Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
The diagnosis of disappointment
- He reads the Emmaus road account: two disciples walking away from Jerusalem whose eyes were holden, not knowing the risen Jesus who drew near and walked with them.
- Disappointment, by the word's own formation, is the undoing of an appointment: an event planned and expected, then removed from the calendar — he illustrates it from the last two years, when church itself was removed from the calendar for months at a time where he pastors in Maryland.
- The first symptom is overwhelming sadness: sadness that is no longer an isolated ebb and flow, as Ecclesiastes describes a time to weep and a time to laugh, but has moved into a person's everyday vocabulary and attitude.
- The second symptom is a desensitizing grief: the disciples looked at Jesus and did not recognize him, and heard the women's testimony that he was alive without believing it — disappointment numbs a person to the miracles in front of them.
- The third symptom is defeated expectation: their own words in verse 21, 'but we trusted,' confess a hope that has failed, and disappointment is dangerous because the kingdom operates on the currency of faith.
- He testifies of his own house: when his wife's father was diagnosed, they prayed and believed for a miracle, with prophetic words confirming it — and God did not do it the way they thought he would.
Scriptures: Luke 24:13-19; Ecclesiastes 3:4; Luke 24:21
The dangers: wrong direction and wrong perception
- The road between Jerusalem and Emmaus was built for travel to Jerusalem; disappointment puts a person on the right road headed in the wrong direction — in the church, but worshipping toward the old life.
- Jerusalem was where the disciples were gathered, where Jesus would appear and open their minds, and where the promise of the Holy Ghost was about to be poured out; there was nothing for them in Emmaus.
- Disappointment bends perception until a person looks past the resurrection to find the grave: Cleopas, looking at the risen Jesus, informs him that Jesus is dead.
- He confesses his own foolish questions in disappointment — asking God whether he knows what is going on — and warns against hunting for the needle of sorrow in the haystack of good.
- Yet disappointment does not run Jesus off: Jesus saw theirs on their faces, heard it in their conversation, and kept on walking with them anyway.
Scriptures: Luke 24:13-19
Defeating it: get the calendar back out and make an appointment
- Appointing comes with anointing: Isaiah's anointing is to appoint unto those that mourn in Zion beauty for ashes and the oil of joy for mourning, so the disappointed are to schedule again — put revival, joy and the garment of praise back on the calendar.
- The story turns at verse 33: the two disciples rose up the same hour and returned to Jerusalem; what reversed them was that, in the midst of their disappointment, they constrained Jesus — abide with us — when he made as though he would have gone further (verse 28).
- When they got a hold of Jesus, the fog lifted: their eyes were opened, and they said to one another, Didn't our hearts burn within us? (verse 32) — the burning presence of God is what draws a disappointed world.
- His altar call presses the house and the online hearers to invite Jesus in rather than afford a single service without him: he inhabits praise, so lift him up and magnify him, tears and all.

amen and so good to be here with you all and i really do feel at home maybe more than i even knew i was uh brother pastor whitley had told me about uh k brew coffee shop and i was over there sitting down today and i was working you ever had that feeling somebody's staring at you so i was working and i looked up and this guy was just staring at me kind of nodded like i'm saying nodded back so he walks over he's like hey andrew nope not andrew he said are you sure you're not injured i'm pretty sure he said you look identical to andrew he said what do you do for a living so we we were just there all of a sudden went from are you andrew to what do i do for a living um anyway i said well i'm a minister he said no you're definitely not an andrew so he left so then i was sitting there in the lady that was sitting across the way and she looked over at me and she said i have not seen you in forever and i said literally you have not and she said are you sure you're not so and so i said i'm positive i'm not whoever you think i am she said i i thought we went to church together a few years ago i said i'm possible i do go to church a lot but i don't think i'm who you think anyway so um and by the time the conversation was done she was saying well i'm sure knoxville would love it if you moved here and i said i don't i don't have that my plans but god if you're speaking whatever anyway so i do feel at home more so than i did just a day ago and what a blessing it has been to be able to be here at uh fac of knoxville and just the hospitality that has been shown to me and my wife she is ministering tonight back home in lexington park at our service so we really do covet your prayers thank you all for your prayers i want to look this evening into a portion of scripture in luke chapter 24 and beginning in verse 13 and i do want to again give honor to bishop and sister mccool pastor and sister mccool pastor anthony and his wife uh pastor nate and his wife and family amen you all are blessed with tremendous leadership you all know that right amen you all know that right amen so why don't we give a handclap to the great leadership of this church amen luke chapter 24 verse 4 13 and behold two of them went that same day to a village called emmaus which was from jerusalem about three score furlongs and they talked together of all these things which had happened and it came to pass that while they communed together and reasoned jesus himself drew near and went with them but their eyes were holden