praise the lord everybody praise the lord everyone we greet you tonight in that wonderful matchless name of the lord jesus christ that only name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved and i would like to add my voice to that of pastor mccool and welcoming sister gardner and sister connie we have some very dear connections right there of course uh she sister gardner is the grandmother of eleanor sister mccool and i are the great grandparents of eleanor and while i'm saying that i also want to say how plea i haven't got used to rejoicing over sister whitley being a member of our congregation and of course she's the grandmother of easton and sister mccool and i we are so delighted with our our two grandchildren of course that's anthony and uh ashley but then our two great-granddaughters come along and what a joy they have been to our lives as you if you listen to me very much preaching you know i'm a very strong believer in families god fashioned the church after a family or a family after the church and um he likens the church to the bride and he's the groom and uh it's such a a glorious thing when you re realize the relationship between christ and the church and also in our family ties how wonderful and how beautiful it is and of course i would add my word to pastors with welcoming brother josh wilson he is from brother bald's church in indiana and we've known him for many years and someone that has stayed involved in the work of the lord and the leadership and it's a it's a wonderful wonderful thing and it's what a great bible class we have here tonight my goodness in this beautiful to see such a wonderful bible class brother spencer and brother bob and i got on a three-way call uh the other day and we do that once in a while and and brother spencer made mention that his uh of course we're caregivers to brother mac cook and he's 96 years old nine yeah 96 and sister joyce uh livingston brother danny livingston's wife her mother is staying with them in nashville and she is 99 years old still goes up and down the steps by herself and she said the other day that she said when i die there won't be anybody in my funeral because i've outlived all my friends so we kind of got to laughing about it i said i've already got that figured out i in my age i'm in the same situation but i've already instructed systema cool that all those that attend my future they get a free live goldfish and if it's in the month of march they get a kite and uh for the reception after that they're gonna have the longest cake in the world and of course that's a play on some of the things we've done in our sunday school outreach and drives but what a joy pastor just mentioned while ago what a great life what what a great joy it is and it is so exciting to be involved in the work of the lord starting when i was seven years old repenting of my sins and getting the holy ghost when i was 11 and i started to preach when i was 11 and it's been that i feel like i'm the most blessed person on planet earth to be able to be involved in the work of god so much of my life and to be uh the the founding pastor of a church like this and to see it passed on off to i'm so delighted to see our pastoral staff if you hear me say that very often but we're blessed with a great great church family and each one of you i want you to know how much i love and appreciate each and every one of you to have a son and daughter-in-law like we've got i have older ministers call me and it's not it's not unusual brother mccool could you help i'm needing to retire i need someone to take over the church and and i i've seen him in great distress needing someone to take over the leadership and to see what god has just given us right here in our own church family it's a it's a great joy and i give him all the honor the glory for everything well are you ready to get into the word of god tonight i love the word of the lord don't you i love to study the word and it's a little bit it's a little bit different uh in teaching and preaching uh preaching seems to be based a whole lot on the emotional excitement and we and of course i do that sometimes in teaching also but it's not quite as fiery but to see a congregation like you that i can see that you're so very interested in the word of god it blesses me and i love to teach a bible class like we have here on wednesday night and tonight's lesson is lesson number five in our summer series and it is entitled standing in faith standing in faith the focus thought is we must stand in faith even if things do not seem to work out in our favor and they don't always seem to be turning out in our favor there are times it looks like you're defeated but in the in the in the end you know we've read the back of the book and we know who wins standing the headline comes from livescience.com in fact if you do a simple google search about how sitting kills the title was too much sitting is killing you that was the headlines you'll find many more articles from numerous sources warning people of the danger of inactivity inactive lifestyle some folks seems to think when you reach a certain age you're supposed to just sit down and and do nothing uh listen i've had so many brother how are you enjoying your retirement i said what retirement i haven't retired i've retired a few times and i don't intend to retire until the lord takes the last breath or takes my ability and he can do that anytime he wants to do that but i'm not going to get inactive in the work of the lord and in a situation sister mccool coolant i have now we alternate and uh sunday night i get to listen online and thank god for that the miracle of online service and i don't advocate that to folks who are able to come to the house of god for the bible said forsake not the assembling of yourselves together and it said as the