well i'm gonna let you move back to your seats but would you keep worshiping would you keep praising giving honor to everyone that's in this assembly tonight so good to see this wonderful crowd of believers on this last day of the month the month of october it is so great to see you all in the house of the lord let me simply say yes and amen to those who've gone before me telling about the great things that are taking place and i've got to let you in on a secret i mentioned here a while back that i've had my experts and technicians and those here at first apostolic church that are adept at research getting us ready i told you we're going to get a a screen that will uh when we need it we can lower it down over the babs tree for our video production and when we uh are having baptizings and want the baptist to expose it will retract up well by the help of the lord and by the grace of god it is ordered and on the way hallelujah it's going to happen right along with that there's going to be a we're going to replace these light walls here with a video wall that we can uh do all kinds of neat things because i want to get the message out to everybody who will listen i i want to reach this world with every tool and every equipment that we can have because we've got the gospel that this world needs i i couldn't help but but notice in the headlines or rather i wouldn't say headlines but there was an article on it in our local uh media uh the university of tennessee trying to keep up with the rest of the uh athletic departments around the country had installed new led lights this year and they were doing light shows before the game started and someone had commented with an editorial we're losing our field for football [Music] and then so help me you know what they did with their cheering for one of their home games they actually put a decibel meter up on the screen to try to get the crowd to to surpass the loudest decibel meter reading that they've ever had in the stadium well i've got news for you i'm not here to try to show off anything that god has blessed us with but i guarantee you we're going to use everything that god puts at our disposal to win a lost world if we can reach folks if we can reach out and touch some folks in our community we're competing with a world that is uh visually appealing [Music] now this isn't in my notes and i hope i don't hurt anybody's feelings but we are competing for the attention of this world [Music] there was a day that folks read the newspaper now if a blog is more than a paragraph long folks lose interest and they click to something else we've got the opportunity god is equipping us with the opportunity to get the gospel out to this world our goal is still souls and we're going to use everything god will give us and put at our disposal to reach a lost world first apostolic church where you keep helping us when you keep working god's doing some great things around here i promise you he is hallelujah hallelujah well i've referred to it several times already but let me say again pastor whitley mightily blessed us today and me personally with his message and challenged me and i want to thank him for ministering to us i thank all of our pastoral staff and leadership for their faithful work and again i want to say thank thank you they're still anonymous whoever whoever has your secret they're keeping it good i don't know who put that sign up that we love our pastors or who what people did that but whoever was responsible thank you so much i once i heard someone say there's only two kind of secrets there's secrets that aren't worth keeping and there's secrets that are too good to keep so somebody's keeping you secret real good right now but whoever it was thank you so much for those signs and we do love you and we thank you and i i'm thankful to be pastoring the greatest church in pentecost i really mean that it's the greatest church that anyone could ever have a part of and i'm glad to be a part of it i want to call your attention tonight i'll let you just stay in your seats i want to call your attention tonight to the book of second kings the 23rd chapter this sounds a bit familiar bishop used a portion of this passage in his bible class a couple of weeks back and i'd already been studying on this and uh i felt like that was confirmation for me to preach what i feel the lord would have me to bring to us tonight call your attention to second kings the 23rd chapter we'll read at verse 16 and read through verse 20. verse 16 reads and as josiah turned himself he spied the sepulchers that were there in the mount and sent and took the bones out of the sepulchres and burned them upon the altar and polluted it according to the word of the lord which the man of god proclaimed who proclaimed these words then he said what title is that that i see and the men of the city told him it is the sepulcher of the man of god which came from judah and proclaimed these things that thou has done against the altar of bethel and he said let him alone let no man move his bones so they let his bones alone and notice this with the bones of the prophet that came out of samaria [Music] and all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of samaria which the king of israel had made to provoke the lord anger josiah took away and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in bethel and he slew all the priests of the high places that were there upon the altars and burned men's bones upon them and returned to jerusalem tonight i want to speak to you [Music] on this subject a walk among the tombstones what will your epithet say let's pray savior i love you god i thank you for your mighty presence that we've already experienced praise and