Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Adversity is the catalyst for creativity
- Six dead climbers birthed the rubber-soled boot; a golfer's death by lost cabin pressure birthed the pressure monitor; wrecks birthed the airbag, and Garrett Morgan gave the world a fireman's hood and the caution light.
- Every one of these was birthed because somebody met his own crisis and focused not on what it was doing but on how to be ready for the future.
The altar Abraham built
- The Lord appeared to Abram and promised the land to his seed, and there he builded an altar unto the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord.
- An altar is personal — Abraham had no collective body to worship with, only his God and his altar; if you cannot walk with God alone, you cannot walk with God with anyone else.
- We do not build an altar for the moment but for a lifetime; we do not come to church because something has happened but so that we are ready when things happen.
Scriptures: Genesis 12:7-8
Famine tests the size of the altar
- After the altar was built, a grievous famine came — no rain, hot east winds, locusts and caterpillars devouring — and famines reveal what kind of altar we have.
- Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn, but Egypt never gives anything God can use to produce a promise; leaving the altar, he became self-centered and asked his wife to change her identity and say she was his sister.
- To be part of the world you have to change what you say about your relationship with Jesus; we need to be one with the church, not merely kin to it.
Scriptures: Genesis 12:10; Genesis 12:11-13
Self-centeredness, the root of the first sin
- Lucifer fell by the repeated I will — I will ascend, I will exalt my throne, I will be like the Most High; self-will is what leaving the altar produces.
- With God incarnate standing in their midst, a man could think only of his share of an inheritance; Jesus answered with the rich fool, who pulled down his barns and heard, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee.
- A true sign of self-centeredness is always finding fault in others; there is enough to work on in our own house without importing someone else's.
Scriptures: Isaiah 14:12-14; Luke 12:13-21
Back to the place of the altar
- Pharaoh's sheep, goats, gold and silver could not produce the promise; when God plagued Pharaoh's house, Abram was put out of Egypt with his wife and all he had.
- Abram journeyed back to Bethel, unto the place of the altar which he had made there at the first, and there he called on the name of the Lord.
- It was not the will of God that anyone left — they left the altar and went down to Egypt; the call of this morning is to come back to the altar and come home.
Scriptures: Genesis 13:1-4

is so good to be back worshiping the Lord I said last night the staff meeting it feels so good to say you may be seated and there's actually people out there to be seated the saying goes necessity is the mother of all invention but as history has often showed adversity is often the catalyst for creativity inspiring inventors to life-saving feats of ingenuity adversity has been the catalyst for creativity a lot of thinking out of the box has had to take place the last 45 days a lot of thinking out of the box said ah it wasn't I tagging man who's credited with creating the first rubber soled boot it's an eye tagging man he's created his credited with being the inventor inventor of the rubber sole cleated boot this came to his mind after six climbing friends perished in a snowstorm in Italy in 1935 he concluded that the climbers hobnail boots and what a hobnail boot is boots with a hard sole on them that nails are riveted around to keep the soul connected to the upper part of the boot he concluded that the climbers hobnail boots were in part to blame and said about trying to improve the grip and flexion of the soul in 1936 he designed the first rubber sole and the following year with the help of a tire manufacturer launched the first rubber sole boot to be sold a historic peak in this story was reached in July of 1954 when an Italian expedition became the first to reach the summit of the world's second highest mountain in Pakistan today the company manufactures 40 million pairs of rubber sole boots annually supplying shoe manufacturers around the world Meryl Timberland Hugo Boss and I hope I'm saying this last name Prada all right if I'm saying that line of she's right young folks are grinning and that's an indication I probably didn't say it right all right nasa engineer jen psycho was inspired to invent a compact cabin pressure monitor following the tragic death of golfer Payne Stewart in October of 1999 Payne Stewart the WS Open champion was traveling on a Learjet from Orlando Florida to Dallas Texas when the cabin pressure gradually started to fail which resulted in a gradual loss of oxygen which incapacitated and then killed all they were on board the plane was in out of autopilot he simply ran down a few ran out of fuel and crashed they were slowly starved of oxygen and the entire crew I believe other than Payne Stewart there were five others on board these men simply fell asleep the plane was told as they followed the f16 follow the plane that he would go to heights of almost 45 or 48 thousand feet and then it would come back down and eventually crash the personal the personal cabin pressure altitude monitor and warning system is a handheld device that uses sounds vibrations and visual warnings to alert users to the possible loss of oxygen