and welcome to first apostolic church on this labor day weekend what a great crowd of believers are here in the house of the lord on this sunday morning so good to see every one of you here we welcome the guests that have already been mentioned and i'll say a special uh welcome uh back home chase and christina and baby peyton good to have you all here these are home folks that happen to live in georgia now and we always lay claim to them good to have them home and to all of you so good to see you here on this sunday morning i would add my voice to the announcements that have been made before obviously when we plan a day like today uh the weather is in the lord's hands i i had a funeral director one time uh asked me if i couldn't do something about the weather because it was raining at a funeral and i reminded him that i said hey i'm in sales i'm not in management so the lord's going to do what he's going to do and so we say yes to his will whatever it is but i realize that there is some uh possible rainy weather in the area a little bit of rain won't hurt us but a lot of rain will and certainly a dangerous weather with lightning and those kind of things and we will be cognizant of that and ask everyone to use their best judgment and we will also use our best judgment as we proceed this afternoon at five o'clock also i remind our church family we practice modesty in all things that we do in appearance whether it's in church whether it's out in the day-to-day world or whether it's at a picnic if you've invited a guest please ask them to dress modestly to attend our picnic so they will not be uncomfortable and embarrassed uh to be with us but we'll be having a good time a lot of games fun food and fellowship so don't you miss today's uh activities that are planned to begin at five o'clock uh our labor day weekend celebration and then i also want to say is pastor anthony was uh relisting the many events that have been going on this past week this past thursday i had the great opportunity a great opportunity of being part of the uh swearing-in ceremony of our one of our new county commissioners sister ronda lee and it was such a privilege we congratulate you she is now official bishop mccool and myself were both able to be there and hold the bible she uh wanted to make sure that uh that was known for sure that she was affirming on the word uh all of the responsibilities that she had and then just before the ceremony was to begin i was absolutely so proud with the godly pride for the entire senior class of apostolic christian school along with pastor anthony showed up and all i can tell you they did you proud that if you'll i'll just have to tell you you that are internet savvy go online look at a few of the pictures but it's one of the finest looking most beautiful handsome group of young women and young men representing apostolic christian school that were there for that uh commission and uh mayoral uh swearing in they also not only had their picture made with sister ronda they had their picture made with our county mayor and they represented you so well and so i'm i'm thankful for all the opportunities that god is affording us as we minister here at first apostolic church i want to take you to the word of the lord this morning and i hope that god would touch our hearts with his word if we'll be receptive he will do that very thing i would call your attention to the book of first corinthians the ninth chapter first corinthians 9 will read four verses that you should already be familiar with first corinthians 9 24 we read know ye not that they which run in a race run all but one receiveth the prize so ron everybody say run that you may obtain [Music] and every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things now they do it to obtain a corruptable crown but we an incorruptible i therefore so run not as uncertainly so fight i not as one that beateth the air but i keep under my body and bring it into subjection lest that by any means when i've preached to others i myself should be a castaway for a few moments this morning i would title my message with this question why are you running why are you running let's pray savior i love you god i'm so grateful to be in this wonderful crowd of witnesses that are gathered here on this holiday weekend lord we submit ourselves to you and we affirm that we love to be in your presence on this sunday morning thank you for the praise and worship that has already gone up and for your blessings and presence that we feel now in this house lord let your word minister mildly to us let us speak as your mouthpiece in the name of jesus we pray amen and amen why are you running we have just started a new school year the day was that this was the last weekend before school started but that was an ancient time that some of we old timers remember now school's been up and running for nearly a month but at the first part of the school year one of the main objectives of instructors and administration is to teach and to review with students and faculty new procedures for the new school year there is indeed a multiplicity of policies and new procedures and new orders of operation new rules that have to be reviewed and then there are old rules that we also have to be reminded of and i guess the most constant rule that anyone in this house who's ever gone to school would remember there was one rule that most all of us had taught to us that was no running in the hall has anybody ever heard that beside me did anybody ever hear that no running in the hall i mean above all other rules it it it appears that no running was a universal rule and aside from that i won't ask for a show of hands but all of us who