anybody have this book anybody reading it huh you're reading it is it convicted you very good it will my wife sits there and all i hear in that corner what she's reading is hmm anybody else anybody else feeling the same thing okay you need to you need to every once in a while i give you a reference let me tell you something this is a good one okay you need to they'll be good for you we are going to pick up last week anybody remember what we talked about sin nacism being cynical uh that was our first one this book is didn't see it coming it's seven great challenges that everyone experiences but nobody expects it last week we we got into the first part of that book um talking about becoming cynical what's that mean just as an overview anybody remember untrusting what is it okay everybody's got an angle yeah you know there you go that's what that's about tonight you are more than welcome if you feel like you need to if you need to get out of your chair any time during this lesson tonight and come stand on the carpet or on this stage to get out of the lava tonight's session's on compromise didn't see it coming so you're welcome to or if you want to interrupt my lesson and come screaming down here and just falling on your face you know just some of you are probably going to want to um let's see who can help me herb would you help me please i knew you would isaac come help him man there's pens here and there's handouts and don't be what are you taking all night right there's 10 points on this particular lesson just like please make all the notes you want to on this this is for you to take with you i realize we could do this digitally but most of you might not so this way at least you have a paper and a pen in your hand right you can act like it you wrinkle it once in a while chest you know that way people are like oh they're writing something over there compromise anybody got a definition for compromise the act of compromising who's got a phone syria go who's got it izzy come on man help me out what's it mean compromise to give in all right we'll take it what else easy don't let me down i'm waiting on your brother read loud a concession each side they come to a compromise is there another definition you have to do this izzy do you do it like that there you go okay any more that pen is not going to help you a cop it's okay a compromise what does it mean to compromise something i'll give you a minute to think about it thank you izzy for using sister siri compromise let me ask it this way has anyone here ever compromised on something why are you all shaking your heads up and down not a spiritual one in here yeah some of y'all just y'all some of y'all went into that you're stuck you didn't want to do this right all right compromise again this is to help us the the theme for this month is building for the future we agree but to do that i really feel compelled we have to look at some things that we've come through come to we need to analyze those and we need to look at them so to build for the future last week we talked about becoming cynical if you can't get rid of that attitude you're going to have a hard time building for the future agreed compromise is the next one number one do you ever hear from god do you ever hear from god all right think about it do you ever hear from god second part of that how how sam your wife boy aren't you glad she's extra spiritual i was gonna point to mine but yeah it's okay how did you hear how do you hear from god preaching preached word certainly someone else from the word of god the bible certainly someone else in praying in the spirit very good someone else how do you hear from god do what thoughts and impressions exactly someone else a sign yeah yeah okay i think all of us understand the principle here is that you can hear from god agreed and by your examples you it can be done in various ways some folk quite honestly are waiting to hear from god when the heavens roll back and the scroll opens and the voice of god speaks and there's no other way to deny it it is actually the audible voice of god but for a lot of people they don't really hear the audible voice of god they hear unctions and feel directions they the word comes to them hang on to me just a moment if you do hear from god then your source of information can come from it may not always but it can come from the god of all of creation agreed have you ever thought you heard from god but it wasn't him what's that called late night pizza delusion yeah because sometimes we want to be spiritual don't we we we want to be close to god and so we reach we stretch we can see the mother mary in a piece of toast and that comes from somebody who desires to see god or or or the cloud that came overhead and lasted 30 seconds and then disappeared that was a cross with jesus-ish on it because that's how they want to hear from god hang on to me number two what are what do others say about your character these two are going to connect in just a minute what do people say about your character does anybody have a character is anyone a character okay here we go tell me what's the definition of character who you are when no one's looking or when they are it's your attributes we agree it's how you think how you present it's it's how you were raised it's it's how you you kind of process information it's how you interact with others it it it demonstrates your character how many in here have a job don't be embarrassed raise your hand i know some people are embarrassed to have work on your job would you rather work with somebody that's of character or not it's fun to work with somebody that's a that that's a character huh it's fun to work with somebody that their character is very negative immoral isn't it you know that co-worker don't don't i know you can think of their name right now that person you just soon not be around because they just kind of give you the ebgbs and he's like you know what that's just