Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Hunger's promise — Matthew 5:6
- His text is a single verse, Matthew 5:6, and his title is its last four words.
- The whole message is an argument that hunger, not fullness, is the blessed condition: Jesus did not pronounce blessing on the talented, the rich, or the ones who have arrived, but on those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.
- The promise attached is not to effort but to appetite — they shall be filled.
Scriptures: Matthew 5:6
Hunger, the engine of success
- Hunger is the engine of every kind of success: athletes train when others rest, and business people do what others will not.
- Spiritual growth belongs to men and women who refuse to coast on a past touch of God; a church or a believer satisfied with last week's blessing will stop reaching.
- He warns this congregation specifically that a large, blessed church can coast for decades on past revivals if its people let the pastor be the only hungry one.
ARFID — the lost appetite
- Against hunger he sets an eating disorder, restrictive ARFID, whose sufferers lose interest in food itself and sicken for want of nourishment they cannot make themselves want.
- It is a picture of believers who have lost all appetite for the things that keep the soul alive.
The vision of the platters
- The turning point is a vision from a late-night prayer meeting: a packed sanctuary, angels descending with platters of beautiful food — the miracles, healings, and restoration prepared for the people in the room.
- No one reached to take anything, because no one was hungry.
The marks of hunger
- Hunger has a voice and visible actions, it responds when God's presence is in the room, and it carves out room — time, capacity, a cleared life — to receive.
- Esau, who had everything and said he had enough, stands as the warning of a man full of the world and empty of God.
- The deathbed test exposes what will actually matter at the end.
The close — contentment refused as a sedative
- He refuses the misuse of Paul's contentment as a spiritual sedative, calling the church to thank God for every past revival while reaching for another.
- He opens the altars for those who have never received the Holy Ghost or been baptized, urging the hungry to pray with somebody and be filled.
- (Capture note: the packet seam cuts the closing appeal mid-sentence — 'That sounds' — and the extended altar prayer that follows stands outside the segment.)

And could you give the Lord one more hand clap of praise all over this house? Hallelujah. Come on. Why don't you do it all over this house right now? Front to back, side to side. Come on. Would you clap your hands? Would you close your eyes right now? Come on. I wish you'd get loose on a Sunday morning. Would you lift up your voice? Oh, hallelujah. Come on. He's worthy. Even if you don't feel like it today. Come on. Even in the mezzanine, he's worthy today. Why don't you clap your hands? Oh, hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
Boy, it is such a treat. It's such an honor to get to be in Little Rock on this Sunday morning. I'm humbled to be here. I appreciate your pastor and your pastor's family. Boy, you're so blessed, aren't you? Amen. Worldclass leadership that you get to experience every week is something that you ought to thank God for. I love you, brother Holmes, entire family. I appreciate them and I want God to help us today. What about you? Amen.
That youth service a few weeks ago, several of you young people made a commitment. And I remember a lot of the hands that went up. So, I'm going to be looking at you today. And if you aren't helping me, you ain't doing what you said you were going to do. But I appreciate y'all. So thankful to have my wife here with me. I love her.
The book of Matthew, chapter number five. Matthew chapter number five. I'm going to read one verse and let you be seated. So, you at least have to like me for not making you stand a long time this morning. Matthew chapter number five and verse number six. Man, the Bible says, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall," would you say, "shall?" They shall be filled. And I want to preach for just a little while on those four final words there. They shall be filled.
Would you lift up your hands with me one more time all over this house? Come on. Would you help me? Come on right now. I wish I could hear your voice raised on a Sunday morning. This is a praying church. Would you do it right now? Oh, hallelujah. Come on. Why don't you join up with somebody right where you're at? Would you do that for me on this morning? I love you, Jesus. We need your anointing today, God. Need your help in this house. Come on. Why don't you lift up your voice right now? If your neighbors not praying, you ought to shake them real quick. Hallelujah. Anoint us today. Help us today, God. Can't do it without you. Can't do it without your favor. Your hand. Hallelujah. Come on. Would you give the Lord one more hand clap of praise all over this house? Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Be seated this morning. Thank you for standing and helping me.
