We greet you this Sunday morning in that mighty name of Jesus. I join with all the voices that have been before me saying welcome to each and every one of you. If I do not call your name, please know that you are so welcome and we're so honored to have you worshiping with us just the same today. I greet all of those who are joining us on our multimedia platforms that God has afforded us the privilege of carrying the gospel. Thank you for joining us and I encourage you to be here in service with us at First Apostolic Church of Knoxville just as soon as you possibly can. I give honor to all of our leaders, to our bishop, to our pastoral staff. Thank you for your guidance, your direction, and your continued faithfulness ministering here at First Apostolic Church. And I do take just a moment to say one more time a special thank you to all the saints of this assembly for your sacrifices uh that afford us the opportunity to be here to minister and to reach our community. when I was quite young. Uh I don't remember this happening so I just have to depend on my parents' memory but I was about four years old if I remember the way they told the story that I testified one time and I made this statement. I want to thank the Lord for all the guests that are here, but I also want to thank the Lord for all the home folks that are here because if the home folks weren't here, there wouldn't be anybody here. Well, um I don't deny it, but I can't recall it. Okay, but the message is true. Thank you for all the home folks that are here. I realize that we are drawing near the end of the summer season and the vacation season and many have uh journeyied and traveled uh for times of respit and that's good that's scriptural and it took place but it's always an exciting time when everybody starts gathering in and gathering back home and uh all the events that you've heard announced upcoming events back to school uh revive revival. Uh I would tell you in the month of August we'll also be having our anniversary services and uh we'll be having our uh special Labor Day weekend. A lot of exciting things that will continue to go on as we begin a new school year. So thank you First Apostolic Church family for all that you do here in the kingdom of the Lord. In fact, I'm going to preach a little bit maybe about that today. If you would indulge me, I would call your attention to the book of Luke the 9inth chapter. The book of Luke the 9inth chapter, we'll read a few verses beginning with verse number 28. Luke 9 beginning with verse number 28. And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he speaking of Jesus took Peter and John and James and went up into a mountain to pray. Help me by saying went up into a mountain. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered and his raignment was white and glistening. And behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias, or many scholars say Elijah, who appeared in glory, and spake of his deceased which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. They went up into a mountain to pray. So for a few moments this morning, I would speak to you on this subject. A mountaintop experience. A mountaintop experience. Let's pray. Lord Jesus, I thank you for your precious presence that we are experiencing here today. Lord, the praise and worship that's gone up and you're acknowledging that by sending your blessings down upon us today. We are so grateful to be in your presence. Now Lord, as we study your anointed word, let it be a guide to us, a lamp to our feet, a light to our path. Lord, nothing that I can say, but Lord, your anointed word can minister and change our hearts this day. Let all that we do be for your glory and honor. The name of Jesus we pray. Amen. a mountaintop experience. Passage of scripture that I read in your hearing tells of Jesus drawing away from the multitudes and from several events that had taken place. If if you take the time to go into Luke the 9th chapter and begin reading at verse number one, you'll find this was the time that Jesus would be commissioning his disciples to go preach the gospel and commissioning them to do healing works, to pray prayers of faith for healing. And uh this was that height of excellence in the ministry of Jesus and his disciples to the point that there were many rumors going around. Herod himself was perplexed and afraid because the rumors were getting around about Jesus. The rumor mill was saying that John the Baptist who Herod had beheaded had uh been resurrected. Some were saying John the Baptist has come back to life. Others were saying Elias or Elijah uh was uh who had been uh transfigured uh had now come back and was ministering. Others said that there's uh great prophets. Some I'm sure even thought that maybe Moses was around again. And there was a lot of rumors going on. And so as all the miracles and signs and wonders were taking place, Jesus called his disciples aside and he said, "Who do men say that I am?" And they