Summary
- A single-voice conference sermon by a Panama missionary on what made Jesus, and then Paul, effective: not position or prerogative, but an anointing received and a Spirit obeyed — a man willingly driven by the Spirit he carries. He opens his text in Luke, traces the pattern through Jesus' anointing and Paul's constraint, testifies to his own three days of resisting the prayer he knew he needed, and closes by leading the house into Simeon's embrace of the anointing, in a long prophetic-praise movement.
- **The text: the Spirit of the Lord is upon me** After leading the house in praise, he directs them to Luke chapter 4 and reads the Nazareth text aloud: the Spirit of the Lord upon him, anointed to preach the gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, liberty to the bruised, and the acceptable year of the Lord. He takes his thought from the reading itself — Spirit driven.
- **Jesus the model: anointed, then driven** Jesus is presented first in the humblest of circumstances — and, in his deity, truly God — yet as a man he limited himself to the restrictions common to our nature, experienced hunger, tiredness, pain and temptation, and succeeded not merely because he was God in the flesh but because he was a man willingly submitted to the Divinity that inhabited him. Approved for public ministry, he was anointed with the oil of gladness; at Jordan he was set apart, and after that anointing the Spirit became the driving force of his ministry — driven into the forefront of spiritual warfare, yet willingly led. The same driving is what believers pray for when they ask the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers: God drives men and women into the harvest.
- **Things driven, or Spirit driven** The danger is a counterfeit driving: the things that are seen, the material world, applause, titles, popularity, competition, money and power can all become the driving force of a life and dull the honed edge of the Spirit. Against it stands the demon-possessed man of the Gospel account — whatever possesses a person will drive them — and the altar, where flesh is burned: the fat of the sin offering upon the altar, and an anointing that does not come upon flesh but upon the spirit of the man, passing through the filter of prayer. Ministry without prayer produces an Ishmael church, more flesh than Spirit.
- **Paul's passion and press** Paul is the sermon's second pattern: a man seized and held hostage by God on the Damascus road who, thirty years later, writing from a Roman prison, is still pressing on to lay hold of that for which Christ laid hold of him. Years before the Philippian letter he had declared himself bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that would befall him there; earlier still, in Corinth, he was pressed in the spirit, testifying that Jesus was Christ, and later wrote of that pressing in the Corinthian letter as the love of Christ constraining. Compressed, that love focuses a life the way compressed light becomes a laser: none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, that I might finish my course with joy.
- **The preacher's own three days** He testifies against himself: three weeks before, dragging, knowing he needed to pray through, and refusing precisely because his wife told him to — three days of her steady word, until, when she used his full name, he got up off the bed, went to the front room, and got hold of the glory cloud of the anointing again. Pride is what holds hearers back tonight from the same prayer.
- **Simeon: seeing, then embracing** After four hundred years of prophetic silence, Simeon was impelled by the spirit into the temple — promised only that he would see the Lord's anointed. But Spirit-driven people do not merely see the anointing; they embrace it, as Simeon drew the child to his breast and placed him near his heart. The wise man's word is invoked for the hour: there is a time to embrace. The sermon closes in that act — the house standing, reaching, prophesying as they praise — a long prophetic-praise movement in the preacher's own voice to the final word.

