Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
The sign that follows believers
- The teacher takes up his Bible class on tongues again: tongues play an important role in our relationship with God, and the church must be taught the proper interpretation of God's word in this area.
- Tongues is not the Spirit; it is the sign of the Spirit.
- Jesus declared that signs shall follow them that believe — believers do not follow after signs, but signs follow the believer — and one of those signs is speaking with new tongues.
- God's word will have the last say: in the teacher's story, a man humiliated by a gang in a cafe walked out without a word — and ran over 12 motorcycles on his way out. Delayed, but the word had the last word.
Pentecost: as the Spirit gave utterance
- Acts 2:1-4 is read: the sound of a rushing mighty wind, cloven tongues like as of fire, and all filled with the Holy Ghost, speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
- It is incorrect that the 120 were enabled to speak foreign languages to preach the gospel: the crowd does not ask 'what shall we do' until Acts 2:37.
- What happened at Acts 2:14 was different: Peter stood up with the eleven and lifted up his voice — no longer speaking in tongues, he preached the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and then the question came.
Scriptures: Acts 2:1-4; Acts 2:37; Acts 2:14
Cornelius: the Gentiles receive the same gift
- Peter had to be given a vision before he would go preach to Cornelius, a Gentile, and his household — this is where the Gentiles, and we, came into the church.
- While Peter yet spake, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word; the Jews who came with Peter were astonished because they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.
- Peter did not suggest or hint at baptism; he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.
Scriptures: Acts 10:44; Acts 10:47-48
Peter's defense: what was I that I could withstand God?
- Before the council at Jerusalem, Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning and expounded it by order: the vessel like a great sheet, the three men who had come for him, and Cornelius's angel promising words whereby he and his house should be saved.
- 'As I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning' — and Peter remembered the word of the Lord: John baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
- The council held their peace and glorified God: God has also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
- The baptism of the Holy Ghost is not an added charm on the bracelet of religion; the Holy Ghost is about receiving the word of God.
Scriptures: Acts 11:1-18

I'm I'm just not completely finished it's so important that the church be taught the proper interpretation of God's word in the area of of tongues um tongues play such a important role in our relationship with God um tongues play such an important role now you understand that tongues is not the spirit It's The Sign of the spirit and um so but it's important that we that we know the the biblical definition of tongues so I'm going to take this Bible class again I have for a few weeks speaking about tongues 14 says afterward he appeared unto the 11 as they set at meat and upgraded them with their unbelief and Hardness of Heart because they believ not them which had seen him after he was risen and he said unto them go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to Every Creature he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved but he that believeth not shall be damned and these signs shall follow them but that believe in my name they shall cast out devils they shall speak with new tongues this word will have the last say it will have the last say the story is told of a man who stopped at a little cafe on the side of the road and was in there eating lunch traveling through when a gang of motorcycle riders came in they were tough they were rough their very presence when they walked in the room wanted everybody in that room to know we are in control so the leader of the pack went over to the man who had stopped there to have a burger and a drink and the leader of the group walked up and took the man's hamburger and threw it in the floor then he reached and got the man's water and poured it over his head the man looked around for a moment wiped the water off the top of his head got up and walked out of the restaurant the leader of the group sat down and said to the waitress that came up to him said he ain't much of a man is he she said you know what he ain't much of a driver either he just ran over 12 motorcycles when he left delayed but you got it today make a note I can tell that again I'm G to tell you something God's word will have the last say regardless of how humiliated you think you become in life I got great news to share with you today God's word will have the last word it will have the last word since we will meet this word in judgment it is very careful it's very needful that we study this word and the Bible says in in reference to tongues Jesus Christ himself declared and these signs shall follow them that believe these indicators these signs shall follow them that believe please notice that believers do not follow after signs but signs do definitely follow the believer One of these signs Jesus Jesus said would be that they would speak in new tongues or languages we understand that as you turn to the Great Book of Acts chapter 2 and verse number one we understand today that this happened when the Holy Ghost came on the day of Pentecost chapter 2 and verse one and when the day of Pentecost was fully come the they were all with one Accord in one