Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
The apostolic message, and the text
- He opens by telling the church where he has been: out of town preaching alongside Bishop David Bernard, the two fellowships yoked up together in one body — and before he will read his text he insists on saying the great apostolic message that all the world needs to hear.
- Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost — tell it, preach it, teach it, put it on the radio, on television, on the website; print it, witness it.
- His text is Matthew 5:4, read and then repeated by the whole congregation together: blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Scriptures: Acts 2:38; Matthew 5:4
Blessed are they that mourn
- The first beatitude is the doorway to the second: blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God — when God gets a man into a beggar's form, understanding there is no salvation without him, the next thing he introduces to his life is mourning for his sins.
- Mourning is by definition a deep sense of grief and anguish; God desires that we mourn over our sins, and that we mourn over the suffering of others — the old-timers called the altar the mourner's bench, and a man or woman making their way to it was known to be coming to mourn.
- Mourning is a pathway, a road, a route you must travel to get to your spiritual wholeness; it is not your destination: you will be on Mourning Street for a certain time, but you are not always going to be there, for they shall be comforted.
- The wise man fixed its season: a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance — and the psalmists travelled the path: I am troubled, I am bowed down greatly, I go mourning all the day long; and, why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
Scriptures: Matthew 5:3; Ecclesiastes 3:4; Psalm 38:6; Psalm 42:9
Sorrow and mourning shall flee away
- The redeemed of the Lord shall return and come with singing unto Zion, and everlasting joy shall be upon their head; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and mourning shall flee away — the travellers come through mourning to the road of wholeness, of joy, of singing.
- Thy sun shall no more go down, neither shall thy moon withdraw itself, for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.
- God appoints unto them that mourn in Zion beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness: before you get your beauty you have the ashes — the leftover of what used to be — and if you will truly mourn when you bring those ashes to God, he will make the exchange.
- Memory and grief go hand in hand: God does not have to erase the memory of what you did, because he has designed grace to lift the sin and the condemnation while the memory remains — and the memory can serve to keep you on the right path.
Scriptures: Isaiah 51:11; Isaiah 60:20; Isaiah 61:3
He came to himself
- The prodigal spent all, and when the mighty famine arose he began to be in want; he joined himself to a citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine, and he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat, and no man gave unto him.
- And when he came to himself — he was not himself when he left, for nobody in their right mind leaves grace — he remembered the father's house: how many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger; I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
- A man can be in the church and remember the sins he committed, and a man can be in the world and remember the grace he once enjoyed: Kenny Johnson was raised in this church by his mother, backslid, and found the church had not left him; when he got right with God he brought his wife, who did not believe it was real until the Holy Ghost got on her — she received the Holy Ghost and was baptized, and became one of the greatest Christians in this church.
- The prodigal had a season of mourning, but at the father's house the time of mourning is over: bring the ring, bring the robe, bring the shoes.
Scriptures: Luke 15:14-19
Redemption in the remembrance
- Redemption is in the remembrance: to the church in the book of Revelation Jesus says, nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love — remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; a church or a believer who remembers when they used to pray and tarry, and no longer does, has forgotten to keep mourning, for in every believer there dwelleth no good thing, and we must come to the mourner's bench every day.
- It was memory that reached Samson, blinded and grinding in the Philistines' house, brought out to be made sport of: and Samson called unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes — and God did remember him, and gave him his finest moment after his failure, for God remembers the good in a life and not only the bad.
- A man crucified, within minutes of dying, said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom — and Jesus said unto him, verily I say unto thee, today shalt thou be with me in paradise: he would never give in an offering or teach a class, but there is redemption in the remembrance even with minutes left, because God is a good God who takes a man as he is in order to fix him.