welcomeing let's clap our hands unto the Lord tonight for he is worthy to be praised thank you Jesus you may be seated let's open our Bibles to Luke 4: 18 and while you're doing so let me say that it's indeed an honor to be here I give honor to brother Anthony Mangan brother GA Mangan brother t Brother Bruce Howell Harry sisom my pastors brother James and Jim Kilgore all of the missionaries who are present here tonight glor hallelujah hallu it's better better in Spanish Let Me Tell You amen Luke 4:18 the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he hath anointed me to pre preach the gospel to the poor he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted to preach Deliverance to the captives and recovering of the of sight to the blind to set at Liberty them that are bruised to preach the acceptable year of the Lord amen I want to talk to you for a few moments this evening on the thought Spirit driven you may be seated Spirit driven Hallelujah born in the most humble condition s under the shadow of illegitimacy native of one of the most despised cities in Israel a member of a family of modest recourses the son of a workingclass father unimpressive in his physical appearance born without the Privileges afforded the rich and the advantages of blood and title that would automatically promote his career in an upward spiral of success Jesus of Nazareth impacted not only his own generation but every human being that has lived on the face of planet Earth for no other life has influenced more people than that unique and singular life of the superlative savior being that Jesus is God manifested In the Flesh it is easy to think that he would he would enjoy all of the advantages afforded that position and that this alone would make him successful in are every area of his life however in actuality we see that Jesus Is God living in and revealed through a tabernacle of Flesh identical to our own and even though in reference to his deity he truly is the Father the Bible clearly states that he emptied himself of his Divine prerogatives while dwelling among men and made himself of no reputation taking no advantage of his legitimate rights of deity those that were rightfully his to use at his disposal but rather he Limited himself to the restrictions common to our nature and as a man he experienced all of the weaknesses that hold man hostage hunger bodily tiredness pain suffering and even Temptation if this be true Jesus was not successful only because he was God manifested In the Flesh but rather because he was a man that was willingly submitted to the Divinity that inhabited him and if this be so seeing that Jesus is our model and pattern for our spiritual lives and is indeed the Prototype that mirrors true Ministry for all those that would follow him we see that in the days of his flesh although that he had the spirit without measure God would place his approval upon the man Christ Jesus and designate him for public Ministry by anointing him with the oil of gladness above his fellows for on Jordan's Banks he who is the visible expression of the invisible Spirit was overshadowed by a visible manifestation of his own spirit for the purpose of being set apart for Ministry he who was David's root and Offspring was anointed just as David of whom it is is stated so Samuel took the Horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers and from that day on the spirit of the Lord came upon David in
power and it is this typical anointing which allows David's son the right to minister in power for the Bible states God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil for God was with him after this initial anointing on Jordan's Banks John states that Jesus was full of the spirit not in the sense that we normally understand but rather as an indication that he is now anointed and commissioned to operate fully and without limitations in his ministry anointing has opened the door for the fullness of expression of a Ministry that here too was latent but now is ready for full manifestation now he could stand and with an assurance declare the spirit of the Lord is upon me for he he hath anointed me as God he had the spirit without measure but as a man he declares that the spirit moving upon Him is the direct result of the anointing that he has just received hi to there is no Ministry no Miracles no manifestation but now the spirit becomes the driving force which passionately propels the master to fulfill his destiny and purpose for existence immediately after his anointing Mark says the spirit driveth him now he is driven as the Greek indicates he is thrust out he is cast forth by the spirit the same Greek word is used by Mark in relation to casting or driving out demons and driving out the money changers from the temple which only demonstrates to us the powerful compelling force of the spirit's work in our our lives at the same time Matthew states he is led up of the spirit which proclaims his voluntary submission to the spirit so he is driven though not against his will into the Forefront of spiritual warfare he can only be cast forth because he is willingly led up all right the same Greek word is used by Jesus when he says pray ye therefore the Lord of the Harvest that he sent forth laborers into his Harvest so when we are praying for Laborers to be sent forth we are really praying for God to push them for God to drive them for God to draw them out with violence Hall we're not praying some little old prayer God sends some guys out to preach we are praying that God's holy spirit will literally Drive men and women into the Harvest God wants to drive people into the Harvest just like he drove the money changers out of the temple I'm not against somebody taking a church but if the spirit drives you you won't be waiting around for a church to come open when there are hundreds of unchurched cities in North America you might not like that but it's the truth anyway honey we are to be willingly driven by the spirit God give us Spirit driven men and spirit driven women the anointing is in this place tonight to convert US into driven people driven with a purpose I feel the Holy Ghost right now in the house driven with a consuming passion driven with a burden you need anointing for Ministry because anointing coupled with willing submission will cause the spirit to drive you to go forth and Minister even in the face of severe crisis and Temptation listen to me it is so easy to allow negative influences to drive us in Deuteronomy 4:19 God warned the Israelites against being driven to worship those things that are seen rather than the true God in the Hebrew the word driven seems to imply an inner drivenness or drawing away as well as an external Force it's so easy to become things driven rather than Spirit driven God was explicit because he knew that whatever we worship is what we serve we can worship at the altar of this material world with all of its obvious benefits until it becomes the driving force in our lives or we can be driven
