The Blueprint
- The altar in Ezekiel's vision is measured in cubits, with an extra handbreadth added to the measure.
- The extra handbreadth leaves room for God to work beyond what human capacity can reach.
- God calls his people to build beyond what they can finish on their own.
Scriptures: Ezekiel 43:13
The Build
- Noah built the ark in faithfulness over many years, and when the time came God shut the door himself.
- At the wedding, the servants filled the six waterpots to the brim, and Jesus supplied the transforming touch that turned water into wine.
- Human effort is necessary, but it is not sufficient without God's intervention.
Scriptures: Genesis 7:16
The Breath
- "It is finished" was a declaration that the sin debt was paid, not a cry of defeat.
- The power of God through the Holy Ghost exceeds anything human effort can achieve.
- Hebrews presents Christ as higher than the angels, with an altar above every other altar.

Are you thankful through God's grace and mercy that you can say goodbye to yesterday? You could say goodbye to the past. You could say, "Get behind me, Satan, in the name of the Lord. Pick up your weapons and flee." There's no diminishing return on God's grace and mercy. But his word tells us that it is new every single morning. It's not a scarce resource. It's not going to run out. But every single time, his mercy and grace is exponentially greater. Would you lift your hands across this house and just thank him for it for just a moment? Say, "Lord, I thank you for bringing me into your house of worship. I thank you for this great community of worshippers." And with my hands and my voice lifted high, I say thank you, Lord. I say thank you for removing my sins. I say thank you for bringing me out, Lord. And I thank you for the hope that you've given me. Oh, would you worship him just for a moment? Would you turn that into a mighty hand clap of praise across this house? And I say, "Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus. Yes, Jesus. Yes, Jesus." Keep that same spirit as you make your way back to your seats and you can be seated across this house. and I welcome each and every one of you to Sunday evening worship here at First Apostolic Church. Uh let me reiterate and echo the same sentiments. What a tremendous time we had with our uh junior and senior uh class on their letting us tag along on their high school uh spring break trip down to Florida. on Thursday morning, uh we put a battle plan together because some of those rides have uh wait times like an hour and two hours and three hours. And Sister uh Michaela Major, the mastermind of this plan, uh put all of the strategy and all of the details together at the right geographic spots to go to this ride and then next to this ride. But in order to do this, you got to get there before it opens. So, we met about 6:15 or we were supposed to. I was a few minutes late. Um, but we met and we got to the park, walked because the trimm wasn't even open yet. And we were at the gates before it even opened and we would rattle them every now and then, but you know, we're locked out. Uh but as soon I mean the sun wasn't even the sun was not even up yet and I mean because we're we're kind of crazy you know if you're going to do something why not just go ahead and go ahead and do it. So we waited there 45 minutes to an hour and when those gates open there's you know people trying to get to those those rides and they're checking one ticket after the other and you're just in great anticipation. Uh, I think we were trying to get to uh, I believe the correct names, the Veloca Raptor, uh, play on words from Jurassic Park, and it was a fantastic ride. But when the gates open, there's just kind of a a mad rush, and you know, the kids uh, you know, are running, and then all of the dignified adults that are there, they're kind of speed walking and in a in a rush. you know, they don't they don't want to uh overplay their hand too much about getting there early, but I think that's pretty silly. But, um, when we got in, me, Pastor Whitley, and all the, we just took off in a a full sprint, you know? I mean, we're there. I've been there an hour. I'm I'm running uh to get to where I'm going. And would you know that there were other people that didn't care for adults doing that to the extent that as I passed a few of them, I heard some unsavory language. You know, the Vid Angel would have, you know, blocked it out when they and I and I was like, they're like, I can't believe adults would run to a ride like that. And I'm just like, I'm here. I'm I'm a little bit crazy. Uh and you know, if I if I'm going to do something, why not do it full force? And this might be a little bit oversimplified. And you might say, "Oh, that's a little cheesy illustration, but I'm happy to be a part of a group of people that do things full tilt, full force. The world might call us a little bit crazy, and you know what? They're right. We are a little bit crazy." you know, they they thought the disciples, they said, "It's too early in the morning for them to be uh drunk." And he said, "Well, if you come back a little bit later, it might be a different No, they didn't say that. But, you know, the the world's going to have a lot of different impressions about us. The world's going to have a a lot of interpretations about how we worship and how we lift our hands and how we raise our voice and how we leap for joy and how we run around. And they may identify that as crazy. And guess what? 100% guilty. Because