Elijah was a man look at that Elijah was a man with a nature like ours and he prayed I want to preach to you tonight just for a few moments a man like us a man like us once you put your Bibles down let's pray one more time father we thank you for your word and what words we heard today what refreshing words today about your name revelatory words about your name but I pray that the sea would be to the sower tonight and it would be bread to the eater that it would bring forth nourishment to our spirit into our lives that we might see in ourselves I see ourselves in the scripture we might find comfort in these things and I pray that you would Inspire us o God to seek and to search after you in Jesus name we pray and everyone said amen won't you clap your hands again tonight come on somebody give him a praise you've yet to give him amen you can be seated a man like us a man Like Us chapters 11 through 16 of First Kings could be considered some of the most dismal sections in all of scripture despite being renowned as the wisest person in the world this section records that Solomon became a complete fool rehoboam his son's stubbornness leads the division of Israel's Kingdom jeroboam takes power over 10 of Israel's tribes and encourages the worship of bulls unfortunately these subsequent Kings of Israel are not any better than jirborum Omri is known as the Crown Prince of evil and is surpassed in wickedness only by his son Ahab Ahab marries a woman named Jezebel orders the rebuilding of Jericho and continues to lead Israel down the path of Baal worship further plunging them into chaos and turmoil and then suddenly suddenly from the darkness comes a blazing light Elijah walks on the stage of Israel's history like a crash of thunder only to disappear in a whirlwind literally the writer of Kings doesn't give Elijah a formal introduction he just shows up readers are left with a thousand questions like this where did he go to Seminary what is his Twitter handle how many followers does he have what books has he written does he have a podcast is he married what about children who are his friends what conferences has he preached how did he meet Ahab and where in the world did he get that outfit the author doesn't provide answers to these crucial questions about it Elijah we only know that he's from Gilead a mountainous and rugged region located east of the Jordan River the people of Gilead were known for their rough and tough nature living in simple Villages and raising sheep they were accustomed to a solitary life dressed in camel hair it's clear why Elijah was unique in Israel he didn't fit in with the typical appearance and the behavior of the people at that time why is it important for us to take notice of the abruptness of Elijah's Ministry I believe the answer is this the great movement of Israel and the great movement of evil in Israel made it seem as if Darkness would prevail the majority of people were worshiping Baal and neglecting the true God but we must be sure that God in unexpected places and times has secretly prepared a counter movement God can raise men and women out of nowhere Elijah's life stands out like a diamond lying upon a black velvet but like any diamond it has to be mined cut and molded into the dazzling wonder it is part of Elijah's preparation was in the school of loneliness we don't like to be alone do we we don't like to be alone physically we don't like to be alone digitally we have to be with people swiping messaging texting something we've got to be with somebody but Elijah's Ministry was great I believe was because he spent time alone with God unlike other Heroes of the Old and New Testaments he worked alone he didn't have the support of a wife family friends or Associates he appears by himself and disappears by himself he was educated in the desert and trained in solitude I've said it before and it Bears repeating if a man is to be much for God then he must be much with God I dare say during The Bleak times we currently live in God is Raising men and women who will be much for God because they have spent much time with God and like Elijah you don't have to live your life everywhere in public you don't have to post everything that comes to your mind you don't have to post every place you are during the day sometimes we need to learn how to get alone and spend private time with God if we're going to be much for God we're going to have to be people who spend time with God no you're not hearing me this evening when I'm thinking of Elijah's Solitude it reminds us of a time when we used to develop photos in the dark room before digital technology you remember that I was in high school I think it was my senior year and I took photography class and we didn't have digital cameras back in those olden days we had film you don't even know what film is we had film and you'd have to take film and you have to load it into this little this little canister and then you would load it in there and you would get it in a solution let it sit there for a little while shake it around a little bit then you would take it into the dark room and you take the film out in the dark room and allow the photo that you had taken days and weeks before and