Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The text: the bruised, set at liberty

  • Luke chapter 4, verses 14-20 read entire: Jesus returns in the power of the Spirit, and in the Nazareth synagogue is handed the book of the prophet Isaiah.
  • Isaiah 61:1-3 quoted across the exposition: 'the Spirit of the Lord God is upon me... to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives... beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.'
  • The sermon's hinge: Isaiah calls them 'bound', Jesus calls them 'bruised' — the Greek word means shattered, broken, smitten; both verses are about releasing the imprisoned.
  • We have become professionals at hiding bruises: masks of strength long before 2020 — 'it's okay to not be okay, but it is not okay to not be okay and act like you're okay.' The presence of God is a place for transparency, not pretending.

Scriptures: Luke 4:14-20; Isaiah 61:1-3

A high priest who can be touched with our feelings

  • 'We have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities or our weaknesses, but he was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin' — delivered entire and at length; the frame credits only 'the author', and the book is never named (the gate's closest call — see the gate note on this record).
  • How you see God is going to affect how you serve God: understand the kind of God you serve before the next verse.
  • 'Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may find help in our time of need' — we don't wrestle with knowing where our help comes from; we wrestle with admitting that we need it.

'Lord, help me' — and the Father who answers a child's cry

  • In Matthew chapter 15 a lady came worshiping with one phrase: 'Lord, help me.' Three verses later: 'O woman, great is thy faith' — it takes great faith to admit I need help.
  • Romans chapter 8, designated twice: 'we have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but we have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.'
  • Nobody moves a parent like a child: his own son Oliver, two years old and sick for the first time, is the illustration — if Oliver comes crying 'daddy, daddy, help me', the father's first response is 'what do you need?' That is the access a child of God has to the Father's emotions, and why the enemy works to silence your cry.

Scriptures: Matthew 15:28; Romans 8:15

Genesis 3: hiding from the only thing that could help

  • Adam and Eve had no precedent and nobody to model after, yet their natural response to failure was to hide — God calling 'Adam, where are you?' was not asking for directions.
  • Genesis 3:21 (cited as spoken, 'Genesis 3 211'): God didn't show up to kill them; he showed up with coats of skin — something was going to die, but it wasn't going to be them; a redemptive covering pointing to Calvary.
  • Condemnation pushes you away and isolates you; conviction pulls you toward God — and you can never embrace the covering while you are hiding in the fig leaves.

Scriptures: Genesis 3:21

The advocate, the Comforter, and the strong tower

  • First John chapter 2: 'I write unto you that you would not sin — but if for some reason you do mess up, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.' The goal is not to sin; the provision is for when you do.
  • Advocate is paracletus — the same word as John chapter 14 verse 26's Comforter, 'which is the Holy Ghost': the Spirit in you is the draw that sends you back to the advocate when you make a mistake.
  • 'All the way back in the book of Proverbs, he said the name of the Lord is a strong tower and you can run to it' — you don't have to be afraid; run to it.
  • Confession belongs with this movement too: 'if we confess our sins and our faults to him, he's ready to forgive us' — a verse whose designated reading comes at the close.

Scriptures: 1 John 2:1; John 14:26; Proverbs (book-only, as spoken)

Come back: the prodigal, and Bartimaeus who would not be quiet

  • The prodigal in Luke chapter 15 rehearsed a servant's speech — 'make me one of thy hired servants' — and the father didn't even acknowledge it: the best robe, the ring, the fatted calf; 'my son, not my servant.' As long as you've got a pulse, you can come back tonight.
  • Luke chapter 18 (as spoken): blind Bartimaeus had two issues — broke, which anybody could fix, and blind, which only a miracle could fix; he refused to act okay, and cried 'son of David, have mercy on me' while people with two good eyes told him to be quiet.
  • A student volunteer sits in for Bartimaeus — eyes closed, hands out — and cries out on cue; Jesus' question is the sermon's question: 'what do you want me to do for you?' waits on the honest answer — 'I'm blind.' Your faith can make you whole, but pretending cannot.