when I begin to think about what he's done for me, I can't just stay in place. I can't just go through the mundane and go through the motions and perform some type of ritual. I got to shout out, "Thank you, Father, for what you've done in my life." I've got to give joy for putting breath in my lungs, for keeping my family safe in different situations, for bringing about situations that he's come to pass and reconciled. and I just can't stay seated and I just can't stay quiet. So, if you're here tonight or watching online, I say it with all the love and false humility in the world. As Pastor Mcool said, we are unapologetically Pentecostal. And if you think I'm crazy, you know what? Your diagnosis is spoton. I'm a fool for Christ. I am a little bit crazy. And I'm honored to serve with a bunch of other crazy people that hey, if I'm going to go to church, I'm going to go for a reason. If I'm going to step into his house, I'm going to go with some expectation that God's going to show up and he's going to do something miraculous. How we derive that from running to the velociraptor, I have no idea. But just stand with me for our key text. Ezekiel 43:13. Where do we go from here? That's a good question. You might feel like you're on a roller coaster right now, but that's all right. Ezekiel 43:13. And what a tremendous sermon we heard this morning. And thank you, Pastor Mcool, for this for that. Ezekiel 43:13. And these are the measures of the altar after the cubits. The cubit is a cubit and hand breath. Even the bottom shall be a cubit, and the breadth a cubit, and the border thereof, by the edge thereof, round about shall be a span. And this shall be the higher, everybody say higher, higher place of the altar. And we'll unpack this verse in just a moment. But I want to preach to you from the topic tonight, the blueprint, the build, and the breath. when God shows up. If you could put your Bibles down and just right where you're at, could you pray that specific prayer over God's word tonight to sink deep down into our hearts and let us put it into practice in every capacity of our life? Let's pray now. Heavenly Father, we thank you tonight. Lord, we thank you for what you have already done on this day. Lord, we thank you for the miracles that you've already performed and the demonstration of your power thus far. But Father, tonight there is a hungry, passionate people, a a passionate pursuing people that are not satisfied or content with mediocrity, who are not giving up on the promises that are laid out from them. But father, we ask for your word to build our faith to increase our expectation in you to know that you're going to show up on this scene and through your divine touch, you're going to intervene in capacities that we don't even have the ability to comprehend or do on our own. Lord, we thank you and we praise you. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Everyone said, "Amen." And you can be seated across this house. the blueprint, the build and the breath when God shows up. Pastor Mcool a few weeks, maybe about a month ago, preached a great sermon about how our world is obsessed with instant gratification. We crave immediate answers, demand swift results, and pursue effortless success at times. But the enduring truth woven through the tapestry of scripture and white and whispered in the echoes of our own lives is that profound fulfillment, the lasting impact and the unmistakable touch of divine intervention. often emerge after a season of purposeful preparation, a delayed gratification, if you will, a period of dedicated building and unwavering faithfulness. And this certainly is easier said than in reality because this does not mean that we do not find ourselves frustrated or on the brink of at times wanting to quit in those seasons where we feel like we've done everything possible that we could do. Yet all we hear is Oh, some of you are getting angry right now by hearing that. And that this was after you went through a sevenstep process of pressing one, pressing two, pressing four, pressing seven, and then as you get to the conclusion, and some of you weird people like like this, like that music. But but then after that hold, you do all of that and through all that waiting only to get to that voice that says due to a high call to due to us experiencing a high call volume, your call cannot be completed at this time. Please leave your name and number and we'll get back to you. It's like you just opened. How can you be experiencing a high call volume? who already, you know, that it is already preset, already pre-recorded for them to say that. And that just brings a great deal of frustration. I remember when Kelly and I were dating and she was here and it looked like she was going to have one more day off of work and uh I called the airline to try to switch her flight. And if you've ever called an airline before, man, I hope God doesn't come back while I'm on the phone because my spirit is not where it needs to be. And I remember that music for about 40 to 45 minutes only to finally get in touch with someone. This was the time. This girl that I want to marry, I hadn't told her yet, but she she's going to get to stay here an extra day. And midway through the call, what happened? Somehow it timed out. The call died. Or maybe they just hung up and had to go through the process all over again. But that series of of waiting can be a great frustration. But as we embark on a journey to explore this fundamental principle, we