have heard that rule likely would have to confess if we were really honest that sometime or another we broke that rule guilty i've done it and there's been a few times i got caught and you know what the authority figure would usually say why are you running why are you running and you know what we did most of the time when they ask us that question we begin searching for an excuse we had to come up with some reason create a crisis or come up with some kind of justification for the reason we were running and the real truth is we really didn't know why we were running we just had to run i was so amused this morning while praise team was preparing i was walking through the lobby and i saw brother colby breeding and he had baby [name redacted] with him he's down here on the front row just a lot of times and i was just enjoying it because i knew what i was going to preach and i said well that confirms it because just a few months back brother kobe and sister bree they were carrying [name redacted] around and they'd stand him up on that front view and he'd hold on and he would venture out away and he'd wobble and he'd fall down but as time continued to pass he started getting his balance as time continued to pass he started learning while instead he started walking but he's got it down now is all i can tell you because i saw brother colby and he was high stepping one shoe off one shoe on he had learned to run something inside says i just need to run i gotta run we spend the first six to twelve months of our children's lives trying to teach them to walk and for about the next 15 to 20 years we try to stop them from running it's just innate it's just part of us i gotta run but i got a question for you why are you running what's the purpose in your running for you see our scripture said i therefore so run not as uncertainly there's a purpose to my running please understand the spiritual analogy that is being made in this passage in first corinthians there's a definite message going forth that there has to be a reason and a purpose behind some of the things that we do spiritually there is a reason for our run what's the reason for running he said so i may obtain so the next question next question would be in a spiritual sense so what is it that you want to attain and it goes on to say i want to obtain a corruptable crown if i'm in the flesh but i'm not chasing a corruptable crown i'm chasing an incorruptible crown i'm looking for the prize i've got my eye on the prize and that's why i'm running i'm not just running to run there's purpose behind my running you see in the grecian games those that would be the forerunner of now our olympic games the official prize was nothing more than a crown of olive leaves but associated with that crown of olive leaves was fame honor and all that went along with an athlete and they those who they were representing nowadays from our christian school competition to the olympics the runners receive medals that have somewhat of an intrinsic value but more important the honor and fame that goes along with it the notoriety and the satisfaction of winning is much more important than the prize itself the race that i speak of today is the race that we all must run it said that we would not seek a corruptible crown but an incorruptible crown first corinthians 15 52 says in a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed for this corruptible speaking of our flesh must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality so when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall put on immortality then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written death is swallowed up in victory i'm running for an incorruptible crown i'm running for victory over death i'm running for a victory that is the ultimate victory it's not an olive branch it's not a medal around my neck but i'm running for heaven how about you i'm in a race i want to get to heaven how about you [Applause] that's the ultimate victory with which i speak we must also understand the spiritual analogy of our text when it said only one wins the prize that doesn't mean that only one of us are going to make it to heaven of course not instead if you understand the analogy you've got to understand who you're in a race with for you see we're not running against each other we are not competing with each other we are not trying to beat any other individual but instead every one of us have a personal race and that personal race we're competing against our own flesh and our own self-will we're competing against the enemy himself who would hinder and try to defeat us from reaching that ultimate prize of salvation and an incorruptible crime you see i'm not racing you to heaven but i'm racing my flesh that would try to compete with me i'm racing the old enemy that would try to hinder me and get me on a wrong path i'm in a race and i'm going to win how about you are you going to win your race today are you going to reach the ultimate goal today [Applause] for you see some never get the understanding of the importance of racing and running with a goal in mind some are like the little children they just want to run with no apparent goal in the book of second samuel the 18th chapter i'll paraphrase much but read some we find the account of when david was dealing with an insurrection within his own kingdom from his own family his son solomon and david having to flee from his own kingdom and hide for a portion of time dealt with this insurrection and his loyal warrior joab was assigned to put down the insurrection joab and those who were loyal to david including levitical priests one named zadok they began devising plans and giving information