not a food that's just not a good thing because their character has flaws in it here's something what others say about your character and here's the question what does that matter to you what people think about you does it matter does it i mean we all like to say sure i don't care what they say don't we we all want to say that well they don't bother me well the truth is sometimes it does bother you especially if they're right here's the thing we're going to tonight can you hear from god yes if you can hear from god what god is saying to you many times is he is helping you with your character with who you are with what you do with how you interact with the things that you say with the way you are in in by yourself or in a crowd and that's how god speaks now if it doesn't matter to you what people say about your character then guess what it probably then doesn't matter to you what god is saying about your character now there are some people that are just going to be negative nellie's all the time agreed we know some of them and there's some folk that we have learned through experience you know what they would complain if jesus came and multiplied everything in their house 30 times over they would complain that it wasn't 31 times huh hang on to me we're talking about compromise tonight number three turn your paper over if you would the paper that that you got think about this on the back of your paper the top left corner put a number one or number three for me i'm sorry number three that's what i want you to write i want you to think about it who will attend your funeral who do you think will attend your funeral i don't want the whole list okay but who do you think will attend your funeral here's the second part of that on that same number three there what do you think they were going to say about you at that funeral oh they were a character i don't know who will attend your funeral and what do you think they'll say about you at that funeral now while you're writing that for some of you younger folk in here you you can't really think in in these terms of funeral it just it just kind of gross because you want to live like a really long time like you know 100 or like old as pastor 50 something old i mean not as old as others in this room but you know old i didn't say anything i didn't i was i was looking at dylan i learned this quite honestly this particular statement i learned firsthand experience i did and i'm sure that i've told you all this but i'm going to repeat a portion of it tonight my dad passed away at age 47. i was 22. my wife and i were soon to marry and he passed away that's young isn't it at his funeral uh if i recall they had to open up both there was a funeral home that had three parlors in it so they could do multiple services that open all the parlors up for the people that came to my dad's funeral the line the possession possessed procession that went to the graveside the officers commented when they finally caught up there was over 100 plus cars that drove that route that day now i don't mind telling you i doron i was set back by that i didn't realize that about my dad i did i think he was a good guy you know but to have that kind of an impact now first of all he's young so all of his peers are still alive most of them you know it's different to go to an 85 or 90 year old funeral and there's three people because all their peers have pretty much passed away you know but at that funeral at my dad's funeral i'll just say this i learned a lot about the value of the life of a person when i watched my dad was the first sergeant air national guard out of nashville and when they came in they volunteered to do the color guard for his funeral his commander colonel morton volunteered to be the officer in charge those guys aren't trained to do funerals but his guys wanted to do it i thought that was cool i didn't think much of it at the time of course i'm heartbroken and but i look back aft at it years later and i see all of this unfold in my mind i'm like wow the value of a life i watched those men go up to the casket to view my dad before they came and sat on the front row and they all stopped at his cask getting saluted no not supposed to salute an nco but they did it out of respect i'm sitting there looking at this the value going wow life the last one that went up there was a good friend of my dad's and bill worked at the va hospital that my dad worked at when he passed away bill stopped saluted hand down stepped up to the casket and bent over and kissed my dad on his forehead the value of life i saw that the reason that that sticks out to me is because i learned then what i tried to understand even to this day things matter a smile matters i recall they had like three vans to take the flowers out to the graveside and almost all of the wreaths and stuff had smiley written on that's what they call dad i didn't know that till i saw these here's my point who will be at your funeral i am 990 certain my dad would not have thought that about himself he would not have said at age 47 i'll die next week and there'll be two 300 people there they'll have all these flowers i can almost assure you he didn't even think of that you know what he thought i hope my family's okay when he when he when he got sick he all of us kids were in the room with him hospital room you know my regret what's that dad i wish i hadn't cut the grass so much huh i was worried about the grass more than spending time with y'all character so guess what i haven't cut grass hands and i'm joking my dad would laugh at that on the same on the back of your paper there right number four the value of a person can you write on the back of your paper there in one sentence an overview of your life one sentence any english teachers what does a sentence have to have subject verb fit so at least have two words in your sentence what is a sentence that's challenging isn't it at best uh let's see sentence