see how God provides the divine blueprints for our life. And he calls us to participate in the build and then breathes life into our endeavors com firming our commitment in ways that transcend our understanding. Ezekiel 43 tells us the intricate measures, the specific measurements of the altar. And we know what the altar is. because it's a sacred place, a sacred place of sacrifice, of communion with God, a place of reconciliation to God. And at first glance, these details might seem less than captivating. A cubit here and a hand breath there. But within these seemingly mundane, specific lies a deep and enduring truth. Our verse tells us these are the measure of the altar after the cubits. The cubit is a cubit and a handbreath. The text points out that the cubit being described here isn't the standard cubit, the typical measurement of that time. The cubit includes, let me reiterate, an additional hand breath, an extra increment of measurement. Okay, cubit. In those times, there wasn't a standardized metric for measurements. But each human was the measurement. And one cubit was sixth hand breaths. One cubit equals six hand breaths. And the cubit was the measurement from the elbow down to the forearm. So it would be one 2 3 four five six hand breaths and that was one cubit. But the verse says one cubit and one more hand breath equaling seven. The cubit includes an additional hand breath an extra increment of measurement. A cubit is six. And that number six in the word of God represents humanity in its inherent weakness and incompleteness. Man and woman were created on the sixth day. So what this verse is telling us in Ezekiel's prophecy here is God isn't just asking for us to do what is in our comfort zone. He's not asking us what we are capable of doing in our humanity or what is in our means, but he's demanding that we go one more hand breath beyond our capacity, one more hand breath by faith to something that we're not going to be able to complete on our own. And it's it's a symbolic geometric measurement to indicate and symbolize that this extra hand breath is the seventh hand breath indicating leaving room for God, the seventh divine to intervene. He's demanding that we go beyond our capacity to where we will naturally fall short. He's inviting us to build with him in that divine handbreath which would give seven. And this number seven represents divine intervention and perfection. The point being in Ezekiel's prophetic vision of the tabernacle, keep in mind that Ezekiel, who's kind of a crazy guy if you read some of his stuff, uh Ezekiel is in Babylonian captivity and he's laying out a vision not just of a uh not just of a a tabernacle or uh not just, you know, this very ambiguous prophecy. But he's laying out the specific dimensions of how large the altar is going to be. And what he's doing through this is acknowledging that your humanity is going to fall short. And it's also a messianic prophecy that there is one going to come onto the scene that's going to intervene on your behalf. Your ability through this measurement Ezekiel is saying is going to reach a limit. But in the foundation of your life to have an extra handbreath to show that you're trusting in the divine to confirm your work to confirm your preparation and to confirm your faith that anything can happen when God is in the details of your life. So God calls us beyond our comfort zone, asking us to invest more than we think we can, asking us to invest more than what we actually are able to do, asking us to invest more than what we actually have. He's asking the question through the faith of this divine prophetic vision is can you begin something knowing that you do not have the control to actually finish it. Now, I'm not speaking tonight to somebody who haphazardly enters into uh they're here and there and doing this and doing that and I'm in this business and I'm changing my major tomorrow and this all this kind of uh confusion and disorganization in their life and they don't have any focus or not knowing what the next day is. That's not that's not what this is talking about. This is talking to people who live by the word of God, who before they go to war, as the word of God says, count the cost. Before they build a tower, they make sure that they have an architectural plan to get the resources and all of theistics together before uh starting it. This is he's he's talking to the one who sits in a multitude of counsel before making a decision or before making a plan. And he's talking to these individuals who serve God in every facet of their life. And he's saying in the details of your life when you build this altar, I want you to build it one cubit and a hen breath symbolizing that there's going to be a ceiling on your weakness. There's going to be a limit on your ability to understand what the outcome is going to be. But if you'll prepare and work by faith and believe and put God in the center of the foundation of your life, then I'm going to show up and I'm going to provide and I'm going to heal and I'm going to work in ways that you do not even have the ability to comprehend. So tonight, perhaps you found yourself in a situation where you're seeking resolution. May you're seeking reconciliation or trying to find closure in a situation and you've done every single thing that you can do. But yet there still lies an unknown. There still lies an uncertainty. There still sleepless nights and meals pushed back where you just surrounded with all of the stress and