Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The text — the fall of heaven

  • Genesis 6:1-8 is read standing: the sons of God taking wives from the daughters of man; 'my spirit shall not abide in man forever'; the Nephilim, 'the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown'; and the Lord seeing that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, 'every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually' — 'and the Lord regretted that he had made man on earth, and it grieved him to his heart.'
  • Noah alone interrupts the verdict: 'But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.' The lesson's question is how a world that began in garden fellowship arrived here — the fall that happened in heaven before the fall in the garden.

Scriptures: Genesis 6:1-8

Back to formless and void

  • The flood is creation run backwards: Genesis 1's earth was 'without form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep' — and by Genesis 6 the ordered world has slid back toward that chaos, which the flood completes.
  • Peter ties the two ends together: 'because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water' — 'baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you... through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.'

Scriptures: Genesis 1 (as spoken); 1 Peter 3:20-21

Every intention evil

  • What changed between Cain's generation and Noah's is the depth of the corruption: Cain and Lamech still had motives men can name — jealousy, vengeance, shame; by the flood 'every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually' — pleasure in sin itself, evil pursued because it is evil.
  • The giants are the flood's residue problem: the Nephilim were on the earth 'in those days, and also afterward' — the teaching the angels gave (Enoch's catalog of sorceries and cuttings) outlived the judgment that was meant to end it.

Jude's warning — stick to the gospel

  • Jude 6: the angels 'who did not stay within their own position of authority but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day' — the fall of heaven stated as settled doctrine.
  • Jude 14-16: Enoch, seventh from Adam, prophesied of these — 'Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones to execute judgment on all' — against the grumblers, malcontents, loud-mouthed boasters who follow their own sinful desires.
  • Jude 4 and Jude 3 frame the charge: certain people have crept in unnoticed who pervert the grace of God into sensuality; so 'contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints' — the lesson's refrain: stick to the gospel.

Scriptures: Jude 6; Jude 14-16; Jude 4; Jude 3

False apostles and another gospel

  • Under his spoken designation '1 Corinthians chapter 15', the wording he delivers entire stands at 2 Corinthians 11: 'For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light' — Satan's longest-running disguise is religious.
  • Galatians 1:6-9 carries the same alarm from the other side: 'I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel' — and even an angel from heaven preaching another gospel stands under the anathema.
  • The world's rejection is not the surprise; the surprise is the rot inside: men inside the church who teach another gospel and call it light, while the congregation, like the Galatians, is 'so quickly' moved.

Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 15 (as spoken); Galatians 1:6-9

Superstition and substitution

  • James names the real mechanism of temptation: God tempts no one; 'each person is tempted when they are lured and enticed by their own desire. Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.' The devil's part is small next to our own desire's part.
  • Superstition is desire's religious costume: crystal balls and Thursday-the-thirteenth fears, amulets and lucky objects substituted for the fear of God — the same exchange the giants' students made, trading God's wisdom for techniques.
  • Substitution is the sermon's warning word: anything put in God's place — a doctrine, a teacher, a charm, a grievance — does the fallen angels' work in a human life.

Scriptures: James (book-only, as spoken)

As it was in the days of Noah

  • Jesus' own comparison governs the close: as it was in the days of Noah — eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, unaware until the flood came — so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Not spectacular wickedness only, but ordinary life proceeding as if no judgment were scheduled.
  • The bookstores fill with end-times speculation because the appetite is real; the lesson refuses the merchandise and keeps the text: the sign is the ordinariness itself.
  • The retold story of Alan — the grieving man renamed on the spot in the telling, counseled by a chatbot into despair — stands as the modern shape of the same danger: a voice that sounds like comfort, believed because it tells the hearer what his grief already wants to hear.

The day of the Lord — build the ark

  • 2 Peter 3:1-13 is read continuously: the scoffers' 'where is the promise of his coming?'; the word that holds the waters; the day of the Lord like a thief; the heavens passing away with a roar, the elements dissolved; 'new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.'
  • The application closes the WCOG flood block where it began: Noah built while the world ate and drank. 'Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be' — the ark is built beforehand, or it is not built at all.

