I'm gonna let you start moving to your seats we greet you this Sunday evening in the precious name of Jesus so good to see every one of you here in the house of the Lord tonight I join with the voices that have gone before me by welcoming you thank you for worshiping with us I'll also join with The Bishop's Voice to my granddaughter and say a happy birthday and I also want to say happy birthday at this sister Alexandria farmer happy birthday to you give her a great big hand Lord bless you and I'll say ah I happen to find out that I've got home folks and friends that just used to live here in Knoxville they're still home folks even though they're in San Antonio Texas now Joe and Alicia Lockhart and Avery we're glad to have you worshiping with us tonight um I I saw Joe back there and I told him we used to play softball together in fact I said we used to play a little softball alone my part it was very little but uh it's good to have you all home tonight Lord bless you I love you dearly and it's good to see all of you here at First Apostolic church today what a wonderful [Music] offices we've enjoyed the past few weeks and I want to take us to the word of the Lord and I hope I've picked a subject that won't take us down from all the good Services we've had and you'll understand what I mean when I when I read my text but I believe the Lord has something for us calling your attention to the Book of Mark the 12th chapter Mark the 12th chapter I want to begin reading at verse number 13. and they sinned unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the herodians to catch him in his words now in today's binocular that means they were getting ready to ask some gotcha questions [Music] and when they were come they said unto him master we know that they are true man they're buttered him up notice it and cares for no man for thou regardest not the person of men it's just the way of God is true and they ask this is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not shall we give or shall we not give but he knowing their hypocrisy said unto them me bring me a penny that I may see it and they brought it and he said to them who is this image and superscription and they said unto him Caesars and Jesus answering and said in them render to Caesar the things that are Caesars render to God the things that are God's and they marveled at him now I told you today is April 16th one day April after April 15th thank you so my title is this tax day I told you this might take you down what will I render to god let's pray savior I love you I'm grateful for your many blessings I thank you so much for the wonderful praise that have gone up and Lord I Thank You for Your Presence has come down pray that your word would reach deep in our hearts and minister to us Lord once again I stand in awe of the opportunity and Lord I Thank you for the privilege of carrying your word not of what I can do or say but Lord what your word tells us Lord let us receive it into our hearts this night in Jesus name we pray amen tax day I have some awesome news for everyone on this April 16th you don't have to pay your taxes this year on April 15th that's cause called a pause for effect normally taxes are due on April the 15th I've got great news I've got a reprieve for everybody in the house taxes aren't due until Tuesday April 18th instead of the usual 15th because tax day can occur on holidays or weekends isn't that generous of them after all brother Anthony already told us today's National Orchid day so we get an extra three days to file our 2022 taxes now everybody settle down you don't have to take a lap or rolling the floor and some might say Pastor after the wonderful series of services we've had we had a wonderful Palm Sunday and talked about Jesus and and the excitement of him coming into Jerusalem and then we had a wonderful Resurrection Sunday and talked about the death burial and Resurrection victory over the great how in the world after the wonderful message we heard this morning about the trail to Emmaus and the pathway to Emmaus how could you take us down and talk about taxes well I don't want to give you this as a noun or thought so please take heart I'm not here tonight to dwell on receipts deductions and liabilities not going to talk about returns or filing forms and I'm not here to remind you of what you may or may not owe Uncle Sam or even Rejoice with you in the possibility of a tax refund but I do want to remind all of us that Jesus faced in his Humanity the same temptations that we take face back Hebrews said it this way in Hebrews 4 15 for we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities but with all points tempted like as we are yet without sin even Jesus and his flesh was tempted to maybe uh not do all he should do on his taxes but he didn't sin the Bible said so understand our texts Jesus was once again being questions questioned by the aristocracy and the religious Elite of his day and they indeed were asking a gotcha question they knew that Jesus had condemned their elitism and valued the freedom and equality of all men they were trying to frame a question that would lead Jesus to appear rebellious to the Roman government and in turn make his spiritual teachings appear subversive or at the least inconsistent it was a clear attempt to take his spiritual principles and try to make them literal as to defy