place and suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing Mighty Wind and he filled all the house where they were sitting and there appeared unto them clo tongues like as a fire and is set upon each of them and here it is here's what Jesus said and here's what Jesus meant and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance or simply put as the spirit gave them the ability to speak now I have heard of I've never been a part of but I have heard of some of the most farfetched things being done in order for people to speak in tongues I have heard of taking I've heard of churches taking people back and writing certain things on a piece of paper like like uh just different uh La uh law uh different sounds and say just say these and the Holy Ghost will get in this Bible says as the spirit gave them but I've also heard some outlandish definitions or reasoning of what happened here on the day of Pentecost one being that God enabled 120 to speak foreign languages to preach the gospel that is simply incorrect as you read the whole second chapter you find that they do not ask men and Brethren what shall we do until they come to acts 237 that's when they ask what shall we do if they had preached the gospel in tongues that question would have been asked in Acts 2:14 but what happened in Acts 2:14 was Peter got up and started preaching the gospel and as a matter of fact there was a transition and Luke The Physician even makes note of it in Acts 21:4 if you would give me that Luke even makes the the the the not in Scripture that Peter had went from speaking in tongues as the spirit gave utterance to using his own voice for it says in Acts 2:14 Peter standing up with the 11 lifted up his voice in other words Luke makes the note he's no longer speaking in tongues he is no longer under the power of the spirit he now lifts up his voice and from that from 14 all the way to 37 he preaches the only saving message on Earth and that is the death the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ he is the truth the light the way and Peter preached that and they asked what must we do some years later went by of course that's farfetch to say that they used tongues God used gave them the ability to speak languages to preach the gospel that is so far-fetched and several years went by and in Acts chapter 10 is an interesting event that took place it's the Gentiles coming into the church this is where you and I came into the church the New Testament Church that's where you and I were given the opportunity we know that Peter had to receive a vision from God Peter had to be given a vision from God God to go preach to cornelus a gentile in his household a gentile God had to tell Peter that what he had cleansed he was no longer to call common or no longer to call unclean we know that acts 10 records that Peter went down to the house of cornelus and into the house of Cornus and there found gathered together many of cornelius's family to hear the word of God we know that in Acts 10:4 before that while Peter yet spake these words the Holy Ghost fail on all them which heard the word they of the circumcision everybody say that's Jews they of the circumcision which CA which believed were astonished they were amazed they were perplexed they they were absolutely astonished as many as came with Peter what caused these Jew Jews to be astonished what caused them to be perplexed what caused them their mouths to gape open what caused them the Bible said because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost for they heard them speak with tongu and magnify God then answered Peter can any man forbid water that they should not be baptized wait a minute to those that want to stretch the scripture and say that Pentecost was only a one-time thing God only gave this ability one time doesn't hold up under scripture which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we no difference in their baptism no difference there Peter turned and he he said could anybody have any reason why we shouldn't offer water baptism to these Gentiles what do you base that on Peter because they have received the Holy Ghost as well as we verse 48 to those that may need a little push about baptism if Peter was here today he would not suggest you get baptized he would not hint that you be baptized he would command that you be baptized now he didn't turn around and say boys when the creek Rises he didn't turn around and said when you get enough that it's worth getting the T out of the closet he didn't get around and say when it's a special day and everybody's there he turned around and immediately gave them a command what a what about a command you know I can ask brother Ericson to bring me my water I can say brother Ericson your father-in-law is a little thirsty this morning would you be so kind don't do it yet would you be so kind as to bring me as to bring me uh the water or I could just say bring me that water now right now seriously I love you buddy you see what I'm saying Peter didn't suggest he commanded them to be baptized he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord then prayed they him to te certain days but this didn't set well with the Jews at home this didn't set well with the with the Jews in in Jerusalem because that's one of the reasons we have chapter 11 and it says in chapter 11 verse1 and the apostles and Brethren that were in jeda heard that the Gentiles also received the word of God now that's an interesting way to note that isn't it you see the Holy Ghost is not just about some experience of tongues the Holy Ghost is about receiving the word of God and when Peter was come up to Jerusalem they that were of the circumcision