Scriptures: Revelation 2:4-5; Judges 16:28; Luke 23:42-43
They shall be comforted
- Comforted means to be drawn to one side — drawn to the side of Jesus Christ — and the first way of comfort is the word: whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope; Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
- The second way is the Comforter himself: I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever — the Holy Ghost is a comforter even when you are not speaking in tongues; tongues is the initial sign that you received the gift, but after the sign comes the fruit.
- The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
- The third way is one another: Paul sent a beloved brother, a faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord, that he might know your estate and comfort your hearts, and sent another brother and minister of God to establish you and to comfort you — we are a body, connected, and part of the body is to comfort; if the sun is shining on your life and it is not shining on a brother, pray for him.
- And the final comfort is the coming of the Lord: the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first, then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds — wherefore comfort one another with these words; a brother whose father passed away last night is in the house tonight, sad, but not sorrowing as others which have no hope.
- He closes the lesson by sending the church to pray for one another where they sit — man to man, woman to woman, a hand laid on a brother or sister — before the closing song and the dismissal prayer.

town preaching and we were so honored to be uh yoked up um i hold the title of the general superintendent of the assemblies of the lord jesus christ and i was so honored to be yoked up with bishop david bernard who is the general superintendent of the united pentecostal church and we yoked up together in the great state of florida and we preach together and and uh it's so true what we are we are two fellowships in one body we're two fellowships in one body and you know i'm for anything that advances the cause of jesus christ and you know when we come together we advance the cause of jesus christ the great apostolic message oh i i can't i'm not i'm not gonna read my text tonight till i say it all the world needs to hear this all the world needs to hear this then peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the remission of your sins and you shall receive the gift of the holy ghost somebody tell it tell it tell it preach it teach it put it on the radio put it on television put it on the website print it tell it witness was my wife and i were coming in and playing today and i believe using every opportunity we can to let folks know who we are and there was a man sitting beside me and he was telling the man sitting on the other side of him all the drinking he was gonna do when he got here to knoxville and he turned and he said what are you gonna do i said well i'm getting ready for a bible study tonight he said you kidding i said oh i'm not so he introduced to half the plane that i was getting ready for a bible study tonight thank you god can even take a man that's going to get drunk and advertise an apostolic preacher on a plane is it god good tonight he is so good matthew chapter five verse four you've been standing matthew chapter five and verse number four blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted it's a short verse why don't we all just say it together could we say it together it's going to be so loud in here right now when we say it together everybody's going to participate in this you know blessed are they that for they father in the name of jesus tonight bless our hearts with your word lord i pray that you would minister god through me tonight lift up those that might be discouraged lord those that just simply need to know the ways of god lord let your ways be so clear with us tonight we'll give you praise give you honor and give you glory in jesus name please touch me god in jesus name amen you may be seated tonight a young minister got to a church service after the praise and worship the guest speaker that night was about to take the pulpit but before the guest speaker was introduced to the congregation the young man that had got there late past the praise and worship said to him but so and so i'm sorry i'm late but at least i made it for the best part of which the seasoned speaker said the best part for who you see during praise and worship is when we tell our god how much we love him it's during the word that our god tells us how much he loves us so the best part for who i'm glad we told him tonight and we worshiped him read last week blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of god we talked about being a beggar we talked about being absolutely hopelessly indebted and without hope we needed him the second beatitude goes like this blessed are they that mourn oh by the way i've chosen for a title tonight redemption in the remembrance redemption redemption in the remembrance the word mourning is simply by definition it is a deep sense of grief and anguish mourning is simply a deep rooted sense and an awareness of grief and anguish there's two reasons to mourn mourning is biblical mourning is something that god desires for us to do there's two reasons to have a deep sense of grief and anguish number one god desires that we