Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Recap and Preface: Acceptable Words
- He recapped last week's lesson on tongues from the same book: Paul wrote to the Corinthians that he would not have them ignorant concerning spiritual gifts, and the types of tongues had been distinguished.
- The book's preface, read aloud each lesson: the preacher sought acceptable words, and the words of the wise are as goads and as nails fastened by the master of assemblies.
- Doctrine must be presented in a Christ-like manner — people answer in the tone in which they are spoken to, and ridicule may win an argument but lose a friend; endeavour to keep the unity of the Spirit until all come in the unity of the faith.
Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 12:1; Ecclesiastes 12:9-11; Ephesians 4:3, 13
The Question of the Godhead
- Trinitarianism, defined as three separate and distinct persons, raises unanswerable questions: a co-eternal Son would be as old as the Father, and a father implies a mother and a beginning.
- God declares that He stretched forth the heavens alone and spread forth the earth by Himself; no one directed His Spirit or taught Him.
- Asked who God was counseling with at creation, Paul answers: He works all things after the counsel of His own will.
Scriptures: Genesis 1:26; Isaiah 40:13-14; Isaiah 44:24; Isaiah 43:10; Ephesians 1:11
One God in Three Manifestations
- Oneness means sameness or singleness: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are one and the same God, manifest as Father in creation, Son in redemption, and Holy Ghost in the church — as one man can be a father, a husband, and a grandfather.
- Great is the mystery of godliness: God — not a second person — was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, and received up into glory.
- The Son was born to save His people from their sins; God took a fleshly body so that He could die and be a sacrifice for our sins.
Scriptures: 1 Timothy 3:16; Matthew 1:21
The Image of the Invisible God
- God is a Spirit and no man has seen God at any time; a spirit has not flesh and bones, so He wrapped Himself in human flesh.
- In Jesus dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; He is the image of the invisible God, the creator of all things, and God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself.
- To Philip's request to be shown the Father, Jesus answered that he who has seen Him has seen the Father — the child of Isaiah's prophecy is called the Mighty God and the Everlasting Father.
Scriptures: John 4:24; John 1:18; Luke 24:39; Colossians 1:13-17; Colossians 2:9; 2 Corinthians 5:19; John 14:1-9; Isaiah 9:6
The Sonship Has a Term
- Jesus is called the Everlasting Father, never the eternal Son; the office of the Son was for a designated purpose and a designated time.
- When the last enemy, death, is destroyed, the Son delivers up the kingdom to the Father and is himself subject, that God may be all in all.
- Adam Clarke's commentary is quoted with approval: the doctrine of the eternal sonship of Christ is anti-scriptural and highly dangerous, and the phrase eternal Son a self-contradiction.
Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 15:24-28; Luke 1:35

let's do it again praise the lord everyone we greet you tonight in that wonderful matchless magnificent magnanimous name of jesus what a joy it is to be in the house of the lord tonight and by the way pastor mccool is uh he had some beautiful words but um i think i may have some beautiful pictures uh yes sir uh pastor anthony and sister kelly they left the hospital and guess where they went the very first stop they brought callaway to my house and sister mccool and i got to be the don't mean to gloat if you take well maybe i do mean to gloat there's a picture of sister mccool and brother mccool holding that treasure and you know i got to i did a little a little calculating they brought him by today and we had him sitting beside brother mack and he uh calloway is one day old brother mack is 35 405 days old a slight difference do you have any more slides brother derek have any more slides beside that okay there he is there's the 97 year old and the one day old side by side along with sister mccool all right let's see what else we've got all right there he is callaway brooks mccool and what a joy what a lovely bundle it is what else do you have that's all well i had another one on my on my uh ipad of sister mccool and myself and i was holding pictures of callaway of a of uh uh eastern and eleanor and had all of them together there that only had pictures of the others but we had a great great time and of course we're beaming with joy thanking the lord and you know what it's like if you've got grandchildren i bet that's our first great grandson and of course we're very proud of calloway and i laid hands on and prayed for him today if it's the will of god to call him to preach that they protect him all the days of his life and let him preach the truth and win many souls to the lord and let me say this also uh we have been hearing some of the greatest preaching i find myself wanting to to re-preach or or or pick up the fragments that nothing be lost uh one of my favorite scriptures that is ecclesiastes 12 9-11 it says and whoso and moreover because the preacher was wise he still taught the people knowledge yay he gave good heeds and sought out and set in order many proverbs the preachers sought to find out acceptable words and that which was written was upright even words of truth the words of the wise are as goads and as nails fastened by the master of assemblies which are given from one