causing the condition before it's too late a US engineer ended up in a ditch after swerving to evade a rock in the road his daughter only avoided hitting the dash because of their fathers and mothers outstretched arms the experience prompted Hendrick to create a patent and a safety cushion device which inflated when a car comes to an abrupt halt although the idea failed to attract the interest of the automobile industry at that time his work paved the way for future models airbags came into widespread use in cars throughout the end of 1980 it was the inventor Garrett Morgan that gave the world to life-saving devices a safety hood fireman could fight inside of a building with flames while having two tubes one that brought fresh air in and the other the exit that was in 1916 Morgan also later on was at an intersection when at that time brother lay at that time a traffic light had two lights on it go and stop at that time and he saw a horrible fatal accident and from that he walked away and Morgan created a light with a third warning sign we know it today is a caution light General Electric brought both the patent from Morgan for $40,000 six dead climbers a dead US Open Golf champ airbags a caution light a hood that help you fight in the middle of fire all of these were birthed all of these were birthed because somebody had the equivalent of a Cogan 19 in their life and instead of focusing on what COBIT 19 was doing they focused on the future of how can we avoid this in the future I stood before you here on March the 15th that's hard to believe I stood right here on March 15 and I preached a message after the fear comes we preached about Josif at and held it after the fear came he said himself to seek the Lord and now this morning on May the 3rd I stand before you with a message and the title of my message today if you would stand with me the title of my message before I read the scripture code mid-nineteen has given us a tremendous opportunity I do not make light of any deaths I do not make light of any any hardships but covet 19 is given you and I an opportunity I want to preach for a few moments God has got ahold of my heart I don't believe I'll ever ever ever be the same I want to preach for a few moments on the great reset button the great reset button covin 19 has given all of us an opportunity to reset our lives to reset Genesis chapter 12 and verse number 7 and the Lord appeared unto Abram and said unto thy seed will I give this land and there everybody saying there and there builded he an altar unto the Lord who appeared in to him and he removed from fence and to a mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent having Bethel on the west and hey aya on the east and there he builded an altar unto the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord the great reset button the great reset button God what you've done in my spirit the last 45 days or so you've showed me things yard that I had put a lot of importance on but you had brought me back to my necessity and Oh God that is you God there was a lot of things I thought I had to have there was a lot of things Lord I thought had to be in place Oh God you have showed me that all we need is you God the nights that I could not sleep when I was fretting over the future of this church I was fretting over things that were possible God as I slipped away in prayer and was kissed by your presence you put me to sleep Oh God many of the nights by simply not giving me an answer but giving me your presence there in that room you ought to help us all help us in Jesus name Amen you may be seated Abraham is called to go out God begins to appear to him shortly after Abraham builds an altar he builds an altar and altars made for worship an altar is made for the individual I thank God that we are a church collectively as a body but I'm more aware of my personal need of God today as never before Abraham didn't have a collective body to worship with was just Abraham his God and his altar we must have an altar that's just our altar we must have a relationship with God that is not tied to my brother or my sister if you cannot walk with God alone you cannot walk with God with anyone else evening I have Co vat19 it's caused me to reach up and sit reset a button that God all I need is you all I need is you he built an altar Abraham did and he called on the name of the Lord what a sight it must have been a few refs stacked up on top of each other and a man gazing up into the heavens taking his voice and crying out to God but that was Abraham's way of worship but the Bible says that after the altar was built in verse number nine that the famine can you please understand something I don't know if well I'm gonna tell you what Kovac 19 has taught me one day at a time just one day at a time they say that we may go through this again in the fall and who knows we may go through this again in the fall and if we do let us go through it stronger let us be prepared let us be like the man that saw six dead mountain climbers and say it says the next time I'll prepare for this because the truth of the matter is those that were weak in this church precoded 19 are weaker today and those that were strong in this church pre Kovach 19 are stronger today we're stronger today Oh give him a hand of praise right now Jesus Christ is soon to blow the trumpet sounding for the rapture but just prior to the rapture the bride will feel the winds of tribulation we can't let the winds of tribulation cause us to lose out being the Bride of Christ Abraham builds an altar