Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Offering our best: the lesson's big idea
- Lesson 1.3 of the new Sunday-school book, taught on Wednesday night, is 'Offering Our Best': 'I will offer God my best' — it is not sacrifice if you give away something you did not need and do not want anyway.
- The focus verse is Genesis 4:4: 'And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering.'
- The walk of Genesis 4: Cain, a tiller of the ground, brought of the fruit of the ground; God had no respect to Cain's offering — and the teacher presses that it was not only an inferior offering but a terrible attitude behind it.
- God's word to Cain stands over the lesson: 'If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door' (4:7); after the murder, 'Am I my brother's keeper?' (4:9) and the curse that follows — his punishment greater than he can bear, the sevenfold vengeance on any who slay him, and the fugitive and vagabond life.
Scriptures: Genesis 4:4; Genesis 4:1-5, 7, 9-15
Would the governor be pleased?
- At the teacher's direction the pastor reads Malachi 1:8 aloud: 'And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the Lord of hosts.'
- He presses the verse on the house's own service: who would shut the doors for naught or kindle fire on God's altar for naught — the majority of the work of this church is done by folks who donate themselves, and God has no pleasure in an inferior gift.
- The application turns personal: to be absent when you are needed — choir practice, an instrument, a leading role — is to offer God a blind sheep; the singers who are here early on Sunday morning with their families are giving him their best.
Scriptures: Malachi 1:8; Malachi 1:10
First settle it with your brother
- God knew Cain's problem was not only the offering but the heart: strife, envy and hatred toward his brother — 'Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift' (Matthew 5:23-24).
- Our offering now is the calves of our lips — our praise — and it is not accepted from a heart at odds with a brother; communion and feet-washing are meant as a manifestation of humility and willingness to serve your brother.
Scriptures: Matthew 5:23-24
The war in the flesh, and the choice of life
- Romans 7 is the human nature we are dealing with: 'For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin... For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do' — he reads the passage in the King James and then in a contemporary rendering to put it in everyday language.
- Isaiah 5:20 names the day we live in: 'Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!'
- The close is Deuteronomy 30 read aloud standing: 'See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil... I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.'
Scriptures: Romans 7:14-20; Isaiah 5:20; Deuteronomy 30:15-19

praise the lord everyone we greet you tonight in the wonderful matchless magnificent magnanimous name of jesus the name that is above every name aren't you glad you know that name tonight that name that is above every name we're so glad to see each one of you here tonight there are so many wonderful things going on at first apostolic church you needed a notebook to write everything down to remember all the announcements of the exciting things that are happening but uh and these are not things for you to just uh pick which one you wanna uh you won't be engaged in everything you won't be out here on the water slides probably well like they'd had out here the other day for the children but there'll be other things and let's stay involved it's very important that we stay involved i have a little unfinished business to take care of tonight um the message sunday morning uh things learned at grandparents knees and um i consider myself perhaps the grandparent or the grandpa of this church because most of you uh i'm old enough to be your grandpa and the lord if we i've been serving been preaching 73 years so anyway i i would consider myself the grandparent of this church uh i preached sunday morning things learned that grandparents knees now i want to remind you i read a disclaimer before i started to preach over in the beginning of my message i said be careful what you unwittingly teach your grandchildren be careful what you unwittingly teacher and then i gave an example well i've had three phone calls this week and one dear sister told me i'm not going to call any names so you folks don't don't get nervous but wonder sister called me and said i enjoyed the message but said i've got one complaint and i said what is that she said today at me and some of the ladies went out to eat and said right in the middle of their eating and the fellowship so i cut loose singing all my exes live in texas another brother called me and said brother cool i'm in trouble i thought oh my lord what's wrong what's wrong he said that sermon you preached said you've left a song in my mind i can't get out of my mind i said what song is that he said all my exes live in texas well let me give you a remedy for that you might try another song another old hymn to replace it such as poor little robin walking to missouri but anyway we had a had a great time sunday morning and i enjoyed preaching to our church i've had the prisoners of preaching to this church through the years since 1957 and i i we have a a bible loving preaching loving church and we hear some of the greatest preaching from our pastoral staff from our ministerial