Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The name revealed

  • The lesson opens with Zechariah's word that there is one Lord, and his name one.
  • Moses at the burning bush needed the name to give to Pharaoh, because authority comes in a name.
  • Isaiah promised that God's people would know his name, and know in that day that he is the one who speaks.
  • The angel told Joseph to call the child's name Jesus, for he would save his people from their sins.
  • Peter declares there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

Scriptures: Zechariah 14:9; Exodus 3:13; Isaiah 52:6; Matthew 1:21; Acts 4:12

The name put upon his people

  • In the blessing God commands through Aaron and his sons, his name would be put upon the children of Israel, and he would bless them.
  • What was promised to Israel reaches the Gentiles, upon whom his name is called.
  • On the day of Pentecost Peter joins repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ to the remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • The teacher tells of his own baptism at seven years old, when the name of Jesus was called upon him, and of Sister Reinhardt in prison ministry, who gives her own name joined to the name of Jesus.
  • Jesus is the name above every name, at which every knee should bow and every tongue confess.
  • To be baptized into Christ is to have put on Christ; Jesus commissions his church to teach all nations and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Scriptures: Numbers 6:22-27; Acts 15:17; Acts 2:38; Philippians 2:9-11; Galatians 3:27; Matthew 28:18-19

Authority in the name

  • Repentance and remission of sins are to be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
  • Peter, having no silver or gold, gives what he has: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.
  • Peter tells the wondering crowd the lame man was made strong by faith in that name, not by the apostles' own power or holiness.
  • The seventy return with joy that even the devils are subject to them through his name.
  • Authority begins in submission: submit yourselves therefore to God, then resist the devil, and he will flee.
  • Whatever is done in word or deed is to be done in the name of the Lord Jesus; the real test of bearing the name is a life that represents it.

Scriptures: Luke 24:46-47; Acts 3:6; Acts 3:11-16; Luke 10:17; James 4:7; Colossians 3:17

The warning of the seven sons, and the power

  • The seven sons of a chief priest try to adjure a demon by the Jesus whom Paul preaches, and the evil spirit answers that Jesus it knows, and Paul it knows, but not them.
  • Knowing the name is not having the name; the beaten, stripped men show the name used without its authority is only a formula.
  • Authority comes in baptism in his name; power comes after the Holy Ghost has come upon the believer, and they become witnesses.
  • He closes by reading word for word from the late Bishop Gerald Mangan's message: baptism in Jesus' name gives the vessel and the authority, and the Holy Ghost fills it with power.
  • He calls anyone never baptized in Jesus' name, or never filled with the Holy Ghost, to come, and hands the close back to the pastor.

Scriptures: Acts 19:13-16; Acts 1:8

Let's stand to our feet. And I hope everybody got a hand out. If you didn't, kind of wave your hand. and our hostesses are kind of looking around making sure they got everybody. Just wave your hand if you didn't. They'll come find you. But turn with me in the Bible to Zechariah 14 and verse 9. And as pastor said, we are we are teaching tonight. We we need a couple up here to our hostesses. I think on the second third row here, first row here, third row. I think this section right here right in the front. Uh they're coming. I see them. They're they're they're making their way. Uh the pastor's right. Um there there will be no sucking this mic down my throat and preaching tonight. This is going to be a a teaching session. And I believe we're going to study the word of God. The Bible says in Zechariah 14:9, "And the Lord shall be king over all the earth. In that day shall there be one Lord." Everyone say that. One Lord and his name one. One Lord and his name one. My title uh for this session tonight in pastor's series is this. The name of the one true God. The name of the one true God. Let's pray together. Father, we love you and we're so thankful that we know your name. And tonight we're going to find out how we can apply your name to our lives. And Lord, the authority that comes with your name. God, I pray that you'd anoint me. God, speak through me. Lord, I pray every ear. Lord, let us be let us be hearers of your word, but not just hearers, but God, we want to be doers, Lord. We want to take this home, Lord God, on Thursday and Friday and Saturday, Lord God. We want to use, Lord, will be here tonight, God. We want to put it into action. And Lord God, we want to make a difference in our community. We want to turn our city upside down for you. And the way we're going to do it is because we are people of your name. And we have the authority that is in the name of Jesus. God, help us tonight as we learn. God, help us, oh God, tonight as we just eat this word. And oh God, we want to hide it in our heart that we might not sin against you. In Jesus name we pray. And everyone said, "Amen." >> Amen. You may be seated in the house. My Lord, this is a mature group. We got all the kids, all the teens out of here. We could we could we could talk about anything here, but we're not. We're going to we're going to talk about the oneness of God. We're talking about the name of our