Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
For what shall it profit a man?
- He reads the text: for what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
- Every person lives by a value standard, and a thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it
- He is preaching on our valuables: whatever a person values, that is what he becomes like
Scriptures: Mark 8:36-37
They lightly esteemed the rock of their salvation
- God's own explanation for Israel's backsliding is that they lightly esteemed the rock of their salvation
- To esteem is to place value upon; Israel could leave God because they had placed little value on him
- Job held on through losing everything in a day because he esteemed the words of God's mouth more than his necessary food
Scriptures: Deuteronomy 32:15; Job 23:11-12
Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of stew
- The first mention of profit in the Bible falls in the story of the brothers Jacob and Esau
- Esau was named for his appearance and Jacob for his action, and the two value systems run through the whole account
- Appearance-driven people live for the moment and exaggerate their need: behold, I am at the point to die
- Esau despised his birthright, placed little value on it, and had no blessing left to pass to his children
Scriptures: Genesis 25:24-34
Small steps, and an old man's blessing
- By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph, worshipping as he leaned upon his staff
- The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and David had never seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging bread
- They told Jacob that Joseph was coming, but it was Israel who strengthened himself and sat up on the bed
- A life lived for God now is the only investment that leaves children something tomorrow
Scriptures: Hebrews 11:21; Psalm 37:23-26; Genesis 48:2-3
Naaman's dirt and the servant's leprosy
- Naaman, healed of his leprosy, asked only for earth from the land to build an altar, while the prophet refused his gifts
- The prophet's servant ran after the departing gifts, hid the silver and garments in the house, and then lied to his master about where he had been
- The leprosy of Naaman cleaved to the servant and to his seed forever: appearance-driven living passes its loss down to the children
Scriptures: 2 Kings 5:24-27
Two driven men at one table
- Jesus and Judas were both driven men with opposite views of worship: one valued it, and the other counted it waste
- Jesus took the bread and reached for Judas one last time before Satan entered into him
- He closes by urging every hearer to value God enough to come to the altar and give him their life
- He leads the church in prayer for a pastor's wife diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, as her sister is anointed on her behalf

that a service is nowhere near complete without the word of god we must have the word of god jesus said mark 8 36 for what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his soul or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul i want to minister for a few moments today and leave you with this on our valuables our valuables as we pray over the message today i want your prayer to be god help me to see and value things that you value i want to value what you value please remember to pray this morning for brother rwood our founding pastor although we've received several reports of a miraculous healing we want to ask god to continue to stay upon brother r wood and touch him he's been in ut hospital let's remember brother james r wood today in prayer also you have noticed the absence of brother and sister hammond brother hammond's grandfather passed away on friday evening and brother sister hammond zach our youth pastor is in georgia this eve at the time and at this pray today for our founding pastor brother harwood lord that your hand of healing would be upon brother rwood today god that you would heal him and by your stripes we are made whole lord anoint your servant this morning and that i would convey the word of god to this congregation in jesus mighty name we pray amen and amen would you give the lord a hand of praise before you're seated you may be seated all of us this morning all of us have a value standard all of us have a value standard this morning it is a value standard that affects the way you see yourself it is a value standard that affects the way that you see others but most importantly it is a value standard that causes you to see the things of god the saying goes that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it something is only worth what you're willing to pay for it so the true of a price tag is not the number on there but the truth of the price tag is what you're willing or you value that to be worth now no one would pay 15 for a mcdonald's sorry mcdonald's but no one would pay 15 for a big mac but take me to ruth chris steakhouse and things begin to change because you value what's put on the plate at ruth chris more than once brought in the cardboard box from mcdonald's it's all in your value a value at times a value at times is based on you determining how you will be profited by whatever you value what is the profit or what can i get out of this how will this benefit me and of course today you know obviously i'm talking about god and the things of god and let me go on the record this morning and tell anyone that's contemplating surrendering their life to god do it and do it this morning because the sooner you come the quicker he can start doing great and wonderful and marvelous things in your life amen in the book of deuteronomy chapter 32 and verse number 15 god begins to give the explanation of why israel had backslid we hear many causes today for why people are