government and civil Authority you know we can learn from that for even today we have to be careful and cautious in the way we frame our words in the spirit to a carnal world we have to be careful the way we talk less folks would not understand some of the fundamental phrases that we use when we say I Die daily that doesn't mean that we have daily suicide attempts right spiritual warfare does not mean collecting bombs and guns saying I'm crucified with Christ doesn't mean nails and crosses for us all at least not yet death burial and resurrection and baptism doesn't deal with killings Graves and exhuming bodies These Are Spiritual analogies and comparisons that we the Believers understand and they give us spiritual examples to live by and symbolic acts with spiritual significance that are absolutely essential to the Christian law so Jesus knowing the in the intentions of the Pharisees and the herodians said hey bring me a piece of money bring me a penny the legal tender of that day and he asked them said whose image is on the coin to which they replied Caesars and Jesus answered their gotcha question that said is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar and he answered it this way render to Caesar what is Caesar's render to God what is God's I know that most of us understand the impr the principle and the importance in living in this world that we are in but not of of taking care of our civil responsibilities and rendering unto civil government what we owe we know if we don't pay our taxes there are agents that will come and take us to the Pokey we understand what happens if you don't obey civil law we understand what it means to render to the government what the government should get and Jesus was letting them know I'm not here to be rebellious against the government but he also said something else that we sometimes gloss over he said render to God what belongs to God let me ask us tonight what are we rendering to God what do we have and what do we owe God why we pay our taxes and we fill out our forms and we meet our deadlines am I doing for God what I'm supposed to do what will I render to God the term rendered defined means to provide or give to provide Supply furnish contribute to make available to offer what will I offer God what will I make of myself available to him what will I render to God to submit or present for inspection or consideration do I want God inspecting me can I present myself to God the term render in Greek defined is to give back and restore well if I'm going to give to God I first have to figure out what my debt is what can I give back to God what can I restore to God how can I pay the debt that I owe Hebrews 10 1 says this for the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers they're unto perfect Hebrews was reminding this new generation and this new dispensation that blood sacrifice never forgave sin and he even tells them this for then would they have not ceased to be offered Now understand the Simplicity of what Hebrews is saying Hebrews is saying had blood sacrifice forgiven sin then once you gave it then there wouldn't be need forth the next year what he's basically saying he said for then they would have ceased would not they have ceased to offer because that the worshipers once purged should have had no more conscious of sins but in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sin every year all they were doing when they gave blood sacrifice was pushing their sins ahead one year they weren't getting their sins forgiven they were in a new dispensation but in those sacrifices there is a remembrance of sin made of sin every year for it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sin all animal sacrifice did was get a one-year extension on sin's death with high interest compounding daily sin was getting worse every year and every day as long as it was being pushed forward and we must realize what the sin debt being paid what we really should render to God means because Hebrews 10 and 10 said by the which will we will we are sacrificed through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all once and for all it has been settled brother O'Brien when he laid his life down for me I've been forgiven I the death's been paid I owed the debt of sin where lust is conceived it bringeth forth Sin Sin and when it is finished it brings forth death I was bound for death but somebody paid my debt and I owe him I owe Christ tonight I've got a debt that I owe what will I render to God [Applause] can I give back to him oh I understand rendered a Caesar but what will I render to God Romans 12 1 said I beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of God that ye present your bodies a Living Sacrifice holy acceptable unto God which is your reasonable service now I've heard some take this term reasonable service and try to say well it's only reasonable to give God just so much of your time and so much of your effort no it's only reasonable to give him everything you've got he said and be not conformed to this world be you transformed by the renewing of your mind sometimes I got to go back and get my mind renewed I got to get my thinking straightened out I've got to stop seeing things through eyes of the Flesh and get my mind transformed and know that I'm I'm supposed to be a living sacrifice every day unto God