shepherd the preacher sub acceptable words and it's very important you can use words words can wound that can be very very dangerous and if you need to find the right words for the right purpose pastor mark mccool the last two sermons i've heard him preach were so uplifting don't murder your miracle accept it and and and embrace it thank god for it they wanted to they wanted to murder lazarus even though he'd already been dead four days and now then they want to kill him again don't murder if you're not careful god will do something great for you and you'll wind up or we'll wind up killing what god's already given us and then the next sermon he preached to really bless me who will roll the stone away and the stone is going it may be big and heavy it may be too big for you it may be too big for your friends but it's not too big for god's earthquake and the angel the world that's thrown away whatever's in your life and then pastor whitley comes along and he preaches a master of the mard and boy that really stuck with me that when god told jeremiah to go down to the potter's house and i'm going to teach you something he didn't say go down to the preacher's house didn't go and say go to the elders house they go go to the potter's house and the old potter was making a vessel and right in the middle of making that vessel he just crushed it something was wrong with what he was about to do and so he just crushed it crushed and pastor willie told a whole lot about uh how it goes about and the technicalities of the of the uh the clay and the potter but when he started to get he made it the bible said he made another vessel you know there's a lot of us we we didn't work out the first time but the word of the lord came to jonah the second time saying and and what what a message and the reason i'm saying this i am trying to impress upon this great congregation what great encouraging words we're getting from this pulpit we are being so blessed pastor anthony the last sermon he preached was getting your second wind now that second wind means a renewed energy of endurance when you just feel like you've gone as far as you can go then somewhere down deep inside there comes a surge of of a second energy and of course he gave us several examples in the bible where the wind of the spirit blew and they were they were given second energy so i i hope i'm you understanding what i'm saying tonight they are they're blessing us we are being blessed by the word of the lord now let me ask you this we are in a series of lessons teaching from our little a book we write we wrote many years ago common questions concerning apostolic doctrine are you uh are you enjoying the teaching of this are you all right all right thank you i appreciate the the kindness and last week we taught on tongues that's one of the chapters in the book and we dealt with several things and i'm not going to re re-teach that but let me just say this that the bible the the question is does the bible not warn about tongues answer the apostle paul writing to the corinthian church in first corinthians 12 1 says now concerning spiritual gifts i would not have you ignorant the ignorance of which he speaks is not a negative statement he wants you not to be ignorant about the availability of the gifts and then he taught how the proper administration of these gifts were performed in the church and if you hear last wednesday night we we dealt with that and we also dealt with the negative arguments that the preachers preacher i told you about the preacher told me well tongue says is the least gift well the bible don't say that tongues is the least gift and a lot of preachers will will teach that but the bible don't teach that and paul said i thank my god i speak with tongues more than you all and i dealt with the uh the different types of tongues the evidential tongues they received the holy ghost the bible said far they heard them speak with tongues and magnify god and then there was there was a the tongue that edified the unknown tongue because the bible speaks up he that speaks the unknown tongue don't speak to man but you speak to god and you're not supposed to speak an unknown tongue in church and dominate a a church service if there's an if there's a message in tongues given once or twice not more than three times if there's not a god-given interpretation here to keep silence and the bible says the spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet and some i've i've heard i've heard folks speak in tongues in the flesh and so that was another type of tongues but uh we talked that thoroughly last wednesday night now then tonight's lesson we start out with the great subject of the godhead the godhead and and i i guess uh just about every uh lesson i teach i i need to i read my preface uh to to my book common questions and and i want to read it one more time to you and and this is very important with every chapter everything we everything we teach this needs to be and kept in mind each one of you let us remember this and this is what god led me to write many years ago way back in the 70s and the preface to my book says bible truths are beautiful and should be presented in a christ-like manner while jesus and his apostles were unyielding in their doctrine they were compassionate in their attitude we are thus instructed in ephesians 4 3 quote endeavoring to keep the unity of the spirit now notice what i'm saying this is scriptural endeavoring trying putting an effort out to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace you can use the the bible as a weapon to fight with and argue and debate over but that's