Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
David gat him a name
- Again departing from the Sunday school lesson, he calls attention to 2 Samuel 8 and reads verse 13: David gat him a name when he returned from smiting the Syrians in the valley of salt, being eighteen thousand men.
- A name means something: Abraham Lincoln is remembered as honest Abe; Samson by his strength; Solomon by his wisdom; and Jezebel — whose painted face at the window is read from 2 Kings 9 — by her seductiveness and her end.
- He hopscotches the chapter without reading it verbatim: the Philistines subdued, Moab measured with a line, the king of Zobah's chariot horses hamstrung, garrisons set in Syria, and the shields of gold and exceeding much brass dedicated to the Lord.
- Those were the deeds the nations counted greatness; a man can also make himself a name as a tightwad who leaves no tip, or as a gossip — you can develop a name for yourself.
Scriptures: 2 Samuel 8:1-13; 2 Kings 9:30
Thy gentleness hath made me great
- David's own account of himself is read from 2 Samuel 22: 'He teacheth my hands to war... thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation, and thy gentleness hath made me great.'
- 1 Kings 15:5 is read with its comma left in: David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord all the days of his life — save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite; one deed can mark a name for the rest of a life.
- Absalom, who stole the hearts of the people by undermining his father, reared himself a pillar in the king's dale because he had no son to keep his name in remembrance — but the pillar did not erase the infamy of the discord sower.
Scriptures: 2 Samuel 22:35-36; 1 Kings 15:5; 2 Samuel 18:18
Called by a new name
- Isaiah 62 is read: the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all the kings thy glory, and thou shalt be called by a new name which the mouth of the Lord shall name — a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord.
- No more termed Forsaken, nor the land Desolate, but Beulah, for the Lord delighteth in thee; as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee.
- The whole Old Testament moves toward the savior of the world, and toward Isaiah 9:6: his name shall be called Wonderful, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.
- Isaiah 54 is read alongside: fear not, for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth; thy Maker is thine husband; for a small moment I hid my face from thee, but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee.
- He turns the prophecy home: Isaiah is talking about this church on Pleasant Ridge Road in Knoxville — about everyone who has taken his name.
Scriptures: Isaiah 62:2-5; Isaiah 9:6; Isaiah 54:4-8
His name called over me
- Acts 15 is read: God at the first did visit the Gentiles to take out of them a people for his name, that the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles upon whom my name is called.
- His own name was called over him in a floodway ditch in 1948, when he was baptized in that muddy river in the precious name of Jesus; and just yesterday or today he watched on his iPad as Pastor Mark McCool baptized a little girl the same way, and a Gentile had the name of Jesus called over her.
- Philippians 2 is read: he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross, and God has highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.
- He closes standing with Matthew 1: 'Thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins... they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.'
- No longer the sharecropper or the cotton picker he was — he has got himself a new name, and anyone who has not had that name called over them can have it.