I think one thing I have discovered and I have found is that it's so important that no matter how good the service is, no matter how good the altar call is, no matter how good the revival is, no matter how good the blessing is, that when we go throughout our week and we go throughout our days and the days following, ing that we refuse to be satisfied with what we got and we continue reaching for more. I've had a lot of encounters with God. I've had a lot of times that God has helped me. God has ministered to me. I've had experiences in his presence. But I'm telling you that I come on this Sunday morning desiring God to do something in me unlike he's ever done before. It doesn't matter how good the services that I was in last week and how good the prayer meetings that I had in services last week. I want more of God this week than what I had last week. I want to encounter him in a deeper level tomorrow and the next day than I will today.
I believe that hunger is one of the most vital important components that you can have if you are going to be successful in your walk with God. Hunger is what drives people. Hunger is what gets people to do things that other people are not willing to do. Those that are successful in business and finance, they can testify that they did things other people were not willing to do. Those that are successful in sports, they were willing to train when everybody was taking a day off and they were willing to work when other people were not willing to put in the time. And I'm telling you that spiritual success is no different. Those that are successful in their relationships with God and those that are successful in their prayer life, those that are successful in building their churches. It's not men and women that got a touch and got a blessing and tried to see how long they could coast off of it and tried to see how long they could go off of it, but it was men and women that say, "No matter how good it was, I've got a desire to know him better than I ever have before."
As I look around this building today and all you wonderful people, I can't help but feel that that is one of the reasons that God loves your pastor and that God loves this church is that no matter how good the revival, no matter how many people pray through, no matter how many people get baptized, there's always something being done to try and get more people in the door and try to get more people feel. Do I got anybody that'll help me on this morning? I didn't come today cuz I've got everything together. I've come today cuz I don't have everything together. I didn't come on this Sunday morning cuz I don't need help. I've come today because I need the help of the Holy Ghost. Hallelujah. Praise God. If if you're in this building today and you don't have all the answers and you're here today and you've got problems in your life and you've got problems in your family and you've got problems going on in your world and you come hungry for God to fix them. I'm telling you according to the word of God, you are blessed. He did not say blessed are those that are fooled. Did not say blessed are those that are rich, blessed are those that are talented and perfect, but he said blessed are those that are hungry.
We think of somebody that has hunger. We immediately think of something that is lacking. It has a negative connotation in our world today. But I'm telling you, Jesus said, "If you come and you're hungry for more of me, then you are blessed."
There is an eating disorder that I've researched some and I've read about. It's called restrictive arfid. It's more commonly diagnosed in children but it can also occur in adults. And in many cases people that have arid simply have little to no interest in food. Now you can look at me on this Sunday morning and tell I was able to conquer that a long time ago. But the people that have this condition, they literally at times forget that they are supposed to eat. They're afraid of what might happen if they eat. They're afraid of choking, vomiting, all these different things that may happen. And because of this, they don't get enough protein. They don't get enough vitamins and minerals and all kinds of problems happen. They can get dizziness. They can faint. They can have osteoporosis. It can cause infertility in women. And in some extreme cases, it can even cause death. And the thought struck me that isn't it something that people have died from lack of interest in the very thing that is keeping them alive. They have lost interest in the very thing that is sustaining them, that is giving them strength, that is giving them the ability to make it through another day.
And as crazy as that sounds on this morning, I've come to preach to FPC about another disease, another condition that is finding its way into churches all over our country today. It is a condition today that I want to call spiritual arfid. It's finding its way into churches and it's finding its way into the hearts of men and women where they may not lose their hunger for food and for drink and the things of this world. But now they come to church and they don't care if people respond or if they don't respond. They don't care if people pray through or if they don't pray through. Come on. I've come to preach to somebody in this household. When you come here, it's not enough to be here in body. You've got to have your mind here today. You've got to have your spirit here today. You've got to have your soul involved in what God is doing. Hallelujah.
