Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

A hard week, a called sermon, and the church’s hour

  • He thanks the Pastor for the invitation: on Wednesday night the pastor walked to him with purpose, and as soon as he turned away the direction hit him; his wife saw it and asked, so you got it?
  • His heart hurts for a world that is not getting any better, but this is the time for the church to be what it is supposed to be.
  • The struggle he names for the church and the world alike is fear: a couple of years ago everything stopped, and it was not so much the virus as the fear that gripped man’s heart.

Not a spirit of fear

  • He reads his text from second Timothy, the first chapter and verse 7: God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
  • Paul is telling Timothy to stir up the gifts inside him; the church has gifts lying unused, and needs to let God influence it rather than the world.
  • He has enjoyed this season of obedience away from social media and news, which only set his mind in motion and stirred a feeling that should not be there.
  • Fear is a spirit, and it is not of God or of the Holy Ghost; if it is not of God, it is of the adversary who fights against you.
  • Fear locks a person up until they cannot do what they are supposed to do.

Scriptures: 2 Timothy 1:7

Bondage or adoption

  • Paul put it this way in Romans 8 and 15: you have not received the spirit of bondage — and bondage is exactly what fear is — but the spirit of adoption; remember who you are, for you belong to God.
  • Israel saw themselves as grasshoppers and could not enter the promised land; Israel also stood afraid of Goliath until a little man named David, with a slingshot and pebbles in his hands, asked what they were afraid of.
  • When a person comes to understand who Jesus really is, they open their mouth and say: I will not be afraid.

Scriptures: Romans 8:15

Peter’s roller coaster

  • In Matthew the 16th chapter Jesus asks who men say he is; Peter answers that he is the Christ, and in verse 17 Jesus says flesh and blood has not revealed it — the Spirit has shown him — and upon this rock he will build his church.
  • In the book of Luke, the 22nd chapter, Jesus warns Simon that the devil would have him to sift him as wheat, and foretells the denying; Peter’s answer is arrogance — oh no, not me — before fear grips his heart.
  • As he tells it from Matthew the 14th chapter, Peter says “I’m going fishing” — going back to doing what he once did, back to what he was sure of; if the devil can derail you from your destiny and get you to withdraw, he will.
  • Yet this same Peter stood up on the day of Pentecost and preached repentance and baptism and the filling of the Holy Ghost; he finally got a grip and said, Satan, that’s enough.

Scriptures: Matthew 16; Matthew 16:17; Luke 22; Matthew 14

Rebuke fear, and reach for the harvest

  • Fear attacks every area of life — spiritual, physical, emotional — so plead the blood over your mind, your spirit, and the way you approach others.
  • He closes by having the congregation lift their hands: in the name of Jesus, rebuke the spirit of fear, and be prepared for the harvest God is preparing.