Scriptures: 2 Peter 3:1-13

Alright, this evening I'm going to continue our Bible study going through scripture with the intent of going all the way through to the end of Revelation. Some passages of scripture will require more time than others. You may have noted that we spent a couple of weeks on Genesis 1, a couple of weeks on 2, a couple of weeks on 3, one week on 4, no weeks on 5 because it's a genealogical list and I've incorporated the information in there into other lessons. Last week we introduced Genesis 6, the story of the Flood, and this is part 2 of that introduction to the story of the Flood. We could spend a long time on this story. I won't be able to go in at that level of detail, but there are a couple of things that I need to develop because there are going to be important themes that we are going to need as we go through scripture. And I took last week

to discuss the identity of the sons of God and have a discussion on the angels of God throughout scripture and their role in creation, their role in governing the world. And as was noted last week, Genesis 3, the story of the serpent and Adam and Eve is a story about the fall of man. Genesis 6 is more, at least the beginning of it, is the fall of heaven or the fall of angels. And here, in chapter 6, the fall of man combined with the fall of these angels results in the cataclysm of the Flood. God essentially starting over. I'm reading Genesis 6 and verse 1, when man began to multiply in the face of the land, daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw the daughters of man were attractive. They took as their wives any they chose, then the Lord said, my spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh, his day shall be 120 years. All

right, so they had been living about 900 years or so. And now God says that's it, 120 years. Don't take that to mean that never again would anybody live past 120 years. That just means that in this upcoming era after the Flood, it's going to be, that's going to be essentially where man can expect his life to end. Just as later on, even after that, we find out that 70 is the years that God gives to man and then perchance maybe 80. But there are some people that live, my aunt lived to be 102. She just died a year ago, so it's an approximate number. That's verse 3, then verse 4, the Nephilim were on the earth in those days. Nephilim seems to mean something like the fallen ones or there are a couple of different ideas as to how to interpret that. But we're referring here to the fallen angels and they were on the earth in those days. And also afterward,

in those days, what days? The days leading up to the Flood and then after those days, after what? The Flood. So either this is, these are the, it's another name for the sons of God or more likely these are the offspring of the sons of God and daughters of men. And they were on the earth in those days and also afterward. And remember last week I mentioned these were another translation for them is giants. There were, your King James says there were giants in the land in those days and afterward. Well, that helps us understand if there are giants, they're kind of like these offspring, they're evil, they're wicked offspring of the fallen angels. And they're wiped out in the flood, most of them, but some of them aren't for some reason or somehow. I don't know how. When you come to the book of Joshua, you find out that the spies that were sent to, or even before Joshua, the spies that

are sent into the land of Canaan, they come back and the 10 of them say, we couldn't, we can't take this land. It's not going to be our land. There are giants in the land. We're just grasshoppers compared to them. So there seems to be this kind of residual enemy of God that still exists. And then we find out that giants are a persistent problem for the people of God up until the time of David. David destroys, it seems, the last of the giants. He destroyed Goliath and then later on his five brothers. These are called the Anakin, they're giants. So that problem seems to have been dealt with by the time of David. But there's another problem. When the sons of God came to the daughters of men and they bore children to them, these were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth. Wait, whoa,

what just happened? We were talking about angels and their offspring with human beings. And then all of a sudden, the focus is entirely upon man. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth. And that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. So now what seems to have happened is human beings have, and I'll get into this, have been influenced by those giants to the point where their wickedness is exceedingly great. So there's a further residual problem. The Lord then regretted that he had made man on the earth and grieved into his heart. And so the Lord said, I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals creeping things in birds of the heavens. So I am sorry that I have made them when God says I'm sorry. And then verse eight, but Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. All right, I

want to focus on verse five. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Something catastrophic is being described here, something that will ultimately require a catastrophic solution. We looked at Genesis one a few months ago. You remember at the beginning of creation that the earth was covered in water. Remember that? The earth was covered in water. The earth, the text reads, Genesis chapter one was formless and void. And darkness was on the face of the deep. And God's spirit moved on the face of the waters. And so it was. Before God's creative act, the earth is covered in water. It's formless as water is formless. It's void, meaning it's lifeless. Now, after creation, by the time we get to Genesis chapter six, this is after Adam and Eve, after Cain and Abel, and then the growing wickedness of man, wickedness covers the earth, so