lukewarm while people are backsliding going back to the world we hear many reasons many excuses that are given but god gives the main reason that people turn their back on him he says in deuteronomy 32 15 and i'll just read the last part of the verse he just simply said then he forsook god which made him and lightly esteemed the rock of his salvation in other words israel left god a god that found them as slaves in egypt a god that found them their wives being raped their children being as soon as they could carry something taken away and made slaves for pharaoh a god who brought them out a god who brought them out of that horrible house of bondage brought them into the lamb that flowed with milk and honey gave them whales they didn't dig in vineyards they didn't plant and houses they didn't build was a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day bread would rain down from heaven and rock water would spew out of a rock a god who was their healer a god who was their deliverer a god who was their waymaker why would you ever turn your back on that god why would you ever turn your back on the goodness of god the answer is found in the closing words of chapter 32 verse 15 because they lightly esteemed the rock of their salvation they put the word esteem there means to place value upon it says they were able to leave me because they placed little value upon me job how in the world do you hold on job how in the world do you hold on when without an explanation in a day's time brother cincotta you lose everything you own in a day's time man i've seen people get a get the sniffles and begin to doubt whether god loves them or not i've seen people washing machines and their cars break down at the same time and they begin to question does god care about me this man lost everything he owned in a 24-hour period he lost his he lost his wealth he lost his children a few days later job would lose his health he would be stricken with boils from the top of his head to the soles of his feet he lose in a few days he would lose everything he owned he would lose his children which represented his future he would use his health that that represented his current suffering that he had job how do you hold on he says in job 23 11 my foot held his steps his way i had his way i've kept and not declined neither have i gone back from the commandment of his lips i esteemed the words of his mouth more necessary than food you know how job made it through his trial he didn't get hungry for bread and meat he wanted the word of god to come into his life he just knew if i can somehow get him the presence where the word of god is being taught or preached i'm gonna be all right if job made it because he knew the word of god had the answer you and i will make it through any difficult time in our life i just gotta get to church this morning things haven't changed in my life in a few weeks but if i can just get to the house of god i just believe i could hear the word of god one more time i could make it one more day i can make it one more week if i could just get to the house valuables valuables there is a common law among bible scholars that if you really want to if you really want to learn a subject go to what is referred to as the law of first mention if you will go to the law of first mention you will see the roots for the word that goes throughout the bible like a thread through a garment do you know that the first time the word profit to profit not a profit speaker from god but to profit to had have gained for it to add something to the first time it is mentioned it is mentioned in this conversation genesis 25 24 the first time the word prophet is mentioned is mentioned between brothers jacob and esau and it simply says that when her days to be delivered were fulfilled behold there were twins in her womb jacob and esau the first came out red all over like a hairy garment and they called his name esau after that came his brother out and his hand took hold of esau's heel his name was called jacob and isaac was three score years old when she bear them i want us to notice something because the first time the word prophet is mentioned is mentioned by one of the brothers but i want to show you how opposite these two brothers are the first brother esau is named because of his appearance it is his appearance that he gains his name when he was born the bible simply said he came out red all over like a hairy garment and therefore they called his name after his appearance when jacob is born moments later jacob's hand comes over and takes the heel of his brother esau and thus they named him jacob hill grabber they named him after his action please notice this one man is named after appearance another man is named after action one man is named after appearance one man is named after action verse 27 and the boys grew esau was a cunning hunter cunning means skill he was a skilled hunter a man of the field jacob was a plain man dwelling in tents once again we see the opposites of these two one is named appearance one is named action one goes to the field and hones his skills in hunting one sets home in a tent now on the surface it would look like that he just simply was somebody that never left the tent but this is not so it is a common it is common commonly believed that in those days that older men who were passing down the oral word of god you do understand that before we have had the written word of god we had the oral word of god that went from one generation to the next one older man would tell the ways of god to other men it is commonly believed that this is where jacob is at jacob is in the tent of the old holy men as they begin to speak orally the word of god esau appearance had the desire of the field jacob actions