God. Amen. For the past few Wednesdays, Pastor Carpenter, he's established from scripture, let me say that again. He's established from scripture, not from philosophy, not from opinion, but from scripture that there is only one God. And I want to build on that tonight on this Bible truth, this Bible revelation. Zechariah says there's there's one Lord and his name one. >> And the Bible connects his name to salvation to identity to authority and to the mission of the church. I'm going to say that again. I know it's in your handout, but the Bible connects his name. And I love this because if we're truly people of the name, it's because we have salvation. We have identity which is him, his authority and it also gives the mission for the church. If you want to know what is my purpose on earth, why why am I here? Why was I born? Why why did I find myself in the church? Well, let me tell you something. There's a good reason. And we are on a mission. This church is on a mission. It's the great commission. Amen. And scripture gives us another dimension through the Holy Ghost. So, not only authority, but then we're also going to study just for a few minutes power. And we're going to begin to see that God gave his church both his name and his spirit. Are you thankful for that tonight? That you've been given both his name and his spirit because one without the other isn't enough. And we're going to study that tonight. God did not reveal his name so we could know what to call him. And I know that's that's why we use names. It's a it's how we identify one another. It's how we differentiate between one person to another. But that's not really why he gave us his name. He revealed his name so a people could be called by his name. >> That's right. >> Yeah. That that means this revelation is personal. >> I'm not studying the name tonight like I'm studying ancient history. That's that's not what we're doing tonight. This is the name that we bear. That's right. >> The name of Jesus. We bear the name. What does that mean? Well, when I walk into my home, I want to bear the name. >> When I walk into the workplace, I want to bear his name. When I walk in battle, come on, saints of God. When we walk into a battle, we better bear the name of Jesus. I I just want don't want to know the name. I want to live worthy of his name. >> So, let's in the handout, let's go into into part one. the name revealed. Exodus 3:13, the Bible says, "They shall say to me, what is his name? What shall I say unto them?" This is Moses. He's at the burning bush. You remember the story? He's walking through the wilderness and he walks up on a on a a a bush that is on fire, yet it's not consumed. There's flames, yet nothing is burning, nothing is withering, nothing is turning black like it should be. And he hears a voice that says, "Take off your shoes. You're on holy ground." And God begins to talk to Moses. And and the question Moses has, Moses is a little nervous because Moses realized, he says, "I I'm nothing. I don't have any skills." He even told God, he said, "God, I can't even really talk well." And of course, history tells us that he probably had maybe either a stuttering problem. He had some kind of speech impediment of some sort in that he didn't even feel like he was even worthy to even go before Pharaoh, no less represent God. But what he truly knew was, hey, I can't go in my name. I I've got to know who you are and what your name is. I I've called you God. I And I know they had a whole lot of names for God, but these were descriptive names. But Moses, he needed a name to give Pharaoh because he understood that authority came in a name. >> And so what is the name of the one true and living God? That's that's where this all begins. This is where Moses begins this trail that we're going to follow down. Isaiah 52:6, it says, "Therefore, my people shall know my name." I like this right here. My people shall know my name. This is Old Testament. Therefore, they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak. Behold, it is I. Isaiah gives the explanation. God's people, we're going to know the name. The people that are called by his name are going to understand and know the name of the one true living God. But then we open up the New Testament and an angel speaks to Joseph, the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and says in Matthew 1:21, "And she shall bring forth a son in you, thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins." For hundreds and thousands of years, the people of the Old Testament, there was a longing to know the name of their God. And again, I've already said there's a lot of descriptive names. Jehovah Gyra, Jehovah ni, Jehovah Shama. There's a lot of of names that describe what God did for the people, but it wasn't the identity of God. It was just what he was and who he was and what he did. But oh, when Jesus was born, our God was given a name because salvation, the Bible says, he shall save his people from their sins. Salvation is now connected to the name Jesus. >> And Peter says, oh my word, in Acts 4:12, this this stuff right here gets me excited. He says, "Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we should be saved." >> Oh, come on, somebody. >> We must be saved. I believe I believe Peter might have known something about salvation. He He was the first preacher, the first pastor on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2. He wasn't just talking. He was bringing to the people what Jesus what he had learned from Jesus by walking and talking and living for the last three years, three and a half years with Jesus himself. He says neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name. And he didn't just say Jesus. He he said the name of Jesus, the name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. It's more than just Jesus. It's the name of Jesus. >> The name Moses asked about, the name Isaiah said we would know. And the na name that Peter said we must be saved by is one in the same name. It is Jesus. Come on. Are you excited? You know the name Jesus. That we're not a people wondering who we serve and hoping one day we'll find out the identity of our God. We know who our God is. Our God, his name is Jesus. >> So when I say Jesus, I need to understand what I'm saying. I'm calling on the revealed saving name of my God. >> Not a second person in a man-made trinity doctrine. Oh no. He said, "All power, woo, all power is given a mighty salvic name called Jesus that you must be saved by his name. I don't need another name when life falls apart. I don't need another name when I face fear. I don't need another name when my family needs prayer. I know the name is Jesus. I wish somebody would just give him glory in this place. I feel the Holy Ghost. I I feel there's going to be revelation in this place. There's people that have been wondering, "What do I call out? Who do I pray to?" I've told this story. My My father told me a story years ago that absolutely changed the way I look. Listen, I I was I was born in this thing. This is all I've ever known. I didn't sit in a Sunday school that t taught the trinitarian doctrine. I This is all the the oneness doctrine is all I've ever known. But my father, my mother, the revelation was revealed to them. >> Matter of fact, the year I was born, the revelation was revealed to them. And dad told me, dad said, Chad, he said it it was the craziest thing. He said, "I would begin to pray to Jesus and then start feeling bad because I wasn't praying enough to the father." And then I felt, well, maybe maybe the Holy Ghost might be getting jealous. So, I'm going to start praying to the Holy Ghost for a little while. It's confusion. But when you know the name of the Father, >> when you know the name of the Son, when you know the name of the Holy Ghost, there's no confusion. It's an obvious thing. His name is Jesus and all power is in that name. >> But scripture goes further than just revealing the name to us. God says he wants that name to be upon his people. Which brings us to part two because the name has been put upon us. Numbers 6 and 22. Let's go back Old Testament. The Bible says, "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise, ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them," and I love this right here, "The Lord bless thee and keep thee." We sing songs like this, "The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee. The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace." Come on, somebody. You like that blessing? I like that blessing right there. I want the peace of God, the peace of the Lord on my life. But then watch this right here. And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them. They shall put my name. Woo. This was before they were even revealed the name Jesus. They shall put my name upon the children of Israel. And he said, that's going to be the true blessing. This final sentence shows us something powerful about covenant identity. God wanted his name upon his people. It wasn't good enough that they followed him. It wasn't good enough that they said he was their God. He said, "I want my name on you." >> Acts 15:17. Let's let's jump back in the New Testament. And all the Gentiles. Any Gentiles in the house today? >> I'm the only one. Four of us. Okay. Rest of y'all must be like Samaritans or something. I don't know. And all the Gentiles upon whom my name is called. This wasn't just for the Jews. He said, all the Gentiles upon I like that. Upon whom my name is called, sayith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Now listen here. Here's where Peter, this is why we read love. Acts chapter 2 38. More Pentecostals have bumper stickers with that on there. We have billboards. We we have it up in up on walls. Acts 2:38. What's the big deal? Well, it's a salvation process. It's the plan of salvation. And you can find it all in one verse. Now, the whole Bible backs it up, but you can find it all in one verse. And Peter says this on the day of Pentecost. He says, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you." you. This is more than just salvation because we're about to bring the name in in the name >> of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Woo! I can't wait to to get this a little bit later and talk about this and to preach about this, but Jesus name baptism is much bigger than a denominational distinction. >> That's right. That's right. >> It's not what Oh, the only thing that separates us. It's a little name issue. We got a little water issue. >> Some sprinkles, some submerge, and you know, but we're all we're all the same. We all love Jesus. We're all the same thing. Oh, except for this one little Oh, no, no, no, no. It it's much more than just a baptismal formula. The revealed saving name of our God is being called upon the believer as we are buried with him in baptism. The same name that Moses wanted to know is a name that was called out over me and called out upon me when I was baptized in Jesus name. Come on, somebody. There's a moment when I went down into the water and the name of Jesus was called upon me. And let me tell you something. I was 7 years old. I didn't understand what was happening back then. But I sure understand what was happening