staff uh just and then the those who come in and i thought the last preacher we had here brother steve smith preached to the greatest message i have ever heard on joseph it was absolutely and the the bad thing about it was i already had my notes started preaching about joseph for my uh grandparents day but anyway we're going to get into our study we got new sunday school books and we're having our sunday school lesson on on wednesday night and if you don't uh haven't picked up your book these are are free as long as they last but my they it's a new updated fantastic uh book and i noticed i'm having to learn how to use it the first lesson is the purpose in creation and it's the number is 1.1 i had to figure out what that meant but anyway it was a lesson on the creation god's purpose in creation creation was not a random act of god god desires to have relationship with humanity god created the world with humanity in mind and then lesson 1.2 was god's redemptive plan humanity is born into a world without sin the garden was a place of perfection god wants us to live in perfect union with him adam and eve disobeyed god the serpent was subtle adam and eve ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil sin brings guilt and shame god searched for adam and eve i can find hope in god's redemption and mod in god's redemptive plan and receive forgiveness for my sins now that was 1.2 tonight is lesson 1.3 that means that this is the first uh series of lessons and uh what's we're now in book one and it'll go thusly they're keeping in time with the the new uh uh online inline whatever they call it but anyway it's a new day that we are living in and so we're trying to hold on tonight's lesson lesson 1.3 is entitled offering our best in the uh in the book of malachi they don't have it and i didn't i just now came to my mind but in the uh pastor the the book of malachi uh maybe it's a chapter three or four uh he said that we robbed god and tithe and offerings and um and then they say wherein have we robbed you said we robbed and tithing offerings and then he i want you to get the scripture pastor and i'm sorry that i can't give any more than that but but it said them if you give this what you're given to god if you tried to give it to the to the governor if you tried to give it to the higher up would it be receiving and give you a little time to scan over it i should have uh but i just thought of it it didn't i did i didn't when i sent my notes to brother uh derek um even if i've been studying two weeks i'm studying right up until uh service time brother croucher used to uh i'd be sitting there flipping through my bible and he's saying that brother mccool if you ain't got it but now you ain't gonna get it so but anyway um you could be looking for that and uh when you finally let me know uh and there's a new title and little sub titles here one this is a new idea they have it's called lesson big idea instead of i think they called it a favor thought or something but this is a new title big idea and here's the big idea in the lesson i will offer god my best i will offer god my best i heard about preacher was asking the church to fast and pray and and he uh wanted if anybody would pass three days nobody raised a hand anybody passed two days nobody said anybody passed a day and they couldn't get anybody to raise their hand so finally he said how many in this church will fast one meal one meal a day this next week and one lady raised her hands i'll fast breakfast i don't ever eat breakfast anyway well that is hardly giving god your best now when we speak of sacrifice it isn't sacrifice if if you give something away that you didn't need and don't want anyway that's not a sacrifice you don't hear of evangelistic quarters much anymore but years ago when uh a sister well way back before sister mccool and i were married my mom and dad and and spencer and lady and gary traveled with us and well with with a crowd like us they didn't have much of a place to stay and they didn't have uh motels for they did they didn't have money to pay for it but they would fix you up um an evangelistic quarters usually in the church and folks would bring furniture and it would always be broken down and uh skillets just warped and it would be you could say they sure didn't bring their best they brought what they had and but you could tell most of the time it's things that they were getting rid of anyway and if we aren't if we aren't careful in our walk with god we will give god our leftovers if i'm going to travel if i'm going somewhere on vacation i'll travel on sunday does that ring a bell with you if i've got anything that's uh urgent i'll let it take place of me going to church and i think we as christians should establish a practice in our life that that that church is a priority it's not a pastime it's not a someplace you go if there's no place else to go it should be a priority i mean this man will set aside wednesday night i want to set aside sunday morning whatever service uh the church has because i want to i want to give god my best so that's the big idea and i think it is a big idea and it's a wonderful idea our children this is a little earthy a little carnal and we're gonna i gotta chuckle out of my phone calls really i forgive me i'm i'm a little on the mccool side of i like a i like a laugh and and and that tickled me when i got those calls i i laughed out loud because i i it was cute and i understood