amen and you can start returning back to your seat just remain standing and for a brief moment we'll grab your Bibles we're going to go to the Book of Psalms Psalm 51 what a tremendous word timely word we heard last week and again this morning Pastor has just been on fire and I think we should give the Lord praise and thanks for the word we heard last week and this week I don't want to be a sellout I want to be sold out but I also want to be a quick Christian that is hard to say and I won't try to say it fast but I want to be that Psalm 51 now I I I am a preacher but I I feel like I'll probably Treach more than I will preach tonight uh that's teaching and preaching put together and I want to show you something something that's been upon uh my heart for weeks so Psalm 51 we're going to read two verses just for the sake of time verses 6 and 7 Psalm 51 ver verses 6 through 7 I honor all of our leadership all of our pastors our all the Ministries and the church here the saints of God we honor you tonight Psalm 51 verses 6 and 7 behold thou desirous truth in the inward Parts someone say inward Parts you desire truth in the inward parts and in the hidden part someone say hidden part thou th shalt make me to know wisdom Purge me with hisp and I shall be clean wash me and I shall be whiter than snow tonight want to minister from these two texts truth in the inward Parts truth in the inward Parts you can put your Bibles down would you slip up your hand again and would you pray and ask the Lord to help us to hear from his word father give us ears to hear what the spirit is saying at this time Lord help us to hear the word of God help us to be able to not just hear it but to be doers of your word and let there be a spirit of understanding Lord I am nothing Lord and I just want to get out of the way and let your word and your spirit come forth and I pray that you'd help me find the right words to say with the right in the right way tonight that would help somebody tonight to have truth in the inward parts of our life in Jesus name we pray and everyone say said amen would you clap your hands again unto the Lord before you're [Music] seated you could be seated tonight truth in the inward Parts David could be his life is summed up as a man after God's Own Heart being a man or a woman after God's Own Heart does not mean that you're perfect he is David is a example that to be one after God's Own Heart to have God's heart to be close to him and to know him is not to be perfect it is not to be Flawless but it is to be someone who understands what God wants David uh had a understanding of the Gospel before the New Testament even took place he had an a firsthand experience of the gospel because he knew what it was like to fail he knew what it was like to sin and he knew what it was like to be forgiven does anybody know what it's like to be forgiven does anybody know what it's like to feel forgiven it is here in the state of failure that God reaches down and lets us experience the good news of forgiveness isn't it all know what it feels like to be Unworthy of God's grace and love and it is those who have been forgiven much who know how to love and forgive others much the Bible says that David failed and they they called it this in the Old Testament the matter of UAH the hittite for the sake of time I'm not going to go through all the details but needless to say David slept with uah's wife while UAH was out fighting she became pregnant and then to cover these things up he had Uriah killed in battle attle he broke three of God's commands in this one event he coveted committed adultery and he murdered but when Nathan the prophet came and confronted him for his sin and told him that God knew and even though he thought no one else knew God knew and he was to repent and that's what David does Psalm 51 they're great chapters all all of the Bible's great right all the Bible's great all of it's inspired and authoritative but there are just some great chapters isn't there there are just some chapters that you learn to love Psalm 23 is one of those maybe it's Acts 2 on the day of Pentecost I think Romans chapter number 8 is one of the greatest chapters in all the Bible but is Psalm 51 is is a prayer that many of us know because we have tasted the gall of guilt but we have also tasted the sweetness of grace and mercy when we make this our prayer you see a man throwing himself upon the mercies of God he he pleads the opening line is have mercy upon me oh God he throws himself on on God's mercy and he uses three words to describe his failure and this is your homework for this week if you just really want to spend time in this chapter we don't have all the time tonight but there's just so much here and trying to get this in like 40 minutes is rather difficult but three words that David uses to describe his failure transgression iniquity and sin the word transgression means to Rebel it means to go beyond so here's the line and you go beyond it that's to transgress David transgressed the law of God he went beyond what God would allow and the Lord told him this had you even just you have everything already I've given you everything that you could desire and things you don't even really have never asked of me you've got it I would have given you anything and so David went beyond what God even allowed and so we become transgressors when we go beyond what God has commanded the writer of Proverbs 