but you don't necessarily build an altar for today you build an altar for tomorrow you know necessarily come to church for the moment you come to church for the light you come to church for the unexpected who would have ever dared dreamed that 2020 that there would be over a month and a half we would not assembly together I heard somebody off brother Erickson her brother him and say that he heard a preacher said in the morning he's going to church and casting out all them false prophets that said 20/20 was going to be their year all right who would have ever thought but we don't build an altar for the moment we build an altar for a lifetime we don't just come to church because we're in trouble we come to church to stay out of trouble we don't come to church because something has happened we come to church because things can't happen and I want to be ready when things do happen oh you don't know how sweet that is to have a response today oh lord have mercy oh thank you Jesus oh mighty God of y'all thank you I talked to one pastor I said I told one pastor friend of mine I said man it's the hardest thing you got the anointing and I said there's his pew's it look at you you know I had a Pew yet run the aisles they had a Pew yet he built an altar he's an amazing that in verse 10 after the altar was built and there was a famine in the land and Abraham went down into Egypt to sojourn there for the famine was Grievous in the land now a famine is the result of rain in the Middle East they are greatly dependent upon the rains of November and December they pretty well know if they lack the rains of November and December that the other ten months are going to be lacking but one of the things about a famine is the lack of rain but is also the presence of strong winds from the east that blow it's not bad enough that we're out of water but now hot winds blow from the east if the lack of water and the blasting of the winds is not enough the winds bring with them below cos and the caterpillar these insects they begin to eat you see when families cheong famines determine the size of our altar when famines come to our lives it is revealed at that time what kind of an altar that we have do you have an altar that you can stay on when it's a dry altar do you have an altar you can stay on when the winds of adversity are blowing in the hot arid we is burning your face do you have an altar that you can stand on for every crop you've ever planning to watch the locust and the caterpillar come in and begin to devour church today we must personally individually have altars of which we can stand upon for what if the next separation we have is 90 days what if the next separation that we have is longer I need an altar I need a personal altar Abraham's altar was not strong enough to which I thank God that he let this be revealed Abraham's altar was not strong enough because we are told in Genesis 12 Genesis chapter 12 and verse number 11 and it came to pass when he was come near to enter into Egypt let me read verse 10 please and there was a famine in the land she just built an altar and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there for the famine was Grievous in the land the word soldiering means a shortened is it just a short visit famines here there's no water there's hot winds let's go down to Egypt Egypt's got food Egypt's got water Egypt always promises that it can provide it maybe elementary today but can I tell you change nobody do you like Jesus chain nobody treats you like the Lord please don't ever be deceived the world Egypt does not have what we our altar house what we need it might be dry it might be hot I might be losing things but if I can stay on my altar Egypt doesn't have here's some of the problems with Egypt and it came to pass when he was come near to enter into Egypt that he said in this area his wife behold now I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon therefore it shall come to pass when the Egyptians shall see thee that they shall say this is his wife and they will kill me but they will save me alive say I pray thee thou art my sister that it may be well with me for thy sake and my soul shall live because of thee now I'm going to show you how the altar how an absence of the altar can get you out of your right thinking when we get away from the altar our own altar I'm not talking about strong showers altar I'm not talking about altar where we get arm and arm and we pray one for another because I don't know I don't know when we're going to be able to go back to reach over let your hands on somebody beside you but maybe code that 19 has taught me that I may be dependent upon your prayers on me and not my own prayers you see when we get away from the altar and we begin to believe that Egypt's got our answers then we become are you listening self-centered self-centered he says to his wife Sarah matter-of-fact Sarah represented the promise without Sarah there'll be no Abram with dealt without Sarah there'll be no Isaac without Sarah there'll be no fulfillment but when we leave our altar and we begin to think Egypt has our answers Church we don't we don't think the way that we ought to think we don't we don't process information the way because listen to what he does he turns to his wife and he says in essence I'm concerned about myself here I'm concerned about myself if you and I go down into Egypt and they see us together as husband and wife they will kill me you sense a little self-centeredness they will kill me for your sake now say that you're my sister let's