it um but uh i i i like to think in terms of our children are watching us and there's something in our training at our school and daycare and uh we've studied many different formats from different groups that uh that furnish literature and so forth but there was one uh one sentence and one of our lessons that has stayed with me so vividly it said we teach by what we say by what we do and by what we are but said mostly by what we are you teach by what you say by what you do and by what you are but mostly by what you are i read something this last week and i don't know who it was that said it but it's supposed to be somebody important but i didn't get the but it said you ought to be preaching every day and if necessary use words now what does that mean you need to preach every day and if necessary use words what it's saying is we're going to influence people by who we are and and and we need to be concerned about that now we don't need to put on an act if it isn't real but you folks are going to watch us how we live what we do and so forth and uh i've heard different people through the years tell that so and so said so and so or did so and so that really turned them off and or i'll not go back to church or thus and thus and i've also heard them say that that brother so-and-so did something that i'll always remember that was a a powerful witness to me and i'll always remember it and uh be be careful what you're saying and my little statement there and that is it's not a a serious thing that this was a in in jest but yet there was a deep meaning we sometimes teach unwittingly our children from our knee and we need to be be careful about that uh focus verses genesis 4 and 4 and abel he also brought of the first purslings of his flock and of the fat thereof and the lord had respect unto abel and to his offering and the pastor when you find that you yes when you're looking for something like that uh but anyway um uh genesis 4 and 1 is our beginning of the lesson text and adam knew eve his wife she conceived in barricade and said i've gotten a man from the lord now that one statement right there if you stop and think about it was that a true statement had they begun a man from the lord i believe so i don't think that was a false statement and and what i'm getting at now in in this study um the first child was cain and we know what happened to cain and we'll review some of that as we go along but he was from the lord but the thing about god's relationship with us god made man in his image and after his likeness and and he didn't give man all power as he himself has but the one thing he he gave us is the willpower to do what we want to do now god brother richmond had another saying that i remember too brother charles richmond he's in a nursing home now but he said this he was in the marines many years ago and he said in the marines they told him they said we're going to teach you how to do it and we're going to show you how to do it and said that we're going to see that you do it boy that was pretty powerful wasn't it gonna tell you how to do it i'm gonna show you how to do it and then we're gonna see that you do it well we do not take any kind of physical leverage on anybody for anything you've heard me say this over and over again the violent take it but which we don't mean that in actuality and physical violence but you are going to be pressured from the pulpit by the man of god as he continues to remind you continues to remind you peter said as long as i'm in this temple i'm going to stir you up i'm going to tell you this though you already know it that's why it's so important for us to attend all the services we need to be here wednesday night not just because the bishop is teaching and not just because i i like i like to see a a large crowd here because it lets me know you're interested but [Music] repetition repetition repetition that's the secret in teaching repetition repetition hear it over and over and over again the only time i was slapped bare-handed in school now i was paddling uh maybe a time or two but anyway uh i have a habit of reading out loud i still do to this day i get more out of what i am reading if i hear myself after all the bible says faith comes by hearing but the teacher told me he's a baptist preacher's wife and i i was in the fifth grade and she she corrected me a time or two about reading out loud well it was right after valentine's day and i had left my valentines at school and um uh i would come back to school and school was out the bell it was getting ready to ring we'd put our books away and we were sitting there waiting for the bell to ring and there was two girls sitting at the desk we had those deaths back then that uh two could sit in that and and then had their ink well there and these two girls were sitting behind me and they were gibber jabbering uh because school was out and they didn't think they were disturbing the class and um but they were jibber jabbing but the teacher had never corrected them for uh for reading out loud that she did me well i was looking at my valentines and and i wasn't paying attention and she walked around the side of the room and walked back and she walked up the aisle between the two row of desks and walked up behind me well of course the girls who were sitting behind me jabbering quietly but it was annoying to the teacher they stopped and they saw her coming well that teacher walked up behind me and all of a sudden for