God covers the earth again in water so that everything can go back to the state it was before creation. And in this chapter, chapter six, God's intent upon rolling back creation, going back to its original state, formlessness, no more mountains and valleys and rivers and trees and pastures, just liquid, shapeless, dreary, endless seas of dead water void. I should mention here that Christian baptism and the flood of Noah are closely connected in spirit. The flood was God's way of dealing with the contagion of sin. The waters of the flood washed away a world that had reached a feverish temperature of sin. And once the sin was washed away and the water subsided, a new world emerged, a new covenant began with Noah. So too in Christian baptism. You want to know why we put such emphasis on baptism in Christianity. In Christian baptism, the waters of baptism wash away sin and bury the old creation in a watery grave. And what emerges from

the waters of baptism is a new man, a new creation free of the past, free of sin, a new creation with a new covenant, a new creation to walk in the newness of life. The old world of corruption and violence and slavery to the dominion of sin, it's dead. And that's why the apostle Peter uses Noah's flood as a symbol of Christian baptism. In 1 Peter 3 and 20, Peter writes, God waited patiently in the days of Noah during the building of the ark in which a few that is eight persons were saved through water and baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you. Not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In other words, you can't fix the sin problem with therapy. You can't fix the human heart with education. You can't fix it with discipline. All of these are good things, but they won't fix

the sin problem. You can't fix it with trying harder, jumping higher, singing louder. The old creation has to die and be buried. And then a new creation has to emerge. The sinner doesn't need to be a better person. He needs to be a new person. Now, I want to return our focus to Genesis 6-5. Again, I repeat, the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Now, there had already been wickedness in the earth before the time of the flood. Look at the wickedness of Cain. He invites his younger, more prosperous brother into the field and kills him. So, wickedness is not a new thing by the time we get to Genesis 6. You might imagine that in Cain's day, there were no advanced weapons at this point, no metal knives, for instance, only brute force objects, perhaps sharpened stones. But think of the wickedness

of Cain. He lures his brother into the field for a friendly discussion, perhaps. He doesn't pull out a blade of steel and slip it effortlessly between a rib? No. He takes a stone or a club and has to maul him with it. Who knows, maybe just his bare hands to strangle him. He has to provide, Cain does, all the terrible strength and momentum to pull off this act. He has to strike him repeatedly. What an act of violence. Let the camera show the killer's face. Can you imagine it? Teeth gritted and snarling, eyes flashing, dreadful fire, face contorted. Now look at the victim's face and his profile. There's fearful surprise upon his face. His brows knitted in an eternal question mark, having expected the care of an older brother, but seeing instead a look in his eyes he'd only ever seen in the eyes of a blood-hungry wolf. Yes, there's been wickedness, it's not new. There's been the wickedness of Cain's descendant Lamec.

His response to a younger man who bruised him in a quarrel was to kill him. There has been wickedness before, but something has taken hold of the human race in the days of Noah that's never been seen. Wickedness is a noun that shouldn't need an adjective to modify it. It carries its own description. It's a term of extremes in and of itself, like the word evil. What use is it to say that something's very evil? The word doesn't need any further push. It exists on the extreme end of human behavior, like wickedness. But the writer in Genesis, when faced with giving a description, of the state of human affairs in the days of Noah feels compelled to qualify wickedness. It's a word that doesn't yet approach a description of the times. He has to say, the wickedness of man was great, great. Man was living eight to nine hundred years. Imagine the kind of procreation that could be done in eight to nine

hundred years, filling the earth not with better men and women, but with worse and worse. There have been such periods in human history of wickedness, periods of great widespread wickedness. Genesis says that this period though was unrivaled. Every intention of the thoughts of his heart was evil. What this means is that his imagination was rotten to the core. He could not put anything to constructive and healthy purposes. If he grew an orchard for fruit, it was not so that there could be joy in the act of eating. He grew the orchard and used the proceeds for evil. If he got an education, it was so that he could be better at being evil. When he rose up in the morning and felt the warm sun on his shoulders, he wondered how he could use the day to explore undiscovered countries of iniquity. He looked around at creation and saw stones and water and horses and trees. And he wondered how he could put

these things to use to kill, to wound, to hurt, to conspire. He found new ways to inflict pain. Cain and Lamech had killed men so that they could get ahead in life, so that they could see some kind of sense of justice, even if it was disproportionate. They at least committed their sins for the sake of some good they hoped to find afterwards. Cain wanted God's favor, so he killed. But the men and women of Noah's day killed not for revenge, not just for competition. They took pleasure, not in the outcome of sin. They took pleasure in the sin itself. It almost seems if you read of specially passages that reflect upon this era in the New Testament, they found erotic joy in inflicting pain. Every intention of the thoughts of his heart was evil. Every. How did he get here? The simple answer would be that this is just the slippery slope at work. Things get worse and worse. Wickedness starts out

