to take us to the word of the lord this morning i'd call your attention to the book of matthew the 13th chapter and i'll give you just a moment to find that in your bible or the device you might be using and i do want to again say a special honor to all of our pastoral staff our elders staff our ministers our leadership and the saints of first apostolic church for your continued support and faithful work here at first apostolic church so many things going on and i do honor you for your faithfulness matthew 13. i'm going to read just a couple of three verses uh for our text matthew 13 beginning with verse 24 we read another parable put he forth unto them saying this is jesus speaking the kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field but while men slept please notice it said a man sowed but it said men plural slept but while men slept his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way but when the blade was sprung up and brought forth fruit then appeared the tares also for a few moments this morning i would make this statement for our title i'm not just watching i'm a watchman i'm not just watching i'm a watchman let's pray savior i love you god i'm grateful for your word i thank you for this wonderful house full of believers who have joined us today as we study and feast at your table and we let your word minister to our hearts god i pray that we would act upon all your word tells us to do that we will receive joyfully and lord we would be rewarded for the faithfulness to your word for all this we're grateful and thankful in jesus name we pray amen and amen in the united states military protocol for a century there are 11 general orders i will not comment extensively on all of them but i want to call a few to your attention of that 11. the first general order for a century in the united states military is to take charge of this post and all government property in view in other words keep an eye on what you've been assigned to watch number two to walk my post in a military manner keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place with insight or hearing using my senses to be aware to be alert number three to report all violations of orders i'm instructed to enforce number four to repeat all calls from posts more distant from the guard house than my own number five to quit my post only when properly relieved i'm not a quitter i don't bail when there's trouble number six to receive obey and pass on to the sentry who relieves me all orders from the commanding officer the command duty officer the office of the desk and officers and petty officers of the watch number seven to talk to no one except in the line of duty i don't get distracted number eight to give the alarm in case of fire or disorder number nine to call the officer of the deck in case any not covered by instruction number ten to salute all officers and colors and standards not cased and number 11 to be especially watchful at night and during the time for challenging to challenge all persons on or near my post and to allow no one to pass without proper authority the 11 general orders of a century or a watchman our text told by parable the story of a man singular who sowed a field a good field and while much can be taken from it it is implied that one man sowed but there were men whose responsibility was to watch the field as it would grow it was a singular desire for a crop but it was a multiplying of authority to watch the field for it said a man sowed but while men slept someone went to sleep on their watch someone didn't do what they were supposed to do to watch the field i remember hearing an old radio commentator who's now deceased paul harvey tell a story many years ago paul harvey tells of a young man a private who was assigned to work in the guard house at a base and his sergeant had given him his general orders for a century and he was assigned the night duty it was so cold outside and the guard house had just a little heater in it to keep you warm but that became a haven of warmth he did his rounds and he went into the guard house and as nothing happened around him and boredom overtook him the drudgery of the night watch set in he got warm and he started nodding just a bit and the more he fought and blinked his eyes and shook his head the worse it got some of you is about to go to sleep now finally he did the unthinkable his head drooped and he went to sleep he didn't know how long he'd been asleep but suddenly he was awakened by pounding on the door and the sergeant was saying son wake up you are in trouble now you are in big trouble now and the sergeant threw the door open and the coal rushed in the young man realizing what he had done in horror what do i do now suddenly raised his head and said in jesus name i pray amen the bewildered sergeant walked back off into the darkness knowing that he'd figured out a way to get around what had happened let me tell you sometimes we act like we're praying when we've really been asleep don't go to sleep on the watch that god has given us and act like you've been spiritual all that time stay awake we're not just watching we are watchmen god has given us an assignment you see back in 1956 when god moved upon our bishop with a call to this field to plant a church in knoxville if you will he and sister mccool came to this city and they planted a church oh it was hard times i've heard all the stories i've seen the pictures been in a few of them of the infancy when the field was being planted but you see first apostolic church apostolic kitty academy apostolic christian school saints of disassembly no matter the task that you do in this work please remember we are watchmen set on the wall to watch against the enemy there's a singular call to this city but there's a multiplicity of watchmen we have a responsibility not to go to sleep on duty whatever you do if you're at the sound board or if you're a greeter at the front door if you're a sunday school teacher or you're vacuuming the floor stay awake do what god's called you to do