for my life all that and a box of cracker jacks y'all y'all don't believe it okay i have to come up with another one um come on what's one sentence that describes your life that's a challenge isn't it let me ask you this when i was putting together this lesson uh i wrote this this question down or this state write it right uh one sentence your life i've i've tried that for my wife and my kids what if i had one sentence for my wife or one sentence for my daughter or my son you know for my mom it'd be easy she did the best she could you know that's hard here's the thing here's the thing i asked you a moment ago who will attend your funeral what do you think they'll say about it and about you but then on number four is if you had to write an overview of your life in one sentence that's great challenge to do because you know what all's going on in your life right now and if i asked you today to write you'd write this and if i ask you to write it next week you would probably write something different because you think that it always changes friend of mine the character of a man never leaves him it might get better or worse but it's still his character let's go to the scripture and look at something here romans chapter 7. anybody have a bible tonight romans chapter 7. all right i gotta oh that's another verse now i gotta get my glasses out y'all gonna know i'm old verse 14. all right this is probably everybody's funnest most bestest verses to read for we know that the law is spiritual it may say spiritual the law is spiritual but everybody say i am carnal sold under sin here it is for that which i do i allow not for what i would that do i not but what i hate that do i if then i do that which i would not i consent unto the law that it is good now then it is no more i that do it but sin that dwelleth in me for i know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing you all okay for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good i find not verse 19 for the good that i for the good that i would i do not but the evil which i would not that i do now if i do that i would not it is no more i that do it but sin that dwelleth in me i find then a law that when i would do good evil is present with me for i delight in the law of god after the inward man but i see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members oh wretched man that i am who shall deliver me from the body of this death i thank god through jesus christ our lord so then with the mind i myself serve the law of god but with the flesh the law of sin does anybody understand what paul's saying to the church at rome what's that it's a fight i want to i would but i don't that i want to do i can't do because i want to do and i do the other and therefore i do what i do and i don't do the other that i should do and everything in him here's there's the crux of compromise you might want to make some notes on this one the crux of compromise your mind your body your carnal man your flesh has a desire agreed but because you're born again you now have a spiritual desire has anybody ever found a weakness in your carnal flesh and you fix it by saying you know what i'm going to do tomorrow i'm going to get up early and pray an hour fix this so the next morning you get up 30 minutes late but you meant to do good so that five minutes that you finally get in to pray guess what you feel good about it because at least you thought of it it was probably those five minutes were more than the five minutes the day before what's going on in you man i have solved some of the greatest some of the greatest battles in my life i have solved them by making commitments to god but they never went away because i didn't follow through i wanted to and i knew i probably should but when it came down to getting the flesh under subjection to do so guess what am i am i the only one being honest here i know y'all are probably way past all this and y'all are spiritual you float but i know that's probably not true because i don't hear any angels wings fluttering in here so i don't hear any halos glistening paul knows that about humanity and he's writing to the church and he's telling them listen to me there's a battle that goes on there's a war that happens there's a flesh and a and a spiritual there's a a carnality and there's a a spiritual thing happening i want to do right but i have to battle that and i know what i should do that i don't do even though i know it but because i know it i have to somehow then wrap my mind around the reality that if i don't do it although i know it is that sin or not because then when i pray the battle is lord do i pray for forgiveness of that because i know i should have done that but i didn't do it how many has ever prayed that general holy ghost overview prayer god bless everybody and forgive all the sin and bless the food amen huh now the reason that i use this particular verse these verses of scripture tonight is for this compromise can sneak up on you you can establish within yourself guidelines parameters convictions if you will whatever you want to call them and you stick to those but then something changes now i will say this there are things that a new convert does that an old saint might not do for an example a new convert that's young they may have been very accustomed to going out to nightclubs and now they decide not to i dare say an elder saints probably not much tempted by a nightclub because they had to be out after dark and that's they get nervous about that you know what i'm saying so they're probably not going to be there when you have children in the home my wife and i found this to be true we set guidelines when our children were at home and many times we established those for our children because of that it kept us connected to them but now that our children are gone guess what we may or may not have that same one but we may do it differently is anybody here all you young folk in here