13 and 15 says 15 says good understanding giveth favor but the way of a transgressor is hard because when you go beyond what God has provided you make things hard on yourself these there are boundaries that God sets and when you lines have fallen to me David would say in Pleasant places and so when you stay within the boundaries of the pleasant places there's peace and safety and joy and pleasure but when we go beyond we transgress and that way is hard the word iniquity that David uses in the Hebrew means perversion or crooked dealing David's actions were perverse and depraved what God declared straight David decided to distort his actions were part of a deeper problem he even says I was born or shapen in iniquity it is in us to go beyond it is in us to Dort now in adultish we have this on Wednesday nights for our 18 to 30 year olds I've been teaching a series called the seven deadly sins and the Bible doesn't put these seven deadly sins together but in history uh they have found themselves categorized this way and so the seven deadly sins are seeds to a million other sins and what happens is what sin is and we're going to talk about this in a moment it is a distortion of reality it it distorts what God gives us can I give you an example God has created all things and in his creation he declared he stepped back and said this is good and there are things that God has given us there are desires that God puts in us that are good we have to eat right I love to eat I love to eat and so we have to eat but what happens is sin distorts what is good and it becomes comes gluttony there's nothing wrong with needing to eat we got to eat there are other desires that God gives us and puts within us and what sin does it begins to distort and pervert and and and and and make it what it should not be and we think it's going to be something that meeting a desire and this is a part of this but what happens is we turn it into sin so what God has given us again this is the boundaries these are the places this is what God allows and he has created but when we go beyond that it becomes iniquity now look what he says here in verses 1 through3 of Psalm 51 have mercy upon me oh God according to thy loving kindness according unto the multitude of thy Tender Mercies blot out and I want you if you have a pen or a highlighter if you're just looking up here maybe you want to make a mental note blot out my someone say my my transgressions Wash Me from mine someone say mine mine iniquity cleanse me from my sin someone say my sin David admits his sin is his own he does not blame beath Sheba he does not cast dispersion upon Nathan the prophet for preaching a convicting sermon getting all up in my business you don't need to be like that no he says this is my sin oh had Esau and Saul had they had they realized their sin see they were sorry for the consequence of their sin but David was sorry for the sin we go back to the Garden I know brother you talk about the garden all the time it's because everything goes back there Eve when she is confronted and Adam when he is confronted they do not say my transgression my iniquity my sin Eve said the serpent Adam said the woman but David knows that true repentance and healing takes place in the realization that it is my sin it is mine it's not Nathans it's not be sheba's it's not anybody else's it's not Israel it's mine the word sin used so much in Old and New Testament means to miss the mark fall short Paul would say we have all sinned who all who's all everyone all have sinned and come short of the glory of God what Mark did David Miss what Mark do we miss we miss the mark of God's character we talk of Glory God's glory it is the summary of all of God's Divine attributes his Holiness his righteousness his Justice his goodness when we sin we come short of that the scripture shows that sin is more than just a moral failure sin stains according to James sin is considered idolatry according to Colossians 3 and5 Isaiah says that our sin separates us from God and we know that the end the consequence of sin leads to death I I want to talk to you about something tonight again I know I'm not preaching we're not running but I want to help us because this has been in me and on me for weeks and the the the students upstairs and adultist on Wednesday night I've been hearing this and I keep telling I'm going to preach about it and teach about it and here it is there's an overlooked characteristic of sin and that is it is deceitful we know sin stains we know sin separates we know sin kills but sin in its very essence is a lie think about that Hebrews 3:13 let's let's look at this the writer says but exhort one another daily while it is called today lest any of you be hardened look at this hardened through the deceitfulness of sin the word deceitfulness in Greek means cheat trick defraud deceive decep the chief characteristic of sin is deceitfulness how does it do that sin seduces a person to believe what is false to be true sin holds out a benefit what actually proves to be an injury it never shows you what it really is it's lying to you Thomas Brook's a pit and said this deceit will kiss the soul and yet betray the soul like Judas it kisses then kills like joab it salutes then slays that is sin how does sin lie to us first sin deceives Us by promising what it can never deliver sin says go ahead it will be fun sin says go ahead you'll enjoy it sin says you you'll