worship that's gone up lord and your blessings that have come down i thank you for every individual that's in this house i pray that your word would minister mightily to us sink deep into our hearts let us not just hear but let us be doers of the word and change to the good for all you have for us thank you and praise you in jesus name we pray amen i've had the opportunity to visit arlington national cemetery in arlington virginia just across the way from washington d.c on a few occasions many heroes of american history generals presidents warriors victims of tragedies and attacks against our nation are all buried there thousands of stories are all contained in the markers and gravestones found there in addition there are a couple of different things that you will see the markers and gravestones will have one or two line epithets that eulogize the heroes of the victims in addition you'll see thousands of rows of white grave markers lined over the rolling virginia hills marking the graves of the true heroes of our nation who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms but the most visited site and grave there is what's known as the tomb of the unknown soldier inscribed on that monument that is guarded 24 hours a day seven days a week at all times by marching honor guard is an epithet that reads known only to god this very week the country of france along with the united states honored this tomb with celebrations of its 100th anniversary and it relates to all of those who fought so valiantly and died but their earthly remains may have never been formally identified many of us also who like such things have taken that drive through cage cove and stopped at some of the churches and walked through the graveyards there the cemeteries give us much information and just a couple of sentence epidemics and some dates to our local history and culture in fact i even know a brother in our church if you had asked him he can take you over to the knoxville national cemetery and find you the grave of robert nalen he sees that to be important in our culture tombstones usually have an epithet on them that's strictly saying a short text that honors the deceased person and it strictly speaks to the inscription that's on their grave marker or on their tombstone bishop mccool told us a while back he already has his epithet composed and it says be thou faithful unto death how awesome but i want us all to realize tonight the book of hebrews the ninth chapter verse 27 says and is appointed unto men wants to die but after this the judgment if we are all appointed to die we might need to take a walk through the tombstones and see what others epithet says and think about what might be found on our markers if i could dare approach that subject so i started doing a little research of famous people and a few infamous folks to see what was on their markers there's a fella that another generation would know his voice more than the current generation but there's a fellow by the name of mel blanc who was known as the voice or the man of a thousand voices including the voice of bugs bunny and you know what his epithet says it says that's all folks merv griffin the famous talk show and game show producer his grave marker reads i will not be right back after this message one read he loved bacon oh and his wife and kids too another read i made some good deals and i made some bad ones i really went in the hole with this one still another i found said a fellow by the name of odell gil douglas born april 12 1926 died october 10 2002 and then it simply said unto that i told you i was sick then i begin to look at some of the old west markers that i could find one of the old west markers said here lies george johnson hanged by mistake in 1892 he was right we was wrong we strung him up and now he's gone boy i hope not to have a marker like that still another from the old west read here lies lester moore four slugs from a 44 no less and no more robert clay allison 1840-1887 has read he never killed a man that did not need killing and when the saddest yet read here lies good old fred a great big rock fell on his head rest in peace i hope that we can have better epithets than that and as i studied further i could not help but remember a story that brother louis hera told bishop and myself brother louis herrera told us a story of a man his first name was john and his surname was weird and he had to deal with having a last name like weird all his life through school he was known as the weird kid he had to search to get a wife who would take on the name weird and after so long and after living a lifetime dealing with being called john weird he told his wife i've got one request he said when i'm buried and gone on my grave marker i want you to put nothing but the day i was born and the day i died so certainly when he passed away she fulfilled his wishes and she made a grave marker that only had the date he was born and the date he died and yes you guessed it most who visited said ain't that weird brother hera told me that story well let me tell you tonight the passage that i read in your hearing of the happenings of josiah understand josiah was a king who became king at the age of eight years old can you imagine he's barely in first and second grade in our culture and now he's the king but the bible says when he began to reign that he did that which was right in the sight of the lord and walked in all the ways of his of david his father that means of that lineage of david and he turned not aside to the right hand or to the left he took on the responsibility of repairing the house of god if you read over in second kings 22 4 and 5 he said go up to helkiah the high priest