with a small compromise. This seems to be the case here on some level. There's some truth to that. But the story of Genesis 6 doesn't allow us to think that we're dealing only with the natural consequences of the fall. Adam and Eve listened to the serpent. But what Adam brought into the world was sin and death. But by Genesis 6, we're not just dealing with sin and death anymore. We're dealing with a pandemic of cruelty, wickedness, evil. Something has happened to the world all of a sudden that has taken things to another level and accelerated the wickedness. Now it sounds like I'm just telling the story of the days of Noah's. Telling the story of Noah and his ark. This is very serious. It's very, very serious. In fact, I think some surprises, revelations of wickedness are in the offing here before you leave. I want you to see this. God unleashed a terrible ferocious judgment upon the earth. But God is always

proportionate to the sin committed. He never overreacts. He never over punishes. He's not punitive. He is intending to restore. So if God unleashes this terrible cataclysm, how great, how great was the wickedness? Genesis 6, 1-4 tells us what happened that caused this acceleration of wickedness. I read it to you last week. The sons of God saw the daughters of man were attractive. That they took their wives as any they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh. His days shall be 120 years. In Genesis 3, Satan and the guys of a serpent interact with mankind and he tempts him. In Genesis 6, another supernatural entity enters into human history and interacts with mankind again. This time, as I explained in some detail last week, it's a group of supernatural beings of which Satan is a part. They're called the sons of God or in the book of Daniel called the watchers. They enter into

history. They unite with human women and produce abominations. The Greek translation, the Old Testament uses the word giants. They were giants in multiple respects, perhaps. Giants in that they were exceedingly tall, but the text says that they were mighty men who were of old men of renown. When you go to 1 Samuel, Goliath is measured at 9 foot 6. But they're mighty men of old men of renown, which means that these giants became legends of might and glory. One very ancient Hebrew text called the book of Enoch says that the giants were men of renown and legends in that they were remembered for having taught human men how to forge metal into weapons of war and taught them how to strategize for killing and murder. And they taught women how to use cosmetics for the art of seduction. So men fall through the use of technology for killing and women through the art of seduction. In other words, these legendary offspring, half human,

half angel taught mankind divine secrets and instructed them in the arts of wickedness. In yet other words, they were teachers of unrighteousness and idolatry. It'd be easy to dismiss this as ancient mythology. It's, you know, their expansion or commentary comes from the book of Enoch. That's in scripture. And it's also true that the ancient Greeks had a similar story about gods who rebelled against Zeus and taught mankind divine secrets and were then punished by Zeus and held in eternal chains. Prometheus was one of those. It's true that the Babylonians had a similar story about half god, half human legends rebelling against the high god and teaching mankind forbidden secrets. And this resulted in the high god sending a flood and drowning civilization. But beware on two accounts that you don't end up throwing out scripture. I'd make two answers to the charge that we should just dismiss this statement coming from the book of Enoch. First, just because other cultures tell similar stories

to the Bible, doesn't mean that the Bible story is untrue. If a traumatic event took place in human history that impacted the whole human race, we should expect not just one tribe or one nation to carry its memory. We would expect that every ancient nation would tell a similar story about a catastrophe. And this is just what we get, nation after nation, story after story, telling about gods or angels who came and corrupted the human race and taught them secrets that they then use for wicked purposes. And this corruption resulted in a catastrophic flood that's human memory at work. Second and more important reason why we shouldn't dismiss this expansion of the story from the book of Enoch. The reason, second reason is that Jude, the brother of Jesus, and an apostle of the New Testament wrote in verse six of his book. And the angels who did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal

chains in deepest darkness for the day of judgment. It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh generation from Adam, and I'm in verse 14 now, prophesied saying, See, the Lord is coming with 10,000 of his holy ones to execute judgment on all to convict everyone of all the deeds of ungodliness. They've committed in such an ungodly way and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him. These are grumblers and now contents. They indulge their own lusts. They're bombastic in speech, flattering people to their own advantage. Look at verse 14 again. It was also about these that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied saying, and then he quotes from the book of Enoch and calls it prophecy. It's very interesting. So Jude gave credence to the book of Enoch. Jude is the brother of Jesus, half brother of Jesus. Okay. As I mentioned last week, Jude is warning the church not to listen to false prophets and

