Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The text: will ye also go away

  • He reads how from that time many of Jesus' disciples went back and walked no more with him, offended at what he preached.
  • He reads Jesus' question to the twelve — will ye also go away — and Peter's answer: Lord, to whom shall we go; thou hast the words of eternal life.
  • He announces the thought that came to him last Sunday while another man was preaching: I have no plan B.

Scriptures: John 6:66-68

Cortez takes away the way back

  • He tells of Cortez in 1519, landing in Mexico with 500 men on 11 ships against an Aztec force vastly larger than his own.
  • When his men began to bicker and talk of sailing home, Cortez had holes bored in the ships and burned what was above the water, so there would be no option of return.
  • He draws the lesson: the most notable healings come where the doctor said there is no cure, and we finish best when our backs are against the wall with no way out but forward.

No plan B in the walk with God

  • He allows plan B for lesser things — a college major, a career, a Friday-night restaurant with an hour-and-a-half wait — but preaches against having one for your walk with God.
  • He charges the hearer to refuse the negative spoken about them and refuse to let people's opinions affect their decisions: I will not give up, I will not turn back.
  • He closes with Peter in the garden, sword drawn to stay with his Savior, and an appeal to those watching by television to lift their hands and say, Jesus, I will follow you.

Scripture index: John 6:66-68.