praise the lord everyone we greet you tonight in that wonderful name of the lord jesus christ that great high and holy name that's a name that's above every name it's so great to be in the house of the lord um first apostolic church um i whispered to pastor i got here a little bit early and looks like a lot of folks getting to jump on that snow they're staying home and i've heard it said that 19 drops of rain will keep 20 people out of church but give it five more minutes and the house begins to fill up and the door's open and and sometimes i'm i'm trying to get in the parking lot and there'll be three cars in front of me i have to wait on to get in the parking lot but that's good news and it's so good to see each and every one of you in this service tonight uh i'm again departing from the sunday school lesson a subject that has been on my mind and my heart you read the bible form well for been preaching it 73 years and you read it and you read it and you read it and then one day you read something you've read a hundred times and it it leaps out at you and there's some things that that i felt like talking about tonight in our study of course this is bible study not evangelistic service but every service is evangelistic if you want to seek the lord that's what this place is all about i'm going to call your attention to the book of 2nd samuel chapter 8 and i'm going to read verse 13 and we'll come back later on and read more from that same chapter verse 13 and david gave him a name when he returned from smiting of the syrians in the valley of salt being 18 000 men i i've heard a couple of our ministers lately say they did not speak the king's language and they'll use another translation and i'm not against that but i'll translate this one for you if you don't understand the king's language david get him a name that word get means that david got him a name that gadgets put a g-o-t-c-g-a-t david got him a name when he returned from smithing of the syrians in the valley of salt there's a lot to be said about a name um the bible said a good name is rather to be chosen than than great riches and uh there's a lot of names that have earned for because of their behavior if i say abraham lincoln what's abraham lincoln known for honest abe and he was considered a an honest president of course george washington stands out because he was uh the first president and uh there are other names throughout the bible that and throughout our history that stands out and means something i was a little bit amused some years ago i read in the newspaper there was a fellow that was enamored with uh the name billy sundy and billy graham and i don't know he may have been a preacher but uh he was so enamored by the name of billy sundy and billy graham but he went before the court and had his name changed to billy he kept the the last name but he wanted his name to be billy because of billy sunday and billy graham well i'll clue you you can steal a man's hat but you don't get his brains uh you can talk about albert einstein all you want to and you can go to court and change your name to einstein and i got news for you you're not going to be as smart as einstein there are other names in the bible that stand out samson was a strong man probably the strongest man that ever lived and he is known by that name as strong man samson sampson my my brother wrote a song about that about samson being strong and then what do you think of when you hear the name uh solomon uh the wisdom of solomon you hear somebody sometimes refer to somebody in a rather uh exaggerated term uh he's got the wisdom of solomon so he got him a name of being wise and then there's another name in the second kings chapter 9 and verse 30 and when jehu was come to jezreel jezebel heard of it and she painted her face and tired her head and looked out at a window what do you think of when you hear somebody say she looks like a jezebel what is the jezebel what comes to your mind in the the book of proverbs chapter 7 the scripture says of of a bad woman and it speaks of a woman with the attire of a harlot the attire of a harlot it gives a long list of things of a seductive woman that was trying to seduce a young man and the bible said one of the things said she had the attire of a harlot one preacher was preaching about uh how some women dress and so forth and father got offended he said you call my daughter a harlot he said i didn't say she was a heartless that she dressed like a harlot so you can dress in such a manner as to to develop a name for yourself brother pastor whitley gave us a new slant on the the name thomas uh when you say thomas what do you think of doubting thomas brother whitley did a great job of giving us another angle on that but normally you think of thomas somebody's always doubting doubting he's a he's a doubting thomas so uh he you you can earn for yourself a name david david made a name he gave a name and we're going to talk a little bit about what a name he had and how come him to have it of all the great deeds of david the following are the things for which he got him a name now you can think of a lot of things that david did but the scripture that we're reading from from isaiah attributes david the following actions from which he got a name david got a name and and i want you to get it in your mind what we're talking about you can develop a name for yourself you can develop a name of being a scrooge tight wad right now i have the hardest time going to a restaurant and most of us use a credit card anymore and uh i always have to tell the waitress or the waiter sir or ma'am i'm going to be putting my tip on my credit card because i don't want you to find an empty table and think that that old man was such a skin flint that he was too tight to leave a tip and uh because i don't want that name i i don't i don't want the