feel better you'll feel more more fulfilled life will be better for you go ahead and take it go ahead and tell the LIE go ahead and jump in bed with that person go ahead you need this it will bring you happiness what was it that the serpent said to eve eat this fruit and you will be like God sin never shows you what's behind the curtain it tricks us into wanting that which we know will destroy us it lies it's a it's it's a lie it's a bound up bottled up lie but it's dressed up in such a way that we think it will give us something that it can never deliver second sin deceives Us by convincing us that what happens to others will not happen to us sin deceives Us by convincing us that what happens to others will never happen to us let's say that we know that 10 times out of 10 people get caught when they sin 10 times out of 10 and yet sin will convince you that we are going to be the exception the worst kind of lie is the lie that you tell yourself and believe that's the worst kind the the like lying obviously is condemned don't lie to others don't bear false witness but you know the worst person you can lie to is yourself and then believe the lie some are so seduced by sin and the lies that they repeat to themselves they begin to believe the lie it won't happen to me sin is error it's false it is a lie in its very essence this is why sin and Satan are so closely related look at what Jesus said in John 8:44 you are of your father the devil now that's really not a great way to get a congregation going right you're of your father the devil and the lust of your father you will do he was a murderer from the beginning and Abode not in in truth because there is no truth in him when he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own for he is a liar and the father of it there is no truth in the devil anything that he tells you is a lie if the devil ever tells you something you need to put it through the lie detector test and say this is a lie I know that I listen I might have failed but I'm not a failure I wish somebody was hearing the Bible says he's the accuser of the Brethren and what he accuses you with is a lie he cannot tell you the truth when the devil says something you need to repeat back to him the truth which is the opposite you're not forgiven he doesn't love you I am forgiven he does love me you're not saved I am saved come on somebody you need to realize that not everything that you hear in your ear and feel in your spirit is truth the devil is a liar sin is a liar if you believe that clap your hands unto the Lord and thank him for the [Applause] truth but here's something worse here's something worse than the devil being a liar Jeremiah says in Jeremiah 17:9 the heart is deceitful Above All Things what Above All Things the heart is deceitful I got that one Jeremiah 179 I want them to see that one Jeremiah 17:9 the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked who can know it the heart of the problem is the problem of the heart the heart of the problem is the problem of the heart sin and Satan yes are a problem it's an issue but our real problem Jeremiah says the prophet says is on the inside in our hearts the Hebrew word that Jeremiah uses here for deceitful is very similar in definition to that of the Greek counterpart we talked about earlier the word deceitful is from the Hebrew word haab which means Sly crooked Insidious slippery deceitful this is where the name Jacob comes from isn't that what he was trickster Sly and this is what Jeremiah is saying about our hearts that our hearts are deceitful and will trick us our inward man will trick us and I know the devil's a liar I know sin is a lie but you're saying my own heart can't be trusted yep you can't trust your heart you can't trust your emotions when the Bible talks about the word heart it is the seat of all emotions grief mourning Joy pleasure all those emotions that you feel are linked to to the heart it's the central part of who you are it is who we are and all of us in the room I hope you have a heartbeat tonight and we all have this it's not just the fleshly part it is the spiritual man on the inside so this is what David says we're going to verse six again of Psalm 51 thou desires truth in the inward parts I've been hearing this in my brain and in my spirit for weeks that like this is an Overlook part of this prayer we're going to talk more about it here in just a few moments but stop and consider what he is saying here God desires truth on the inside in the hidden part that's where he wants truth the word in the phrase inward Parts is connected to another Hebrew word for intrs ints which occurs 222 times in the Old Testament which denotes the central part or organs of the Old Testament sacrifices so they would slay the Old Testament animal for a sacrifice and they would cut it open and they would put the inward parts on the Brazen altar the inals went on the altar the priest did not know the condition of the animal until he put it on the altar my God it is not until now listen you couldn't bring an animal with a spot or a blemish why because the spot or the blemish was an indicator of something being wrong on the inside and so if you were going to be on the altar there had to be something Exposed on the inals and David said you Delight Us in with truth in the inward Parts but you never know that's why so many people avoid the altar please understand these are just steps