the enemy will slip in anywhere he can to so tares you see there was a singular call but now some 64 years later we are those who have been assigned to watch the field because we're looking for a harvest now understand the sowing time is a difficult time but sowing time is not usually when anybody goes to sleep because there's a lot of of hard work and activity going on the plans the expectations the vision of the future and a fruitful harvest is only in the mind of the sower in the beginning but you see there's a time of watching during the growing season that requires vigilance patience and endurance to resist not going to sleep you know there's a reason some people say about certain boring activities man that's about as exciting as watching grass grow it's because the growing season doesn't always seem to have a lot of activity going on yes the planting season was hard work if any of you have ever experienced that spring time of putting a new yard in or growing a new patch of grass there's a lot of hard work you till the ground you you you sow the seed you you stroll the straw and you put some water on it and while that's hard work and preparation you usually don't go to sleep during that but if somebody assigns you just watch it grow suddenly that would be a tougher task yeah you might check on it every once in a while when it comes to mine you might say well i wonder if there's anything coming up through that straw but if you've been assigned to be a constant vigil for you see when the crop was put forth there was an enemy that wanted to destroy the crop you see being a watcher means fighting boredom fighting fatigue that comes with everyday rigors of maintaining a field we don't usually go to sleep in a holy ghost service when new baby saints are coming in and the holy ghost is taking over and things are being planted where the boredom sometimes comes in is the everyday maintenance of trying to win a soul and help them learn more about it you know checking on folks and looking in on folks and asking are you all right you see that's what we do greeting somebody at the door and welcoming them to the church you see too many get involved in the church they don't want to be watched when they just want to be watchers there is a difference they want to be remember there is a difference in being a watchman and a spectator let me give you some examples here's what spectators do spectators watch for entertainment value they like to express their likes and dislikes they'll either clap their hands or boo spectators love to give their opinions what because all they're doing is watching they're wanting to be entertained i didn't come to first apostolic church to be a spectator i didn't come to be entertained i didn't come to give my likes and my dislikes let there be a lull in the action and they don't mind leaving early they are likely to fall asleep if they're not always engaged and entertained well i don't like this they only invest as much of the cost of admission will allow and if there's a time of loss they'll leave early you ever seen spectators at a basketball game or a football game when their team's losing three minutes still on the clock but they're behind you'll see some they're getting up i'm gonna beat the traffic those are spectators they haven't really invested any more than the price of admission oh but give me some watchers who take their responsibilities serious no matter the situation there may not be a holy ghost meeting going on but they're going to do what god called them to do just the same they're going to stay vigilant they're going to keep sounding alarm against sin they're going to keep leading and watching they will not leave their post unless they're relieved and they salute and respect the authority of the word of god they respect the colors the banners of holiness they respect the standards if you will they receive pass on and obey the commandments given them by the lord they give an alarm when peril is near they also tell the right people that means they've got a prayer life they talk to god you see jesus had to deal with this with his followers jesus in matthew 26 40 was trying to keep his disciples watching notice matthew 26 40 said and he cometh unto the disciples findeth them asleep and he said unto peter what could ye not watch with me for one hour notice he didn't say could you not pray with me for an hour his first statement he said couldn't you watch couldn't you even just stay awake he wasn't even asking for an eloquent prayer man this was the greatest peril of jesus flesh he was about to be betrayed he was about to suffer all the indignities that led up to the crucifixion he had prophesied it he told him it would be so and he said couldn't you just watch with me for an hour then he said watch and pray you know what that lets me know sometimes you can pray with your eyes open in fact i'd advise that if you pray going to work in your car please keep your eyes open while you're praying but sometimes you might ought to turn sports talk off you might ought to turn the headline news off and just you and the lord spend a little quality time get off the phone gossiping about something else and say god you and me going to drive little i'm going to watch the road but i'm going to talk to you a while sometimes we need to watch and pray a little more he said watch and pray that you enter not into temptation the spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak he went away the second time and prayed saying o my father if this cup may not pass for me except i drink it thy will be done jesus was agonizing in his flesh he knew what was coming he knew all the suffering the indignities that he would suffer and he just wanted some support he needed some watchers but scripture says and he came and found them asleep again for their eyes were heavy and he left him and went away and prayed the third time saying the same words then cometh he to his disciples and said unto them sleep on you know i think sometimes the lord calls us and calls us and