Scriptures: Luke 15; Luke 18

Jacob stops pretending: Genesis 27 to Genesis 32

  • 'Genesis chapter 28 — 27, excuse me': Jacob takes the blessing behind a facade — 'you sound like Jacob, but you feel like Esau'; you can't always go by what you feel, and deception is born where feeling outruns hearing.
  • Five chapters later, in Genesis 32, a man wrestles with him until daybreak; asked the same question his father asked — 'what is your name?' — Jacob for the first time answers truly: 'I'm Jacob. I'm a liar. I've got issues.'
  • On that profession God reveals the new identity: 'thy name shall no more be called Jacob, but Israel.' God will not bless who you're pretending to be; God blesses authenticity.

Scriptures: Genesis 27; Genesis 32

The close: confession is the first step

  • First John 1 and 9, designated and read at the close: to confess is to verbally declare — not to the person next to you, but to the one who has the remedy; 'he is faithful and righteous to forgive us.'
  • The first step of salvation itself is the admission — repentance, a turning: 'God, I need you, and if I don't have you I can't make it.'
  • The altar appeal runs on the whole sermon: 'he is our very present help' — somebody needs to run to him right now; Jesus is not afraid of your fears, your questions, or your secret addictions, but you'll never be set free if you don't acknowledge that you need help.

Scriptures: 1 John 1:9

Come on I wonder for just a moment every hand can just be lifted and we can tell him in our own way I love you Jesus because everybody in the room looked up your voice Come on every story is different But the common denominator is that we love him because he first loved us I wonder if every voice can be raised for just a moment Thank You Jesus you have been so faithful So what can we just respond right now to the presence of Lord God you have been good to us And we're just taking this moment on the Wednesday night to say thank you for loving us in spite of everything that we've done In spite of everything that we've been God we honor you. We love you Come on to the thing with the juice of a merciful gracious loving savior Amen, why don't you turn to someone close to you and say I'm so glad to see you tonight Come

on turn to somebody else and say you look amazing on this Wednesday evening. It is so good to be here If you have your Bibles with you Luke chapter 4 is where I'll be reading I Want to say it is such an honor For me to be here typically my family who is the best part of the Galloway household is with me There's a lot of amends on that part you guys must know my amazing wife and son, but I Am Saddened that they're not here My son was set to start potty training this week and so my wife felt the best that they stay back probably good for all parties there But he he actually came down with a sickness on Sunday first time he's been sick in a short two-year life He's never been to the doctor other than checkups. And so if you would just pray for him his name is Oliver He's the most amazing two-year-old in all the

world And I'm sure that you guys think that your Oliver is the most amazing two-year-old in all the world And so I do miss my family. I think they have a picture. I don't know if they could put it up They can it's fine But my wife summer and our son Oliver I give them so much honor Love my family Sorry, it's a little pixelated. I should have gotten the right dimensions, but nonetheless, that's my family I love them. I'm thankful for their prayers and I want to say it is so honored I am so honored to be here and I'm expecting God to do some great things this week Anybody in storm youth expecting this to be a life-changing week this week And I give honor to this church for believing in your students supporting your students I give honor to the lead pastor of this church all of the ministry I honor all of you And I want to give a

big shout out to brother Brendan and sister Veronica. Thank you for all of your hard work Come on, let's give it up for them. I Appreciate their leadership and their kindness. He has been first-class leading up to this event I appreciate all of the help that you provided me and I'm so thankful to be here Luke chapter 4 I also want to give honor to my pastor. I appreciate him allowed me to travel and minister tonight I am missing my home church, but I know that God is doing some great things there But I'm excited to be here. I believe God has spoken to me and I'm gonna do my best to convey What I feel like the Lord has directed me tonight I do want to also say it's so good to see some of my friends are UBCI youth manager executive team I love them appreciate the hard work. This is a big week Special prayers up for Friday morning 10