to the point that eventually the insurrection of absalom would be stricken down and david even though his own son had risen against him had said please spare my son if at all possible as you put down the insurrection but joab in his firm ultimate victory mode when absalom fleeing as the battle went against him and his beast when they begin running through the woods the locks of his hair caught in the tree and he was caught in the animal ran out from under him and absalom and his soldiers who were now being defeated were scattered in the woods joab would find him and they would run him through with javelins and take his life contrary to what his own father david had wanted to happen so now when absalom dies joab immediately stops all of the battle going on there was a peace treaty he didn't pursue anyone else he said the battle's over absalom is defeated so let's not attack further and he started bringing messengers together now if you study it a bit you would find that there were those who were called cushites the bible mentions kushai but that apparently by most scholars was not an individual but it was a representative of a race of people who were a particularly adept at long-distance running and joab said to cushi said i've got a message i need you to deliver to david i need you to go tell david that the victory is won but that absalom has been killed and just as he began telling the story there was a young man standing nearby his name was a hemias now ahemias was the son of zadok the levite who had been loyal to david if you study the story more likely he has one of his responsibilities he had been one of the priests that during this insurrection or one of the priests in training who had actually personally had the ark on his shoulder and carried it he had a a bloodline lineage of being a priest and that was his job to carry the ark and to minister and do what the levitical priests were to do but for some reason he didn't want to stay in his lane and do what he was called to do he liked seeing that those messengers go and he said oh let me go tell the story joab said him he asked not today you're not going to deliver the message today i have koosh i i have a messenger who has the message now stay with me and he bid kusha and kusha immediately began taking the message of absalom's demise to david but he has said well could i just run would would you let me just run with him second samuel 18 19 it said then said to him he has the son of zadok let me now run bear the king tidings how that the lord has avenged him of his enemies and joab said to him thou shalt not bear tidings this day but thou shalt bear tithings another day but this day thou shalt bear no tidings because the king's son is dead this is some bad news that's got to be delivered verse 21 then said joab to kushai go tell the king what thou has seen and coushou bowed himself unto job and iran then said to him he has the son of day zadar yet again to joab but whosoever but howsoever let me i pray thee also run after kushai and job said wherefore will thou not ruin my son seeing that thou hast not no tidings ready it's not your job to carry this bad news to david he said but howsoever said he just let me run and he said to him run now get the picture i'm reading it to you but use your own imagination just a bit to understand joab has got some insight here joab realizes that this kushite who is likely a slave and that's his number one deal to be a messenger he's expendable is about to deliver some bad news to david joab knew david david wasn't the greatest person at receiving bad news you all remember bishop osborne preaching last week that david could be a killer in fact that's not what he said he said david was a killer joe had had experience seeing david get bad news if you'll recall when david got word that saul had been killed saul who was pursuing him saul who was his enemy but yet was the anointed of god when the word came that saul had been killed the young man who brought the message even said i put him out of his misery he embellished the story he said i saw that he was mortally wounded and i killed him and i brought his crown and i i i brought his bracelet to you to prove it you know what david said who are you to touch god's anointing david told his servant said kill him he was hard on messengers you can read this for yourself in in first samuel just a few chapters later there were two other brothers who thought again that david would be pleased with the wiping out of saul's bloodline and they found one of saul's grandsons that was still alive jonathan's sons and they slipped into his house and they murdered him and they beheaded him and they brought his head to david i said man we're we're eliminating the competition you know what david said he said who are you to touch the family of god's anointed he said servants fall on them and he said cut their heads off and their hands david was pretty brutal on getting bad news yet uh he has only seen the excitement of running wanted to run and give this message and it wasn't even his message to deliver let me tell you there are some folks who all they would love to do is run a little bit and tell somebody some bad news you better be careful before you delight in carrying bad news it could be bad for your health sometimes you better let the proper messenger give the message [Applause] man i've gone this far it's labor day we can rest monday from all this running did you know i have seen folks that they get an excitement when they hear the word of god preached i do i love to hear the word of god preach in fact i remember bishop j frank wilson i guess was the first one i heard say it i don't know who was the