mourn over our sins we have a deep grief and anguish over our sins as i begin to study for tonight an old word came back an old phrase came back now i am nowhere near old enough to remember when this was used in this term but i have been blessed to rub shoulders with older people that use the term we use the term would you come to the altar years ago they said would you come to the mourner's bench was it called the altar was it called the altar it was called the mourner's bench 75 80 years ago men gave an appeal at the end and they didn't say would you gather up around the altar with me no they invited people to come to the mourner's bench if you've seen a man or a woman make their way down to the mourners bench you knew that they were coming to mourn they were coming because of a deep sense of grief and anguish over their sins the second reason that he wants us to mourn is over the suffering of others but i want you to know this evening that morning is a pathway to your complete wholeness mourning is a pathway it is a road it is a route that you must travel in order to get to your spiritual wholeness you can't get to spiritual wholeness any other way but by the route or the pathway of mourning don't ever you can figure it out tonight if you're wondering i don't know what's really wrong with my walk with god i can't seem to get it together i want to ask you something have you mourned has there been a deep sense of grief and anguish have you looked at your sin long enough because we want we want to quickly remove it and understandably so but sometimes god wants us to mourn he wants us to look at our sin long enough to see the sin for what it is mourning is a pathway it is a road it's it's it's just like me giving you directions from sevierville to this church i'm going to give you some direction some roads to get on but because you get on chapman highway doesn't mean you're going to always be on chapman highway you're going to make a turn on wye road all right you see some people want to stay away from the pathway of mourning because they get in their mind that if i'm going to live for god i'm going to always be on the pathway of mourning no you're not you're not always going to be on that pathway jesus said blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted they're going to get to a spot they're going to get to their destination let me tell you and anna if you if you if you could just remember one line of discernment and i remember this morning is not your destination it is not your destination spiritual wholeness health in your spirit your soul and even in your body can be tied in to that simple morning it is not your destination get it out of your motto you know living for god's got to be a mournful thing i'm going to always be sad i'm going to always be in deep regret no you're not you are going to go there for a season write it down mourning is not your destination it's not your destination ecclesiastes chapter 3 and verse 4 the wise man said it this way he said there is a time to weep a time to laugh a time to mourn and a time to dance you see i may tell you driving from sevierville to the miracle church if you're unfamiliar i may say you're going to be about five minutes on chapman highway can i tell you on your road to spiritual wholeness and health you're going to be a certain time on morning street but it's not always going to be there he said it'll be a time to weep because again i want to say it morning is a pathway would you say that word pathway morning is a pathway to spiritual wholeness and healing but they're not my destination i will have to have grief and i will have to have sorrow but it's not my destination i'm on the road but it's not my destination let me show you several psalms that bear this out psalms 38 6 i am troubled i am bowed down greatly i go mourning all the day long it's a path psalms 42 9 i will say unto god my rock why hast thou forgotten me why look at the words go i mourning because of the oppression of the enemy isaiah 51 and verse 11 and again i'm using all these scriptures to tell you tonight that your pathway to wholeness has a season of mourning all of us the pathway of mourning whether you are mourning over your original sins of coming to god whether you have mourned about your your you've made that decision to repent of your sins and there's anguish and there's grief and there's regret that you've wasted your life you see anyone that gets true bible salvation has one regret why didn't i do this sooner why didn't i give my life to god sooner why didn't i do you we listen if you haven't yet given your heart to god and and faced your sins and and mourned and seen the the light of it when you do and you're truly bible born again you will say why didn't i do this years ago isn't living for god wonderful church isn't living for god wonderful is it just wonderful to live for god i go a morning isaiah 51 11 watch how isaiah presents it therefore the redeemed of the lord shall return and come with singing and design and everlasting joy shall be upon their head they shall obtain gladness and joy watch this and sorrow and mourning shall flee away he said no way brother carpenter isn't that contradicting what you're saying oh no it's actually backing up what i'm saying because the person here or the people here travel down a road of mourning over their sin but again mourning sorrow grief is not your