a.m. Central standard time I'm gonna be in the hotel praying and on my computer trying to get our tickets So I appreciate all the hard work that you do. I love these men and their wives are great great people great Christians And I'm thankful that they're the one leading our students Luke chapter 4 Leading up to this day I kind of wrestle with kind of the message for this first night and I had an early early morning this morning just going to the airport and so It was just a will of God to take a nap this afternoon And so I didn't want to be disobedient and so I took a nap this afternoon And when I woke up from the nap in prayer, I really felt like God just kind of gave me insight direction for this first night and Something the Lord just dropped in my spirit is that and this isn't just for students, but students I just want you

to get this that Everybody fails It's important that you understand that we all make mistakes and that's why we have need of a savior And I'm so thankful that his grace is sufficient But your life is largely going to be determined by your response to your failures So your future will Be determined largely by how you respond to your failures because when we fail when we fall short and make a mistake There are usually two responses that we feel sometimes we feel condemnation and then there'll be times we feel conviction And it's important to discern the difference between the two condemnation will push you While conviction will pull you closer to God Condemnation would bring feelings of shame and condemnation when conviction is going to bring you awareness And is going to show you where your help comes from and it's going to lead to repentance But I believe God wants you to know that you have to know where to turn to

When failure shows up you have to know where to turn to when valleys show up And I believe this is something that God has shown me I received the Holy Ghost when I was 19 and for the last 12 and a half almost 13 years and living for God Some things I've learned by way of teaching and some things I've learned by way of time And tonight I'm going to share a principle with you that I feel like time and teaching both have taught me That is that God is faithful I said God is faithful But the people in scripture the most notable people in scripture were successful Because they responded properly to failure and they learned that there was life after failure and they learned where to turn to Luke chapter 4 And verse number 14 I'm gonna read quickly and Jesus returned in the power of the spirit into Galilee and there went out of fame of him throughout all The

region around the bowed and he taught in their synagogues being glorified of all and the Bible says he came the Nazareth Where he had been brought up as his custom was and he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day And he stood up for to read and there was delivered unto him the book of these of the prophet He's eyes are Isaiah and when he turned or when he opened the book You found the place where it was written verse number 18 The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he had anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor He has sent me to heal the broken hearted to preach deliverance to the captives Recovering of sight to the blind and to set at liberty them that are bruised verse 19 to preach the acceptable year of the Lord Last verse and he closed the book gave it to the minister and sat down in the eyes of all of

them That were in a synagogue were fasted on him That day Jesus stood to read from Isaiah chapter 61 and I want to preach from this Thought from those scriptures the first step To help The first step the first step to help if you would lay your Bibles down and let's pray together The worship team has done such an amazing job leading us into his presence I wonder right now if we could just lift up our voice and pray that God would have his perfect way that we would be sensitive to his Spirit Jesus, I thank you for the opportunity to be in your presence with your people God I thank you for the opportunity to minister to this church Specifically this youth group God and I'm asking you to let your spirit move and minister to these students tonight in such a powerful way God I pray that tonight would mark us that we would never be the same after leaving from

your presence tonight Let the word of God find good ground the soul of our heart God and let it bear fruit I come against every distraction anything that would try to oppose what you're wanting to do I bind that now in the name of Jesus Christ and I pray that the Holy Ghost would speak to us tonight Let us have ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to the church and everybody shout in Jesus name If you're excited to be in the house of the Lord one more time, can we just clap our hands? Turn to somebody beside you get behind five and say I'm glad that you came tonight. You may be seated When Jesus stood in Luke chapter 4 and The synagogue and he chose to read the Bible says that they handed him the book of the prophet Isaiah and he quotes Isaiah 61 and one where the Bible says that the spirit of the Lord God is upon

me because he had the knowing me to preach Good tidings to the meek. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of prison to them That are bound. He said I've come to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord In the day of vengeance of our God to comfort all that mourn and I think well that God is still doing this To point out to them that morning Zion to give them beauty for ashes and the oil of joy for morning Aren't you thankful that God will give us garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness? That they may be called the trees of righteousness at the planning of the Lord that he may be glorified when Jesus stood in Luke chapter 4 and he began to quote the words of Isaiah 61 He wasn't simply quoting this verse He was the actual fulfillment of the words of the prophet Isaiah But there