calls us and we're so heavy eyed he finally said just sleep on i guess you'll wake up eventually take your rest behold the hour is at hand that the son of man has betrayed into the hands of the sinners good watchers develop the burden of the sower and are not just hirelings apparently in our original text those who were assigned to watch the field had really not got under the burden of the sower to have a well-kept guarded field they didn't take their task seriously they went to sleep and the bible says that while they were sleeping the enemy sowed tares tares defined as a wheat a weed of fields where grain is grown a plant that is not valued where it is growing and is usually of rank growth now i'm not sure what they mean by rank growth but have you noticed how if you plant something that you're wanting for beauty or for substance how much you have to take care of it but how ornery weeds don't need any care at all they'll just spring up i have to pray for sister jamie sometime when she pulls in the parking lot i mean the place will have just been weeded and taken care of and there's there's stuff that will grow through the concrete if you're not careful you see tears even growing and cultivated ground can damage the crop first apostolic church our community is the field that god has given us to sow in and to watch and to be observers can you ask yourself today can you say in your spirit i'm not just watching i'm a watchman i'm looking over whatever god called me to do we have so many faithful watchmen at this assembly i can't help but say honor to some and i can't call all names but countless times i've seen brother jimmy debusk faithfully watching over being a camera operator at first apostolic church folks don't always get up and law the success of a camp meeting man we had an awesome camp meeting wasn't that great camera operating but you know what got a faithful watchman that's looked over it more years than he'd even want me to tell and i can name that about so many folks technicians greeters sunday school workers that's watched over the field of little two-year-olds and little three-year-olds workers who've watched over managing our kitchen workers who have watched over care for this building watchmen just watching their part of the field am i a watchman you see scripture addresses the sleepers in proverbs 6 9 it says how long will thou sleep oh sluggard buddy that's that's pretty rough language i i preached here just a few weeks ago about uh a dumb ox and a stork and a turtle and how the the preacher analogized said you're not as smart as them uh then when you backslide now if you go to sleep on the job he's calling you a sluggard he said oh sluggard when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep i i didn't really know what a sluggard was i looked it up but i know what a slug is y'all know what slugs are that's a slang term for snail i mean slugs move slow i mean i'm sure y'all all heard it but just in case everybody remembers what the snail said when he got on the back of the turtle he said we that's fast he said wake up you sluggard when will thou arise of thy sleep yet a little sleep a little slumber a little folding of the hands so shall thy poverty come as one that travaileth and they shall want as an armed man sluggard is not a complimentary turn i don't want the word of the lord referring to me i don't want that to be my call to be a slug isaiah addressed the outcasts of israel in isaiah 56 10. it said his watchmen are blind and they are all ignorant buddy that's rough bunch if that's who's watching your you've got blind watchmen who are ignorant he said they are all dumb dogs that cannot bark sleeping lying down loving to slumber yay they are greedy dogs which can never have enough and they are shepherds that cannot understand it's bad when the sheep get lost but it's far worse when the shepherd can't find his way they all look to their own way it's about me it's the egocentricity of my personality come and entertain me at the church make me comfortable at the church no i want to be a watchman that's serving that's doing something for god whatever it is you may be coaching a kid's basketball team i can itemize on and on there's so many fields you can watch and then it said come say they i will fetch wine we will fill ourselves with strong drink and tomorrow shall be as this day and much more abundant there'll never be any change everything i'm satisfied with the status quo let's just party up every day ah no need to worry about the enemy attacking you see when you're a watchman there are some factors that can cause you to go to sleep let me tell you darkness can surely put one to sleep anybody that's got any infants around that you want to take a nap first thing you do you try to get them into a dimly lit or dark room first john 2 8 says again a new commandment i write unto you which thing is true in him and in you because the darkness is past and the true light now shineth he that saith he is in the light and hateth his brother is in darkness even now hear me in this house if you've got hatred in your heart the enemy's trying to put you to sleep he's trying to turn your lights out if you've got hate you don't know what they did to me don't matter get hatred out of your heart you're going to walk in darkness [Applause] darkness will put you to sleep spiritually he that saith he is in the light and hateth his brother is in darkness even until now he that loveth his brother abideth in the light and there's none occasion of stumbling when you walk around in darkness you'll stumble over things you would have never thought you could stumble over minor things had the light of the holy ghost been shining in your life that would have never been a temptation to you sir but you had hatred in your heart the lights went out and you'll stumble up over some of the most minor things and destroy yourself spiritually and you'll go to sleep most sins against one's own flesh sins of adultery sins of promiscuity many times start out because somebody had