began telling Jesus all of these rumors that had been told. He said, "But then who do you say that I am?" And they said, "We say that you are Jesus the Christ." But it would be at this point that while he told them, "You have rightly spoken, he would begin also explaining more completely to them what his task and responsibility was. He would tell of his sufferings, what he would go through, that the redemption plan, that his blood would be shed for us even today would start to take place. And after he revealed this to them and after other miracles of provisions took place with the multitudes, they withdrew themselves. The Bible said to a uh desert place near Betheada. And uh Jesus after eight days of these sayings would take Peter and John and James and he said, "Guys, I I want you to go with me. We're going to the mountain to pray." Now, hopefully that has at least set a scene for where we are now because What an awesome opportunity to go to the mountain with Jesus and pray. Figuratively speaking in uh much of our culture, a mountaintop experience is the height of where you want to be. You want to be up on the mountain. That's an exciting place. We live surrounded by mountains and uh we got folks that visit visit this time of year. There's folks that want to go to the mountains and a mountaintop experience figuratively is a very positive thing. It's a super amazing thing. I you know I I can't help but remark uh this time of year if you go up to the mountains near where we live you'll see a lot of cars from Florida. And if you go down to the beach, you'll see a lot of cars from Tennessee. So, you're never satisfied no matter what. But that's an aside. The mountain is where you want to be. >> Somebody pinned the words to a song said, "We're not in the valley. We're just changing mountain tops. Our goal is to be on the mountain." So, with that said, let me figuratively talk to us today for a little bit. For you see, we have all had the opportunity and indeed for the past several weeks and months even to have mountaintop experiences. Just as we drew close to the end of National Christian School competition, many of our students journeyed and had an awesome time of fun and fellowship being with young folks of other apostolic Christian schools from around the nation competing and fellowshipping and having a good time. No sooner than that ended, we had graduation for our seniors and honored them. No sooner than that ended, we hosted right here in the city of Knoxville General Ministry Conference of the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ. And what a marvelous several days of of worship and praise. It it was a mountaintop experience. No sooner than that ended, many of our students, they headed out and went to Strong Tower camp and had another several days of excitement, Holy Ghost fil preaching and anointing, all kind of things. We had Kids Quest Camp right here at First Apostolic Church, our our little ones coming together, young folks getting the Holy Ghost. And I'm not even through June yet. July rolled in camp meeting, tri-state district camp meeting. What an awesome time we experienced at Tri-State District Camp Meeting. We had we went from there. Many young folks journeyed up to NAYC for youth congress. 40,000 apostolics together. Reported that over a thousand received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Many of our young folks travel to Poland with the AYC journey to minister with brother and sister Adams on a a a special missions journey. Man, we've been living on the mountains. All I can tell you, it's been exciting. What a wonderful time we have all experienced. And I also hasten to add, we've been on a mountaintop experience right here at First Apostolic Church. Even some the moms and dads who weren't able to make all those those journeys, they've been here prayer warriors, worshiping, facilitating us being able to do all of these things that we've done. We've been on the mountain. But let me tell you, many of the venues, obviously not the church where we hosted some events, but many of the venues where all this stuff took place, if you went there today where mighty worship had gone on, the musical instruments are gone. The lights and screens have been removed. The speakers and microphones have been put away. The lobbies that were once full of Holy Ghost fil apostolic young folks fellowshipping and communing together are now silent and echo when a single individual walks through them. The vans and buses have been loaded and folks have returned to their abode. And frankly, sometimes we can find ourselves a bit melancholy and lonely when we think about these events and they're over. So I ask you a question today. Is your mountaintop experience really over? I'm not referring to a specific location today, but indeed I'm asking is the spirit of revival, the spirit of camp meeting, the spirit of conference really over? Is inspiration that we experienced over with? I declare to