Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Then came Amalek
- In the head text, the enemy attacks Israel at a place whose name the preacher says means refreshing and rest — and the place of rest became the place of attack.
- Joshua fought in the valley while Moses stood on the hill with the rod of God; when Moses held up his hand Israel prevailed, and when he let it down the enemy prevailed.
- God commanded the victory to be recorded as a memorial and rehearsed in the ears of Joshua, and Moses built an altar, calling the Lord his banner.
Scriptures: Exodus 17:8-16
Lifting up holy hands
- The service's prayer time is framed by the charge to anoint the sick with oil and pray the prayer of faith over them.
- Across both testaments, lifted hands belong to praise and prayer: Leah praising God, the people answering amen with hands lifted, and the psalmist blessing God with hands raised in his name.
- Men are to pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting, and to pour out their hearts before the Lord in the night watches.
Scriptures: James 5:14; Genesis 29:35; Nehemiah 8:6; Psalm 63:4; Psalm 28:2; Psalm 141:2; Lamentations 2:19; 1 Timothy 2:8
Hands held high through the battle
- The preacher tells of his grandmother, who cared for her husband through dementia and Alzheimer's and still came to church with her hands lifted high, never blaming God.
- Even Moses grew weary, and others had to come alongside and hold up his hands; victory requires prayer, not talent or resources alone.
- The three calls of the close: victory requires prayer, get your own hands up, and help others get their hands up.

yeah know she's in here sorry sister Charlotte yeah I'll talk to y'all after it is it is a great it is a great state because it did bring me my beautiful wife Kelly wow I just turned that around let's get into the word of God tonight if you have your Bibles turn with me to the Book of Exodus uh chapter 17 and we'll begin reading at verse 8 awesome all always to have our brother sister George here with us love you all and it's always a blessing to have you here with us and from the church in Owensboro I reiterate welcome to you all what a testimony even in this inclement weather uh to make your way into the house of the Lord Exodus chapter 17 and we'll begin reading at verse number eight then came amalec and fought with Israel in ridom and Moses said unto Joshua choose us out men and go out fight with amalec tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand so Joshua did as Moses had said to him and fought with amalec and Moses Aaron and her went up to the top of the hill and it came to pass when Moses held up his hand that Israel prevailed and when he let down his hand amalec prevailed but Moses hands were heavy and they took a stone and put it under him and he sat thereon and Aaron and hers stayed up his hands the one on the one side and the other on the other side and his hands were steady until the go going down of the Sun and Joshua dis confided amalec and his people with the edge of The Sword and the Lord said unto Moses write this as a memorial in the book and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua for I will utterly put out the remembrance of amalec from under heaven and Moses built an altar and called it Jehovah nii for he said be because the Lord Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with amch from generation to generation I want to minister to you for a few moments tonight from the topic Hands Held High the power of Prayer in the Battle of Life The Power of Prayer in the Battle of Life we've prayed a few times this evening and we'll pray some more so I'm going to get go ahead and get right into it pictured here behind me is a fresco of an early Christian worshipper it's a round dated from the second half of the 3 century and it was found on a catacomb in Rome Italy and this is a posture of Prayer in the early church standing with hands and eyes upraised to heaven and this was a common posture for prayer in the early church this imagery allows us to imagine what it would have been like in the Jerusalem's buildings to have been filled with worshippers with their hands and their eyes and their heads lifted up to heaven in vision for a moment the many hundreds of hand upraised gathering around the holy sights acknowledging a Risen Savior and I must say that I am grateful to be a part of a Church body that it is not difficult to imagine such a scene as we from week to week get to experience what seems as an infinite amount of hands lifted up to heaven in worship and praise to the King of Kings and the Lord of lords the lifting of hands goes all the way back to the Book of Genesis chapter 29:35 with Leah raising her hands in praise to yah way and naming Judah God's word in both Testaments is filled with hand raisings and praise has always been demonstrated physically as well as verbally Exodus 1711 our key verse so it came about when Moses held up his hand that Israel prevailed that Israel would continue to be Victorious and if he let his hand down then amalec the enemy would Prevail Nehemiah 86 says then Ezra blessed the Lord the great God and all the people answered amen amen while lifting up their hands and they bowed low and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground Pastor mul so eloquently a few weeks back talked about when we lift up our hands it's also a posture of surrender surrendering to God and we certainly do this as worship as well Deuteronomy 32:40 Psalm 634 so I will bless you as long as I live and I will lift up my hands