower and he said did you know there's a spring in there that's holding that together oh did I tell you he was telling Bishop this story from a hospital bed for when he knocked the top off that mower that big spindle on the top and that spring released and hit him in the knee he was injured and was in the hospital because he beat up a lawnmower and it beat him back up what are you saying preacher if we aren't careful even in our daytoday lives we can let the old man rise up when us we can Holy Ghost fill people if we aren't careful the enemy can tempt us and the old man will rise up inside of us and we will do dumb stuff somebody will get in the left lane in the passing lane doing 50 H I've long told folks if you want to see who's really got the Holy Ghost Don't Come Around The Altar go to a Christian School basketball game see I've quit preaching started meddling right let me tell you the old man wants to show up at your door the old man wants to take back over and if you aren't careful and don't keep that old man put away he'll Rise Up In You anger will take over you'll deal with some things that you never thought was in you man I wish I was preaching this better Ecclesiastes said be not Hasty in thy Spirit to be angry for anger resteth in the bosom of fools that's the old man young people hear me don't go around living in Anger it said make no friendship with an angry man with a furious man Thou shalt not go lest thou learn his ways and get a snare to thy Soul yes I've dealt with a few of those folks through the years that like to show how angry they were going into their house and there' be big holes in the drywall you know I'll show them I also running a few of those folks had cats on their hand because they found out where the stud was in the drywall we're better than that the Holy Ghost should make us better than that but there must be a constant conflict going on in most lives that we've got to say oh man you've got to be put away I'm not getting this Spirit from Christ when I become so angry and I become out of control but preacher does God use people like that God used angry people need I tell you more than reminds you of the characteristics of Moses Moses would see in his youth an Israelite and an Egyptian striving against each other the Egyptian with a whip beating an Israelite he would look the Bible said he looked around see if anyone was watching and he slew the Egyptian later on there would be two Israelites who were in a dispute and he would try to separate them they'd say are you going to do us the way you did that Egyptian and he said was smok in his heart to realize that this is not a secret this thing wasn't done in secret if we aren't careful not those spiritual things that we experience in the house of God but in our day-to-day lives we can find ourselves in situations that can forever limit our scope of ability to be a witness because we lost our temper right I realize this may not be a message of some great spiritual significance for you but let me tell you the this will keep some of you out of prison it'll keep some of you out of an early grave it'll let you live with your family happily before you let road rage take over in your life don't let the old man rise up in you that's don't forget Moses is the only person yet that broke all Ten Commandments at once and you know what happened when he did it it said that Moses anger waxed hot and he cast the tablets out of his hands and break them beneath the mountain Moses had been given the Ten Commandments written by the Finger of God and he became so angry at the children of Israel who had gone into idolatry when he came back off of the mountain in a fit of rage he would break the tablets and he would have to spend another 40 Days in the mountains carving by hand the Commandments that God had given him but it would even have it have longer lasting effects Moses in his greatness would also find himself at another time having a hard time dealing with criticism in numbers 20 the Bible says then came the children of Israel even the whole congregation in the desert of Zen in the first month and the people Abode in cadesh and cadesh and Miriam died there and was buried there and there was no water for the congregation and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron and the people ched with Moses and spake saying would God that we had died when our Brethren died before the Lord and they have yet brought up the congregation of the Lord Into the Wilderness that we and our cattle should die there wherefore have you made us to come up out of Egypt to bring us into this evil place it it is no place of seeds or of figs or of vines or of pomegranates neither is there any water to drink now Moses was called of God he was the spokesman he would lead God's people out of the bondage of Egypt he would be there to divide the waters the Red Sea that they would walk across on dry ground he would be Leading the People to the promised land yet in a snapshot of time he finds himself being criticized his leadership being questioned he and Aaron the Bible tells us went from the presence of the assembly under the door of the tab of the congregation and they fell on their faces and the glory of the Lord appeared to them and notice this the Lord spake unto Moses saying take the rod gather thou the assembly together thou and Aaron thy brother and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes and it shall give forth water and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock so Thou shalt give the congregation and their Beast drinks and Moses took the rod from before the Lord as he had commanded him and Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock now please let me explain to you what can sometimes happen to us sometimes the old man will rise up in our lives even when God is answering prayer and validating our prayers and if we aren't careful let the old man rise up when God's doing something he'd been criticized he went and prayed and God just matter of factly said okay no problem grab the rod go out get everybody together speak to the Rock God's going to provide it's it this is going to be something we ought to Rejoice about but Moses had taken the criticism personally let me pause and tell everybody in the house children of God don't take it personal even if it's meant to be there's some stuff you need to just let go on and say God I give you glory I know you're still working somebody may have a criticism somebody may have something bad to say some negative Nelly may be showing up and appear to be influencing folks just talk to the Lord about it what's the old saying you can talk about me all you please I'll talk about you down on my knees just pray about about it let God do the work but Moses couldn't resist all he had to do was speak to the Rock but notice how he answered the people you got everybody together he said here now ye Rebels had to give everybody a little shot do do you detect a bit of personal animosity in Moses presentation here now you rebels must we fetch you water out of the Rock and Moses lifted up his hand and with his Rod he smoke the rock twice and the water came out abundantly and the congregation drank and their beasts also well it don't matter speak Smite they got it accomplished did they verse 12 says and the Lord SP spake unto Moses and Aaron and said because you believed me not to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel therefore ye shall not bring their con this congregation into the land which I have spoken and given thee he said because you had to make it personal somebody hear me in the house there's going to be Seasons that things are going to feel personal in your life that you need to