you, I say a thousand times, no. Camp meeting still here. Revival is still here. Is there anybody else in the house that still feels the power of the Holy Ghost when they begin to sing today? I'm calling everybody out. My mountaintop experience is not over with. The same Holy Ghost that's been fallen in June and July as we approach the month of August. I'm here to have church. I'm here to keep going. How about you? Hallelujah. You see, Peter and James and John in Luke 9 got invited to a mountaintop prayer meeting with Jesus. That ain't camp meeting, but that's pretty good if you ask me. Jesus invites you to a prayer meeting. You ought to go. But I noticed as we read it, verse 28 said, "It came to pass about eight days after these saint, he took Peter and John and James and went up to the mountains to pray." But notice what verse 29 said. It said, "And as he prayed, where did they go? They went to pray, but he prayed. Sometimes if we aren't careful when we get to the mountaintop, we have many good intentions going there, but we find ourselves not doing our part. Jesus was doing his part. He was praying. They went to pray, but he prayed. Some of us make commitments during an a mountaintop altar experience. We turn this whole sanctuary into an altar during camp meeting. And here's what's happened. We make commitments. I'm going to pray more. I'm going to witness more. I'm going to worship more. I'm going to commit to be holy and live separate from the world. I'm gonna stop gossiping. I'm gonna stop sinning. That was our promises. That was our commitments. That was our intentions. But sometimes we find Jesus doing all the work. And if we aren't careful, we'll get drowsy spiritually and while we're on the mountain go spiritually fast asleep. Now notice in the chronology of this passage when Jesus prayed verse 29 the fashion of his countenance was altered and his raignment was white and glistening. Notice his countenance was altered his and his raignment his dress his appearance was changed. I'm here to tell you a mountaintop experience in prayer will change your countenance. Now the dictionary definition of one's countenance is the human face especially as an indicator of mood or character. Didn't know we were going to go there. I thought we was going to talk about shouting and dancing and what brother Dean call it? Bugalooing, huckabucking, whatever it was. But it said his countenance and your countenance in a mountaintop experience of prayer should change your mood or your character. Prayer changes one's mood and one's character. Sincere prayer can change you. Now that term mood that's in the definition, not a scriptural term, but the term mood means a conscious state of mind or predominant emotion. Could I interject that prayer will change your mood and your face? Don't go around looking sour all the time. If you got the Holy Ghost, some thinks I quit preaching and started meddling. But let me tell you, God's people ought to be the happiest people. We ought to smile so much that folks wonder what we're up to. I've got the Holy Ghost in me. I'm not an old sad sack. Get a smile on your face. Get some spring in your step. I don't feel like springing. Well, feel in a different place. You got the Holy Ghost in you. Let this world know there's something special about you. Hallelujah. [Applause] And could I also interject, it'll change your mood, not make you moody. >> There's a difference. The term moody defines as given to unpredictable changes of mood, especially sudden bouts of glooiness and sullenness. Well-worn story. You've heard Bishop tell it and you've heard me tell it, so I'm going to tell it again just in case there's one hadn't heard it. Story goes that there was a guy stood around all sadfaced all the time and his grandson said, "Papa, why do you look like you do all the time?" He said, "I've got religion." Said they walked through the barnyard and the grandson said, "Look, Peppa, the mules got religion, too. We need to straighten our face up. Change our countenance. A good prayer meeting ought to change us, not make us sullen, not make it should change our character. We should love better. We should live better. We should be kind if we'll get a mountaintop experience prayer meeting going on. >> Did you know you can pray and pray for the wrong reasons and come out of the prayer meeting with the wrong attitude? with prayer, brother Makul. Well, scripture gives an account of it. Luke 18:9 said, and he spake this parable. Jesus given a parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others. Lord have mercy. I'm going to pray because I'm so righteous and I despise others. Two men went up to the temple to pray. the one a Pharisee, the other a publican. You see, one can pray with the wrong attitude. >> The Pharisees stood and prayed dust with himself. God, I thank thee that I'm not as the other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even this publican. Please hear you, pastor. Today, we can go