had the desire to hear the word of god let us go on verse number 28 and isaac loved esau because he did eat of his venison but rebecca loved jacob leave that verse there for a moment now i'm just going to try to read it at face value but i think as a parent that a lousy reason to love your children is that they cook you a meal i just can't read any more into that than that isaac loved esau because of what esau brought him you see sometimes parents when we have the wrong value system is it any strange thing when our children develop the wrong value system you don't love a child because he cooks for you you love a child because you birth them you love a child because it's a natural tendency that's my son that's my daughter you don't love them because of their behavior you love them because of the relationship can i tell you today god doesn't love us because we're making straight a's in our behavior god loves us because of a relationship today sometimes i'm up i'm just being transparent sometimes i'm up and sometimes i'm down but don't you ever thought don't you ever doubt the fact that we serve a living loving god today he doesn't love us over our venison let me go on this morning jacob isaac loved him because he made venison for him but rebecca loved jacob verse 29 jacob sod pottage means he boiled soup stew he's got a pot he's got meat and he's boiling stew esau came from the field and was faint esau said to jacob feed me i pray thee with that same red pottage for i'm faint therefore was his name called edom now you've got to understand that the bible is being written after the fact so moses is writing having all the knowledge but what we know at the time is that esau and we'll see how many of you are listening to me this morning esau who is appearance right esau looks at the stew the smell his hunger red stew and he says he says give me some of this same red pottage for i am faint then it says therefore was his name called edom or red which moses goes ahead in the future and tells you about a horrible trade that esau made a horrible trade that he made watch the conversation he said sell me i pray these same red potties for i am faint therefore was his name called esau i've written down here whatever you value that you will become like whatever you value you're going to become like you value hollywood and entertainment watch out you'll start dressing like them you'll get your hair cut like them you'll comb your hair like them you'll start talking like them let them endure some kind of drink on a commercial you'll go buy that drink why anything anything that you value you will become like that same is true on the other end if you value the things of god it's no it's no surprise that you'll become you'll start becoming like a son of god things will start to change in your life you value you become whatever you value you become like verse 31 jacob said sell me this day thy birthright i want your birthright i want that blessing i want that birthright that the firstborn gets esau i wasn't privileged to be the firstborn you are privileged to be the firstborn he saw i have had to live in your shadow all of my life coveting the day that we would hear our father isaac pronounce a blessing over the family i have coveted the day that i will become the spiritual leader of the tribe i have coveted this day but he saw it's all you you're going to be the one with the birthright you're going to be the one that leads the spiritual burden you're going to be the one that keeps truth going on in this family it should have read the god of abraham isaac and esau that's how it should have read but because esau did not value what god had given him it was of no value to esau when jacob began to say because you see when you are appearance driven you live for the moment when you are appearance driven when when all you care about is how you appear you live for the moment when esau stood there and heard his brother say he heard his brother say sell me your birthright and i'll give you the moment of a bowl of stew you sell me your birthright and i'll give you what you want for the moment the bible tells us as esau begin to contemplate this trade of the in verse number 33 and jacob said swear no no no go back to verse 32. i'm missing the the point where it's first mentioned in the bible and esau said verse 32 behold i am at the point to die now i want to show you something people who are appearance driven exaggerate people who are appearance driven exaggerate they're they think things is much worse off than it is i am at the point to die i am about to draw my last breath no you're not esau you've got a you just walked out of the field you're standing here in front of me you are not about to die but appearance driven people will always exaggerate their situation if you let listen appearance driven people appearance driven people they'll let one person mock the way they dress and they'll stick their thumb in their mouth and go tell their pastor everybody at school is making fun of me appearance driven people that they'll let some one person do them wrong and they'll put the word they they'll put the word them behind it esau said i am at the point to die but watch this and what prophet shall this birthright do to me in other words what am i going to get out of this i've got to hold on to this for a later date i've got to hold on to this for a later date you see too many people when they are appearance driven live in the moment of the now they've got to be satisfied right now they've got to have it right now i've got to have god come through for me right now or i'm not coming back tonight god's got to god's got to do this right now or i'm giving up you know i read i read some time ago about a a test that was performed