Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The text - learn of me

  • He announces his subject, biblical humility, and reads his text twice: 'Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart.'
  • He confesses the embarrassment of teaching on humility - if you think you have it, you have just lost it - and prays to teach faithfully and receive the teaching first himself.

Scriptures: Matthew 11:29-30

Pride is the root

  • Pride alone produces contention in every church fight, marriage, and friendship; God abominates the proud heart and destroys the house of the proud while keeping the widow's boundary.
  • Pride goes before destruction, and it is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Scriptures: Proverbs 13:10; Proverbs 15:25; Proverbs 16:18-19

The humble king

  • God has shown what he requires: do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God - humility is not a feeling but an act of the will, chosen daily.
  • Zechariah's king comes humble, mounted on a donkey, and Matthew Henry's line stands behind the lesson: true greatness is true humility.

Scriptures: Micah 6:6-8; Zechariah (book-only, as spoken)

The servant who did not grasp

  • Isaiah 53 gives the suffering servant who had no form or comeliness, bore our griefs, and opened not his mouth - the Lord's own humility.
  • Paul writes in Colossians 2 that God made us alive together with him, blotted out the handwriting against us, and nailed it to the cross, triumphing over principalities and powers.

Scriptures: Isaiah 53; Colossians 2:13-15

Crucified with Christ

  • Paul's testimony, delivered twice: 'I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.'

Scriptures: Galatians (book-only, as spoken)

He spoke only what the Father said

  • Through John's Gospel Jesus insists he can do nothing of himself, speaks only what the Father taught him, and came not to do his own will - a humility no mere man could imitate, because he was the incarnate God humbling himself.

Scriptures: John (book-only, as spoken)

Perfecting the art of self-demotion

  • Paul descends across his life: least of the apostles - 'by the grace of God I am what I am' - then least of the saints, then, writing to Timothy in his last year, chief of sinners.
  • The lesson lands on success: God calls his servants to humility, not strength, and the final Word will be, 'Well done, good and faithful slave.'

Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 15:8-10; Ephesians 3:8; 1 Timothy (book-only, as spoken)

Clothe yourselves with humility

  • James says the lowly brother should boast in his exaltation, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
  • Peter closes the charge: be subject to the elders, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, and humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.

Scriptures: James (book-only, as spoken); 1 Peter (book-only, as spoken)

Scripture index: Matthew 11:29-30; Proverbs 13:10; Proverbs 15:25; Proverbs 16:18-19; Micah 6:6-8; Zechariah (book-only, as spoken); Isaiah 53; Colossians 2:13-15; Galatians (book-only, as spoken); John (book-only, as spoken); 1 Corinthians 15:8-10; Ephesians 3:8; 1 Timothy (book-only, as spoken); James (book-only, as spoken); 1 Peter (book-only, as spoken).

Thank you pastor Urshan. Thank you church family for the warm introduction. Thank you for your hospitality Would you open your Bibles with me? Matthew St. Matthew chapter 11, and I would like to read verses 29 and 30 For our text. I'm going to I'm going to teach tonight if that's okay the proclamation of the gospel is preaching and Tonight this is to the church specifically to the church Take my yoke upon you And learn of me Jesus says For I am meek and lowly in heart and you shall find rest into your souls Take my yoke upon you and learn of me For I am meek and lowly in heart and you shall find rest into your souls from my yoke is easy My burden is light my subject tonight is Biblical humility. I'm going to name what I have to say Taken from the words of the Lord learn from me father in the name of Jesus Help me to teach Faithfully

this evening. I pray for grace upon the speech Upon the words Jesus name this most important subject Let it be handled with grace and Received with grace Jesus name we pray Amen Be seated Proverbs 13 and 10 only by pride Cometh contention, but with the well counseled is wisdom Proverbs 15 and 25 The Lord tears down the house of the proud But maintains the widow's boundaries Proverbs 16 and 18 Pride goes before destruction the haughty spirit before a fall It's better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor Than to divide the spoil with the proud Micah 6 and 6 With what shall I come before the Lord and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams and 10,000s of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression? The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul.

