Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
The topic: buy the truth and sell it not (Proverbs 23:23)
- Bible study, not an evangelistic service: the preacher teaches, and his basic scripture is Proverbs 23:23 — buy the truth and sell it not, also wisdom and instruction and understanding. Proverbs is a compilation of wise sayings, most of them Solomon's, and the wise collect wise sayings instead of filling the memory with foolish things.
- A newspaper article on the Tennessee Vols gives him his picture: Coach Barnes said his players had bought into the team, totally convinced the system, their coach and their teammates were winners and ready to give everything to win. Many come to an Apostolic church the same way they come to a game — they like the good feeling, the music and some of the preaching — then they look at the price tag and go the other way; they are spectators, never participants.
- Truth cannot be rented, borrowed or stolen — it can only be bought, and bought at a price.
Scriptures: Proverbs 23:23
Running the race: Paul and the cloud of witnesses
- Paul used the Grecian games: Philippians 3:14, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus — the runner keeps his eye on the white line from starting place to goal, and the swiftest who cuts corners is not crowned.
- First Corinthians chapter 9: every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things — athletes discipline even what they eat for a corruptible crown, and we run for an incorruptible one. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air — not shadow-boxing, not fighting one another or straw men, but the real enemy, the devil.
- But I keep under my body and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. My greatest enemy is the fellow I look in the face of every morning when I get up to shave.
- Hebrews 11 is the great encyclopedia of the faithful — some were delivered from persecutions, others died miserable deaths, of whom the world was not worthy — and Hebrews 12:1 follows: seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and run with patience the race that is set before us. We must not be weighted down with sports, business, the internet or the love of money; he must be first.
Scriptures: Philippians 3:14; 1 Corinthians 9:25-27; Hebrews 12:1; Hebrews 11 (chapter, as spoken)
The treasure and the cost
- Matthew 13:44: the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field, which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. You cannot have the treasure unless you buy the field. Sister Brenda Wilson answered it best when she was told she had given up so much: it is not what I have given up, it is all I have gained. Rejoice, and again I say rejoice.
- The merchant man and the pearl of great price: he sold all that he had and bought it. Everything I am, everything I hope to be, everything I have got belongs to him now — I sold out to buy it.
- The rich young ruler of Matthew 19 kept the commandments from his youth up, but when Jesus said sell what thou hast and give to the poor and follow me, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. In passing the teacher lays down the proof of who Jesus is: why callest thou me good — there is none good but God, and Jesus is God.
- The net cast into the sea gathered of every kind; when it was full they drew to shore and gathered the good into vessels but cast the bad away. Am I the fisherman or the fish? The fisherman knows the blowfish, the grunts and the carp — good for nothing, fit only to throw away — and John's word stands: the one coming after me has a fan in his hand and will thoroughly purge his floor. There is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun.
Scriptures: Matthew 13:44; Philippians (book-only, as spoken); Matthew 13:45-46; Matthew 19:16-22; Matthew 13:47-50
Paul sold out
- Twice Paul was nearly ruined for money — the masters of the damsel whose fortune-telling Paul rebuked, and the merchants of Diana at Ephesus, because the gospel was taking their revenue. What bothers a lot of folks is when it gets in their pocketbook; the love of money is the root of all evil.
- Acts 20: now behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there, save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me — but none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy.
- His farewell: I am pure from the blood of all men, for I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed to the flock over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers — grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock, and of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things.
- Agabus bound his own hands and feet with Paul's girdle (21:10-13) and they besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. Paul answered, I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. The lesson closes on the same note it opened: he preaches against sin the way the surgeon operated on him when Mark was six weeks old — not to hurt anyone, but to save a life. Buy the truth and sell it not.