on kindergarten kids years ago and and it's called the two marshmallow tests the two marshmallow tests and they were told they went in a room with kindergartens and they gave marshmallows out to all the children they told the children that if they would wait for the teacher to come back that the teacher would give them another marshmallow would give them two marshmallows and if they could wait but if they ate the marshmallow that was given while the teacher was gone they would not get the reward of a second marshmallow well they had them on cameras and they showed the teacher came in and put the marshmallows around and then explained to the children and left the room and it was amazing to watch on the video some of the children never picked the marshmallow up some would pick it up and look at it and put it back down and others would walk around it and then finally there would be those kids that would reach up and eat the marshmallow the teacher would come back in the room and to the children that still had a marshmallow they would reward them with two well what's the point of the study well they tracked these children for the next 25 years and they discovered that the children that had to have their marshmallow now were dropouts of high school children that had to have their marshmallow now were children that never excelled in anything but the two marshmallow kids those were your high scores in college those were the kids those were the kids that went beyond college and and turned into business owners and ceos and the point of the story is if you can put off today to enjoy the morrow you'll live a whole lot better not only in the things of this world but the things of god esau looked at the moment and said what will it profit me i'm at the point to die can i tell you today i stand here in the house of god with a lot of questions i stand here today in the house of god with net everything perfect in my life but i want you to know i am a two marshmallow saint of god i am going to hold out to god because god has never done us nothing but good if i don't get a raise next week that doesn't mean i'm going to turn over with god if i'm not healed if i'm not delivered i'm going to continue to value the things of god there's value in reading the bible there's value and daily prayer there's value to regularly coming to the house of god there's value in going to the prayer room there's value for worship in god there's value when you discipline your mind there's value when you magnify him come on why don't we value the moment right now what shall it profit me what shall it profit me and jacob said swear to me this day and he swear unto him he sold him his birthright unto jacob then jacob gave he saw bread and potatoes of lentils and he did eat and drink and rose up and went his way thus esau despised or can i add this can i add this to it place little value on his birthright too many people live in the appearance of now and think very little about tomorrow's consequences if we could only get people to weigh their actions out in the value and look and say if i do this right now what will be the consequences of my life the sad thing is it is never recorded that esau passed a blessing along to his children it is never recorded that he ever had a time on his death bed that he passed the blessings along esau never had it and rightfully so he had forfeited it in his youth but not jacob the book of hebrews tells us in chapter 11 verse 21 by faith jacob when he was dying bless both of his sons both of the sons of joseph and worshiped leaning upon his staff can i tell you this this morning there's something valuable about living for god now if you will live for god now you're going to be able to give your children something tomorrow but if you don't value now you have nothing to give them in their future it was jacob it was jacob that when he is old gets out of his bed it is jacob that puts this blessing and i want to read to you from psalms 37 verse number 23 can somebody say praise god watch these verses psalms 37 verse 23 the steps of a good man are ordered by the lord he delighteth in his way can i tell you i am here today because of small steps i have made to be here too many people think they're going to become something in god by great quantum leap you are who you are today because of small steps some taken in the reign of your life some taken in the snow of your life some taking in the joys of your life and some taking in the heartache of your life but you are here today carl perry because you have made small steps in your life and david said the steps of a good man are ordered by the lord but watch watch this now verse 24 though he fall he shall not utterly be cast down for the lord upholdeth him with his hand i have been young and now am old yet i have not seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging bread most of the time we quit right here but the next verse is powerful he is ever merciful and lendeth and his seed is blessed parents i'm preaching to you today value the house of god today pass it down to your children tomorrow value something today don't be appearance driven while the normal person doesn't go to church while the normal person doesn't act like that at church you're not appearance driven you are not appearance driven you're action driven i'm not going to pass down my appearance to my children i'm going to pass down my actions to my children come on give him some praise this morning oh i'm going to try i'm just going to have to hit i'm just going to have to hit the high places here i'm just going to have to hit some high places here chapters chapter 48 and verse number two jacob was a young man when he said give me the potted give me the birthright jacob was possibly