that they should not know him and he said unto them what manner of communications are these you have one to another as you walk and are sad and the one of them whose name was cleopas answering said unto him art thou only a stranger in jerusalem and has not known the things which are come to pass there in these days amen the lord bless you thank you for standing you may be seated i want to preach for just a little while or talk teach i don't know how it will come across tonight but on this thought defeating disappointment amen defeating disappointment last night i spoke in the leadership session about the essentiality of expectations and i shared a quote in that teaching last night from the american inventor by the name of charles keetering who said high achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectations that's true in an organization it's true as a member of a team it's also true in our own personal lives that high achievement only takes place in an environment where there is high expectation great things happen when there is great expectation and so tonight from this passage of scripture in luke chapter 24 a passage that follows two disciples that are traversing a seven mile stretch of road and i want to look tonight at the enemy of expectation if you simply look at the formation of the word disappointment it gives us a pretty accurate understanding of what it means to be disappointed first of all this as a prefix means it is the opposite of whatever follows in fact in some instances it is the undoing of whatever follows for example to us to assemble something means to put it together as parents we know what it's like to assemble our children's bedroom and we also know what disassembling means it's when they come in after we have assembled everything and they take it all apart to respect somebody is to show admiration and consideration for them and to disrespect is to treat that person with contempt it's the opposite of respect to make an appointment means that you put something on your calendar to plan for it it is the establishing of expectation when i say that i'm making an appointment there is an expectation that that event is going to happen that meeting is going to take place and disappointment is taking that event that moment that you have been planning for you've had it on your calendar and now you're removing it from the calendar and the last two years have been a boot camp in disappointment i don't know how it was here but in maryland we had three months of church removed from our calendar when coveted first started it wasn't because we wanted to we were mandated by our governor that for three months we were not able to have church now we had some online thing that i guess you could call church to me that wasn't really church but we made do thank god for technology at least we were able to stay connected at some level but those events that were on our calendar that we planned for all of a sudden were removed from our calendar during that stretch of time i was scheduled for a bucket list trip i had been scheduled to preach in australia they were going to take we were going to be there about three weeks they were going to take us to i guess the north and the southern part of australia they're in between preaching they were going to take us on a snorkeling trip they were going to show us all around australia i was looking forward to it and i was disappointed it was removed from my calendar i was scheduled during that time to preach or rather to go over and conduct a leadership retreat during that time and that was also removed from my calendar those are minor disappointments compared to what some went through in the last several years and as we look into our text in luke chapter 24 i believe that we find two disappointments that are dealing our two disciples rather that are dealing with disappointment two followers of jesus that are dealing with disappointment and so my objective tonight for the next few minutes is through this portion of scripture and through the help of the holy ghost three objectives number one to diagnose disappointment secondly to discuss the dangers of disappointment and ultimately thirdly to discover how to defeat disappointment so i begin by the diagnosis of disappointment there are several clues and cues that are apparent through the first 22 ver are through these 21 verses beginning in verse 13 that detail that this journey along the road of emmaus that let us know that these disciples are dealing with disappointment the first cue or clue that i would raise tonight to diagnose what they were dealing with as disappointment is what i would identify as overwhelming sadness the bible tells us in verse 17 that jesus draws near to these disciples he introduces himself into a conversation that they're already having with themselves the amplified version of the bible states verse 17 it identifies it this way jesus says to them what is this discussion that you are exchanging between yourselves as you walk along and the bible says that they stood still looking sad and downcast amen this was a sadness that consumes and overwhelms us a sadness that invades our conversation and overtakes our attitude a sadness that was so deep with these two disciples and so dark that not even the voice of jesus himself shook them out of their sadness a man sadness is something we incur in life right i was sad the other day when i had still a portion of my ice cream cone and i dropped it on the ground there was i felt the emotion of sadness sadness that is connected to an isolated situation or a circumstance that's just part of life right it's part of the ebb and the flow of life the writer of ecclesiastes gives voice to those emotional ebbs and flows when it tells us that there is a time to weep and there is a time to laugh there is a time to mourn and there is a time to dance even sadness has its time but when that sadness is no longer