these are just steps we call this the altar but a soul many avoid the altar because it exposes what's on the inside and you'll never listen to me now you will never find Healing Deliverance Hess Holiness sanctification until you reveal what's on the inside at the altar that's the only way you're going to find Healing that's the only way you're going to find Deliverance that's the only way you're going to find forgiveness is when you open up and say Here I Am here's the inside of my life I've got to have healing and you can only get that at the I wish somebody was hearing me I know I should be teaching but I'm telling you there is something on the inside that God desires of us oh Jesus he said he Des he he Delights or desires truth that Hebrew word that he uses for desires means to take pleasure God gets great joy when there is truth in us and there is a difference between knowing truth and living truth truth is more than just a set of principles and ideas truth is what you are on the inside and that's what God Delights in doesn't Delight in Perfection Delights in honesty because we have the ability to lie to ourselves we can hide our Inner Man you hearing me we can hide who we really are with religious exercises it's easy for us to hide what we really are on the inside and that's why so many avoid the altar I don't want anyone to know what I am but here's the issue here's the issue God knows and you might fool me you might fool others I might fool you but you'll never fool the one who sees and tries the Reigns now I'm going somewhere y'all yall okay yall all right teaching teaching teaching the danger of a diseased inner life is the lure to be a hypocrite it's the lure to put on an act in Jesus's sermon in the mount Matthew 56 and 7 he warned learned about hypocrisy over and over again those who did certain acts of righteousness prayed fasted gave so they could be seen of men but their actions didn't match their inner life he said they pray to be heard they fast to be seen they give to be praised but on the inside they're diseased that should scare us when we read it that we can pray fast and give and still be broken because we can cover up who we really are with acting a certain way Jesus said this in Matthew 23:27 woe unto you scribes and Pharisees who are the Pharisees and the scribes religious do gooders new the law wanted everybody else to do the law had their certain little sect of people that you can't get in our group because we're so holy don't go to our church because you don't dress a certain way and do this and do that he said which indeed appear to be beautiful outwardly but are full of dead men's bones he said they're wied selers but on the inside of that beautiful exterior is Brokenness in the inside and let me tell you they might act like truth but really they're a lie I'm telling you right now we cannot cover up Who We Are by just going through the motions well I'm Apostolic and I'm Pentecostal that's fine but are you a Christian on the inside I wish somebody was hearing me right now come on God wants he desires he takes pleasure with truth in the inward Parts yes he oh they had their act together had their act together but they were Jesus said they were full of greed self-indulgence and wickedness they were Hypocrites the word hypocrisy in the New Testament reflects its use in Greek drama in Greek Theater a hypocrite was one who wore a mask and played a part on stage imitating the speech mannerisms and conducts of a character portrayed hypocrisy is pretending to be what you're not you can PR pretend to be a Christian and not actually be one and our churches around America are full of them well I get in trouble when I get there you can portray you can put on an act you know I've been saying this all day today from beginning of we pray at 8 or at 8:30 and we have prayer throughout the building on Sunday mornings and I've said this today I don't want to just have church I want to be the church and I'm afraid some of us know how to have church but don't know how to be the church on Monday so we know how to dress and act and raise our hands and clap our hands and do all the exercises on Sunday but then on Monday we're telling filthy jokes on Monday we're not paying our bills on Tuesday we're lying on Wednesday we're Cheating On th are you hearing me right now I'm telling you you're not the church by just showing up here on Sunday You're the church by Who You Are every day every hour every minute come on somebody our life the inward man is what God is caring about yes he cares about how we live but I'm telling you how you live will come from where you are on the inside you might be saying who cares as long as others think I'm saved look at Hebrews 3 and 13 again exhort one another daily why because you need it every day not just on Sundays and Wednesdays while is called today lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin when you are constantly trying to cover up the inward man you are s susceptible to hardening your heart talk about this in in medical terms and this is where uh even in the New Testament New Testament times they were talking about the hardening of arteries it's the same word used here that if you don't take care of yourself physically your arteries will harden and it's going to cause you trouble with your heart it's the same thing if you're constantly trying to fake your way through this and try to please everybody