Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The label we wear, and the plan Peter preached

  • He opens Part Two of the midweek series glad for the label: apostolic is our doctrine and Pentecostal is our experience — a label is no salvation issue, but the church is not on a covert operation, and a name chosen to camouflage what we believe is the wrong motive; it does not matter what you are called, but it matters what you believe.
  • He tells of the funeral director who felt the Holy Spirit at his mother's service the night before and of witnessing to him about what it means to be apostolic, through the story of a Baptist church whose pastor's family received the Holy Ghost and changed its name to a Pentecostal church.
  • Standing, he reads his head text in Acts chapter two: God has made this same Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ; the hearers, pricked in their hearts, ask Peter and the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do?
  • He teaches Peter's answer as the New Testament plan of salvation: repent — a change of mind and view, being stricken with sorrow over the way you have lived, not merely sorry you got caught — and be baptized, immersed in water, in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, for the promise is to you and your children and all that are far off.
  • He insists baptism be done according to the Scripture and spoken aloud for the remission of sins, and corrects two errors: nowhere in the Bible is anyone baptized to join a church, and it is not merely an outward sign of an inward experience — so ask whoever baptized you whether the name of Jesus Christ was called over you and whether it was for the remission of your sins.
  • He says our posture toward sincere people of less light is not enmity or judgment but responsibility: we do not view them as enemies but as people we must witness to, since salvation is proven not by our emotions but by the Word of God.

Scriptures: Acts 2:36-39

Cornelius: the same salvation opened to the Gentiles

  • He turns to Acts chapter eleven: the apostles and brethren in Judea heard the Gentiles had received the Word, and those of the circumcision contended with Peter for eating with uncircumcised men, so Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning.
  • He reads Peter's account: the vessel descending like a great sheet at Joppa, the voice saying arise, Peter, slay and eat, his refusal, and the answer — what God has cleansed, call not thou common — done three times; then the three men from Caesarea and the six brethren who went with him into the man's house.
  • He highlights the angel's words to Cornelius: Peter will tell thee words whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved — so what Peter preached in Acts chapter ten had to do with salvation, and as Peter began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them as on us at the beginning.
  • He goes back to Acts chapter ten and reads: to him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believes in him shall receive remission of sins — and while Peter yet spoke these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all who heard the word.
  • He says the believing Jews who came as witnesses were astonished because on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost, and they knew it for one reason: they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.
  • He reads Peter's conclusion — can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? — and that he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord, adding that our chain runs back to the book of Acts, not to Azusa Street or Topeka.

Scriptures: Acts 11:1-15; Acts 10:43-48

John chapter three: born of water and of the Spirit

  • He reads the Gospel of John chapter three: Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, comes by night confessing Jesus a teacher come from God, and Jesus answers with the doubled verily verily — his way of demanding undivided attention — except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
  • He teaches the exchange verse by verse: Nicodemus asks about entering his mother's womb again; Jesus answers that except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter the kingdom — and water means water here, and Spirit means Spirit; that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
  • He puts it in a saying: born once, you die twice — once physically and once the spiritual death of eternal damnation; born twice, you may die once, because the born-again will not suffer that second death.
  • He expounds the wind: you hear the sound thereof but cannot tell whence it comes or where it goes — so is everyone born of the Spirit; there is a sound when someone is born of the Spirit — and when Nicodemus asks how these things can be, Jesus asks how a master of Israel who studies Ezekiel's promise of a new heart and sprinkled water does not know them.
  • He says the issue with Nicodemus was not understanding but believing, and reads on through the Son of Man who came down from heaven and is in heaven, Moses lifting up the serpent in the wilderness as the type of the lifted-up Son of Man, and God's love in giving his only begotten Son.
  • He locates the famous verse: we believe that verse about God so loving the world, but it stands in its proper order as the foundation laid to a man who did not yet understand the new birth of water and Spirit — salvation starts in Jesus, hung on a cross as the serpent was lifted on the pole.