now. I'm so thankful that the name of Jesus was applied to my life. Uh when I went down in the only saving name, in the name of the one that shed his blood and died for me on a tree. When I went down in that name, it gave me the authority of that name. >> I belong to Jesus. Anybody belong to Jesus? Come on. My name Oh, >> I love this. We we we're uh in the prison a couple couple we were locked up a couple weeks ago and Sister Reinhardt we were doing prison ministry and Sister Reinhardt I she just has a way they call a princess within conference within these prisons and she just has this awesome way and I I've heard this before but something the way she said it it just touched me and she began to talk about she said she told us lady she goes I know ladies that some of y'all not proud of your name not proud of your parents not proud of your history she said but let me tell you something I want to tell you my she said, "My name is Karen Reinhardt, Jesus." And man, I've heard that so many times before, but all man, light bulbs, I saw I felt like they were literal light bulbs were turned on people's heads when they started realizing, "Hold on. When I when I take on the name, I get to have the name applied to my name." Come on, think about it. You are applying the name of Jesus, we are now sons and daughters. Aba Father, we're crying. Aba Father, we're part of the family of God. We're joint hes with Christ. >> My past does not own me. >> Sin does not own me. This world does not own me. His name is upon my life. And if his name is upon your life, sin doesn't own you either. This world doesn't own you either. But Jesus says, "That's my child. That's my son. That's my daughter. My name is on their life. Philippians 2:9 says, "Wherefore God all also hath highly exalted him." Woo. Speaking about Jesus, and given him a name which is above every name. I don't care what name you come up with. And a lot of times I know we'll talk about it's greater than the name Donald Trump. It's greater than the King of England. is it's greater than this name and that name and that's all good and that preaches well. But I believe when he said a name above every other name, he was looking back to the Old Testament and he was saying I know we have a lot of names for God for God has done so much for us. But when we say Jesus, that's a name above every one of those Old Testament uh names that people love to refer to their God assh. But when we are given Jesus, it's above every name, that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. The name above every other name has been called over my life. And if you've been baptized in Jesus' name, uh, it's been called over your life, too. So stop walking around as though you have no spiritual identity. When fear tries to tell you who you are, you got to remember the name that's been applied to your life, Brother Chad. Woo! When your past tries to define you, you got to remember the name that's been applied to your life. When condemnation tries to name you, you better remember the name Jesus. >> I know who I am because I know whose name I bear. >> My God. Galatians 3 and 27. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. We're buried with him in baptism. We're baptized into Christ and in the same sense we've also put on his name. Baptism identifies me with Jesus Christ. I belong to him. I live under his lordship. That's what this means. I represent him. Matthew 28:18 and 19 Jesus came and spake unto them saying, "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth." Pastor covered this last week. If he has all power, you can't believe there's other persons because they couldn't have any power because I don't know what all means to you, but all means >> all. >> Every bit of it. All power is given unto me in heaven and earth. He said, "Go ye therefore." Okay, right here, Jesus said, "My name has the power." And now he's about to commission. He says, "Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them." Well, we just read. What are we supposed to be baptizing in? The name of Jesus. He says, "You got to go baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost." We already just read, Peter already preached, "What name are we be buried in? What name are we be baptized in?" And Jesus simply says, he says, you got to go into all nations. You got to teach them and you got to put them down in water for the remission of their sins. And don't just do it for remission. Do it in my name >> for the remission of sins. The word power in verse 18 is translated as exusia. It speaks of authority or Jewish diction and the right to act. Catch that right there. It's it's it's jurisdiction. You know what that means? But then also it's the right to act. He's given us the authority to go into all nations in his name. >> He possesses all authority. Then he sends his church. Baptism doesn't just make his his authority, but it also gives me authority because I have his name. Baptism identifies me with the one to whom all authority belongs. >> That means I never have to manufacture authority. >> We're going to talk about it in just a minute. I don't have to make myself spiritually impressive. >> I don't have to convince I don't even have to convince hell that I'm somebody >> cuz I'm not. I represent somebody. What does the Bible say? The Bible says they know his name and they tremble. >> Even the demons, even the even the spiritual world, the the the the the spiritual darkness, they understand who he is and they trump. It's not about who we are. It's about who we represent. My confidence is not in me. Oh no. My confidence is in the one who I have his