do you know how to pray you know any of y'all young folk know how to pray you know how to pray you gotta pray you can get on your knees and just pray and course cry and squall before god huh wait you get older and you can't hardly get your knees on the rug brother roger reach for me but i need some help up here you know you're all you're all like now lord i'm you know i'm into that hour of prayer real easy i got 20 minutes getting there and come on when i'm done dylan i'm like oh lord jesus i don't know what i was thinking i'm about to crawl over here that chair's higher yeah you young folks don't get it because you can just flop down and think nothing of it you know but i now got to think of things now hang on to me the fact of the matter is this as you grow and mature you learn very carefully the grace and the mercies of god work at every stage and every level of your life and you make adjustments to those things it doesn't mean you compromise if you will all of your standard or all your things it simply means that you adjust them to where you are in life i will tell you this i pray for my children different now than i did when they were little i do i pray different i pray for my wife now differently than 30 years ago soon to be 35 right keep me out of trouble a couple weeks will be 35 years i pray for her different now than i did i spend a lot well excuse me a lot of time now praying for my lord bless my wife's health bless her mind bless her body honor her honor her uncut hair i pray that god honor her connection to you i know i mean years ago i prayed that but i didn't have to pray for her body is my lord help you but now i know the the test and i ask her to pray for me honey just pray that i won't lose my mind today i'm i spent 20 minutes yesterday looking for it i don't worry i don't want to happen to those 20 minutes here's my point listen to me carefully understand the principles of compromise you would but you don't you don't but you would and those things that you're wanting to do you're trying to accomplish it's causing you to to conflict within because you're trying to establish things but then you fall apart on them and then you wonder where's god in all of it what the ultimate thing here he says is that you've got to understand there's a spiritual and a flesh battle going on when i asked you a while ago to write down something that would be said at your funeral that's because friend of mine at the funeral guess what there is no turning back it's done at that point when your life is over guess what there are no do-overs there's not a flip of the coin does he come back or not it's done verse number or excuse me point number six on your handout does your private life your public life add up or does one of those your public or your private does it compromise and attack the other one listen to me some of you come to the house of god with a great need but because of the battle that's going on in your mind you feel like that all week you've been beat up and you know you've you've not done what you thought so now you come in the house of god and you got to spend the first 30 45 minutes in the house of god trying to get yourself in a position to where you can hear from god and all the while god's saying hold on a minute i thought i'd already forgiven you of that you're the one who brought that back you're the one who brought that up sometimes god is trying to help us understand things he's trying to help us to realize that when we come to him we need to know god your hand is on me and leading me and i can rest on that if your private life and your public life are two different ones you might want to introduce them to each other and say we we need to get in harmony here we need to work on some things i'm not saying one's bigger better better or worse i'm saying that that there has to be continuity in those two number seven is it difficult for you to sit quietly in a room by yourself along with your thoughts let me ask that again is it difficult for you to sit quietly in a room by yourself alone with your thoughts no music no distraction just you for some people this is terrifying because then they begin to think of this or that or the failures or the faults or the mess-ups or what they should have or what they could have they don't want to be alone because it's beating them or it's hounding them listen friend if you can't get to a place to where you enjoy the silence that that still time with god then you're always going to be looking for the scream of god and it's not there just ponder that am i okay sitting alone quietly by myself in the room number eight are you in a constant search for personal growth are you in a constant search for personal growth one of the things that that i do of course i enjoy reading so when i mention a book this is a great way for personal growth it's an idea right and this this is just one of hundreds if you will if you're not constantly in a mode of trying to get better i'm not saying always doing classes and always online and always certain i'm just saying if you're not in the mode of trying to figure things out and say lord what is next or what can i do or what do i need or am i okay here in that mode of allowing god to i'll use it this way how many understand the concept of thou art the potter and i am the clay okay thou art the potter and i am the clay what does the potter do to clay anybody you what how and you're right what what's the piece you're missing and please what no what else come on what is that clay doing on that wheel spinning it's in a constant motion now back in my younger days when i was in the third grade yeah third grade we had pottery class we had to kick the wheel and fast you kick it you know anybody ever do that y'all notice here it would be slow-mo but think of it a third grader's leg tv dvd you know fred flintstone style and in your molding this is what i learned if you don't get enough speed and