He has told you oh Man what is good. He has told you what the Lord requires of you To do justice to love kindness and To walk humbly With your God, I'm A an anglophile and by that I mean I love the English language It's nuances its intricacies its histories also also very fascinating to me I'm not always a fan of some of the more recent developments, but that's because I'm a curmudgeon also and One thing that's begun to irritate me quite a bit is that is Speaking of having a relationship with God now I'm not going to condemn anybody who says it I'm not even to criticize you for it. It's just beginning to wear on me a little bit probably because I heard it I heard it used in a certain way, and I didn't particularly care for it and Little bit persnickety about this and I Just can't find any any biblical vocabulary for having a relationship with God The

word relationships been around for a really long time, but it was never chosen by the translators of the King James English who who happened actually at the apex of our language to have Had all of our vocabulary at their disposal and never chose to use the word relationship But instead they they consistently spoke in both testaments of Having a walk with God a walk with God and the problem I have with relationship is Beyond it being multi-syllabic when you have a word walk is With relationship notice how how very post-modern and vague it is It doesn't there's no meat on it. There's you get to you know It's just kind of abstract relationship. I have a relationship with God Well, the devil has a relationship with God, too It's just not a good one and and really you can't help but have a relationship with God It just kind of allows you if you overuse it and you think in those terms to

dictate the terms But walk with God That's something you have to do every day you ever take a walk with somebody if you're not keeping up with them You fall behind and you have to adjust you have to calibrate all the time every step you have to calibrate Pretty soon you start walking in sync And then and what what's really great is I can always tell I can always tell Two people are walking, you know, basically together I always tell when they have a pretty good relationship and they're talking because when you talk You walk together when you're not talking, but you're supposed to be walking together one of you is behind the other Talk God has told you. Oh Man, what is good? What the Lord requires of you? Among a couple of other things most emphatically he has called you and Requires of you to walk humbly with God Humility is the Christian single greatest characteristic. It's how you walk with

God It's how you keep a step with him. It's how you talk to him To live in perfect humility before God and man, that's your you're calling Humility is the supreme evidence that you're a Christian Humility is the virtue that makes all other virtues possible There are three reasons why humility should be the supreme goal of the Christian first We are created Second that sorry. This is part of the first. I'm quoting scripture here. It is he who has made us and not we ourselves We're created we should be humble Second reason is that we're sinners and the third reason for humility is that we are saints Contrary to the passions of our flesh It's perfectly natural for such creatures as we are created Redeemed made holy by the blood of the Lamb of God to seek perfect humility Humility is not merely a shame born of the sins. We've committed There's another side to humility humility is the heart and soul of

the saint It's the beautiful robe of many colors It's the very character of our God who forgives those who yesterday spit upon him who today showers Blessings upon the grateful and the ungrateful who some tomorrow will resurrect all the millions of pardon rebels he saved Heaven looks upon humility and cherishes it What Christmas is to the child what the wedding is to the bride What a quiet night with a book is to the studious what a championship is to the athlete humility is to heaven God exalts the humble He sends his grace to the humble he saved the world with humility Jesus said whoever will be the first among you must be the servant of everyone Why because in heaven's eyes humility is the truest form of leadership? No humility is not just being sorry for our sins. It's Sharing in the life of Jesus It's the highest purpose. It's the truest joy of the servant to see his service pleasing the master

It is in the words of our text What the Lord requires of you? But to judge from the life of the average Christian Humility is not among the prized virtues It isn't seen as essential to walking with Jesus But it was a failure of humility that compelled Adam and Eve to disobey God's clear instruction It was a failure of humility that led Cain to kill his brother It was a failure of humility that compelled men to build build the Tower of Babel It was a failure of humility that stirred up Envy and Joseph's brothers It was a failure of humility of humility. It was pride. It's the root cause of sin It's the systemic cause of all unhappiness in the world the voice of our enemy took hold of our hearts He injected pride into our souls pride is Satanic It's the unmistakable presence of the devil if humility is The necessary evidence of Christ living within then pride is the evidence of