praise the lord everyone excuse the delay but all this lost my microphone and having to buckle it back on my belt but we greet you tonight in the wonderful name of the lord jesus christ what a joy it is to be in the house of the lord tonight it's good to see each one of you here and i trust that you are ready to study the word of the lord with us tonight this is bible study and this is bible class and it's a little bit different from an evangelistic service i have got to give honor to our speakers oh my what preaching we've heard here lately the greatest sermon i've heard is the last one i think that pastor mark mccool pastor anthony and pastor whitley that that's the best they can do and every time i hear them it just brings me up off of my seat and uh who are you and uh oh my goodness i preached about that for many many years but seems like he always comes up with something that i've never thought of but i guess that's the young minds and the anointing of the lord and how we enjoy it if you did not hear the message of pastor anthony and pastor mark mccool go back into the archives and and listen to it i promise you you will be blessed and you'll hear it echoing in your ears who are you and i wonder who am i and it was great again we're blessed with great preaching and great music great choir great praise singers and i have to say this so many times but i really feel this way that we are indeed blessed we welcome home the whitley evangelistic party they've been offer evangelizing missionary preaching marriage retreats and evangelistic and also they got to go into washington and see a lot of the sites there and we welcome home evangelists eastern whitley with her accompaniments mom and dad and oh say i want to welcome brother and sister brian tonight that's moved to knoxville and we are delighted let's give them a great big hand i know they've been welcomed before but uh we we we just i'm still welcoming uh sister whitley and she's been down here for a long time and but anyway what a privilege it was to have her move to knoxville uh and what a great great blessing she's been to us we're going to look into the word of the lord tonight and um my my basic scripture is going to be proverbs 23 23 and you'll find my topic very very very simple and straightforward the book of proverbs is a compilation of many many wise sayings without having any subject matter other than making a straightforward statement and then going to the next wise statement many of those things were uh composed by and uttered by solomon and perhaps could be all of them but i've read that possibly it was a compilation that not only did he author many of these wise things but he was the collector of wise things and that's the way we got the proverbs and you and i would be wise to uh to collect wise sayings there are a lot of foolish things that it does not deserve the the space in your mind and memory to even remember them but seem like some of the foolish things we remember better than the wise things and wednesday night bible study is when we just settle down and the preacher teaches rather than evangelistic type and we call it bible study and that's what we're doing studying the bible and in verse 23 you will find my topic for tonight it simply says buy the truth and sell it not also wisdom and instruction and understanding a simple straightforward statement by the truth cool but knoxville news sentinel friday february the 11th 2022 an article by mike wilson it reads like this leadership was an unsettled part of the roster after the vols were humiliated in a 107 79 loss at kentucky on january 15. tennessee turned into a scrappy bunch in the following three games drawing technical fouls and having off-court skirmishes with lsu and florida and back-to-back games that attitude has seemingly forged the balls together against whatever comes they won six straight in sec play after last night would be seven and one back to back road games there's no doubt right now we have a group of guys that have bought into this team and each other coach barnes said i think they are playing hard for each other they are coaching each other notice the term coach barnes use the term bought into this means they are totally convinced that this system their coach and their teammates are winners and they're going to give everything they've got to win there's another term being used in the sports arena and that's they're sold out for this particular system coaches like to say of their teams we are a family legendary ladies basketball coach the late pat summitt had a term she used to describe the togetherness of her team quote we're not a team we're a cult well the apostle paul in his teaching referred to sporting events to illustrate a spiritual point and we'll we'll go into this shortly but uh where we're going with this there's a lot of spectators but there's not that many participants in the events there's a lot of folks that comes pretty close and they look on but then they go another way all of us do shopping i've gone and looked at a lot of automobiles and and my goodness i like that and i liked all these extras and all this and all that and man that's just what i want until i look at the price tag on the window and then i say i like it but i can't afford it do you have anything that's less expensive and then i keep on looking and the next thing you know do you have anything used that's got low mileage on it and then we go on and this is where we're going there's a lot of folks that come to an apostolic church and they like the good feeling they like the excitement they like the music they they like the singing and uh they they like some of the preaching but then they begin to look at the price tag and and then they consider that and they go the other way some continue on for a while and uh they're good spectators but never really get in now solomon said buy it by the truth don't just look at it