Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

A mother arose in Israel

  • He opens the Mother's Day honoring by thanking the first lady for her presentation, announcing that he wants to open 'my part of mother's day honoring', and saying the church is doing something biblical in taking a few moments to honor mothers as God has told it to honor them.
  • He designates the text in the book of Judges, chapter 5, verse 6, and reads the passage: in the days of Shamgar the son of Anath the highways were unoccupied and the travellers walked through byways; the inhabitants of the villages ceased in Israel, until Deborah arose a mother in Israel; they chose new gods, there was war in the gates, and no shield or spear was seen among forty thousand.
  • He notes that Deborah herself wrote the words, and that the chapter ends in a victory led by a woman named Deborah.

Scriptures: Judges 5:6-8

More mothers to stand

  • He restates the text's picture: an ungodly, perilous culture in which no one traveled the highways, no houses were being built, and people hid in thickets — all of it happening until Deborah stood up in Israel as a mother.
  • He applies the text to the nation: what will cure a lot of the ills of the United States of America is not more spending but more mothers — more mothers to stand; the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

A mother literally or figuratively

  • Speaking as pastor, he stops to minister to women for whom Mother's Day is a heartbreak because they have never given birth biologically to a child, telling them they can be a mother literally or a mother figuratively.
  • He teaches that the Bible's term for a mother denotes one that binds together the family, and he invites the women of wisdom and godly example in the congregation to stand with the mothers and receive the congregation's thanks.
  • He leads the whole house to stand and thank God for the tremendous creation and the tremendous plan, for mothers, and for the church as the spiritual mother, and closes in prayer for the remainder of the service before letting the worship begin.

Scripture index: Judges 5:6-8.