Scriptures: John 3:1-22

Saul to Paul: an experience is not yet salvation

  • He turns to Acts chapter nine and reads: Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples, takes letters to Damascus — and Saul is not saved; on the road the voice asks, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me, and the Lord tells him to arise and go into the city, where it shall be told him what he must do.
  • He reads Paul's later testimony in Acts chapter twenty-two: the voice, I am Jesus of Nazareth whom thou persecutest; arise and go into Damascus; blinded by the glory of the light, he is led by the hand, and Ananias comes to him — brother Saul, receive thy sight — and tells him the God of our fathers has chosen him to know his will and be his witness to all men.
  • He lands on Ananias's command: and now why tarriest thou? Arise and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord — even after the Damascus road experience and his Lord, what wilt thou have me to do, Saul still had his sins until he was baptized.
  • To the objection that Paul's conversion never mentions tongues, he states his law of common sense: what is already established by pattern needs no restating — in the second, tenth, and nineteenth chapters of Acts they received the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues — and he reads Paul's own word to Corinth: I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all.

Scriptures: Acts 9:1-6; Acts 22:7-16; 1 Corinthians 14:18

The thief on the cross, and the dispensations

  • He takes up the hypothetical questions people ask about the plan of salvation — what about a man in a desert with no water? — and answers with the man standing twenty feet from water now, then the thief on the cross: the objector is right that the thief was not baptized and did not receive the Holy Ghost, because the thief lived under a different dispensation, the law, only days before a new dispensation opened.
  • He surveys the dispensations, each a period when God dealt with man in a particular way and each ending in judgment: innocence ended with expulsion from the garden; conscience ended with the worldwide flood; human government ended with the scattering at Babel; promise ended in Egyptian bondage; and the law could not work through weak flesh.
  • He reads that Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us — for it is written, cursed is everyone that hangs on a tree — and that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes.
  • He says that under the law God retained his own prerogative — I will have mercy upon whom I will have mercy — and could pronounce the sins forgiven of the man let down through the roof, and of the penitent thief on the cross, telling him he would be with him in paradise.
  • But, he says, we are under the grace dispensation: grace means strength and government — he is under the rulership of Jesus Christ, identifying with his death at the altar, his burial in the baptismal tank, and his resurrection by receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Scriptures: Galatians 3:13; Romans 10:4; Romans 9:15

Tell it: the close of the lesson

  • He reminds the church that the law ended when God robed in flesh hung on a cross, and fifty days later a brand-new dispensation opened — the grace dispensation we live in now — which will end in tribulation, but just before it, God will call his church out of here.
  • He answers the young people's objection — brother Carpenter, if this is the right way, why are so many not obeying it? — with the days of Noah: there were a lot of people, but one man found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
  • He urges the church to thank God before leaving that, of all the billions who have lived, they have been privileged to know the truth, and says one way to keep what you have is to be thankful for it.
  • He closes in prayer: thankfulness for being baptized in Jesus name and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and a charge to be mindful through the work week of those who need what was said — the world needs the grace message of the new birth — asking God to lead them to hungry people who will receive the witness, and dismisses the church in Jesus name.

