Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The text: 'Asleep on the door'

  • He calls for the Bibles and reads Luke 11:5-8 entire — the friend who goes at midnight asking three loaves for a friend come in from his journey, the householder answering from within that the door is now shut and his children are with him in bed, and the promise that, though he will not rise because he is his friend, because of his importunity he will arise and give as many as he needs — and announces his thought: 'Asleep on the door.' We are not asleep, he says, but there is somebody knocking on the door, and it is time to open the door.
  • The parable's setting is the sermon's hinge: the visitor has arrived and the host has nothing to set before him, the family is all in bed together, and to open the door the whole family has to get up. God is going to give us the greatest revival we have ever had, but it may mean that we have to move our pillow and move our blanket — it may mean we have to get uncomfortable.

Scriptures: Luke 11:5-8

The pillow and the blanket

  • The other night he could not sleep and got up about 1:45 in the morning; with construction going on in the house (Brother and Sister Mitchell are lodging there), the only place was the basement, where he found a pillow — the goose-down pillow that had been under his mother's head when she passed away, one his stepfather had taken from his own mother. He answered his emails, then laid on the couch and worked that pillow until he got it just right: there is nothing like a feather pillow, and it takes a while to get a pillow fixed.
  • Every night of this conference week he has gone over to his granddaughter's house — '[name redacted] is my granddaughter and this is her waffle blanket' — and he has looked at her while they fixed the blanket together and got it all fixed. It takes a while to get some things fixed the way you want them, and once they are fixed you do not want anybody bothering your pillow or your blanket.

Consumed with reaching our world

  • He declares his love for the Hispanic people and for all the people he has worked with — they put up with him when he was a young man and he made all kinds of mistakes — and he greets the missionaries by their fields: Hopkins in Panama, Sister Dallas in Ireland, the Crosleys in Argentina, the Gracians in Papua New Guinea, the Turners in the Baltic republics. We have got to connect with the people that we love, and he will do anything in the world to try to reach them.
  • He is consumed with one thing: reaching our world with the gospel. This is the day of the church and of the power of the church, and he is not going back to St. Louis the way he came. It is time to stand up and do it, time to get radical, time to change the paradigm and the way we do some things — beginning with getting rid of territorialism.
  • The knocking is heard around the world: can you hear the cries of the people in Asia? Pictures have just come in of street ministry in Sri Lanka, where Compassion Services is working, and the medical team has just returned — they told him a long time ago we could not have a medical team, but now a 501(c)(3) is being formed with the medical people. He preached in Australia ten days or two weeks before and people were down in the altar praying until he lost his voice, and in a few weeks he goes to Greece to preach on Mars Hill.
  • He speaks from the position he took when he left a church of 1,700 members in El Salvador: people there got upset with him for bringing people in and putting them in the water when they were dirty, but they did it anyway, and in the last year they baptized over 650 people in that local church in the name of Jesus.

The pledge and the policy book

  • He pledges it that night: I believe the articles of faith of the United Pentecostal Church. He has added the question to the PowerPoint and asks new committee men eye to eye — do you believe and do you teach the international articles of faith of the United Pentecostal Church? — because that is what we must believe and teach, and that is what binds us together around the world; it is not our rules and regulations, but the articles of faith. I believe that Jesus is the Mighty God; I believe that you must repent of your sins and be baptized in Jesus' name and filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
  • He holds up the foreign missions division policy book that was shipped to him that day and reads off what is in it — vacations, SFC, vehicles, furlough, field equipment, the FMD concept, general constitutions, procedure for hiring, ministerial applications, missionary field fellowship, missionary internship, MK transitional skills, promotional ideas in North America. He refers to the book all the time, he says, but there are things more important than the policies — and he voices the comfortable man's protest himself: 'No, don't you touch my pillow. No, you leave it alone — that's my pillow, and it took me a long time to fix that pillow; that's my pillow and my blanket, that is mine.'
  • Missionaries are asked to let North American ministers come and be involved in their fields and to help them make contact, and North American pastors are charged with their territorial rights in the same breath. It works because people want to be involved: he has a list in his briefcase, recorded and documented, of over 1,500 Trinitarian ministers that have been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. We have food on the table for them, but it means somebody will have to move the pillow and move the blanket and get uncomfortable.

Raised from the dead

  • He calls missionaries Danny and Holly to stand and tells what the vice president there, Martin Gonzalez, related from Mexico: a young Mexican couple out knocking doors was called into a house and asked to pray — not for the family, but for the dead person over there in the casket. They began to call out upon the name that is above every name; all of a sudden an arm raised up out of the casket, and the man said, 'I'm hungry — I want something to eat.'
  • From Nicaragua he reads Brother Steve Nicks' testimony, read on a twelve-hour plane ride: a lady whose family were all members of another church died, and that church's pastor came over and pronounced, 'May she rest in peace, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.' Just as he finished, the pastor of the UPC church walked in — 'I'll have you know she's not your member' — and began to call in the name of Jesus: 'She's not dead; she's alive.' Her body began to convulse, she began to cough, and God raised her from the dead. It can happen in Madison, Mississippi; it can happen in Sterling Heights; it can happen in Gainesville, Florida.

Sent and baptized: the nine-year goal

  • The service turns to sending: a man is anointed and sent to China — 'Go to China in the name of Jesus' — a couple is blessed for the Netherlands, and a couple going to the Dominican Republic, to the area of La Romana, who had just baptized 19 Trinitarian pastors in that area in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Estonia a Trinitarian pastor has been baptized in the name of Jesus and is now pastoring one of their churches. In Miami he tried to behave himself and did not make it, because he has an expectancy level — and that word, he tells Brother Arnold, is going on the mirror in his office.
  • From Indonesia: a Supreme Court judge there was baptized, and she began to witness to a Muslim cleric who runs what we call a Bible school — it is not a Bible school, it is a Quran school. He began to look in the Quran and realised that Jesus was the only prophet in that book that did not have a mama and a daddy, and he concluded, 'He must be God.' They blew up a little kitty pool, took him and baptized him in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and his wife was baptized in the name of Jesus as well.
  • He announces the goal, in black and white on the board in his office: in nine years we are going to have a church in every country of the world. You know why? Because somebody is knocking at the door.

The report and the closing appeal

  • He concludes with the last three years' report — look at your neighbour and say this is what we have done: the numbers baptized in the name of Jesus in the last three years, and the numbers filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost, are called out to the congregation (the caption totals are garbled where he calls them, and are referred to here without figures). If that does not make you want to shout, there is something wrong with your shouter — because this is the day of the church, and I hear somebody knocking at the door.
  • He turns them to the screens: can you hear them crying? Over 200,000 people lost their lives just a few short weeks ago. Can you hear the cry of the father that is carrying his child — 'I want a piece of bread; I want somebody to help me'? He thanks Brother Danny Smith and Brother Andrew Tennyson, just returned from ministering to these people.
  • The close turns the title into an altar call: you can see them raised from the dead, but you have got to get out of your comfort zone — you know what you need to do with your pillow and your blanket, you need to open the door up — and the sermon ends as they lay hands on each other and pray for one another.