not what it's for but it said to keep endeavoring that means to try hard to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace and in verse 13 it says till we all come in the unity of the faith anything as lovely as christian doctrine now please listen to what i'm saying anything as lovely as christian doctrine should not be marred by an unchristian attitude i can get up here and i can preach the truth but i can preach it with such a harsh attitude i i wrote an article on a request to the organization years ago technique that will technique that will in that will uh improve your preaching and one of my chapters in that uh was uh your tone zone what's your tone zone there was a study many years ago the government about people answering in the tone in which they are spoken to if somebody speaks to you in a in a sharp tone there's just a natural inclination for you to answer in that same way husbands and wives need to understand that and remember that be careful the tone you use they even uh experimented out on a ship with the um with the uh loudspeakers and they would call somebody on that speaker though they didn't even see the person they would answer in the same tone so you can set the tone and you're witnessing for the lord you can set the tone the way you correct your children you can you can correct your you can set the a a harsh attitude in the family with a husband and wife and especially in dealing with christian doctrine this writer does not pretend to have all the answers on this immense subject nor is it his intention to speak unkindly of those who disagree may doctrine not become a sword with which we wound but let it be a cohesive commodity of christianity which provokes us to study quote till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the son of god unto a perfect man until the measure unto the measure the stature of the fullness of christ so understanding what i am saying tonight is a is the greatest thing in the world we have to do is to witness to lost souls win men and women to christ and by all means we need to study when scripture says study to be quiet well if you study to be quiet you sure need to study how to be kind and there's a book written many years ago uh the the politics of ridicule and i mentioned that and someone in the church went out and bought that book but it was written many many years ago and it was talking about the art of politics and the politics of ridicule ridicule your your opponent cut him down cut her down and make him look small and and we're certainly living in that day but that's not the way you win souls to christ you don't by by debate and argument and cutting one another down we don't we don't use the politics or the the the tactic of ridicule if anything you try to be as kind as you can to everybody that you speak to about the lord what about the godhead the immensity of this subject creates an exciting challenge for every student of the bible every student in the bible should be interested in this subject it's difficult to find godhead-related subject matter free from discourteous remarks concerning the opposing view this subject should be dealt with in a straightforward manner but without ill will and unkindness now please again i'm pleading for us to understand that we all need to we talk about having the mind of christ and the attitude of christ even in um if a brother is overtaking the thought the bible said to go to that brother in the spirit of what you remember what it said meekness not in a spirit of arrogance or or a spirit of scolding but in the spirit of meekness so we need to be straightforward and know what we believe and able to explain it that's what we're doing now but also we don't need to do it in a scolding debating or belittling man you may win the argument but you'll lose a friend so always please keep this in mind now trinitarianism and monotheism seem to be the appropriate terms descriptive of the two opposite beliefs now understand what i'm saying the two opposite beliefs trinitarianism and monotheism which trend well we'll tell what what it means uh the belief that there are three separate and distinct persons in the godhead namely the father the son of the holy ghost is the most widely accepted definition of the word trinity separate and distinct means not the same therefore when we speak of the trinity we're speaking of three divine persons not one not two but three absolute distinct beings each having his own personality thoughts and cognition if the above or the aforesaid definition is accepted the term trinity would constitute a three-part godship or a three-god partnership if these divine people are co-equal co-eternal coexistent as is commonly believed then we have some unanswerable questions co-eternal means each is as old as the other which would make the son as old as the father if jesus existed in eternity as the son apart from the father then who was his mother common reasoning requires that to have a father one must also have a mother how did god come to about having a son in eternity if god created him then there was a space of time when god was not the father which would also necessitate a differentiation of of ages now these questions that i pose in this book is uh is is meant to to make us understand that uh terms do mean something and uh if they mean what the common language uh requires it to mean then you have some unanswerable questions question who was god talking to in in genesis 1 26 when he said let us make man well that's used a lot of times by many uh of those who who believe in the trinity doctrine that god was talking to his son uh when