destination it's going to lead you to the road of wholeness to the road of joy to the road of singing and he says it here everlasting joy shall be upon their head let's go on over to isaiah 60 and verse number 20. look at it again thy sun shall go no more down neither shall thy moon withdraw itself for the lord shall be thou an everlasting light and the days of mourning shall be ended it's not contradicting what i'm saying it's proving what i'm saying no wonder jesus said the first beatitude blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of god he said when i get you in a beggar's form when i get you understanding that you are you there's no way that you can have salvation without me the next thing i want to introduce to your life i want you to be able to mourn for your sins you know if we don't mourn over our sin we're bound to repeat our sins if we don't see the seriousness of our sins you know what we're bound to do we're bound to go right back and repeat it all over again but oh god keep us on the road of mourning keep me o god looking at my sin until finally god says all right son you've looked at it enough now it's time to sing again it's time to laugh again it's time to be whole again it's time to have the joy of the lord again again i can't get out of the book of isaiah chapter 61 isaiah chapter 61 verse number three look at what god god does to appoint unto them that do what what do they do mourning where that's the church mourn in zion to appoint unto them that mourn in zion to give unto them beauty for ashes the all of joy for mourning the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness that they might be called trees of the right of righteousness the planting of the lord that he might be glorified you understand that before you get your beauty you have the ashes what are the ashes the ashes are the leftover of what used to be sometimes i have to bring ashes to god but if i'll truly mourn when i bring those ashes to god guess what god will give me he said i'll give you beauty for ashes the oil of joy for mourning you see memory and grief go hand in hand memory and grief hand in hand people say well i built her i just can't forget this do you know that may be just a blessing for you maybe god doesn't want us to forget because it can be memory and grief that turns us in the right direction so i have a hard time believing god's forgiving me because i still remember it god says i want you to remember it i i've designed your mind to be able to remember but i've also designed grace that on one side of your mind can be the memory of what you did wrong but on the other side of your mind i can put the anointing of grace and salvation and take away the condemnation that wonderful let's let's just sink in for a moment god is able see before we had salvation we had the knowledge of sin and the condemnation the weight of sin the weight of sin we have that upon us but when we when we embrace salvation god lifts our sin still got the memory of what i did but when he lifts our sin he lifts the condemnation of our sin so it is possible tonight don't ever keep praying oh i just don't believe god's forgiven me because i just keep remembering it no memory and grief can serve to keep you on the right path you do realize in luke 15 14 this is the story of the prodigal son in luke 15 14 it says this and when he had spent all there arose a mighty famine in that land and he began to be in want he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country and he sent him into his fields to feed swine and he would have famed having filled his belly with the hust that the swine did eat and no man gave unto him you talk about being totally humiliated you talk about egg on your face you talk about a young cocky young man who demands of his father give me what belongs to me i'm going i know better than you i know more than you i'm gonna make a way only to find himself broke busted and disgusted all right only to find himself only to find himself feeding swine and would have gladly eaten what the slime would eat but what happened to him what happened to him verse 17 and when he came to himself and when he came to himself you know what that tells me right there he wasn't himself when he left you see nobody in their right mind leaves grace nobody in their right mind leaves the best thing on planet earth nobody in the right mind does this but you can get in the wrong mind and think there's something out there you're missing out on which there is there's a lot of heartache and grief scars that god never intended you to have that's out there and he went out there but he finds himself in a hog pin gladly would have eaten what the hogs were eating and when he came to himself he said how many hired servants of my father have bred enough despair can i tell you something not only can you be in the church and remember the sins you committed you can also be in the world and remember the grace you once enjoyed you can be in the world listen i believe with all my heart my back we got a testimony kenny and sherry johnson kenny johnson was brought up his mother wilma pennington was brought and brought him up brought kenny up in the church so kenny johnson decides he backslides he gets out of church but church didn't get out of him he starts dating a young little catholic girl and they start going to the bars the little catholic girl who's now the principal of