Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The promise is unto you

  • The promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
  • Over two thousand years later God is still calling, and people are still receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

Scriptures: Acts 2:39

Wait for the promise

  • Jesus commanded the disciples not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father: John truly baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
  • When the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place; a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind filled the house, cloven tongues like as of fire sat upon each of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Scriptures: Acts 1:4-5; Acts 2:1-4

A church the Bible characters would recognize

  • The aim is a church pastored so close to the Bible that Moses — who wrote, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one — and the apostle Peter would be in harmony with what is preached from its pulpit.

Scriptures: Deuteronomy 6:4

Why Peter and Paul answered differently

  • The Philippian jailer knew nothing of Christ, so Paul started at the elementary place — believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved — and still took him and his household and baptized them the same hour of the night.
  • The crowd at Pentecost already believed on the Jesus they had crucified; when they asked, Men and brethren, what shall we do, Peter took them on to repentance, baptism in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Scriptures: Acts 2:37; Acts 2:38; Acts 16:31

The signs were an inauguration

  • When God ushered in the dispensation of the law, Mount Sinai burned and smoked and quaked and the trumpet waxed louder and louder — but the emphasis was the commandments God gave, not the smoke and trembling.
  • So at Pentecost, the rushing mighty wind and tongues of fire announced God's presence and the new age of grace; they were the inauguration of the church, not the thing emphasized.

Scriptures: Exodus 19:16-20; Exodus 20

Not for the twelve only, and not for that day only

  • Peter preached: repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • Acts 2:39 refuses the claim that the promise was just for the twelve, or just for the day of Pentecost.

Scriptures: Acts 2:38; Acts 2:39

Cornelius: what God hath cleansed

  • Cornelius, a devout Gentile centurion who feared God, gave much alms, and prayed always, saw an angel who told him his prayers and alms had come up for a memorial and directed him to send to Joppa for Simon Peter.
  • God then had to work on Peter: the vessel like a great sheet, the voice saying, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat, and, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common — because Christ died not for the Jew only, but for whosoever will.