the house of the lord uh it is a blessing is a blessing to uh the man of god it truly it truly is acts chapter 2 and verse number 36 therefore let all the house of israel know assuredly that god hath made that same jesus whom you have crucified both lord and christ now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart and said unto peter and to the rest of the apostles men and brethren what shall we do then peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the holy ghost for the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are far off even as many as the lord our god shall call i want to continue teaching questions apostolic people are asked father i love you tonight i thank you lord for the privilege to stand before this group of people that love you and that god that are here on this midweek service that have a desire god to be here and to learn from your word lord i pray tonight that i'll speak your word and that god your word will be a revelation and a reminder god of who we are and god i'll give you praise tonight if you'll help me teach this lesson in jesus name we pray amen and amen and in advance that god's going to bless us through the word would you give him a hand to praise right now god is going to bless us tonight through his word you may be seated i believe this can connect and it can it can tie in to the bible study tonight as i said last week it doesn't matter what label you wear it doesn't matter what you're called or it doesn't matter what label that you wear but it does matter what you believe it does matter what you believe but i do want to say that i don't think there's anything wrong with having a label that you like to be identified with i like the label apostolic i like the label pentecostal because apostolic is our doctrine and pentecost is our experience and i i i'm some have have um some have tried to say that brother carpenter believes that you have to have that in the name of your church well i don't believe it is a salvation issue but i think it could be if you're trying to name your church something in order not to identify with apostolic pentecost you you call it whatever you want to as long as your motive wouldn't be to to camouflage or to try to hide what you believe this listen uh the church is not in a covert operation here we're not trying to sneak up on people and and surprise them with what we believe right right and uh so i am uh i i it doesn't matter what you're called but it does matter what you believe but i do like being called apostolic i do i do like being called apostolic the funeral director last night after uh the service he called me to the side and he said i want you to know that i felt the holy spirit tonight when you all were singing and uh preaching said i felt the holy spirit and he began to tell me he began to tell me that he was of a certain denomination and that his wife um was of a denomination that believed in receiving the holy ghost and he said yes he said uh he he said he said um a minister from maryville married us and said i got her since she was attending a pentecostal church so i can't think of the name of it uh and he kept he told me five points and then uh he said freedom i said freedom i said freedom to worship pentecostal church he said yeah that's it he said the minister that married us with charlie lambert do you know him i said i certainly certainly do know him and i know the history of the church there that church was first called freedom to worship baptist church and charlie's mom and dad charlie's father pastored that church and they enrolled charlie in the christian school here several years ago and during a chapel service god baptized charlie with the baptism of the holy ghost and he went home and he told his mother about it his mother sue and she said charlie you think god gave me the holy ghost he said well let's see and he prayed his mama through to the holy ghost and then mama and daddy got to mama and son got talking to daddy and they prayed daddy through to the holy ghost and the holy ghost started moving through that church and they changed the name of that church to freedom to worship baptist to freedom to worship pentecost church and so i told that that man that today i got to witness to him and tell him what it meant to be apostolic and to be apostle like and that god was pouring out god was pouring out his spirit and i do believe that when you receive the baptism of the holy ghost that he will lead you and he will guide you into all the truth he will lead you and guide you into all the truth and so um i'm glad i like having being called apostolic because it gives us an opportunity to witness about this precious truth that we have this precious truth as i read tonight as in the book of acts when peter preached the death burial and resurrection of jesus christ for the very first time and as he preached the audience was pricked in their hearts convicted by the holy ghost and they asked peter men and brethren what shall we do now i'm i'm teaching on what questions that apostolics are asked and i i may just deviate from one thing here in soul winning in sow innings we are not the enemy we don't view people that have less truth as our enemies we don't view them as our enemies we view ourselves with the heavy responsibility to whom much has been given much is required and so i don't view people that have less truth is my enemy i view them as my responsibility to witness to them and i like the fact that somehow even though peter peter preached and said you're guilty of the murder uh you're guilty of the death of the lord and savior jesus christ there's a little golden nugget right here that they said men and brethren what shall we do sounds like even though they were up on opposite sides of the fence they could still view themselves as friends men and brethren what shall we do and peter laid out the new testament plan of salvation he told them that they would need to repent repent repent means to have a change of mind to change your view repentance also means to be stricken to be stricken with sorrow over the way that one has lived his life to be stricken with sorrow over the way that one has lived his life to change his view to live his life in a different direction to be stricken with sorrow not sorry there's a difference there's a difference in being sorry over your sins and being sorry you got caught it's a big difference it's kind of like love and lust it might look the same but it's not there's a difference in truly being sorry for the way that you lived and sorry you got caught he said you are to repent you are to