change our identity say that you're my sister you see your wife is the only one that you are one with Bible never says I'm one with my children the Bible never says I'm one with my siblings the Bible never says I'm one with my parents the only time the Bible uses that will one is our wife and he said now we need to change our relationship you need to say that you're my sister that means we're kin to each other can I tell you to be a part of the world you have to change your identity about your alter anyone that you have to change your feelings and vocabulary about how you feel about Jesus Christ if you have to change things you say out of the word out of your relationship for fear of offending them they are not your friend what we need as never before if we're going to climb the mountain if we're going to be a better people if another koban 19 we don't need to have a sister we don't need to be kin to the church we need to be one with the church we don't need to be well I trying to go to that church I try to have some family to go to that church we need to be husbands and wives that family that stand apart and say I've got an altar let the rain cease to come I've got an altar let the wind ceased let the winds come I've got I've got an altar I sent so much self-centeredness with Abram how self-centered he is well what do you expect he has left what do you expect he has left his altar people that leave the altar becomes self-centered it's only about them he becomes self-centered look at what he did with Sarah he put her in harm's way be a man Abram if you're going to go to Egypt be a man and if you die die fighting for your wife be a man if you're going to go to Egypt but then again when you leave your altar you're not thinking clearly why would you go anywhere for fear of losing your mate why would you go anywhere if you had a fear of the future in that place the world has no future for our marriages the world has no future for us as individuals the world has no future for our children let us not be deceived the church the peers the Sunday School class the youth group the youth rallies the camp meetings these all play a role in the future of our children our children have a chance to live for God if they're raised not in Egypt but if they're based upon the altar I'm gonna tell my children it might get dry but this is the altar of God the winds might blow but this is the altar of God the locusts my time but this is self-centeredness you see Abraham comes become self-centered the sin of self-centeredness has its roots in the very first sin that was ever committed don't you see if you see little self-centeredness in this worship leader he was the first worship leader in heaven Isaiah 14:12 saved you sense a little self-centeredness say Amen every time you sense a little self-centeredness in the scriptures that I read this Isaiah 14 12 through 14 is talking about Lucifer and the voice says how I've not fallen from heaven o Lucifer son of the morning how did you fall how art thou cut down to the ground which did weaken the nation's that verse number 12 is a is a question how did you fall how will you cast down to the ground here's the answer in verse 13 for thou hast said in thine heart I will sound like self-centeredness to me don't it I will ascend into heaven I will exalt my throne above the stars of God I will sit also in the Mount of the congregation in the sides of the north I will ascend above the clouds I will be like the Most High you know what took an anointed cherub an anointed praise leader Lucifer son of the morning a person that was the closest to God that any other spiritual that created me you know what took him away self will I will he didn't use the word we he used the word I I will can I tell you what the mistake of Abraham made he became self will when he left the altar can you imagine having to turn to your wife and saying baby I'm taking you somewhere and when we go in here and just say you're my sister I don't know about you but I know what my wife would say about that baby we're going to go some places and you may be you you may be and you may be in danger you may you may be in danger I happen to know of horrible situations horrible situations where a husband of the wife either one decided to follow their made out into the world well my husband wants a woman like this my husband wants a woman that does this my my man wants a woman that does like this or vice versa and I know of situations of a man getting his wife out of church and giving her down in Asia and he wakes up down in Egypt he wakes up down there and figures out man listen listen I'm ready to leave the party come on honey I'm ready to leave this party where there smoking marijuana I'm ready to leave this party where there playing strip poker I'm ready dude this ain't no place for my wife but when you go to get the arm of your wife she looks at you and says I'm not ready to leave and when you get a little strong with her some man a little bigger than you comes over and says hey bub I'll bring her home yeah I bet you will but you see that's the danger when we get self-centered we don't take into consideration that we're going to go down to Egypt but Egypt's want to want your Sarah Egypt's going to want your promise Egypt never give you anything that God can use to produce now I didn't say Egypt wouldn't give you anything I said Egypt would not give you anything that God could use to produce because when Abram gets down to Egypt it happened just like he said they came up she's my sister somebody says that you