It's not that they don't come to church. They just don't come with expectation. It's not that they don't listen to preaching. It's just that they don't apply preaching. They don't allow it to change anything in them. I want to preach to you. If you're here today and you are content to leave how you came, that is exactly what's going to happen for you.
I found this out the last couple years. Boy, if I am content to live without revival, I'm going to live without revival. If I am content to come to church week after week and month after month and not get a breakthrough, that is exactly what's going to happen in my life. I found out that there was times that boy, I thought I wanted deliverance and I thought I wanted help, but I really didn't want it as bad as I was acting like I did. If you're here today and you need God to help you, you have got to put yourself in a posture and in a position where you can get help. It's hard for God to know that you want help when you sit like this all service long. You've got to open up yourself. I'm telling somebody on this Sunday morning, you're either going to have pride or you're going to have a miracle, but you cannot have both at the same time. You're either going to have breakthrough or you're going to have your pride, but you can't. There's got to be somebody that says, "I'm sick and tired of living how I'm living, of coming to church and going home and doing the same junk over and I need the help of the Holy Ghost." I'm telling you, somebody that feels that way, they don't care if nobody else is responding. They're going to respond. They don't care if nobody else is praying, they're going to pray.
I wonder if I've got anybody desperate in this house today. I wonder if I've got anybody needs a miracle. You're not going to get it just standing. You got to lift up your handshake, God, I don't care what they say. I don't care what they think. I need the help of the Holy Ghost. Come on, you ought to lift up your hands and love him in this house this morning. Come on, young people. I need you to help me. Come on. If you raised your hand, I need you to help me right now, young people. Come on. I wish somebody would pray in the Holy Ghost on this Sunday morning. Come on. I wish you'd step beyond the norm. I wish you'd step beyond your flesh and say, "I need a miracle, and I need it now."
It's such a simple revelation and the simplicity of it will allow it to go in one ear and out the other. And when I say this, some of you going to look at me cuz you've heard it a thousand times. But I do want to tell you again in Jesus Christ is everything that you need. Hey, that's simple, ain't it? Well, why do we keep trying to fill that void with everything else but a real relationship with God? You cannot satisfy that void. You cannot satisfy that longing. You cannot satisfy I want to preach to a visitor in this house that the world is going crazy and you don't know where to turn. You don't know what place you come this morning just trying another church out. I want to preach to you. You have found exactly what you are looking for today. I still believe maybe you don't, but I still believe that Jesus Christ is my answer. He is everything to me. I wish you testify. There's some ex drug addicts in this house today. There's some ex alcoholics. You ought to testify for somebody in this househ. I tried everything else. I went everywhere else. I turned here and but I didn't find what I needed until I turned to Jesus. Hey, let's love him around this house for just a moment. Is that okay? Come on. Would you lift up your hands for just a moment? Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Come on, everybody. Why don't you do it right now in this house in the name of Jesus? Praise God. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
There is nothing as rewarding as having a walk with God. Praise God. You can have everything this world has to offer, but if you don't know God, you're going to be as empty. Well, we're seeing so many people that are so obsessed with accumulating the things of this world and seeing what all we can get our hands on and seeing what all we can collect. And I know you want to have a career and you want to make money and there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm telling you, not at the expense of missing out on what you could have had if you would have given more of yourself to God. I'm preaching to you. I know we want to do things in this world. We want to I'm not preaching against that, but I'm telling you, not at the expense of missing out on seeing my family pray through. Not at the expense of not having the revival that God is wanting me to have. Come on. I'm telling somebody in this house, God is wanting to get your eyes off of what you see right now and get them on what really matters today.
We got so much attention being put on our physical wants to where we come to church and boy, we're like Esau and we've got money in the bank and we've got cars and we've got houses and Esau had everything that this world had to offer. But he did not have a walk with God. All that stuff had him so convinced that he was okay that he looked at his brother and he said, "I have enough. I've got everything that I want to preach to you. If you're in this house and you have 10 million in the bank, and you've got a house and you've got cars, but you're not filled with the Holy Ghost, I'm preaching to you, you don't have nothing today. You've got to realize, I'm going to seek him first. I'm going to seek him and his righteousness and everything else. Hallelujah. Only thing that's going to matter when it's all said and done is are we ready or are we not ready?