originator it could have been him but he said there's only two kind of preaching makes me want to preach he said them that can preach and then they can't he said in other words anytime i hear preaching it makes me want to preach and you know sometimes if we aren't careful please hear me because i do not want to discourage one individual in this house or one individual under the sound of my voice in that great multimedia world from doing what god has called you to do but let me tell you let me break the news to everybody everybody is not called to preach you can be seated everybody settle down no running now i'll guarantee it just because you get inspiration from a scripture you read or from a testimony you heard that does not necessarily mean you're called to be a preacher now we are all called to be witnesses and we should have the word of god in our heart and be equipped to carry the word in testimony but sometimes you don't have the message to preach you ought not to be running trying to preach [Applause] thank you for that seated ovation please i hope you'll understand my heart what i'm trying to tell you there was someone who was assigned to carry the message there are times that you don't know how the man of god has struggled and prepared and and worked and and and uh prepared with an argument within themselves with their flesh oh whether or should i preach this that the bible tells us that the preacher sought acceptable words looking for ways to say some things and sometimes if we aren't careful we'll feel like we've got the message above what god has to be preached and who's supposed to preach it and deliver it be a witness be a worker but do sometimes sometimes you may be called to carry the ark and not preach the message so notice what happened it said he overtook kushai and him he has overtook kushai in his running passed him up now either he was faster than koushar he knew a shortcut and there's a lot of folks they want to take shortcuts to the gospel being presented there are no shortcuts so verse 26 it says and the watchmen saw well let me let me go back one verse or two verses verse 24 it says and david sat between the two gates and the watchmen went up to the roof over the gate under the wall and lifted up his eyes and looked and behold a man running alone and the watchman cried and told the king the king said if he'd be alone there's tidings in his mouth and he came up pace and drew near david was wanting he was anxious to hear what had become of the fight in particular david wanted to know what had become of absalom his son and the watchman saw another man running and the watchman called unto the porter and said behold another man running alone and the king said he also bringeth tidings and the watchman said me thinketh the running of the foremost or the first is like the running of a hemias the son of zadok and the king said he is a good man and cometh with good tidings and him he is running sent a false impression to king david as to good tidings sometimes the message is not always good sometimes the message is not always positive and sometimes if we aren't careful we can be bragging on sin when we need to be quiet and let the real message go forth that's condemning sin and bringing souls to repentance there's some things we don't need to validate don't prophesy something unless it is absolutely positively 100 thus saith the lord it's not your impression it's not my impression what did the lord say don't go around running because you want to prove how fast you are don't go around running just to say i made the trip and i wanted to say a little something oop i felt good and i won't do you have the message do you have the message of the day have you prayed over it has it been presented to you he gave a false impression because he was a levite son levites sons didn't typically bring bad news levite's son they they these were art carriers these were worshipers these were and here he has called and said on the king all is well i don't think so and he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king and said bless be the lord thy god which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hands against my lord he had a message of victory but he didn't have the complete message and the king said because you understand david wasn't worried about the victory in battle he was still worried about absalom and the king said is the young man absalom safe and him he has answered notice his answer when joab sent the king's servant me thy servant i saw a great tumult but i knew not what it was at best we could call it a disingenuous incomplete message the real truth was suddenly a hemias realized the gravity of the message that was beat to be delivered and it was not his responsibility to deliver it the king said unto him turn aside stand over here and he turned aside and he stood still and behold keusha came and keusha said tidings my lord notice he didn't say all as well he said tithe he said i got a message for the lord hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee he was a skilled messenger he wasn't blunt and say hey your son's dead he had the message and he had the skills to present the message he wasn't running without purpose there was a purpose behind his running and the king said unto kushai is the young man absolutely safe and keusha answered notice the diplomatic way with which he answered the enemies of my lord the king and all that rise against thee to do the hurt be as that young man is he delivered the message but it was with skill it was with grace it was with pity and he reminded david that all who had come against him in the insurrection were now no longer a threat we're all called