I'm doing this to make sure that they think that I'm saved what you're really doing is hardening your heart listen to what Thomas Watson one of my favorite Puritan writers he said this a hard heart is a dwelling for Satan as God has two places he dwells in heaven and a humble heart so the devil has two places he dwells in hell and a hard heart the danger of hypocrisy or allowing your inner life to deteriorate with lies is the hardening of your heart you may think it's hidden and covered but I'm going tell you something this is what Jesus said said in Luke 6:45 a good man out of the good Treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good and evil man out the evil Treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speak so let me tell you something if you are a hypocrite if the inward man is diseased before long you think it's covered you think no one knows how you really are before long your mouth will begin to Proclaim what you are on the inside that's why when you go to the doctor when you go to the doctor they say stick out your tongue because your tongue is an indicator if there's something wrong on the inside and so you might think you have your inner life covered up and hidden with hypocrisy you got the mask on but lust will make its way forth out of your mouth in offc colar jokes and comments hatred will spew forth from your diseased heart envy and jealousy will spill from your lips a hardened heart will keep you from true worship and devotion and turn you into a Critic you can't keep it covered for long because your heart if it will deceive you it will deceive you again and your mouth will begin to expose what you are on the inside that's why we've got to be renewed that's why we've got to have truth in the inward parts of our Lives because what you really are will come out listen to David's confession and cleansing this whole chapter man we can spend weeks in here L I got these in bullet points just listen to his his prayer have mercy on me oh God blot out my transgressions Wash Me thoroughly from my iniquity cleanse me from my sin I acknowledge my transgressions against you you alone I have sinned Purge me with hiss up wash me I shall be whiter than snow hide your face from my sins blot out my iniquities create in me a clean heart renew a right Spirit within me do not cast me away do not take your spirit from me restore to me the joy of your salvation deliver me from the guilt of Bloodshed David needed Mercy it's like he couldn't find enough words or phrases here was the poet the psalmist and he didn't have enough words to describe his sin and his need for forgiveness oh brothers and sisters many of us know that pleasure of sin is so temporary but the way hate and the guilt and the shame weighs for so much longer the pleasure so short so fleeting here's pleasure here's fulfillment and all you get is guilt shame condemnation and David says have mercy and he knows this that it has to take place in the inside here where nobody sees it here where nobody knows it but me and God can I tell you I've talked about it before and I don't mean to be mean and crude we have such a strange percep ception of repentance somebody can come up and pray ask God to forgive him and guess what he does forgives but they didn't cry they didn't get down and roll on the floor and get kleenexes and all the hankes and all the things uh this is not for you but the fruit of repentance is a change life it is the turnaround of realizing that sin that got me in this place is a lie and I can no longer accept a lie so I must be cleansed I must be washed I'm I'm coming to a to a close if musicians want to come in verse number seven following verse six he says Purge me with hisp and I shall be clean hisp was a a plant that could be found growing in the Crees of buildings and it would be bundled together and used as a brush at the first Passover of The Exodus the Lord told the people to gather some hisp dip it into the blood of the sacrificed lamb and spread it over the door of their homes David says I must be washed Purge me with is cleanse me of my guilt the blood of that lamb produced the Passover that the death angel would come and when it seen the blood it passed over them and it foreshadowed brothers and sisters a greater lamb the Lamb of God whose blood would be shed for us but we would not put it over the doors of our homes literally but we would spiritually apply his blood to our hearts Ezekiel the prophet he proclaimed that God would come and do and produce a New Covenant in which God would give new hearts and a new spirit it's the removal of the Heart of Stone and replaced with a heart that is soft and pliable where he could dwell truth brothers and sisters is not just an abstract idea I wrote a paper back when I was in school a few years ago the word of the year I think it was 2016 the word of the year was posttruth that we were living in a posttruth society that truth was uh something that really couldn't be nailed down and phrases like this of Speak Your Truth or that's not my truth that's your truth and here's my truth brothers and sisters that is not truth that is an opinion and what we've done is we have made opinions truth and opinions are what we tell ourselves when we don't want to know the truth lies are what we tell ourselves that when we don't like so when we don't like something that that is truth the fact Checker says this well that's that's