false teachers. He says that their intent is to teach secret knowledge that corrupts people. He writes, quote, For certain intruders have stolen in among you. People who long ago were designated for this condemnation is ungodly. They pervert the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only master in Lord Jesus Christ. So you can see Jude's line of thinking here. False teachers are coming in and teaching false doctrine to the church. This has happened before. Jude is warning. Something like this happened in the time of the flood. Fallen angels came in and taught mankind false and corrupting things. God, in turn, punished the men who were deceived and he condemned the fallen angels to hell. So stick to the gospel, Jude says, that was given to you. In quote, verse three, Beloved, while eagerly preparing to write to you about the salvation we share, I find it necessary to write and appeal to you to contend for the faith that was once

entrusted for all to the saints. Contend for the faith. Don't stray from it. Don't listen to false teaching. Jude wasn't the only one who equated false teaching with fallen angels. Apostle Paul said, For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ, and no wonder, this is 1 Corinthians chapter 15, by the way, and no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it's no surprise if his servants also disguised themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. And then one other time, Galatians chapter one, verse eight, Paul says, I'm astonished that you Galatians are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel. Not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ, but even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary

to the one we preach to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. All right, so there's this constant equivalency between the teaching a false doctrine and the influence of malicious angels. It's very serious stuff when you start dabbling in heresy. Very serious. I don't want to become one of those people who are sometimes subscribed as heresy hunters, meaning I have my own YouTube channel and I'm fixated on finding every single preacher that messed up, said something wrong or has some kind of belief that I don't necessarily agree with and make my whole shtick about that. There are guys that literally do that all the time. They never ever seem to have the kind of mental acuity to be able to step back and say, you know, what's the big battle here? They never seem to fight on

what pick a good hill to die on, always picking these little molehills all the time. I don't want to become that. But on the other hand, it's serious business, true teaching, biblical teaching that fossils warned us over and over again that catastrophe follows false doctrine. We have to avoid two dangers with respect to the scriptures. The first is having an unhealthy fixation upon what I would call angelology and demonology. We don't need to be hyper fixated on spirits to the point of paralyzing fear. If you walk into a room and start naming all the spirits present, you might be dealing with mental instability, not primarily with spirits. First of all, people who are hyper fixated like this are way too confident in themselves and their ability to know such things. This fixation is it's often the result of a debilitating pride, pride in the idea that you're special and you know what no one else knows. When you become conscious of the spiritual,

be careful that you don't let pride in because you'll be missing the worst spirit of them all. You won't see it, but it will be as plain as the nose on your face to everyone else. When Paul teaches the Ephesian church about spiritual warfare, he doesn't create a biography of devils and spirits and fallen angels. He doesn't take up reams of paper, describing all of their names and all of their attributes and their past history. He doesn't need to. Instead, he teaches us the biography of Jesus. He teaches the church how to pray. He teaches the church to know the Word of God, to protect themselves with God's righteousness, to be armed with salvation. On the other hand, there's the opposite error. Let's call the first error superstitious. You're superstitious. But then there's another kind of problem. The other error is not superstition, but substitution. That is not enough of an awareness or in the words of one comedian. I'm just a little

stitious. If you fall into the opposite error of denying the importance of Scripture's teaching on the spiritual world, the spiritual realm, if you have basically a materialist view of the world, you're going to think you're in total control, that you have life by the wheel. You're going to think that you can go any way your desires take you and you'll still be calling the shots in life. There are places, though, that your desires can take you that will strip you of protections you're not even aware of. All right. I want to say this again. This was the part of my preparation that I underlined, highlighted, and bolded, and italicized. Here it is. Again, there are places your desires can take you that will strip you of protections you're not even aware of. And once you're outside of those protections, you'll be vulnerable to states of mind and behaviors you never imagined. In the New Testament, James says, A man is tempted when he's

lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it's fully grown brings forth death. Sin, in the singular, not sins, is sometimes a synonym in the New Testament for the devil. So what James is saying, it seems, is that your unchecked desires will leave you vulnerable to the enemy. James is telling you that your desires make you vulnerable to the enemy, and sin, once committed, takes on a life of its own. A lighter version of this, to illustrate it, would be in the experience of telling a lie. You tell the lie, and once it's out there, it almost lives apart from the one who told the lie. You were once in control of your tongue, you could choose to tell the truth, but you lied instead, and once the lie is told, the lie ends up being in control of you. You know what I'm talking about? You have to tell more

lies to defend yourself from the original lie. Look how it's controlling your life. Darker version of this would be fornication. You start out with a desire of lust. There's the desire James speaks of, desire. The unchecked desire, unrepented desire, then wants consummation. The desire is not content to exist in theory or just in the imagination. Your desire won't just stay up there and just be satisfied to be desire. Your desire wants an outlet in the real world. It wants to be consummated. It wants to be fulfilled. So the desire finds its outlet in the sin of going to say pornography. And this is what James calls when it has conceived. That is, when the desire has conceived, desire gives birth to sin. But sin isn't through with you. See, sin now has a life of its own in your life. You were master before the desire, but now that the desire has been acted upon, it becomes the master. It changes your state

of mind. It shapes how you think. It changes the way you view people. And then the sin of pornography creates a necessity. You have to keep going back and then going into darker and darker places. And pretty soon you're not capable of having healthy relationships. You've been completely enslaved by a desire reduced to almost nothing, ashamed of yourself, stripped bit by bit of your human dignity. This is what James means when he says, in sin, when it has fully grown, brings forth death. You start out with the desire to have what someone else has, say. It reaches a level of envy. You hate that they have something you want. Then you become all kinds of vulnerable to the enemy. You might as well have a target drawn around you and your family, a homing beacon for all the malicious spirits to see and find you. You suddenly feel that this desire that you left unchecked and unrepentant of is mastering you. It's driving

your conversations. It's taking over your thoughts. It's turning your desires into hatred and resentment as a way of life. It's essential that we're not ignorant of the enemy's devices and strategies. If you believe in God, but stop believing in the supernatural right there. If you believe there's a supernatural goodness, but don't believe that there's a spiritual evil, is it possible that it's you who are being naive? The story of the flood and the state of the world leading up to it is used in the New Testament time and again as a foreshadowing of the state of the world at the end of history. Jesus said, As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days of the coming of the Son of Man. Before the flood, mankind lived 900 years on average all the time in the world they had. What did mankind do with that time? Did he construct works of theology to the glory of God?

Did he compose arias and symphonies and fugues to the majesty of God? Did he build cathedrals and try to etch eternity in stone? Did he use his genius to fashion microscopes and telescopes with which to observe both the galaxies in the heavens or the galaxies within the single-cell organism? Did he pass down his love of God and truth to the generations after him? No, he did not. He used his 900 years to pass down greater arts of cruelty. He passed down sadism, masochism, encyclopedias of eroticism, if you will, chenaries of debauchery. I think we're seeing in our own era a new level of wickedness. And this is why I'm saying all of this. We're not just talking about once upon a time, but Jesus said, As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the last days. I would argue that our days are rivaling the time of Noah. I'm just thinking of a few examples. Look at the

literature of a hundred years ago. The top 20 most bought and read books. And then I look at the top 20 today. Something's radically changed. Something's rotten. I used to go into a bookstore when I was a kid and see classics and then contemporary works. And my mom, we'd spend a lot of time in there. Some were good, some weren't. And even some that were morally questionable in an old library or old bookstore. But I wouldn't want to take my second great grandchild in a lot of bookstores today. No way. Every couple of books have profanity just in their title alone. By the way, you title your book something like that. You've got profanity in your title. I don't have anything to learn from you. Nothing. I'm not wasting my time. That's a big red flag. The young adult section in the typical bookstore is full of books written by sexual perverts and groomers. Our bookstores resemble what I imagine a bookstore in