all of the uncertainty of life. We look at the story of Noah and we see this same principle and we look through it through the lens of faithfulness and divine confirmation. And God gives Noah a seemingly impossible task to build an ark, a massive vessel that will save his family and representatives of every living creature from a cataclysmic flood. Yeah, no big deal. Okay. But Noah, without question or hesitation, obeys. He simply trusts God and dedicates himself to the task. He spends years and decades century building this ark facing ridicule, doubt and probably immense frustration. You think that that on hold music is frustrating yet he remains faithful to the blueprint that God has given him. And then comes the moment of truth. After all of this building, after all of this public scrutiny, after all of the many hours and uh frustration and blood and sweat and tears going into the construction, probably doubt and weariness of this ark. And there's not even words that we could even formulate to even begin to describe the mindset of Noah after that long duration of time and the task that he has been given. Genesis 7:16 says, "And they that went in went in male and female of all flesh as God had commanded him, and the Lord shut him in." This verse is packed with significance. It's not just a logistical detail, but it's a divine act of confirmation. God after witnessing knowing unwavering faithfulness personally seals the door of the ark. He is saying Noah you've done every single thing that I ask but now I am taking over. I am that seventh handbreath. I am going to protect you. I'm going to protect your family and all of creation with this vessel. God confirms our faithfulness and then he takes over. He protects and guides us through the storms of life. Him shutting the door represented safety, security, and deliverance from the coming storm. It also represented Noah's the end of Noah's active role. Noah had done everything God had told him to do in his flesh. Noah had done followed every specific detail. Noah had built the ark. But there came a point where Noah's part was done. And then God took over by sealing the door. Now I'm going to protect you. He had built the ark. Now God would shut the door and navigate through the flood. And this is how God works in our lives. He calls us to build. He calls us to labor. He calls us to enter into difficult tasks. We pour our hearts and our souls into commitments. We face challenges and setbacks and moments of doubt. But if we remain faithful, if we continue to invest that extra handbreath of of of effort and that extra handbreath to acknowledge God in every single facet of our life, God will eventually shut the door. God will eventually show up. God sees every second. He sees every minute. He sees every moment of faithfulness. And whatever you're facing in your life, whatever storm or uncertainty or or challenge, when you center your life around the promises and the covenantial blessings of God, he's going to show up. He's going to provide and he's going to shut the door on some things in your life. He's going to pour out a blessing that you don't even have room enough to receive. And perhaps you've been praying for a certain thing in your life. Maybe it's seeking opportunities and you're seeking answers. You feel like you've done every single thing right. You've followed the blueprint and the architectural plan down to the detail, but you still don't hear anything. Or all you hear is that crazy waiting music that makes you go mad, but you keep praying and you keep pushing and you keep pressing and you keep trusting. God is and he will show up. So I ask you tonight, don't despair. Keep building, keep praying, and keep trusting. God is watching your faithfulness, and he will shut the door at the perfect moment, bringing confirmation and literal closure. Maybe you're struggling in a relationship, pouring your energy into communication, forgiveness, and reconciliation. somehow trying to get your family back together or get these interpersonal relationships or friendships back together or or whatever the case may be in your life. And you feel like you've done every single thing you can to mend the brokenness, but the conflict still persists. I ask you tonight to not give up. Do not give up. Continue to build bridges. Continue to offer grace. If God's grace, if God, if there's no diminishing return on God's grace, if it's not a scarce resource, it can't be in our lives either. If we've received uh forgiveness for our sins, we've got to be the ones that consistently forgive, consistently pour out grace, consistently pour out mercy, and seek God's guidance, and he will shut the door at the appointed time, bringing healing and restoration and a deeper connection than you ever thought possible. Never give up on the build. continue to invest your effort and trust in God's timing because you pray that prayer of Lord, I've I've centered my life around you. I I've given that extra hand breath in every capacity. I've been faithful to your house. I've been faithful to your word. I've been faithful to my neighbor. I've been faithful to my family. But God, I still don't hear you. I still don't feel you. Don't quit. Don't stop building. God is going to show up. God is going to intervene. When we look at the first miracle of Jesus, we as we look through all of his miracles, we can see blind eyes opening, walking on water, the dead being raised, nature listening to his voice, demons cast out, the multiplic