a part of the ebb and the flow of life when it's not an isolated event but when it's no longer just a part of a conversation but now it becomes our vocabulary when everything we talk about has the tinge of disappointment and sadness that is in there it takes over every conversation amen it makes its way into every conversation that we have and every communication that we participate in that's not sadness any longer now you are dealing with disappointment amen i want you to understand that when sadness is no longer an iso isolated event but it begins to make its way into your everyday attitude into your everyday conversation i would say that you're not just dealing with the ebb and flow of sadness you are dealing with disappointment the second trait that i identify in these two disciples on this seven mile track on road is a desensitizing grief amen diagnosing disappointment is a there is a desensitizing grief verse 16 tells us that after jesus catches up to them begins to walk with them it says that their eyes are holding that word holden simply means that they were kept they were restrained that they should not know that i don't think it was that jesus was restraining their eyes i think it was the disappointment that was restraining they're looking at jesus but they don't recognize him they're looking right and and these aren't two people that weren't familiar with jesus they were identified as disciples they're identified as followers but they're dealing with such a deep dark disappointment that even though they're looking at jesus who they're familiar with they don't recognize him they were looking at him but they couldn't see him we go on in verses 22 and 24 or through 24 and the bible says that these two disciples as they're talking they they speak and say that they heard the testimony of the women that had run to the sepulcher and they found that sepulchre was empty and they said that after that these women had an angel that visited them and told them jesus was not dead but that he was alive and then they went on and said that that story of those women was indeed confirmed by other disciples and so not only do they see jesus but they also hear an eyewitness testimony that says jesus is not dead he's alive so they see jesus or their eyes see him but they don't recognize him they hear the testimonies but they don't believe him believe those testimonies amen that is a desensitizing everybody ever been in such a place of grief that you're kind of numb to what's going on around you you don't recognize people that you would normally recognize you're just kind of in your you're in a daze you're just kind of walking there's a haze all around you and that is what these disciples are dealing with they're dealing with a desensitizing grief and this is a dilemma of dwelling and disappointment amen we all deal with disappointment but we've got to be careful not to dwell in disappointment because here's what happens it makes us numb to the miracles that are taking place around us because we've been disappointed we start to believe that god is not really working that god's not among us hey man you may deal with disappointment but you can't afford to dwell in disappointment because god can be working all around you and you don't recognize it there can be miracles taking place right in front of you but you don't recognize it because you're dwelling in disappointment amen testimonies of the goodness of god can i tell you god is still good i know we're dealing with coven but god is still good i know we're dealing with sickness but god is still good he's still healing he's still filling people with the holy ghost he's still delivering people from sin amen i come today to challenge somebody don't let your disappointment lead you to believe that god's not still doing miracles don't let your disappointment desensitize you and you can't even recognize that god is in this building tonight right now how do you know he's here because the bible tells me where two or three are gathered together in his name he's in the midst of this he's not very far from any one of us and so even right now are there people that aren't here tonight because they're dealing with sickness yes but there are still miracles in this house tonight they're still healing in this house tonight they're still delivering i wish somebody take off your disappointment and say i recognize jesus i recognize jesus amen jesus is in the house tonight if you're here tonight and you don't know jesus let me tell you you came to the right place if you walk in here tonight and you don't have the holy ghost let me tell you this is your night come on f.a.c do we believe that do we believe that you came to the right place to find jesus he's here i want to testify to somebody tonight jesus is still good in 2022 jesus is still on the throne amen amen desensitizing grief and then the third principle or the third characteristic the third symptom i should say that would help me to diagnose what these disciples are dealing with as disappointment is defeated expectation defeated expectation when we look at the word disappointment i know to begin tonight i looked at the formation of the word just grammatically kind of dissecting it but if you do a deeper study on the word disappointment here's what it means it means the defeat of expectation if you study the etymology of that word it's a failure of hope that's when when they begin to develop that word disappointment at its root it is a failure of hope it means hope has failed it is a defeat of i have these expectations and now they have been defeated and when you consider the currency upon which the kingdom of god operates which the kingdom in which we dwell in operates and it is the currency of faith amen the currency of faith everything you have in your life that you that is a part of the kingdom of god you got it through faith you didn't get through talent amen you didn't get