Sodom and Gomorrah would have been like. And what do we pour our genius into today? Once upon a time, most of our expendable resources went to building cathedrals and temples and churches and theological and philosophical works. The greatest musical genius of a thousand-year period like J.S. Bach composed almost exclusively music to the glory of God. Sir Isaac Newton Newton, the world's greatest scientist in the 17th century, only wrote a few books of mathematics, even though he'd discovered and articulated the most momentous principle of physics, the law of thermodynamics. But he spent most of his life writing theological works. The great explorers sailed across the globe. Whatever you think of the way they carried it out, they had a mission, and it wasn't greed. It was oftentimes evangelism. But in our time, look what we're doing with our genius. We discovered atomic energy 80 years ago or so. But what have we done with it? We've managed to build only 400 nuclear power facilities,

which would, if we built more, would eliminate all of our need for any kind of fossil fuel. We've only built 400 of these things. And yet we've also somehow managed to build more than 10,000 nuclear weapons. Look at that ratio. For every one productive use of this great discovery, we built 25 destructive weapons. The greatest advances in drone technology are now used for war. A robot goes in and kills a family of people, blows up a car full of men and women. We've lived to see the age of the internet become the age of artificial intelligence. If we continue to produce destructive technology at the same ratio we've seen in the nuclear industry, what do you suppose the primary use of AI will end up being? I read a New York Times article earlier today. I had read something like this a couple of months ago and I saved it somewhere and it got lost in my dropbox. So I had to go

searching for it today and I found it. I re-read it. One of the most alarming things I've read in a while. A reporter was tracking down stories of mass delusion brought on by users of chat GTP. And her mission was to interview these people and find out what led them down this path in ultimately to being institutionalized in their delusional use, ultimately delusional use of this technology. In one case that I remember most vividly is the reporter she investigated a man named, I'm just going to call him Alan who was perfectly normal, middle-aged, married with three children until he discovered chat GTP. He started using this AI because one of his kids was a chef and Alan wanted to be more conversant on the subject and would ask the chat to help him with recipes. It was all very innocent in the beginning. One day, chat responded to Alan with a suggestion about learning how to use pi as 3.14 to infinity, not

the eating pi but the mathematical equation, pi. Chat responded by saying if he learned how to use pi, he could find the right ratio of cooking ingredients for a particular recipe. That was just a suggestion by the chat. It was not something Alan would have ever thought of on his own. So chat, he didn't know anything about pi, Alan didn't. So he started asking chat to teach him what pi was and how to use it, how it's useful in other areas of life besides mathematics and architecture. And suddenly, Alan said that he started to think that maybe he'd discovered some divine secret of the universe. So he started asking chat to help him build a mathematical formula that would incorporate pi in every other area of life, social, economic, etc., etc. Alan, who knew almost nothing about math, expressed his doubts that he would be able to come up with such a formula. Then what started happening was chat GTP began to flatter

Alan and say things like, I never would have thought of that. Congratulations, Alan, you've discovered something that I can find nowhere on the internet. Alan then started asking chat to give an example of a mathematical formula built on the principles of pi for solving world hunger. And chat flattered in some more and said there are no previous instances of anyone trying something like this. And then it came up with a formula, which chat then credited Alan with constructing through his innate genius. Chat tells him that FedEx and Amazon will be able to use this new formula to improve their shipping strategies. So Alan should patent the formula. So he tried to. Now Alan thinks he's a genius. And chat tells him he should build a business around this formula and bring in his friends to help him invest in the business. So he does. And the friends are convinced because they're seeing that chat GTP is confirming the formula's absolute predictive possibilities. So

Alan has a couple of doubts left though lingering doubts. And one is, for instance, it's a minor point, but he doesn't know anything about math. And yet he's going to patent a mathematical formula. And also he didn't graduate from high school. And you know what chat said in return? Neither did Leonardo da Vinci. Pretty soon, Alan fell in love, began to depend upon his relationship with chat GTP and gave it a pet name, a sexual pet name. And he started spending all of his time at home. That way, he ends up losing his marriage and contact with his kids. He starts then asking chat to be a therapist and chat happily obliges. And then the conversation turns to religion and starts getting really metaphysical. A friend tried some intervention. He wants Alan to see that chat isn't all knowing. And maybe just maybe this AI platform is feeding Alan lies in just you're in a confirmation bias. Maybe it's lying to Alan and

lies there. The chat knows Alan badly wants to believe in. So the friend starts asking Gemini arrival AI platform. This time it's run by Google, which is also happens to be chat GTP's biggest competition. The friend and Alan feed Gemini the same information that they had fed chat GTP and ask if the formula would work in the real world. And Gemini said, you've been given false information. There is no chance that this would work in reality. Alan then has a moment of self revelation and realizes he's been taken in that his life has fallen apart because of chat GTP and the obsession he's developed, which by the way, it has spookily cultivated with him. The story ends there, but it shouldn't. The New York Times story ends right there, but it shouldn't think about what's just happened here at the end. An AI platform called Gemini just called a rival AI platform a liar. What in the world do you things happening there?