matter of some is some folks they've developed bad manners if i can if i can fudge a little bit on the grammar uh as the ma there are some have a manner of staying home instead of going to the house of god and it says it's all right stay home and listen if you're unable to get to the house of god but we need we need each other i need you i need to see your face i need to see your smile i need to see your worship it inspires me it's a great inspiration to see you the way you worship god here in this church i notice from the moment they they sound the first note and these praises say you don't have to pump them up shout i mean right off they start dancing praising god and and they're well how in the world did sister asher who got to do that we ought to do that we ought that's great the bible said to collect your hands all your people it says in 150 psalms it tells all the ways that we're to worship god and that is simply a wonderful wonderful thing and i hope i never get to if when i can't dance i can pat my foot and i can clap my hands the facts do not suggest that we should never sit down that would be nearly impossible however medical professionals are worried about how much we sit more than one half of the average person's day is spent sitting watching television or working a computer if you've been to a restaurant lately look around you at all the people sitting there almost every one of them will have a phone out or they hardly look up they can't yeah you can't get their attention they they and it says the half you know look at this more than half the average person's day is spent sitting watching television or working at a computer in fact several studies have produced grim findings including the extremely high number of diseases developed by those who have inactive lifestyles one research one researcher suggests moments when you're sitting think of ways to stand move as much as you can when you're not exercising it appears this research has led many to respond by focusing on standing more often and for longer periods of time for the benefit of their own health watches fitness bands now alert people to stand multiple times a day more and more office cubicles are seeing the replacement of the standard desk with standing desks and you know you know on the farm we didn't have to be told to stand we we had to stand sometime four o'clock in the morning you started milking the cows feeding the hogs and the horses and and we called it chores you did a day's work calling it chores before you went to work or before you went to school when you got in from work or when you got in from school you had chores and you do another day's work uh that and they didn't call it work that they just called it do anybody ever heard that term doing the chores doing the chores some of you old timers know what i'm talking about it definitely seems standing can help physical health but perhaps the same can be said about spiritual health the metaphor of standing is used often in scripture to depict an individual who is resolute and determined in their faith ephesians 6 13 says wherefore take unto you the whole armor of god that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand stand just stand spiritually speaking standing is not a physical condition you may be flat on your back because of sickness but you can be standing in your faith you may be knocked to your knees in battle but though through prayer you can be standing in faith as the focus thought in our lesson tonight states we must stand in faith even if things do not seem to work out in our favor refuse to sit in faith it's not good for your spiritual well-being stay active stay uh stay challenged stay ready to face the challenge first corinthians 16 13 paul says watch ye stand fast in faith quit you like men be strong be strong quit you like men and be strong how do you be strong the bible says let the weak say i'm strong the bible tells about a woman in the bible says she had the spirit of infirmity now it didn't say she had an infirmity such as the spirit of infirmity and i looked at that a while back and not trying to pick on anybody but it it resonated with me and i'm not preaching this as a doctrine but i think we can develop a spirit of infirmity you know i guess every one of us has that spirit to a certain extent if you don't believe it you start talking to somebody about their ailment whatever it is and i'll guarantee you that that nine times out of ten and what did i tell you about when i went to thought did i show you my scar by my hospitalization and they'll tell you all about how how long they stayed now now don't we all do that you don't i do i have and and we tell about our adversities because whatever whatever you've got i've had it and i hear you but that's a spin and you can have a spirit of of defeat you can develop an attitude of a poor old me nobody likes me uh you heard that fella that had such a complex he couldn't go to the football game because when they gathered together in a huddle he thought sure that's talking about him and some folks suggest that that's sensitive and the church says somebody fails to shake my hand or somebody and maybe they don't know one thing in this world about what you're thinking well don't develop a don't develop a spirit of infirmity have a have a spirit of positivity you know the store the little girl she was on sitting on the sidewalk and the rich lady wanted to go out slumming and seeing how the poor folks live and had her chauffeur drive down the street and and passed by that little girl and her braces were all her face was all dirty and she rolled down and went and said the little girl she said you're pretty dirty aren't you honey oh she said i'm even prettier when i'm cleaned up may god give us a spirit of standing and give us a spirit of being positive