spin on the clay on the wheel what happens it's called start over because it goes whoa like man here we go if you indeed are clay on the potter's wheel guess what there is something that is continuously working in you this is almost a spiritual insight for somebody you need to always be in a mode of saying lord help me to continuously watch and pray because if i am on your wheel lord and i'm turning things can happen that quick and if i'm not watching what will happen miss it number nine in your search for contentment and joy what have you had to set a aside along the path of life and your search for contentment your search for joy is there anything that you've had to set aside huh anybody have you ever had to set a friend aside you know you're you're probably not doing me much good at this point anybody what's something else i mean if you need to just look up here that'll keep you out of trouble is there anything else that you've had to set aside material things certain types of entertainment influences what else the fact of the matter is this if you are in that constant mode of searching you are doing something with the spirit that god's put in you and you're trying to find god and you're continuously in the mode of being shaped by him and you are learning god will speak things will happen the spirit of god will complete itself if i will stay in a mode of continuously looking for him and there are things that i might have to lay aside at times there are things jobs activities influences that i may have to put aside friends relationships because it is going to hinder my connection with god any of these that i'm mentioning to you are compromise god loves you look at your name and say you know jesus loves you if jesus does indeed love you then guess what he knows you and he is trying to work things out of you but as the title says challenges that nobody expects but they come after you is sometimes you end up compromising your walk with god your belief in god what god is trying to do because in your search for fulfillment you can actually look to the flesh instead of the spirit you can actually look to things and stuff possessions and jobs and finance and things now questions there anything wrong with a job or anything wrong with finances anything wrong with possessions no it's when you get those things out of whack and they show up before god it then becomes an obstacle if god is right there this post can everybody see that post everybody sees a side of that post but that post is there if i'm standing here looking at god and that's god right there i've got a straight view of him don't i that's easy to see but if this represents an obstacle now what now it's kind of skewed it's kind of blocked there's something in the way and now i've got a choice to make do i sidestep the obstacle go around it or do i confront the obstacle and figure out a way to get it out of my way so that my connection with him is not hindered the obstacle then becomes the point of issue listen to me carefully because the obstacle can be something that is very near and dear to you like your children or your spouse or your job or your bank account then you got to figure out what to do with it now i'm watching the clock here number 10 assimilate a plan to stop the compromise and start the building of character because here's compromise the way to beat the compromise the way to overcome the compromise is to strengthen your character the same always if you will develop principles and guidelines in your life that cause your character to be strong and christ-like determined then when the ability that you have to compromise comes along you can lean on your character and you can say you know what in my flesh or in my spirit i know what to do but i battle that and i know what not to do and i battle that but you know what god has worked on my character enough that i don't have to compromise last week we talked about becoming a cynic being cynical about things they just don't want it they've got their own agenda in mind brother jerome would you come please yeah they're doing it there they don't care about god they don't care about the things of god tonight we're talking about us compromising we didn't we didn't want to compromise it's just we had to make some tough choices and perhaps you've compromised some things that used to be very valuable to you i'll finish tonight i'll close with this parents you are teaching your children every day to be a good person right that's what you're teaching them to be honest to be you know truthful to to be hard worker committed on and on you're trying to put these things in them and the reason you're doing that is because you know that the rewards of that are going to be generational because if you have a good work ethic and you teach your children to have a good work ethic most likely what it's going to carry on if you don't have a good work ethic and you're you don't let your children learn how and then probably by the third generation you'll be waiting on yourself because your grandkids are not going to wait on you at christmas time with a cup of coffee because i haven't learned how to be a servant now i will be the first to tell you i'm very thankful that i'm fourth generation fifth generation apostolic my great-grandmother was baptized in jesus name received the holy ghost my kids are fifth generation or whatever they are 20th generation i'm already claiming my grandkids but here's the thing i will tell you there was a whole lot of my week monday through sunday that we were doing church stuff that's just the way it was brother gibson what my brother and i when we were at itty bitty's guess what our jobs was our job as this big was we would sleep under the front pew couldn't sleep on the floor out in front of it nor on the pew had to be under it that's protection because it was fitting to get crazy in church but after the amen my brother and i we'd get up and we'd