i did not bam she slapped me with her open hand and and i i didn't know what in the world of heaven i told you to quit reading out loud well for one time i wasn't reading out loud but every time i read out loud i remember that my point is remembering what you hear remembering what you hear and that's why you need to hear it over and over and over again he said i will put you in memory of these things though you already knew them so cain was born the first he was a man child from the lord but god gave him his his ability to obey or disobey you would wonder why anyone would but this is the human nature seemingly and after all the serpent had already beguiled eve and this nature was already in man and she and and and she again bear his brother abel and abel was a keeper of sheep but cain was a tiller of the ground and in the process of time it came to pass that cain brought of the fruit of the ground and offering unto the lord and abel he also brought to the first things of the flock and of the fat thereof and the lord had respect and to abel and to his offering you remember just a few weeks ago i preached the message are you am i my brother's keeper or am i my brother's killer but until cain and into his offering he had no respect and cain was very rough and his countenance fell god did not respect cain's offering now i've heard it preached and all we preachers have our own view of why god didn't respect his offering and it is generally believed that because abel brought of his flock an animal had to die uh and which was a sin offering for for he'd given to god but cain brought of the fruit of the ground well we don't know we don't know that cain didn't bring a could have brought a lamb because uh i'm sure he had sheep because he didn't he did more than just raise vegetables but at any rate i think there's something else we need to look at if thou doest well shalt thou not be accepted and if thou doest not well sin lieth at the door and unto thee shall be his desire and thou shalt rule over him now you heard me preach about uh seeing life was it was couching like an animal down sneaking and ready to pounce on you uh that's the way the devil is he's waiting and he's desiring to rule over you and you're going to have to rule over him or he is going to rule over you jesus told peter peter satan desires to have thee to set thee as wheat but he said i've prayed for you now he gave peter the power to rule over the devil instead of letting the devil rule over him you and i are in and and i i can't say an eternal battle but a lifetime battle with the devil he's not going to try you and then go on his ways well that i'm i've never i'm not not getting him he's back and back again uh like a like a mad dog every time he gets close he's going to try to bite you so you're going to have to be on your guard constantly to fight against him you got my scripture all right let me read this and and the lord said it cain where is abel thy brother and he said i know not and then his true nature his arrogance his um he said i know not well he was lying i am my brother's keeper that he he'd invited abel to walk out into the field with him and he got out there he killed his brother and then he lied about it and he asked the question am i my brother's keeper now he not only gave an inferior offering but he had a terrible attitude it was not only the attitude of giving god a less than all he had and the very best he had but he had a terrible attitude pastor would you read malachi 1 8 malachi 1 8 and if you offer the blind for sacrifice now if you offer the blind for sacrifice is it not evil is it not evil and if you offer the lame and sick is it not evil if the offer the lame and the sick is it what is it not evil all right offer it now unto thy governor give it to the governor offer it to the governor will he be pleased with thee will he be pleased with thee or accept thy person saith the lord of hosts or except will he accept you will he accept thy person if you bring him a a a lamb that's got a leg broke and he's hopping and you bring one that's blind and you got it and well uh he was no good anyway wasn't gonna reproduce and he said look how skinny he is and and here here it is god you can have him that would be an insult to god you want to give something that the governor will accept it's amazing when you get in the pulpit like this and start teaching there are things that come back to your mind that you hadn't thought of in in years but years ago policeman jc odom his wife was clerk and the criminal court and i i was summoned to serve on the criminal court jury and i had to check in every morning and and um she got to know me i didn't i didn't know that she was impressed by me in any way but her husband got the call to me she he said and he was a captain with the police force and uh he said my wife is very impressed with you and i'd like to meet you and i got acquainted with him and wound up by and by he uh he had come to my house of course he started coming to church and and his pictures in one of our church annuals and we became very good friends up until his death but one of the story i'm getting at when his wife retired well we'd been such good friends they had a retirement um gathering for her and they sent us an invitation in fact they had me appointed to a product project misdemeanor to go on tv and and promote this program of uh first-time offenders if it was a misdemeanor wasn't a real serious