Scriptures: Acts 10:1-17

that's 239 says that the promise is unto you and to your children and to those that are far off and then it says in this way as many as the Lord our God shall call I've got great news tonight it's been over two thousand years and he God is still calling it's been over two thousand years and he's still calling people and people are getting the papped ISM of the holy cow me Thank You Lola you may be seated we begin Jesus has resurrected from the dead Jesus had been with the disciples for many days now and Acts chapter 1 and verse number 4 states a timeline just before his ascension back into heaven and being a symbol together with them that was the disciples commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father which saith he ye have heard of me for John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence or not many days from now Jesus told the disciples that they were not to leave Jerusalem they were not to carry out the commission of going into all the world and preaching the gospel to every creature until they had received the promise of the Father we later in the next verse find that the promise of the father that Jesus referred to was the baptism the baptism of the Holy Ghost we understand that the disciples obeyed the voice of Jesus they gathered together some 120 in an upper room and there they waited and they praised and they prayed until that pentecost morning came and in Acts chapter 2 and verse number 1 and when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all with one Accord in one place one Accord is one frame of mind everybody had one frame of mind suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire and it's set upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance or as the Spirit gave them the ability to do so it was the spirit that caused them to speak in another tongue the spirit gave them the utterance of stop for a few moments because I wonder if this has not been asked by some of you maybe you didn't even want to raise your hand some would say if we receive the Holy Ghost just like they did in the book of Acts then brother carpenter where is the sound of a rushing mighty wind but the carpenter if we receive the Holy Ghost just like just like they get in the book of Acts where is the visible tongues of fire that set upon each of them why are these signs never again accompany even in the book of Acts nowhere else in the Bible is the sound heard does Luke record not in acts 8 not in acts 10 not in acts 19 nowhere and of course we understand how important the book of Acts is because the book of Acts is an abbreviation then the full title for Acts is the actions of the Apostles the verbatim pre exactly what they preach is recorded in the book of the actions of the Apostles as a pastor tonight good church I want to Pastor this church so close to the Bible as close as I possibly can that if any fybel character was resurrected and walked through that door he would be at harmony with what he heard preached from the pulpit I would I would pray tonight that if King David attended one of our Sunday night services and saw people leave me spinning dancing shouting running and joyous about God that King David would say I'm in the right place I'm at the right place here I would deny that if Moses came through that door and I said we believe I would hope tonight with Moses he recorded Moses wrote down Deuteronomy 6:4 hear o Israel the Lord our God is one I would tonight that if Moses had walked through that door and heard the praise singers singing we believe there's only one God we believe there's only one Lord we believe there's only one thing I would want Moses to say that salute church I'm talking about that's what I'm talking about tonight I would want the Bible Carrie I I asked I asked a gentleman one time we were we were discussing doctrine and I asked him I said now I'm setting you up and I think that's only fair sometimes when you're going to set somebody up y'all tell him you're gonna set him up and I said I'm setting you up now I said if Peter was resurrected from the dead could he hold your church a revival and talk about the Apostle Peter now and he thought for a moment he reluctantly said yeah he could he can do that he could Peter the Apostle Peter could preach in our church I said wouldn't you have a problem if someone from the congregation hollered out and said I'm lost what must I do to be saved he said absolutely not he said I wouldn't have said you mean you wouldn't have a probable Peter saying repent when I started down next to 38 he knew that I have set him up but remember I promised he I told him that I was setting him up you see that part of he said well no I would want Peter to say what Paul said believe Ballack on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be safe you see again church family God is not the author of confusion he's not the author of confusion now why in the world is let me stop here on this point since I brought it up why did Paul the Apostle Paul tell the Philippian jailer when the Philippian jailer said sir what must I do to be saved why did Paul say to the Philippian jailer believe thou upon the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved why did Peter tell the people on the day of Pentecost when they said men and brethren what shall we do to be saved why did the Apostle Peter say repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy why did Paul say one thing in Peter say another it was because of the audience they were witnessing to the Philippian jailer knows nothing about Jesus Christ all the Philippian jailer knows he's had to preachers locked up they got to pray and praising an earthquake in the jailhouse everybody stops and bonds fell off everybody's prison doors fell open and he was under the rule of Rome that said if one soldier as if one prisoner excuse me escapes you will lose your life it is a matter of fact Paul had to tell the Philippian jailer not to fall on his sword because he was going to go ahead and end his life and Paul had to say sir do yourself no harm we are all here the jailer asked for a light he came in and felt before Paul and Silas and said men and brethren what must I do to be saved he had to start at the elementary part he had to start at the very beginning he to start with the Savior you've got to believe you've got that adhere to you've got to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ you've got to believe on him with all your heart now we know that Paul later spoke about baptism because the Bible said that Paul took the jailer and his household that same hour of the night and baptized them why did Peter say repent and be baptized every one of you because he had already preached the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ why didn't Peter say to them believe now help on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved because they were already believing upon the Lord Jesus Christ that's why acts 2:37 says men and brethren what shall we do he had already told them that they had taken the Messiah the Christ and that they had with wicked hands had slain and crucified and then Peter he they they already believed if they did not believe upon Jesus Christ they would not have asked the question men and brethren what shall we do but when they asked what they should do about how they believed Peter took them to repentance baptism and the promise of the Holy Ghost Paul started at that Paul started at believing because that was the place of that man's faith can you say men I'm glad that if the Apostle Peter was here last Sunday when we baptized for souls in the name of Jesus Christ that Peter would have said that's exactly right you've got to baptize in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins so I'm gonna be I'm gonna be exactly biblical why is there not the sound why is there not the appearance of cloven tongues setting upon them simply because it was the inaugural address it was the changing from law to grace was inauguration he was a special sequence of events that were marking the beginning of an institution he was