through you didn't get through skill you didn't get through ability you didn't even get it through your good looks some of you just cut your eyes at me right there are you sure i'm sure about that all right let's see that's not how we got we got it through faith through faith we are say our salvation came through faith everything we've got in the kingdom of god came through faith and what is faith faith is the substance of things that's why disappointment is dangerous because disappointment is the failure of hope and when you dwell in disappointment you can no longer operate in faith how do you know they were dealing with the death of hope the failure of hope three words in verse 21 here's what they say to jesus these two disciples not recognizing who they're talking to here's what they say about really they're talking to resurrected jesus and they say but we trusted the new living translation says it this way but we hoped they were talking about they were they they had a they trusted that jesus was was still going to be alive they trusted that jesus that they could follow jesus and and and he was going to lead them and he was going to guide them and now jesus is dead at least they think so and they're saying we are disappointed we trusted we thought things were going to turn out differently than they did there's other ways that we verbalize the presence of disappointment but i thought and i ever said that i thought i thought it was going to go this way but it just felt like or it just seemed that it was going to go this way it just made sense or i thought for sure it was going to happen this way however you put it whatever words you use the message is the same our expectations have been defeated hey man we've all been there when we thought things were going to turn out differently when we thought things were going to go a different way than they went my wife shared at the marriage retreat this weekend that her father about a year and a half ago died passed away from als lou gehrig's disease and i remember when he was first diagnosed we were in walmart together when we got the phone call and we don't go to walmart that often so i can remember that we were in walmart i think we were getting some uh we were doing a fall festival and we were getting some supplies there for the fall festival when we got the call that he'd been diagnosed with als and we right there in walmart we prayed and our faith was high and we believed this was god established he was getting ready to do a miracle and show everybody around how great he was and we thought for sure we got phone calls with from people prophetically saying god is going to heal him he's not going to die from this sickness we thought it was going to go a certain way our expectations were high that god was going to do it made sense to us that god is going to step in and do a miracle but you know what god didn't do things the way that we thought he was going to do it and we were dealing with disappointment anybody ever been there have you been there when god didn't do things the way that you thought he was going to do it have you been there when you prayed and said it would make sense for god to heal but god didn't heal the way that he thought you was go have you been there have you dealt with disappointment now let me identify the dangers of disappointment the first danger of disappointment is identified in the opening verse and it deals with direction the bible tells us that these two disciples are on their way to a village called emmaus commentaries and discussions in fact if you look in your bible and it kind of has it broken down by uh you know sometimes it will kind of give you a a a sub topic that you're dealing with and many times in the scripture when it's when it speaks of this instance that takes place beginning in verse 13 it refers to it as the encounter on the road to emmaus the encounter on the road to emmaus however this seven mile stretch of road that linked together jerusalem and emmaus was never meant to be the road to emmaus it was meant to be the road to jerusalem it was established so that people that lived in emmaus could make their way to jerusalem to worship this was not meant to be the road even though we refer to it as disciples on the road to emmaus it wasn't meant to be disciples on the road to emmaus it was meant to be disciples on the road to jerusalem here's the deal when you deal with disappointment you'll end up on the right road but headed in the wrong direction it wasn't emmaus where all the disciples were gathered all the disciples were back in jerusalem it was jerusalem not emmaus where jesus in just a few verses was going to appear unto all the disciples and open their mind to the scriptures jerusalem is where the holy ghost was going to be poured out in just a few days in the upper room and the promise was going to be shared with humanity jerusalem is the place where there was going to come a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and fill all the house listen they were on the right road but they were headed in the wrong direction and when you're dealing with disappointment you can be in the church but headed in the wrong direction amen you can be in the house of god but your worship is going the wrong way amen you used to worship god with a fervency but now disappointment has set in and your worship isn't what it wants what i wish somebody let the devil know right now hey man i'm on the right road and i'm heading in the wrong and the right direction i'm not going back to emmaus i'm going to jerusalem [Music] i'm not asking you to let me know i want you to let the devil know i'm still on the right road and i'm still headed in the right direction yes i dealt with disappointment god didn't do it the way i thought he was going to but i'm still going to lift my hands i'm still going to clap my hands i'm still going to get pray hey come on somebody he didn't heal my