in your name Psalm 282 hear the voice of my supplications when I cry for your help and when I lift up my hands toward your holy Sanctuary Psalm 1412 may my prayer be counted as incense before you the lifting up of my hands for the evening offering talking about and giving the imagery of the sacrifice of praise as the altar of incense goes up the psalmist is letting us know when we lift our hands and when we give God praise it's a sweet incense going up to heaven Lamentations 219 arise cry aloud in the night at the beginning of the night watches pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord and lift up your hands to him for the life of your little ones who are faint because of the hunger at the head of every street when there's a need when there's starvation in the land and there's a a need for your children the first thing that you need to do is lift up your hands 1 Timothy 8 I will therefore that men pray everywhere lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting we turn specifically tonight to our key text from Exodus where we find the Israelites locked in a fierce battle with the AL amalekites this story is not just an ancient account but it's a profound allegory for the battles that we face in our own lives battles against doubt and battles against despair battles about the Temptations that come our way battles about frustration and adversity in this particular narrative we encounter Moses Joshua Aaron and her each playing a vital role in securing victory for Israel and as we delve into the scripture we uncover the critical importance of prayer the necessity of perseverance and the strength we find in unity and support and my aspiration this evening overlooking the inadequacy of the speaker but God's word going forth is to ignite a fire within you ignite an Fire Within Me and ignite and fire with all of us collectively here together that it's a call to elevate our prayer life a call to fortify our faith and a call to recognize that even when we grow weary even when things are in despair that we have a call to hold our hands up high in prayer Our Story begins with the Stark reality then came amalec and fought with Israel and ridum the amalekites were a nomadic tribe and they were known for their ruthless attacks their rules of warfare in fact were that there were no rules of warfare Fair they were known for their brutality and not engaging in battle as typical of other armies or nations for they would pray on the most vulnerable they would pray particularly on those that who were weary or that were straggling behind and their assault on Israel was not just a physical attack but it was a spiritual one it was testing the faith and the resilience of God's people in their campaign to the promised land just like as we see in Psalms 23 with the Lord and the imagery of him being a shepherd and then we see The Parables of Jesus talking about going out and getting that one lost sheep because one lost sheep is vulnerable one lost sheep of uh away from the flock is much more susceptible to an attack from the enemy and this is what the amalekites were looking for they were looking for someone who had isolated themsel or who had separated themselves or who had perhaps gotten behind and were weary and vulnerable and this was the type of individuals that they looked for also when you look at that name refidim or refidim interpreted it means a place of refreshing it means a place of rest but this place of rest would become the place where they became attacked I couldn't help but think as we talk about that place of rest one of the greatest sermons in my life was my grandmother Iola sers this is the mother of my mom and my aunt Sher that's here tonight growing as they grew up they from the from Ohio and my grandmother Iola sers worked as a Night Nurse delivery and work all kind of night shifts and she L worked in the delivery Ward and just worked several hours just making sure that her daughters had everything that they uh needed uh for for life from school to make sure they were able to go to the events uh that the church they were going to hosted and and all of those all of those things and my grandfather Jim sers was a factory worker and he punched a clock I they they say he wasn't late one day in his life I remember just my some of my earliest memories were to be at at their house and uh the grandkids had to keep it down because somebody had to get up and go to work the next day and I remember that my uh Grandpa sellers would get up around 4:30 a.m. punch the clock and this was their life making sure that they had a a home for their daughters and making sure that their daughters uh had everything they needed moved down and pastured and evangelized in the area and just uh all all of their kids moved down this way so when it came to retirement age Jim and Iola sellers had it all planned out and I know that my grandpa had it all planned out because you did not touch his desk it was it was very particular very organized he was at kind of guy when he'd pull up uh at the house he would ask where the paper towels were to make sure and go off and clean the car from the drive you know everything was planned out and what a story book retirement that would be to move down to where their family was now and no offense to Ohio man I'm just making all kind of enemies tonight but East Tennessee is a a place people move to right it's a mountains are close it's a beautiful place and moov down with all their family and what a beautiful retirement that would be but as soon as they arrived my grandfather Jim