allow it to develop I want to tell you the most significant Ministries are developed in private they're in times of solitary prayer and bible study I'm telling you the greatest Ministries are those who have learned how to spend time alone with God praying with people on Wednesdays and Sunday is great but I'm telling you there's something powerful about a people who can get along with God in prayer and his word and just spend time in his presence when you do that I wish somebody was helping me right now I'm talking about a man like us if God is going to use people like us we're going to have to be people like Elijah where is the Lord God of Elijah well where is the elizas of the Lord God where are they if we're going to be great we have to spend great time with God someone say Amen Elijah appeared when spiritual Darkness was prevalent in the Northern Kingdom of Israel in First Kings 17 he fearlessly confronted King Ahab and his wife Queen Jezebel who were both Wicked Elijah boldly declared as a drought on the land which was a direct challenge to the false gods of Baal and ashra this act demonstrated that the one true God held all power and authority in the times of the drought that he prayed for Elijah was miraculously provided for by God LED Elijah to the brook of cherith where Ravens brought him bread and meat twice a day when the brook eventually dried up God directed Elijah to a widow in Zarephath a place struck with famine here we witnessed one of the most remarkable Miracles as God multiply the meager resources of a widow ensuring that her flower and oil never ran out these Supernatural acts of provision demonstrate God's faithfulness to his man and one of the most notable moments in the ministry of Elijah is when he faced off with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel First Kings tells us this story in chapter 18 Elijah boldly challenged them to a contest with each side calling upon their respective Gods to ignite a fire upon their sacrifice the prophets of Baal were unsuccessful but yet Elijah James said that he prayed a man prayed a man challenged these evil men and yet he prayed he prayed that God would send fire down in public can I tell you something you can't call down fire in public until you've learned how to call fire down in private [Applause] I wish to preach to some preachers in the house tonight don't get up here and try to preach fire and brimstone if it's been nothing but the first church of the Frigidaire in your prayer closet come on somebody if we're going to be a men of fire and women of fire we need to be alone igniting fire in our prayer claws that seeking after the face of God if we want great public Ministries we're going to have to have great private Ministries you're going to have to learn how to pray in private oh come on somebody hear me right now if you want to pray the prayer of faith in public learn how to pray the prayer of faith in private when you're going through some stuff and you pray the prayer of faith when no one's around and you start speaking in tongues and you call down fire I'm talking about a man a man like us someone say Amen he called down fire he shut up the heavens then he opened up the heavens he prayed down fire and he says all right now worship the true God of Israel and you think a man like this a successful man like this a spiritual man like this could never have any loaves could never experience any doubts or unbelief or any discouragement or frustrations And yet when Ahab the king went back to Jezebel and told her of what Elijah did she got on Facebook slid into his DMs and she said I'm going to kill you she didn't say that to his face she said it in a letter her threatening words scare the prophet and made him doubt what he was doing causing him to lose Faith momentarily he became so fearful he fled Into the Wilderness he was exhausted and discouraged and even requested to die under a juniper tree this is a man just one or two chapters before pray down fire and one little text message what had happened well he it caused him to want to throw in the towel and give it all up you're not hearing me I'm talking about a man like us it was during this vulnerable moment that an angel of the Lord provided him with food and water strengthening him for the journey ahead and he goes to Mount Horeb also known as Mount Sinai and there brothers and sisters he encounters God in his discouragement if First Kings 18 is a picture of the High Times of the Christian Life First Kings 19 is a picture of the low times in the Christian Life his vulnerability drove him to discouragement it drove him to his God he went to that mountain that once thundered fire and a booming voice for a man named Moses and he comes Waiting for God to speak to him in the Thunder and in the fire and in all of the all of the glory that he had read about but yet God wasn't in any of that God came to his discouraged man with a whisper sometimes God have mercy sometimes God will Thunder but when you're discouraged he'll whisper there are times when you need confront and then there are times when you need God to comfort God have mercy there are times when he comes in the fire there are times when he comes with the