application and provision of food to a massive amount of of people and we can reconcile all those things and they they make sense to us because there was a need. But when we look at the first miracle of Jesus in John 2, it can raise a lot of questions. For Jesus and the disciples attended a wedding and it says at the wedding they ran out of wine. Now this was the first miracle of Jesus and Mary Jesus mother told the servants whatever he tells you to do even if it's an extra hand breath go do it and if you'll notice there were six water stone containers six water jars and he told the servants that Jesus didn't go up to it and zap on all a sudden. It's why he told them they had work to do in the process of the miracle to be fulfilled. He told them to fill it up with water. Not halfway, not threequarters of the way, not till you feel like you're done pouring. He said, "Fill it up to the brim." And what this symbolized, these water stone containers, these water jars were the means for purification. in Judaism and that was what was used for the sanitation and the cleansing of hands. And we know the rest of the miracle that Jesus turned that those water stone containers into wine. Not just ordinary wine or not just wine to get by, but it said it was the very best. And what it symbolized was that there was something new in the midst of Judaism. There was something taking place. There was a new covenant taking place, a new dispensation taking place. And it was symbolic that you're not going to be able to receive salvation through the prophets. Every word we were built upon uh the the messianic prophecies to this point, prophesying about a Messiah, but all them are dead. No offense to them. Great words. God inspired, but they're dead. But there's a man who stepped onto the scene to those six water stone containers, a man named Jesus. And Jesus is the representative seven, that seventh handbreath coming onto the scene, making something ordinary extraordinary, turning the mundane into a miracle. And this would lay the foundation and set the introduction to all the other miracles that something is happening. Something is taking place that there is a Jesus on the scene who is here that even nature listens to his command and he's able to raise those from the dead. These six jars represented the old covenant, the law and human effort. They were necessary but insufficient. They provided the vessel, the potential, but they lacked the divine touch. That six symbolized human effort. It symbolized human limitation. They were stone, cold and unyielding. They were filled with water, ordinary and unremarkable. But human effort, while necessary, is insufficient without the transformative power of God. And here's where the miracle unfolds. The servants played a part. The obedience played a part. The preparation and the the carrying and the weight all played a part. The uncertainty of what was going to happen was part of the human emotion taking place during the introduction of Jesus' first miracle. But then Jesus steps onto the scene and provides that seventh hand breath. And it's a reminder that we can do our best. You can be in the will of God. You can work hard. You can be the most faithful person. But ultimately it's God who is going to provide the breakthrough. Because sometimes even in our humanity, we can start thinking, man, I've done everything that I can do and I've been faithful and I've been a tremendous servant yet God still doesn't hear my prayers or or nothing's happening. I'm not being rewarded in any type of capacity for my faithfulness. and and our human understanding, we can start thinking like this. And when you're thinking like that, it's because you're only building with a cubit. And you're not putting into place that there's a seventh hand breath that we've got to trust and have faith in and understand that if we will continue and not give up and continue to build that God is going to show up on this scene. Don't stop investing that extra hand breath of effort. So, I want to ask somebody tonight or compel somebody tonight to keep praying, keep seeking, keep trusting. Maybe there's some things in your life that you are thinking about, man, I I'm I'm giving up on praying for this or this person in my life is too far gone. This situation's too far down the tracks. There's nothing too far down the tracks when God is involved in the details. And don't you forget for one moment who is fighting on your behalf. You've been faithful. You're a prayer warrior. You have the power of God inside of you. There's nothing off limits. There's no cards off the table for what God is able to do in your situation. God's going to show up. He's going to take our ordinary efforts and transform them into something truly extraordinary. something that ex that exceeds our expectations and in turn glorifies his name. So I ask you tonight, where are you at in the building process of your life? Are you facing a challenge that seems impossible to overcome? Are you praying for a breakthrough? that just hasn't seemed to happen yet. I I reiterate, don't don't minimize who's fighting on your behalf. Perhaps you've been relying solely on your own strength, neglecting to seek God's guidance and power. Or perhaps you've given up on a dream or given up on a relationship or given up on a calling or feeling discouraged by the lack of immediate results. Perhaps you've been settling for good enough. This is my family situation or the mistakes that I've made. This is, you know, I've hit the ceiling of my life. This is this is all that I'll ever be able to do. Don't forget about what's happening when you build your life around God. If the praise team and musicians would come forward in John 19:30, we read these earthshattering words. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished." and bowing his head, he gave up his spirit. And when you read that seems like an ending, the ending of a sessation, but through the lens of faith, it's a pivotal turning point. Jesus declaration, it is finished. It was not a cry of defeat, but it was a triumphant pronouncement that the work of redemption was complete. It was an an announcement the sacrifice had been made. It was a proclamation that there was a debt that had been paid. you you I don't know if anybody listens to Dave Ramsey, but they have these people that come in uh and they're not too dignified when they pay off over $100,000 in their life when they put a plan together. And the Dave Ramsey is a financial guru who talks about u uh paying off your debts and and and not uh uh not owing too much money and all that. But he uh has these situations of people who follow his counsel and advice and he has this room in his studio where they give out the debtfree scream and these people that pay off their college debts or credit card debts where they'd made bad decisions or whatever the case. They get in that room after sometimes years of sacrifice and years of of planning and and pushing out every single cent or dollar toward that need to get everything paid off. And they get in that room and they don't just say, "Oh man, my debt's paid off." They call it the debt-free scream. They get in that room and they absolutely rejoice and scream. And when Jesus said it is finished, it was a proclamation that there was a debt. And I I tell you something greater than credit card debt. And that was the sin debt. It was the path to reconciliation between God and humanity. There was a road being paved. Stand with me. But there was a cru stay with me just a moment. There was a crucial connection being made. While his earthly ministry, his physical presence was coming to a close. The fullness of God's power was about to be revealed. His humanity was finished. But there was a promise, a divine intervention, the very breath of God that would empower believers to carry on Christ's work to perform, as John would say, even greater miracles. Now, there was a waiting process, but he poured out his power on on high. And the Holy Ghost is that supernatural power that exceeded all expectations and surpassing anything that we could achieve on our own. Therefore, it is finished on the cross is in a shout of defeat. It is finished wasn't the end. It is finished. Wasn't the end of the story. And it is finished isn't the end of your story. It's just the end of where you've done everything that you could do. And now God's power is about to be revealed in a miraculous way that you can't even anticipate. It was the completion. It was the foundation. It was the ultimate blueprint being fulfilled. It was the way to the ultimate build. It was the expansions of God's kingdom through the Holy Ghost. He said, "And ye shall receive power after the Holy Ghost comes upon you." One touch, one visit in his presence can turn your life absolutely around. And let me close with this. The dimensions of Ezekiel's altar were more than creating geometrical integrity for a physical structure. The details were a messianic prophetic vision of of a messiah to come who would step onto the scene and human failure, human weakness, and become the propitiation for our sins and the power to overcome any obstacle in this world. Ezekiel's altar may seem have seemed to be selected for the symmetry of the numbers in several parts, but the height of Ezekiel's altar exceeded that of any other. King Solomon's altar 10 cubits high. The tabernacle three cubits high. Herod's temple 10 cubits high. Ezekiel's temple 12 cubits high. Hebrews would tell us God who at various times in diverse manners even in the math spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets being made so much better than the angels as he hath by inheritance attained a more excellent name than they. He was created higher. And he would go on to tell us in Hebrews we have an altar, the cross where Christ was crucified, where those who continue to seek salvation by obeying the old covenant can never be helped. But under the system of the Jewish laws, the high priest brought the blood of the slain animals into the sanctuary as a sacrifice for sin. And then the bodies of the animals were burned outside the city. That is why Jesus suffered and died outside the city where his blood washed away our sins. You have an altar tonight and it's high and lifted up above every other altar. It's high and lifted up above every other thing, every other obstacle that might be present or circumstance in your life. He was made so much better than the angels. He has a name that's greater than any other name. And when you center your life around him, you've got that seventh hand breath where your humanity reaches a ceiling. Where your humanity reaches a stopping point, where you say, "God, I need you to show up right now. You've seen my faithfulness, but I need your help in this reconciliation. You've seen my due diligence. You've seen my hard work. You've seen the sweat of my brow, but God, I need you to show up for my family right now. I need a miracle in my body right now.