turn in your Bibles with us to John 6 and verse 66 the infamous 666 verse of the Bible John 6 66 it reads from from that time many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him then said Jesus unto the twel will ye also go away then Simon Peter answered him Lord to whom shall we go thou Hast the words of eternal life allow me to preach in your hearing a thought that came last Sunday when B brother ballair was preaching the thought I have no plan B I have no plan B you may be seated this morning it was the year 1519 hernand Cortez arrived in mexic meico with his band of 500 Men Sailing In on 11 ships they made port and the goal of Cortez was simply to both find gold and figure out a way how to conquer the Aztec Indians of Mexico now the problem was that the Aztec Indians had a number of some half a million and he only had 500 it was never the plan it was never the plan when he set sail from Cuba it was never the plan for him to be the Conqueror it was just the plan for him to figure out a way to defeat these Fierce Aztec warriors known for eating their prisoners and wearing their skins as trophies and as Cortez began to uh make land and as he began to set up camp and began to uh look abroad and find where to find food and and as they started to make friends with the local Indians there not the Aztec but the local Indians that were friendly they were also enemies of the Aztec um the men of his party began to bicker and began to complain fear uncertainty lack of trust in Cortez began to arise the loyalty to the Cuban Cuban royalty uh was obviously a major issue because the men knew that they were not there to conquer but Cortez decided I'm here and I'm going to go ahead and Conquer while I'm here he wanted to be the one that was said had discovered Mexico and had conquered Mexico and and so what he did as the bickering and as people started his men started talking about sailing home and going home many of you if you had history in school and you did you remember reading about Cortez sinking his 11 vessels uh The Story Goes that he had is faithful he had those that were faithful to him bore holes in the bottom of the ships and as they bore the holes the ships of course would begin to sink and as the ships would sink Cortez would stand and watch them sink with his hands in the air and he would say I guess the worms have eaten through the Hall of our ship but he realized one thing and this was one thing that Cortez showed in in himself was he was not afraid to fight with his back up against the wall he realized the only way to go forward is to realize there are no options in going back and when we give ourselves no way out we have no choice but to push forward with everything that we have the the most notable Miracles are not the Miracles where there were numerous options of healings to be cured but the most notable healings are the healings when the doctor said there is no cure there is no way and so Cortez realized you know obviously we can go back and we can Retreat we can get more soldiers but if this is going to go down in history the way that I want it to go down I've got to take away Plan B there can be no option in returning home to Cuba you see we have the greatest chance at finishing this course if we put our backs against the wall and fight for the Finish Line with everything inside of us you see C say you fought for gold and riches and and in this Christian battle we are fighting to one day walk on streets of gold amen we got to tear up our plan B and they would they would give us an option to go back and leave the straight narrow path in John chapter 6 our text Jesus has offended some of his followers and they're not just bystanders but he's offended some of his disciples many of his disciples and I guess I look at this and I read and and I I feel that maybe as a church maybe as the body of Christ we shouldn't be too offended when when fellow saints of God leave us and are offended at what we preach and and turn away because it happened to Jesus and if it happened to Jesus it can happen to us amen you see God in flesh The Miracle Worker they they witnessed him do so many awesome and and courageous and mighty things and if they could leave him then I guess it shouldn't hurt our feelings when they come up with a plan B and leave us too but here in John chap 6 and verse 66 Jesus is started to say maybe my gospel is too hard for them but he wants to know will you also go away and I love what Peter's answer was in verse 68 he says Lord to whom shall we go he said thou Hast the words of eternal life Peter was simply saying we have left everything we have no plan B if we don't have you we don't have nothing at all they're saying my mother my father my sisters my brothers my aunts and my uncles my cousins they're not expecting me home when I left I told them I would never return you see my old job it's already replaced me I don't have some secret bank account that I could somehow run off and and make a new life God I put all my eggs in one basket and you got all that basket because you can offer eternal life and I'm not I'm not preaching against plan B's there are times to have plan B's I I I remember going through college and university and I remember I remember changing my major and that's okay you know there there are good times to have plan B you know if if major a isn't working out you you need to go to to plan B to Major be you know uh career choices you know some people some people they think that they want to be a plumber but you know once they uh get out of trade school and they they start setting toilets they decide you know what maybe I maybe I'd rather be an electrician or well I don't really like pulling wire maybe I'll be something else and there's okay to have a plan B uh if you eat dinner here in marville on a Friday night you better have a plan B restaurant many times I've gone to different restaurants and and they've said an hour and a half weight and I thought you know what I don't know I'm not sure if there's food that's worth an hour and a half weight and so I'm not preaching against pling bees but if you're here today and you have a plan B with your walk with God that's what I'm preaching about today God give us something inside of us a holy ghost uh a holy ghost power inside of us oh God that we do not come up with a plan B when it comes with our walk with you it doesn't matter how hard things become it doesn't matter how narrow the path gets how hard the path gets God if you have a Doctrine and I know you do if you bring your word before the church oh God and it steps on my toes and it hurts my feelings God I will not give up God I will not turn away just because my flesh is offended we got to make up our mind as Cortez did I've come too far to turn back now I refuse to listen to the negative being spoken about me I refuse to listen listen to people's opinions and let them affect my decisions I will not give up I will not turn back uh I'm in a race and my eye is on the goal I will not outboard holes in the boats uh the story tells about Cortez as he would burn the rest of the ship that was above the water he didn't want any options at all I don't want a plan B I'm in this with everything I have I I have no other option but you oh God but fortunately there are disciples that are falling away and turning back towards home but I stand here today and I say God but as for me God as for my house I stand up with Peter and the other 11 and I say there is nowhere else to go God I can't leave your house I can't leave your people this is my family oh God this is where I worship this is where I find peace and joy this is where I Feel Love This is Where I know you accept my worship and praise that goes up every Sunday God where would I go if I didn't have you God if I didn't have your church oh I wish somebody just lift up their hands and say God lord if all else fails if everybody else if they leave this truth if they leave this Doctrine oh God I will make it my family will make it I will fight to the very end I don't care how many of the enemy there is I don't care what they're saying about the enemy oh God you are on my side God you're fighting with us you're fighting for us oh God we will not be afraid we will not be ashamed oh God but we're with you to the end Peter was saying Jesus we're with you to the end Jesus we're going to defend you it was Peter it was Peter in the garden who drew his sword and cut off the ear of that Soldier why did he do it he thought if I could just be with my savior with my Messiah I'll protect him I'll do whatever it takes and that's how I feel today if you'll stand to your feet and lift your hands and say God whatever it takes wherever you lead me wherever you guide me God I will follow God I'll be your servant God I will not come up with a plan B there is no other option to this thing oh God but I give you my whole life if you're watching by way of television today I want you to know that God loves you that God cares for you that God gave his life he came as a man and robed himself in flesh and died on a cross for your sins for your healing for your deliverance I want you right now maybe where you sit in front of a a television I want you just to lift up your hands and say Jesus I Will Follow You Jesus revealed to me all truth Lord don't Lord God don't let your doctrines offend me oh God but let me receive them Lord your word says taste and see that the Lord is good taste and see that he is good
