It is uh Wednesday, October 28th. Feel free to go to your journal for notes. Um this is our final session here of the this month theme has been greater community as on the screen. um what what have we what have we learned about community over the last several weeks? Le let's have some some discussion. Now, for those who want to know, last week um my wife and I were out of town at a funeral. We did watch the the um study online and it was very interesting to hear one-sided lesson. And it was actually cool cuz we didn't hear anything y'all said, but we heard Sam go. Okay, y'all. That's a good point. Anybody else? We're like we we got, man, I don't even know what that. So, we we are trying to remedy that. All right. What what have we learned about community? Anyone else? What have we learned? Necessary. Yeah, community is necessary. Absolutely. What else? One of the biggest enemies of community is selfishness. Selfishness, that's right. Is an enemy to the community. Oh, that almost goes in a song. Anyone else? Anybody at all? In your own words, let's go here. In your own words, what is community? That's an easier one. and making feel people feel a part of something and love. Very good. Someone else. Group of people who have shared beliefs. Okay. Okay. A group of people with shared beliefs and goals. That's the definition. Absolutely. Anyone else care to put something in? I think the word be share. Share. Yeah, that's one word definition. Very good. Share. Um, allow me. It doesn't mean you have to um agree maybe um with some people, but it does mean you have to be in harmony with them. Uh, anybody here play guitar? Yeah. How many strings are on the guitar? Six strings on a guitar, unless it's a 12 string. Um, does any string on the guitar play well by itself? Sure, that's what I played. Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding. But when they go together, the key of G makes more sense. The key of C makes more sense. Right? Because you put them together and they're in tune. Let's go there first. All right. Um, where can a community be located? Where can a community be located? Anywhere. anywhere. Okay. What does that mean? Okay. So, it it doesn't have to be walls. It doesn't have to be city limits. Okay. It can be a job. What else? Just Just in friendships that may be part of other communities, but there's a common something. What else? Hospitals. Different cultures. Different cultures. Yeah. Hospitals. that boy that's a terrible community right now Joe got a lot in common right anybody else neighborhood a ne where you live physically live absolutely the the point of that is simply this I think that sometimes we want to agree that the community that we're a part of makes a difference in our lives and in others right sometimes you may travel 30 minutes from your physical location and you may travel an hour from your location. You may come 20 minutes from yours. You may walk across the street. But the fact that you come together in a unified place, unified agreement, that makes the community. Can I want to ask one more question before we get into our session for tonight? Is it possible to destroy a community? It is. How how can you destroy a community? Going back to the sister selfish okay so if selfishness seeps into a community how does it destroy it Seth I I think that's true but how community okay and what does selfishness do okay all right so in in a community everybody has a voice but selfishness says I don't care What you say? This is my way or my way. All right. I I I agree with that. Anyone else? How would you destroy a community? Bad leadership. Bad leadership in a community. Absolutely. Because if the guidance, if the road isn't set, there can be confusion. Now, I I think if I may, I think that in a community there can be multiple leaders. For an example, every city has a mayor and has a council, has a um um committee, uh has things that they work with because it's all part of the system. Now, pardon me, because we understand the value of community and greater community again is what we're focusing on. I I think then we understand that for us to be a part of a unified effort, we have to give ourselves to it with understanding. Have you ever been a part of something that you really weren't sure you fully understood? For for an example, for an example, on Sunday afternoon, when you want to go to XYZ place to eat lunch and everyone else wants to go to ABC place to eat lunch and you end up going to their place instead of yours, does that make sense to you? Does anybody get mad about that? As long as it's not everything, you got Is it okay to say you got a give and take? Can I use a word that don't I don't misunder don't miss saying you have to compromise sometimes how things go that's part of the relationship in the community right so suffice it to say here at CAC we are a community we have people that come we have intentionality we have ideas we have thoughts we have different ways of doing things Sam a couple weeks ago talked about trusting being able to trust one another in the community uh we talked about finding our place in the community so that we can encourage and help others. Tonight I'm going to talk about in this final session um types of communities. Le let's let's let's look at that. What's type a type of a community? Uh is there any such thing as a smart community? Okay. Apparently nobody's part of one. Um, is is there any such thing? Technology or Well, well, yeah. Uh, let's call it