to worship the the the only true God we can worship at the altar of the material world or we can be driven to worship only the Lord God hallelujah there Comes A Time In Our Lives as ministers when we are blessed and I am not against God blessing his man but if we are not careful we can lose that fine tuned honed edge of the spirit which has driven us on for years and has brought us to where we are tonight in Ministry we can become things driven instead of spirit driven oh God some of us are driven by the Applause of men others by titles and positions others by popularity some are driven by competition others by money others steal by an insatiable desire for power but Jesus but Jesus who is our example is Spirit driven I wish somebody here tonight would allow the Holy Ghost to consume you what is the driving force your life what is indeed your passion in Luke 8:29 we read the account of a demon-possessed man who was driven of the devil Into the Wilderness the Bible says may I say that whatever possesses you will drive you whatever possesses you will become the driving factor in your life whatever possesses you gives you life Direction some of us need to become Spirit possessed we need to become Spirit driven if you get Spirit possessed tonight it will drive you into the very Forefront of spiritual conflict honey you won't be hanging back on some Pew somewhere you'll be standing up with the power and the anointing of the Holy Ghost I'm going preach this hallu Hallelujah I didn't know if this was God's will I know it's God will now to drive is to impart forward motion to compel to urge or press into activity course or direction for example the powder drives the bullet forward toward its Mark the force with which an object is projected forward is in direct relation to the power behind it no wonder some folks don't have much spiritual momentum they're driven by flesh Leviticus 16 25 says and the fat of the sin offering shall be burnt upon the altar I want to tell you something flesh is burn up at the altar why don't you just get yourself to an altar tonight oh we need to burn some flesh we don't have an altar big enough we can burn it right where we're at can raise up a church to do a work for God In the Flesh just like you can do it in the spirit God's word will not return void the gifts and calling of God are without repentance a minister who approaches the pull pit without prayer will feel the anointing maybe not in the same measure as one who has prayed but he still feels the anointing because we all have anointing and we all are anointed for Ministry God does not anoint flesh he anoints the spirit of man concerning the anointing the the Bible declares upon man's flesh it shall not be poured the anointing does not come upon carnality it does not come upon flesh but upon the spirit of the man who brings the message but the anointed Spirit of man must pass through the filter of the flesh if a person who is ministering in some capacity does not pray the flesh has the advantage because his Spirit has lost the anointing due to lack of prayer anointing is felt through his words but there's more flesh than there is spirit and this is why the message touches the Flesh of The Listener more than is Spirit this is why we see so many conversions that are more the product of a fleshly Ministry than they are of the spirit Abraham and Sarah received a promise 25 years pass without the promise being fulfilled they sought a solution in the flesh and they produced an Ishmael Ishmael represents the flesh but he still has a blessing from God God can even bless the
flesh he shall also be a great nation but he is carnal when we work without personal prayer we produce an Ishmael church we produce a church with more flesh than the move of the Holy Ghost and I don't know about you honey but I believe in the move of the Holy Ghost I'm not to back down on the manifestation of the Holy Ghost it's not my might nor yet by power but it's by my spirit Listen to Me Maybe This is why Paul did so much for the Lord maybe this is what he meant when he said not that I have already obtained all of this or have already been made perfect but I press on to to take hold of that which Christ Jesus Took hold of me Paul was saying don't get me wrong I'm not batting a thousand I haven't arrived don't think that I have accomplished all that I should have accomplished but I keep on pressing I keep on striving whereas the Greek word indicates I pursue as one pursues a deer in the hunt or a man who presses on in the race so that I might grasp that for which Christ grasped me so that I might overtake and lay hold on that for which I was taken captive by Christ on the Damascus Road Paul was seized y he was captured held hostaged by God for Divine Purpose his conversion was the beginning not the end of the Chase and now over a span of 30 years 30 years later he writes from a Roman prison and he says the spirit is still driving me on I'm still chasing the Fulfillment of the dream I feel the spirit taking hold of someone here in this building tonight I feel the spirit seizing someone capturing someone surrender I say unto the surrender tonight to the spirit's influence let him take you hostage again let the spirit grasp your mind let it grasp your heart let it grasp your soul let it grasp your spirit once again and then when he grasp you reach out