Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The first family: loss, blame, and the argument over worship (Genesis 4:25)

  • Adam and Eve raised their boys to be religious: Cain a tiller of the ground, Abel a keeper of sheep; Abel's offering of a lamb was smiled upon, Cain's offering of his produce was not, and anger turned to violence — one boy dead, one boy judged to wander.
  • The first argument was about worship, and thousands of years later that argument still has residence in our spirits: you cannot worship God how you feel — you have to worship God like the Word dictates.
  • Eve lost two sons, one to violence and one to wickedness, and her promised deliverance seemed gone: who's going to bruise the head now?
  • But the twenty-fifth verse brings hope: Adam knew his wife again, and she bore Seth — God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew — the appointment you have is greater than your disappointment.

Scriptures: Genesis 4:25

Chapter 5: this is the book (Genesis 5:1-4)

  • Chapter 4 is all disappointment, failure, shame, anger and murder — but the next chapter begins, 'This is the book of the generations of Adam': God starts the history of the first man and woman at the new beginning.
  • Adam lived an hundred and thirty years and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image, and called his name Seth — and the preacher asks after the rest of those years: God has closed the book on some of the things you are still worried about; they are not in His book.
  • After Seth, Adam's days were eight hundred years, and he begat sons and daughters: Eve kept doing what she knew to do to bring about God's promise — she would not stop until her answer arrived.

Scriptures: Genesis 5:1-4

It's not over: believe again

  • Things did not turn out the way you thought — in your business, your marriage, your children, your money — but God isn't finished working in your life; it's not over, and it's not finished.
  • Pain and a sense of failure silence worship because they close the door on relationship; the Spirit is in the room wooing someone back to a reunion of faith — worship again, believe again, pray again, hope again.
  • To have Seth you have to be willing to be intimate again: keep believing, keep coming to the altar, keep having the prayer of faith — just keep believing.

Scripture index: Genesis 4:25; Genesis 5:1-4.