Boy, let me go ahead and just say this. When you're lying on your deathbed, I just about guarantee you you're not going to be thinking, "Boy, I'm so glad I picked up that extra shift every single week. Man, I'm glad I was able to buy that vehicle. Boy, here I am ready to meet I'm about to meet God. I'm so glad I was able to work that job. I'm so glad I was able to spend all that time. No, there's going to be one thing running through your head. Am I prepared for what I'm about to get into? Am I ready for what I'm about to get into? And I'm telling you, when you spend your whole life building your kingdom rather than God's kingdom, Hallelujah. Thank God our hope is not in this world. Cuz if it was, we would be in a mess, wouldn't we? I mean, if my joy was contingent upon what's going on in our world today, we wouldn't have no joy. But thank God, it's not based upon what this world has to offer. Hallelujah. Thank God for people that show up to church and that are hungry. Anybody come hungry on a Sunday morning?
Brother Holmes, I was at a church a couple years back and I'm not you will find this out if you don't know me. I want to be the most spiritual man you've ever been around. And I'm trying to get that way. But as far as just seeing like I don't have an angel wake me up every morning. I wish I had that, but I don't. Well, I guess my wife's an angel, but I don't just see visions 14 times a week and all this stuff. But I'm telling you that I was praying late one night. It was about 11:30. I was with one of my brothers and was up there at a church praying and I be to see some things in the Holy Ghost and I watched as there was a church building and it was slam full of people from front to back, side to side. And just like in this house today, there was so many needs that were there. And I watched as the singers began to sing and the service began to go on. I watched as angels began to descend down into that sanctuary. The beautiful thing was this. Those angels did not come empty-handed, but every one of them had a platter of food. And it was the most beautiful food that I had ever seen in my life. And I realized in that moment what it represented. It was the miracles for every person that come in that house that needed a miracle. It was blessing. It was hope. It was restoration. It was peace. It was joy. It was contentment. And I watched as them angels begin to walk up and down and back and forth and up and down the aisles and back and forth. And not one time did any saint of God or preacher stop one of those angels and reach up and get what they needed.
I started praying. I said, "God, talk to me. Talk to me." And I'm telling you, as sure as I'm standing before you today, I felt the Holy Ghost thunder in my spirit and simply say this. The reason they did not eat is because they were not hungry. I'm preaching to you, it does not matter how many miracles are in this house and that are at this altar and that are ready to be birthed into your life. It doesn't matter what all God wants to do for you if we don't create the space to receive what God is wanting to give us. I'm telling you, it will not happen. There's got to be some space that's carved out of your life. There's got to be some time that's carved out that says, "God, I'm not just saying that I want a blessing. I'm creating hunger. I'm creating room. I'm creating room in my life." Some of us, the reason God hasn't done in our lives what we want him to do is because we ain't got the room for them.
See, people that God wanted to do so many wonderful things, but they were so full of carnality and they were so full of desires of the things of this world and they were so obsessed with making another dollar that they did not have the capacity. They did not have the room to receive what God was wanting to give them. I wonder if I've got anybody at FPC on this morning that said, "I didn't come with my hands full. I didn't come with my life. I come today cuz I need God to help me."
You know the reality is this. I can tell those that are hungry and those that aren't hungry just by looking today. That's not a spiritual gift. I can see it with a carnal eye. It's easy to pick out those that are hungry and those that are not hungry. You know something? You know, said I wouldn't embarrass my wife all the money in the world probably. But in my two and a half years of being married, one thing I have discovered is this. If too many hours go by and it's getting around noon, it's getting around 1:00, there is going to be a spirit or something that gets on her that we call the hangry spirit. And some of you men can say amen. My God, just a few of us. But I realize, okay, she may say something she don't mean, but that's because she's hungry. And I appreciate that. I know all I got to do is give her some food and everything's going to be good. Because when she's hungry, you can tell she's hungry.