that's that's outdated it's posttruth that's that might be true for you and then that's not true for me truth doesn't have a side truth is truth but it's not just Apostolic truth and Christian doctrine truth and biblical truth and we have to have that but what God Delights in you can stand to your feet what God Delights in is truth in us he wants truth in the places that nobody sees he wants honesty where we have harbored lies and deception self-justification self-righteousness The Lies We Tell ourselves I'm okay at least I didn't do what they did at least I didn't do this and I didn't do that look what they did that's not going to happen to me brothers and sisters that is lies that is a deception in the Inner Man and if we're not careful The Lies We Tell ourselves will send us to an eternity of flames what we must have is cleansing in the inner part the inward life of deception and sin must be cleansed and renewed truth brothers and sisters is a person Jesus declared I am the way the truth and the life Peter would say of him that there was no gu found in him he was he was the walking epitome of Truth the only way that you can find cleansing and healing is through Jesus to correct lies is with truth and Jesus is that truth to have new life within in the inward inals the inward man is only through Jesus David knew God desired truth in the inward Parts brother Derek can can you put verse six up again I don't want us to overlook this last line of verse six I'm closing and in the hidden part Thou shalt make me to know wisdom what is wisdom it is the opposite of foolishness this has been my prayer for my daughter I don't sometimes you just don't know what to pray or how to pray so you just pray and this is what I've been [Music] praying let her be able to discern between good and evil let her be able to discern between right and wrong let her be able to discern between wisdom and foolishness but Lord give her the ability to choose wisdom good and that which is right every time we need some discernment to choose wisdom wisdom wisdom is the application of knowledge it is putting information and knowledge to work it's not enough listen to me now I'm come on out singers it it it's not enough to say amen I believe in one God Jesus name I believe in Holiness I believe in baptism in Jesus name I believe in all that and then you go out there and you live like an [Music] atheist Christian atheist I believe in him but I don't [Music] pray I believe his word is truth but I don't read it I believe the church is where we can find community and healing and purpose and fillment but I only come when I feel like it we need some wisdom we need to apply what we know it's not enough just to hear it information but there has to be some transformation with the information we are an information overload in our world and some of the information that we feed ourselves is our own deceitful heart we hear the devil and we hear ourselves as constantly playing this soundtrack of you're a loser and you're a failure and you're not forgiven and you're not really saved and you're a fake and you're a phony and you're a hypocrite and you hear this over and over and over and over again and you start to believe it but we need some truth we need some truth we need the sword of the spirit which is the word of God and it can Pierce and divide and it can discern our inward man would you lift up your hands right now I want you to know that there is some healing here but you're going to have to be honest with yourself there is some Deliverance here there is some forgiveness here for you tonight but you got to come to an altar and you got to open up yourself I wonder if somebody is bold enough somebody is courageous enough somebody is is is honest enough to say you know what I need some truth in the inward Parts I don't want to be a hypocrite I don't want to live lies I don't want to try to cover up who I am on the inside but I need some healing come on maybe you're dealing with some greed maybe you're dealing with some lust maybe you're dealing with some jealousy and some hatred maybe you're you're dealing with some resentment maybe you're dealing with some stuff on the inside and the Lord says I I'll heal you but you got to be honest with yourself and you got to be honest with me he knows it he sees it you can't keep it covered you can't keep it hidden he knows it but he Delights he takes pleasure in truth come on but I want you to cast yourself upon him and say Lord have mercy upon me blot out my transgressions oh God cleanse me oh God take the hiss up of your blood oh God and begin to apply it to the inward part of my life come on would you lift up your hearts come on there is forgiveness he is faithful and just to forgive us of all of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness it's here come on it's here would you lift up your Voice come on Lord on the inside here at the altar in the inside where nobody else can see it Lord here's the thing that I need healing from this is what I need forgiveness of I need Deliverance here come on there's no sense in lieing to yourself there's no sense in liying to yourself he Delights with truth he Delights in truth in the inward man but make me to know wisdom in the hidden part oh yes come on Brother come on sister there is healing there is truth here there is healing there is cleansing here oh oh yes all I am oh yes woring you come on there's mercy