sers would begin to show signs of the early stages of dementia and Alzheimer's and it was not it was not a quick thing but it was a a slow and often painful often painful digression of his health where he was able to attend church at first but then he lost the ability to communicate and had to have assistance from her uh uh to to walk to everything he needed to to drive to eventually he would he would become uh where he had to be on bedro rest and eventually hospice and uh all of these different struggles and all of these different trials and what was supposed to be a place of rest what was supposed to be a time of renewal and refreshing it did not turn out the way they had planned but as I mentioned the greatest sermon I ever heard was that my I my grandmother Iola sellers she continued through every adversity coming to church just as often as often as she could and when he was mobile they never missed a service you'd see that green neon come almost peeling in the parking lot she cared for him took care of him made sure that he had every everything he needed her daughters didn't hear her saying one time I can't believe God allowed this to happen I I don't know if I don't know if God's promises are are still true in my life in fact it was the opposite every time that she was at church and there would be a testimony service she would begin to talk about the goodness of God and she would do everything that she could to make sure he was listening even though he couldn't communicate she was making sure that he had everything he need I think she brought the hospital bed into church one time with her hands lifted High through this battle of life she didn't know what she was preaching for tonight two of her daughters sit here tonight the other one's a pastor of another church and she's got grandchildren she's got great grandchildren in this house tonight because through the battle and through the trial and through the place that was supposed to be a time time of refreshing and through the place that was supposed to be a time of rest it that was when the enemy attacked her life like never before and attack their life like never before but not one time did she ever blame God but in fact it was absolutely the opposite she had her Hands Held High and say God I don't completely understand why this is happening God I'm not going to ever know this until I get to Glory but God I'm going to give you praise and I'm going to make sure my daughters know I'm going to make sure my grandchildren know I'm going to make sure that my great grandchildren know that there is a place that they can turn to and there is a God who will hear their prayers in the darkest times of their life there's a God who will show up even when I feel like everything in my life has gone to hell and everything in my life has turned to chaos I know that you're still there and what was supposed to be a time of refreshing and a story book retirement turned into no doubt the toughest battle that she had ever faced in her life and you talk about a memorial how can I step into his house and man I don't I don't know if I feel like being here tonight oh that person hurt my hurt my feelings I or man I this this this might be the be the one I I'm too stressed I'm I'm too weary there's too many things going on but I I think of my great grandma or my grandmother rolling that bed into our old Sanctuary down there in our lives amalec represents the forces of Darkness that seem to undermine and Cloud our faith and those weary moments and Destroy and prohibit us from having hope these forces come in many different forms from those Temptations to compromise our values in different difficult circumstances and the despair that Whispers were no longer good enough or Whispers of the things are never going to get back the way they once were the doubts that question God's cial promises in my life and the frustrations that I know many of saints of God Even in our faithfulness deal with sometimes is why am I dealing with this right now this was supposed to be a season of refreshing this was supposed to be a time of rest and just as the Israelites faced a physical enemy there was also a spiritual battle that was raging as well Joshua the courageous Warrior leads the charge against the amalekites symbolizing the active fight we must engage in with these forces no we will not sit idle by We Will We Will press forward and fight but my call to us this evening is Victory is not one by might alone Moses with the rod of God in his hand Thomas if you'd bring that to me ascends to the top of the hill representing the indispensable role of Prayer in our struggles so you have Joshua down on the battlefield with the physical fight with the advancement with the strategies of warfare and you had Moses on the top of the hill overlooking the battle with a rod in his hand and Moses said to Joshua choose out men and go out and fight with amalec tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand and here we see the division of labor Joshua leads the physical battle while Moses engages in scripture in spiritual warfare through prayer Joshua embodies Action Joshua embodies courage and the willingness to confront the enemy hands on he represents the part of us that takes practical steps to overcome challenges maybe if you're a student it's working diligently on a project or in the workplace working on a project or confronting a difficult relationship maybe it's somebody in the house that had to take on two jobs to make sure that their family was cared for or maybe you're a student uh burning