go and pick up all the bobby pins it was it was a contest who could get the most anybody use bobby pins nowadays i mean i stopped years ago but herb do you know what a bobby pin is okay okay but that's what we did we'd walk in the door of the church just for whatever and if there was trash on the floor we pick it up check the trash cans now again i'm a little fella but that's just what it was that's just how it was so what i talked to my kids was what come in the house of the lord if you see trash pick it up if something needs done take care of it don't you dare use a last paper towel and whatever you do don't use the last of the toilet paper anybody understand what i'm saying why are those little lessons important why are they important you're building the character of your child they will be less likely to compromise if it's simply a part of who they are mom and dad you want to help your children be financially stable you teach them how to pay their tithe and give an offering teach your them how to give of their first fruits and watch what god will do that's the best financial plan you could give them you want to teach them to be self-sufficient to be able to stand on their own you teach them how to pray teach them how to pray come on you want to make them strong in character and strong in principles you teach them to be an intercessor to where they pray for things that they don't even know about we need a whole generation of intercessors today kids that are not afraid to stand in the gap to pray and to to intervene in situations what's happening in our culture today in 2022 friend is the byproduct of the previous generation took prayer out of school if you will people stopped caring about going to the house of god they started buying boats and campers and stuff and doing their weekends out as often as they can and then god all of a sudden got really small the church even lord don't let me get sidetracked the church even accommodated them church back to 45 minutes you know what we realize you're probably going to be around on sunday for about that if you'll just come on and give a give a moment of prayer you know your old-timer said let's have a season of prayer well you young you all know what a season of prayer is anybody what was a season of prayer when you were growing up old folk it was when the leaves were on the trees and then waiting on them to fall and waiting on i mean it might have been forever but you learned your character was established i can stand right here on any given church service time and i can look around this particular sanctuary and i can see some of you truly understand the power of connecting with god because it is in your prayer it is in your praise it is in your worship but others i can look at and three minutes into prayer they're looking for something else that tells me that their character has not been developed to be an intercessor for the things of god and i don't know how else to say that i'm not throwing an axe at anybody i'm not trying to condemn anyone i'm simply telling you friend in the world in which we live and i'm going to tell you what if a crazy lunatic is going to go into our elementary schools with a gun you better know friend somebody better be praying for those babies somebody needs to be teaching those teachers how to pray for those babies because it's for sure that the world's not going to pray for and as as aggravated as i get sometimes i understand the sentiment i do i understand their thought our thoughts and prayers are with you they probably should have been there before when i come to this church on sunday i'm here about 8 30 to 8 40 every sunday that i can get here that early now the old church i missed that time so much man it was eight o'clock i was in the door it's just quiet time for me it's peaceful i get air set i can make sure there's toilet paper and paper towels or whatever all that's being done but i just and i know some of y'all think it's weird that's why i gotta get there so early because i'm hoping you'll be here i have no idea what you're gonna bring with you i don't know the torments you've been through all week i don't know the trials and things you've been through all week heaven forbid i wouldn't get here early to be able to get this thing and this thing connected so that when you walk through the door that i couldn't say god i don't know where they're at but god they need you help the lord encourage them lord you see where pastor is right when they're up here singing this is my piece of carpet you're welcome to it what do you think i'm doing when i'm walking that what am i doing and i'm watching some of y'all know me right when a guest comes in i'll go anybody some of y'all it's so funny when you oh don't be that what no just you know why am i doing that what am i trying to get you to do what connect with why you don't know why they're at church that god knows because you've been praying for it heaven forbid that our compromise would keep them from getting something from god stand with me please again if you don't have it get it it'll it'll work on you next week guess what we're going to talk about it's at the bottom of your page who say it again yeah again no wrong pride sorry y'all just thought it was sorry herb you all just thought it was pride no it's the lion's pride i'm joking somebody went you're gonna get home later and go lion king pride what we're going to talk about next week take a hand please if somebody close by you want you to pray for them this is what i want you to pray lord help them to develop a godly character so that they will not compromise come on pray that prayer come on jesus i pray right now lord my brother my sister i pray lord they would develop a godly a godly character a godly character so that they will not compromise jesus your mercy lord never ends your patience without your long suffering your gentleness lord you are there for us always always always