don't just look at the price tag don't just look at the the the beauty and the sound and the joy but just look at it and say that's what i want and i'm going to buy into that i'm going to buy it and i'm not going to sell it paul used sports sayings and sports examples in philippians 3 14 he said i press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of god in christ jesus i pressed toward the mark this was in reference to the grecian games that was played once a year and it was like our present day olympics and this is a reference to the white line that marked the ground of the stadium from the starting place to the goal on which the runners were obliged to keep their eye fixed for they who transgressed or went beyond this line did not run lawfully and were not crowned even though they got first to the goal paul said i press toward the mark i keep my eye on the mark i got my eye on the prize now you may be the swiftest but you can't take you can't cut corners and you can't veer from the laid out line that's been laid out for you there's a lot of folks some old country singer i don't know who it was many years ago said everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die well everybody wants to go to heaven but everybody don't want to keep their eye on that line that starts at the big starting line and ends at the finish line but paul said i press toward the mark i bought into it i'm going to stick with the i'm going to stick with the with the line in every sport there are certain rules and regulations and there's always controversy and we argue with the referees and the officials they call that wrong and well they may miss the call but they miss it in your favor as as often as they miss it against your favor most of the time it is right they used to say the umpire said uh i call it like i see it another said i call it like it is and another one said it ain't anything until i call it so that's three good examples i call it like i see it i call it like it is but then the other says it's nothing till i call it now when the man of god calls it and he calls it according to the word of god there is no argument to that there is no debate that finishes it they used to say god said it i believe it and it's so then somebody else had another bumper sticker said god said it and that finishes it that's that it's not whether i believe it or not but it's the way it is because god said it first corinthians 9 25 and every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things now paul is using the again the sports example of a of an individual that is striving to win the prize and the one that's striving to win the prize the bible said he is temperate in all things now we cease moderation we teach uh uh being temperate in everything and this is what paul is talking about the man that strives for the mastery is tempered in all things i remember many years ago when um pastor mark was bringing some of the football players to church and and they they got to come into our house and willie galt and the what was the minister of defense name reggie white and but willie galt he was the fastest fella out there and but there's certain foods he you couldn't hire him to eat he would not eat certain foods and you better have plenty of milk on hand when they come to your house to eat they they would they would drink lots of milk and but they were disciplined because of what they ate and their exercise they had to build up their body and they made great sacrifices in developing a body that would be capable of winning the prize and yet they do it about paul said they do it to obtain a corruptable crown but we an incorruptible crown now he was talking about the the little uh crown they put on their head that's woven out of the out of leaves and they they put it on their head but now we are working for an eternal crown not something that just fades away and and what i'm talking about tonight is by the truth you can't rent it you can't borrow it you can't steal it but you can buy it we're going to keep that in mind by the truth oh how beautiful look at that buy the truth and sell it not then paul said they do it to obtain a corruptable crime but we are incorruptable i therefore so run not as uncertainly so fat i not as one that beateth the air i don't run uncertainly i don't zigzag i don't stagger around i keep my eye i'm the same i'm i'm watching that white line i'm staying with it some folks are one thing today and there's something else tomorrow once you find the truth you need to stay with it you need to buy into it and say i believe it i believe it i have bought i therefore so wrong not as uncertainly i what do you believe i believe this great apostolic message do you believe with all your heart yes i do i therefore so run not as uncertain that he said so fight i noticed one that beateth the air now again we're talking about sporting events that was called the boxer that gets in there to fight and with the proper strategy uh he can get the other fella to defending the air it's it calls shadow boxing and he said i'm not shadow boxing i'm making every blow count and i i i'm fighting and i'm not just beating the air there's a lot of sermons out here there's just so much fight in the air beating the air they can tell pretty stories and they can tell a lot but they never get around to telling the gospel truth they never really tell you what it takes to be saved now i love good stories i love to read good stories you can't find anything better than the the word of god but paul said so fight i not as one that beateth the air some folks waste their time fighting the wrong things they fight one another they fight imaginary evils they build straw men to knock them down well don't waste your time with that don't waste your time fighting the air just keep on fighting the real and your real enemy is the devil and and quit criticizing uh one another quit and and stick