crime we were supposed to to help them and to see if they couldn't intercept a young person or whoever once they committed a misdemeanor to help them not go deeper and that's what i would speak on on television i went on tv and spoke about that but anyway this was such an important occasion and and they wanted us to come from sister mccool and i we went and we what do you get you know you you don't get someone we we found a vase or something but it was it's a great big and it was a box about that big and sister mccool she knows how to wrap things up pretty and so um the time came we went down the courthouse and here we was carrying that because we was going to see uh our dear friend and um we got on the elevator and there was the mayor the mayors and remember what where you go all this is uh we're going to such such a retirement party oh yes she's a wonderful person he said i've i've let that skip my mind so and when we got out of that elevator she got to look at her account and we're the ones that get we was a week early but boy we had the gift we we were prepared my whole point in this is uh even if the mayor i hated i had a little uh toaster i i hated to have a little coffee pot or something what we had it was pur it was very impressive whatever was in that beautifully decorated even though we was a weaker and we didn't tell him any different but when we looked the time we snuck out of there and away we went well let's go on pastor said if you bring would you bring the blind would you bring the no would the governor receive it what did it say about it he asked the question will he be pleased with thee will he be pleased with thee or accept thy person or accept thy person who is there even among you that would shut the doors for naught who is there among you that would shut the doors for an hour if i ask you to if i ask you to usher you've got to have a salary if i ask you to do anything listen and i'm not preaching against folks being paid on the south folks have to live if they if they teach if they work and they they're depending on this brother the bible says the labor is worth of its higher but the majority of the things that we have done around here has been done by folks that donate themselves donate their labor i don't know how many years we go back that uh brother jimmy debusk now this this is a big thing whether you know it or not somebody open the church doors every sunday morning at the right time and turn on the lights and have the church ready well now usually the preachers studying and praying and trying to get ready and but he's done that for years never got a dime for it every saturday and i make mention of this because i don't think things like this gets uh gets enough attention but um every sat i drive over here around and and there is brother stanley brother jimmy and uh brother uh uh roger and they'll be out man i'll be all three of them at the same time i think they rotate and they're out there picking up trash in this yard you don't know what they don't get up and announce it they've never been paid a dime for it but that is a valuable service yes and of course there was brother staff or brother jimmy one brother stan i guess it was i was thankful for what he said bishop said the reason we do that we don't want you to backslide i said what what well i had preached a message about i i i drove up and there was a big mac rapper and big lead in the in the parking lot and there was a coke can uh sitting in the window and i i i named over several things and i was on one of these little kicks of yep and about things like that and so uh i said don't if you don't leave your big mac wrappers in the church park or not don't leave your half uh filled coke cans in the window respect the house of god respect the parking lot you know take care of this place don't don't bring food in the church don't do this and don't do that and uh i went through my little tantrum you know and so brother stanley he decided he was gonna he said i'm gonna help you to be safe so they've been doing it ever since thank you so much all right my point is the scripture says if you give your inferior gift is that about all there is that he said neither do you kindle fire on my altar for naught you don't tend to fire my altar for not he said i have no pleasure in you just suppose we had to pay every one of these singers a salary that comes up here and sings just thank you brother jeremy charged us for what he does just think if if if we had to pay for all the things system we're doing this because we love god and we give him our best i want to tell you something else watch out here comes one of my tantrums now i can warn you ahead of time you're given less than your service you're a a blind sheep when you miss choir practice are you sitting back out there when they're expecting you to be up here when you're needed to play an instrument when you're new when you take a leading role and you're dependent upon and then you're not here when you are needed you are short [Applause] all right i warned you about my tantrum but here we go we are giving god less than our best and and i get a little ding on my phone uh so so much before church and it'll say uh music practice choir practice and i want you to know these folks are over here 8 30 on sunday morning when you and i hadn't got out of the shower yet they're over here practicing they've got little children they have to get ready they've got families they've