name to be that he's such a tight what he he he don't he don't leave a tip and some people are known as a gossip they they talk so much and some folks say things that they never thought about and they opened the mouth and before they put their mind in gear of all the great deeds david did the following are things for which he got his he got this particular name in second samuel eight and i'm gonna hopscotch and and uh not going to read the scriptures verbatim but uh this it's all there david smoked the philistines and subdued them and i want you to listen where he got his name where he got a name and he smoked moab measured them with a line casting them down to the ground even with two lines measured he to put to death and with one full line to keep alive and so the moabites became david's servants and brought gifts now he he conquered moab and he he made all the people lie down and he took a a line a rope and he measured it not in the the number of people but to make sure he was going to be fair he stretched the line there and he had had three lines and two of those lines were marked for death i mean it was uh to me it sounds a pretty cruel thing if you uh if you take prisoners of war or what have you and you lined them up and he laid them on the ground and two lines of them were designated they were going to be slaughtered and he slaughtered the two lines and the other line he kept alive and they became his servants and they they paid him taxes and they gave him gifts david smote also had an easer the son of rehob king of zog z-o-b-a-h as he went to recover his border at the river euphrates and david took from him a thousand chairs several hundred horses 20 000 footmen david haughed all the chaired horses but res but reserved for them a hundred characters now that to haul a horse is to cut the tendon in his back legs so that he he he he has to hop for the rest of the he's no no no longer uh good for anything he can't pull a plow you can't ride him as a as a ride but it's a very cruel thing to to cut that tendon in his back two back legs but that's what david did to all those except the certain ones he kept and then david put garrisons and when the syrians of damascus came to a secure hadenaeser king of zoab david slew of the syrians two and twenty thousand men you you talk about a bloodletting man you talk about somebody that that that took revenge then david put garrisons in syria and damascus and the syrians became servants to david and brought gifts and the lord preserved david whethers wherever he went and david took the shields of gold that were on the servants of hadenezer and brought them to jerusalem david took exceeding much brass the bible said which also king david did dedicate unto the lord with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all the nations which he subdued of syria of moab the children of ammon and of the philistines and of amalek and of the spoils of haden israel's son of rehob king of zorba and dave now the next after all these things he did and david gave him a name when he returned from smiting of the syrians and the valley of saul being eighteen thousand men the above verses the above deeds for which others thought david was a great man now david didn't call himself great because of this but those for whom he had fought and those who were viewing him uh heathen kings nation after nation king after king after king and they said what a man he got himself he get himself a name and this is what they considered a a great man notice for which david thought himself great now i've read you these uh horrible things that happen in war war is a terrible thing but now let's listen to what david says uh what he wants his name to be and ii samuel 22 35 and 36 david said he teacheth my hands to war so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms sounds like he's really boasting how strong he is thou has also given me the shield of thy salvation and thy gentleness hath made me great let it sink in just a moment all of those things we just read was the product of war necessary violence is going to be in every war but when david is talking about himself yes he says the lord's given me the shield of my salvation he's taught my hands to ward so that the bowl of steel is broken by my arms thou has also given me the shield of thy salvation and thy gentleness hath made me great did not claim greatness due to his violence and his victories and war and slaying of goliath killing a lion and a bear with his bare hands incidentally he had to tell that to saul to get permission to go fight goliath but when it came to david talking about himself he speaks of god's gentleness hath made me great isn't that that really stood out with me how fabulous and how beautiful it is with all the violence that he was capable of and and was able to to accomplish yet he claimed god's gentleness was the greatest thing that ever happened to him i want to tell you something that that precious savior of ours his gentleness well we'll talk about that a little bit more david because david did that which was right in the eyes of the lord and turned not aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life and that great save only in the matter of uriah the hittite of all the great things david did and he said the gentlest has made me great and first kings 15 5 said david did that which was right in the eyes of the lord and it turned not aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life wouldn't that be great if there was a period there instead of a comma look at that scripture if you would because david did that which is right in the eyes of the lord and turned not aside from the things that commanded him all the days of his life let's put a period there no there's no period there there's a comet we're talking about what happens to your name save only in