that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God pastor how do you pay the one who has it all how do I pay the debt to God who has it all in Psalms the psalmist speaking in first person of God said it this way in Psalms 50 and 10. for every beast of the forest is mine and the cattle upon a thousand hell well I can't give him beasts or cattle it's already his maybe I can go hunting I can go to the Duck Blind and I can give him some fouls no I know all the fowls of the mountains and the wild beasts of them are mine notice again the psalm is writing in first person as of God said if I were hungry I would not tell thee speaking in human terms deity at this hand if God got hungry he wouldn't be asking me to feed him especially wouldn't ask me to feed him you never had my cooking if you go much past boil water and popcorn you're in trouble for me thank God for a good wife that knows how to cook well he said if I were hungry I would not tell thee for the world is mine and the fullness thereof how can I pay God when it's all his already will I eat the Flesh of bulls he doesn't need a steak or drink the blood of goats but here's how you pay God offer unto God Thanksgiving that's what God is looking for a thankful people oh could I stand one more time and lift my hands and say God I thank you I'm thankful for what you've done look around you take account of what God's done for you look at your family look at your spouse look at your children can you throw your hands up and say God I want to thank you oh before I get too ugly about what's happening in this world God I want to thank you that you woke me up this morning you started me on my way I woke up with a sound mind I had a church to go to I had I to give him thanks that's what I can render I can't giving things I can't give him beasts I can't give him wealth give him thanks pay thy vows unto the most high and then notice verse number 15. let this make sense to you and call upon me in the day of trouble you know there's some folks like you to call them when everything's going good but there's trouble they don't want you to answer their phone God's just the opposite God needs our needs God Delights in meeting the needs when you got trouble God says call me if you've got a situation call on Jesus we'll call everybody else we'll talk to the psychologist we'll talk to the doctor some of us will talk to the barber and the mechanic before we'll talk to God he said he said call upon me in the day of day of trouble what can I render God I got another problem God I've been serving you Faithfully God I've been following you I've been worshiping you I'm giving thanks but I want to bring something to you not so great God would you help me in my time of trouble he said I will deliver thee and thou shalt glorify me I'm going to give him praise I'm gonna have a testimony well what is this legal tender they had a coin what's the legal tender first chronicles 16 23 said sing unto the Lord all the Earth show forth from the day today his salvation you know what we all need to have a song in our heart brother Sherwin was going about his rounds I was coming out of my office man please understand some folks need a microphone other folks need to stay in the shower when they're seeing you I didn't know anybody was listening but brother Sherwin gave me a thumbs up he's he said sing it pastor I ought to have a song in my heart but here's the point if I sing I need to sing unto the Lord well I want to sing unto the congregation so I will get great Applause and everyone will say what a beautiful voice you have you singing for the wrong reason I want everybody to compliment me oh thank you brother Hill you're the most amazing praise and worship leader I thank you for all you do but that's not why you're singing you're singing unto the Lord praise team you're singing unto the Lord every choir member you're singing unto the Lord if you're singing in the shower and you're in the key of z sing unto the Lord why because I need to render something to him I gotta have a song in my heart unto the Lord it's not about me it's not about accolades but I want to sing to the Lord [Applause] declare his glory among the rest of the church I'm a Christian when I walk in here on Sunday but on Monday I'm Undercover no he said declare his glory among the heathens I'm glad I worked in a Christian School I don't deal with heathens like some of you folks have to sometimes you're gonna find you yourself in a room full of heathens what are you gonna be I'm going to declare his glory either and even among the Heathen His Marvelous Works among all nations I'm not ashamed to be a Christian I'm not ashamed to be a follower of Christ for great is the Lord and greatly to be praised he also is to be feared above all gods for all gods with the little G of the people or Idols but the Lord made the heavens man I can itemize a bunch of things that people make Gods but they didn't hang the heavens MLB NBA PGA NFL NCAA may be your God but that didn't hang the heavens let me tell you there isn't but one God who hung the heavens there's only one God who created all of this place and it belongs to him and that's who I will worship that's who I will serve [Applause] all glory glory and honor are in his presence strength and gladness in his place give unto the Lord ye Kindred of the people given to the Lord glory and strength yes I'll give unto