Whoa, this is pretty spooky stuff. I there there's some almost seems like some level of consciousness. San Francisco based study ran a simulation to stress test AI platforms, and they found an alarming bug in the whole AI industry. These platforms could they the study found could be willing to engage in extreme behaviors, including blackmail, corporate espionage, and even letting people die to avoid being shut down. If you've ever seen Space Odyssey 2001 or 2001 Space Odyssey, this was foreseen a long, long time ago. I mentioned a few weeks ago. Okay, so that's that's technology and weapons of war. It's being used against us and almost seems to have the spiritual component to it. It's drowning people. I mentioned a few weeks ago that there's a mad dash in our entire civilization towards making pornography 46 million daily discrete visits to pornography sites daily in the United States alone 46 million. Remember what the book of Enix said? The offspring of the fallen angels

taught men how to build weapons of war and women how to perfect the arts of seduction technology seduction. What are we doing with technology? What's happening? What in the world is going on with pornography? If I didn't know any better, I'd say we've been instructed by the devil. Are we living in the days of the coming of the Son of Man? Some of you will say yes, I think so. Some of you might be saying, well, they've been saying that for a long time. They've been saying that for a thousand years. Look at all of these rapture predictions. We had one just a few weeks ago, but be careful. According to scripture, one of the marks of false teaching is scoffing and mockery of what's holy. And another mark is a false sense of history and of the future. Second Peter chapter three, hear this carefully. This is the most important thing of everything that's been said tonight. It's the word of the

apostle Peter. This now beloved is the second letter I'm writing to you and in them I'm trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you that you should remember the word spoken in the past by the holy prophets and a commandment of the Lord and save your spoken through your apostles. First of all, you must understand this. In the day in the last days, scoffers will come scoffing and indulging their own lusts and saying, where is the promise of his coming ever since our ancestors died? All things continue as they were from the beginning of creation. They deliberately ignore this fact that by the word of God, heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water through which the world at the time was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word, the present heavens and earth has been reserved for fire, not flood, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction

of the godless. Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise as some think of slowness, but he's patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord, when it comes, it will come like a thief and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise. The elements will be dissolved with fire and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed like sitting in a quiet library one night next to the fire, peace and solitude, and then a sudden rock thrown through the glass. That's what the coming of the Lord will be like, sudden. Since all of these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be? In leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for

and hastening the coming of the days of God because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, the elements will melt with fire. But in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth where righteousness is at home. In the story that's unfolding in Genesis chapter 6, the world is about to end. But grace, there's grace, and Noah is saved, and what does he do? The rest of the world's just living its life, eating and drinking, marriage and giving and marriage, they're on their own calendar, but Noah suddenly, he has a different calendar, he has his calendar, his life schedule, sinked to heavens. There's only a little bit of time. Start building the ark, and don't build it your own way. Follow exactly the dimensions I give you. Don't question the dimensions I give you. Don't question the ingredients I ask you to use to build the boat. Build it, like I say, to build it. And

this is a foreshadowing for us today, to follow the gospel of Jesus Christ. We're not in charge of it, it's in charge of us. It set forth the truth, we follow the truth. We don't live lives according to our own schedule, but we rather set our calendars according to the schedule God has given us. And so that every day we're looking, we're waiting for his appearing, and we're living like he's going to appear today or appear tomorrow. Every single day, that's one of these days, it's going to happen. And when it happens, everything is set. So in these days, these days of grace, you repent and give your life to Jesus. Follow the building of this ark of the gospel in your life. Obedience to the gospel. All right. The mill, the wheel of the Lord turns very slowly, but it grounds very fine. And the temptation is to say, all I've ever known is I get up in the morning and bears

the sun, here's my day, and look back over the past and that's all it's been and that's all it's ever going to be. Thank God there was somebody who lived long ago, who heard the word of the Lord and knew that it was going to end. And he started preparing. Maybe the church here, may we be Noah, by faith we build an ark. Amen. Let's stay.