the matter of uriah of the hittite it is so shocking and so amazing you can live uh a hundred years and do all kinds of good things and you can do one deed there'll be a mark against your name the rest of your life are you following me david got him a name david got the one thing he did everything right except in the matter of uriah you know the story of uriah here's another name let's talk about just a moment second samuel 18 18 it was david's son now absalom and his lifetime had taken and reared up himself a pillar which is in the kings dale for he said i have no son to keep my name in remembrance and he called the pillar after his own name and it is called unto this day absalom's place now absent was a very fair young man he he was the specimen of masculine masculinity and he was so handsome he had beautiful hair it was a national holiday he cut his hair once a year and the bible even tells you how much it weighs they weighed his hair out and and um i preached a message one time uh and i i read that and i looked it up how much had the hair weighed and however much it weighed i talked about having that much hair but not a lick of sense and you can have you can have beautiful hair and you can uh do all kinds of things like that but if you're not careful you'll not have the brains to go with it jezebel when she heard jehu was coming she knew that there was anger in his heart and she looked out the window from upstairs and the bible said she painted her face one version said she painted her eyelids and and said she she she painted her nails and she tired her she fixed her hair in a special way the bible doesn't say what kind of what it was but she painted her face fixed her nails and did her hair up exactly right and she looked out the window because she thought she could be seductive enough that jehu would spare her but god had already said that the the dogs would lick her blood and when jayla got there she looked up there and gave him that big seductive smile you know with a beautiful painted face and and now you know now you can dye your hair but you can't deny your face and but she was trying to seduce him and when she looked out and he looked up there and he said all you have to say throw out that window can you imagine this uh king's wife the wife of ahab the the king that god despised more than any other king and and she was the one that led him into idolatry into baal worship and it turned a nation of god's people into idolatry and and she'd been able to accomplish whatever she wanted by her beauty and her seductiveness and when he said throw her can you imagine as she fought and clawed and screamed and hollered and screamed and they her servants were under a command and they had to throw her out the window down below and when she hit the the pavement below of course it must have hurt her very bad wounded her badly her uh painted face and her eyelids and her fingernails and and all the beauty that she had painted on there she lay in a puddle of blood and here came the wild dogs and they ate everything about her but the palms of her hands and the soles of her feet what a name she bought for herself by her behavior now let us let us go on now absalom he was a handsome man and he stole the hearts of the people he had quite a personality after his father saved his life actually he he slew his brother or had him slain and uh he was gone from the uh from the kingdom for a couple of years and david mourned for him every day and he finally got him back in and when he got him back uh absent found him a place near the the post of the entering end of the city and when people would come to be uh judged by david and uh that the the king of those days had the power of life and death and he would he would tell them now my daddy isn't doing you right your daddy is not being fair with you my daddy is not being fair with you now if i was king this is what i would do and the bible said he stole the hearts of the people it's it's it's bad to develop a name of being a deceiver and an underminer and a and a discord sower that's one of the things the bible said for which there is no remedy he that saw a discord among the brethren that's a terrible thing to have the name of being a discord sower and that's what he was he was a discord sower and and he he talked against his father even though his father loved him dearly and he stole the hearts of the people by undermining his father what and the bible said he had no sons of his own so he had a he had a tower built and and absent his laptop had taken and reared up for himself a pillar which is in the kingsdale for he said i have no son to keep my name in remembrance and he called the pillar after his own name and he called it absalom's place just because he erected a tower and called it after his name did not erase the infamy and the skullduggery and this discord so on for the bible tells the truth how it was and how he died we can develop a name for ourselves and and it can follow us to our grave let's continue on in isaiah 62 2-5 and the gentiles shall see thy righteousness and all the kings thy glory and thou shalt be called by a new name there's a new name written down in glory and his mind oh yes it's mine oh hallelujah the gentiles shall see thy righteousness and all the kings thy glory and thou shall be called by a new name which the mouth of the lord shall name now we're talking about leaving an old name behind and developing a new name that erases all the infamy and all the bad and all the negative because god has intervened and there's a you're going to get a name david god i've got a new name give the lord a hand clap [Applause] thou shall also be crowned thou shall also be a crown of glory in the hand of the lord and a royal diadem in the hand of thy god now if you read the old testament you need to understand that much of the