our school she'd begin to notice when kenny get into bars and get drunk he won't argue happens in bars he'd want to argue you know we want to argue about that one god and there's not a trinity there's only one here to get our arguments well you know what just because he left the church didn't mean the church left him and when he got ready to get right with god he brought his little he brought his wife over to mcginley street she came in really didn't believe really didn't believe there was a long testimony there she really she thought it was all a show we was putting on until the holy ghost got on her she got the holy ghost got baptized one of the greatest christians that goes to this church here can you give god a hand right now for all of his praise it's possible this to be in the world and remember what you had in the church he came to himself he said how many hired servants of my father have bread enough to spare watch what he he remembers the servants and they had bread and he said i perish with hunger i will arise and go to my father and will say unto him father i have sinned against heaven and before thee and am no more worthy to be called thy son make me as one of the hired hired servants don't you know that he had grief of mine don't you know tyler when that boy looked down at the pigs but you know when that boy looked down and was so hungry that he would have gladly scooped up whatever the pigs were eating don't you know he had regret don't you know he had more he he was mourning man what a fool can you hear him now with me i'm am i stretching this tonight can you hear him now brother dwayne as a fool to leave the father's house i was a fool to leave look i'm i'm out here herding the swine i'm out here in the pig piano eyes of fool and all of a sudden it begins to think the servants in my father's house i'm talking about the hired help the minimum wage people in my father's house have enough bread and despair and here i am a son and i'm perishing with hunger can i tell you the memory of the father's house that's right sometimes god's not going to erase it from you he's not going to erase it because the memory of the father's house calls that boy to say i will arise i will go back to my father i will say i'm no more worthy come on and he listen he had a season of mourning but when he got to the father's house jesus said the time of morning is over you have already traveled morning's row it's not your destination bring me the ring bring me the robe bring me bring me the shoes remember redemption is in the memory is a church in the book of revelation revelation chapter 2 and verse number 4. revelation chapter 2 and verse number 4 jesus says nevertheless i have somewhat against thee because thou has left thy first love remember remember remember therefore from whence thou art fallen and repent and do the first works or else i will come unto thee quickly and remove thy candlestick out of his place except thou repent when he said remember folks we have backslidden if we remember when we used to have prayer meetings we have backslidden when we remember when we used to tarry around the altars we are backslidden when we look and say oh there was a day boy i tell you what there was a day that revivals went from now i remember those days you started you had revival very few i remember i remember when it went from when it went from sunday to sunday and if it went another week the pastor was kind enough to take one night off so the women could wash their hair and wash their clothes and everything else and come right back and those revivals went on for weeks see i don't want to have a day that we look back as a church and say oh i remember when we used to really have a crowd on wednesday night oh i remember when we man we we used to have a choir law filled with people oh there's been a there's been a lot of churches that their choir laws are empty right now what happened i'll tell you what happened somebody has forgotten to mourn oh i mourn over my initial coming to god i mourned over that but can i tell you i still go to the mourner's bench because in me that dwelleth no good thing i've got to go every day to the mourner's bench and say god help off kenny carpenter's attitude god help him god god god help him to remember if we don't watch it we don't watch it we'll forget we'll forget oh i feel the lord tonight remember when you're fallen memory is a blessed thing memory is a blessed thing it was memory in judges 16 28 it was memory that hit a young man that had disgraced his god and had disgraced his parents it was memory that had caused this young man named sampson who now is tied to a bar in a grinding house and he goes in circles every day and grinds meal for the philistines he doesn't have two eyes they were born out they were cut out by the philistines he now finds himself follow me now church some of you that the devil is saying to you you're a laughingstock some of you the enemy is saying to you oh don't even try to get stirred up don't even try to get back to where you once were with god and he's trying to laugh you find samson in the middle of the coliseum and the philistines bring him out to make sport of him that word sport means to make fun of him to ridicule him you know he's a cruel devil i'm going to preach to you there's a good god i got to preach to you he's a cruel devil he is a cruel devil you hear me he is a cruel devil he