father-in-law but he's still worthy of praise he didn't do it the way i thought he would but he's still worthy of prayer you've got to let the devil know i'm going to jerusalem [Applause] it's not easy when you're really dealing with disappointment it's difficult to praise you see emmaus there there was nothing for these disciples in emmaus emmaus represented an old way of living emmaus represented their life before jesus had called them emmaus when they were on the road to emmaus what it really was saying is we're going back to what we were before jesus called us we're going back to what we were before we were disappointed listen here's the deal they weren't really walking to emmaus they were running from jerusalem and disappointment will put you on the right road but in the wrong direction all across our nation all across the world there are statistics that are coming back in about what's happening in churches since covet hit and as much as 50 percent of people are not going back to church why because they've been disappointed things didn't go the way that they thought they would in our nation we're dealing with a pandemic we're dealing with racial tension we're dealing with all kinds of things and if we're not careful we'll let that make its way into our worship but i just one more time tonight want to let the devil know i'm still on the right road and i'm still going in the right direction yes i'm concerned about our nation but i'm not going to let it rob me of my praise come on things may not be going the way i want them to but god is still on the throne he's still worthy i wish somebody in the middle of your disappointment would clap your hands i wish somebody dealing with disappointment tonight would raise your hands and lift your voice and say god you're still worthy come on if job could do it you could do it if job could say he gives and he takes away but blessed be i still trust him come on fac we're gonna make it through this god's gonna bless us revival is on its way but you can't afford to dwell in disappointment [Applause] hallelujah [Applause] it's not time to go back to emmaus it's not time to go back to what we were before he called us the promise is still waiting in jerusalem the second danger of disappointment deals with perception jesus walks beside them and asks them why are you so sad what can possibly be so bad and cleopas disappointed cleopas says paraphrasing and i catch the irony of this but cleopas says to resurrected jesus you must be the only person that hasn't heard that jesus is dead cleopas looks at resurrected jesus and said you must be the only person in all of jerusalem that hasn't got the news that jesus is dead hey resurrected jesus just in case you haven't heard you're dead yeah that sounds foolish doesn't it but when we're dealing with disappointment we can say some foolish things i have to be honest and say that i've said some foolish things in the middle of my disappointment i prayed in my prayer time and say hey god are you do you know what's going on down here have you heard what the news about what's happening have you seen what's going on in our nation have you heard what's going on in our churches that's a foolish question of course god sees of course god hears amen but disappointment will cause you to look past the resurrection and get you to find death they're looking at the resurrection but all they can see is death it will cause you to look past victory to try to find defeat it will cause you to look past joy in order to find sorrow it will cause you to look past the silver lining so you can find the cloud i'm here tonight to tell you i'm not looking for dead jesus i want to resurrect jesus i'm not here tonight looking for defeat i came tonight to celebrate victory amen i don't want to inform jesus that he's dead i just want to celebrate that he is alive [Applause] come on somebody it's not time to find sorrow it's a time to find joy jesus is alive he's here in this building tonight don't look past the jesus that is here to find disappointment jesus is alive [Applause] come on somebody clap your hands i'm almost finished even if you don't clap because what you thought i would said was good clap because i'm almost finished it's time to cast off disappointment don't let your defeated expectations lead you to look past the resurrection to find the grave don't let your failed hope cause you to look past joy to find so i know people that can they can find the bad in all the good i mean if if bad is the needle in the haystack they'll find it amen if sorrow is the needle in the haystack they'll dig through all the hay and they'll find that needle of sorrow amen they'll find the bad that's in the good i don't want to be that tonight i want to find the good jesus is standing right before us jesus is saying hey fac get ready because i'm about to bless you jesus is saying if they see look around you you're in a miracle building i provided for you i didn't bring you this far to leave you i didn't bring you this far to let you down i'm still on the throne i'm alive i'm not dead why why are you sad why are you sorrowful i'm alive he didn't give you this big old building what a what an amazing building i'll trade you i trade you all right just fair right even up i trade you what a beautiful building god's blessed you with pastor nate took me through and showed me the the old building and wow what a great work god he didn't give you this building so he could be half empty he's going to fill it up yes he is he's going to fill it up i believe god we're going to see revival in 2022 i've hey if you're a pessimist i'm not looking for pessimism i came tonight to celebrate optimism i came to celebrate jesus is alive if you're looking for a grave you can have the grave i'm not here tonight looking for a grave i'm here tonight to celebrate the resurrection we got to get rid of our disappointment don't let our defeated expectations