be stricken with sorrow you're to change your view about your life and about how you've lived your life and then you are to be baptized immersed in water put completely under the water in the name of jesus christ for the remission of your sins now i want to challenge everyone tonight you you've come in this apostolic church and you think well years ago i got baptized you would do yourself a spiritual a spiritual benefit to call whoever baptized you or the church and ask them did you baptize me in jesus name did you say the name of jesus christ and if they said yes ask them the second question because the second question is just as important as the first did you baptize me for the remission of my sins because it's not enough just to be baptized calling out jesus over you you need to be baptized according to the scripture you need to be baptized immersed having someone call the name of jesus christ out over you and calling out for the remission of sins now some have asked is it necessary to speak that out i always want anyone that baptizes here to speak that part out you say why because i want the person there to know why they're being baptized it is for the remission of sins it is not to join a church nowhere in the bible do you find someone being baptized to join a church it is not it is not to show an outward sign of an inward experience it is for the remission of your sin so when someone may ask you why do you all baptize in jesus name you can say it is for the remission of sins my sins were remitted uh when i was baptized in jesus name and then we are promised we qualify our lives for the promise of the holy ghost for the promise of the holy ghost now this is the new testament plan of salvation and we have we have a responsibility to witness this truth to others there's a lot of sincere people in our county there's a lot of sincere people that sincerely have been told and that they are saved they've sincerely been told to do this right here and you're saved and they sincerely believe that it is our responsibility to shed light upon those sincere people and let them know brother there's more sister there's more because what matters is not that i can prove my salvation about my based on my emotions what matters is that i can prove my salvation based on the word of god it should be the word of god that i can go to and say i was baptized because it says it here in this word and we have a responsibility i think too many times we get our mind on judging people when we need to get our minds on witnessing to people leave the judging leave the judging up to god we just need to witness to people that this is the truth this is the new testament way if peter was resurrected tonight and came to church peter would tell you that this was what he preached on the day of pentecost it's connected to salvation the word saved is connected to what i have read in the if you would turn with me to the 11th chapter of the book of acts and verse number one now let me give you a little background the 11th chapter of the book of acts deals with peter drawing criticism from his jewish brethren because he went to a gentile's house this gentile's name was cornelius and peter went to this gentile's house went into his house and preached the gospel the holy ghost fell acts 10 44-48 while peter preached the death burial and resurrection of jesus christ the holy ghost fell and they peter it says between verse 44 and 48 that they heard them speak in other tongues and magnify god and then peter commanded them the word command is there he didn't suggest that they do it he commanded them to do it well later on some of peter's jewish brethren begin to criticize peter for going to the gentiles acts chapter 11 is peter pleading his case before them verse number one and the apostles chapter 11 and the apostles and brethren that were in judea heard that the gentiles had also received the word of god and when peter was come up to jerusalem they that were of the circumcision contended with him his his his jewish friends argued with him debated with him saying thou wentest into men uncircumcised and did eat with them but peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning and expounded it by order unto them saying i was in the city of joppa praying and in a trance i saw a vision a certain vessel descend as it had been a great sheep let down from heaven by four corners and it came even to me upon the witch i when i had fastened mine eyes i considered and saw four-footed beasts of the earth and wild beasts and creeping things and fouls of the air i heard a voice saying unto me arise peter slay and eat but i said not so lord for nothing common or unclean hat at any time entered into my mouth but the voice answered me again from heaven what god hath cleansed that call not thou common and this was done three times and all were drawn up again into heaven and behold immediately there were three men already come unto the house where i was sent from caesarea unto me and the spirit bade me go with them nothing doubting moreover these six brethren accompanied me and we entered into the man's house now these six men were witnesses peter took six jewish witnesses with him and these accompanied me and we entered into the man's house now here the jews go under the roof of the gentile and he the gentile showed us how he had seen an angel in his house which stood and said unto him send men to joppa and call for simon whose surname is peter now here's the angel talking now talking to cornelius who shall verse number 14 who shall tell thee words whereby thou and all thy house shall be what saved so what peter preached in acts chapter 10 had to do with salvation the angel said to cornelius you sinned and get peter and he's going to come and tell your house how to get saved and as i begin now peter is speaking verse 15 and as i begin to speak the holy ghost fell on them as on us at the beginning this was a few years later and peter said as i was speaking the holy ghost fell on them as it fell on us at the beginning so we understand that acts chapter 2 verse 36 through 39 the first message that was given in the church had to do with repentance water baptism in jesus name for the remission of your sins and the receiving of the gift of the holy ghost which was evidence initial evidence of speaking in another tongue as a matter of fact if you would just turn back to acts chapter 10 and verse number 42 acts chapter 10 get the scenery it'd be real good if you got the scenery in your mind peter six more jewish men in the house of the gentiles and cornelius has called several of his