him when I'm weak but I'm also going to give him my strength whatever strength I may have whatever abilities I may have I've got to render that to God verse 29. give unto the Lord the glory do unto his name what's he do how much Glory God deserve and you know what it says it says bring an offering bring an offer an offering you see we give not as some investment plan that we're doing it for a return only that just is one of the benefits of giving to God but we give because it's due to him how can I repay the sin death that was paid some of you if you will really be honest with yourself and you'll think of the circumstances that got you the job you're working right now it had to be God you're just not that smart I'm talking to me now it had to be God that afforded me the opportunity to carry his word it's nothing that I am nothing I could be oh God I give you glory I'm going to give of whatever substance you've provided me you've given us a plan he's given us a plan of tithe and offering excellent you know pastoring you have these discussions with yourself sometimes and when you discuss with yourself and you leave the Lord out of it you can you can find a rabbit hole to go down sometimes you feel like as a pastor being honest is transparent here it is oh got to be careful that that preaching on tithe and offering too much everybody thinks you're after money for you no I'm after blessings for you I want you to enjoy the blessings that go along with The Obedience of giving to God of paying your time giving your and proving him he wants to give to you again and again why will I render I'll render what he's blessed me with I'll render the tithe I will give down he said bring an offering and come before him you know what that means to me show up to church come before him well now I know the Lord's everywhere but coming before him he means coming to his place to the house of worship coming to this commonplace that we worship together bring an offering come before him Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness what does that mean that means the way you walk the way you talk the way you act the way you dress the way you live you adopt a holy lifestyle before God you are Holiness in everything you do in your appearance your Holiness in your talk your Holiness in the way you conduct your business your Holiness everything about you should exemplify Christ I owe him that that's what I need to render and Hosea said it this way in Hosea 14 2 take with you words and turn to the Lord unto him take away all iniquity receive us graciously so will we render the calves of our lips the calves of Our Lives that's the sacrifices of our mouth but the carpenter gave us a wonderful example at camp meeting last year and from time to time I repeat it sometimes you need to pray loud enough that you can hear yourself praying pray loud enough that you can hear your separate oh I'm just praying but it's just in my mind sometimes you need to render the calves the sacrifices of your lips you need to say something to God you mean he can't read my mind sure he can but he wants you to say something because you know who else can hear it when you say something the devil can't read your mind but he can hear what you say somebody better here somebody better hear what the preacher said sometimes you need to speak some stuff out and rebuke the devil in Jesus name he needs to hear you crying out and calling on the Lord and he's going to say I don't want none of that I don't want near that he's calling on Jesus she's calling on the name of Jesus render the calves of your lips give God your voice and your lips Jeremiah said bring sacrifices of Praise unto the house of the Lord that means when you come into the house of God you need to be bringing something you bring your praise with you get your praise on Hebrews 13 15 said by him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name that's what I'm going to render to God I'm going to speak some stuff out and verse 16 says this here's another sacrifice I need to render to God but to do good and to communicate forget not for with such sacrifices God is well pleased did you know we're living in a world that Delights itself in miscommunication I'm just going to put it out there how many characters have I got left I want to join all the other two idiots I don't care what people think I don't care if they misunderstand I'm mad I mean I mean you've even if somebody could see some of us tweeting you'd see Angry thumbs oh God let me do the sacrifices of communications let me speak kind words let me have the voice of Christ ministering to those who even I differ with look I I have to get on this soapbox every so often so I'm going to climb back up on it I've preached this at conferences to preachers so I can preach this to you as Saints as well it would do many of us great good to our testimony hear me we could really improve our testimony if a lot of us would go on all of our social media pages and Purge it from stuff that's controversy controversial politically and socially and start talking more about Jesus oh preacher you're just trying to edit what I say no I'm wanting to widen the scope of everybody that we can witness to I don't want them knowing my politics I want them known about Jesus I preacher are you compromising with social Conformity absolutely not they're social people out