Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Go forward: the only direction God gives
- The sermon opens on the reading: the Lord tells Moses to speak to the children of Israel that they go forward.
- There is nothing anyone can do about the past; it cannot be corrected, and God will not give marching orders that include going back.
- Even the tabernacle, whenever it moved, always moved in a forward direction (Numbers 1:51).
Scriptures: Exodus 14:15; Numbers 1:51
Forgetting what is behind
- Paul's one thing: forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth to the things which are before.
- The things of your future are much better than the things of your past.
Scriptures: Philippians 3:13
Water spilled on the ground: David and Absalom
- A woman brings 2 Samuel 14:14 to David: we must needs die and are as water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again.
- Amnon could never be brought back to life and the wrong done to Tamar could never be corrected, but Absalom could be brought home.
- Trying to live in your past is trying to put water back into a cup that can never be fully gathered again.
Scriptures: 2 Samuel 14:14
Job looked back, but never went back
- Job, who had lost his wealth, his health, and everything around him, sought God: 'Oh that I knew where I might find him.'
- Job held God's steps, kept his way, and esteemed the words of God's mouth more than his necessary food.
- Although Job had looked back, he never went back; your joy is not in the past, and your mind will never be renewed and revived with fresh oil while it keeps going back.
Scriptures: Job 23:3-12
Those who went back — and today's altar call
- Orpah, Ruth's sister-in-law, went back and is never heard from again (Ruth 1:15); Lot's wife is remembered for going back.
- The just shall live by faith — and we are not of them which draw back unto perdition, but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
- The closing appeal: stop beating yourself up over things that can never be gathered up — today is a Jesus day, a brand new day.
Scriptures: Ruth 1:15; Hebrews 10:38-39