that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the lord which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people and let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of work he started hiring workers with the tax that had been paid it said that have the oversight of the house of the lord and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the lord to repres repair the breaches in the house of the lord he received offerings he took a tax and they repaired god's house why did god's house needed repairing for his predecessors had not walked in the ways of god instead the kingdom had become a mess because of generations of leadership that had followed baal and followed molech and served sun gods and moon gods false worship and idolatry in general but when josiah turned 18 that grand age in our culture when you're considered an adult he had already been king for 10 years but now he had no one could tell him anything to do josiah had turned 18. the bible said he started reading law and cleaning up the mess that had been made you see he began to destroy everything in ii kings 23 which was not of the true god and he began obeying prophecy that at the time he really didn't even realize it had been prophesied over him and part of the prophecy that he would fulfill was he took a walk in the graveyard and part of the mission he had there were false priests and false prophets who had been buried the prophets of baal the prophets of molech the idolaters their bodies had been buried and all they had i can imagine markers that told who they were and and gave them great uh uh honor and he said no these were false prophets these were false god he said boys let's dig them up we're going to dig up some bones and they started digging up he said go burn those bones on the altars get rid of all these false prophets bones i don't even want them to have honor in their death but as he was visiting the cemetery he saw a marker that simply said this was the marker of the man of god that came from judah there was no name i could at first read and think well maybe this is the tomb of the unknown prophet i only knew where he came from and that was it but then as i studied more i went back to first kings the 13th chapter and i find out who this prophet was for first kings 13 said and behold there came a man of god out of judah by the word of the lord unto bethel and jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense and he cried against the altar in the word of the lord and said o altar o altar thus saith the lord behold a child shall be born into the house of david josiah by name josiah is finding and is already fulfilling the prophecy of a dead prophet that died a long time ago and upon thee shall be the offers the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee and the men's bones shall be burnt upon thee and he gave a sign that same day saying this is the sign which the lord has spoken behold the altar shall be rent and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out you see josiah is finding out that he is now fulfilling prophecy and furthermore this same prophet history recorded this prophet this man of god that had come out of judah when he made this prophecy the king tried to lay hands on him and tried to close his mouth say jeroboam tried to say we can't have this kind of prophecy and when jeroboam reached his hand toward the prophet to lay hold on him the bible says his hand dried up and withered and he could not pull it in against to him and the altar also was rent and the ashes poured out from the altar according to the sign which the man of god had given him by the word of the lord and the king answered and said unto the man of god entreat me now the face of the lord thy god and pray for me that my hand may be restored again and the man of god besought the lord and the king's hand was restored unto him again and became as it was before man you're talking about a powerful man of god you're talking about a powerful individual think of such a miracle taking place i think he got the king's attention so you know what the king said the king said man i need a guy like this on my side he said i want you to come home with me i want to feed you at the king's table you've got me convinced you you've got got me on your side whatever you say that's what i'm going to do and the man of god said unto the king if thou would give me half an house i will not go with thee neither will i eat bread nor drink water in this place for so was it charged me by the word of the lord saying eat no bread nor drink no water and to turn again by the same way that thou came us so he went another way and returned not by the way that he came to bethel now again please stay with me as i set a foundation because we're finding out who that man of god that josiah would not disturb his grave really is and if this is where this prophet's story ended it would truly be a victorious testimony to a man of god obeying what god had said but you see something else took place for in the same country they're dwelt the bible says in verse 11 of first kings 13 now an old prophet in bethel and the sons came and told him of the works that the man of god had done that day in bethel and the words which he had spoken to the king and they told him also to their father and the father said what way went he this old prophet notice he was an old prophet but the bible does not refer to him as a prophet of god what that means is there can be prophets that are not prophets of god could i pause and say always be careful who and what you allow to speak into your life claiming to be the voice of the lord because there are false prophets there are lying prophets and there are those with personal