back up and put it in the Lord's hands don't let that criticism ISM bother you know that God is working speak that thing in jesus' name and claim it don't try to beat the water out of the rock well enough said of examples how should we know and what should we do to deal with the old man Paul had enough information and enough experience apparently that he would give some direction in dealing with the old man in Romans 7 he said for we know that the law is spiritual but I'm carnal sold under sin notice this for that which I do I allow not for what I would that do I not but what I hate that I do sound like the conflict's going on with the old man if then I do that which I would not I consent un the law that is good now then it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me for I know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I find not he's fighting with the old man for the good I would I do not but the evil which I would not that I do now if I do that I would not it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me I find then a law that when I would do good evil is present with me for I Delight in the law of God the after the inward man but I see another law in my members Waring against the law of my mind bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members oh Wretched Man that I am old man has been showing up who shall deliver me from the body of this death I thank God through Jesus Christ Our Lord so then with the mind I myself serve the law of God but the F with the flesh the law of sin there's a battle going on he said I've got to have a renewed spirit in Ephesians in our text and be renewed in the spirit of your mind let me charge us all let's get our minds more closely on Jesus all the noise of this world only wakes up the old man I need my mind on Jesus I need dwelling and thinking about the things of the Lord I don't need my existence cluttered with all the things that feed the old man he said and that you put on the new man which after God is created and righteousness and true Holiness how do you get rid of the old man you put on the new man with righteousness and Holiness why do we live a holy life why do we walk a holy life why do we talk a holy life it reminds us of the new man it puts the old man away Hallelujah Romans said I beseech you Brethren by the mercies of God that you present your bodies a Living Sacrifice holy acceptable unto God which is your reasonable service the not conformed to this world why must there be separation between the church and the world we must not conform to the world but be you transformed by the renewing of your mind it's getting rid of the old man the old man has to die stand with me he told the Galatians notice this is laced through Paul's Ministry he told the Galatians he Saidi crucified with Christ nevertheless I live yet not I but Christ liveth in me he told the church at Corinth he said I Die daily now which is it Paul he said I'm crucified with Christ nevertheless I live he told the Corinthians he said I Die daily these again were metaphoric statements they were were were examples of the conflict that he was so familiar with so I challenge every individual in this house tonight could we make it a point to look inside and see who's been directing Our Lives let's see who's trying to awaken in our lives he also told the Corinthians in 2 Corinthians 516 wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh y though we have known Christ after the flesh yet now henceforth know we him no more therefore If any man be in Christ Jesus he's a new Creature if I can be in Christ if I can put myself in Christ old things are passed away the the old man needs to pass away he needs to be put to death he needs to be crucified behold All Things become new how do you do that he told the Colossians what are you in love with what are your affections toward he said set your affections on things above not on things of the earth then in verse 10 of Colossians 3 he said I have put on the new man which is renewed in the knowledge after the image of him that is created Ed in him and then he went on to say down in verse 13 and I'm skipping ahead just a bit forbearing what does it mean to be forbearing to be forbearing means to be patient and restrained with others forbearing one another isn't amazing how patient we can become with the old man in our life but the old man of everybody else's life we can't be patient and restrained about it I want to tell about it I want to rebuke it in them I can't be patient with he said forbearing one another If any man have a quarrel against any even as Christ forgave you so also do ye and one more verse and above all these things put on charity which is the bond of perfectness do you want to be perfect tonight I do it's an unattainable goal in my flesh but I want to be as perfect as I can how do I do it I put on charity I put on the love of God not the lust of the world but the love of God which is the bond of perfectness I would ask everybody in the house we are new creatures in Christ first of all if you're in this house and you've never repented of your sins I'm here to tell you you can't do these things on your own this is not psychology you got to repent of your sins there's a simple plan to repent of your sins to take on Jesus it's the symbolic Act of the death both of Christ death burial and Resurrection but it's also the symbolic death of that old man in us taking on his name and water baptism becoming Jesus in your life then suddenly the new man rises forth you sh receive the gift of the Holy Ghost if you have never received the gift of the Holy Ghost it's here for you tonight it's here in these altars but I also address every individual in this house that's not perfect all you perfect folks we're already finished y'all can go but the rest of us are going to stay just a few moments longer for I want to make sure that every day the old man is put to death again that I fresh and new walk in the charity and the love of Christ I don't know what you may have faced Paul had to repent time and time again Paul had a thorn in the F flesh that he dealt with and he told us about so I'd ask you whatever you've had to deal with if you got a temp don't get mad Stay Saved if you've got issues of the flesh that seem to keep rising up take them to Jesus even this night in our frailties in our weaknesses let me do this let me open the altars for every one of us if you need the Holy Ghost if you need to repent or if you want to just say Lord I want to make sure the old man is still dead in my life would you step out from your seats would you gather around this Altar for a season of prayer a season of reflecting a season of saying I want the new man to reign in me hallelujah hallelujah yes yes would you talk to him right now talk to him right now Jesus I love you yes Lord I need to be L God if I've got a grudge I've been holy if there's somebody that I won't speak to God I pray that right now God I pray that you would melt my heart I will not wait one more night for someone to come to me God I'm going to go to them and say I'm sorry I'm sorry I want the new man to reign in me I want the love of God I want the forbearance of patience Lord I want to love my brothers in my sister God let me cleanse myself from all unrighteousness Lord let me defeat anger in my life Lord let me defeat those things that would limit me from doing what I should do in you hey hey it's not about me yeah yeah I decree I decrease you as you increase about yeah yeah [Music] Hallelujah as you increase about about not about [Music] Mee you all about you it's all about yeah I decrease I decrease you increase not it's not about I decree [Applause] you it's all about