he said let us make man isaiah 40 13 and 14 says quote who hath directed the spirit of the lord or being his counselor has taught him a question now the isaiah the prophet is he he's speaking now notice the question who hath directed the spirit of the lord or being his counselor hath taught him verse 14 with whom took he counsel and who instructed him and taught him in the path of judgment and taught him knowledge and showed to him the way of understanding question the above description or the above scripture was totally intended to point out the absurdity of such a thought of anyone teaching god anyone god requiring advice from anyone isaiah 44 24. now listen to this isaiah 24 or isaiah 44 24 thus saith the lord thy redeemer and he that formed thee from the womb i am the lord that maketh all things that stretcheth forth the heavens alone that spreadeth and brought the earth by myself the suggestion that god had any help or consultation and the creation is an insult god declares himself to be a jealous god we see this nature revealed in isaiah 43 10 ye are my witnesses saith the lord and my servant whom i have chosen that ye may know and believe me and understand that i am he before me there was no god formed neither shall there be after me paul clearly gives the answer to that question of who god was counseling with in ephesians 1 11 in whom also we have obtained an inheritance being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things according to the council of his own will who was god counseling with himself who let me look at it again and whom we have obtained an inheritance being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will who was god counseling with his own will question what is meant by the term oneness huh they used to call us uh uh jesus only and uh well i i don't i don't get too upset over any name that's we're called but i like to tell them uh we're not just jesus only we're jesus everything we're jesus everything uh give that a what a bigger part what is meant by the term oneness the term oneness means sameness or singleness in other words the father the son and the holy ghost are one and the same now that that will sound a little bit drastic to folks who's never heard the doctrine of the oneness of the godhead but let me say it again the father the son and the holy ghost are one and the same the godhead is not comprised of three separate and distinct persons but one almighty god who manifest himself as the father in creation as the son in redemption and as the holy ghost in the church i am mark's father i'm sister mccool's husband and i'm callaway's great grandfather but i'm just one man occupying these positions so this great god manifested himself as the father in creation as the son in redemption and as the holy ghost in the church now let me prove this by first timothy 3 16 quote and without controversy without argument great is the mystery of godliness god was manifest in the flesh justified in the spirit seen of angels preached unto the gentiles believed on in the world and received up into the glory now let me ask you who was it that this scripture applied to when it said without controversy what is the mystery of godliness god not a second person in a trinity but god was manifest in the flesh he was justified in the spirit seat of angels preached unto the gentiles believed in the world and was received up in the glory now who fits that description but jesus christ he had matthew 1 21 let's conceive and bring forth the son thus to call his name jesus and he'll save his people from their sins uh he was seen by by by over 500 at one time after the resurrection and they watched him as he as when he spoke to them proving to them that he had risen from the dead he he had him to touch him uh he he fixed uh fish on the fire he ate with them and he manifested he he manifested himself to let them know that it was him that was raised from the dead but while he was talking to them the bible said he began he was he was carried away carried up and the cloud received him out of their sight as he lifted it was lifted up toward heaven and the angel appeared and said you men of godly white stand you hear gazing in the heavens this same jesus you see go away is going to come in like matter now dr luke tells this and i preached a message about that about the many infallible proofs and i tried to point out the uh the the the importance of such a highly educated man as uh as luke telling all these things that he witnessed and saw himself that it was true he was seen by over 500 at one time okay let's get back to first timothy 3 16 and then john 4 24 says god is a spirit luke 24 39 a spirit hath not flesh and bones jesus said touch me said a spirit don't have flesh and bones like i've got no man john john 1 18 no man has seen god at any time god is an invisible spirit so he chose to wrap himself in human flesh and manifest himself as the son in order to have a body with which he could die and be a sacrifice for our sins that's the reason jesus became a fleshly body so that he could give his life and die on the cross for your sins and my sins colossians 1 13-17 says who hath delivered us from the power of darkness and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear son in whom we have redemption through his blood even the forgiveness of sin who is the image of the invisible god the firstborn of every creature for by him were all things created that are in heaven and that on earth visible and invisible whether they be thrones or dominion or principalities or powers all things were created by him and for him who created everything