name. I don't have authority because I know the name. I have authority because I belong to the one whose name I bear. >> There's a difference. Authority flows out of relationship and submission. >> And I know that word submission is not always a word people like to hear, but you can't have his name without being submitted to him. So the million-dollar question is this. What do I do with the authority that is given to me by his name? Authority has a purpose. Jesus gave his church authority because Jesus gave his church a mission. The great commission is our mission. The book of Acts shows believers using the name. You read through the whole book of Acts and you're going to see believers using the name of Jesus in real situations with real people and real opposition. And somebody said, "Yes, a lot of opposition." Major part of my study for tonight's lesson on the oneness of God in the name of that God is not only knowing the name, but also understanding what we can do with his name. So look with me in Luke 24 and verse 46 and 47. The Bible says, "And said unto them, thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, that rep and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning right here in Jerusalem." They're in Jerusalem. To preach, let's talk about the word preach. And I know the American Christian church, you think you got to have a pulpit and a microphone to preach. But when you really look up the definition of preach, it means to proclaim, teach, spread, propagate, expound, explain, and make known. >> When it says to go and preach in his name, it's not talking about we need a bunch of people with microphones with with cordless microphones. It's saying we need somebody to proclaim, to teach, to spread, propagate, expound, explain, make known his name among all nations. We've already been authorized to tell somebody about Jesus. We don't wait for the pastor to ask you to go witness to somebody. You've already been commissioned to go witness to somebody. It's already the permission is there. We don't need cultures permission. What Jesus authorized us to preach, we've already been commissioned to do. >> Acts 3 and 6. And this is the first use of authority after the day of Pentecost. So, we have in our in our Bible. Acts chapter 3, we know. Acts chapter 2, day of Pentecost. Acts chapter 3, the very first thing that takes place. Peter and John are going to see how much authority and power they received. In Acts chapter 2, Peter says to this guy, this this beggar, he's easy he's asking. He's begging. He's he's he's he's wanting alms. And that was a thing back then. They would sit near the house of the Lord and they would they would ask these these the these good Jewish people as they were coming to worship. They they would they would beg and ask for alms. And and Peter, you know this story. He simply says, "Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee." And here is where he brings authority into the subject. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. >> Peter meets a need that's greater than his human resources. He didn't have money. He was a preacher. He's poor. He says, "I don't have it. Don't have it to give, but such as I have." At the same time, he understands who he represents. Acts 3:11. Now, here we go. We have Peter explaining to the authority what authority he just used. Here we go. And as a lame man which was healed held Peter and John. I like that right there. Here he is. He's got Peter and John. All the people ran together unto them and the porch that is called Solomon's greatly wondering. And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the Peter, "Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this, at this miracle, at this at this great healing? Or why look ye at me earnestly as though by my own power or me and John, by our own power or holiness we had made this man walk?" He said, "The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob." And I I wish I had time to read all through this, but he he begins to kind of tell him what's up right here. He even talks about the one that you crucified. He goes all the way to verse 16. And then he says, "By his name, through faith in his name hath made this man strong whom you see and know." You know this guy. This guy's been crippled all his life. Yay. The faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. >> Woo. faith in the name of Jesus. He said, he said, "It's not me. My name's Simon Peter. My name don't mean nothing, but we come in the name of the one you crucified, but he's also the one who sent his spirit on the day of Pentecost. We come in his name, the same name we were baptized in in Jerusalem when the Holy Ghost filled over 3,000 people. We come in his name." Faith does not mean I control the result. Faith means I know who I'm authorized to call upon. And somebody ought to give that name praise right now. If you know the name that has all power and all authority, it takes the pressure off us. I don't personally I can't heal anybody, but I'm so thankful that I know a name that can heal. Right. >> Such a basic teaching, but so many people miss this. And my responsibility as a believer that has the name of God applied to my life is to pray. >> So, so some sometimes the word pray, prayer, praying, we we think about our our daily prayer. We think about devotion. We we think about, man, oh, I forgot to pray today. Before I go to bed, I got to make sure I kneel down at the bed and pray. I forgot to pray and pray. Let me tell you something. Praying is where we use our authority that's been given to us by his name. Praying. When tell when somebody