delights he delights when a man gets intoxicated rex's car and kills a bunch of people out here on the highway hell delights at that can i tell you why anybody wants to even flirt around with hell is a mystery to me you ought to want to get as far away from the enemy as you can he delights in that he delights in the police officer knocking on the door and telling the mother it's got a little child beside your husband's been killed out here on the road he delights in that he's a cruel devil he's a cruel devil don't you ever think don't you ever think you can cool it on god listen there's no neutral ground you're either serving god tonight or you're serving him tonight but i gotta tell you i i got to tell you he's a good god he is he is a good god he'll take your mess he'll take your brokenness he'll take you just as you are now now that is one thing that god and the devil will do they'll both take you as you are but the difference is god will take you to fix you the devil will take you to scatter you sampson is in the in the coliseum and they're laughing at him and little boys around kicking him and kids are coming up and smacking him the bible says in judges 16 28 and samson called unto the lord and said oh lord god remember me remember me what do you mean by that do you remember me god there was a time down there at esterol that i was a young man and i my mom and daddy were godly and they introduced me to you and they told me that i was to be a deliverer and i believed you jehovah and strength came upon me and i i began to have strength that was beyond the natural and and i allowed my flesh to get in the way and i allowed things to get in the way god and and i failed you i don't believe for one moment when samson said remember me he's talking about his failure i believe he's talking about his good time remember me i pray thee and strengthen me i pray thee only this once oh god that i may be at once avenged or the philistines from my two eyes can i tell you that god did remember him that god did remember him the devil wants to tell you that god knows all the bad in your life but what that slew foot won't tell you is god also remembers the good what a good god what a good god he remembers the good remember me oh god and you know what god did remember him and god did give him supernatural strength and the bible said he brought down the whole coliseum he got he leaned against two pillars and took the pillars down and the whole coliseum collapsed and the bible says samson slew more in his death than he did all the time that he was alive do you know that god is able to give you your finest moment after you come out of failure and you're able to say god i remember can i tell your redemption redemption oh you don't know how far i went brother carpenter well you know samson that's pretty far right that's going pretty far but let me take you a little further luke 23 42 luke 23 and verse 42 a man has been crucified he's within minutes of dying and he said unto jesus lord remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom lord remember me you know i memory came memory just flickered in my mind and i may ask him if he if he ever developed this but i remember years ago stephen solomon told me that he was creating a story about these verses he said i'm going to create a young man that served god i'm going to create a young man that served god it was dedicated to the temple brother lawless a young man that was brought up by godly parents it was dedicated in the temple and then he said i'm going to tell how he began to look out the windows of the temple and began to see the world as it danced and how this young man got alert away from the altar and this young man got alert away from the word and he got lured away you know that's you do let me stop for a moment and say something you do know that's why they call it a fishing lure it's not the real thing it's just allure your way the world lures us away and he was telling me solomon was telling me he said i'm going to develop this to where this young man got in trouble stealing he got a habit of drinking wine and then he began to steal to support his habit and he finds himself on the cross but he looks over and he recognizes that he too was 12 years old when another 12 year old boy came to the temple he too remembers this jesus and he says lord remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom and jesus said unto him verily i say unto thee today shalt thou be with me in paradise can i tell you to those of you that are thinking what good you could be what good what good is left in me can i tell you that boy is not going to give one shekel in the offering that boy is not going to teach one rabbi clay he's not going to teach any classes in the temple he just has but a few minutes to live but this good did i tell you he's a good god have i have i told you he's a cruel devil but have i told you he's a good god there's a good god that would look over and say you only got about four or five minutes left but i'm gonna tell you today you'll be with me in paradise today oh there is redemption in oh if somebody just helped me praise him i wish someone tonight that appreciates the grace and the mercy and the love would just just rattle the raptors of this place right now blessed are they that mourn for they shall be what comforted the word comforted just simply means to be drawn to one side that's all it