is a slight difference between Isaiah 61 and Luke chapter 4 And Isaiah 61 the Bible says that he would open the prison to them that are bound But in Luke chapter 4 the Bible says through the mouth of Jesus that he has come to set at liberty them That are bruised Both verses deal with the releasing of the imprison, but Isaiah chose to call it bound, but Jesus called it bruised I don't believe that Jesus was misquoting because he was the fulfillment of the scripture But I believe there's insight to what Jesus is saying that both in his day and both in our day people are bound by a bruise The Greek word for bruise is throughout which literally means to be shattered to be broken or to be smitten And no matter who you are in this life all of us at some point have become familiar with being broken We have become familiar with being bruised there life has a way

of impacting all of us and hurting all of us I wish you were not the case But such is the case that at the longer that you live for God and the longer that you're on this planet You're going to learn that sometimes life just isn't good But the issue is most of the time that we don't like to admit when things bruise us We we don't like to admit when we're broken We don't like to admit when we're hurting so we have become professionals at hiding the bruises When you are bruised physically the blood doesn't flow properly when you are bruised spiritually the blood doesn't flow properly When you are bruised if you're not careful you can get bitter we can get jaded our perspective can get skewed And there are people in this room there are students and adults alike in this room that life has bruised you life has hurt You people have hurt you a family member may have

hurt you your mistakes may have hurt you Your addictions may have hurt you your struggles of choices may have hurt you But no one can tell because we've become very good at just hiding it It's beneath the surface we could come to church and act like everything is okay when really everything is not okay 2020 when the pandemic started our world everybody began to wear masks But what I know is that people have been wearing masks much longer than 2020 is just you can't see them We have mastered the idea of putting on the masks of strength when we know that we are weak the mask of I'm okay When really on the inside we're crumbling when somebody asked how are you doing? Everything's great when everything's not great Can somebody just be transparent for a moment and identify with the preacher that you've done that before You know and you could barely sleep last night, but when you come to church, how

you doing? Oh, I'm anointed and appointed this is my season God is doing something and you're not so sure if God's doing anything We're bruised We're broken and there's been this cliche statements Circling around the world the last few years that it's okay to not be okay But I want to add something to that that it is okay students and adults alike It is okay to not be okay, but it is not okay to not be okay, but act like you're okay I want you to know the presence of God and the church of God is not a place for pretending This is a place where you can be transparent. This is a place where you can be vulnerable This is a place where you can be real This is a place where you don't have to be afraid to reveal to God your real struggles and your real issues I want you to know students the best place for your fear is

the presence of God the best place for your worries It's the presence of God. You don't serve a God that will run from you. He wants to help you He receptor for puts it like this for we have not a high priest Which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities or our weaknesses But he was in all points tempted as we are yet without sin The reason that the author wrote this is because you have to understand this before you get to the next verse because how You see God is going to affect how you serve God It's important that you have the right perspective, so he wants you to understand the kind of God that you serve Why is it so important that you understand that you don't serve a high priest? Which cannot be touched with the feelings of your infirmities and in other words you serve a God that can be touched with the feelings of your infirmities,

why is that so important? Because the next verse says this let us therefore Come boldly to the throne of grace that we may know where we could find help and our time of need How we see God affects how we serve God, so when you understand the kind of God that you serve You're not afraid to run to his presence and say I need you. I need you. I'm struggling and I need you You must understand the God that you serve He loves you and he cares about you and he wants you to come with all of your baggage with all of your problems I'm thankful that we can find help and hope in the presence of Jesus Christ But I don't believe that we wrestle With knowing where our help comes from I Believe we wrestle with admitting That we actually need help. I'm not here tonight. This thing is sad song I believe that living for Jesus Christ is the best