in the spirit and grasp the one who has grasped you seize the one who has seized you C capure the one who has captured you approximately 58 ad 6 years before the Philippian letter Paul says and now behold I go Bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem not knowing the things that shall befall me there many commentaries have observed that Paul did not go Bound in his human Spirit but rather his human Spirit went Bound by the influence of the Holy Spirit one trans ation says it this way I go drawn without power to resist the Holy Spirit and another says I go compelled by the spirit Paul was bound in the spirit he was compelled by his convictions he is Spirit driven even though he knows that this eventually entails trials and tribulations approximately 8 years earlier in Acts 185 the Bible says that while in Corinth Paul was pressed in the spirit he testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ the Greek word for pressed means compelled compressed constrained by the spirit all of his ministerial life Paul was a spirit-driven man later he would write that about that pressing experience in the Corinthian letter stating the love of Christ constrain us a phrase that has been translated this way the love of God compresses all of our energies in One Direction it's like gunpowder loose it has little power but compressed it has explosive power diffused light has little power but compressed light or focused light can become a laser that can cut through through steel like knife cutting through butter I don't know what's in your future but I'm sure that there is Temptation there is sickness there is loss there is rejection there is weakness there is loneliness and spiritual battles and perhaps even a personal Calvary await many of us in this building here tonight but if our Spirits are driven by this Spirit we can say as Paul said but none of these things move me neither count I my life dear unto myself that I might finish my course with joy God's love which is shed abroad by the power of the Holy Spirit has the capacity tonight to compress our energies in One Direction tonight the love of God can focus our faith the love of God can focus our worship Focus faith can produce a powerful move of the holy
spirit in this place tonight Focus worship can produce a powerful earthshaking move of God in this building tonight oh the effectiveness of Paul's Ministry stems from the fact that he is driven by one thing the spirit pressed him towards one goal the preaching of the gospel the people who are the most effective in their service to the Lord are those whose lives are controlled by an overwhelming passion those who have been able to Channel all of their energies in One Direction without sidetracking somewhere and opening up business is all kind of junk all right God called us to preach honey I said God called us to preach we better preach well it's quiet I must have stepped on somebody's toe I said God called us to preach he didn't call us to play he didn't call us to become businessmen he called us to preach the unadulterated word of God with authority and power somebody came here without Focus but my God I feel in the Holy Ghost that somebody's going to leave this building tonight with a fresh focus on deity put your hands together and give God praise oh hu H I'm I'm preaching preaching what's in my heart tonight I wish I could have got that sermon and pull it out to push that button that I wanted to push but brother Anthony I could not get that message out I prayed today I just could not pull that one out that I knew was going to make everybody jump and Shout but somehow I just feel I'm in the Holy Ghost I feel I'm talking in the Holy Ghost here tonight I feel an assurance of God I feel an assurance of God I'm not trying to duplicate anything last year I'm just trying for somebody to walk out of this building tonight saying I want to be a man of God I want to be a woman of God I want to be focused in my life I want to be focused in my Ministry nothing else counts but Jesus nothing else counts but him that's why we're here on the face of this earth that is our destiny to be Spirit driven listen to me for about five more minutes after after 400 years of prophetic silence Simeon came to the temple moved by the spirit where as one translation says he was impelled by the spirit to get there for 400 years the spirit was looking for a man he could move the spirit was looking for a man with a passion for a man whose lifelong singular goal was to see the Fulfillment of a promise from God in his life he would not die until yet seen the Lord's anointed suddenly the spirit impels him and says Simeon it's time to go to church boy I'm fixing to show you what you've been waiting to see for a long time the spirit moves on him it drives him and impels him into the temple notice that he was not only promised that he would see the anointed that's the only promise got you're going to see the anointed one it would be enough to see the anointing but spirit-driven people not only see it they get to embrace the anointing because you see God always performs more than he promises not only does he let us see the anointing and my God that's a lovely sight to see it on somebody else I love to see these men anointed I love to see you anointed worshiping God that's a lovely sight to see the anointing expressing itself in somebody else's life but honey I didn't come to because of the times to sit back and only be blessed by seeing you be blessed I came to be cause of the times because something is driving me down inside I want I want to get a hold of the anointing of God for myself I don't want any secondhand anointing honey I want firsthand anointing did you hear me I don't want any secondhand anointing I want firsthand