a teenager when he said to esau i want the birthright he was possibly a teenager and now he is well up in age chapter 48 and verse 2 of genesis and one told jacob and said behold thy son joseph cometh unto thee and israel strengthened himself and set up on the bed i don't know about you but that's a good scripture right there because he's not young anymore he's an old man who's who is bedridden but word came to him that your children are coming to see you and the bible says they told jacob they told jacob that joseph was coming but it was israel that strengthened himself isn't that is that amazing they tell jacob the old man but it was israel that strengthened himself oh i just can't help but believe that with any investment with any investment comes in it comes interest with a good investments a good investment only if it gives you back more than what you put into it are you just still with me today a good investment is not that you get out of it what you put into it it's not a good investment that you give up you put a thousand dollars in something 10 years ago and you're gonna go to the bank tomorrow and get a thousand dollars out that's not a good investment at all a good investment is that you put something in 10 years ago and you go back to get it now and it has grown can i tell you that having an investment in the things of god will cause you to reap something the bible said he was old but when they came and said your children are coming it was the israel inside of him that said i i remember how i got that name of israel now watch watch verse 3 and jacob said unto joseph god almighty appeared unto me and loves in the land of canaan and blessed me what are you talking about there i'm talking about jacob though he was old though he was real old though he was real old kept tethered to his relationship with god may we value our conversion may we value conviction may we value that we were once in darkness but now we are in light may we value that we once were dead in our trespasses and sins we had all kinds of habits that were going to take us to an early grave we had all kind of habits that would have ruined our health but praise god this morning we have been born again of the water and the spirit we have been delivered from the value system of the world this world is not our home love not the world neither the things that are in the world if any man love the world the love of the father is not in him i am glad for the value system of god come on giving praise this morning ah i'm going to have to brush over this very quickly in the second book of kings chapter 5 is a story about a heathen sinner man with leprosy by the name of naaman naaman comes to the man of god and the man of god tells him how to be cured of leprosy and naaman dips seven times and is healed of leprosy naaman comes back to the house of the man of god now you gotta understand naaman is a is a is a sinner naaman is a man of the world he's got gold he's got changes of garment he's got camels that are that that have boxes of wealth why because he believes he's going to have to pay for this healing so he comes back to the house of the man of god and he opens up the trunks and he runs his hand through the silver coins and through the gold coins and maybe brings a couple of garments out of high wealth and he says man of god these are yours but the man of god says no i don't receive them i don't receive them and he urged them the bible says he urged him he says no no no no i do not receive them now the reason the man of god did this was for a testimony the man of god wanted naaman to go back to that sinful town in syria and say there was a god in israel that healed me and didn't take a dime there was a god in israel that healed me and didn't take anything from me but isn't it amazing and i'm just here to tell you there is no new convert as long as i got strength in my body there's no new convert going to out pray me there is no new convert going to out church me i will not be schooled by any new convert i will not look at the enthusiasm of new converts and the zeal of new converts and say they'll become like me one day they'll get used to this know what you're really saying is they will devalue this that will devalue this listen to naaman for a moment listen to naaman naaman says now just get him as a new convert he knows nothing he says you won't take anything he says but will you give me something well i've already given you healing what do you want naaman will you allow there to be two mules with as much dirt put in sacks and placed upon them will you allow mules to be given with as much dirt from this land so that i can take the dirt home from this land and take it into my house and build me an altar and worship god will you give me enough dirt from this land to build me an altar back in syria he granted him that but the bible now tells us about the assistant to the man of god a man that had been around miracles a man that possibly had been brought up in church i added that a man that possibly had a godly mom and dad that was close to the prophet the man's name is gehesa geheza stands there and while a sinner man is asking for nothing but dirt so he can build an altar gehey's eyes mind is blown because he can't believe the man of god hasn't taken a garment some silver some gold sounds like appearance to me it's a very dangerous thing to be in the house of god and be appearanced driven well i i'd go the altar but i don't want anybody to think i'm in trouble appearance appearance well i do this but i don't want somebody to think appearance appearance hazel naaman left and haze i followed hazel followed naaman some space down the road and stopped naming and begin to lie it's amazing people that are appearance driven