tells you they're sick, pray. I know this is so simple, but I'm I'm just I'm going to say it anyways. I think people miss it. When somebody tells you, "My family's falling apart." >> Just pray. Just say, "Hey, can I take you by the hand?" >> Can I pray for you right here? >> Yeah. You have that kind of power. You got that kind of authority. You're people of the name. >> I know pastor can do it. I know first lady can do it. >> You can do it. >> You're filled with the same spirit they're filled with. You've been baptized in the same name they've been baptized in. You have the same power and authority given to you as a believer. >> Take him by the hand as we begin to pray. Say, "Hey, can I pray for you? My God in heaven, your name is Jesus and all power is in your name. And God, I know right now you can heal this marriage. God, you can put this family back together. Nothing is impossible for you. Lord, you said with you all things are possible. I know it looks like it's impossible, but I'm taking this brother by the hand and believing that you can put his marriage back together in Jesus' name. Always. And in Jesus name. >> Don't say in the great name. In the holy name. I know it's holy. I know it's great. But come on, use the word Jesus. We're allowed to use the word Jesus. Do you know there's a time in Jewish history when they were not allowed to even write Jehovah? They had to use a they had to use a short they they they could only they they they could only use a short just a paraphrase of the name because they thought that if they if they said it or if they wrote it somehow that was sacriiggious and it was it was somehow uh it was somehow a detriment to their walk with God. But oh my God, we've been given a name and we can use the name Jesus. If we've been given a name and we can use it, we have authority to use it. Why in the world would we not want to use it? >> I'm teaching about the ways we can take advantage of of the authority we've been given. And then I like this one. We can stand against spiritual opposition. In Luke 10 and 17, the Bible says, "And the 70 return again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name." The spiritual realm, even the realm of spiritual darkness recognizes the authority in the name of Jesus. That frees us from being intimidated by the darkness. We don't have to be intimidated. >> But look with me in James 4:7 because here we go. It says submit. There's that word submit yourselves therefore to God. I talked about this earlier. And then the next part is resist the devil and he will flee from you. The authority to stand against hell flows from the submission to God. The the verse could have easily James could have easily just said, "Resist the devil and he will flee from you." But that's not what he said. He said, "Submit yourself therefore to God." Then he said, "Resist the devil." You got to have submission in your life before I start rebuking anything. I need to ask myself, am I submitted? >> The strongest believer is not necessarily the loudest believer. The strongest believer is a submitted believer. >> A submitted life has authority. A submitted home. I want a submitted home because a submitted home has authority. A submitted church has authority. >> If we want to stand with authority, I need to live under authority. >> Hell doesn't have to be impressed with me. Hell has to just recognize the authority of Jesus that I represent. So we got to stop being intimidated by the thought that that we are not impressive enough. This is not about how impressive I am. This is about who sent me. Colossians 3:17. Whatsoever you do in word or deed, how do we do it? Do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus. The the name isn't just what I use when I need a miracle. The name is the authority I live under every day. Talking about the name. I'm talking about a lot of times we'll we'll preach doctrine and we'll preach the howto and the why. But I this is just going this is a study going a little bit deeper. This is how we use the authority that we've been given. Most of our walk with God is not going to be Acts chapter 3. I I I wish I wish that my life was made up of miracles and signs and wonders. I wish every day of my life I just walk in, walk through the mall and touch people and pull people to their feet and bring people out of wheelchairs. That that would be an amazing oh my what a life that would be. But you know who would really get the glory for that. But my life is just like your life. Raising a family, going to work, having conversations, responding to people. The real test of whether I bear his name is whether my life represents his name. It's not how many miracles I perform. It's does my life represent the name of Jesus. Does your life represent the name of Jesus? That takes authority beyond the dramatic moments. And let me tell you something. I'm thankful for healing. And if God wants to use me to perform miracles, thank God I I I'll do it. But the greatest use of his authority is showing people who Jesus truly is. >> Don't measure spiritual authority o only by what happens down here in the altar. Can my family see Jesus in me? Can my co-workers see Jesus in me? I if I bear his name, I should represent his character. I should be a man of character. If I truly have the name of Jesus applied in my life, if I'm truly representing him, if we are the church, if we are the body of Christ, we truly have got to represent him the way he wants to be represented. >> So the book of Acts, I'm moving quickly, gives us a warning. It keeps this message from turning the name into a formula. Because here we go. A