technology. There's communities of of smart people. Anybody ever heard of Silicon Valley? Yeah, that's that's what I think of and you think of in that area. I dare say not I dare say not all of them are engineers, but the community of in and of itself has set a precedence to be okay. Has anybody ever driven past unknown of a drug community? What does that mean? But it that's it's thought of. Okay. You see what I'm saying? So it identifies that place. How about an established community? You know, for an example, we this church is if you go right out here and look at this sign, it's Brainer. What? It's right there on that sign. Briner Hills. Do you know how old this subdivision is? Walk around through all these houses out through here. They're small 900 square foot houses. Um it's a different established neighborhood. A lot of young couples. Also, I found out that uh the families on this other road over here, it's 43 years they've lived in that house. And we need to be quiet here. I'm joking. How how about a determined community? Uh Tim and Benita for they they came they moved into Magnolia. Was was that a community when you moved in of sorts? Is it growing? It's a determined community. I mean the builder's that way. Pratt, that's how he does it. There's 200 230 houses 200 whatever houses in there. I'd say that's thought out. They started with one. There you go. Uh they have a a a central location for uh gettogethers and and uh swimming pool and all that stuff. Commons areas, if you will. Have sidewalks. Okay. The point of that is this. That was a thoughtout, engineered community. In that community, I mean, use you guys if it's okay. See, I don't have that. I have my house in the cows. and the cow that they're not even mine anyway. Oh, and two donkeys and a partridge in a in a pear tree. Um, in that does everyone in that community have the same ideas and intentions, but they still live in the community? Do they all do the same kind of work, but they still live in the community? Okay, so we understand that. Has anybody has anybody ever been into an Amish community? Huh, that's interesting. It's different than a German maybe community or or or a Latin community or a a Russian community. Here here in Chattanooga, we have Ukrainians, man. They're all over the place. They have their own communities. Does it make them better or worse than the Spanish-sp speakaking community? No. What does it do? Yeah. It's okay that they're in their community. They have their culture, the way they do things. Follow me carefully. What I'm trying to establish here is that a community can be so many things. A community of apostolic can be so many things. I believe that here at CAC that we are part of something to where we are trying to establish goals, principles, teachings, doctrines, things biblically based that we can move the gospel forward. Couple of weeks ago, uh, my wife and I had opportunity to be at Robbie and Eli's wedding. Really cute. Uh afterwards we went to a a dinner and the photographer happened to get seated next to us and she didn't know it. Bless her heart, she she was fine with it. Um she goes to a church in another town but as a as her church uh she and her husband there but she's a photographer and we sat and there were several of us sitting and she asked I I don't I know about this type of religion. She goes to kind of a charismatic if you will, non-denominational, I guess. She said, "What is a United Pentecostal church?" I see that that's what Robbie and Eli are. What do you guys believe? Young couple sitting across from us. I waited, paused for him to respond. He's eating. I'm eating. She's eating. The lady, the girl's eating. And so I just kind of looked up at him and he went. So I said, "Yeah." I said, "Well, that's a great question and I want you to know I appreciate you asking." Said, "We believe in the apostles doctrine and teaching. We believe the church began after Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John began the book of Acts, the Acts of the Apostles." The message was preached, repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sin, you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. We believe that's still prominent today. and that that is the biblical scriptural basis for salvation. We also believe living a holy life acceptable to the Lord and trying to teach and instruct as many others to go that same route is what we're about. You know what she said? How cool is that? So do we. And then we chatted a little bit more and she had to get up and go take pictures. The guy sitting across from me, he looked up, set his fort down. He said, "I don't know that I've ever heard it so simple." I said, "Well, what were you going to say?" cuz I waited on you. And his wife sitting next to him, she said, "Well, I was going to tell her that we're different because we and we got I'm going, you can do that." She said, "But most of the time people don't accept it." And I went, "Don't make the apostolic community appear to be blocks and walls. Come on." You know, way yonder back yonder my early ministry, I was with a guy at a that worked with me, Gary Herren. Somebody asked him, "You guys speak in tongues at your church?" And without pause. Absolutely. Don't you? No. He said, "Then come to my church and you will." Instead of, "Well, uh, what had happened?" um um you know um Jesus wept. Listen to me. I don't belittle any of that. What I'm telling you is this guys. Apostolic doctrine and teaching is the biblical