an inauguration God was giving the inauguration of the church and so he allowed the wind to sell as a mighty rushing wind and tongues of fire and it was it was just simply say this is it this is I this is the inauguration this is what I am assuring this is what I am assuring in but you see it's much like Exodus chapter 19 in Exodus chapter 19 when God was going to usher in the dispensation of the law when God was going to begin to lead man by a law the Bible says in Exodus 19 and verse 16 and he came to pass on the third day in the morning there were thundering thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the mound and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud so that all the people that was in the mount trembled Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God they stood at the neither part of the mountain and now Sinai was altogether on a smoke because the Lord descended upon it in a fire and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace and the whole mount rightly and the voice and when the voice of the trumpet sounded long and waxed louder and louder Moses spake and got answered him by voice and the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai on the top of the mount and the Lord called unto Moses up to the top of the Mount and Moses went up now God is huh stirring in a new day it's the law of dispensation so again there is an inauguration God comes down and if the whole mountain is burning with fire and the whole mountain is smoking and the mountain is shaking why because there's a dispensational it's an inauguration of a new day that's coming but you know what it wasn't about the smoke and it wasn't about the quake it wasn't about all the things shaking it was about God saying to Moses thou shalt have no other gods before me thou shalt not make to the any graven images thou shalt not bow down to any other thou shalt not bear false witness thou shalt honor thy father and thy mother thou shalt not kill thou shalt not covet and on and on God gave the law and from Exodus 19 and 20 all the way until the cross the law was preached and people obeyed it no smoke no trembling no mountain shaking that was the inauguration but that was not what God wanted to emphasize he wanted to emphasize the commandments and so the sound of wind and the appearance of pokken tongues is not what God is emphasizing he is emphasizing a new day that he is going to feel the hearts of the believers with his spirit I'm glad that I have God's Spirit in my life tonight I'm glad that I know that God's Spirit is on the inside of my heart God used to smoke the fire to announce his presence and the new dispensation again God used these signs to announce his presence and the new age of grace there was tongues of fire there was there there was the sound of a rushing mighty wind but that's just announcing just announcing his presence and then Peter began to preach in acts 2:38 then Peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost for the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off even as many as the Lord our God shall call so we can look at all of these man explanations for why they spoke in tongues in the book of Acts and we could say it's just for the 12 but Acts 239 refused that it was just for the 12 acts 239 refused that it was just for the day of Pentecost that's 239 stairs that the promise is unto you and to your children and to those that are far off and then it says it this way as many as the Lord our God shall call I've got great news tonight it's been over 2,000 years and he God is still calling it's been over 2,000 years and he's still calling people and people are getting the papped ISM of the Holy Ghost please mark with me please mark with me tonight in your Bibles the promise of the Holy Ghost you shall receive the gift the gift every one every one say the gift ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost turn with me now to Acts chapter 10 in verse number one Acts chapter 10 verse number one there was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius a Centurion of the band called the Italian man let me tell you he is that he is not a Jewish man he is the Gentile and he is in the military and he is a godly man he has evidently become a proselyte to Judaism he believes the the the Old Testament and there he stands he is a devout man verse 2 that means godly one that feared God with all of his house which gave much arms to the people and prayed to God always he saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel coming to him coming in to him courteous and when he looked on him he was afraid and said what is it Lord and he said unto Him thy prayers and then arms or come up for a memorial before God and I'm tell you sometimes it's so difficult just to read because you want to stop and you want to say things about every verse but I'm telling you right now praying is not in vain and giving is not in vain when you have forgotten about the prayers you pray God still remembers the prayers you pray and when you forgot about the money that you give to the work of God I Got News for you God has a mighty fine record book and God knows all that we've done for his work amen and now verse three five and now send men to Joppa called for one Simon and surname is Peter he tells corny as the angel tells Cornelius he needs to send down to Joppa there's a man called Simon Peter the Apostle Peter he large with one Simon a Tanner whose house is by the seaside he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do and when the angel which spake him to Cornelius was departed he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually and when he had declared all the things unto them he sent them to Joppa so Cornelius this goes ahead he says there's a man down there by the name of Simon Peter and said he's got words that I ought to do it's pretty important because God sent an angel to tell me this has got to be important message these are things that I ought to do so the angels of the men head off in the direction to get the Apostle Peter but we have a small problem here at this time Peter believes that the gospel is only for the Jews Peter believes that you're not a Jew that you you're a dog you're you don't fellowship with them and you don't eat with them it's a matter of fact Peter had been brought up to believe that Gentiles were simply unclean and you had nothing to do with them so verse 9 on the morrow as they went on their journey they drew nigh into the city Peter went up to the housetop to pray about the sixth hour and he became very hungry and would have but while they made ready he fell into a trance and saw and saw heaven open a certain vessel descending unto Him as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners and laid down two and let down to the earth wherein were all manner of four-footed beasts of the earth while beasts creeping things fowl of the air and there came a voice to him rise Peter kill and eat but Peter said not so Lord for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean the voice spake in him the second time saying what God had cleansed that they'll call not coming this was done thrice and the vessel was received up again into heaven now while Peter doubted himself what this vision which he had seen should mean he had beheld the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house and stood at the gate and I'm gonna skip through here a little bit but but I want you to see what's happening God has told Cornelius you got to go get ahold of Simon Peter he's gonna tell me tell you what you ought to do but now God's got to get to working on Peter because Peter thinks there are certain animals you don't eat and then Peter thinks that there are certain people that that their dogs and Gentiles were those people and so the word of the Lord was telling don't you call what I have cleansed common or unclean and when Jesus Christ died at Calvary he didn't die for the Jew only he died for whosoever will God clean his blood can cleanse every group of man known today or even unknown God died for all flesh and that means you and I