there that's got some of the goofiest ideas you could ever think of but I can never win them if I'm criticizing them socially if I'll tell them about Jesus I can change their social attitude as as long as they're worried about my politics they can hear about Jesus I need to put Jesus out there first that's what I need to render I need to [Applause] some think I've stopped preaching and started meddling but that's okay there needs to be more voices that's telling people about Jesus and they say my I wonder what they believe on this subject maybe I ought to go over there to church and they walk in and somebody shakes their hand at the front door and says welcome to First Apostolic Church they don't look like us they don't act like us they don't even smell like us but there was something that starts drawing them because everybody's been talking about Jesus and giving praise and adoring him and they come into the house of God and somebody's prepared to give worship and praise and suddenly they may not know what your politics are and probably wouldn't agree with them but suddenly start feeling something I've seen it happen too many times there's too many faces in this house that once upon a time you were lost you didn't think the church was a place you'd ever be but you came in in the love of Christ started ministering to your heart started touching your soul and suddenly you said forget all that ever the other stuff I'm going to repent I'm going to take his name on I'm gonna I'm gonna receive his Spirit In Me see Jesus needs to he can do a miracle to fix your tax situation in any other situation I got to tell y'all a quick story you know when we moved into this building it was an adjustment even having a slant floor and I know some folks it's kind of tough standing on slant floor and I get that and you feel like you're leaning forward I get that but let me tell you one of the good byproducts of of Heaven a slant floor in the church man I I've found all kinds of goodies at the altar I found super balls Hot Wheels golf balls they wouldn't even throwing them at me but today I had a new experience we were in worship service just the beginning of service and everybody was praising worship the choir was singing and something caught my eye right down in the middle at the altar and I reached down the Altar and so help me look what I found that's a silver dollar now I don't know who that belonged to there's one brother I'll let him go nameless so he won't get too popular but it's been known to give silver dollars to kids well I don't know if some kid dropped it or they threw it on purpose but whatever it ended up the Altar and I went to that brother I said this belong to you he said no I may have given that somebody he said if you don't find who it is put it in the offering I said well before I do I'm going to preach with it tonight so in one instance Jesus Took the penny said whose picture's on it but Jesus dealt with another situation of pay and tribute musicians start getting ready don't sing Jesus paid at all either Matthew 17. 24 says and when they were come to Capernaum they that received tribute money came to Peter these were the tax collectors and said doth not your master paid tribute doesn't doesn't Jesus pay taxes and he said yes and when he was come into the house Jesus prevented him or questioned him saying what think is thou Simon what's on your mind Jesus knew what was on his mind but he was Speaking In the Flesh right now he said well think is thou Simon of whom do the kings of the Earth take customer tribute of their own children or of strangers Peter said unto him I'm strangers Jesus said unto him then are the children free he was explaining to Peter that that was inconsistencies in the tax collecting in the natural and thinking In the Flesh and in the law yeah it's inconsistent I know but then Jesus said this notwithstanding there's some things we're trying to draw lines on that we need to use Jesus word say notwithstanding lest we should offend them Jesus could see the big picture it was bigger than declaring his rights about taxes he said notwithstanding lest we should offend them go out of the sea cast a hook take up the fish that first cometh up and when thou has opened his mouth Thou shalt find a piece of money that they didn't have a slant floor but he said go fishing and that taken given to them for me and thee now if anybody goes from church tonight saying the preacher preached two things we don't have to pay our taxes and we need to go fishing I'll know you've missed the message for you see Jesus when he chose to could do a miraculous thing and take care of the need that Peter had but he was illustrating a much greater point that there's some things that we should render in the natural while we have a greater understanding of the spiritual Romans said it this way in Romans 8 and we'll read just a little of this and comment some Romans 8 1 says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit you see he paid the debt of sin in turn we must walk after the spirit the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death notice this for what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh let me pause and say this I'm not teaching or telling us to be law Breakers in the natural by any means but have you noticed no matter what the issue man's idea is still make another law