means in the greek the word comforted just means to be drawn to the side and of course in this application it is to be drawn to the side of jesus christ you say brother carpenter i feel so far away from god maybe it's because you still got another block or two on the morning streak to go i just feel like i'm a million miles away from god maybe god is just simply saying hey you've got just a few more miles to go and i promise you if we do this by the word of god there will come a day when all of a sudden your mourning has turned into comfort all of a sudden your grief your anguish your sorrow your torment all of a sudden you just feel the hand pull you over to his side and everything is going to be all right it just means to be pulled to the side how can we be comforted what are ways that we can be comfort comforted what are ways we can be comforted romans 15 4. for whatsoever things were written before time that's the old testament for whatsoever things were written before time were written for our learning the old testament is for our learning that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have what hope but hope that is seen is not hope do you know how i know god loves me not the size of a chill bump on me jesus loves me this i know for the bible i know it's elementary but that's how i know he loves me he doesn't i don't know he loves me because i got an unexpected check in the mail i'm getting more income tax back i feel sorry for people that judge how god loves them based on the economy he loves me you know why this bible tells me so you can wake up with all of hell breathing down your throat reminding you of how nasty you've been how ugly you've been but if you could just reach over and get the bible and begin to read your bible it'll become alive to you jesus loves me that's why you ought to have a bible it's your love story it's your survival kit through patience of scripture how can he comfort me tonight john 14 16. look at this jesus said and i will pray the father and he shall give you another comforter that he may abide with you forever come on i know it's wonderful to talk in tongues but i'm telling you the holy ghost is a comforter i love speaking in tongues but i got the holy ghost even when i'm not speaking in tongues oh hallelujah i said i got the holy ghost even when i'm not speaking in tongues some folks some folks are so shallow they don't believe they have the holy ghost unless they speak in tongues now i'm thankful to god we speak in tongues but i am not going to raise up a church that believes you don't have the holy ghost unless you're speaking in tongues sure tongues is the initial sign that you receive the gift of the holy ghost but after the sign comes the fruit and the fruit is love joy peace gentleness faith temperance thank god i've got the comforter john 14 26 but the comforter which is the holy ghost whom the father will send in my name he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever i have said unto you oh let me just let me just go down a little bit comforted uh by the word of god right comforted by the holy ghost colossians four and seven colossians four and seven paul writes to the church at kalashay writes the first apostolic church of the maryville colossians all right he writes to him and he says this in colossians 4 7 all my state shall touch your guests and i'm sorry when i get to heaven there's gonna be a lot of guys come up say you never pronounce my name right okay declare unto you who is a beloved brother he said i'm sending this man to you who is a beloved brother a faithful minister and fellow servant in the lord colossians 4 8 whom i have sent unto you for the same purpose that he might know your estate and comfort your heart now stay with me now as i close what's the first way we can have comfort the word the word what's the second way we have comfort the baptism of the holy ghost the comforter what's another way we can have a comfort one another we are a body we are a body and being a body god designs us to comfort one another that's why i said if the sun is shining on your life and you know a brother that the sun isn't shining pray for him pray for him your life's going good don't just think that it's just you know god bless us for and no more and it's all i just you know i'm just no no you you you're you you can't do that at least not in god's church because you are connected in a body you don't get to decide who your brother or sister is these these churches that vote on their membership i don't understand that at all if you've been born again i mean you're in the body whether you like what it looks like or she looks like or not you're in the body all these people hey thank god once you give a hand i think five or six people got baptized over the weekend here at first atmosphere isn't that wonderful guess who they are they're our brothers they're our sisters they're our family church we're having babies around here god's given us babies around here we're having babies around here isn't it great there are babies around here you know we're in a part of a body and in a part of the body part of the body is to comfort he said i have sent this man to you he's going to comfort your hearts thessalonians 3 and 2. listen first thessalonians 3 and 2. watch paul again he said and sent to motheus our brother and minister of god and fellow labor in the gospel of christ to establish