foundation of the church. If you're not sure about that, do your homework and research. Study to show yourself approved. a workman understanding again we can we all have different we come from different walks of life different cultures and stuff and we come together as a community there's a reason that a greater community can have a greater impact on the city the place the neighborhood where they live to the book of Acts watch this this is now you guys know all of this if you have your Bible please use it um Acts chapter number four Acts Acts chapter number four verse 32. Uh Presley, you have been given the Can we Are you guys in the media room listening? Can you put the KJV, please? That's just for my benefit because I've got notes on it. Thank you. That's the ESV. Now they're sc they're there they're they're scampering now. Thank you all so much. Somebody begin reading verse 32 of chapter 4, the book of Acts. Somebody and the multitude of them that were of one heart and of one soul. Neither of them he possessed his own. Pause. The multitude of them that believed were what? One heart. How interesting is that? But understand just prior to this Acts chapter 2, they're on the street and there's 17 languages mentioned. They were Persian. They were from Thyra. They were from Cesaria. They were from all of the places. But now chapter 4, the Bible says specifically here when Luke wrote this that they were of one heart, one soul and that they knew that what they owned was not theirs. Follow follow along here. Verse uh that all things possess of his own, but they had what's it say? All things common. Common is the root for say it community. Community. All right. Verse 33. Someone anyone 35 someone 36. Uhhuh. Uhhuh. And 37. Thank you. Okay, guys. We have this multitude that believed and uh what? Somebody help me. Chapter three of Acts. What happened? Peter Peter and the gospel. Well, Peter and John went to the temple temple in the house at the hour of prayer. Somebody say prayer works. All right. I got all this going on in chapter 4. This multitude now of people are hearing and seeing and witnessing what's going on. And the Bible tells us specifically that they were of one heart, one soul. I would say that's the clear definition of a community. They have things in common. The scripture says when you have all things common, what does that mean about your individuality? What does it mean about your thoughts or your desires and intentions compared to the desires and the intentions of the group? Anyone? Secondary. So it's okay to not be first in line. All right? It's okay to be a part of the community, the common unity of understanding that what you've done is you've come together, one heart, one soul. It's okay to let God be God in the group. Hey, the beauty, listen care, the beauty of the church in the New Testament was that did not matter skin color, race, gender, none of that. And it did not matter. When they come under the power of the Holy Ghost and God filled them with the wonderful gift of the Holy Ghost, they became changed. And now, as was said to the smart guy Nicodemus, born again of water and spirit, that changed everything. You understand the beauty of that? Do not let 2026 culture tell you that the apostolic doctrine doesn't matter. It matters. And we've got to be willing to say, "Lord, let my pride, my arrogance, my selfishness, if you will, subside and come second to what your plan is for the community." And the Bible in verse 33, this to me is the most impressive thing about this. They had all things common, but with great power, the apostles gave witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And grace, great grace was upon them all. I I think that this was intentionally put here in this account because when you understand that the spirit of the Lord, the the fact that Jesus Christ was born, lived, died, and rose again changes everything. Knowing that they were given great power and great grace was working. Why? Why doesn't it just stop at great power? Why is great grace mentioned here by the writer? What do you think? Talking community which means what you're ask they were human they they were going to work through issues fall short need help. I want to help somebody tonight in this little midweek university Bible study. For those of you who are expecting to be perfectly in line and astute in all things before you open your mouth and become part of a witness of the community, you're you're waiting. You're going to wait. The Bible says that they had great power. I mean, things were happening and then grace was there. You know, you probably should have known a little more. Let let me ask you something. How many How many believe that at this point Acts chapter 4 in history that these guys had the Bible memorized? Huh? They didn't what? Wasn't even So there goes that excuse. Now we have it written. They that the the what they put up was a King James version. Before that was the English Standard Version. There's all kinds of versions. So if you don't like one, you can go to another one right now. I don't care for some of them because they don't make sense to me. I prefer to go back to the old or at least part of the original of it so I can study why it was in that way in Greek or Hebrew. But the fact remains is that God gives us grace in the community. We have grace. You can make mistakes. You can fall short. You can flop on the ground. But if you're under the power of the Holy Ghost, things will happen. God