through mountaintop experiences. We can go to events and see a mighty move of God. And we can come home with a sullen, moody attitude and feel like we're holier than anybody else around us. Let me tell you, proper prayer will make you appreciate everything around you. You'll be thankful for what God's allowed you to experience, but not at the expense of disdaining and looking down on anybody else. Some of the stuff you got to attend might have been because somebody else stayed home and worked and allowed you to go to those events. Young folk, hear me. Don't come home from any event feeling like you're so spiritual that that stuff on your shoulder is angel dust. That's still dandruff like everybody else gets. Instead, come home thankful. Don't let your mood be changed. You can become self-righteous like the Pharisee even after a mountaintop prayer experience if you don't get selfright. So it said his countenance was changed. He said I fast twice a week. I give tithe that all I possess. Prayer wasn't changing him. This was word regurgitation in prayer. I've heard that said worse. But the publican standing a far off would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smokeote his breast, saying, "God, be merciful to me a sinner." I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other. For everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased. If you think you're more spiritual than everybody else, and you pray more than everybody else, you've been praying for the wrong reason. >> Are you speaking against prayer a thousand times? No. I'm speaking for proper prayer, letting it change me. It's not about beating everybody up uh over how many hours you prayed. Will you pray? You better pray. But let it change you. Don't ever let well what the church needs to do. Who do you think you are? You're the church. When you say what this what the church ought to do, that's what you need to do. Proper prayer produces character. The way someone thinks, feels, and behaves, someone's personality. And it said his raignment was white and glisten glistening. Let me tell you, this is an aside. You know, a good prayer meeting will even change the way you want to dress. Boy, some folks got really quiet then. Nobody Everybody settle down. Quit running. I truly believe if more people would look in the mirror and then pray and ask God, "Is my raignment, what I'm wearing, pleasing to you, oh God?" More folk would dress modestly, decently, and holy with a little bit of prayer after they look in the mirror. If more would consider in prayer, what am I trying to represent in my appearance? And then as the prayer took place, noticed what happened. Verse 30 said, "And behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias, who appeared in glory and spake of his deceas, which he would accomplish in Jerusalem." It was especially great to see old friends at camp meeting in conference, bishops, former crusader me. See when with me it's former crusader members after you get out of that age. But the greatest thing of all was the divine visitation of the Lord himself and all the things that I got to experience. But notice as Jesus prayed there was this supernatural visitation of Moses Elias. Some say Elijah. Some say John the Baptist. But where was Peter, James, and John doing the supernatural visitation on the mountain? Buddy, they were sawing logs. And I don't mean with a mullic chainsaw. They were asleep on the mountain. You can fall asleep spiritually, even during a mighty move of God, even during a camp meeting or a conference. They were heavy with The Bible said, can you imagine going to sleep in a prayer meeting with Jesus? But I do have some good news. They did wake up. It said, "And when they awake, they saw his glory and the two men that stood with him." I say to all, wake up. Camp meeting's not over. Conference is not over. That mountaintop experience can be perpetual for us. Even though we're not physically on top of the mountain or at an event, a mountaintop experience can keep us even when we have to come off the mountain. I'm always so delighted by the spiritual awakening that takes place at all events. And I've got news for you. If you ever go to sleep, Satan does not want you to wake up. But if you do, let me also tell you this. Satan already has a plan to put you back to sleep. Just since the last event you attended, he's been trying to feed you spiritual warm milk and cookies. He's got the backsliders lully lullabi planted in your ear. I'm here to tell you, stay awake. Stay awake. The mountaintop experience is not over. We're still on the mountain. It doesn't matter who's gone home. Brother Dean headed back to Louisiana. All those other churches that were here, they've gone back to their abode and they're having church at their place. We here at First Apostolic Church, we've got to stay on the mountain and keep letting the Holy Ghost move mightily every service. We've got to fulfill the promises that we've made unto