Thunder but then there are times when you're hurting and you're discouraged and you're broken and you're ready to throw in the towel and he's not in the fire he's not in the Thunder but he comes to you in a whisper [Applause] but he doesn't chide him he doesn't rebuke him all he does is ask him a question what are you doing here Elijah God have mercy what are you doing here Elijah he didn't rebuke him for his discouragement he didn't rebuke him for being a man he didn't rebuke him for wanting to throw in the towel God knew Elijah's struggles and doubts yet he desired to draw close to him I think we heard it this morning that God isn't put off by our discouragement and our Brokenness instead he is attracted to it and he shows up and says what can I do for you here you're not hearing me oh he comes close to us come on you can't hear a whisper 50 feet away you hear a whisper when he draws near he draws near his discouraged and frustrated prophet and he says I'll tell you what Elijah I've heard your complains I heard your frustration you're the only one who lives for me I get it but you're wrong anybody ever felt like that and I'm the only one God who loves you I'm the only one who's gonna live for you why God you are so blessed to have me and only me and God said I've got things that you don't even know about you know what because I did it for you I found you out in the middle of nowhere and I've got all kinds of other men and women who've not bowed down to Baal furthermore I'll tell you about a young man by the number by the name of Elisha he you will anoint to follow after your footsteps and he Comforts the man of God and he brings he brings life back to him to go another day sometimes brothers and sisters all it takes is a whisper all it takes is the still Small Voice in the middle of the night from a Heavenly place to get you to go another day I wish somebody would hear me right now it might not be a thundering conference sermon it might not be a thundering camp meeting night service it might be in the middle of the night that the Lord God visits you with a whisper to get you through another day to get you to wake up another morning to face your trouble and say come on we're not done yet we still got to where I wish somebody was hearing me come on I'm telling you he doesn't want you to throw in the towel he might just visit you tonight in your prayer room he might visit you tonight in the altar he might visit you tomorrow morning when you wake up in the middle in the darkness he comes and says what are you doing here he wants to comfort you whoo you might be asking yourself this if you haven't you will one of these days can someone as powerful as Elisha who wasn't afraid of the king of Israel wasn't afraid of the prophets of Baal wasn't overcome with worry whether God was going to answer by fire or not he wasn't intimidated by a drought but it was one letter One Note one doctor's report one text message one phone call one little meeting in the boss's office one little encounter with a family member all of a sudden you want to take out your towel and throw it in I'm telling you right now you can face all kinds of great things in your life and not be overwhelmed but you don't know what could overcome your spirit to cause you discouragement and frustration and willingness to quit I'm telling somebody right now don't quit don't throw in the towel it's not worth it you can face another day he can encourage you he can If He Did It Before come on if he can send fire down from heaven he can encourage you if he can shut up the Heavens he can encourage you if he can open up the Heavens he can come and comfort you somebody say Amen a man like us it might be hard for us to understand but James says Elijah was a man like us he seems anything other than ordinary doesn't he he doesn't seem like he's from this world but can I tell you something this evening God calls ordinary men and women to do extraordinary things we might be tempted to look at Elijah and think like he's some other worldly being anything other than human perhaps we think Elijah has a different type of flesh and blood maybe God has given him some other type of brain or heart amen like Elijah who does extraordinary exploits has to be anything other than like me that's how we view people is and who are spiritual we think people who are spiritual those that God uses mightily we just surmise that they are living in the clouds every day having dinner with angels all the while it must be nice to be able to do all that spiritual stuff we have to get up go to work do the laundry raise kids change diapers pay bills change flat tires or mow the yard you don't feel like that must be nice how you have all that time visit with angels all day must be nice having a prayer Closet in your life being able to go on there and talk to Jesus I've got to go do the dishes we might be led to believe that men and women greatly use of God don't have bad days or struggle or sin please sit down please chill out for a second I know this is so exciting for you but to be great for God doesn't mean that every day is great oh y'all there yes it's a great day to have a great day but not every day is great and just because