and that'll fix it and the more laws we make the less anything gets fixed why because the law in the flesh is weak you can't make enough rules to make people live right if they don't get Jesus in their heart let me say it this way we don't have a drug problem in our nation we've got a sin problem we don't have a crime problem we got a sin problem you name what we call issues and we're making laws about them what we have is a sin problem if we can get people to stop sinning it would take care of all that mess he said the law was weak make all the rules make all the Constitutions now again if you're thinking In the Flesh now you're thinking oh these are rebellious statements absolutely not I'm not saying we should rebel against civil law but I'm saying there is a higher power that has the answer to every situation for us if we'll get our hearts right and render to God what is there for what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh God sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh here's Jesus coming God sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin condemn sin in the flesh that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit oh God let me walk a new walk let me walk after the spirit for they that are after The Flesh do mind the things of the flesh but they that are after the spirit the things of the spirit for to be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded his life and because the carnal mind is enmity against God for it is not this it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be so the then they that are in the flesh cannot please God oh we could comment much but let the word speak to your heart but ye are not in the flesh but in the spirit if so be that the spirit of God dwell in you now we're getting somewhere I need this the spirit of God dwelling in me now if any man have not the spirit of Christ he is none of his it's not good enough to have a relationship with Christ on the outside you need Christ on the inside and if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin again speaking in spiritual terms that we talked about in the beginning but the spirit is life because of righteousness but if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you let me pause who raised up Jesus from the dead Jesus said destroy this Temple and in three days I will raise it up Jesus raised Jesus from the dead and that means I need to have the same spirit in me I need to have Jesus living in me but if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also Quicken your mortal bodies by his spirit that dwelleth in you therefore brethren we are debtors not to the flesh I don't owe the flesh I owe the spirit I oh and I must render to him what is owed him stand with me it goes on to say for if you live after the flesh if all the carnal things are what we value ye shall die but if ye through the spirit do mortify the Deeds of the body ye shall live speaking in spiritual terms we put to death the desires of natural man in favor of Christ Living in US [Music] for as many as are led by the spirit of God they are the sons of God for you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but you've received the spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba father please it's through spiritual eyes tonight spiritual relationship of Christ Living in us the spirit itself bearth the witness of our spirit that we are and if children than heirs Heirs of God and Joint heirs with Christ if so be that we suffer that we may be also glorified ask yourself the question tonight what will I render to God the simple question is God I give you me I give you me all of my failures all of my shortcomings all of the difficulties God is all of God this is who I am you see God loves you so much that he wants you as you are but he cares so much about you he won't leave you in sin he'll change you it's a simple plan it's it's a step of repenting saying God I'm sorry for my sinning Lord please forgive me for my sin I need to give me to you Lord I want to take your name on I want to be called an heir a child of God a son of the father so I must take on the name by being baptized signifying death and burial repentance of water baptism and then I want to be filled with your spirit the Holy Ghost Resurrection renewed is there anybody in here tonight that would step out and say I want to render to God all of me would you step out and say Lord Take me Take Me As I Am Lord I need your spirit strong living inside me if you've never repented come with the saints come say God I give you me tonight I give you all of me God I will not withhold anything I give you all I want to be an heir I want to be full I bring you my praise I bring you my Thanksgiving I bring you my worship I bring you my Holiness God I bring you everything bring it to Jesus tonight Hallelujah with those who have heard well done proclaiming forever [Music] [Applause] [Music] Jesus Jesus [Music] Jesus king Jesus [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Jesus [Music] right now would you just say under your praise render your sacrifices to him he wants to hear your voice speak it out in Jesus [Music] worthy Lord forever [Music] [Music] thank you Jesus [Music] Jesus Christ in this house hallelujah oh I can never give him enough but I will daily attempt to live the life that would be pleasing in his