old testament in the life of israel and the dispensation of time it was every bit leading up to the messiah the savior of the world the king of kings and lord of the lord and you can you can liken the the enslavement in egypt to people being enslaved in sin and and all the time by that the prophecy is constantly referring to jesus christ and we later find this out isaiah 96 it is one of the greatest prophetic scriptures for until the child is born and thus the son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulders name should be called wonderful counsel mighty god everlasting fault prince of peace it's all moving toward jesus christ so now now keep this in mind about getting getting the name we're moving not just the history of the old testament but we're talking about the prophecy telling us what's going to happen in the future thou shalt also remember he's going to give us a new name and thou shall be a crown of glory in the hand of the lord and a royal diadem in the hand of thy god for he hath made us kings and priests unto god and his father thou shalt no more be termed forsaken you hear folks tell about how lonely and forsaken and despondent and they've tried alcohol they've tried drugs and they've tried sex they've tried pleasure of all kind they've tried all kind of pleasures but it's left them empty and void and sad and depressed and they don't know what to do well instead of that thou shalt no more be termed forsaken neither shall thy land any more be termed desolate but thou shalt be called hefzabaya and thy name beulah for the lord delighteth in thee and thy land shall be married i'm talking about a new name now no no no longer a barren land young preacher don't you go to knoxville that's a preacher's graveyard it's a burnt over nobody i tried to build a church there 20 years ago not to starve it don't go anywhere those were his words a great old preacher a great man and but don't go that's thou shalt no more be termed forsaken neither shall thy land any more be determined or be termed desolate but it said thy land is going to be called beulah for the lord delighteth in thee and thy land shall be married now that's unusual wording thy land shall be married now he's comparing the land in our lives now we we preach this time and time again that marriage is a symbol of the church in christ paul said i speak a great mystery but i speak concerning christ in the church this is why we need to understand when you stand at this altar and you take the the the marriage vow and you promise until death us do part you better mean that don't come up here so you're going to try marriage out one woman said to her husband honey see that man right there he'd make you a perfectly good first husband that has an ominous tone to it don't it make you a perfectly good first husband it shouldn't be a first husband it should be a husband and you should come to the altar for repentance now i don't mean to embarrass anybody and you know what i preach about the faces were backwards you know what i preach about god forgives and and and god god uh hammered out another way i i realize that but let me tell you something all the heartaches you can avoid if you'll find out what god wants for you and your life and and don't don't get married on infatuation and and excitement but you pray and get the mind of god and make sure that when you say i do you really do mean it for as a young man marrieth a virgin so shall thy sons marry thee and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride so shall thy god rejoice over things give me excuse me please i i can't help i advise preachers don't get to enjoy your preaching too much you'll bore the people to death i don't mean to do that but this word thrills me it i i i've read it so much so long and yet it's it's like a it's like a a fresh thanksgiving dinner every time i start to read it for as a young man merit the virgin so shall thy sons marry thee and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride so shall thy god rejoice over thee i just could not believe it and i still tell her almost there honey i i i don't know how i got you i have the lord and here i know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but they beheld her in their whole high school she was voted the most attractive girl in her school and you think i forgot that i've got that on my computers my wallpaper got her picture in the annual her senior year picture and uh my my older brother dawn the first time he saw her bill my goodness what a good look and not but not only was she good looking but she had a good heart she held and and i thought i thought it was the most fabulous arrangement her daddy was a holiness preacher not apostolic now pentecost they called himself holiness back then in fact he pastored the fork mountain holiness church he was an old mountain preacher up in the mountains of north carolina and and if you think that it was a negative you're mistaken because i thought it was so uh romantic and so picturesque here i found a a young girl whose daddy was a holiness preacher and come to find out she'd been baptized in jesus name had been brought up in the truth and you talk about a young man rejoicing when he saw her what he had as a young man maratha virgin so shall thy sons marry thee and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride so shall thy god rejoice over thee he looks at his church and he's not angry with us he now what we used to be is one thing but i get me a name i get me he gave me a new name oh give the other hand clap hallelujah now when i the second date you've heard me tell a thousand times more or less the second date i asked her to marry me and you know all the stories i've told and nobody in this world could answer i i didn't know what what i didn't know if she'd say yeah are you out of your mind yeah that