with what the the subject is all about hebrews 12 and 1 says wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses hold on now this is right after the great uh encyclopedia of faithful workers the 11th chapter of hebrews told of everybody from noah right down to the the present day he was talking about and that's the cloud of witnesses that's looking at us as you step look over your shoulder tonight and you read the 11th chapter of hebrews and you read all those great heroes of faith what they went through many of them were delivered from all kind of persecutions and and but the bible also said but there were others there were others that were sown asunder others were were consumed with by beasts they they they died miserable death god allowed it to be so and there were others but with the next lines of whom the world was not worthy of whom the world was not worthy but let me they were sold out they was they had bought into it they had bought the truth and nothing was going to deter them nothing was going to turn them aside we can be so shallow in our experience that the least thing can offend us and we'll go the other way over the smallest thing over the smallest thing we're not very sold out we haven't bought into it enough if we allow let me tell you something let me let me quote a wise thing and i don't remember where i got this but small things little things do big things to little people bad things let me see it again little things do big things to little people bad things little things can offend you can cause you to quit go the other way but that's because you haven't bought into you haven't bought the truth you've looked at it you've examined it it looks pretty good and i'm going to consider it but i haven't bought it yet by the truth and sell it not now wherefore see we also are accomplished about what's so great a cloud of witnesses when i look at what the old saints of god went through even in our day now pastor anthony seems like every time he preaches he gives reference to some of the old-timers who paved the way for us now i may be considered an old-timer now having preached 73 years and and i appreciate the path i've had i've had the privilege of traveling but there were those who traveled before me that showed me the way and when i saw it i bought into it and i've never sold out i'm still sold on it i bought into it now wealth will sing we also accomplish the bible some greater cloud of witnesses let us lay aside every weight and the sin which stuff so easily beset us and let us run with patience the race that is set before us in the ancient time in their in their olympics in the grecian games their runners laid aside everything even their garments they ran in the nude and of course we're not advocating that in any way but paul used this as an example they laid aside the garment they laid us out anything that might slow them down and let me tell you this we as apostolics and the day we are living in we don't need to be weighted down with sports we don't need to be weighted down with business we don't need to be weighted down with the internet we don't need to be weighted down with the love of money we don't he must be first and foremost and number one i have bought into this thing he is number one he is my all in all i bought it i bought it i bought it he said buy the truth and sell it not are you still with me by the truth and sell it not they laid aside every way every flimsy thing that might get in their way because they were getting a little crown made out of uh twigs off of a tree and just think paul is comparing this to that crown that's awaiting each one of us they're hallelujah there there's a crown this way he said not to me only but to all those who love his appearing if you've bought into it let's go on back to our our scripture but i keep pausing but i keep under my body and bring it into subjection lest that by any means when i preach i have preached to others how myself should be a castaway you know my greatest enemy is a fellow that i look in the face of every morning when i get up to shave that's my biggest enemy right there i keep under my body it's me it's my body it's it's my desires it's my pleasures it's my pastimes it's my choices it's the thing that gratifies the flesh and this is the thing that you and i have to constantly be on the lookout for and on guard because which do i value the most the satisfaction of this physical body and the pleasant the present pleasures of this time or am i looking ahead to the finishing of the race am i running with patience the race that sets before me but i keep under my body and bring it into subjection lest that bite means when i preach to others i myself should be a castaway now having justified by scripture my use of sports terms let's return to our topic by the truth and sell it not matthew 13 44 we read again the kingdom of heaven is likened to treasure hid in a field the which one a man hath found he hideth and for joy thereof goeth and so of all that he hath and by the field he found treasure hid in a field and for joy we we often lament of all we had to to give up i remember many years ago sister brenda wilson uh by the way keep her in prayer she had a paul the other day and had to be in the hospital in the intensive care for a period of time keep her in prayer but somebody was talking to her and they was she was witness to them about this apostolic faith and they said oh but you have to give up so much she said it's not what i have to give up it's all that i've gained when i found this great truth oh hallelujah buy the truth and sell it now it's not what i had to give up it's what i gained by giving up the flesh the world and the devil i have now gained eternal life and i've gained the joy of the lord and as the philippians said rejoice and again i say rejoice by the truth and sell it not the kingdom of heaven like a man that found treasure hidden in the