family there and peter begins to tell them about this man named jesus and that how this man named jesus came and died and rose again and then he mentions what i taught on sunday morning faith belief and the bible says in acts 10 did i tell you 43 is that the verse i gave you acts chapter 10 43 listen to peter to him give all the prophets witness to jesus give all the prophets witness that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins while peter yet spake these words the holy ghost fell on all them which heard the word peter wasn't even finished preaching he wasn't even finished preaching now there's a little bit of discussion of why the holy ghost interrupted peter's sermon some believe that peter may not have offered them salvation the way that he did that he might have just come and preached christ to them and left it there but while he was preaching i just get the scenery with me now while he's preaching these people fell under conviction and it's nothing different than uh back then as it is today you see people get under convictions sometimes they start crying they'll start wiping tears out of their face sometimes they will visibly visibly be shaken and and about their head and no doubt while peter's preaching the holy ghost starts to deal with cornelius and and although the scripture doesn't say it i believe we can see it i believe that when he hit that word whosoever i believe that ignited something in cornelius and he just believed it maybe he said thank you jesus i i don't know it's not recorded but it is recorded that while peter yet spake these words the holy ghost fell on all them which heard the word and they of the circumcision this is the jews which believe were astonished their minds were blown they standing there with peter they had been brought as witnesses and as they looked their might they were astonished why because that on the gentiles also was poured out the gift of the holy ghost how did they know they received the holy ghost how did they know for that next verse for they heard them speak with tongues and magnify god then answered peter how did they know they got the holy ghost well we read chapter 11 where peter said they got it just like we did at the beginning and when these men begin to speak in other tongues and glorify god they knew they had received the holy ghost but then the bible said then answered peter can any man forbid water in other words he looks he's talking to the six jewish friends he said i want to know is any of you could you deny forbid water forbid water that these should not be baptized which have received the holy ghost as well as we you see there's a there's a chain that that i that the reason i want to call i want to be labeled apostolic pentecost is because what we believe tonight doesn't go back to azusa street now i thank god for azusa street thank god for topeka kansas thank god for all the the outpourings of the holy ghost around the world but we don't go back to azusa street and we don't go back to topeka kansas we go all the way back to the book of acts acts chapter 2 and i'm glad tonight to say we get the holy ghost just like they did in the book of acts tell it people tell it church get it out of the highways get it out to your family members what this world needs today is the acts 238 holy ghost experience that's that will put joy that will mend marriages that will deliver people from their sins they need to hear that message tell it people tell it people tell it tell it i'm glad tonight i'm glad tonight to be linked to 2 000 years ago to be linked 2 000 years ago then the bible says verse number 48 and he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the lord then pray they him to tarry certain days again cornelius said the angel said send to peter and he will tell you words whereby your house can be saved can you say amen now water and spirit water and spirit would you say that with me today water water and spirit water and spirit play a role in your salvation let's turn to john the gospel of john chapter number three and verse number one there was a man of the pharisees named nicodemus a ruler of the jews the same came to jesus by night and said unto him rabbi we know that thou art a teacher come from god for no man can do these miracles that thou doest except god be with him jesus answered and said unto him verily verily and i've taught this before but verily was away brother naomi of getting your attention it said hey we won't say so hey and verily it was a way of getting your attention but anytime you see verily doubled verily verily the speaker is saying hey hey i want i want your attention on me hey i i want your undivided verily verily i say unto thee except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of god what jesus is saying to nicodemus he said you think you see the kingdom of god matter of fact we already know how far off he is it wasn't it wasn't god with him it was god in him he said no man can do the miracles you're doing except god be with him well he's off already because it's not god with him it's god in him and so he says to him he says very very pay attention to me now verily verily he said i say unto you except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of god nicodemus you need to be born again to see the kingdom of god nicodemus saith unto him how can i can can a a man be born when he's old can he enter the second time into his mother's womb and be born he has he's in the natural now he said could i enter my mother's womb again and be born jesus answered look at verse 5 verily verily i say unto thee except a man be born now would anyone doubt anyone question that what's the subject the new birth being born again nicodemus says jesus could i enter my mother's womb and be born again now jesus is going to tell him how to be born again he's going to tell him how to be born again verily verily i say unto thee except a man be born of water and of the spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of god now water means water here and spirit means spirit here it means born again of water and of the spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of god that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the spirit is spirit to birth a natural birth and a spiritual birth often said born once die twice born once you die one time physically and the second time you'll die a spiritual death of eternal damnation but born twice only you may die once and that is you will not suffer the death of eternal damnation because you are born again that which is born of the flesh is flesh that which is born