oh that's my sister there that's not my wife that's my sister there well word got into Pharaoh's house Pharaoh sent our men down and they seized Cerie Cerie eye and they took her into the palace whoa don't you know that it is that time when Abraham woke up that next morning alone that he starts saying what a mistake I've made when he stood outside the palace of Pharaoh's house and knew my god my wife is in there my wife is in know what what did I do but wait a minute now Avram here comes a flock of sheep here comes a flock of goats here comes bags of gold and bags of silver and what's this all about Pharaoh gives you this Pharaoh gives you this for your wife Sarah but once again the world will give you something but it can never be what God will use to produce a promise to you all the money can't make us happy Church all the money can't make you happy Church you can't lose enough weight to make yourself happy you can't make enough money to make yourself happy you can't get a job you can't get a mat you can't get a house you can't get all of enough of these things and once you get them once you get them you'll see how empty it is unless you have an altar that's just you and God our altar that we're building together somebody say self-centeredness it was in Luke chapter 12 verse number 13 and one of the company said unto him speaking to Jesus said master speak to my brother that he divided the hare inheritance with me and he said unto him man who made me a judge or a divider over you can you imagine brother Glasco can you imagine having God incarnate with you having God incarnate Jesus Christ seawalker blind eye opener deaf ear and stopper dead razor miracle worker Promise Keeper could you imagine having him in the midst of you and your concerning yourself that your brother hasn't given you all the inheritance he should have given you see when we are self-centered we live far beneath our spiritual privileges when we think about just our life and just what matters to me in my life we have God oh what a privilege it is I don't know about you but Kovac 19 has caused me to see what a privilege and opportunity it is to have the church to have one another to be surrounded with such wonderful godly people that better that are your family and I'm never going to take my church family ever again for granted I thank God even the bad ones I thank God I don't know we got a bad look and I thank God if we've got a bad when I thank God even for the bad ones and I don't believe I'll ever take regretted again an opportunity to come into the house of God and begin to worship God and begin to praise God Thank You Tobin 19 you caused me to make me some shoes to climb a mountain you caused me to do something oh let me hurry these dishes would you go ahead and come right now men you imagine having in the midst of you today the one that can heal you your wife can't fix you only God can fix you but can you imagine having him right here and all you're concerned about I wish you'd really gotten deeper into that wife in subject business I wish into really I wish you to really laid into some of these people around here now yeah you know what true sign of being self-centered is Kevin tell you a true indication you remember a few years ago when the guy came out you might be a redneck if you might be self-centered if you always find fault in others you're always finding fault in somebody else always finding fault it can be finding fault in a mate finding fault in your kids finding fault in your church you know what that's a sign of your self-centered because people that and I'll quote a very famous person talking to her children when her children would come home from school and say so-and-so is doing this mama sue ensues doing this mama let me quote a famous person to you today her name is penny carpenter what are you gonna do about it mama she said I'm not doing nothing about it because we've got enough mess in the carpenter house to deal with without having to import any from somebody else and bring them into our well is it that the truth that's the truth you've got enough to work on yourself without getting a self-centered well that one that one this man mr. Grodin opportunity God incarnates standing in the midst and all they could think about is a few dollars of an inheritance but now Jesus has a parable to go along with it he says in verse number 15 and he said unto them take heed and beware of covetousness for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth and he spake unto them expect a parable unto them saying the certain ground of a rich man brought forth plentifully now again every time you said self-centeredness I want you to say men and he thought within himself what shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits no stop right there as at an anniversary service one time they were celebrating many decades in the church and I happened to know I happen to know the situation and I happen to know that that pastor did not do build and do that Church all by self but if you just sitting there listening to the service you'd have thought he was Superman Batman spider-man all these three or one all right and after I got through preaching that night I got in the car and I'm gonna take what I told my wife I said well I just reckon he didn't have a wife did he I just reckon he didn't have anybody there to help him can I tell you self-centeredness will drive you away from your altar because there's no way you can be on an altar and be self-centered let me get back to this for a minute he said he