field and he hid it and for joy thereof he didn't go around moping and said boy i wish i could i wish i could get this at a better price he set up all that he had gave it all gave up everything to get enough to buy the field now you can't have the treasure unless you buy the field because the treasure is in the field now what i'm saying to us tonight hoping that i can jog our minds and memories to understand yes there are some things we must give up oh dear brother charles richmond he was a superintendent levi strauss before they moved to mexico wherever they went but he was a supervisor and one of his workers him uh what you're going to do over the weekend charlie brother richmond said i'm going to church oh he said you're going to waste a a good weekend he said i am going to party and i'm going to have a good time and you're going to go to church monday morning when brother richmond went in this fella came in he had a black eye he had pop knots on his head he had been in a in a party and got into a fight and brother richmond said man said you really had a good time didn't you yeah i gave up a lot when i gave up the world i gave up the punk nuts and the black eyes and and i gave up drinking the liquor that put puts me uh throwing up over a commodity and and having wrecks and hurting myself let me tell you something i sold out i bought the truth and it ate for sale give the lord a handclap [Applause] by the truth and don't sell it sell it now again the kingdom of heaven is like until merchant man seeking good new pearls who when he had found one pearl of great price what did he do he went and sold all that he had and bought it let me tell you something i've got to sell everything this is mine because from here on out everything i am everything i hope to be everything i've got everything belongs to him i'm sold out i'm so i bought it but i had to sell out everything to buy it matthew 19 16 and behold one came and said unto him good master what good thing shall i do that i may have eternal life and he said to him here's a good question why call us thou may good there is none good but one and that is god now this is a little off of the subject but there's a great point here and what sense can you say that jesus isn't good he asked that young man said why call us thou me good there's none good but god if jesus isn't god he isn't good there's not but one that's good and that's god and jesus is god give him a handcuff would you uh just throw that little nugget in but if thou will enter into life keep the commandments he saith in which jesus said thou shalt do no murder thou shalt not commit adultery thou shalt not steal thou shalt not bear false witness honor thy father and thy mother thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself the young man said unto him all these things have i kept for my youth up what lack i yet jesus said unto him if thou wilt be perfect go and sell that thou hash and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasures in heaven come and follow me but the young man heard that saying went away sorrowful for he had great possessions his possessions kept him from following jesus i noticed in the book of acts the beloved physician dr luke he did such a magnificent job in keeping a journal and writing the story of the ministry of the apostle paul and he he tells us all about you read the book of acts and he did a magnificent job of telling the story but i noticed two things one of the the the biggest thing that got him in trouble when there was a damsel that had the spirit of damination and her masters under the spirit of the devil she went around soothing and telling people's fortunes and they made lots of money off of her and she followed after them said these men are servants of the most high god and what she was saying was saying the truth but it was a it was a noise and a nuisance and it was the enemy of destruction and the man of god turned her and rebuked that spirit and it came out of her and her masters saw they were losing much gain the things that meant lost to them their money and that's when they gathered up a mob around them and began to falsely accuse them and winds up getting them in jail because they were losing revenue the next instance it was the uh apostle paul when he went into to ephesus and he saw the inscriptions to the unknown god paul said to the unknown god whom you ignorantly worship him declare i unto you well now those who made little idol gods to diana the goddess diana that said that fell from heaven and they had they were they were merchants that made inscriptions to diana this goddess and they were making much money and when they began to hear the gospel of jesus christ they no longer was buying into the idle gods they were worshiping the true god and that's when all the merchants got together and stirred up a mob against the apostle paul and when they had their their meeting they said you see this is our trade and and said now then we're losing money because of what this fellow is preaching and said we need to do something about it and said the next thing you know he's going to attack the the great temple of diana and we're going to be we're going to be in trouble well let me tell you what bothers a lot of folks is when it gets in their pocket because because the bible said the love of money not money but the love of money is the root of all evil what do you love do you love the lord above everything or do you love things the young man went away sorrowful for he had great possessions and then it goes on to say again the kingdom of heaven is likened to a net that was cast into the sea and gathered of every kind which when it was full they drew to shore and set down and gathered the good into vessels but cast the bad away i've got a little topic i put in there i put in there with a question mark am i the fisherman or am i the fish first of all the fisherman had to know the