jesus as god created everything and he is before all things and by him all things consist jesus is the image of the invisible god i saw something in the walmart parking lot sometime back uh they got my attention on the spare tire of a jeep it was a well it wasn't a hand scribbled it was a well painted sign it said jesus is god's selfie i thought that was pretty good jesus is god's selfie jesus is the in he is the image of the invisible god jesus's image of the invisible god colossians 2 9 for in him dwelleth all the fullness of the godhead bodily no no no notice that in him in jesus dwells all the fullness of the godhead bodily when it comes to a bodily form there are three bodies for in him dwells all the fullness of the god-head bodily ii corinthians 5 19 to which that god was in christ reconciling the world unto himself jesus was the fleshly embodiment of god now john 14 89 philip said to him lord show us the father and it surpasses us now in in in john 14 and i i need to i need to take a bible study on just the 14th chapter of john uh jesus said let out your heart be troubled you believe in god believe but also a name in my father's house are many mansions if it weren't also would have told you i go to a prayer place for you if i go and prepare a place for you i will come again and receive you unto myself to where i am there you may be also and uh said you they said uh we don't know where you're going what are you talking about and how can we know the way jesus said i'm the way the truth of the life no man cometh unto the father but by me and the question but now now now i'm breaking in the middle of this of the 14th chapter john philip says unto him lord show us the father and it suffice of us jesus said unto him now now listen to this now listen to this uh who was it uh i believe if my memory serves me right yeah it i believe you might have been brother brother jim r wood uh said brother mccool if um if you could look into heaven and and ask god or jesus a question would you get the same answer then as the bible said here well let's look at the question of the answer philip saith unto him lord show us the father and the suffice of us philip said and jesus said unto him have i been this a long time with you and yet have i been so long time with you and yet hast thou not known me philip he that hath seen me has seen the father glory i i have i've i've heard it explained that uh well he was talking about the likeness but the likeness that the bible said that the husband and wife would be no more twain there'll be one one flesh and so that's the way it is in unity well i'll tell you right now when you see me you don't see sister mccoy how again i'll guarantee you when you see i can't say well uh have i been so long when you've seen me you've seen sister mccoon no way no way i believe in the unity of the husband and wife and being together in unity but uh th this affirms something totally different show us the father and it suffice of us these verses jesus was affirming himself to be the father thus confirming the prophecy concerning him in isaiah 9 and 6. now let's go to isaiah 9 and 6 and read it this was prophecy concerning jesus many years centuries before he was actually born for unto us a child is born unto us a son is given the government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called wonderful counselor the mighty god the mighty can there be more than one mighty god the mighty god the everlasting father the prince of peace jesus was called the everlasting father but he was not called the everlasting son now you'll hear preachers preach this and they'll talk about the eternal son of god the everlasting the everlasting or the eternal son of god the office of son was for a designated purpose and a designated time matthew 1 21 and she shall bring forth a son and thou shall call his name jesus for he shall save his people from their sins the sonship office was for the purpose of offering a perfect sacrifice for him to save his people we see this office abolished in first corinthians 15 24-28 quote then cometh the end when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to god even the father even when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power for he must reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet verse 26 the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death for he hath put all things under his feet but when he saith all things are put under him it is manifest so he is accepted which did put all things under him now he must reign as the son until the last enemy is destroyed now uh i use this illustration sometimes uh down on the beach uh they they've got big old towers there the lifeguards sit there and they they watch over if anybody gets in trouble they they they're trained uh swimmers and they've got the apparatuses they can throw to them and and they are they're called lifeguards or lifesavers and if anybody gets in trouble they throw them something that or go and go get them but now when the season's over and winter comes and there's nobody left on the beach he's no longer a lifeguard there's nobody left to say there's nobody out there to save he sure would look strange out there in in on the little tower and not a person there to say well when the last enemy is destroyed which is death then the son is going to give up that position of he will no longer be a savior because the last enemy has been destroyed and when all things shall be subdued unto him then shall the son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him that god may be all in all jesus prayed for the the glory that he had