the midnight oil and uh or burning the midnight oil for a work project and making sure that you're going to be able to meet that deadline or maybe you're the individual that's battling addiction but you continue to show up to support groups and you're doing everything that you can to get it conquered or maybe you're going to counseling over a trial in your life or whatever that looks like for you it's the physical action that takes place and the determination with inside of you that I'm going to fight and I'm going to be Victorious and I'm going to defeat whatever comes my way even in my weary State Joshua is in each of them fighting diligently whether it be our job or family or personal struggles the the the fight on the battlefield of life that's that's the Joshua but Moses on the other hand symbolizes intercessory prayer with the rod of God in his hand he stands as a mediator between God and his people and the rod is a symbol that God's power and authority reminding us that our strength comes not from ourselves but from him and as long as Moses has his hands up as long as that Rod is up in the air then there's victory in the physical then there's Victory on the battlefield as long as his hands are up in the air Israel is going to advance oh Joshua man when you think about battle and you think about Warfare oh I want Joshua on my side if you were going to put guys against the against the wall and you're going to pick them out for for a battle I'm getting Joshua I mean he walked around a city for goodness sake and it fell down yeah he he's a he's a he's a fighter but God said is as great as a military General as Joshua is all the success and talent and fighting capability that Joshua and his great Army half they're not going to have Victory on the battlefield unless there is prayer going on this El stats that our efforts are only as effective as our prayers are fervent we cannot rely solely on our strength or intellect we must also seek God's guide man I like preach preaching with a staff it's like something else okay keep going okay we must also seek God's guidance and intervention in all that we do prayer is not a passive activity it's an active engagement with God inviting his power to be in our circumstances but even Moses and get heavy so they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it then Aaron and her held up his hands one on one side and one on the other and said Moses from an older generation but thank you for showing us we got a great Army and we we've got a mighty military but Moses we're going to keep your hands up because we know as long as that staffs up we know as long as that rods up there's going to be Victory Moses Des I mean think about who Moses is even though it his strength and and his legacy he was not immune to human weariness Moses whose staff was used to throw down and become a snake in the court of Egypt the the the highest and most powerful in Empire uh one of the most possibly to ever exist in humanity but Moses walks in there with that staff and throws it down and it becomes a serpent and it it eats up all of uh uh uh all of The Illusionist there in the court that that that takes some courage that takes some action Moses whose staff would go up and he would strike the Nile and it would turn to blood right right in the face of pharaoh while they were pressing his people and the same thing every time you read one of the plagues he's doing something with his staff he might be striking the ground to get the gats going or doing something else and waving it around to get the frogs coming or maybe he's going to send hell down or you know what the uh this Red Sea is kind of in the way I've got a good idea I'll hold my staff out and we'll just walk right through it I'm talking about some power in that staff we know who the power came from but I'm talking about M Moses using what he had oh you're hungry in the desert how about some water from a rock but even Moses in all these great victories even Moses with all of this courage and action we find him in the battlefield not hiding out in his tent we find him in the battlefield not saying all right boys y all do it now I'm going to to kick my feet up and drink me something with a an umbrella in it while y'all go out and fight he says no while you all are out there fighting I'm going to be up high interceding on your behalf I'm going to be up high mediating between God and the battlefield because I know you boys know how to fight I know you got some talent but you're not going to win this battle unless there's prayer going on but even Moses physical fatigue took over and even you no matter how great of a saint of God no matter how faithful you are no matter what God's done in your life there's going to be moments of weariness there's going to be moments where you get tired and that's where we as a church body and I don't know anyone who does it any better than fac gets together and says I'm going to help you lift up your hands in this situation I'm going to make sure that your hands stay up so we know what happens Joshua defeated amalec and his people with the edge of this sword and this is a powerful example of the body of Christ now working together in modern day we're not meant to fight our battles alone we need each other to lean on to encourage to lift up when we are weak we're called to support our brothers and sisters through in Christ through prayer encouragement and insistance and through the combined efforts of Joshua and Moses the Israelites achieved a decisive victory over the amalekites and it was not just