just for a few moments I want to say thank you to Pastor I Wednesday night I'm setting over here again trying to unwind oh you know our world's busy when he walked to me I knew he was walking with purpose he you know you you can almost read him he had something that he needed to say I will say this I will never question when he speaks like that I don't question it and at the moment I didn't really know what direction I was going as soon as he did an about face boom it hit me and my wife she knew it had hit me she said so you got it huh I said yeah I got it I want to start off by saying this I our world and my heart hurts for it but our world is not getting any better but there's something in my spirit says this is a time for the church to be what it's supposed to be it is supposed to be the church and it's time for us to be the church but one of the things that I think that we struggle with the most and I'm sharing my thought because I feel that brother Rob he's going to come in and slam duck it right behind me as well just just a little bit of time we we've talked I we didn't orchestrate this just fell like that and I I I know that God's hand is in it foreign but it's time for the church to be the church one of the things that we struggle with and our world struggle with today and that is fear a couple of years ago we had something happened in our world that literally turned our world upside down everything stopped everything comes to an halt everything turns foreign and I don't think it was so much the virus that we saw but it was the fear that gripped man's heart it was something that happened to us worldwide and I I want to talk to if I can adjust the church today and I and and I hope that you're setting here today and you've got your your your thinking process and gear because I really feel that this is something that God's laid on my heart but in second Timothy the first chapter in verse 7. scripture says here Paul writes to Timothy and he says for God hath not given us the spirit of fear but of Power of Love and of a sound mind Paul writes to Timothy in these passages and he is talking to Timothy and he says I need you to stir up the gifts that are inside of you I need you to to pay attention to what is inside of you those gifts that you have and I think it's very important that the church be aware that we've got gifts that are lying right here tonight or today you've got gifts in you that you need to allow God to use you need to allow God to to influence you a little bit and not so much the world I've enjoyed this time of being away from social media I'll be honest with you uh the fact that we we just do the obedient thing and we turn it off I I don't know I have not yet caught up on news I don't know but that's okay because you know what all it does is just set my mind in motion and and then all of a sudden I get this feeling inside of me that shouldn't be there we are to be about our father's business we're to be about the Church of the Living God and Paul was telling Timothy he says there is something that happens to individuals and that is that that's this spirit of fear fear is not just something that happened it is a spirit folks and it is not of God that if it's not of God then it has to be of what your adversary it has to be of the one that is fighting against you but that is not of the Holy Ghost fear is not of the Holy Ghost fear is that that makes you feel it takes your mind to a state that you cannot do anything you can't hardly do anything you're how many of you ever been afraid yeah you have you've been afraid to the point that you didn't know exactly what to do you get me and again if I get afraid I'm running I don't it doesn't matter y'all can catch me later that's that's just what happens I it just hits me um but but fear is that that that you're not able to do what you're supposed to do it's not what you it is that state of mind that says you know I I'm locked up I can't do what I need to do Paul put it this way in Romans 8 and 15. he said that that you're not of the spirit of bondage and that is exactly what fear is this the bondage of fear but you are of that of adoption remember who you are I want to remind us today that we belong to him we belong to God we belong to him and you are not to be under bondage bondage is that that it locks you down and makes you a slave it makes you to to doubt it makes you to run from things it makes you to to hold those those things and say I can't do this I am not allowed to do this I want you to understand this today I'm not talking from just some hypothetical I'm talking from experience I know what fear does it also will take you to that place that you're not to you're not able to fulfill what God wants you to do it will take you to a place that you will feel as the children of Israel we heard in our pre-service some a little bit about this but the children of Israel they saw themselves as what grasshoppers they were afraid they could not enter the the promised land they saw themselves as grasshopper you have Israel also standing at attention and standing afraid of Goliath but what happens to a little man named David that has a slingshot in his hands and he has those pebbles in his hands and he says what are y'all afraid of there is something that takes place in a in a person's heart when you when you come to a place of understanding who Jesus really is when you have that experience with who he really is you will open up your mouth and say I will not be afraid you see fear will try to shut them out it'll try to shut you down I I was looking just as a as just thoughts and I was looking through the life of Peter and I could not help but notice the roller coaster ride as it as it takes Peter threw some ups and downs and how that he would become afraid but yet he knew what he was supposed to be doing you see Peter had he had this he was supposed to carry this message on and he he would take this message and Jesus would ask him one day in Matthew the 16th chapter would ask him one day who who the men say that I am and gee and Peter says you're Christ the son of the Living God verse 17 of that Jesus answers him and says beloved Simon barjona Flesh and Blood had not revealed this this is not given to you by anybody but the spirit the spirit has come and it has shown you who I really am and he went through to say Upon This Rock upon what we are seeing right there is I will build my church and and Jesus was trying to get across to him but but I want you to be careful there now we find in the Book of Luke the 22nd chapter and I'm running through these very quickly we find that Jesus comes to Peter again and he says Peter or Simon he said the devil would have he would have you that he could sift you as wheat he's trying to get you and Peter said oh no not me God I I I'm going to be with you to the end I want to show you how this happens I want to show you how fear can grip your heart it's now Peter's like he's got the Lord's done questioning him so you know we get we get a little bit of arrogance in us and no no not me not me but then Jesus says just just hold on there's going to be some denying take place and there's going to be some things that you're going to you're really gonna show and then all of a sudden Peter realizes that he's in that shape and because of that you see if the devil can get you to a place to where he can hold you back from what you're really supposed to be doing if he can just put his brakes on just to put your brakes on just a little bit just to hold you back because Peter would be the man that stood up on the day of Pentecost and he would be the one that brought the message but he's taken Peter through this roller coaster ride and he's saying uh you can't do that we see prior today of Pentecost that Peter says you know what and that's found in Matthew the 14th chapter he says I'm going fishing he said I I'm going back to doing what I once did I am going back to doing what I am sure of and it's almost like his his plug had been pulled he he's giving up he's going back I I bring these thoughts to you today because I want you to understand it is the church's time to arise it is the church's time when you start feeling those resistance when you start feeling those fears come on you when you start feeling like that all of these things have just just drained you of your energy the things that are happening to us you see there would be questions that would come to Peter now what are you doing out there well why did you why did you do that why why why aren't you back you're supposed to be carrying the gospel out and the whole time the church I want you to see the picture that I'm painting today is is God has given us instructions he's given us Clarity on what our Destinies are but if he can derail you from your destiny he will do that if the devil can derail you from your destiny he will do that and if he could get you somehow to to withdraw or to pull back he's doing his best to do that and and you're not doing what you're supposed to do our job is out there folks our job is to be and I'm saying this from my heart because I feel this on me and I feel the burden on my myself today is we need to be doing things that we've been called to do we need to be doing things that he has called us and instructed us to do not don't go back to what you were doing don't go back to fishing Peter gather up your things and take up the net that you're supposed to be taking up and say where is the Harvest where is the field where is that that I'm supposed to be doing don't allow Satan to derail you today allow there to be a Pentecost that happens in your life because what happens is there's a day that he stood up and he says repent and be baptized there is a filling of the Holy Ghost he preached the gospel because yes he had those ups and downs but he finally got a grip and said you know what Satan that's enough you're not going to grip me with fear any longer I I hope that somehow today you will see that as fear is one of those enemies that you've got and it is a spirit all you've got to do in a spiritual attack like that say in the name of Jesus in the name of Jesus I rebuke that spirit of fear in the name of Jesus I know that you're there God I know that you're on my side for he has not given us a spirit of fear but of love of power and what of a sound mind fear will do its best to attack you and your spiritual physical emotional every area of your life will be attacked by fear every area will be attacked and we've got to plea the blood over every area God protect my mind protect my spirit God those the way that I approach others protect that Lord protect me God for ye are little children you're his you belong to him and greater is he that is what in you than he that is in the world how many of you today will accept what God has just spoken to us I know we're getting ready to hear the end of this but I want you to lift your hands with us right now and say God whatever it is I need to be prepared for what you have the Harvest that you have for me the Harvest that you're preparing for me God I have that in my hands God I'm reaching to you Lord Jesus Hallelujah let's lift our hands and love him Hallelujah Jesus you are worthy today Lord you are worthy of all honor and Glory praise God praise God praise God oh give thanks unto the Lord for he is worthy praise your Holy Name Lord