And the Word said Adam knew his wife and she bare a son. There is a little bit of a theological dispute that Adam and Eve bare twins, Cain and Abel. It doesn't matter if they're twins for the thought process of our sermon today One perhaps elder and one younger. But one is a keeper of the sheep, and one is a tiller of the ground. Can you imagine what it must have been like when she's expecting? I mean who do you talk to when no one has ever been pregnant? I mean can you imagine how she got up one morning and leaned over to Adam and said I don't feel well. And Adam said, well if you hadn't of taken of that tree We were never sick before this. You think it was any different than us? And then the second day she's still sick. He is morose and brooding and heads out to till the ground and break that hard soil where now thorns are in abundance and pestilence range and the mosquitoes and the bees are upon him. And he's a little frustrated. And she's sick again the next day. And three days become three weeks. Three weeks become six, and she's still ill. His patience is wearing thin, and then she asks that question that no man should ever be asked. Do I look fat? Now what do you do? You tell the truth, you're in trouble with God or with your wife. You lie, you're in trouble with God. What do you do? But weeks become months. And months become moments. And moments become a birth. And she knows. This is it. I'm going to win. I've got a boy. My man child. It's here. Things are going to change. And they raised them to be religious. They raised them to do the will and purpose of God. The keeper of the ground, Cain. The keeper of sheep, Abel. They raised them to know how to do them. They day comes when they are at their spiritual maturity, and they offer sacrifices on their own. Abel comes with a lamb, of spotless quality, the best he has and the lays it upon the altar, and God smiles upon it as he splits it from the breastbone to the pubic bone and drains the blood out just as his father taught him. The blood covering sins and he lays that sacrifice upon the altar and here comes his brother Cain. He's worked hard. He's slaved against pestilence and plague. He's broken that unfertile ground and made it fertile. And he brings his offering of vegetables, the pride of his effort, and yet God's smile doesn't come. No favor falls upon his sacrifice And he gets angry for his brother received the blessing of God but not he. And that anger turns to violence, and that violence leaves one boy dead and one boy judged to wander as a vagabond cast from the presence of God. Isn't it amazing, the first argument is about worship? And isn't it amazing, we're still arguing about worship? I don't like those songs. I don't like it loud. I don't it fast. I like the old things. I don't like contemporary. I don't like southern gospel. I don't like that kind. I don't think we should raise our hands. I don't want to clap. I don't want to be emotional. Isn't it amazing that thousands of years later that first argument still has residence within our spirits. How to worship. Why don't we stop giving God what we think's appropriate and why don't we go to the Word and give God what God asks for? You can't just worship God how you feel to worship. You have to worship God like the Word dictates. You have to make sure that you enter into His gaits with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. You have to cry and sing aloud on your beds. You have to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. This is the day the Lord hath made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. Jealousy exists in the lives of people who believe their future to be over. And that's what motivates Cain to take Abel's life. Her plans have imploded. Her hope is gone. It requires very little intellect to attack your brother. And there are only two results when brothers fight. Death and isolation. And now Eve she's lost two sons. One to violence and one to wickedness. And Cain is wandering outside the favor of God. Who's going to bruise the head now? Who's going to bring her prophecy to past now? Where is her deliverance? Where is her last laugh? It hasn't turned out the way she thought. She doesn't know what to do, but I'll say it again It's not over. It's not finished. Things didn't turn out in your business the way you thought they would. But I want you to hear this preacher clearly. It's not finished. I came to serve a Holy Ghost notice on every person in this house. It's not over. Things are not turning out the way you believe they would. Oh, but God isn't finished working in your life. You thought you'd be married already, but it's not over. You thought your marriage would've had a turn for the better. It's not over. You thought your kids would've accepted and been baptized by now. It's not finished. You thought your money would've made a turn. You've been faithful to the house of God. It's not over. Can you imagine the conflict that exists when one child is murdered by another child? Can you imagine the chaos within Adam and Eve emotionally? The fingers of blame, the insinuation, the frustration the depression, the despair. We don't have problems. We have the luxury of being spoiled. The roof is leaking. My shoes are too tight. My suit doesn't fit right. The car is not running right. It's real trouble when one son murders another son. And you feel the sting of your own parental failure. That's why pain in a church will silence worship. Because when you have pain in your own spirit and feel failure, it's hard to break into your life with intimacy because we close the door on relationship. But Genesis 4 and 25 is a scripture that brings such hope. I need you to put it up on the board. Genesis 4 and verse 25 says this You ready? Watch. And Adam knew his wife again; There are people in this house the same way that Adam was trying to woo his wife into intimacy The Holy Ghost is in this room trying to woo some of you into a reunion of faith and hope and belief. The Spirit is in this room speaking to someone in this house telling you it's not over. It's not finished. Worship again. Believe again. Pray again. Hope again. The same way Adam was trying to seduce his wife. The Spirit of God is trying to seduce someone's faith and say it's not finished. I'm not done. Don't give up now. Don't get derailed, distracted, or confused. Don't allow the disillusionment to frustrate your faith. I'm not finished. God's not going to stop. God doesn't give up easily. You've got to be willing to believe again. To worship again. Let go of Abel. God's not finished. It doesn't mean your life is over. For look For Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and she called his name Seth: For God, said she She spoke to herself in the middle of her chaos For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. She said within herself It's not over. God's not done. Eve did not have a choice to reject the flirtatious behavior of Adam because she believed God's Word would not fail. She believed God would come through and the best was still her destiny. You cannot allow your personal failures the disappointments that come your way because of others undermine your hope that God's Word will come to pass. For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed. I'm here to tell someone the appointment you have is greater than your disappointment. The promise you have is better than the predicament you're in right now. Don't give up. What you've lost will not negate what God has for you. The mistakes you made cannot hinder the Word of God in your life. Eve is telling us the whole time she's in pain she has an appointment for something better. She has appointment for something better. It's not finished. It's October. What's the date? October 19th, 20th, somewhere around there? October what? 19th? Thank you for not knowing like me. If you have an appointment If you have an appointment for November 15th, do you have an appointment tomorrow, October 21st? 20th? No? Yeah you do. You have an appointment. You just haven't arrived for the fulfilling of that appointment. It's on the calendar. I've come to tell someone a word of hope in this house. Speak a word of faith to your spirit. There's an appointment on God's divine calendar of destiny. You don't know it. You're not sure when it is, but can you believe it's on the way. That's what Eve said. She said, the appointment that I have with the destiny of God's Word with the intersection of His word and my life I'm not there yet, but I believe enough to try again. I believe enough to believe again. Remember it's childbirth that brought pain and it's raising of those children that brings failure and shame, but Eve said, I'm so convinced of God's sovereignty, His faithfulness and His promise whatever I've got to do why I refuse to quit, to capitulate, to surrender, or to sell out. I still believe God's Word will come to pass. I will see the head of the serpent bruised. I will win in the end. Stand to your feet and love God right now. Don't let anyone drive you crazy. There's hope in this house for someone's life today. Seth is not another opportunity for failure. Seth is new beginning. But to have Seth, you have to be willing to be intimate again. To get what God wants to do in your life, you have to be willing to pray again. You have to open your closed heart and respond in faith to the Word of God again. You have to raise your hands and embrace the moving presence of God again. For God's Word will only manifest when He first moves. You have an appointment for something greater. And perhaps my favorite portion of this discourse is Genesis 5:1. Put it on the board. Chapter 4 is all about disappointment, failure, discouragement, frustration, shame, guilt, anger, despondency, violence, murder. That's chapter 4. But chapter 5 begins this way: This is the book This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; This is the book. Chapter 4 it's all about failure. Chapter 5, a new beginning. God said genealogist when you write the history of the first man and first woman start here, chapter 5. This is the book of the generations. Verse 2 Male and female created he them and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. Verse 3 Watch And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth. What about the other 129 years? God said It's not in my book. Some of you are worried about things that are not in your book. You're frustrated by things God's closed the book on. God's opened up another book for your tomorrow, your future, and your destiny, but you're fixated on what you did yesterday, last year. I want to know is God's promise still valid. Can you get past chapter 4 and live in the reality of chapter 5? This is the book. Now watch this. You ready? Verse 4. Watch. And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters. I don't know how many babies you can have in eight hundred years, but evidently it's a lot. Adam and Eve lose Cain and Abel, and Eve says I'll keep doing what I know to do to bring about God's promise. I don't know which one is going to bruise the head, but I'm not going to stop having babies until my answer arrives. For God said she hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel whom Cain slew. She believed Abel was the guy, but she said I'm just going to keep having babies. I'm going to keep equipping God to do the supernatural in my life. I'm not going to stop believing. I'm challenging someone today to worship again, to believe again, to dance again, to sing again. I'm asking anyone in this house, can you just dream with me a little bit. It's not over. Why don't you just keep having babies? Why don't you just keep singing songs? Why don't you just keep dancing in faith? Keep giving in the offering. Keep coming to the altar. Keep having the prayer of faith anointed on your head. Just keep believing