of the spirit of spirit look at verse seven marvel marvel that word there means uh uh to be puzzled to have your to to to have your mind blown to to marvel to see something so great that you can't comprehend it marvel not that i said unto thee ye must be born again you must be born again now listen to the analogy the wind bloweth where it listeth or where will you hear the sound thereof but can't not tell whence it cometh and whether it goeth so is everyone that is born of the spirit listen to jesus now he said when you're born of the spirit it's as mysterious as the wind it you you don't know when it where it comes and where it goes but you know one thing you hear the sound thereof there is a sound when someone is born of the spirit he said you hear the sound thereof verse 9 nicodemus answered and said unto him how can these things be now he's a religious man how can these things be you see we have the responsibility that when people are marveling about the plan of salvation and saying how can these things be we have the responsibility to be a witness nicodemus said how can these things be jesus answered and said unto him art thou a master of israel and knowest not these things now what he was saying there even ezekiel you can study ezekiel and jeremiah and you can find out where god said the day will come when i will take out of you a stony heart and i'll give you a heart of flesh and i'll sprinkle water upon you and i'll put my spirit within you and so what jesus was saying is here you study ezekiel and you study all this and you don't know that there's coming a new a new birth verse 11 verily verily i say unto thee we speak that we do know and testify that we have seen and you receive not our witness he said i'm trying to tell you and you're not receiving it you're you're not receiving it but he said i've told you this and you have not received you have not received this now oh lord help me tonight um not everybody's going to receive the truth not not everybody is going to receive it now just because one person doesn't receive it does it mean that we shouldn't keep on telling it just keep on telling it sure there are going to be those that won't receive it they didn't receive jesus are we think we're much any better than he if they didn't receive him they won't receive us but the one that does receive us is worth a million they haven't received us jesus said verse 12 if i have told you earthly things and ye believe not you see the issue here see the issue the issue with nicodemus wasn't understanding it was believing i've told you earthly things and you believe not how shall ye believe if i tell you of heavenly things now what he meant when he said i told you earthly things he said i broke it down to you i told you you had to be born of water you understand water water is something that is essential to life i said you have to be you have to be born again of the water and of the spirit and then he said i explained it to you in a in a natural way i talked to you about the wind he said if i have told you earthly things and you believe not how shall you believe if i tell you of heavenly things now he's about to tell you something heavenly he's about to tell nicodemus something heavenly about himself listen to it listen closely jesus said and no man hath ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the son of man which is in heaven he said would you you couldn't comprehend if i told you that i've come down from heaven and i'm standing on earth and i'm already back in heaven how can he do that as god as god he can be both past present and future he said i tried to tell you about the wind now i'm going to blow your mind when i tell you that no man had ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the son of man that is in heaven he talked about his omni presence to nicodemus and then verse 13 and no man has sent it up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the son of man which is in heaven and as moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the son of man be lifted up that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life for god sent not his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved he that believeth on him is not condemned but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten son of god and this is the condemnation that light has come into the world and men loved darkness rather than light because the deeds were evil for everyone that doeth evil hateth the light neither cometh to the light lest his deeds should be reproved but he that doeth truth cometh to the light that his deeds may be manifest that they are wrought in god after these things came jesus and his disciples into the land of judea and there he tarried with them and baptized now what i read all of that to tell you is that we will be asked about john 3 16. we believe in john 3 16. but put john 3 16 in its proper order john 3 16 was the foundational message to a man named nicodemus that did not understand the new birth of the water and of the spirit and he took him all the way back to moses lifting up the serpent in the wilderness and how that that became an old testament typology it became an old testament typology of new testament salvation because moses put up made a br brass serpent put it on a pole and everyone that came and looked upon that brass serpent was healed and in the new testament jesus christ hung on a cross and that's our starting point that's where we start aren't you thankful that our salvation starts in jesus it starts in jesus well let's look at let's look at the apostle paul both before and after if you would if you would turn to acts chapter nine uh verse number one and i may ask you a few questions as i teach for the next few moments acts chapter nine and verse number 1 and saul of course he would later become paul yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the lord went unto the high priest desired him letters to damascus to the synagogues that if he found any of this way whether they were men or women he might bring them bound unto jerusalem now no one i mean everybody understands right now saul is not saved saul is not saved so he comes down a light knocks him off the beast that he's writing in verse number four he heard the voice say saul saul why persecutest thou me he said who art thou lord and the lord said i am jesus whom thou persecute it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks and he trembling and astonished said lord what will thou have me to do and the lord said arise and go into the city and it shall be told thee what thou must do now