Satan's leadership in your life While your imagination tells you that Satan's presence will look like someone Levitating off the ground or a child tearing himself and cursing and blaspheming or a voice whispering in the darkness All of this is just child's play compared to the real presence of the demonic pride is the fallen angels in you Not so long ago. I remember in our church We dismissed service Ultra call was done and then a man appeared in the back in the back right right back center row And I'd never seen him before he's wearing a leather vest. Yes move over brother. So this is not you. It was very smooth This isn't gonna be a good story He was wearing a leather vest and he had a bolo tie and he had like a ring on every finger with a great big jewel on each ring and Who is this and why is he coming now and and Then he started walking down

towards the center aisle and I was kind of cleaning up the pulpit area Really got my attention when he pulled a rock out of his pocket and it had a great big pentagram in it and Then he held it up before him and then to his face He held it right there and walked and started chanting on his way down to the altar And just a couple steps before he got to me He was tackled and the Saints of the Most High took care Defensive player of the year It was great, but but again in retrospect looking back upon that Child's play that wasn't really that wasn't really the presence of the devil that didn't scare anybody I mean it it kind of Stood the hair up on the back of the neck of a few people I suppose but Unfortunately, we don't recognize the presence of the enemy quite as well when it comes in the form of pride And we let

it get all the way to the altar and Then walk away from the altar with it, but that's the demonic presence that you should be worried about Pride is a prayer that you pray to the devil When you act in pride you might as well be holding a prayer meeting to the devil Pride makes you vulnerable to satanic attack It is the portal through which he enters your life and troubles your mind and sows chaos into your family and brings division in the church Pride turns this beautiful world that God made into a prison you want to escape Pride can can turn all that was meant for your joy and happiness into a source of misery Pride will ruin any place Pride is what turned heaven into hell for Satan Pride will darken your brightest day It will turn your best friend into your greatest enemy Pride will turn your marriage into a battlefield Pride will turn a church into a cult of

Personality pride will dim your life and disappear your blessings Pride is a thief that tiptoes into your future and steals your joy Pride takes what should have been warm memories that give comfort and blessing in your old age and turns them into memorials of grief and sorrow God hates pride and doesn't the Bible say that God resists the proud If I had a child come up here on the platform and start to try to wrestle with me It wouldn't last very long I Think I could take him. I haven't been tried in a while If my 28 year old son Ethan or my 26 year old son Carter Approached me I'd be in trouble if an angel Resisted me we could wrestle all night. I wouldn't get anywhere, but if God resisted me forget it It's over if pride was our downfall though Humility is Part of our salvation in fact it was humility that saved us For the incarnation of God in

Christ was an act of supreme humility Though he was in the form of God He didn't regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but he emptied Himself and took the form of a slave was born in human likeness But the humiliation is not over God it would have been a great humiliation just for for God to become an angel a created thing an even greater humiliation to become a Human king sitting upon the throne of Rome it would have been a great humiliation for him to become Just a peasant in the world But think of how far the humiliation went because the song that the early Christian wrote that I've been quoting right here He became obedient unto death to death obedient to death Even the death of the cross You know who got crucified criminals You weren't even you didn't even have the social standing of a slave If you were a criminal you were pushed on to the cross

right off of the world you didn't matter You didn't hardly exist. That's how far he condescended Pride can defeat and ruin an angel of God and make him a devil But humility can take flesh and blood fallen in sin Like you and me and exalt us to the highest angels This has been the purpose of God in raising a new kingdom out of a kingdom of fallen angels It exists in conflict between the fire and pride of the fallen spirits and the humility of the Lamb of God God is systematically Destroying the pride of hell through the humility of the Son of God and his saints He's going to make pride end in hell and humility end in heaven and at the last trumpet This mission will be accomplished You might almost say that the whole purpose of history is to demonstrate the futility and foolishness of pride and The glory and honor of humility if you could see what pride does to