and don't don't don't don't be like zig ziglar's story the little boy that told his daddy thought he's gonna fail this math test and he said son you gotta you gotta be positive don't talking what he said daddy i'm positive i'm gonna fail it well you can develop a spirit of positive defeat don't be like that have a spirit of standing i'm going to stand for jesus and i'm going to be a winner i'm a winner i am not a loser i don't have a spirit of infirmity it seems that uh standing is good for your health what's you stand fast in the faith quit you like men and be strong be strong don't don't dwell on your weaknesses dwell on your your strength and every one of us i want to tell you something there is no matter what you've got there's somebody that's got it worse than you and you need to thank god that all is as well my i can hear my mother praying at this in my my mind's vision now she would say lord i thank you that all things are as well with me as they are i thank you that all is as well as they are they could be worse and our lesson is taken from the book of daniel and we're going to get get into that lesson hopefully here in a little bit but let me do a little hopscotching in the the book of daniel the first chapter uh verse 3 of the king spake unto espionage the master of his eunuchs that he should bring certain of the children of israel and of the king seed and of the princes children in whom was no blemish now we're going to spiritualize some of these things he was talking about physically no blemish on me they had to be be perfect no deformities and no handicap but you know what god is looking for people today that don't have a blemish don't have a blemish on your character don't have a blemish on your reputation now i know you may have done this or that or the other who among us haven't sent all we like sheep have gone astray all of sin no not there's none righteous no not one the reason for that is god when we repented of all sins he cast he said he would cast your sins in the depths of the sea and he would not remember them against you anymore now if god don't remember your sins and there's not oblivion if if he can't find a sin if he can't find the blemish nobody else better not because you don't have any evidence give the lord a handclap [Applause] where is your where is your evidence i've preached it so many times that when when when peter got over zealous and they came to get jesus and peter whipped out a sword and uh cut a servant of the higher priest's ear off to clean off i mean cut his ear off well now that's uh that that's against the law in every language that's assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to commit murder jesus reached down and picked up the man's ear and stuck it back on and i have laughed about that for some reason i get the biggest kick out of that story because in my mind i imagine peter being arrested and accused of assault with a deadly weapon and they take him to court standing before the judge and the judge said uh what's this man in charge well he's charged with assault with the dead well what did he do i said he cut a man's ear off cut his ear off yes he did here's the witnesses that saw it well where's the victim right here's the victim the the servant of the high priest said let's see what ear did he cut off that one right there that's attached to your head where's the evidence well here you tell me he that ear was cut off let me get the fellas in the white coats this guy's crazy telling us to thank god let me tell you something he eliminates the evidence of your wrongdoing he gives you his righteousness and he forgets everything you've done that's wrong and now that you can walk in faith and believe god because you are a nuke [Music] you are a new creature in christ jesus that says new not just remain nothing but you are a new creature in christ jesus that's why we baptize you in his name you you can go down and say you come up and your sins have been remitted no blemish on them well favored skillful in all wisdom and cunning and knowledge and understanding science and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace and whom they might teach the learning of the tongue of the chaldeans you see the devil wants the best we got and he wants to he wants to convert it to his use he wants to change use if he if he possibly can he wants to change you and and notice the way he went about changing shadrach meshach and abednego and the king appointed them a daily provision of the kingsmen the devil has got a daily provision for every one of us man you've got radio television newspaper you got the the the internet you've got the face time you got uh i i can't even remember all the things because i don't i don't don't use it and uh what uh what is it like what's some of the things starts with a friend uh well whatever they call it you you got friends on it and just goes oh no no then facebook yeah and and then uh there's that instance thing oh i can't i can't remember all that business but anyway anyway uh we will get a daily we get a daily dose of gossip man if you want a little gossip you just get all that and and just this before you know it that you got you got more gossip than you can deal with a daily dose don't let the da da they gave them the daily dose of the king's provision of the king's meat wine which they drank nourishing them three years at the end of the three years that they might stand before the king now among these were the children of judah daniel hananiah michelle and azariah unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names for he gave the unto daniel the name bill chaser and to hananiah and to shadrach michelle meshach and azeroa of abendigo he wants to give them a different name he wants to give he wants to remove their thinking he wants to change them and this