every day is not great does not mean you're not spiritual and just because you're not soaring with the Eagles sometimes you're hanging out with turkeys does not mean you're not a successful Christian trying to encourage somebody today about a man like us how can I relate to somebody who can open up the heavens and close the heavens I can barely open the blinds most most days how can I relate to somebody who can look at false prophets and tell them I dare you to pray down fire how can I relate to somebody like that I'll tell you how James said he was a man like us and yet he prayed can I tell you something tonight that God is not looking for some super spiritual person he is looking for an ordinary person a normal person who says you know what I don't feel good but I'm gonna pray I don't feel like faith today but I'm going to be faithful to him anyway I wish somebody was helping me right now I may not feel like going to church but I'm going to go come on I'm going to go and lift up my hands I'm going to go and give him praise I may not feel like don't base your spiritual success on how you feel for the righteous shall live by their faith not their feelings I am afraid brothers and sisters that we have done the Pentecostal movement of great disservice by trying to get people to live like Angels when God has called us to be humans he did not come to redeem Angels he came to redeem human people with bad days and good days and discouragement and frustrations he came to say somebody like me and you a man like us somebody somebody say Amen [Applause] praying praying praying praying when you're discouraged praying when you feel the darkness of depression praying praying when the heavens are shut up Pray when the heavens are open God is looking for weak prayer human prayer and discourage prayer you know why he's just looking for somebody to show up and pray oh how do you pray he says it the fervent effectual prayer of a righteous man avails much and then his example is vulnerable Elijah discouraged easily frustrated Elijah he's saying listen I don't want you to be discouraged with the thought of prayer I want you to be encouraged by a life that could also be very frail and human he says confess your sins your faults one to another pray the prayer of faith how can I do that by being you you don't have to Shake Yourself into some type of frenzy brother Nate do you speak in tongues every time you go to pray no you're Pentecostal yes I'm Pentecostal I'm also a child of God and when I go to him in prayer sometimes I speak in tongues and sometimes I don't Paul said I am I wish you would speak in tongues he said I speak in tongues more than you all but he said he also need to learn how to pray with the spirit and pray with understanding you're not hearing me I'm telling you something right now God is raising up some people with some understanding who understand that it's not based upon my feelings it's based upon my faith and if I will go and pray it doesn't matter if I speak in tongues that day or not I might tomorrow but what I'm going to do right now is spend time with him he'll draw close to me sometimes it's fire sometimes it's rain sometimes it do whisper but you got to be there for him to speak to you [Applause] I know this is not popular in Pentecostal movements but I'm I'm telling you something it's real it's real God is not looking for perfect and pretty prayer he's looking for faithful and consistent prayer if you'll be consistent to prayer he'll show up if you'll make an appointment with him every day he's not going to be like some doctors who keep you in the waiting room if you've got an appointment with him he will show up I don't know what to say here's how here's how he gave us a way to pray our father I got this little girl I just way off my notes right now I got this little girl who lives with me she doesn't like me to use her name so I just call the girl that lives with me she lives and we we brought her home and it turned our world upside down fell in love with her do anything for her and the first thing we try to do is put her in a crib and she cried in the middle of the night and Ashley's hitting me get her get her I said what is her name I don't even know what this child's name is I hadn't slept in days what is this child where'd it come from finally we got her on a routine in the crib and then all of a sudden she slipped out of that routine and started crying and I told Ashley this I said somebody's got to sleep around here put her in this bed and that's where she has been this girl who lives with me right in the middle of us and this is what would happen he used to she used to cry out in the middle of the night Bobby what my Bobby on her bottle so I had the bottle and I'd get it and give it to her until she fell back to sleep take the bottle put it back on the nightstand fall back asleep and we all slept safely and nicely in the night then I started getting a little older I could get up and it was before her and and Ashley I put the pillow next to her real tight and I'd go and get ready I supposed to preach on a Sunday morning and I I thought I'm gonna go study and pray a little bit and look over my notes got done showering and