I'm preaching to you. It is no different in the spirit. I've had men that have come and they've talked and they said, "Look, man. My marriage is this. I need help. I'm addicted to this. I need help." And we'll talk and then service will be going on. They're in an atmosphere where they can be delivered. They can be set free. They can be healed. And there's people around just like today that's been running and shouting and lifting their hands. And the very ones that need a miracle. Don't tell me you want a miracle when you won't even lift up your hands when the spirit of God is here. Don't tell me you want God to put your marriage back together when you're in a place where it can happen, but you don't even lift up your hands. No. Why? Because hunger has a voice. Hunger's got a sound. Hunger's got some actions. And when somebody's hungry, they wave their hands. They open up. It doesn't matter what anybody else is doing. It don't matter if you're responding or not responding. They're going to respond. I wish I had somebody that would wave your hand at me right now in this house. Come on. I wish I had somebody that says, "I'm not satisfied. I want more than what I've ever had before." Come on. I want you to pray. Let's stop right here. I want you to pray. Come on. Would you lift up your hands? Would you open up your mouth in this house right? God, baptize us in hunger. Give us hunger today. I'm hungry for more. I'm hungry to see somebody filled. I'm hungry to see somebody baptized today. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
There's times in my life as a young man, I come to church and boy, I didn't care. I didn't care if it was Sunday morning and we're typically in a lower gear. That didn't matter. I didn't care if my friends didn't jump. My friends, when you're hungry enough, you don't care what anybody else is doing. When you're desperate enough for God to save your family, huh? When you're desperate enough for a miracle and for a change and for deliverance, it don't matter what anybody else. They could get up and sing, "Old McDonald had a farm." And you still ought to respond. Hunger. Hunger. Hunger is not silent. Hunger. Hunger is not mute. Hunger has got a voice. Don't tell me that you're just not an excitable person. Something gets you excited. Seen people that couldn't respond in church, but boy, you went out fishing with them and they'd holler and scream. Boy, they hit a hole in one on the golf course. And all of a sudden that person that well I just don't get excited very easy. It's just not in me. All of a sudden that person when that bass grabs a hold of that end of that line, boy, they get to screaming and shouting. I've seen people can't get excited in church, but you go to them with the latest gossip. Well, hallelujah. It's called hunger displacement. That means your hunger is in the wrong place. Every one of us this morning is hungry for something. We're just not all hungry for the same thing today.
How do we expect to be hungry for God when we consume garbage all day long? It don't matter what he wants to do in my life. If I'm not keeping myself right before God and I'm not creating the space and the environment for him to work, it will not happen. Bible says the fool soul, that's f u l soul loaith and honeycomb. The words of the Lord are compared to honey. It tells me that something even as sweet and as wonderful as the word of God, if you don't have the room for it, if you don't have the capacity for it, you will loathe the thing that is going to save your soul. Jesus said in one place, "My word had no place in you." I can't help but wonder how many blessings I have missed out on because I didn't have the room to receive it. Oh my god. How many of you come to this house needing a miracle and you're going to go home like you came because we didn't create the capacity? I've come to preach to somebody in this house that's willing to create some room in your heart. I know the full soul loaith the honeycomb, but I've got a promise that if you are hungry for the things of God, you shall be filled.
I want to preach to somebody today that you're looking at this world and you're seeing everything that's going on and it's scary and it's frightening. I'm telling somebody, as long as you stay in the church, everything is going to be all right. Let's pray in this house right now. Is that okay? Would you lift up your hands? Would you lift up your hands all over this house for just a moment? Hallelujah. Help us today, Jesus. Help us today, Jesus. Come on, why don't you help me pray? Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Come on, everybody. Why don't you lift up your voice right now in the name of Jesus? In the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus. Oh, praise God. Praise God. Praise God.