begin to lie a lie is not living in the reality of the truth hey naaman my master's had some company come to him from a far off country and they need some of that garment they need some of that gold naaman obliged him gave him more than what he asked for the bible tells us the bible tells us in second kings chapter 5 verse 24. he brings naaman or excuse me gehazar brings the stuff back and when he came to the tower he took them from their hand and bestowed them in his house and he let the men go and they departed and he went in and stood before his master and elisha said unto him whence cometh thou gehes gahaze and he said thy servant went no wither can i tell you about being appearance driven you'll start lying to yourself out in the world and then you'll start lying to yourself in the house of god where'd you go guys i i didn't go anywhere verse 26 and he said unto him went not mine heart with thee when the man turned again from his cherry to meet thee is it a time to receive money to receive garments olive yards vineyards sheep oxen men servants made serpents the leprosy therefore of naaman shall cleave unto thee and unto thy sea forever and he went out from his presence a leper what is snow do you see that if name if jehazad had not been appearance driven he would have possibly been the replacement for elisha he would have been a prophet with a prophetic calling upon him but because he got driven in the moment of appearance all he had to pass on to his children can't you see them years later as a matter of fact if you study the bible the four leprous men at the gate of samaria is strongly believed among bible commentaries to be four sons of ghazal don't know about you today don't have a lot of money to leave my children don't have a lot to leave you good folks should i die but may i leave you something that wall street cannot tamper with may i leave you actions of a holy man of god i know i get red face i know i get loud at times i know that in some eyes i get undignified but i'm not concerned about appearance i'm concerned about actions today musicians would you come would you come musicians please just let me finish my thought before you prejudge this jesus and judas have a lot in common jesus and judas have a lot in common they are both driven men judas is driven with doing the will of himself appearance jesus is driven by doing the will of god jesus viewed and valued worship to god judas viewed and valued worship as a waste both of them both of them saw worship but one said and it's one of the most powerful scriptures to believe that jesus is god because he allowed people to worship him if he were not god he was the breaker of the first commandment but because he allowed worship it's proved positive jesus christ is god judas looked at worship and said it's a waste jesus and judah said at the same table and jesus reached for judas one last time one last time he said brother carpenter you don't know how the story ends i do know the author and the finisher of our story and i believe that that night that god could have rearranged everything when he took that mixture that represented the passover lamb and he said judas will you take this will you take this judas will you take this i believe with every action you take there's a god who's watching you and there's an enemy watching you i believe today i'm not trying to hype you up but i believe hell gets nervous when we have church you hear me today i believe that hell gets nervous when we start having church because hell is wondering he can't read your heart satan can't read your heart he's wondering what's he doing i can i can see i can see satan now there at the table watch it wait a minute in the spirit world what's he doing jesus is taking this he's taking the stop he's handing it to judas our whole plans will be messed up everything will be messed up everything everything i see the demons as they bite their fingernails i see the name oh he's got this up just like this morning see a lot of people get a lot of people get way way all kind of weirded out over demon possession can i tell you what you ought to first start getting concerned about is demon influence because you are never possessed by the devil unless you're first influenced by the devil and can i tell you you are never possessed with the spirit of god until you are you are influenced by the spirit of god oh what's he what's he about to do what's he about to do he's about to believe in himself he's about he's almost believed but to believe in himself maybe seated and judas reached and took the stop and the bible says and immediately satan entered him satan knew i've got to do something quickly and immediately he entered him both are driven men both have a view of worship both said at the same table and i listen to me now listen to me real close both judas and jesus volunteered their life think about it jesus willingly both judas and jesus hung on a tree jesus stretches his hands out says i'm action driven i know there's no form in me you don't desire me because of appearance there i have no comeliness about me i have no beauty that you would desire me i'm just a god of action judas goes and takes a rope ties it around the limb of a tree puts the noose around his neck jesus hangs on the tree and says father forgive him blood and water issue from his side which represent life judah swings out from a lower branch the net the rope tightens it breaks he tumbles to the ground below and hits with such force what was on the inside of jesus came out so that there will be life the bible records the gory details that judas hit the ground with such force that his intestines burst open and poured out up on the ground i can't answer for you today i value this place i value the house of