is what the devil is trying to do to every don't you let him do it now daniel purposed in his heart he had a purpose and he chose he he chose to make that a purpose did you know that there's so many things you can choose on your own i can't choose that how tall i am i can why i can wear shoes with taller heels but that don't make me any taller i i can't i can't choose the color of a skin i can't say that i can i can put on makeup but that don't change it you know i can't i can uh dye my hair but i can't deny my face it's just the way it is there's some things you just can't change you and daniel purposed it but there's some things i can change and i'm going to purpose in my heart that i'm not going to be a spiritual wimp i'm not going to be a spiritual lazy dude i'm not going to be a spiritual inactive person i am going to stay active i'm not going to get me an old rocking chair sit down and let somebody bring me a glass of water and watch it and do everything until i can't do it for myself i'm going to keep doing it i don't intend to say i am going to stand and i'll tell you something else i've still got eyesight enough that i can read that old book and and i can start i get started reading trouble with me preparing a lesson i get i get on so many uh pig paths and rabbit trails and uh this jumps up and pastor will preach something i'll get i'll get 10 no i'll get 10 texts i i'll write that i'm going to preach i'll preach and the word of god has so many wonderful marvelous things uh brother flannery can't testify without giving me a sermon yeah there'll be something that brother uh steve blevitt brother beloved he's constantly giving his uh brother dean we'll see time through the years we've talked about the word of god and it's just just floods my soul well i purposed it in my heart that that's what i'm going to nourish my soul with and this daniel purpose in his heart that he would not defile himself with a portion of the king's meat nor with the wine with which he drank therefore he requested of the princes of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself now i i purposed a long time ago and i i knew and i know still yet to this day things are going to they changed in the bible they even changed dispensations there's a lot of things changed there's going to be a lot of things changing in our day we can change the size of the building the style of the building i i can i don't know if any of you here can remember this but i can remember 123 west columbia we had a flat top bait in fact we worshipped in a tent one whole summer until it got so cold that we couldn't worship under the tent then rented a lodge hall up over grocery store on washington avenue we moved back and built a flat top basement didn't have the money to pour a floor we had a dirt floor now this was our main what a tent this was a uh and and uh we we had it we put sawdust on the floor just like it was a tent later on we put gravel down and we worshiped the best we could with what we had we didn't do that because that's what we wanted to do that's all we had to do my pastor bishop l a parent came down from pontiac to preach from us and and the old pulpit we had there had we had a two gallon bucket sitting on the pulpit and there was a leak right over and it was leaking and drop dropping in that bucket while bishop preached in his top coat well that wasn't our choice and that's all right i don't want to go back to that i don't want to go back to that old days of the tent and so forth but i have purpose in my heart we can change this this and this there's something you can't you can't change the doctrine you can't stand the standards it's got it's going to remain jesus the mighty god the everlasting father holiness is still god's lowest standard the bible plainly says without holiness did i hear an echo without holiness without what listen it's amazing today you can get in some of the crowds even if some that are apostolic you can just feel a drawn-up spirit when you mention holiness wholeness my wife is out of the fort mountain holiness church that was their first name the letter changed to the church of the lord jesus christ but it was named it was called the fork mountain the holiness church what's wrong with holiness i wrote an article on that what's wrong with all this without holiness no man shall see the lord pastor preached a few weeks ago months ago about even the horse's bridle there's going to be a hole in us even the vessels that got whole as a man alive if there's a skillet that's going to have hover disorders and we're not going to get away from holiness we're not gonna get away from the standards of the bible living walking talking dressing and being holiness people somebody say man well in the second year of the reign of nebuchadnezzar nebuchadnezzar dreamed a dream where with his spiritual trouble let me uh rush through that because i'm not even into the lesson he had a dream that troubled him me woke up and couldn't go about to sleep well back then the kings they hired wise men today they called them presidential advisors and uh the uh these wise men of his he called him and said fellas i've got a job for you to do now um i had a dream last night it says trouble me and now then you're my wise man you're my advisors so i want you to give me the interpretation of that dream and if you can't if you don't tell me the interpretation i'm going to have you cut in pieces i'm going to have your houses tore down and make a dunghill out of them now that was pretty bleak outcome and they said no problem no problem just tell us what is your dream always said i can't remember what it was you got to tell me what it was now that's another story that's another story you've got to tell me the interpretation of my dream but first of all you've got to tell me what i dreamed i