good from the bad and when he drew the net in he sat down and he began to look that fish is no good that's no good and that's and he threw the bed away when we i used to live in florida many years ago in pensacola and we we go out fishing and there are several kinds of there's one kind of fish they call blowfish and when you when you brought it out the the water it would blow up two or three times its size i guess that's a natural something for for defense but it would blow up with it but it wasn't fit to eat it was nothing but blow there was nothing but air am i the fisherman or am i the fish do i know what to throw away there's a lot of fish you catch that they they're very easy to blow up there's not much to them there's and there was another fish that we caught i remember cats and they called them grunts i don't know what the real but you you you pull that and the thing starts grunting you can hear it like a little pig they call it a grunts but they were no good to eat no no i've caught a few grunts and i've caught a few grunts in my time am i the fisherman or am i fish am i the grunt or am i the preacher that knows the difference and the grunt and the real fish now in southeast missouri there was a fish we call carp the carp you know probably what a carp is they they are we call them mud suckers they feed off of the bottom the the mud and they they're scavengers they they eat uh trash and and dead stuff off of the the bottom i guess nature's way of cleaning the bottom but they were terrible tasting they they look they grew big but they were they were no good to eat in fact there was a a little bit of a comical remedy for cooking carp in southeast missouri they you take the fish and the carp and you lay them on a on a oak board and you scrape him on that oak board clean him real good and then you throw away the fish and eat the board i think that was a little bit of an exaggeration but the point was they were no good to eat am i the fisherman or am other fish and my other fish is that that's no good i just just feed off the mud off of the bottom now the the the analogy here is the fisherman gets a whole net full of fish and then he separates the fish and throws them away and you know we preachers the john the baptist said the one's coming after me he's got a fan in his hand and he's going to thoroughly purge his floor and he's going to gather wheat in the gardens and burn the chap with unquenchable fire and you know if we aren't careful we will this is such a big building i i i've got to walk from one side to the other get i'm not forgetting you folks over here either are you the fisherman or are you the fish so let me preach to you a little bit yeah i'm talking to y'all too now uh we preachers are kind of like vacuum cleaners we we want to suck everything in whatever it takes to get a crowd we'll get a crowd but let me tell you john said the one that's coming after me is gonna have a fan in his hand he's gonna thin us out and he's gonna now i'm not advocating running anybody off we love everybody you've heard me preach about compassion compassion compassion love and mercy mercy and truth are met righteously and i'm not backing up on that at all but let me tell you something there are some preachers they won't preach against any kind of sin if they think it's going to offend somebody and they're going to lose a tough pair am i the fisherman or am i the fish now we want to see every few fill i want to see this building running over but not at the expense of compromising on sin and overlooking sin now we do not preach against the sinner we preach against the sin so my little topic am i the fisherman or am i the fish when it was full they drew the shore set down and gathered the good in the vessels but cast the bat away so shall it be at the end of the world the angels shall come forth and sever the wicked from among the just and shall cast them into the furnace of fire there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth as unpleasant as it is as horrible to think of it but there is as the old saying goes there is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun there is indeed a hell that people are going to go to rich man died and lifted up his eyes in hell being in torment the poor man died and was carried by angels to abraham's bosom there is a a terrible place that folks are going to go to that don't accept the lord jesus christ as their savior and i must not overlook preaching to them what it takes to get to heaven and i i don't do it with the anger i don't do it with a bad spirit i do it because i love you i want to see you saved now the scripture below i'm about to read paul is explaining the extent to which he is sold out and the price he is willing to pay for this precious truth acts 20 22 now that he's gone through all these false accusations they accused him of bringing gentiles into the house of god in jerusalem and polluting the house of god they accused him of denying the law of moses and the the the way that moses taught and they they made up a lot of things against him now number one when paul preached and one in one instance the bible said the next lord's day the next it was though the whole city came out now the religious leaders they were so filled with jealousy and anger when they saw the crowds going to hear him they had to do something to make up stories against him to get him killed there was a group of 40 at one time made a vow that they would neither eat nor drink until they killed the apostle paul and again and again they falsely accused him but now then they finally get him arrested and he's being tried now notice after he's uh well this is before he gets in in prison if he goes back to jerusalem he's going to get arrested and here's what the beloved physician says about it paul said now behold i go bound in the spirit unto jerusalem not knowing the things that shall befall me there save that the