contended with him the Jews were angry upset and argued with him contended with him saying thou Wiest into men uncircumcised and D eat with them but Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning and expounded it by order unto them saying I was in the city of japa praying and in a trance I saw a vision certain vessel descended as it had been a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners and it came even to me upon the which when I had fastened my eyes I considered and saw four-footed beast of the the Earth and wild beasts and creeping things and fouls of the air I Heard a Voice saying unto me arise Peter slay and eat now see what Peter saw was animals up to this point that he had been told not to eat but I said not so Lord For Nothing common or unclean ha at any time entered into my mouth but the voice answered me again from Heaven what God hath cleansed that call thou not common this was done three times and and all were drawn up again into heaven and behold immediately there were there three men already come unto the house where I was sent from cesaria unto me and the spirit bade me go with them doubting nothing moreover these six Brethren accompanied me and we entered into the man's house and he showed us how he had seen an angel in his house which stood and said unto him send men to japa and call for Simon whose surname is Peter now this next verse is going to tell you that the Holy Ghost is not another little charm that you hang on the bracelet of religion that you got added to it the baptism of the Holy Ghost is not some added thing that you can say you know I'm a born again Christian can I tell you according to scripture all Christians are born again all Christians according to scripture are born again it's only when we want to divide experiences and say you know well I you know I was saved but then I got this or I I accepted Christ and then I got this according to scripture that does not come into play because they got the Holy Ghost in chapter uh 10 and now we're in chapter 11 13 Peter is rehearsing this and Peter is telling them what happened and he says this is what Cornelius said he showed us verse 13 how he had seen an angel in his house which stood and said unto him send me into japa and call for Simon whose Sur name is Peter who shall tell thee words whereby thou and all thy house shall be shall Beed what's Peter going to come and tell them words that they can be saved Common Sense tells you they were not saved Before Peter got there if they were saved Before Peter got there there's no need for Peter to come whereas they words whereby they shall be saved and as I began to speak now please notice the time here the time here is several years later and as I from from Pentecost and as I begin to speak the Holy Ghost fell on them as on us at the beginning he said when I began to preach the Holy Ghost fell on those people just like it fell on us at the beginning then remembered I the word of the Lord how that he said John indeed baptized with water but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost that's when Peter turned and commanded them to be baptized in Jesus name for as much then as God gave them the light gift as he did unto us who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ what was I that I could withstand God now please notice something with me and I want I want this verse to stay there for a moment these signs shall follow them that believe as you believe there will be signs that will follow you just like Peter says in verse 17 for as much then as God gave them the light gift as he did unto us who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ Cornelius heard and I didn't take time to read it but when Peter went to cornelius's house he preached the only message you can hear to be saved he preached the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ Cornelius believed it he believed it when he heard Peter preach preach that Jesus came to this earth that Jesus hung on a cross suffered blood and died for our sins and Rose the third day Cornelius believed it and when he believed it and we can go into a lot of speculation here and and one of them being if Peter was in doubt whether to allow them to be baptized I wonder if he would have even offered Spirit baptism I wonder if he' even got to the place to where he said you can receive the spirit so the spirit took over as my belief the spirit took over in that room and fell on them that believed and they begin to speak in tongues that's what astonished Peter to the point that he looked around and said you know what if God gave them the spirit what am I that I could withhold water baptism from them come on into the name of Jesus come on into the remission of sins come on in to eternal life somebody ought to praise him for the truth today because God's word will have what was I that I could withstand God this is what I really like Verse 18 when they heard these things now Peter said Hey How You Gonna fuss with that now please remember Peter is before a council of men he's being examined before a council of men and he says hey guys this is what happened happened this is what happened Holy Ghost fell on them who was I that tell them they couldn't be baptized and he said who was I to withstand God that's verse 17 verse 18 when they that's the counsel when they heard these things they held their peace and glorified God saying then hath God also given to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life you know what they said they said hey they're in the Gentiles are in they received the spirit they've received the water they believe hey we better be thankful I'm glad for what happened in Acts 10