know i dreamed something that troubled me they said there's not a person on the earth that can do that none of the gods could do that so he gave orders all the wise men in his whole kingdom would be put to death well they started rounding up the wise men and they got to daniel and uh uh shadrach meshach and abednego and daniel said well what's the hurry what's the big rush well the king said to put all the wise men to death you're wise man said uh let me let me let me talk to the king we went before the king he said king so i serve the god almighty that knows everything give me time to go back and talk to shadrach meshach and abednego and give us a little time to consult our god and i'll tell you your dream and tell you the meaning of it he was confident that his god was not going to let him down he had faith that his god was going to reveal to him the the unknown dream and the meaning of the dream he was standing on his faith he didn't know the dream any more than the other wise men did it was totally unknown to him but he was standing on his faith believing god that god was going to tell him the dream the king said all right i'll give you a little time daniel said don't put the wise men to death just yet so he went back to uh shadrach meshach and abednego and they began to pray and god and daniel consulted god and and gave all reverence and and uh respect to his god and asked god to give him the dream went to bed that night and god gave him a vision listen if you purpose in your heart what you're going to stand for if you have purpose in your heart that you're going to stand by faith no matter what comes no matter what the outcome is i know i don't know what the outcome's going to be but i know what i'm going to do and that night god gave him a vision and he saw the dream and he went before the king and he told the king his dream and the king turned right and started worshiping daniel actually worshiped daniel and said daniel your god is the only god your god is the god of all gods your god is the god of all kings and daniel's faith he stood for something somebody coined the phrase if you won't stand for something you'll fall for anything you better have something you can stand for now you do not have to be arrogant insulting daniel wasn't he went before the king very respectful he showed all the respect to do to a king but he was resolute and what he was going to do and god honored his faith and he stood and he told the king his dream and save his life and shadrach meshach and abednego and all the wise men well we'll skip over to the next chapter chapter 3. and let's read that in daniel 3 14. now the king got a great idea here if that be the case it sounds like that vision that daniel had of this tall 60 feet tall had a head of gold chest of brass and goes right on down to feet of of clay and daniel said you're that you're that king that's the golden head you're the head of of all the kingdom you're the you're the greatest king alive on planet earth and he was at that time he was the he was the greatest king babylon ever had and daniel told him that that you're the great now he also said when when got to the the feet so you're going to defeat all these other kings but there's a stone that's going to come rolling out of babylon it's going to strike that image with at his feet when it's it's part clay and and and part brass and it's going to crush it to pieces and and he's then another king is going to rise that's going to rule forever now that's not going to be nebuchadnezzar that's a that's an unknown king whose name you do not know at this time well the king decided he was going to make it come to pass in his way and so he erected a statue of golden a golden statue 60 feet tall and then he wanted to really elaborate he really wanted to get the attention he called all of his as his kings or all of his princes and and all of his leaders and everybody all together said we're going to have a certain day a dedication we're going to dedicate this statue and everybody's going to know that that statue represents me and i'm that great king and everybody now that i want a great band and i want the band to play you're going to have harps and all kind of musical instruments and we're going to have the fanfare uh of here comes the the king and and when they hear this now then he gave a decree every one of you when you hear the sound of this music what a celebration is man alive what a celebration here this great king the greatest one that's ever been the greatest one babylon ever had and now then all we're going to do is when you hear all this fanfare and this this music playing everybody's going to bow down and they're going to worship this image well when they did that there was out of this vast multitude of people there was three fellows standing out there that did not bow and they came to the kingdom well let's read he called him in and said i hear that you threw fellas didn't bow down to this image when they you heard the sound of all the music they said no we didn't furthermore we're not going to but nebuchadnezzar spake and said to them is it true or shadrach meshach and abednego that you do that do not yet serve my gods nor worship the golden image which i've set up now if you be ready that at what time you hear the sound of the quartet the flute the harp the sacrament the sultry and the dulcimer and all kind of music you shall fall down and worship the image which i've made well and be fine if you do that but if ye worship not ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace and then he seared it with a question and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands who is that god king do you not remember some commentary says as much as 20 years prior to that that daniel interpreted a dream for him do you not remember you worshiping daniel