something in their heart against someone else and their eyes got blinded they didn't have the light of the holy ghost and suddenly walking in darkness they stumble over things that they never thought they would stumble over he that hateth his brother is in darkness and walketh in darkness and knoweth not whether he goeth because the darkness hath blinded his eyes hatred will turn your lights out and put you to sleep spiritually first thessalonians 5 4 said but ye brethren are not in darkness i'm glad to be in the light that the day should overtake you as a thief you are all the children of light and the children of the day we are not of the night nor of darkness therefore let us not sleep as do others but let us watch and be sober but not only will darkness put you to sleep you know what else will put you to sleep inactivity that means being still too long doing nothing for too long lamentations one one gave this descriptive couple of paragraphs about a city that's been sitting still it says how does the city sit solitary that was full of people has she become a as a widow she that was great among the nations and princes among the provinces how she become tributary she weepeth soar in the night and her tears are on her cheeks among all her lovers she has none to comfort her all her friends have dealt treacherously with her they are become her enemies if we decide we've gone as far as we're going first abstract church this is as far as it goes now hear me if i decide to stand pat be satisfied with the status quo confuse progress with compromise so i refuse to progress i'll go to sleep and this place will become a ghost town hear me as we progress we will not compromise holiness we will not compromise the apostles doctrine but we may do a few things sometimes we may try a couple things some things may work some things may not you know what we're going to keep trying we're going to stay interested that don't mean that we're trying to change just to change but i'm going to tell you we're going to progress we're going to carry the gospel we're going to look for every avenue look social media is here to stay we can curse it we can stick our tongue out at it but it's here to stay why not take the apostolic jesus name message to everybody that will hear if they click on fac i want it to be so excited they say man if it's that good on my phone i got to go there and be there in person look if you got to comment on something go to fac and say wow what a service you ought to come and be with us don't you tr i need to quit yelling let me be more pastoral [Applause] don't you be on there trying to give your evaluations of what's good and what's bad you're not an observer you're not a spectator you're a watchman we've got a field we're trying to look out for we don't want tears coming up in our field you see lamentations 1 3 said judah is gone into captivity because of affliction and because of great servitude she dwelleth among the heathen she findeth no rest all of her persecutors overtook her between the straits now please understand understanding scriptural comparisons and scriptural analogies and types and shadow judah meant now will i praise the lord that's what the name judah meant but as you hit zoom ahead in time scripture said judah has gone into captivity when our praise gets quiet when it gets dark when we get in a tentative and sit still and our praise gets quiet the enemy is lulling us to sleep we cannot let our praise get quite get quiet i'm not talking about volume now i'm talking about giving the praise the calves of your lip the bible says that's the sacrifices of your lips when you can't praise anymore it's a praise has gone into captivity it's become a servant she dwelleth among the heathen heaven help us when the world and its music gives more effort than the church and its music heaven help us when the world knows how to worship better their gods then we know how to worship in the church we are the people of the name we are judah now now now will i praise the lord now now now will i praise the lord now now now will i praise somebody's getting it now now now will i praise the lord i'll clap my hands i'll stomp my feet i'll dance a little bit if i now now will i praise the lord that some of us could go to a tractor pull and put earplugs in our ears and clap and we can't give god a golf clap in church we'll sit on our dead center let me tell you now will i praise the lord i'm not going to be ashamed to step in the house of the lord and lift up my hands and give glory praise and honor i'm not going to be quiet i'm not going to shut my mouth jesus gave him one more shot when we go back in matthew 26 he finally said rise he said get up let us be going behold he is at hand that death betray me he said judas is awake what's your problem the betrayer is awake what's your problem you see watchers keep the burden of the sower we are watching everybody in the house say i'm a watchman say i'm a watchman two watchmen have the same concerns for the crop as the sower they're not looking for a place to go to sleep on the job they know how to endure drudgery of the day-to-day task of watching they have the big picture in focus the big picture is the harvest no matter the task we are given we keep watching stand with me praise team musicians start making your way up be cautious of anything you doing for do for god ever becoming a job rather than a ministry let me say that again some didn't hear me don't get distracted now be cautious of what you do for god that it never become a job rather than a ministry matters not if you have a paid position or you're a volunteer what you do for god should be a ministry of watching not just a job that's looking for a paycheck or some reward of fame and notoriety jesus said in john 10 he differentiated between a hireling and a shepherd and a shepherd is a watcher of the sheep he said but he that is a hireling and not the shepherd who's owned the sheep or not see the wolf coming and leave at the sheep and flavon when there's peril the hireling