don't let failed hopes cause us to look past joy to find sorrow if the prefix this is the undoing then we need to undo the prefix we need to get rid of this and it what does that mean it's time to make an appointment yeah amen i want to tell somebody tonight if you are dealing with disappointment it's time for you to get your calendar back out you might be looking at your calendar i look back at mine and all kinds of things that used to be on my calendar have been scratched out you need to get your calendar out again and you need to start scheduling some things in the holy ghost you need to start scheduling that god is going to fill this church up put it on your calendar amen don't leave all those blank spaces you need to put it on the calendar on this date god is going to fill my neighbor with the holy ghost on this date god is going to fill this church to overflowing on this date we're going to have revival and god is going to move [Applause] because my bible tells me that appointing comes with anointing how many of you got the holy ghost all right only i thought more of you did only about a third of you how many got the holy ghost have you got the holy ghost and you're glad you got it hey when you got the holy ghost you got an anointing isaiah said in isaiah chapter 61 verse 1 the spirit of the lord is upon me because the lord has anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek he didn't stop there though in verse 3 talking about that same anointing he said the anointing is upon me to appoint to appoint unto those that mourn in zion beauty for ashes joy for mourning if you got the holy ghost you have the authority to appoint i'm going to put joy in my calendar i'm going to put beauty on my calendar i'm going to put the garment of praise in my cap i'm not coming to church morning i'm coming to church in a garment of praise how many of you got the holy ghost then you have the anointing you have the authority to appoint why don't we stand up right now and appoint revival over knoxville [Applause] why don't you stand up and appoint why don't you put an appointment in your calendar that god is going to give you a new bible study to teach and he's going to fill that person with the holy ghost hey you have the authority but you've got to appoint it hallelujah let's give god pray we're appointing things right now in the holy ghost we're appointing things amen i say pastor mccool whatever you appoint right now i believe god has your back bishop god has your back pastor nate god has your back pastor anthony god is behind you fac god is behind us we are anointed to a point hallelujah i'm going to conclude you could be seated for just another minute the dangers of disappointment but i want to give you a a little bit of a headline breaking news your disappointment doesn't run jesus off yes it will destroy you if you don't deal with it if the longer you dwell there the more it will desensitize you but it doesn't scare jesus off yes you will end up in the wrong place if you keep going toward emmaus you'll end up in emmaus if you don't turn this thing around you'll end up with a messed up perspective but your disappointment doesn't scare jesus jesus knew these two disciples were disappointed he saw it he saw it on their face he heard it in their conversation he could have been let down he could have said you know what you don't recognize me i'm gonna go find somebody else who knows who i am how long was i with you guys you can't recognize me here i am trying to have conversation with you and all you want to do is talk about dead me i'm the resurrection here i am and you want to talk about the grave and he could have walked off and left them there but jesus didn't do that you know what he did he kept on walking with him in the middle of their disappointment jesus got right in between those disciples and he just kept on walking with them jesus is not afraid of your disappointment even though you may not recognize him jesus is walking with you right now amen he walks with us yea though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death i will fear no evil because right in the middle of my disappointment thou art with me come on after my father-in-law passed away there were some dark days and dark nights but i watched my wife bow down on her knees and pray and i witnessed the holy ghost move in there and comfort her i came to tell somebody tonight your disciple your disappointment didn't run jesus off so let me conclude by just telling us because i didn't just come to diagnose or to tell us the danger but rather to tell us i believe in this passage there are some clues to how we can defeat disappointment because the story doesn't end with two disciples in emmaus they're on their way there but that's not where the story ends it doesn't end with them going back to emmaus and living their old lives no verse 33 brings this story to a conclusion and it says those two disciples rose up that same hour and returned to jerusalem that lets me know there's victory over disappointment yeah i was on the wrong i was on the right road going the wrong direction but there was something that happened that got me back going the right way and here's what it is verse 28 says and as they drew nigh unto the village of emmaus jesus made as though he would have gone further jesus says i want to see how bad you want my presence i'm going to act like i'm going to keep i'm going to act like i'm going down the road to the church down the street see if they want some jesus i'm just going to see what how bad fac wants my presence is what he said i want to see how bad these disciples want my presence among them and the bible said he made as if he would have gone further but here's their saving grace but they got a hold of jesus they constrained him and yeah i'm in the middle of my disappointment but i still have enough sense to know that without jesus i've got nothing yes i'm dealing with