do you not remember when you said that daniel's god was the god of gods and and the god of kings have you forgot that so soon and who is that god shadrach meshach and abednego answered and said unto the king o nebuchadnezzar shadrach says to meshach you know we better give this some consideration this is this won't be too bad we just we just bow down we don't we don't know what we're saying and and bendigo said no they didn't counsel over whether or not they should worship a little bit or whether or not they were going to that there was not the least there was no hesitation there was no time to make up their mind here's what here's what the scripture says we are not careful to answer then this matter now you're talking to the king the man that's got the power of life and death we are not careful to answer you if it's so be our god whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning party furnace and he will deliver us out of thy hand o king or you talk about somebody already purposely settled in their mind what are you going to do about a certain situation would you bear with me if i get a little graphic i don't mean to be graphic but uh have you made up your mind what you're going to do if if the opportunity comes along that you can make a sizable sum of money with a shady deal have you decided already what you're going to do or are you going to think about it uh the young girls are out of here in the boy younger boys have you already really made up in your mind what you're going to do when passion begins to to strike you and and your boyfriend or girlfriend is ready to yield to the lust of the flesh are you going to debate over what you're going to do are you going to give in the story goes of the young boy and the young girls uh setting lovers lame the boy said would you like for us to get in the would you like to get in the back seat and she said no i want to set up here with you we used to have a little story that we used to tell girls uh here's a quarter and uh when you're out with that boy if he propositions you and tell him stop at the next pay phone and here's a pastor gave me a quarter to call him and and i'm going to ask him what he thinks about it that usually settles it but you don't have to use payphone anymore everybody's got a cell phone it's not the phone it's not the quarter it's what's in the heart if you've already settled in your mind what you're going to do under the circumstance are you going to lie they call it white lies if it's to your advantage are you going to tell the truth the fellow put a quarter in the machine and a borough canada came out in five quarters right off he started putting more quarters and you see how many he could get if that's gonna keep from paying like that well have you decided beforehand now they said we are not careful to answer thee in this manner if it be so our god is able to deliver us from the burning fire furnace and he will deliver us but the king comes back and they said but if not if he don't deliver us be it known unto thee o king that we will not serve thy gods nor worship the golden image which thou has set up ladies and gentlemen boys and girls faith says you're going to stand regardless of what the outcome is oh yes if joseph had known in advance how it was going to turn out when potiphar's wife propositioned him to go to bed with her it would have been a different story but when she propositioned him day after day and finally one day grabbed him by the collar of the coat he stripped out of his coat and left her screaming and not knowing what the outcome was going to be he made up his mind he said how could i do this to my master and to my god he had already developed a conscience and a faith that he was going to be true to and listen if we haven't made up our mind before the trial gets here you don't know what you're going to do they said we're not careful to answer thee in this va if our god don't deliver us we're still not going to bow down to your regard go ahead and give the lord a hand clap we'll just stand your feet with us please then was nebuchadnezzar full of fury made him so angry and the form of his vintage was changed against shadrach meshach and a minute ago therefore he spake and commanded that they should be that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was uh want to be heated and they commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind shadrach meshach and abednego and cast them into the burning fire furnace then these men were bound and their coach the hosen their hats their other garments and were cast in the midst of the burning fiery furnace therefore because of the king's commandment was urgent and the furnace exceeding hut the flames of the fire slew those men and took up shadrach meshach and a minute ago these three shadrach meshach and abednego fell down bound to the midst of the burning fiery furnace then nebuchadnezzar the king was astounded and rose up in haste and spake and said unto his counselors did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire and they said then they answered unto the king true okay he answered and said lo i see four men loose walking in the midst of the fire midst of the fire and they have no hurt and the form of the fourth is like the son of god i i don't have the scripture before me but in the 11th chapter of hebrews the 11th chapter is a as a encyclopedia warriors of the faith but way over in the latter part of chapter 11 after tells about all those from from noah right on down and their faithfulness and how god delivered them but then it uses this term it said and they were others there were others that did not receive their deliverance the bible said of whom the world was not worthy they many of them were delivered but many of them died in faith the bible said not having received the promise