to be witnesses but we're not all called to preach we cannot deliver the message if we're unprepared one might be smart talented naturally a good speaker or even know a few shortcuts but when it's time to deliver the message if you aren't called and prepared to deliver the message the king might tell you stand aside you hadn't got it boy our text said every man that striveth for the mastery is temperant in all things verse 27 he said i keep under my body and bring it into subjection lest by any means when i preached others i myself should become a castaway there's more to bringing the word than standing behind a pulpit and preparing a speech there's a lifestyle that you need to be able to live if you're going to be a witness for god if you're going to carry the gospel there's more to it to it than a few inspirational thoughts there's preparation there's a life you must lead there's something you must do pleasing before god to present acceptable words at all times there are many who have never fulfilled their call because they were unprepared students who can't prepare the disciplines in their lives like meeting schedules to go to class won't make it in the ministry or in most other vocations as well preparation is essential to success one can't forever wing it and preach on overflow there must be study and preparation if one is not preparing your heart now and feeding yourself now you will never be able to feed the sheep later dr david walker stated a message entitled running unprepared your calling is that of a messenger you are to deliver the message faithfully as you get it from god and the message doesn't come easily or without preparation the battle is raging and we don't need another preacher who takes a verse and then takes a fit he says the fight is on and we don't need another speaker who goes on and on because he can't keep his mouth shut we need preachers who are messengers for god bringing prepared tidings for god if you can't prepare and study now you'll never be able to teach and preach on sundays and wednesdays end quote you see it's important to know that as a messenger there is danger with delivering the message i told you of david's treatment of bad news messengers but let me also tell you this there's some start out running and they forget the purpose of their running second timothy 1 8 said be thou not there therefore ashamed be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our lord nor of me a prisoner but be thou partakers of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of god who hath saved us and called us with a holy calling not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace which was given us in christ jesus before the world begin we must run according to god's purpose not our own paul told timothy it's not your talent or works but it's a holy calling my talent will not make me a messenger for god billy sunday the noted evangelist from the late 1900s and early 1900s he was a former major league baseball player who became a successful one of the most successful evangelists ever and very successful in that time made this statement he said more men fail through lack of purpose than lack of talent if you don't know why you're running you're not going to be successful some start running and then they get distracted and hindered galatians 5 7 said you did run well that's past tense who did it hinder you that you should not obey the truth sign was on the door of a vacant building gone out of business we didn't know what our business was if i don't know why i'm running i'll eventually get tired and i'll quit there will be adversity in our running again from our text it said i therefore so run not as uncertainly i know where the finish line is i know what my purpose is so i so fight i not as one that beateth the air have you ever seen folks shadowbox man these boxers when they're getting in shape i mean you can hear the gloves they'll get one of those uh big uh uh bags that's the best i got with sound effects sorry but you know what when you're fighting the air and beating air the air don't hit back but let me tell you the devil does i'm not going into this fight to fight air i'm not running as uncertain i've got a goal i've got an enemy that i'm running against i'm not competing with you we're not competing against another church we're running against the enemy himself in the flesh that would hinder us we've got a message that's of one purpose and of one goal we're going to be soul winners our goal is still souls i said our goal is still souls i said our goal is still souls we're still running to win souls we're still running for the finish line we're running for victory we cannot get distracted there's a story involving yogi berra the well-known catcher for the new york yankees and hank aaron who at the time of this story was the chief power hitter for the milwaukee braves for all you atlanta brave fans the teams were playing in the world series and as usual yogi was keeping up his ceaseless chatter and the his intent was to pep up his teammates on one hand and distract the milwaukee batters on the other hand as aaron came to the plate yogi tried to distract him by saying henry you're holding the bat wrong you're supposed to hold it so you can read the trademark aaron didn't say anything but when the next pitch came he hit it into the left field bleachers after rounding the base and tagging up at home aaron looked at yogi bear and said i didn't come up here to read i will not be distracted from my goal and where i'm running to i'm not running to be famous we're not running to be the biggest church in the world we're not running to be bragged on by the world but we're running to be