lot of people, you know, you have Peter, such as I have give I thee. Man, that sounds so good. Boy, that sound woo. I like to walk around to say such as I have and walk around pulling people to their feet. And obviously that's great. But now let's read about some boys who thought they had it. Acts chapter 19, this is quite a story right here. The Bible says in verse 13, "We adjure thee or or simply we command you by a higher authority. We adjure thee by Jesus whom Paul preacheth." Watch this right here. And there were seven sons of SA, a Jew, a chief of the priest, which did so. Now, now we understand that that the these these these seven sons of the chief priest. They thought they had authority because they heard Paul preaching with authority. They watched him. They watched him get up and they watched him use the name Jesus and they thought, you know, we're going to try this out. But I like this right here because as they're trying to cast these these evil spirits out of this man, the evil spirits within the man spoke up and answered and said, "Jesus, we've heard of him. We know this Jesus." And Paul, I know him. But this evil spirit within this man said, "But who are you?" and these these seven sons of SA that had used the name without the authority of the name. This is the deal right here. You can use the name, but you got to have the authority to use the name. >> See, Peter had a relationship and he was authorized to use the name. Paul had a relationship and he was authorized to use the name. But these dudes just knew how to talk the talk. >> That's right. >> Come on, brother Ferguson. And some people, the danger of growing up apostolic is we kind of know how to talk to talk and walk the walk. We kind of we know when to raise our hands at the right time. We know when the preacher starts lifting his voice, we it's time to start clapping. And boy, if he if he keeps on lifting his voices and he keeps then we know it's time to start standing and clapping. >> Come on. We We been brought up. We We know we since we're under the pew, sleeping under the pew, we know we know how to do this. And and I believe these these these preachers kids, these these priests kids, these PKs, they they had watched these others minister so long that they just assumed all we got to do is use the same name he uses and that's all. That's it. It's good enough. We can talk the talk. But oh, the sad thing about this story is this demon inside. This man gave him power to absolutely beat the stuffing out of these seven boys. >> That's right. and not only humiliate them by beating them up, but tore all their clothes off and made them run through the streets naked. >> It's one thing to bleed, one thing to have a black eye and missing a tooth or two. It's another thing to be doing it and running through the streets naked. I mean, I'm talking he just absolutely But this is this was what was trying to be taught. This is why it's in the word of God. This is why we find this passage and this story in the word of God because we got to be careful. Just because we know the name doesn't mean we have the name. It doesn't mean we have the authority of the name. But we've got to be buried in water. That's where baptism comes into play because when we are baptized in his name, we take on the name and we take on the authority of the name of Jesus. And somebody shout amen. >> Amen. I need my own prayer life. >> Pastor Carpenter's prayer life is not going to get me to heaven. >> I need my own walk, my own consecration. I need my own relationship. I can't depend on my parents or my grandparents. It's got to be mine. The sons of SA, they learned a very hard lesson because the name of Jesus is not just a name to use just because you hear somebody else using it, but you've got to have the power in the name. >> So, I'm moving quickly to a close. So, here we are. The distinction, the differentiation between the name authority, which means exuzia, that's the that's the name, the word exusia, which means authority. That's in baptism. But then we find the power that's in the Holy Ghost. Acts 1:8. But ye shall receive power. That word is dunamis. Power after the Holy Ghost has come upon you. And ye shall be witnesses unto me. Dunamis. Power. This is the ability. This is the might of divine enablement. Power is ability. Authority is authorization. Okay. Authorization. Power is ability, but authority is what authorizes us to use the power. A lot of people asking God, God, I want more more power. God, I want more power, God. And God's saying, I've already given you enough power and I've also given you authority to go do something with it. Why don't you go do something with it? Stop waiting to feel power before you start obeying. Use your authority. I I'm going to you've got a hand out so you can kind of see what I was going to say, but I want to end very quickly. But there was there was a a a a a message. I heard it because the times decades ago I'm moving through so many p through pages here. Dear Lord have mercy. Matter of fact, stand with me. Stand with me. Brother Jeff preached a message. Preached a message at Because of the times. It was probably, if I remember right, it was in 1992. I don't know why that number comes back, but I believe it's 1992. But he preached a message called a miracle is looking for a vessel. Yeah. One I know some I know y'all a lot of y'all have heard that and it's one of my favorite messages. My god, it'll preach. But my favorite part of the message, and no disrespect to brother Arnold, but the late Bishop Gerald Mangan, Geral Mangan stepped up after man, people been praying the