life in the most blessed life that there is I'm thankful that for the last 12 and a half years that I've been spirit field and baptized in Jesus name But here's what I do know that sometimes there are going to be valleys and sometimes there are going to be dark days And sometimes things are gonna hurt us and things are going to break us in the reason I felt so pressed in my spirit to persist to you tonight is I want you to know Where you should run when those emotions come where you should run when those bad days come You don't have to run the drugs. You don't have to run to the world You don't have to run the culture. You can run to Jesus Christ. You can run to his presence You can run to an altar and say Jesus. I need help There's a lady in Matthew chapter 15 The Bible says that she came in worshiped him, but

her worship was accompanied with this phrase Lord help me I want you to know that sometimes even as a worshipper you're gonna have to admit I need help three verses later the Bible says that Jesus looked at her and said old woman great It's your faith. It takes great faith to admit. I need help. I Don't have it all together. I don't have all the answers That's why we're here tonight because we don't have it all together Because we do need God because we do need help because we do need a savior But the first step to help she's gonna give it away in the beginning Is admitting that you need it There's nothing more the enemy would want Then to suppress your prayers and silence your praise and to believe it that you have to be quiet Because you'd rather sit there in your tomb turmoil and your pain than to let your neighbor know what's going on It would be best

for you to sit on your issues and not really make a scene because you don't want anybody to know What's going on, but I'm telling you the reason he tries to silence you as he knows The moment that you cry out for help. It's just the kind of God we serve. He's gonna respond There's something about God. He is drawn to the cry of his children That's what Romans chapter 8 said for we have not received the spirit of bondage again up to fear But we everybody say that's us. We have received the spirit of adoption whereby we can cry Abba father, I want you to know he's not just Lord and Savior. He is your father and you can cry And here's what I've learned nobody Nobody has access to the emotions of a parent like a child Nobody can move a parent like a child I Told you in the opening text or the opening part of my Remarks that my

son is the first time he's ever been sick and I love him and he's my world I'm I love being a father my my biological father wasn't involved in my life So when I got in the church and I got the Holy Ghost I just dreamed of the day that I could be a father brother Tim and I just I love being a father and I could tell you this if If Oliver comes running on the hallway crying daddy daddy help me. I can tell you what my first response is not Leave me alone You should have this figured out you're two years old Here's my first response. What do you need? Why because of our relationship? He has certain access to my emotions that nobody else has and so Paul told us in Romans chapter 8 We did not receive the spirit of bondage to get up to fear. You are not a slave You are not a slave. No, no, no,

he said but we have received the spirit of adoption Whereby we can cry when you're a child It gives you access to a certain cry that everybody else doesn't have but you have access to the emotions of our father Which means when you cry he responds That's why the enemy wants to silence you That's why the enemy wants to suppress you if you're here tonight with pain in your mind if you're here tonight in life That's not okay. I want you to know you're in the right place with the right God. He's not afraid of your fears He's not afraid of your insecurity. God is not afraid of your anxiety. He's not afraid of your questions I'm telling you you can bring it all to the presence of God But the first step to help is admitting That you actually need it see when you go back to the beginning of the scripture Adam and Eve there was no precedent Adam and Eve

had no precedent Nobody to model after But the first two humans their response to sin was to hide So when the Bible says God came walking through the garden in the cool of the day The Bible says that God calls out to Adam Adam. Where are you now? God was on asking this question because he needed directions God knew exactly where Adam was but Adam and Eve give us insight to the original natural response to fail to hide They didn't learn that from anybody. They had no precedent to see but it's our natural human inclination When we make a mistake to hide so what God comes in the garden He asked the questions Adam where are you and he says I hit myself because I was naked and then this dog law begins to unfold But here was the premise here was the issue Adam and Eve were hiding from the only thing that could help them The worst thing to do in

the presence of God is to hide. I Want you to know you can be transparent in the presence of God I don't know who I'm preachers on this first night But I believe this is gonna set the atmosphere for the rest of the week This is not a place where we come in masquerade. This is not a place where we come and pretend This is a place where we can be formidable. This is a place where we can be real This is a place where you can just let God in and let him know what you're really going through I've learned that there's no problem too great for him. There's no situation too great for him Has anybody learned when you bring it to him? He always has an answer. Come on. His grace is sufficient He's not afraid of it. I wonder if we could lift our hands all over the room right now and just admit God. I need you I