soul winners i didn't come up here to read i came up here to win souls i didn't come up here for fame i came to win souls we must continue being soul winners everything we do no matter what ministry it is if you're dealing with two-year-olds if you're coaching a ball team if you're teaching a bible team you're winning souls if you're greeting at the door if you're an usher if you're a soundtech if you're a singer if you're a saint you know what saints do saints try to produce more saints they greet folks they look for somebody that's doing say we want you to be welcome here first apostolic church we want you to be at home we're so winners we got to remember why we're running [Applause] musicians come quickly we must run to the end with purpose hebrews 12 1 said wherefore seen also we are compass about with so great a cloud of witnesses let us lay aside every weight and sin that death so easily beset us we can't let sin distract us we can't let the weight of everyday life the tasks of life distract us and weigh us down from running with purpose looking unto jesus here's our example the author he started it and the finisher jesus knows how to finish the author and the finisher of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross listen we're not in the hundred yard dash now understand in the flesh i used to be pretty quick in fact the older i get the faster i used to be at least to hear me telling but the the the crew i never could figure out were the distance runners man i'm talking about these distance runners they would take off they weren't sprinting now i i was good at 100 yards after that anything longer than 100 yards that's why i bought a jeep you know but these distance runners they would set a pace a steady pace they weren't always out in front in fact other teams sometimes would put a rabbit out there that was an individual that never intended to finish but that rabbit had one of two responsibilities and you never knew if they were on the other team what their responsibility was sometimes the rabbit was to set a faster pace so everyone could work toward the goal line quicker but sometimes rabbits would go out just to entice some of the runners to burn themselves out too quickly you see we're not in a sprint we're in a marathon ecclesiastes 9 11 said i return so unto the son that the race is not to the swift nor the battle of strong neither yet bred to the wise nor rich or to men of understanding nor yet favor to men of skill but time and chance happen unto them there's a lot of things that's going to take place in life the enemy's going to put roadblocks in your way but just by chance there's going to be some things happen just by mere time things are going to take place but jesus said in matthew but he that shall endure unto the end the same shall be saved stand with me [Music] finally i would remind you what paul told timothy ii timothy 4 7. he said i fought a good fight it's a fight this race is a fight we're fighting against fatigue we're fighting against distraction fighting against he said i fought a good fight he said i finished the course i made it to the tape and broke the tape how did i do that i kept the faith don't lose faith today let me tell somebody in this house if maybe you've been distracted and tempted to stop running don't lose faith don't lose hope because here's what he said henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness it's not a bunch of olive leaves weaved together it's not a metal that will tarnish and fade and lose value but henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the lord the righteous judge we got a finish line judge here he's looking at the line and he knows who's going to finish he knows those who have endured the hardships he knows those who have continued to run with purpose the righteous judge shall give me at that day and not only to me but to all them you see i told you at the beginning we're all in this race and we're all going to win it said he shall give me on at that day not only to me not to me only but to unto all men also here's the common ground that love his appearing do you want to see jesus i do i'm looking forward to seeing jesus jesus is coming back for some finishers jesus is coming back with an incorruptible crown a crown of righteousness for the finishers if you're in this house today if you want to be a finisher if you don't want to stop if you don't want to be distracted i would encourage you to step out from your seat and make your way down to the altar today and say god i'm going to finish what i started i've committed to this race i ask you to give me strength i ask you to give me courage renew my strength restore my faith let me finish what i've been started and lord let me do what you'd have me do all the days of my life praise team would you worship with us hallelujah [Music] hallelujah [Music] is [Music] [Applause] lord i am [Music] is [Music] what you call me to be [Applause] [Music] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i say yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is and that's what i'll be would you love jesus would you love jesus would you thank him for the race he set before you would you leave this place today with fresh determination i will not run as uncertain i know what i've been called to do i reaffirmed my direction whatever you call me to do i'm gonna win i'm gonna win i'm gonna win hallelujah glory glory glory first apostolic church i love you i thank you for being winners workers faithful those who endure to the end i would remind us all [Music] part of scripture was holy times but part of scripture was also breaking bread and fellowship today is a an afternoon of fellowship