You know, the reality is your pastor can't be the only one that wants to take this church across the freeway. He can't be the only one that wants to see people get filled with the Holy Ghost. When saints that are hungry get behind a pastor with a vision, I'm telling you, anything can happen. Don't think cuz this is such a large church that you can sit back and it'll happen whether or not you do what you're supposed to do. I'm telling somebody. I know there's a lot of people around you and we've learned, well, if I don't worship, other people will worship. If I don't praise other I'm telling you what God is wanting to do in this final hour. What God is wanting to do in 2025, it will only be done for saints of God that join up with their preacher and say, "Pastor, you're not the only one hungry for it. I'm hungry for it. You're not the only one hungry for revival. I want revival. I want to see people pray. I wish I had some young people right now that would wave your head and say, "I'm getting behind the vision." My youth pastor ain't going to be the only one that pushes. I'm going to push. They're not going to be the only one that prays. I'm going to pray. Come on. Why don't you lift up your hands in this house right now? Come on. Right now. I wish everybody would help me. I wish everybody would help me in this house. Come on. I've come to preach to somebody. You've got to create the capacity to receive in your heart, to receive in your life what God is wanting to do for your church. Come on. I want you to join up with somebody right where you're at. Come on. Right where you're at. I want you to join up with somebody and open up your mouth. Come on. I'm asking you. I'm asking you. Don't you pray with your mouth shut. Come on. You need to open up your mouth and let your voice come out right now. Come on. I wonder what would happen if everybody would lift up their voice right now. I wonder what would happen if some of these young men in the youth group would lead this morning. I wonder what would happen if some of you young men would get your mouth open and pray in the Holy Ghost today. Come on, don't stop. Help me push this. I know it's Sunday morning. I wish you'd push with me today. Come on. I wish this is a praying church. This is a church built upon praying and the Holy Ghost. You ought to lift up your voice.
Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Woo. Oh, hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
I want to tell this church one of the greatest dangers with having a church like you've got and this building and all you people that assemble together. One of the greatest dangers that you can have is getting satisfied. Paul may have wrote and said, "I've learned in whatsoever state I am therewith to be content." I'm telling you, anybody that uses that in terms of spirituality has twisted scripture. He was talking about the I've learned how to be a based. I've learned how to be rich and be poor. I've learned how to sleep in nice houses. And I'm telling somebody, not in terms of spirituality. When you get comfortable coasting along, and my God, this church could do it for decades. You could coast along on what you've got and the revivals that you've had and the peoples that's prayed through and the singing that you have and the blessings and the music and the talent. You could coast along or I'm telling you, somebody could say, "It's been wonderful, but I refuse to be satisfied. I refuse. I refuse to be comfortable. I refuse to be complacent as much as he's done. I want more.
I'm asking this church, we're not forgetting about everything that has got us to this point. Not forgetting about all the revivals, all the sacrifices, all the prayers that have been prayed. We're never going to forget about it. You ought to shout about it. You ought to shout over what God has done for your church. But I'm preaching to you while you're shouting with your feet over what God has done. You ought to be reaching out with your hands and saying, "God, give me more." Thank God for every miracle, but I want another miracle. Thank God for every revival. Do I got anybody that'll help me on this morning? Do I got anybody this is resident? Don't just help me. I cuz you feel like it. I wish I could resonate with somebody today. Come on. I've come today to say thank God for everything that he's done, but I'm reaching out. I am not comfortable. I am not silish. Thank God for every revival, but do it again in my church. Thank God for every baptism, but do it again in my church. Thank God for every person filled, but do it one more time.
Come on. I want you to lift up your hands all over this house. Come on. I want you to put yourself in a posture. Put yourself in a position where you're ready to receive what God is wanting to do for you. Come on. All over this house. Come on. These altars are open. You ought to step out of your pew right now. Come on. You ought to step out of where you're at today. I wish you'd lift up your hands. I wish you'd open up your mouth. I'm going to receive something from you today, God. Ah, come on. I need you to open up your mouth, young people. I need you to open up your mouth today. Come on. I need you to show me you're hung. Don't just tell me you're hungry. Show me you're hungry.