need you. I need you Adam and Eve thought They thought They were hiding because they thought they were gonna die But what they didn't know that Genesis 3 211 tells us God didn't show up to kill him. He showed up with coats of skin Even though they sin Something was gonna die, but it wasn't gonna be them pointing to what would happen at Calvary that there was a redemptive covering for their sin But they could never embrace the covering while hiding in the fig leaves It took a moment of transparency to put the fig leaves down to put their human efforts down and Get it get it get a fresh understanding. They had to understand. I don't need to hide from the only thing that could help me That's what condemnation does it tries to push you [name redacted] when you make a mistake And it's gonna happen when you make a mistake what condemnation is gonna do is push you just just isolate

yourself Don't go to you sirs And if you do go put on your best suit because you don't want anybody to know what you're going through and you'll sit there And you're saying because the enemy knows if you ever come out of the fig leaves There's a redemptive covering for you and God did not come to kill them He came to restore them and to redeem them. You don't have to be afraid Somebody's got to understand the kind of God that you serve the Bible says it like this if we confess our sins and our faults to him He's ready to forgive us First John chapter 2 the Bible starts it out like this. He said no he he makes it clear He said I'm not telling you this so you would live a sinful life. He said I write to you that you would not sin but For some reason you do make a mistake If for some reason you do mess

up now the goal is to not sin to try to be as much like Christ as we can and I'm not up You're preaching permission this so you to do whatever you will know We should not sin that that would make the grace of God in vain and Paul said God forbid But the writer of John he says now I write to you that you don't sin But if you do It's important that you understand We have an advocate with a father Jesus Christ the righteous Now the goal is not to sin, but young place if you do You got to know the kind of God you serve. He's an advocate. That's the Greek word paracletus It's also found in John chapter 14 verse number 26 But the comfort of when he shall come which is the Holy Ghost God's spirit in you It is the comforter it is his spirit in you, but it's to bring you comfort that when you do

make a mistake You know where to go you can run to the advocate you could run to the advocate It's a draw you that when I make a mistake. Oh, no, this is not the time to throw in the towel This is not the time to throw it all away. No when I make a mistake There's something about the spirit in me that says it's time to go to the advocate It's time to go lead me to the rock. That's higher than I That's why all the way back in the book of Proverbs. He said the name of the Lord It's a strong tower and you can run to it. You don't have to be afraid run to it Even that prodigal son in Luke chapter 15 Even he knew when he was tired of the pig pin when he was tired of everything going on He says, you know what it was better in my father's house So the Bible says he

makes up his mind to go back and while he was still a great distance off The father ran to him and embraced him And you can see the language of condemnation when he said I am no more worthy to be called a son make me one of the hard servants Because your mistakes will convince you that you have to settle for less But if you're a son or a daughter you're a son and a daughter and so, you know the father did Sister need to he didn't even acknowledge that remark. He said hey I want you to bring the best robe Put the ring on his finger. He said kill the fatty calf My son Which was dead is now alive Not my servant not one of my heart service. No my son Even that prodigal son thought because of my mistakes. I got a set of the less But when you get the understanding of where you can run to you can

run back to the Bob telling somebody you can come back tonight You can come back tonight. There's room for you here. There's room for you here It's not too late as long as you got a pulse and your heart is beating you can get help tonight. I Said Jesus can help addiction Jesus can help alcohol Jesus can help suicide Jesus can help fear Jesus can help anxiety Jesus can help you, but you've got a man I need help. I need help. I need help. I need help. I'm struggling. I need help Come on somebody lift up your voice right now and just say I need help He love also told her about how you come on lift up your voice Come on. That's it. Come on. It's starting to peel right now. I need help God. I need help in my mind God, I'm wrestling. God. I'm struggling. God. I'm afraid. I believe it's so simple But sometimes we miss it one cry