holy ghost witnesses and every city is saying that bonds and afflictions abide thee abide me paul are you sold out have you bought into it do you really mean it the spirit has said if you go back to jerusalem you're going to be afflicted bonds and afflictions abide in me what do you say about that paul are you still sold out he said but none of these things move me neither count i my life dear unto myself so that i might finish my course with joy and the ministry which i have received with the lord jesus to testify the gospel of the grace of god paul are you sold out no i bought the truth and i'm not going to sell it bonds and afflictions await me but that's not going to keep me from going to jerusalem because i'm sold out [Music] and now behold i know that you that ye all among whom i have gone preaching the kingdom of god shall see my face no more wherefore i take you to record this day that i am pure from the blood of all men for i have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of god take heed therefore unto yourselves and to all the flock over which the holy ghost hath made you overseers to feed the church of god which he hath purchased with his own blood for i know this that after my departure shall grievous wolves entering among you not sparing the flock also of your own selves shall men arise speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them so you see paul didn't always just simply preach love and he pointed out that there were going to be false teachers that would arise but he said i'm going to jerusalem and awaiting me there is bonds and afflictions acts 21 10 as we teared there many days there came down from judea a certain prophet named agabus and then when he was come to us he took paul's girdle and bound his own hands and feet thus set the holy ghost he said so shall the jews that jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle and shall deliver him into the hands of the gentiles now wait a minute i'm going to see paul sold out prophet against he came in and he took paul's girdle off of him took his own hands and tied his own hands and his own feet with paul's girdle and he said the man that owns this girdle this is what awaits him in jerusalem he's going to be bound if he goes to they were begging him not to go to jerusalem and when we heard these things both we and they of that place besought him not to go up to jerusalem paul you know what awaits you there this is the prophet against the holy ghost told him this was going to happen are you still going yeah because i'm sold out i bought it i bought it i bought the field i bought it and now notice what paul said then paul answered what mean you to weep and break my heart for i am ready not to be bound only but also to die at jerusalem for the name of the lord jesus oh dear god am i going to let some minor things some affliction some problem some dissatisfaction some minor thing am i going to let it deter me oh by the truth and i bought it and what did i i gave everything i am sold out i am sold out i bought it hallelujah and after these days we took our carriage and went up to jerusalem we just stand your feet with me please we're going to stop right there and we'll continue this next time by the truth and sell it not i am i really sold out have i really bought into it am i looking at the price tag is the price too high or or am i or am i totally committed am i totally committed on your friends with all the love with all the love there is in my heart tonight i welcome everyone we welcome there is not a drug addict there is not a a prostitute there is not a whoremonger uh in the city of knoxville that's not welcome right here we love you but i want to tell you something i love you enough to tell you the truth i love you enough to tell you what it takes to be saved he that loves the world of the things of the world the love of the father is not in him and mark was six weeks old i took appendicitis and uh back then it was a much bigger deal than it is now and the they put me in the hospital saint mary's and and sister mccool couldn't go with me she had the whole mark he was six weeks old and in fact she she allowed the janitor to hold him while she came to see about me and they took me back in the operating room and a great big fella a nurse or orderly or something he got one hand arm under my bend on my legs and the other behind my neck and bent me into a circle and and they took a a needle to me it looked like it was that long and they went in my back and they they paralyzed me for a period of time i was dead and before he got that needle out of my back i was unconscious i was out of here and when i woke up how do you feel when are you going to operate they said we've already operated we've taken out the uh you were you have severely infected your appendix and had you not had this done you would have died from the infection of a ruptured appendix and they didn't bend me into a semi-circle because they wanted to hurt me they wasn't doing that because they wanted to scare me they did it to save my life when we preach against sin we're not preaching because we dislike folks but you see i want to see the infection of sin taken from you i want you to i want you to commit and and by the truth and say yes you see the the anonymous to paul what tires thou arise and be baptized wash away your sins and immediately he he arose and was baptized over they were in jail and the god sent an earthquake and and delivered them from jail and the jailer knew that the death penalty awaited him because if anybody any prisoner got loose he was responsible but paul said do you say he took a sword was about to commit suicide and paul said do yourself no harm your prisoners are all with you and that very night that jailer repented and was baptized and all his house i don't hate anybody i just want to see everybody saved and i've got to tell you buy the truth and sell it not