altar. They've been singing. He steps up and he says, he had this little raspy voice. He said, "Brother Arnold, I want to finish your message." And like any wise person would do, he said, "Here's the microphone. Take over." And in the end, in the end of my message, I'm just going to read to you word for word what Bishop Mangan what he said. He said this. He said, "When you are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, something powerful takes place." Jesus said, "Except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." He said, "There is a negative and a positive in that statement. The water," he said, becomes a shield. In that water is where you receive your body. It's where you receive your vessel. But then he said, "Then the Holy Ghost comes in and fills that body. And now are we the sons of God." He said, "When you're baptized in the name of Jesus, authority is given to you and the blood is applied and the authority is transferred." Brother Tony, I like that right there. The authority is transferred. Woo. He says, "This is where we're different from anybody and everybody else in the world." He says, "There's other groups out there who speak in tongues and have the Holy Ghost. They have the power but they do not have the authority. >> He said authority comes only through the name of Jesus Christ and having been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. That is where you receive the vessel. This is where you receive the body and that's where authority is given. He says now we have authority. And so he goes on. And he says, "Somebody said when they come into the town," he he pastored for for decades and decades uh in the city of Alexandria. He said, "Somebody said when they come into this town, they don't feel the prince of the power of darkness in this town." He said, "You know why?" He said, "Through the name of Jesus Christ and through fasting and prayer, we take authority. We say I take authority and power through the name of Jesus over all the princes and powers of darkness of this area. And the God of heaven has bound the prince and the powers of darkness in this city. >> I feel the same way about miracle. He says you have the authority through the name of Jesus. You have the authority. Baptism in Jesus name gives the authority. The baptism of the Holy Ghost gives the power. The Holy Ghost gives the power, but the authority is in the name. Jesus said, "All power is given unto me in heaven and earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost." He is the Father. This is what the bishop said, the Son and the Holy Ghost. He said, "Therefore, go baptize in my name to receive the body to receive the authority." And he said, "When you baptize in Jesus' name, it gives you authority in your vessel. You have the power of the Holy Ghost with the authority over demons and devils, over oppression, over sin, and over everything else." He simply ended by saying, "I thank God I've been baptized in Jesus name." And I wish tonight at the end of this sermon if you could celebrate with me and say, "Thank God, I've been given a body. And thank God the body's been filled with the spirit of God. And I've been given a name above every other name. And that name gives me authority in my workplace. It gives me authority in my family. It gives me authority in my school. It gives me authority to walk in there and say, "Devil, you can't have this workplace." Uh Devil, you can't have this school. Devil, I take authority over you. Come on, somebody. Come on, let's just celebrate and worship him. I feel the Holy Ghost in this place. Uh if you've never been baptized in Jesus' name, I don't know of a better night than you can say, uh I want to be baptized. Uh I want that authority. I don't want to live another day without that authority. If you've never received the gift of the Holy Ghost, uh you got to have power to go with your authority. If there's no power, authority doesn't mean anything. And if there's no authority, power doesn't mean anything. Come on, somebody. If you're thankful, just lift up your hands and bless the name of Jesus in this househ. Oh, I think it'd be all right. We already have a lot in the altar. I think it'd be okay if the whole church would just gather in. Come on. If you've been baptized, uh, this is a time of celebration. I celebrate the fact uh that I repented of my sin and I turned from evil and I turned from this world. I celebrate the fact that you've changed my life. You you put my marriage back together. Some of you you took me off the bar stool. Others of you, you took drugs out of my system. You gave me back brain cells that I burned out with drugs and I'm so thankful for it. And because of it, you've changed my life. and not only changed my life, but you've given me authority to represent you everywhere that I go. Come on. I believe there should be some Holy Ghost language. Some holy language is uttered. If you've got the Holy Ghost, why don't you let that heavenly tongue, come on, let it come out your mouth. Open up your mouth and give him praise with a spiritual tongue. Come on. Do you feel that power? I feel the power. Come on. Do you feel the authority building up? I feel the authority building up. Come on. We're the church. We're the body of Christ. We're the hands and the feet. We got to take this gospel into this community and turn our world upside down in Jesus name. God. My God. My God. Pastor, come and end this like only you can end this. I don't know of a better Bible teacher on the oneness of God in the name of Jesus than Brother Carpenter. Come on. Come on. End this thing right here in Jesus name.