anointing from God I don't want to be like Saul have to call David to come and sing The Devils off me honey that's what's wrong with some of us we want somebody to lay hands on us and pray for us and push us and pull us and pump us and Prime us and pray us back through we want somebody to come and sing our own song speak in tongues for us feel the anointing for us I want to tell you what you need to learn how to touch God for yourself and that includes men of God you say I know how to touch God I'm going to tell you something I'm going tell them myself and I hope nobody thinks I'm backl what about three weeks ago I was dragging I mean Dragon that's the guy's preaching because the times I was Dragon I thought man and I I you know it's great to have a wonderful wife she looked at me she said John you need to pray through Hallelujah I said I know I need to pray through honey but I'm not going to do it because you tell me to do it you may know what I'm talking about you don't like Mama to tell you nothing you don't like Mama to come up and tell you you ain't preaching good you ain't preaching right and you ain't counseling right and you ain't you don't like Mama to come and say you need to pray through boy I drug on for about three days I want to tell you what I knew what I needed to do but I wasn't going to do what I needed to do because I was carnal and some of you know what you need to do tonight my God some of you know what you need to do tonight but pride is holding you back from we need to cast the spirit of Pride out of this building right now in the name of Jesus sh I'm going to tell you I told my wife I said honey I said I don't know what I'm going to do she said you need to pray through John three days in a row she looked at me right in the eye and she didn't she didn't budge she didn't Shake she looked sister AR you looked me in the eyes she said boy you need to get down there in that front room you need to get back to church go to church get on your knees and pray through I know none of y'all never need to pray through I'm the only one that it's carinal around here I'm just trying to be transparent for a moment you think I'm back s that's up to you I know some of y'all just the same way the third night she looked at me she said you need to pray through John Hopkins and when she said John Hopkins I knew honey she meant what she was talking about when she said John it was all right but when she said John Hopkins Bubba you better pray through I knew I needed to pray through I said I'm I know I need to pray through but I'm not going to pray through because you told me to I laid down on that bed and I started going back and forth and God kept talking to me and she kept what her words kept going over to my mind and I said I got to get up up and pray I got up off that bed I went down to the front room and oh God I got a hold of the glory cloud of the anointing of almighty God on my life you can say I backslid if you want to honey but I'm just telling you something out of my life I want to tell you something there's some folks here that you're walking in the flesh you're talking in the flesh you're preaching in the flesh you've got to get a fresh anointing from almighty God in this building tonight and not because I'm telling you to you've got to be Spirit driven you've got to want it with all of your heart oh listen to me for a moment it remain standing because I I am I am done oh it's time to go to church Simeon he just had a promise you may be seated I'm going to preach five more minutes I got 35 minutes is all brother Anthony gave me my God that's okay I can be done in 5 more minutes It'll be enough to see the
anointing but spirit-driven people not only see it they get to embrace it I don't know about you but when I see the anointing I want to embrace the anointing I see the anointing of God over this congregation tonight there is a glory cloud of the presence of almighty God and in just a moment we are going to embrace the anointing of God that is in this building by the act of embracing that baby that anointed one Simeon made the anointing his personally he drew it to himself he made it his own he appropriated it he drew it to his breast he placed the anointing of near his heart so he could hear the anointed heartbeat of God as it beat close to his he was embracing God's new fresh revelation God's new fresh anointing and manifestation I feel the spirit driving us tonight in this building to embrace this fresh anointing tonight to draw this anointing to yourself to wrap your arms around the anointing make it your own take it home with you place it near your heart so that as your heart beats it will beat at one with the anointing of God that you receive in this building here tonight God has given us revelatory Ministry during this meeting now the spirit is impelling it is driving us to embrace the fresh revelation of God's new manifestation in our lives right now God has a fresh new manifestation for you to embrace and although there are times when God embrac is us there are times when we have to embrace him the wise man Solomon said there is a time to embrace because of the times may I say after all of this beautiful relevator manifestation and Ministry that we had it is time tonight to embrace the newborn fresh revelatory manifestation that God has sent us through a anointed mouthpieces during this great conference it's time to embrace it's time to embrace the spirit come on reach your hands out reach your arms out envelop the presence of God draw it to yourself draw it to yourself now listen to me just one second while I close and standing while the musicians get ready I'll tell you what song I I ain't got a song but I like that song We were singing there the last one last night that about the Hallelujah he's my Jehovah Gyra whatever that is that's what I like amen are we fixing we fixing to embrace the anointing here tonight do anybody feel an expectancy in the air right now I feel a Word of Faith coming on us in the name of Jesus when Simeon embraced him when he embraced fresh Revelation suddenly his mouth was open when he embraced fresh Revelation his mouth began to form anointed words of praise the Bible says Simeon took him in his arms he embraced the anointing and the Revelation and the manifestation of what God was doing at that moment took it to his heart and when he embraced it suddenly the spirit of God began to move upon him with prophetic praise now I I've preached on praise a lot but just just just just grab me today prophetic praise and that's what we're fixing to do here today tonight we're