no combing my hair and all the things and no and you don't believe me do you okay and uh and I heard that little girl hollering out Daddy Daddy brothers and sisters I didn't care if I was preaching at the greatest conference in the world I put my Bible down I put my notes down and I went and I got my little girl I swooped her up into my arms and I gave her that drink I gave her that bottle and I comforted her until she fell asleep that's why when Jesus said when you pray pray our father when you have his attention as a father he says all right child what do you need he comes down oh you're not hearing me I'm telling you about prayer right now all you got to do is pray like a child come to him and say father I don't have a pretty prayer today I don't have an eloquent prayer today but I've got a need I need healing I need Deliverance I need a financial miracle I need help on the job I need help with my children and your father who is in heaven will come down and swoop you up [Applause] I'm talking about prayer tonight come on musicians get ready prayer a man like us a man who can get discouraged a man who can get who can get so frustrated that he's even willing to leave it all behind I'm talking about a man James said if you want fervent effectual prayer realize you don't have to be some some type of supernatural being just be a man just be a human you know Supernatural is made up of two words super and natural we like the super part and that's the god part don't we God is going to meet us with a supernatural tonight a supernatural the super super divine power super but don't overlook that second part natural God shows up with the super when we in our natural will learn how to pray in faith not based on feeling not based upon what we're going through but just saying Jesus here I am I don't have an eloquent prayer but I've got a natural prayer and all of a sudden the super and the natural come together prayer is Heaven and Earth coming together and he gets his will be done a man like us I'm drawn to a close but I want you to understand something tonight God wants to raise up some people who will learn how to pray and to seek after him a man like us you know who else was a man like us Jesus I love to hear Oneness of the godhead priest the Divinity the deity of Jesus but Jesus was not only God In the Flesh he was man like us he wasn't 50 percent God and 50 percent man he was 100 percent God and one hundred percent man he experienced the physical limitations and emotions that come along with being human he felt thirst hunger and tiredness and even cried and got angry rather than relying upon supernatural abilities to serve himself he used it to serve others you know what he did when he had to go somewhere he didn't fly he didn't transport himself there you know what he did a man like us he walked he walked to his destinations furthermore he did all the things and a natural man would do but yet he was a man like us now the book of Hebrews go ahead and come on now I'm I'm almost done stand your feet now the book of Hebrews highlights the supremacy of Christ over the figures locations and rituals of the Old Testament one of the ways in which he surpasses them is by serving as a high priest who can empathize with our weaknesses Hebrews 4 and 15 says for we have not and high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities but was in all points tempted like as we are yet without sin he understands our weaknesses because he's a man just like us he can relate to how we feel which is why he's such an effective high priest similarly when a pastor can understand and relate to the issues of the church his ministry is most effective because he's a man like us and again we see this picture of Christ's Humanity in Hebrews if you can pull up Hebrews 5 and 7. [Music] I love this you need to highlight this in your Bible underline it when someone asks you who's Jesus praying to in the garden when they say is that God crying out to God is he inferior to the father go pull up Hebrews 5 and 7. who in the days days of his flesh you didn't hear me you didn't see it look at it again who in the days of his flesh when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death and he was heard and that he feared who is Jesus praying to when he's in the garden I'll tell you who he's praying to he's praying to his father in the days of his flesh when he was faced with suffering and trial and temptation his flesh a man like us prayed when Jesus Christ who is God in flesh he stopped [Music] and he prayed in the garden who was he praying to this wasn't some schizophrenic moment no no this was the man Christ Jesus for there's one mediator between God and Men the man Christ Jesus in the days of his flesh he cried out with prayer and he gave us an example that even Jesus Christ felt like giving up [Music] what do you do when you feel like giving up you pray when you feel frustrated and overcome and overwhelmed with troubles and anxiety and worry and fear you pray doesn't have to be an eloquent prayer it doesn't have to be a perfect pretty prayer it just has to be a [Music] prayer is this and I'm done prayer is recognizing your inability and seeing God's capability when you