got to get ready and i want you to know they're giving their best when they come over here and get ready to sing in the choir and get ready to play music and they need to be recognized and they need to see that they're giving something to god give the lord and give them a big hand [Applause] they're not all here tonight i know that but i want you to know uh when when i i look at when sister mccool and i having to alternate services and uh but when i'm not here i'm glued to my my laptop and i can hear everything and uh i was up there in the control room a while ago i took pictures of so pretty i don't see how they can operate with with no wires laying around boxes and junk and wore out microphones it was so clean it looked so nice i told pastor how in the world they able to produce a program because everything is in its place brother paul cook and ours at his place and he's recorded things that folks have wanted that that happened years ago and i i'm i'm stuttering i'm speechless other than spluttering to tell you how important you are what did the little sermonette do to you sunday night about brother blevins cutting the vine into it didn't it didn't die right then it didn't it didn't wilt right then it looked just as good as it did before the next day looked just as good the next day looked just as good but in about a week's time you go by the leaves are brown it's all wilted and weathered and the source of life has been cut off now when you sever your tithes not only with god but the bible says forsake not the assembling of yourselves together and the matter is something that somehow developing the bad manners there and then the manner they're not can they're not developing the right manner of behavior well let's go on i think we've about did have we got that covered pastor all right and now thou are cursed from the earth which hath opened their mouth to receive thy brother's blood when thou tilt the ground it shall not henceforth yield unto thee or strength uh a fugitive and a vagabond shall dive in god's gonna let the earth do to you what you're doing to god you you didn't give to god what you should give to god henceforth it's going to be that way with you the earth is not going to yield you're going to work at it and it's not going to give you back what you deserve and cain said unto the lord my punishment is greater than i can bear behold that's driven me out of the out this day from the face of the earth from thy face shall i be hid and i shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth and it shall come to pass that everyone that findeth me shall slay me and the lord said unto him therefore whosoever slave cain vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold and the lord set a mark upon cain lest any find him and should kill him now matthew 5 23 24 jesus said therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar and there remembers that thy brother hath ought against thee leave there thy gift before the altar and go thy way first be reconciled to thy brethren and then come and offer thy gift now the correlation and the connection that i'm making right here god knew that not only was cain giving an inferior offering he had a bad attitude now god knew what came with cain demonstrated what the problem was when he allowed strife and envy hatred and murder to enter his heart toward his brother now remember me when i preached this message and my brother's keeper a killer jesus said if you hate your brother you're a murderer a lot of us i've never i've never never murdered but sometimes we read the obituary column a certain amount of satisfaction when certain ones go glad it's gone no when you come to give god your praise now that's what we give to god now the bible speaks of the calves of your lips the bible refers to our our presence to god now we don't give him a bloody offering but the calves of our lips which is our praise oh i i'm thrilled to see these little children around here shouting and praising god and sir they don't know what the they know what they feel and they see you and and they're learning at their grandparents and parents knees and it's it's a good learning what they are learning it's a good lesson they are learning but jesus said if you come to and you to bring your gift and you happen to think that you your brother has all against you you again it works both ways leave your gift and go and settle it this is why i said concerning communion if you take the communion unworthily you're supposed to that's supposed to be a manifestation of the humility and your willingness to serve your brother when you get when you take the communion and you uh wash feet all right i'm headed to the close romans 7 14 this is the human nature that we're dealing with paul is writing in romans the seventh chapter he said for we know that the law is spiritual but i am carnal soul to understand that's who i am for that which i do i allow not for what i would that do i not but what i hate that do i if then i do that which i would not i consent unto the law that it is good now then it is no more i that do it but sin that dwelleth in me for i know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform there which is good i find not for the good that i would i do not but the evil which i would not that i do do you see your picture in here anywhere i'll say mine now if i do that i would not it's no more i that do it but sin that dwelleth in me now i look this