you and just what we got comfort you comfort you to comfort you oh the lord is coming back for the lord himself shall descend from heaven with the voice of the archangel shout and the dead in christ shall rise first i'm reading from first thessalonians and the dead in christ shall rise first then when we which are alive and remain shall not prevent them which are asleep for they shall rise first and after that we're going to rise and meet them in the clouds to be to ever be with the lord how many's ever heard that before huh that's a wonderful thing isn't it because it's really going to happen all of life isn't about 70 years of light living there's a world beyond this world i said there's a world beyond this world oh yes there is the bible says that if we have hope only in this life we are of all men most miserable that's why the world's mentality is eat and drink and be merry because you're only here for so long but the church says this is just a dressing room of getting ready for eternity i've got trials i've got torments i've got things happening in my life but paul says the lord shall descend from heaven with a shout and the voice of the archangel and the dead in christ shall rise first and we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to be with the lord ah see brother william jeter here tonight his father what a blessed saint of god what a blessed man of god his father passed away last night but here he is tonight in the house of god is he sad sure he's sad but the bible says that we're not to sorrow as those that have no hope we're not to come and have sorrow sure he's sad but he's not sad without hope because one day and it could be before we even have his father's funeral one day that trumpet is going to sound and the dead in christ shall rise first now i said all that to tell you this i didn't read you the last verse first thessalonians 4 18 for the lord himself shall descend from the heaven which shout the voice of the archangel the dead and christ shall rise first then we reach we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together in the clouds look at the last verse that he says wherefore what's wherefore mean it means consider what have you said wherefore comfort one another with these words can i tell you tonight that if life is turned upside down the greatest comfort you could ever have is me not telling you your house is going to be rebuilt and your job is coming back and your maid is coming back and your kids but the greatest thing i could tell you is hold on to god because he's coming back he's coming back he's going to come back he's going to come back oh don't let it don't let it just don't let this be a message and just oh that's old foggy stuff oh i wish you would be more relevant you can't be more relevant than this tonight come on praise him with me for a few moments come on praise him with me you can't be more relevant than this tonight staying with me tonight you cannot be more relevant than what i've just preached to you tonight if this doesn't float your boat your boat's got a hole in it if this don't light your fire your wood is wet that's just plain well i wish you would tell us something more relevant you know tell me when the knitting class is going to resume here at the church tell me are we ever going to have a class around here to teach single women how to change the oil in the car and oh yeah is that what church is about maybe you're the guy that walks in and says at least i got here for the good part no if this doesn't turn something in you if you don't hear and this this ought to be frightening to you this ought to frighten you when i got the word that older jeter had died oh god oh god touch that family when i got the word randy newcomer's brother had died oh god touch that family when brother cheshon texts me early sunday morning he's the precious pastor from crossfield that comes and visits with us many times on sunday night when he just texts me sunday morning early and said brother carpenter would you pray for my family our youngest daughter's husband died last night oh god you see if hearing about someone else's misfortune doesn't stab you i i don't think you're in the body i don't think you're in the body if someone's misfortune here in the church it doesn't hit you when you see someone going the wrong direction god god god has designed us to comfort one another and do you know what may cause someone who's determined in their mind this would be the last service to determine in their mind they're never leaving this place is not wrapped up in my sermon but it's in you comforting them when you know somebody's hurting don't wait to stand in line to talk to me or one of the pastoral teams tell us something's happening you go to them you lay your hands on them you pray for them because the foot can't say to the head because i'm not the eye i'm not of the body we're all a body i wonder tonight just a minute if we just couldn't again i i'm i'm on this could we just pray for one another just man to man woman to woman just lay your hand over on somebody right now pray for him lift up your voice church you're the preacher right now you're the preacher right now you're the preacher right now mom maybe it's just laying your hand over on your daughter right now that we don't tell each other we love each other enough we don't we get cold and accustomed to seeing each other we know oh yes