will bless the community. Amen. That's why we're still here today. Let me tell you something. I was reminded just this week. Just this week, I was reminded of the grace and the mercy of God on this congregation. God has been good to this church. I say God has been good to this church. Let me use an old time word, doubly good. There have been so many things, changes. People have come and gone. Buildings have come and gone. paint colors have not changed. Sorry, I was going to say come and gone, but anyway, uh we're we're still on the gray. Um and here we are. Here we are. God is still blessing. God is still moving. Lives are still being changed. We we are on the on the road forward. Hey, Crystal, welcome. Yes, ma'am. You sit you sit where you feel like you can. No, no, not notice something here. Verse 34 of this. Believe it or not, we're still in community there. If any of them lacked, they didn't. Can in in the media room, will you put up verse 34, please? Neither was there any among them that act. Oh, sorry. I was joking. What would that Let me ask a question. You ready for this? 2026. Is anyone in here lacking possessions, things? Lacking. Anybody else? Oh, some have too much. Okay. Anybody lacking? lacking in this terminology. You would almost wonder if it meant basic needs or does it mean uh the red dress instead of the blue dress, the black shoes instead of the brown shoes, uh the Corvette instead of the pickup truck? Because the scripture is very specific here. It says that great power was there, great grace was working. Neither was there any among them that lacked. For as many as were possessors of lands or houses did what? Sold them and brought the prices of things that were sold. It listen carefully. This does not say the church, the body of believers, this group of people sold everything they had and gave everything away. Because if they did that, then nobody would have anything because everything would have been given away. Follow me. Is that the way we need to live? Do we need to live as poppers? It's a question. Can Can you be a trillionaire and go to heaven? I dare one of y'all to try it. I'm joking. Here's the thing. The Bible says it's difficult, hard for a rich man. It's not impossible. It's even given the reference of the camel. through the eye of a needle. Now, that does have a biblical context. The eye of the needle is not the little thing you thread with a button. That's not the teaching. The eye of the needle was an actual rock formation. In order to get through it with your goods, you would have to take everything off your camel if you were traveling. I don't want to get stuck in the weeds here. And you would literally bow the camel to the ground on his knees and he would have to inch along through that what was called the eye of the needle to get him through. It was an incredible bout. Once they got the camel through, put the stuff back on it and move. Follow me. Where we make the mistake, listen carefully, in our culture is we have a whole lot of prosperity doctrine churches out there, communities out there that will tell you give everything you have, be left with nothing, and watch how the Lord blesses. That is a great theology except it's not biblical. If you don't work, you don't eat. Doesn't it say that? If if you don't support take care of your family, you're worse than a infidel. You have no connection. The Bible does not contradict itself. In this teaching for that community, what was being said was this. I mounded up the stuff that I thought was important and now I have found a better way and I've sold things because I believe in supporting the things of God. The scripture even, you know, we talked about this not long ago about there was widows and orphans. There was there was this big riff in the church. I said, "Man, you we we got to take care of these widows because Jesus said to make sure you take care of the children and the widows." Why why does that matter? I don't want to get sidetracked. I've got the clock. Why does that matter in a community? The widows and the orphans support. Do they need that? Why can't they just get a job and take care of themselves? Okay. But so should we feel sorry? Yes, sir. Thank you. How how is the culture different? And the man owned everything. The wife had nothing. She could not buy the law. That was established law. So for an example, and I believe, y'all ready for this? In the United States of America, anybody ever been to Jamestown? If you haven't, make it put on your bucket list. You need to go over to Jamestown before they decide to sell it. Go in there. Do some research on Jamestown, Yorktown, okay? Williamsburg. Ask uh the Hortons. They used to live over there. One of the coolest things, one of the coolest things. I'm sorry. Virginia. No, it's in uh uh Virginia on the coast. Okay, you need to go. I'm going tell you why. Uh in the chapel in Jamestown on the back wall was their doctrine. It was printed. Acts 2:38. True story. Also, if you didn't have a husband to work, then the the lady, the mother, the mom, the wife, if she were left a widow, she would have to fend for herself. She was the one that would wash clothes and all that. She would starve to death most times because nobody was there to support her. If you did not work, you did not eat. Had prayer break twice a day. Nobody worked during prayer break. I'm only giving you these details because this nation was that way. Now we live in a great United States of America where all of a