your soul If you could have the eyes to witness in the present what you will plainly see on the other side of life That each thought and act of pride adds another habit of hell to your character If you could see that you're adding to your life something that God has used all of history and trained All of the power of Calvary and the whole weight of heaven to destroy you would with your whole heart and Every moment plead with God to tear that viper out of your life You wouldn't play with pride you wouldn't live with it for a moment when you sense its presence The hair on the back of your neck would stand on end and you would take extreme measures to exercise it from your heart You would call upon the name of the Lord And if you could see what humility though does to your soul If you could have the eyes to witness in the present What

will be plain as day on the other side of life that each act and thought of humility Brings the joys of heaven in the golden light of lamb of God into your character If you could see that you're adding something to your life That God is using all of history and has trained the whole power of Calvary and all of the hosts of heavens to uphold You would with your whole heart and with every waking moment plead with God to take whatever means Necessary to fill your heart with humility. I have heard someone say once that Be careful that you don't pray to God for two things don't pray for patience and Don't pray for humility because God might answer those prayers painfully. Oh No, no, no pray For him to give you patience and pray for him to give you humility. He loves you more than you love you I would rather be in his hands than my own if anyone in

history Had something to be proud of it was Jesus he'd made the very world on which he walked He'd formed the very stars that twinkled in the distant reaches of space over his head It was he who formed the seas that roared It was his face his face that every body of water on earth was waiting to reflect It was his feet that every road in the world waited for the tread of his feet It was he who made the mother who bore him It was he who called the Syrian out of Ur and delivered Israel out of Egypt It was he who had jewels in his crown named Abraham Isaac and Jacob It was he who made the hill upon which he was crucified. It was he who formed the tree that held him fast We we have all the reasons in the world to be humble Everything we have was given to us Here we are dust talking Sitting and laughing

and listening and doing theology and praying and singing and dancing Dust but Jesus Christ had every reason to be proud But look at who the Son of God was When he walked on earth Shall we look at this for a moment? The Prophet Zechariah said that the Messiah would come in the following manner Behold your King cometh to you humble and mounted on a donkey Humility is why Calvary is the focal point of our faith It's the place where the Son of God reached the point of ultimate humiliation Here he was crucified by his own creation made subject to silly kings and princes He didn't even get to say that he was slain on a field of battle amongst noble warriors He was crucified between two criminals, but they weren't serial killers or evil geniuses They were hardly threats to anyone except to purses and deposit boxes The Son of God died in the same lineup as petty pickpockets Instead of a crown

of gold. He was given a crown of thorns instead of a robe fit for royalty He was given utter nakedness instead of loyal friends around him. He was betrayed and Left alone and instead of a royal court around him hanging on his every word. He had mockers and taunters Jesus was baptized twice once in the River Jordan and once with the spit of his mockers Why all of this humiliation? Biblically the cross accomplished the undoing of What pride had built between us and God his humiliation his humbleness Being hung upon a cross was a show To all of the ages and to all the principalities and powers all that was lifted up in pride He was the opposite of them when I read The the book of Isaiah chapter 53 and I hear this first impressive line who has believed our report and To whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? Arm of the Lord. That's the flexed Arm the muscle of

God. When did he roll up his sleeve and flexed for all of eternity to see when was God Demonstrated his most powerful And you would expect to see that what follows such a description of the arm of the Lord. I Think you would expect to see a king riding upon a white horse followed by the hosts of heaven Traditional displays of power, but you don't get that at all instead. What you get is He was a Tender branch a Root out of dry ground He goes on to say things like We esteemed that he was smitten of God He was afflicted and we turned our faces away from him because we couldn't look at the humiliation The chastisement of our peace was laid upon him But with his stripes We're healed What a display Calvary was When Jesus was on the cross that was God flexing his muscles The power of God is in humility. Why aren't you humble Paul says in Colossians