up in the message bible that's another i don't often read from a different version of the bible the king james version is my preference that's what i've studied all my life and but uh the message bible is in contemporary language and i want you i'm going to read those same verses and in the message bible i can anticipate the response that is coming i know that all god's commandments are spiritual but i'm not is isn't this also your experience yes i'm full of myself after all i've spent a long time in since prison what i don't understand about myself is that i decide one way but then i act another doing things i absolutely despise so if i can't be trusted to figure out what's best for myself and then do it it becomes obvious that god's command is necessary but i need something more for if i know the law but still can't keep it and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions i obviously need help i realize that i don't have what it takes i can will it but i can't do it i decide to do good but i don't really do it i decide not to do bad but then i do it anyway my decisions such as they are don't result in action something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time it happens so regularly that it's predictable the moment i decide to do good sin is there to trip me up i truly delight in god's commands but it's pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight parts of me covertly rebelled and just when i least expected they take charge i've tried everything and nothing helps i'm at the end of my rope is there anyone who can do anything for me isn't that the real question the answer thank god is that jesus christ can and does he acted to set things right in his this life of contradictions where i want to serve god with all my heart and mind but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different i thought that was pretty interesting to to put it in everyday language i 5 20 says woe unto them that call evil good and good evil did you know we're living in that day right now that put darkness for light and light for darkness that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter now god tells us what he expects out of us but he leaves it up to us to do it he don't put bits in our mouth and make us go he tells us what to do plainly and then he just steps back and lets us do what we want to do now we can be filled with the holy spirit which is the holy the holy ghost is god in spirit and let it guide us but you're still fighting with that old man deuteronomy 30 see i have set before thee this day life and good and death and evil in that i command thee this day to love the lord thy god to walk in his ways and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments that thou mayest live and multiply and the lord thy god shall bless thee in the land where there thou goes to possess it would you stand your feet with me but if thy heart turn away so that thou will not hear thou shalt be drawn away and worship other gods and serve them i denounce unto you this day that ye shall surely perish and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land where the thou passeth over jordan to go to possess it i call heaven and earth the record this day against you that i've said before your life and death blessings and cursing therefore choose life that thou and thy seed may live he's told us what to do how to live it and we need by all means to obey it closing a a a little um um i i guess you call it a commercial it's something that they put on the screen just showed a young girl beautiful skin was radiant hair was sparkling eyes sparkling teeth pretty and it showed her in stages as she indulged in drug taking and the last stage she was a young girl that looked like an aged woman wrecked her health when we opened the daycare we had one student sister mccool and i would come over here at six o'clock in the morning and that little girl was a first grader and she didn't go to our school but she caught the bus here and sister mccool would fix the hot chocolate or whatever and i would play games where they had a little gang you a little thing would bounce around we kept her entertained till the bus came her parents had to work so that's why that was our first student and we did that until she got big enough to didn't need to our services later on as she began to grow up uh she began to get in the world getting a little while and the parents thought they better get her back in this school so they brought her back and put her in the school but they they put her in school too late she had already had a taste of the world now i'm talking about the first student we had in this daycare in school i had the unhappy duty of standing on the edge of that young girl's grave when she was 16 years old she died of an overdose which had everything to help her live right everything but somebody didn't direct her in the right way so our teaching tonight remember god tells us what to do now then it's up to us to do it father we thank you for this service tonight i pray god that you will let the word of god let the instructions touch our hearts and sink deep into our inner being and may we get a a new sense of urgency and importance of hearing the word and obeying the word getting ready to go to heaven dismiss us from this place but not from your presence in jesus name amen amen you're dismissed in the name of the lord follow whatever protocol that you're comfortable with