sudden people decided we have such abundance. Let's let's just give people a token. And what that's done is where we are today in our culture. I don't have to judge anybody. I don't have to point a finger at no one. I can say look outside the walls of the church. Look outside the walls of your home, of your job, and you see people that are well capable and able of working, but they're not. Why? simple reason why they don't have to. Now follow me here in this particular setting in this community in Acts chapter 4 the Bible says there was no there was no lacking of things people sold they brought the apostles took that they laid it at the apostles feet they took the money and they would distribute and they would help and they would encourage and that community began or became the place where the entire city the neighborhoods could say if you want the blessing or you want help or you need encouragement go to the apostles that doctrine and teaching. That's why when Paul became when he got onto the scene and later in the book of Acts, what did Paul begin to do to all those churches in in Galatia and Philippi and and and Ephesus? What was he doing to them? In our Bible, they're called epistles, letters. Hey guys, I need to help you with this. I'm showing you what this means. I'm instructing you how this works. Huh? My my kids used to come to Michelle and I and ask for stuff and and we would give them everything their heart desired. No, we would give them stipulations. Three strikes, you get no allowance. If you do your chores, save your money. I want you want that bicycle. Let's save our money. We'll show you how. They paid their tithe. We try to instruct them this big and up. This is how it works. Why? Because if you understand the blessings and the good things that God does in you and for you, then you're able to say, "I am doing this because of the goodness of the Lord." Let me let me show you guys something in the book of Acts chapter number five verse one. Somebody read Watch this. Acts 5 and1. Keep reading please. Pause. So, chapter four, they had possessions. They sold, they brought and laid it to the apostles feet. Everybody agree that's what they did? Chapter five, you got this couple, man and wife. They're part of the community. They're trying to fit in. They're trying to be a part of it. They also had a possession and they sold it. But the Bible says that in agreement, they agreed to hold back part of it. Notice what they did with what they brought. What did they do with it? It says right there in chapter or in verse two that matches what everyone else was doing. What was different though? What else? What else? the the intent was wrong. Stay with me. We Okay, keep reading, please. Verse three. thou conceived. Number verse number five. And Ananas hearing these words fell down gave up the ghost. Okay. Verse or chapter four. Great power, great grace. Chapter five. What does verse what does verse five say? and great fear came. So what was great power and great grace added to that was great fear. Why talking community? Why did great fear come upon them? Because they lied. They allowed sin. They allowed selfishness. We just talked about that. They allowed self-centeredness to become their motivation. And in so doing, listen, they didn't even confess to Peter, "Look, Peter, we sold this for $100 and here's three of it or whatever." The spirit of God demonstrated its intolerance of their selfishness. Pet Ananas, what do you do, man? You knew this. What's going on? Um Um Sorry, that's a little dramatic. Hollywood version, right? Trying I was trying to help. And this dude dies, right? Fear comes upon the whole group. Oh my goodness. Let me ask you a question. What do you think that did for everybody that was in that room or in that community at that time? You better be You better be honest. I If God's blessed you and you sold and you you better make sure you follow through. Look, watch how this story unfolds. Keep reading, please. Verse six. Seven. of three hours when his wife not came in. And Peter answered her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much." Then Peter said unto her, "How is it?" Verse 10. Yeah. straight away number 11. So you had power, great power, grace, great grace, and now you've got great fear. I thought the wife was not held accountable because it was not hers. That was the law, the culture. The husband, the man is the one that had everything. Notice this. The community says Holy Ghost is poured out, revival's happening, explosion of apostolic doctrines being taught. And one of the first lessons they learned was they went in the temple at the hour of prayer and a miracle happened by the power of the name of Jesus. Agreed. Chapter 4. Chapter 5. Now the church is growing. The body of believers is growing. And something happened here. You know what, Ananas? You lied. And because of that, the Holy Ghost struck him to the ground. We agree. They came in, bound him up, buried him. Imagine being those young guys going and they're getting they're wrapping him up, taking him out, putting him in the ground. They're wiping their brow. They're sitting down drinking their cup of coffee for the afternoon because this just happened. And all of a sudden, listen to this. Safh which was Ananas's wife comes in and Peter says you went in harmony unison agreement with your husband and you have done this thing and you guys did this together you're going to be held accountable too do you know what this tells