realize you've come to the end of your ability that's when he steps in and says I'll take over from here do you feel discouraged do you feel like giving up do you feel like it's just one thing after another the Bible says Paul writes us from Faith to Faith sometimes it feels like from crisis to crisis I want to tell you something you need to pray won't you lift up your hands right now I'll be an encouragement to somebody that being spiritual doesn't feel like being something other than a human and realizing that it's Faith working in his ability to meet your need it's crying out to him as your father it's calling out unto him as your creator realizing he owns the cattle on a thousand hills that that he's the great physician that he's the Prince of Peace that well he's whatever I need as Pastor Anthony said today all I've got to do as a human as a man as a woman is cry out to him with fervent effectual prayer is there anybody who needs healing come and pray is there anybody who needs forgiveness come and pray that's what James said come on if anybody needs some encouragement come and pray if somebody need just a little bit of a whisper I don't need fire I don't need Thunder I just need a whisper I need some comfort I need some comfort right now I need some comfort I need him to be my comfort I need him to be my Advocate my helper come on I don't need fire and thunder cloudy Great Signs I just need him to come and comfort if I'm discouraged if I feel like giving up Elijah felt that way too Jesus felt that way pray come on with your prayers would you pray [Music] oh yes goodness come on it's coming it's coming just pray you don't have to feel it just faith it you may not feel anything but just talk to him come on come on Elijah come on Elijah come on Elijah just pray just pray [Applause] [Music] say hallelujah [Music] come on you're not alone he can relate to you he can relate to your situation [Applause] [Music] sing Happy [Music] birthday [Music] just listen just listen for a second James said one translation sent like this our interview suffering hardships you should pray are any of you happy you should sing praises are any of you sick you should call for the Elders of the church to come and pray over you anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord confins to each other and pray for each other there's times for private prayer and then there's time for communal prayer and I wonder if you would link up with somebody right now maybe you need something maybe you need healing it's okay to tell them hey this is what I need right now this is what I'm facing right come on open up your mouth they don't know how to pray effectually if they don't know how to pray effectively in order to pray effectively they gotta know what to pray for is there any sick among you let them pray is anybody need forgiveness let them pray does anybody need some comfort let them pray but pray with your brother and your sister right now encourage one another encourage one another are you facing hardships tell somebody pray for me that's okay it shows humility it shows that you are humbling yourself come on he draws near to the humble but he resists the proud come on don't be too proud to ask somebody to pray for you to encourage you to lay their hands upon you pray the prayer of faith pray the prayer of faith not the prayer of feeling the prayer of faith and you shall recover you shall recover you shall be forgiven [Music] oh yes [Music] your spirit lives with me come on victories in the house [Music] [Music] I'm not alone [Music] I am not alone foreign [Music] would you lift up your hands and to say I love you Jesus I love you Jesus [Music] I wanna I wanna give you a call to action tonight [Music] I want you to go home with something not just a sermon but I want you to go home with some application here's what I want you to do right now maybe for the rest of the night I want you to think about how you can schedule time in prayer tomorrow I'm not an early riser are you late are you a a night owl pray at night do you have a long lunch pray at lunch you know we over complicate prayer sometimes but if you'll take time tonight get in your get in your schedule and say I'm making an appointment with Jesus I'm making an appointment with him just like you would a doctor just like he would a liar just like you would your accountant say I'm making an appointment tomorrow and I'm going to keep it for me it's early in the morning I like early prayer I believe because if I don't do it later if I don't do it early I know I won't do it later I do it first things first he wants our first fruits not our leftover but some people like to do it at night that's for you to figure out but make an appointment will you do that make an appointment with Jesus you know what's going to happen he's going to show up he's not going to be late he's gonna be right on time let's have a little talk with Jesus tomorrow and then do it the next day and then do it the next day and then do it the next day it doesn't have to be an hour long but just try just try give somebody a high five and tell them he was a man and like us a woman like you come on we're gonna make it we're gonna make it Hallelujah