God. >> Now, you think I'm changing horses in the middle of the stream, but I'm really not. For as we continue with the chronology of this passage, I want you to notice what happened in verse 33 of Luke 9. And it came to pass as they departed from him th that divine visitation's over. It's going away. Now they're departing from Jesus. Peter said unto Jesus, "Master, it's good for us to be here." Duh. But here was the problem. Now understand impetuous high and low Peter. We've talked about that too many times. The highs and the lows that he had in his walk with the Lord. Man, he first went to sleep. Now when he wakes up, he said, "Man, this is a good thing. We ought to just stay here. Let us make three tabernacles. One for thee, one for Moses, and one for Elias." Notice it says, "Not knowing what he said." He didn't know what he was asking for. While he thus spake, there came a cloud and overshadowed them and they feared as they entered into the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud saying, "This is my beloved son. Hear him." He had to come to reality. He was ready to put up a a hut for everybody. That's if you look up the uh the definition of that that tabernacle in this instance, it meant a hut, a little dwelling place. He said, "We ought to Jesus, this is so great. We need to put three little huts up here and just stay on the mountain." Well, that sounds sounds neat. I want camp meeting spirit. I want revival spirit. I want it to continue, but it has to continue in us rather than a physical location. Sometimes physically you got to come down off the mountain and go to the real world. Works coming on Monday, >> but I can stay on the mountain in my spirit. You see, Peter hadn't figured it out yet. He hadn't been able to make the separation. He said, "Let's just stay up here on the mountain." Jesus, it was not a realistic request. We can sometimes feel after events are over with. Oh, I just want to stay here. I I don't want this to ever end. Let's just all quit our jobs and come to church every day. It'll be great till your electric bill comes in. Car payment comes due. There's a reality of life that we have to live in a mountaintop experience, but we physically will come down off the mountain. And you know what happens when you come down off the mountain? Everybody else is not going to be all always as excited as you are about what's been going on. Verse 37 said this. And it came to pass that on the next day when they were come down from the hill, much people met them. And notice what happened. And behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son, for he is mine only child. And lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crith out, it teareth him, that he foamth again, and bruising him hardly depart from him. Let me tell you, when you go to work Monday, you may run into some unclean spirits. Are you equipped? You're probably not going to run into quite as many folks that wants to shout and dance and have a good time as you did at conferences or camp meeting. Brother Cool, are you demeaning it? No. I'm telling you, it's what's in us, not where we are. The power of the Holy Ghost should keep us in a mountaintop experience even when we face adversity and we first we face bad spirits. But you know what happened? God opened the door. He had he had given them authority. They had been in prayer meeting with him and uh they met this guy with an unclean spirit. And here was the testimony. And I besought thy disciples to cast him out and they could not. And Jesus answered and said, "Oh faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and ser you bring thy son hither?" Jesus boldly confronted the evil spirit. And as he was yet coming, the devil threw him down and tear him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the child and delivered him again to his father. Notice verse 30 43. And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. I'm here to tell you it's not just on the mountaintop physically when God moves. If you've got the power of the Holy Ghost in you, you have power. >> You have power over adversity. Will adversity come? Yes, it will. It's not going to be a primrose path. Every day is not going to be sunshine. But I'm here to tell you, when you've got the power of the Holy Ghost with you, he'll take you through the storms, he'll bring deliverance in a difficult, adverse time. Oh, let me hasten to the close as the clock races. You can find a synoptic account of these events in Mark 9. When the disciples could not cast the evil spirit out, Jesus would do the work and then he would tell them that this kind cometh forth by what? Prayer and fasting. This is why Jesus would go on to say in Mark 16. Go you into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. We've got to first be witnesses. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. He that believeth not shall be dan. And these signs shall follow them that believe. Let me tell you, we should be the one leading signs rather than us following signs. Too many folks are looking for a sign when we should be the believers that signs follow us. If there's needing for healing in the church, God will heal. If there's needing for deliverance in the church, God will deliver. It's not that we're looking, well, I'm going to run over here because I heard this and I'm going to go over here and do that. No. Stay in the church. Let the signs take place as are needed. In fact, Luke said, "An evil generation is who seeks a sign." But amazement was what took place when they saw the power of God. Praise team musicians, get ready quickly. Let me tell you this day if we will stay amazed at the power of God. Stay amazed. Now that term amazed means to overwhelm with wonder. I'm here to tell you I'm still amazed at all that God does. If you're not amazed at what God's doing, you're not being observant of what he's doing. There's too many in this room today. There's too many testimonies of miracles. There's too many sitting under the sound of my voice today. If it was not for the amazing grace of God, you wouldn't be here today. You wouldn't be alive. Think what brought you here. Think think where you were six months ago. Think where somebody hear me. I'm not here to testify to the evil that we've lived in. I'm here to testify to the deliverance that God's done for us. Some of you, you've had miracles wrought in your life that even afford you. You ought to be dead. You ought to be dead now. Hey, which prayer have you been praying? Don't sit there and think I'm so good and all that. I'm here to tell you, it's amazing no matter what your lineage is. It's amazing no matter where you've come from that God's afforded you the privilege to be in his house today. I'm on the mountain. I'm on the mountain. I'm still on the mountain. Oh, hallelujah. Stand with me. Oh, pastor I'm needing something today. You're in the right place. If you don't have the Holy Ghost, today's the day to get the Holy Ghost. If you haven't been baptized in Jesus' name, we have water. We'll lift that screen and we'll put you down. We've got clothes for men, women, boys, and girls. If you haven't repented of your sins, that's the first step. You need to come to an altar of repentance and say, "God, I'm sorry for my sin." If you're in a backsliding condition, God's not a God up here an ogre trying to beat you over the head. He's a God of love and mercy and forgiveness and grace. If you've never made a start, he wants to forgive everything in your life. I want to stay amazed. [Music] I would tell us all finally be cognizant of the fact that God works sometimes instantly and immediately. But there are other times that the healing process is just that, a process that requires patience. I've seen it. Praise team sometimes says sings a song. I've seen it with my own eyes. I've seen him instantaneously do mighty and marvelous things. But I can also attest to the fact that I've seen God through a process work in people's lives who've come into the house of God hungry, seemingly with no hope. And I've seen a repentant heart suddenly begin to change, their character, their reignment, their outlook, their mood, their direction. And suddenly a mountaintop dwelling is inside them. The power of the hol holy ghost has been gradually moving all the time. I know not your situation today, nor do I need to know, but God knows. But in just a moment, I'm going to open this altar for every believer and every individual in this house, no matter your circumstance. If you need to repent, you can come with us and repent. If you need a renewing and a refreshing to take that first step of faith together into an altar of repentance and say, "God, I want to serve you with the vigor that I once did. I want that mountaintop experience." Or if you have been basking in the glory of multiple wonderful experiences this summer to come with a determination that I'm going to keep going. Hey, we got back to school revival coming here in just a few weeks. We're going to be celebrating our 69th anniversary, brother and sister. Acres is going to be with us. We're going to keep having mountain top experiences. Hear me. No, no valley experiences here. Whatever your circumstance, I want to open the altar now for you to come. Would you step out by faith and say, "God, I'm going to stay on this mountain. I'm going to keep you inside me. >> Get what you need from the Lord right now. [Music] If you walked [Music] me of his name, >> just the mention of his name. >> Just the mention of his name. >> Just the mention of his name. >> Just the mention of his name. >> Just the mention of his name. [Music] >> Jesus. >> Jesus. Yeah. [Music] >> Yeah. Yeah. [Music] Would you give Jesus high praise in this house? Lord, I praise you. Lord, keep us on the mountain in our hearts. Let us go from this place refreshed, always equipped, ready to be a witness for you. We thank you. We praise you. We love you. In Jesus' name we pray.