2 You who were dead in your trespasses God made alive together with him having forgiven us all our trespasses by Canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands and this he set aside and nailed it to the cross and in So doing he disarmed the rulers He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame and triumphed over them Humility is the aim of our redemption Pride must die in you if there is to be any heaven in you God increases in you exactly to the degree that you decrease in Your own eyes if you can be nothing God can be everything Paul said do nothing out of selfish ambition nothing But in loneliness of mind think of others as better than yourself When you think and act in pride God is going to feel very far from you Pride will make God seem less real to you Think of the Pharisee who prayed so that

he could be seen and heard of men See how unreal God was to him God was so unreal to this Pharisee that when he prayed his prayers were really directed instead of at the Almighty at Men who could hear him God was so unreal to him that his prayers were really only requests made to other men to give him honor And what a lowly honor is our best honor to bestow the Apostle Paul said I Have been crucified with Christ Try to embarrass a dead man Try to get a response Out of a dead man. I have been crucified with Christ and it's no longer I who live But Christ who lives in me and the life I now live In the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me Do you hear that not I but Christ lives in me What is the Apostle Paul tell the Corinthian church? You're lifted up

in pride and you think you think you have all of these great gifts and your talented people, but What do you have that wasn't given to you? What do you have that wasn't given to you and if it was given to you? Why do you boast as if it was your own? look at Christ Jesus says in the gospel of John. I'm just going through a couple verses in John's gospel Look at Christ. Remember he said learn of me Here's what Jesus said about his own teaching in his own words in the gospel of John He said my teaching is not mine But his who sent me Then he said and the word that you hear is not mine, but the fathers who sent me In another place he said the son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the father doing Another place I can do nothing on my own But judge what I hear and seek

the will of the father who sent me In another place I do nothing on my own authority, but I speak just as the father taught me In another place he says I have not spoken on my own authority But the father gave me a commandment on what to say and I speak as the father has told me and then in his great priestly prayer He said to the father I have given them the words that you gave me and they have received them and have come To know in truth that I came from you Learn of me stop taking credit for everything stop feeling like you need to take credit for things Give glory and honor to God Learn of me Jesus says I am gentle and lowly in heart and you'll find rest for your souls And then another place he says whoever exalts himself will be humbled Whoever humbles himself will be exalted Whoever humbles himself like this child It's the

greatest in the kingdom and Jesus walked with his disciples for three years He taught them in word indeed and yet at the end of three years Two of his disciples Jostled over which one would be the greatest in the kingdom. What a story that is after all you've witnessed Can I sit at your right hand in the kingdom? Can I sit at your left hand? This marks gospel and then we don't see anybody again at Jesus's right and left hand Until Calvary you want to sit at Jesus right hand There's a cross for you You want to sit at Jesus left hand There's a cross for you You want to be great in this kingdom? There's a cross for you Jesus Taught for three years and the disciples still didn't get it, but once He ascended into heaven and sent his spirit At Pentecost What? Did not take place in the life of the disciples while he walked with them in the flesh

Did began to take place in them when they were full of the Holy Ghost They became humble and as water seeks the lowest point Seek the lowest position at the table Jesus taught and that's what they began to do and there at the lowest position Of the table God pours out his grace to that one First when God was set to make the best of Christians with the Apostle Paul he took the worst of sinners It wasn't sin that made him humble Some people make that mistake and say well where sin abounds grace much more sin makes me humble God loves humility so sin helps us be humble, but no it isn't sin that makes a man humble It's grace that makes a man humble Paul said by the grace of God I am what I am but the past record of sin did remind him that he was completely Reliant upon the grace of God Paul was only a Christian because of

God's grace He was only a good man because it wasn't Paul that was living his life It was Christ living in and through him His goodness was not his own The life I live now is not I And so it was with all of the Apostles as you go through the course of Paul's life you can track the chronology First Corinthians was written in about the year 51 or 52 after Christ and there in chapter 15 Paul says and Last of all the risen Jesus appeared to me Who am the least of the Apostles I persecuted the church and then he goes on to give God praise Least of the Apostles that's a pretty select company, but then several years later He writes a letter to the Ephesians and Here's what he says This grace was given to me to share the riches the unsearchable riches of Christ Steward of a mystery This was given to me Who am the least of the