agendas that they'll tell you that god said to do this and god wants you to to do that when god didn't really say i'll paraphrase part and read part for this old prophet had sons who were witnesses to the miracle that god had done in this young prophet and he stood unashamed before the king and he said i need to know which way he went and the son said well he went this direction and he said man saddle me a beast i need to go find that young prophet this old prophet started seeking out this young prophet and he rode and he went after the bible says in verse 14 and he went after the man of god i know you're listening but the enemy will seek after you to take you in the wrong direction it does not matter how many good things you've accomplished it doesn't matter if god has used you in the past this young prophet had been used of god mightily to condemn the wrong that was taking place when he was confronted by a wicked king he had the miracle work in power but when he obeyed god and went in a different direction there was still somebody coming after him that wanted to change and would change him forever 4 14 said and he went after the man of god and found him sitting under an oak tree and he said unto him art thou the man of god that came from judah and he said i am then said he unto him come home with me and eat bread and he said i may not return with thee nor go with thee neither will i eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place for it was said to me by the word of the lord doubt shall not eat no bread nor drink water there nor turn again to go by the way thou came and somebody hear me tonight if god's put you on a path and you know god has spoken to you god's not gonna send somebody with a different message to change your direction if he's called you and he's chosen you and he's opened doors for you somebody better hear this preacher because just when you start doing what god has told you to do and just when you start performing what god has asked you to do the enemy can make something look so spiritual to come and change your path and change your direction he told this old prophet said i can't go home with you i already made god a promise i wasn't going to eat a drink till i did and fulfilled them and notice what happened and he said unto him the old prophet said to him i'm a prophet also as thou art no he wasn't he was a prophet but he was a false prophet and he said an angel spoke unto me by the word of the lord listen folks be careful god doesn't need a lot of proxies to get in touch with you he knows how to talk to you personally god does not need some angel seeing person to come and give you some special message if you want to know what god has for you get on your knees and talk to him for yourself he'll give you direction he'll give you guidance and when he reveals to you what you're supposed to do keep doing it [Applause] i'm a prophet also as you are the angel spoke unto me saying bring him back with thee unto thy house that he may eat bread and drink water but notice what it says but he lied unto him the old prophet had a personal agenda he wanted to attach himself to a truth-preaching truth-performing prophet let me tell you there will be a lot of things come down the pike that will want to attach itself to the church because of the success of blessed people now please this is not spiritually deep you don't have to put on your spiritual galoshers but let me tell you there will be some things that will come down the pike that'll try to attach itself to the church and we'll try to give new direction we've had folks tell us in the past you know first apostolic church if y'all wouldn't just harp on that jesus name message so much if you would become a little more mainstream like other denominations if you just do this and just do that listen we've got a mission to accomplish we've got souls to win in this kingdom and we've got to preach the apostolic jesus name message we can't change our message we can't change our direction god has put us on a path and we will not waver from that path so the young prophet in weakness thinking that a lying prophet had talked to an angel and heard from the lord the bible says that he went back with him did eat in his house and drank water and it came to pass as they sat at the table that the word of the lord came into the prophet that brought him back for the first time the lion prophet really heard from god and he cried into the man of god that came from judah saying thus saith the lord for as much as thou has disobeyed the mouth of the lord and has not kept the commandment which the lord thy god commanded thee but came us back and has eaten bread and drunk water in that place of which the lord did say to thee eat no bread and drink no water thy carcass shall not come into the sepulchre of thy fathers you're not even going to be buried in your own family cemetery and then let me narrate rather than read you can read in first kings 13 for yourself so he began his journey he thought he was on the right path but the bible says there was a lion in the way and the lion slew the young prophet and his carcass was laid out word came to the false prophet that the young prophet had been slain he told his helpers his family and sons he said go get his body and bury him in my sepulchre this once powerful young prophet is now being laid to rest without his name being known in the tomb of a false prophet this is why when we read from our original text it stated that this sepulcher was the man of god which came out of judah and when josiah said leave it alone it said so they let his bones alone with the bones of the prophet that came out of samaria eventually the old prophet would die and both of their