with him before the world was the time will come we'll we we will not need a savior because the last enemy is destroyed the last enemy which is death now you hear me and pastor mark mccool we we quote a lot from uh adam clarke and he wasn't jesus name one to pentecost but he's been dead i think 200 years and but he wrote one of the greatest sets of commentaries and i've got to set sex volume this takes up that much space on my uh bookshelf at home and and now i've got it on my computer and i've got got his and many others and and i like what he wrote about this verse of scripture the eternal psalm because you'll hear this on the radio they'll preach and we'll talk about the eternal and the eternal the everlasting son well he was called in isaiah 96 the everlasting father unto us a son is born unto us a child is given but he was called the everlasting father here's what adam clark writes about the eternal sonship luke 1 35 and the angel answered and said unto her the holy ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee therefore also the holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the son of god now that was scripture now adam clark is giving his comment and his view on this scripture quote it is true that to jesus the christ as he appeared among the men every characteristic of the divine nature is sometimes attributed without appearing to make any distinction between the divine and human nature but is there any part of scripture in which it is plainly said that the divine name of jesus was the son of god question here i trust i may be permitted to say with all due respect for those who differ from me that the doctrine of the eternal son that the eternal sonship of christ is in my opinion i'm quoting adam clark noted bible commentator in my opinion anti-scriptural and highly dangerous this doctrine i reject for the following reasons one i have not been able to find any express declaration in the scripture concerning it to if christ be the son of god as to his divine nature then he cannot be eternal for son implies a father and a father implies in reference to some presidency and time if any nature to if not in nature father and son imply the idea of generation and generation implies a time in which it was affected and time also antecedent to such generation three if christ be the son of god as to his divine nature then the father is of necessity prior consequently superior to him again if this divine nature were begotten of the father then it must be in time i.e there was a period in which it did not exist and appeared when it began to exist this destroys the eternity of our blessed lord and robs him at once of the godhead to say that he was begotten from all eternity is in my opinion absurd and the phrase eternal son is a positive self-contradicting a entity is that which has had no beginning nor stands in any reference to time son supposes time generation and father and time also antecedent to such generation therefore the conjunction of these two terms sun and eternity is absolutely impossible as they imply essentially different and opposite ideas the enemies of christ's divinity have in all ages avail themselves of this and cautious method of treating this subject and on this ground have ever had the advantage of defenders of the godhead of christ this doctrine of eternal sonship destroys the deity of christ now if this deity be taken away the whole gospel scheme of redemption is ruined on this ground the atonement of christ cannot have been of infinite merit and consequently could not purchase pardon for the offense of mankind nor give any right to or possession of any eternal glory the very use of this phrase is both absurd and dangerous therefore let all those who value jesus and their salvation abide by the scripture this doctrine of eternal security as it has been lately explained in many a pamphlet and many a paper and magazine i must and do consider as an awful heresy would you stand your feet with us we'll begin next week with this question does jesus does jesus give up the kingdom to the father and and we've personally answered that but we'll be giving you scripture this next week does jesus give up the kingdom if jesus and the father are one then how did stephen see jesus on the right hand of god these are some questions we're going to be answering question is the oneness belief in the events at the baptism of jesus by john reconcilable you know jesus was baptized by john and a dove a descendant from heaven landing on him and how does that reconcile with scripture who is the father of jesus these are some of the questions we'll be we'll be dealing with we want to be in prayer for uh this coming week don't forget the program the the children they will bless you i'm telling you they what a job they do is that they i i enjoy so much the cameras that we have that we can watch them go up and down the the halls of the of the school and the teachers what a j what a job they are doing i'm telling you the truth uh it's amazing if you were here and and and and saw all the display the other night uh at the display you you would be amazed so we thank god for our children and remember our sick folks let's remember sister brian and for all the others in the church that's got illnesses that god would touch their bodies father we thank you tonight for the blessed word of god we pray lord that you will take this word let it sink deep into our hearts lord let us grow in the spirit of the lord may we grow in the knowledge of the lord jesus christ i pray for all of our saints especially those that are elderly and in poor health we pray for