saints? There are a lot more saints than there are Apostles you see what's happened. He's done. He's been demoted in his own eyes He went from the last the 13th disciple To the last to the least of all the folks in the church, but he wasn't done demoting himself Because when we get to the last year of his life, he writes to Timothy and he says This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance that Christ died for sinners of whom I am chief not was Him now there's a lot more sinners than there are saints the chief of sinners You see he had completely emptied himself and now just Christ the life I live now I live by the grace of Jesus Christ There's no instruction. I could possibly give you That would be a greater blessing to your life Then for you to go out of here and consider your vocation in life. It's not the job. You're going to

tomorrow It's not the school you're going to tomorrow It's not the plans you're making But to do this one thing make this one goal to rid yourself of all pride And to embrace humility and when God allows you to walk into situations where you get hurt You get wounded you get offended don't walk out of here the life. I live now It's not I but Jesus Christ the grace of Jesus Christ. We say we follow a crucified Christ But then when the cross has presented us, oh, no, I won't want anything to do with that You know what the church will offer you plenty of opportunities to get offended Plenty the Lord is giving you opportunities each and every time Paul said live in harmony with one another Do not be haughty but associate with the lowly and Never be wise in your own eyes James said let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation. He gives more grace Therefore the scripture says

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble in Peter wrote in one of his letters likewise you who are younger be subject to the elders Clothe yourselves all of you with humility toward one another For God opposes the proud but gets grace to the humble that verse keeps coming up And then another place he says humble yourselves Therefore under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you Everything that's not Jesus Jesus take it out of me Peace by peace I've seen bitterness and anger and comparisons and covetousness and defensiveness and pride Ruined so many friendships In hinder churches I Want Jesus to take these from me until there's only him left Lord take them and then shut the door Young man young lady This is a powerful church and where there are powerful churches They're gonna be powerful young people rise up You're gonna do great things But I oftentimes see someone with great

potential Get ruined on the rocks of pride In their 20s and 30s when they taste success This is especially true of young men if you're a young man hear me carefully The moment that you perceive yourself to be successful is the moment you stop growing emotionally So you're 25 years old and you're famous already Maybe you've got a big media social media following so what by the time you're 40 if you keep living in that kind of pride And you think that's important You're not gonna have grown one little bit and when people talk to you when you're 40 They're gonna feel like they're talking to a 13 year old grow Grow in grace in humility coming to a close There's joy in humility you remember what the scripture says at the end says The one seated upon the throne is there and there are 24 elders They're clothed in white raiment and they wear crowns upon their heads But what do they

do with the crowns at the end of the song of the four beasts? They cast their crowns before the Lord and they cry Blessing and glory and honor you can hear the joy The joy of heaven is in taking the crown off and throwing it at the throne of God Take your crown off now and cast it before the throne of God and Then your heart sings the currency of heaven is humility In humility there's true joy the delight of God being my everything Learn from me Jesus says learn from me the one who's most affected by this teaching tonight It's the one who's already humble the one least affected by it Is proud I taught at a school in Virginia and The vice president of the school asked me one day. I was I was teaching English and also running tutoring center and If the the vice president asked me to gather statistics of the correlation between student using the tutoring services

and their success their their GPA and I and I got it all together, but I already had an intuition what I was going to come up with and and it was It was fairly close in the intuition was pretty good. It was this The people who needed the writing center and the tutoring services the most Used at the least the people who used those services the most needed at the least It's one of those paradoxes You can hear clear as a bell from scripture humble yourself But if pride is in the way, it's blocking all of this and making it seem unnecessary Or maybe you're thinking I'm glad my wife's hearing this right now. Let me tell you something in all seriousness I'm talking to somebody Drop it Drop it you need to drop something tonight There's somebody you need to repent to somebody you need to forgive You need to do it tonight. There's a phone call. You need to make it's

getting late I'll try to get you out of here quick, but you need to make a phone call When I'm open up the altar Don't worry about what people might think he was talking to me don't worry about that at all Humility is a great prize Find a place to pray on your knees and ask God to help you and to forgive you and to give you humility Whatever the cost Make me humble like Jesus Don't I don't want to make myself humble I can't do it because you know what when I when I try to make myself humble And I do all of the work I get to the end of it and I say well I'm humble and then proud I'm proud, you know See you get you get caught in that snag right there, but when God does it it's surgical It's surgical so good. God God direct my life in such a way in such a way That I