bodies would be laid together in this tomb so preacher you sound like you're preaching a pretty ominous message and i thought we were going to talk about epitaphs well i am 4. had it been us writing their epithets what would it said here lies a man of god his prophecy was right but he did what was wrong or maybe it would have been a dual headstone since they were together maybe it would have one of them would said i'm stupid and the other one said i'm with stupid who knows somebody made a mistake when they listened to the words of a false prophet jehoiakim josiah's son it would be said of him he did so terrible before god the lord prophesied through the voices in his life said that he shall be buried with the burial of an ass the burial of a beast said don't even don't even put a a marker up for him cast out unburied buried without a funeral or any solomonies no lamentations for him this shouldn't be the way a king would die but god had bid it to be so so preacher what would you tell me today you can draw your own conclusions about their tombstones but if we're going to use our imagination let me ask you about a couple others because i don't want to be known as a prophet that did some good things a preacher that did some good things but in my latter years i had to go to a false preacher and a false prophet's tomb i don't want to change the message and change the direction of what god has called but let me ask you this have you ever wondered what elisha's tombstone might look like what about elijah's tombstone elijah i got news for you try to find his tombstone can't find one why because he was translated but then elisha who had asked for a double portion when he died something amazing happened again i'll paraphrase but you can read about it for yourself the bible says when elisha died they buried him and just about the time they buried him i mean funeral service was just over everybody was heading away there was an attack by the moabites that invaded the land and there was another man that was about to be buried and they didn't have time to bear him so you know what they did they threw his body in on top of elisha's bones and you know what happened the bible says he was resurrected read it for yourself second kings 13 and elisha died and they buried him in the bands of the moabites invaded the land at the coming into the year and it came to pass as they were burying a man they behold they spied abandoned men and they cast the man into the sepulchre of elisha and when the man was let down and touch the bones of elijah he revived and stood up on his feet can you imagine the moabites are attacking they got in a hurry and they threw this guy's body in on top of elijah they took off running trying to get away from the moabites and somebody passed them i can imagine too said hey who was that didn't we just put him in a grave if i'm gonna have an epithet on my my tombstone maybe it would say here lies elisha there's still power in these bones hear me the message we're preaching as long as god tarries whether i'm a living or i'm dead i want there to be power in the message that we're preaching it's not about us but the message that we preach first apostolic church it's got to stay strong it's got to stay vibrant it's not about any of us these bones have got to stay oh hallelujah [Applause] well i'll move quickly y'all remember joseph when joseph did all that he did when it came time for joseph to die in egypt joseph had a lot of equity in egypt it would have been easy for joseph to gotten attached to egypt but joseph knew in the beginning there would be hundreds of years before deliverance would come to god's people but joseph left this message he said i know i'm going to die but when god's people leave egypt he said don't leave my bones don't bury my bones in egypt i'm going to the promised land genesis 50 25 said and joseph took an oath of the children of israel said god will surely visit you now understand this is over 100 years of captivity was in on the beginning as god's people migrated to egypt he would never see in the human eye the deliverance of god's people but he already had insight and joseph took an oath of the children of israel saying god will surely visit you and ye shall carry up my bones from hence so joseph died being 110 years old and they embalmed him and he was put in a coffin in egypt but some 300 plus years later moses took the bones of joseph you can read this in exodus 13 19 and moses took the bones of joseph with him for he had straightly sworn the children of israel saying god will surely visit you and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you i don't know what all happened but in joshua 24 32 it says in the bones of joseph which the children of israel brought up out of egypt buried day and chicken and a parcel of ground which jacob bought of the sons of hamor the father of shikham for a hundred pieces of silver and it became the inheritance of the children of joseph i can imagine there was a tombstone and chicken that said here lies joseph my bones better not be in egypt let me tell you we've been delivered from egypt we've been delivered from sin we've been brought out and bought out don't take me back to egypt don't take me back to sin i've been delivered i don't want my past to be brought up instead i want to be in the promised land that god has for me i want to be where god has placed me first apostolic church we must not go back to egypt well i hasten praise team get ready let me give you a few more facts and figures and nauvoo illinois illinois joseph smith is buried at the smith family cemetery the father of mormonism ron l hubbard the founder of scientology upon his death was cremated and his ashes