a temporary one but it was a testimony to God's faithfulness and power God commanded Moses to rec record this as a memorial you need to celebrate what happened here today every single year is what he's saying and every single time that hardship comes along remember what happened on the battlefield against the amalekites because it was Talent oh yeah it was it was great military might and courage to fight all of those things were present and that was necessary but he said the most important thing that was necessary while you're using your talents is that there was prayer going forth and after this Victory Moses built an altar and he named it Jehovah nii and that name means means the Lord is my banner because as those Fighters were out on the battlefield while they were away they had they had probably in that place of rest that place that was supposed to be a place of refreshing they were weary and knowing how the amalekites fought they probably slipped into them by surprise in kind of a dark time of the day and of their life and tried to cheap shot him so there was probably a little chaos at first and there was probably some doubt and weariness at first initially and there was probably a struggle of of of being uh going into battle by surprise and maybe in this struggle and maybe in this doubt maybe those Israelites thought to started to think that maybe I'm not going to get to the promised land and maybe I've gone this far but this is is where it ends I I didn't see this one coming oh we're so talented and and we're so mighty in the fight but but somehow some way in this situation all of the sudden I don't know if I'm going to be able to get where I had planned on going but all of a sudden they looked up and there was some Hands Held High up to heaven oh and when they saw those hand held high it reminded them that there was a God fighting on their behalf oh when they saw those Hands Held High it reminded them that there was going to be Victory and Moses said I got to keep my hands up even in the midst of this battle come here boys I need some help would you help me hold my hands up because this is the only way we're going to get Victory this is the only way we're going to advance this is the only way we're going to get to the promised land if I keep my hands up musicians come on and everybody remain come just go ahead and stand he HS a banner when a s of God has their hands up it's a call to action when your hands are up a couple key takeaways number one Victory requires prayer and this is my call to us tonight there's no doubt that we have the fight there's no doubt that we have the education there's no doubt that we have the resources oh we got the greatest singing and the the greatest of of buildings and we have every single resource at the tip of our fingers what whatever we need we could get together and raise the money oh when there's a need over in North Carolina hey let's just call for it let's raise the money for whatever the need is we're able to come together and there's no doubt that we're able to fight there's no doubt that we can run into battle and wage war on this day but my call to all of us is don't you for one second start thinking oh it's because of my talents I can sing so good I can play so good I can speak so good and I'm such a hard worker oh I've been blessed so mightily I just know how to do that job I've been trained to do I'm so good at business and I'm so good at people oh my marriage is because I just I just know how things operate I know how to do it all of those things will come crumbling to a halt when you start thinking that you did it on your own and the only way that we're going to advance in this today is by remembering that true victory that real Victory is only going to come when we got our hands up in prayer when there's a people that know how to get together and pray it's not about Talent it's not about uh all of our resources it's about prayer second thing is get your hands up we got to get our hands up oh it's a banner in this day it's a banner that I'm advancing it's a banner that I'm calling on The God Who is going to bring me Victory and it's also a banner to somebody else around me who might be going through something oh and they say oh that person's praising and I know what they went through then I think God's going to deliver me as well there's Victory when my hands are up and number three help others get their hands up if you've got a brother or sister who is overtaken in a fall he that is spiritual restore such a one and get their hands up because that's where the victory is I want to invite every single person under the sound of my voice that whatever issue that you're dealing with tonight whatever circumstance that you find yourself in it might be in be in a great deal of confusion and you might be weary and you might be tired and you might have asked those questions Lord why am I going through through this right now in this season I want to give the invitation right now to come up to this altar with your hands up because that's where the worship takes place if you need to lament get your hands up if you need Victory get your hands up if you need to pray in faith get your hands up if you need to pray an intercessory prayer over a lost loved one get your hands up if you need to pray an intercessory prayer over a need for the life of someone else get your hands up if you got a brother or sister who you know's going through a struggle why don't you help them lift up their hands in this house oh and when I begin to look around oh I know I'm going through