One cry for help. It gets his attention And Luke chapter 18 when Bartimaeus is sitting on the side of the road begging come here [name redacted] When you just sit right here close your eyes and hold your hands out you're blind Bartimaeus He's sitting on side of the road Jesus here's that Jesus is coming by So you know what he does he responds Because Jesus is close And he says That son of David have mercy on me now this man Bartimaeus He's got two issues Bible says that he was broke. He was asking for a homes and if you've ever been in a place where You don't have any money. You know, this is a real issue It's a depressing issue to not have money You know when you don't have money everything just breaks Your car that was running great because you don't have money it just breaks Everything gets on your nerves when you're broke. It's a struggle being broke. See you

guys don't anything about that because Right now everything's free You're gonna learn You're gonna learn how expensive laundry detergent is If you're real fancy you get the pod you better have a second job Where I live they started putting those things behind locks. You're gonna learn how expensive soap is and all this minimal stuff So Bartimaeus close your eyes Blind He's broke and he's blind And Jesus is walking by And Bartimaeus has a choice to meet I Can sit here and act like I'm okay all I want But if I do I'll miss the miracle he could have sat there and acted like everything was okay But he just stayed exactly like he was But there was something in Bartimaeus that he said I've got to respond to being in the presence of Jesus So he cries out Jesus now son of David Have mercy on me try that out. Jesus now son of David have mercy on me. That's a good Bartimaeus

Say it again [name redacted]. And you know what everybody around him said, but I want you to think about this the people That were telling him to be quiet had two good eyeballs They didn't need a miracle It's easy to critisize somebody. That's blind when your eyes weren't great But you got to make up your mind. I don't care what everybody else says Jesus is here. So I've got to cry Jesus Jesus Jesus I Was somebody will throw your hands up and forget about your neighbor and say Jesus Mean something because it got the attention of Jesus. I Don't care how foolish it is if it gets his attention I don't care what my neighbor think you know why because they're not your healer They can't help you but Jesus can I'm doing this for him But then Jesus Or the man's comes to Jesus in Jesus Being God manifested in flesh as Bartimaeus a question a pretty Pretty befuddling question Bartimaeus What do

you want me to do for you? It's kind of obvious But I believe Jesus was leading us up to Bartimaeus Because he did have two issues. He was broken. That's an issue, but he was also blind But here was the thing about his first issue Anybody could have came by Dropped a cup a hundred in the cup and that issue would have been resolved But he had one issue that only a miracle could take care of that only Jesus could take her So Jesus was leaving the ball and Bartimaeus his court What do you want me to do for you Bartimaeus could have been self-righteous and acted like he wasn't blind But he knew if I don't be real with God I've got to miss my miracle. So he said Jesus. I'm blind Jesus said that's what I'm waiting for now your faith is gonna make you whole You got to have enough faith to admit it. I'm blind. You got to have

enough faith to admit it. Thank you I'm struggling. You got to have enough faith to admit it that you're weary Because pretending and masquerading and putting on a show is not gonna make it I'm all of a sudden the music had come. I want to be done prison before you're done listening Genesis chapter 28 27 excuse me. There's a man by the name of Jacob His mother Overhears his father telling his brother East Hall that he's at the point of death. He's going to bless him Now he's already the seed this way until the birth right now Jacob hears from his mother your father is going to bless He saw He saw goes out to get the finishing to prepare his father's last meal Rebecca hears about it She tells Jacob go get some goat. I can prepare in such a way That your father will never know Jacob said there's one caveat. There's one issue East Hall is a hairy man, and

I am a smooth man He says when I go in there though my father's eyes be dim when he reaches out to touch me He's gonna realize that I'm Jacob and not East Hall So here's what Jacob did the Bible says he got these coats and he put them on So he goes in Behind this facade of Somebody he wasn't and it's got this mass. He's got this these coats of skin on this fur And he goes in his father they began to talk This father asking this question. What's your name and Jacob says Well, my name is he saw pretending to be something he's not And so his father reaches out to touch him and he said I'm a little confused because You sound like Jacob But you feel You feel like he saw Proving to us hear me That you can't always go by What you feel if you go by what you feel over what you hear that is a

birthplace of deception You got to go about what you're hearing And so I said no, I'm East Hall So the Bible says he gets the blessing and Jacob who's been a deceiver a supplanter Person that one ups everybody his entire life Seems to be getting away with it until five chapters later and Genesis 32 the Bible says They're wrestled with him a man. He was left alone. I Don't know exactly what it was. You have to find somebody smarter than me to give you the full explanation We know it wasn't a normal man But the Bible said they were wrestling until the day breaks And he said let me go for the daybreak And here's Jacob again Looking for a blessing for the Brendan and so he says this I will not let you go Until you bless me and something So familiar comes out of this man's mouth. He asked Jacob this what? Same question five chapters earlier his dad asked him