were scattered in the pacific ocean there's a shrine near baja acre israel for a most holy place for the founder of the baja faith it's near a spot where he died according to buddhism buddha's body was cremated and the relics were placed in monuments some are which are believed to have survived until this day for example there is a place called a temple of the tooth in sri lanka that supposedly the right tooth of buddha is kept to the present mary baker eddie is buried at mount asbury cemetery in cambridge massachusetts founder of christian science the grave of confucius is found in shendong province china the grave is located in a large cemetery where more than a hundred thousand of his descendants are also buried muhammad is buried in the mosque of the prophets in medina in saudi arabia all of these monuments and more morals have one thing in common here lies the remains or at least parts of them but all of these folks are still dead well brother mccool i don't even believe in god i'm an atheist well maybe your gravestone will say all dressed up and no place to go but there's one more tomb i want to visit tonight because matthew 28 says in the end of the sabbath as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week came mary magdalene and the other mary to see the sepulcher and behold there was a great earthquake for the angel of the lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it and his countenance was like light and his raiment white as snow and for fear of the him the keepers did shake and became his dead men and the angel answered and said unto the women fear you not for i know that you seek jesus which was crucified he is not here come and see where the lord lay he used to be here but he's gone his tooth's not here his remains are not here his ashes are not here he's not here he's risen from the dead stand with me you see there's an empty tomb in jerusalem somebody in this house may need to rewrite the epithet that you had planned for your tombstone because you see satan's already been writing it [Music] i found mine here's the one that satan had prepared to go on my tombstone know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of god but be not deceived neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor effeminate or abusers of themselves mankind nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of god here lies mark mccool all the above [Music] and before you get to feeling too holy he went on to saying such were some of you [Music] but he didn't stop there he said but ye are washed ye are sanctified ye are justified in the name of the lord jesus by the spirit of our god my new stone now says here lies mark mccool washed sanctified justified in the name of the lord jesus another words i'm just like jesus that's what i want my stone to say i would somebody hear me tonight i've been changed i've been made new they sing that song sometimes about that valley of dry bones they sing it sometimes and they say this is the sound of the dry bones rattling i like that it don't matter what you've been i'm here to tell somebody tonight if you'll die out to the world you can write a new epitaph you can have a new tomb marker because it's not permanent because as sure as he died and rose again i have that guarantee romans said it this way in romans 6 1 what what shall we say then shall we continue in sin that grace may abound god forbid how shall we that are dead dead living sin any longer therein know ye not that so many of us that were baptized into jesus christ were baptized into his death i went down in water in jesus name so when i come up i'm a new creature i've got a new epithet i've got a new direction [Music] therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death that like as christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the father even so we should walk in newness of life for if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death if you've been baptized in jesus name we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection he's not here he's risen if i'm going to be in the likeness of his death his burial and his resurrection that old sin man has to be put down and a new creature comes walking around he said for he that is dead is freed from sin hallelujah i wish somebody lift their hands and love the lord right now all over this house would you just love him just a minute savior i praise you savior i praise you god if there's somebody in this house under the sound of my voice that's needing a fresh start lord the enemy's been trying to write their destruction i'm claiming it in jesus name i've got a new epithet i'm risen i've been sanctified i've been cleansed the way you do that is find an altar of repentance and say lord i'm sorry for my sin and i'm sorry i've done wrong and then you take his name on in baptism whatever you need in your life if you want to have him write the epitaph of your life would you step out right now would you come around this altar would you love jesus right now let him touch you sing for me sing for [Music] just that's the man who [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] this is is [Music] [Music] [Applause] oh [Applause] blue [Music] come on this is [Music] just ask the man [Applause] oh this is [Music] hallelujah [Music] i encourage you to go from this place encouraged because he lives we live because he proved it we have that promise our epithet is not the end it's just the beginning of a resurrected life hallelujah first apostolic church i love you thank you for an awesome and wonderful weekend don't forget wednesday night bible study 7 30. also remind everyone that's interested in going to national youth convention next sunday