get the lessons that I can bear and carry the burdens that I can bear and I'm not tempted above what I'm able, but Lord take me there where I need to be I need I can be I can be forged a new Make me new another thing Stop comparing yourself to other people The Apostle Paul said we don't dare classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are not commending themselves In other words when you see somebody fallen you see somebody in sin Be careful. You're in danger Because you might look at them and say I'm glad that's not me. I I'm I That that's that's not in my nature Take heed lest you fall Don't compare yourself don't compare yourself. You don't have enough intuition You don't have enough wisdom to really give a good comparison of yourself. You have no idea where that person's destiny lies You have no idea. You might not even know where they're coming from or

what they're up against You have no idea. I remember one time I made I made I made a comparison. It's the most prominent example of it in my mind It's it's it's one of the one of the occupational hazards being a preacher Is that you I have to share stories embarrassing stories about yourself because you don't want to embarrass other people And here's one of those embarrassing stories. I went my family and I about 15 years ago We moved to another state and we were looking for a church to attend and I went to a church It was on an inner city and I was looking forward to it I finally found thought I found the right place I want to raise my kids in this and they can be become servants and serve this particular city and And the pastor preached and it was great and wonderful and I I walked out of the out of the service And we were on

cloud 9 we'd finally found a church home and Then came back the next week and the pastor wasn't there and somebody filled in for him the assistant pastor And this is very mild-looking man But all of a sudden he took the microphone and started screaming his head off I mean screaming and he was up standing up on top of the pulpit after a few minutes He was running on the back of the pews and the veins were sticking out of his neck And he had one just going right through his forehead I thought it's gonna burst any second just right on us And I didn't understand anything he was saying and my wife was sitting next to me and she started to sob And I thought I had measured this man pretty well. I Was thinking god forgive me What a moron You talk one way the people over here, but when you get in the microphone all of a sudden you have

a different voice I was making all of these kinds of pot shots in my in my mind Ten years later. I had already moved out of the area and then moved back into the area And I went to attend another place He was the assistant pastor there now, but this time I wasn't gonna move. I wasn't gonna wasn't gonna do that Learned a little bit. I had hoped and And I became good close friends with him and I've told him all of this He's the meekest mildest Most wonderful human being I have ever met in my entire life. There's nobody that is more Christian than that man Nobody, but I couldn't see it. I couldn't see it back. I couldn't see it then. I saw all I saw I didn't even I didn't know I didn't know that's how he was taught to preach. He didn't know any other way to preach That's what he did But outside the pulpit He was angelic

It was wonderful and then I saw his preaching in a whole new light and I appreciated all of that demonstrativeness That what was happening there? You see this was a man. I was sitting here in judgment of I Wasn't worthy to unloose his shoe strings Don't compare yourselves to people. You have no idea what you're doing. Don't do it. Don't do it Lies in humility before God and man How great is God? How small am I? You will find here and you're humbling a deep and secret spring of grace that will nourish your soul for the rest of your life Until you're humbled before God your prayers will always feel like monologues Lines recited by an actor But even if your prayers and songs don't seem to rise up from within you don't stop saying them Don't stop singing those songs But instead when the prayers and songs seem so much loftier than your heart is feeling Take this as a lesson in

humility an indication that you need to go lower The sinful public and sorrow for his life lowered himself in prayer and asked be merciful to me a sinner And the one who asked for mercy knows that he lives above what he deserves Make this your the posture of your whole heart and it will give life to every prayer you utter and When the word or song seems too lofty for you again seek humility and Taste the sweetness of the prayers of Jesus and the prayers of King David Nothing is wasted on a humble heart nothing Jesus name Jesus name Jesus name God May the carriers of this gospel truth that we apostolic bear We have too holy and too true of a message To ruin it with pride We are stewards of this mystery make be humble Jesus make us humble and true bearers of This gospel my prayer for you now you need to pray Would you come and find a place

to pray? And seek the Lord earnestly earnestly rid me of all pride