But this time Jacob knows This is not an earthly encounter This is a supernatural encounter And so my pretending isn't gonna work anymore And so Jacob looks back and says and for the first time in his life He's being transparent about who he really is now when he is telling him his name He is not just giving him a name. He is revealing to him as character He is revealing to him as issues because his entire life this man has been a deceiver But we learn in Genesis 32 how God responds to transparency Because the Bible says upon that profession when he says I'm Jacob. I'm tired of hiding it. I'm not he saw I'm not who I'm pretending to be I'm Jacob. I'm a liar. I've got issues. I've got struggle That man look back out of him and said My name no more be called Jacob But Israel And here's the revelation when Jacob was willing to reveal his true identity

God was willing to reveal his new identity, but it did not start until Jacob was real with God God is not gonna bless who you're pretending to be God blesses authenticity. God blesses vulnerability. God blesses the real you And here's what I want to tell you students that God will be transformational If you're willing to be transparent The first step to help is admitting that you need it Hear me. Jesus is not afraid of your fears Jesus not afraid of your questions Jesus is not afraid of your doubts Jesus is not afraid of your secret addictions, but you'll never get set free if you don't acknowledge that you really need help. I Want us to all stand to our feet. I want us to lift our hands all over the room And I want us to just go ahead and prepare the atmosphere of God. I need help. I Need help. I need help. Here's how this works. Here's how this works I

hadn't thought about the scripture in months until this evening in prayer God brought it to my mirror First John 1 and 9 Sometimes I feel like we can just get right over it The Bible says this is first John 1 not if we confess our sins To confess I looked it up in the Greek you you have to verbally declare it now That that isn't to say you need to confess to the person next to you You don't need to confess it to me You need to confess it to the one that can help you You need to confess it to the one that has the remedy You need to confess it to the one that has the answer, but you got to take solace in the fact that if you will come back He is faithful, I don't know why but he is I can't really explain it But all I know is anytime I've ran and fallen at his feet. He's

never kicked me But I was down every time he would reach down because he is faithful and righteous to forgive us Telling somebody more than you want to be right God wants you to be right More than you want to be whole God wants you to be whole He wants to forgive you. He wants to help you. That's why The first step in salvation is you got to repent There's got to be this admission and do this on my own There's got to be this turning away There's got to be this god. I need you and if I don't have you I can't make it There's got to be a repentance. There's got to be an admission Jesus, I need you I've wondered if we can do that all over this room Every student every adult every elder god We need you tonight I'm pleading with somebody right now if you come tonight with an e Don't leave The same way that you

came there's a god that wants to help you There's a god that wants to help you Father in the name of jesus, I pray Let our faith be stirred tonight god that we can come to you We can come to you god. We don't have to be afraid We don't have to be timid god But we can come to you jesus we can bring our issues to you god. We can bring our failures to you Somebody hear me jesus is reaching for you jesus is reaching for you The hand of god is reaching down All he needs is somebody to reach back All he needs somebody to admit I've been struggling I've been hurting I've been bitter I've been angry my spirit's been off My thoughts have been all nobody knows it, but jesus I need help I'm telling you he is our very present help Somebody needs to run to him right now Somebody needs to run to him right now There's

no only answer, but jesus is the answer Jesus is the answer If during this room and you need help I want you to step out of your seat If you're able make your way down to the front Throw your hands in the air Come on. We're not pretending tonight. We're not just going through church emotions. Jesus. I need you Jesus I need you