please understand saul is not new testamently saved yet he is on his way but he is not there and scripture is going to scripture is going to bear this out now turn with me to acts chapter 22 and i want saul who is now paul who is giving his testimony he is giving his testimony acts chapter 22 and verse number 7 he is giving his testimony and he says and i fell into the ground and heard a voice saying unto me saul saul why persecutest thou me and i answered who art thou lord and he said unto me i am jesus of nazareth whom thou persecuted and when they that were with me saw indeed the light and were afraid but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me and i said what shall i do lord and the lord said unto me arise and go into damascus and there it shall be told of thee all things which are appointed for thee to do and when i could not see for the glory of that light and being led by the hand of them that were with me i came into damascus and one ananias a devout man according to the law having a good report of all the jews which dwelt there came unto me and stood and said unto me brother saul received thy sight in the same hour i looked up upon him and he said the god of our fathers have chosen thee that thou should us know his will and see that just one and should has hear his voice of his mouth for thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou has seen and heard and now why tarriest thou he said why are you tearing arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins calling on the name of the lord church even though saul had a wonderful damascus road experience he still wasn't saved although he said lord what will you have me do he still had his sins are you hearing me tonight he still had his sins i thank god for wonderful experiences that should be drawing people to god but finally ananias had to say to him what are you waiting on god has a calling for you but you can't get started on that calling until you arise and be baptized calling on the name of the lord and washing away our your sins questions apostolic people are asked baptism is for the remission of your sins will you say brother carpenter it doesn't say in these verses here that he got the holy ghost and spoke in tongues no no it doesn't it doesn't but you know there is what's called in my opinion it's not in major bible commentaries yet maybe i'll die one day and it'll be put in there but i call it the law of common sense you see i don't have to say as brother sister sister snitzer are making their way to our house i don't have to say there comes brother art and sister debbie in a car with wheels on it why would i say there they come in a car they've got doors on it there they come in a car that's got windows in it why because it's already a proven fact if it's got a car it's got weak it's a car it's got wheels it's got doors well most of them do i know there's some jeep people here that would debate that issue it's already been established in a pattern acts chapter 2 they received the holy ghost and spoke in tongues acts chapter 10 they received the holy ghost and spoke in tongues acts chapter 19 they got the holy ghost and spoke in tongues so it's not being written from the god approve this it's already been settled and so it says he received the spirit but now we do know turn with me to first corinthians 14 in verse number 18 if there's anyone that would want to debate that well it never specifically says paul spoke in other tongues well first corinthians chapter 14 and verse number 18 is the writing of the apostle paul to the church at corinth and he says in first corinthians 14 and verse number 18 if you see it on the screen why don't you read it with me i thank my god i speak with tongues more so thank god paul was baptized writer of over half the new testament bible believed upon the lord jesus christ repented of his slandering ways to the church and was water baptized in the name of jesus christ washing away his sins and he received the wonderful gift of the holy ghost and spoke in a heavenly language i'm going to close with this how many of us after we say about baptism hypothetically you know we have all kind of hypothetical things well what about if you're out in the middle of the desert and there's no water and all of that's hypothetical and i'll tell you how you can answer that say well i'll answer this what about somebody that's standing right here right now with water 20 feet from them what will god have to say about that but have any of you been asked when you tell the plan of salvation well the thief on the cross thief on the cross wasn't baptized thief on the cross didn't get the holy ghost that's exactly you're exactly right it was a different dispensation it was under the law you see there are seven dispensations if you read all through the bible you'll find the first dispensation a dispensation is a period of time that god dealt with man in a particular way he had he had he had laws he had rules for how man was to live in that dispensation and if they would have lived that way they would have life but every dispensation would end in judgment the first dispensation was innocence all adam and eve had to do was be obedient they had one rule don't eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil but they broke that one law and the eighth of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and judgment came they were expelled from the garden of eden and the second dispensation started and the second dispensation of time god judged man with his conscience conscience that word conscience is broke down into two small words concealed in science inner knowledge the inner knowledge a man had but the bible what the bible goes on says and every man did that was right in his own eyes until god looked down upon an earth that he had made and god even repented and changed his mind that he made the earth and the second dispensation of conscience ended with the worldwide flood the third dispensation was human government god allowed man to understand that man was made in the image of god and that if a man took a life of another man by man's hand his life was taken but god also told during the dispensation of human government that man was to go forth and spread abroad and repopulate the earth but man decided differently man decided to build a tower that would reach the top and when man failed to do what god said to do god came down and confused their languages and human government ended in them being dispersed throughout the world at the tower of babel the fourth dispensation was promised he made a promise to a man