us about community with Jesus every one of us are responsible And great fear came upon all the church upon as many as heard these things. I think that there's a great difference between fear and favor. The favor of God was demonstrated in ver in chapter 4. The fear of God began to settle in in chapter five. Why do we think then the ability to work together, to worship together, to invest together, to cry together, to hurt together, to grow together, to laugh together, to have a good time together, all these things are needed because it is connecting you to the community. If you think for a moment that the challenges in your life and the difficulties and stuff is God's fault, it's not true. So many times we face the repercussions of our bad choices and our decisions. God all the while still has great power and great grace for the community, for the church. I believe that. And if we as the church, even in 2026, although we live in a different culture, different era, I believe that the Lord God is still looking for those who will commit completely and surrender all things to him. And in so doing, possessions at this point, it mentions it was land. It was stuff they owned like that. Of course, we can go into a side note. I'll I'll step aside for a second. The reason they were selling things so quickly is what were the last words they heard from Jesus? I'm coming back. And I have no doubt they went home and said, "Well, he'll be back tomorrow, so let's get it sold." No, he didn't say, "I'll be back tomorrow." He said, "I'll go to prepare a place so that where I am, you can be here. We are 2,000 plus years later. Has he returned?" Are we still waiting? So, do we just sit down, cross our arms, and say, "Come get me when you want to or do we become a part of the community that believes in the apostles doctrine and teaching and we establish, you know what, the right thing to do is to unify with the call and the purpose of God." Listen carefully, please, and I'm closing this down. It's a 7:45. The greatest challenge in the church is not people outside the church. I am convinced that if the body of the community of Jesus Christ, if we could ever get our act together, if we could ever get our worship together, our belief together, and we could get rid of arrogance and pride and selfishness and all those things that stop jealousy and the things that to begin to to trickle, if we could ever just simply give 100% to God, do you know what would happen to the city of Chattanooga? I'm convinced we could be known as the the church that turned their world upside down. Why? Because a community that believes enough that Jesus is coming and we've got to be found doing the work of God, not sitting and waiting, investing. God's I say this probably every week and I probably need to find a new way to say it, but God has been so good. We we are we are receiving getting doing things that most of us do not deserve jobs that you don't deserve. Education that you don't places that God has promoted you and given you favor you probably don't deserve it. But if you work hard and you give yourself to education, learning, growing, maturing, God is going to open doors and opportunities for you. Now, if you're selfish, self-centered, and you want it all for yourself, you're jealous and you're prideful, and you're more covetousness of the things of others, God is sitting there going, "I don't even know you because you're not a part of the community." The community has all things common. All right? So, I hope these last four weeks that we have figured out that greater community means I'm a part of something that's so much bigger than I. But I willingly invest in it with time, talent, treasure. I willingly agree, God, you're doing good things. You're you're doing positive things. what he's doing on Sunday, what he's doing on Tuesday, what he's doing in midweek university, what he's doing on a Saturday, what he's doing on prayer time, what he's doing in all sorts of in Bible quizzing. Look at look around what God has done to our church. Let's have things common. Is that okay? Stand with me if you would. We're going to pray. We'll take a break as we make our way down to the other side of the world to our worship time. But I I believe that greater community begins as we understand what God is doing and we yield oursel to it. Pray with me. Lord, we thank you for the word. We thank you for the power of the word that makes the difference in us. I pray tonight, Lord, for each one that's here that you would let the word of God take root, dear God, in each one of us. Let it flourish. Let it show fruits, dear God, for the labors. I pray Jesus that the seed of the word would plant itself deep within us. Pray God that you would help us as a church family, a church body to love each other and to to love those around us and to be a community unified with purpose to make a difference in this world to share the good news of Jesus Christ to to believe that their lives too can be changed by the glory of God by the repenting of their sins and being baptized in the name of Jesus, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. their lives can be changed. Dear Lord, that's the plan and the purpose that you gave the unified community of believers. Help us bless our time tonight as we worship together in Jesus name. Thy kingdom come and thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus name, let the church say, "Amen." Love y'all. Thank you for your attention tonight.