disappointment i've still got enough common sense to know that if jesus doesn't show up tonight we've got nothing to offer our world fac we got to get a hold of jesus and say jesus abide with us hey lord don't pass me by i need you tonight while on others thou are calling please don't pass me by at the end what reversed the course of their disappointment and rerouted them from emmaus to jerusalem was that in the midst of their disappointment they had enough sense to say jesus abide with us i may be dealing with disappointment desensitizing grief unmet expectations but i'm still wise enough to know that i'm nothing without jesus come on i've been i've had this pastoring in the last year and a half has been crazy there have been monday mornings i woke up disappointed disappointed because people were sick in the hospital and i prayed the prayer of faith and they weren't healed and i wonder where jesus just being honest amen making decisions during this time was tough and i dealt with disappointment but i'm still smart enough to know that i need jesus i'm still smart enough to wake up and say jesus i need you lord please don't pass me by you lord we need you to abide with us and if there's ever been an hour that we cannot afford to have an absence of god in our presence it's this hour i don't care if it's wednesday night sunday morning sunday night there we cannot afford to have one church service where jesus doesn't abide with us [Music] i know it's wednesday night and i'm almost finished but i wish somebody to help me right now and let's get the attention of the almighty god jesus abide with us come on fac do you still realize what's what's the hope for our world it's not our choir it's not our musicians it's not this building it's jesus he inhabits praise you want to know how to get him to abide you want to know how to constrain jesus praise him lift him up and magnify him i know you're disappointed but he's still worthy [Applause] [Music] come on there might be tears in your eyes your perception might be clouded amen but i believe there's still an awakening in our churches that we recognize we need jesus and the very last point here it is the bible says in verse 32 after they had said don't don't don't don't go on dwell abide with us in verse 32 the bible says after their eyes were opened jesus vanishes right after they got a hold of jesus and said abide with us the scales fall from their eyes and now all of a sudden they read the the fog of disappointment is fall that's what happens when you get a hold of jesus is that fog of disappointment begins to drift off the bible says after jesus vanished they looked at each other and they said hey didn't our hearts burn within us you want to know what saved those disciples on that road not ending up in emmaus going back to being carpenters and fishermen and going back to what they were before jesus found them it was they recognized the presence of god it was that there was a burning in the spirit amen my soul burned within me what's going to draw our disappointed world into our churches on sunday morning it's when they walk in here and they feel something here they can't find anywhere else you can't find what we've got at starbucks you can't find what we've got at walmart you can't find what we've got a target amen but we can't afford to have one service where the move of god is not present we can't afford we can't afford to have passionless church because the only thing that rescues a disappointed soul from ending up going in the wrong direction as they walk in did you feel that oh we've got some new folks that have just started coming to our church and they don't know anything about pentecost they just what they told me is we don't know anything about this we just we felt something we've never felt before and that's what's going to keep them coming that's what's going to draw them to an altar it's not how beautiful you are and i love you guys have the best of the best but it's not this praise team it's not the drummer it's not the keyboardist it's not even the preacher that's preaching but it's the moving of the holy ghost come on somebody it's the do you feel what i feel hey fac do you feel what i feel tonight jesus is in this place [Applause] [Music] i want to ask us if we would tonight before we before we dismiss if if we could come to this altar and i'm not naive enough there are people here tonight dealing with disappointment things haven't gone the way you maybe maybe perhaps people that are here or joining us online you've lost loved ones in this last i don't know i don't know your story i don't know what's going on but what i do know is jesus is still good the promise is still waiting for us in jerusalem we can't afford we can't afford to go back to emmaus we can't afford to go back to being what we were before jesus rescued us and the only thing that's going to save us listen the holy ghost i don't have the corner on the market on the holy ghost if you've got the holy ghost you've got the same holy ghost i do you have the same ability right now to raise your hands and the move that god take place i'm not the only one right now that can raise my hands and say i feel jesus come on does i don't know do you feel that my soul is burning within me even right now i believe there are people watching online and i pray you would feel what we feel in this place right now if they see we're not going back to emmaus we're going to jerusalem we're not going back to what we were five years ago we're going to the promises of god amen god is going to bring the disappointment there they're going to come drug addicts alcoholics they're going to come and they're going to walk into this building and they're going to say i feel something here i feel something here come on help me right now let's let's invite jesus into this place let's invite jesus into this place hallelujah hallelujah that's it cast off your disappointments