we've only been together this is the second day are you an idiot well i didn't know what she was going to say she was well educated she was getting ready to enter in east tennessee uh college and and she was all set to have a career and and i said um uh girl i like you she said i like you too just about like a little school girl you know here she was i guess 18 and beautiful and i said honey i love you and it got deathly quiet and i said well okay can't you return that she said i love you too and i said honey i was getting more mushy all the time my language kept on getting thicker you know and i said honey i'm gonna ask you something i never asked another girl in my life will you marry me a girl you'd been out with one time before but you knew i that don't forget the urban highway of course and and and will you marry me and she didn't yell it but she whispered yes anytime dear god what words who could have said something like that i don't know if she thought she was going to bless me out and i said well next week be all right oh no no no no next week and we had more fusses the last few months than because she wouldn't set a date to to get married and i finally we broke up one time because she wouldn't set a date for us to get married i said if you don't love me enough to marry me christmas you don't love me enough to marry me two christmases for now and uh i got up and walked out of her brother's house didn't say goodbye or anything and and so i went i was living with bobby and shirley and i got home and boy what a what what what a chance i was taking and when i got home the phone rang she said bill why did you leave like that i said what do you mean she said you didn't even say goodbye i said well i've said all i've got to say if you're not if you don't love me enough to marry me christmas you don't love me enough to marry me two christmases from now and i think we're wasting our time y'all come on to church and we'll worship the lord together but um she said but i do love you good enough to marry you yeah i said you say you will but you won't she said i will marry you christmas boy that and we were married the next june the bridegroom rejoices over the bride so shall thy god rejoice over thee let's compare the above verses with isaiah 54 4-8 fear not for thou shalt not be ashamed neither be thou confounded for thou shalt not be put to shame for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth and shall not remember the reproach of thy wilderhood anymore for thy sake is thine husband the lord of hosts is his are you listening to me are you listening to what the word said it you don't need a lot of comments fear not for thou shalt not be ashamed neither be thou confounded for thou shalt not be put to shame for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth and shall not remember the reproach of thy willhood anymore for thy maker is thine husband the lord of hosts is his name and thy redeemer the holy one of israel the god of the whole earth shall he be called for the lord that called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit and a wife of youth when thou was refused saith by god for a small moment now listen to this for a small moment have i forsaken thee just a little bit two minutes it took me to drive from uh piney grove street to over to my and then i was taking a big chance a moment i forsaken thee but with great mercy will i gather thee did you know i'm talking to you tonight do you understand who we are i'm talking about his bride isaiah's taking this is prophecy he's talking about 50 20 pleasant ridge road knoxville he's talking to all those all over the world that's taken his name in a little wrath i had my face from thee for a moment but with everlasting kindness will i have mercy on thee saith the lord thy redeemer oh glory hallelujah i've got to say read that one again quickly in a little wrath i hid my face from there for a moment but with everlasting kindness will i have mercy on thee saith the lord thy redeemer we're talking about i got myself a name acts 15 starting at verse 14. simeon had to declare how god at first did visit the gentiles to take out of them a people for his name the gentiles that you and me and to this agree the words of the prophets as it is written after this i will return and will build again the tabernacle of david which has fallen down and i will build again the ruins thereof and i will set it up that the residue of men might seek after the lord and all the gentiles upon whom my name is called seth the lord what they say give them a hand claire and david got him a name david gave him a name i've got a name because the bible says that the residue of men might seek after the lord and all the gentiles upon whom my name is called my name his name was called over me in floodway ditch in 1948 when i was baptized in that muddy river in the precious name of jesus just yet just uh yesterday or today i i looked on my ipad and and watched pastor mark mccool hold that precious little girl uh eastern and and she you could tell she was frightened at first but when he put her down in jesus name she came up with a little head waves and cried and we begin praising god because a gentile had the name of jesus called over her and now then she can claim all the victory and glory and power and all the inheritance that goes with the name of jesus i got myself a name philippians 2 8-11 and being found in fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the cross wherefore god has highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name and he gave that name to me he gave that name to me wherefore god all sorteth highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name that at the name of jesus every knee should bow of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth matthew 1 21-23 would you stand your