named abram and abram made a promise to god and god dealt with man until abram abraham had a son isaac and isaac had a son jacob and jacob had 12 sons and they ended up down in egypt and it was there in egypt that promise ended promise ended in egyptian bondage but then the next dispensation started with was the dispensation of law god wrote his law on a piece of stone and told delivered people to live to live by this law but the law could not work because the law had to go through the flesh and the flesh was weak and powerless and it was there that the bible tells us the bible tells us this in galatians 3 and 3 christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us for it is written cursed is every one that hang up on a tree and romans 10 and 4 for christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth can i tell you that when that thief hung on that cross beside jesus christ they were just a few days away from a new dispensation but that thief fell under the law dispensation and there's two scriptures that i'm going to read and and there there are two scriptures that i would i would like to read for you tonight and uh number one the one scripture is in romans where he says i will have mercy god says i will have mercy upon whom i will have mercy and the other scripture is when they let the man down through the the roof and when they let him down through the roof jesus looked at him and said i say to you son your sins are forgiven and when he said your sins are forgiven most of the pharisees almost had a cardiac arrest they looked around each other and said who but god can forgive sins well they were right he was god and he had the power to forgive sins even though it was under the law he could look and say i'll have mercy upon whom i'll have mercy if i want to have mercy on a repented thief on the cross i'll have mercy upon him and i'll say this day you be with me in paradise but church we're under the grace dispensation and grace means strength grace means government i'm under the government of the lord jesus christ he is my great potentate he's the governor of mount zion i'm under the rulership of jesus christ his death his burial his resurrection and i identify he died on a cross i die in the altar he was buried in a tomb i was buried in the baptismal tank he rose again on the third day i rose again and was received the gift of the holy ghost i'm so glad i know who jesus is tonight if you're not already standing would you stand with me right now and would you begin to magnify the lord i thank you god i thank you for the plan of salvation i thank you for the grace dispensation i thank you that there's strength in the name of jesus there's power in the name of jesus the weak sinner can find strength when he calls on the name of jesus hallelujah hallelujah i'm going to tell you there's a witness of the holy ghost right now there's a witness of the holy ghost right now come on there's strength in the name of jesus there's power in the name of jesus oh jesus help me oh jesus strengthened me there's power in the name of jesus oh it's whatever sinner needs tonight every sinner needs to know there's power in the name of jesus every person that has tried religion and has given up needs to know there's power in a trip to the altar there's power and dying out to sin every sinner that has given up needs to know there's power when you go down in the name of jesus there's power when you receive the gift of the holy ghost there's power there's power there's power there's power now every dispensation has ended with judgment innocence ended with being expelled from the garden conscience ended by the flood human government ended by the dispersion at the tower of babel promise ended by egyptian bondage the law ended when a man god robed in flesh hung on a cross and 50 days later a brand new dispensation opened up that you're living in right now it's called the grace dispensation and when peter boy don't you feel that tonight aren't you glad you're living in the grace dispensation oh yes and this dispensation will end in tribulation in lend and tribulation but just before that tribulation god's going to call his church out of here and if that same spirit that dwelt in christ dwell in you he shall quicken your mortal bodies thank you god oh we got a responsibility to tell the world oh tell it church go to work tomorrow and tell it tell it to your neighbors tell it to your family tell it to people that are lost hopelessly in their sin tell it tell it tell it tell it tell it everybody ought to know who jesus is questions that apostolics are asked at any time and i'll just close with this but on the young minds the enemy plays brother carpenter if this is the right way then man there's a lot of people that are not obeying it but just turn your clock just turn your eyes to the days of noah it was a lot of people but there was one man that found grace in the eyes of the lord first thing you ought to do is to just thank god before you leave here tonight that god of all the billions of people that are living and that have lived that you've been privileged god must have saw something in you tell it tell it witness it share it tell it tonight tell it tonight willis let's just pray for a moment before we go home oh god thank you lord that i know the truth oh ha ha ha ha yeah lord thank you god that i know the truth lord oh god thank you lord that i know the truth thank you god that you saw something in us tonight god you saw something in us god god we're not concerned with blending in god lord we want to stand out as a city on a hill god with a message lord god i thank you tonight i thank you tonight lord come on thank him right now one way to keep what you got is to be thankful for it keep what you got is to be thank you thank you that i've been baptized in jesus name thank you that i received the gift of the holy ghost thank you god that i've got to i'm going to tell it i'm going to tell it god now father i pray tonight lord that you'll take us from his place and god keeps us all safe as we travel home but lord most of all as we go about our work week tomorrow and friday and saturday god if we we be mindful of those that need what's been said here tonight lord what this world needs is to hear the grace message of salvation of the new birth lord god lead us to hungry people father we know that there'll be those that won't receive the witness but god for that one that will receive it help us god to find them and help us lord to witness to them in jesus mighty name we pray amen and amen god bless you dismissed in jesus name tonight