has no burden for the flock has no burden for the big picture the hireling just says i gotta look out for myself feet don't fail me now i'm out of here and the wolf catcheth them and scattered the sheep the harlem fleet because he's a hireling careth not for the sheep you see my spirituality should not be based on notoriety it should be based on i've got a big picture of the call of the sower bishop mccool came here in 1957 after the call in 56 we must keep that common desire to minister to the city of knoxville in our community i can't be spiritual only to the point of being used and not have convictions and the burden of the sower if i follow holiness standards only to participate have not yet developed the spirit of the sower i have a spirit of a hireling if i constantly feel i have some new revelation new doctrine some fresh dogma i don't share the burden of the sower [Music] in our original text [Music] the men who'd gone to sleep finally did wake up and it was amazing to me to revisit this passage of reading again for it said when they woke up and they saw the tares the servants of the household came and said to the sower they went back to the original burden and the first thing they did when they saw the tares coming up they started pointing fingers at the sower they said sir verse 27 of matthew 13. sir did not thou sow good seed in thy field from whence then hath it's ter it tears they never took into account the other ones have been sleeping they look to blame somebody i get worried about folks that's always wanting to blame something on somebody else [Music] you must have sowed inferior seed but notice the sower even then didn't counter offer so you bunch of sleeping dead heads you're the problem he said no there's no time to rebuke he said the enemy did this he said i didn't do it said the enemy did it sometimes even when i feel like i deserve a rebuke i want to thank the lord that he keeps me reminded our enemy is the enemy we're not to fight among each other we're not to blame one another but we're to say devil we're still in this together i might have been sleeping for a while but i i'm not going to blame somebody else i'm going to say the enemy is who we've got to aim this at we've got to direct all of our attention to fighting what the enemy has done but you see even in the story the parable if you will the servants proposed this then the servant said basically let's just tear this crop up [Music] we're going to go in there and we're going to start pulling up tears because you got to understand this is still in the growing time [Music] but the sower with the original burden to sow realized that if you try to pull up the tears and separate the tears from the wheat during the sowing season you're going to pull up some wheat too [Music] i've seen folks seem like they've been asleep for 15 years in the church and all of a sudden they wake up and then the first thing they do pastor i need to send you a text you know what those young folks are doing yeah they're doing what you used to do about 20 years ago when we were patient with you i'm not covering sin i'm not condoning wrong but sometimes we got to be patient with some little ones and some young ones and realize we went through the same thing had somebody come along and pulled everything up we wouldn't be here today none of us have angel dust on our shoulders it may be dandruff but you're not having got wings left yet [Music] they said we ought to just pull up all these stairs let's just tear them up no notice what the sower he said nay that means huh and no he loved the crop too much he cared too much verse 29 but he said nay lest while ye gather up the tares you root up also the wheat with them let both grow together until the harvest and in the time of harvest i will say to the reapers gather ye together first the tares bind them in bundles to burn them but gather the wheat into my barn it's not time to pull up it's time to wake up i said it's not time to pull up it's time to wake up i want to be a watchman in the kingdom of god he said watch therefore for you know not whatever your lord cometh jesus is really coming back church this is no fairy tale this is no made up story jesus is coming back watch therefore matthew 24 42 for you know not what hour your lord hath come but know this if the good man of the house had known in the watch the thief would come he would have watched and would not have suffered his house to be broken up therefore be ye also ready for in at such an hour as you think not the son of man cometh i want to call every believer in this house today to reaffirm and re-establish that i am a watchman god i want you to open my eyes i want you to realign my thoughts lord no matter what things i go through in the task that i have i'm gonna stay awake lord it's not about me it's not about my personal desires it's not about my personal edification but oh god i want to be a soul winner let me be a watcher on the wall let me stand as you'd have me to do [Music] if you want to be a watchman going to open the altar for everybody that's a believer and everybody that wants to be a watchman to step out and pray a prayer of god let me be a watchman today would you step out corinthians said watch it stand fast in faith quit you like me and be strong let all your things be done with charity which is love if you let the love of god come into you you can be a watchman in his kingdom would you lead us in praise and worship god make us [Music] us to the heart of jesus [Music] [Applause] we want more decrees [Music] it's all about you it's not about me is [Music] is it's all about you lift your hands and love jesus savior i praise you savior i thank you for your call lord let me be more like you savior let me have your heart lord we love our community we love the saints around us lord we love the sinners around us god let us have a fresh desire to be watchers to speak up to sound the alarm to witness lord to minister as you would have us to god let us be mighty in your ways and have your heart and