said memory verse 17 again if you'd like say men when you sense its self-centeredness he thought within himself what shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits and he said this will I do I will pull down my barns and build greater there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods and I will say to my soul so thou has much goods laid up for many years take nineties eat drink and be merry but God said we say whatever we want to but at the end of our lives God's got something to say about it at the end of your life young person go ahead we're all our own freewill people we can do whatever we want to whenever we want to we live whatever kind of life we want to live but you listen to this five foot seven inch green eyed preacher this morning but when you breathe your last breath and you open your eyes up in the presence of God God's going to have you say and that's what I'm living my life on the altar for because when I do God's going to have say but God said thou fool this night thy soul shall be required of thee then whose shall those things be which thou has provided so he that that he that lay up treasures for himself is not rich toward God where Abraham gone down to Egypt but I don't know how many nights you're gonna paste before the palace and look up at a lamp in a window Oh God is that my Sarah is that my Sarah people that drive by this church name he said it right today I was glad when they said unto me let us go to the house of God but I submit to you there's countless people that drive by this church and they look at it in their haunted what I could have been if I had stayed on that altar what I could have been what my marriage could have been what my children should be if I had stayed on the altar if I had just kept a personal touch with God what I could be can you imagine let's just go read this in passing can you imagine how many nights Abraham tried as he looked toward the palace what Bible said that God plague Pharaoh's house some believe it was great sores it came out and the story more than likely goes something like this they sin in this house we've upset one of the gods I've got sores all over me everybody's got sores all over me all over them we've been sent one of the gods finally Sarah raises her hand and she says I it may be me what do you mean you I lied to get in here isn't it sad when we have to lie about our feelings to be a part of a crowd some of our youth today you're running with a group of young people that you have to lie about how you feel you want to talk about God you want to talk about your ministry but there are too much interesting in the latest song don't ever run with people you have to lie about who you are it's me what do you mean it's you I'm not a broom sister I'm a brooms wife and Faye wrote to Sarah and put her outside the door commanded the armies to take Abraham and Sarah and all their wealth shove them outside of Egypt and I close with this Genesis 13 one Abram now stands outside of the gate of Egypt he squeezed this tightly to his Syria I see him both crying I see Abraham saying Sarah I'm sorry Sarah I'm sorry I led you this way I see her frail little arms up around him saying Abram it's alright let's get out of this place Abram and Abram went up out of Egypt he and his wife and all that he had and a lot went with him into the south apron was very rich in cattle and silver and gold notice this and he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning between Bethel and heah unto the place of the altar yet this see this it is under the place of the altar which he had made there at the saying with me at the first and there Abraham called on the name of Lord listen to me listen to Pastor today it grieves my heart sometimes when I hear people foolishly say well that was the will of God well that was a will of God I want to pull my hair out and say it wasn't the will of God someone said well it was the will of God that your brother spent all those years in prison stop saying that it was not God's will it was not God's will he left the church it was not God's will he got on drugs it was not God's will that he took alive it was not God's will that he spent thirty four and a half years in prison it was not God's will that's all a space in his time that he left the altar and went down to Egypt but now he is in God's will he is back in church he's an usher he's testified he's working for God he is back in God's will it's not the will of God that your marriage is in trouble it's not the will of God that your children stay stay with me stay you know what Abraham did cuz he's got Sarah and they're making their way when we going I'm going back to my halter I'm going back to my altar right now I'm doing back to my ultra right now all over this building today they're men and women and young people that have thought Egypt had what you need you're talking like in Egypt you're looking like Egypt but now you're in Egypt but you find out Egypt doesn't give you a promise and you're making your way back come on home today come on home today sure every head bowed every eyes closed she's gonna put yet another bio dad I beg you in Jesus name come back to your altar today come back to your altar today come back to your altar today I beg you in the name of Jesus today daddy come back to your altar today mama I beg you come back to your altar right now come back to your geranium or to lead you in something we gotta prioritize we gotta have the right focus we gotta prioritize we gotta have the right focus I can't focus on myself anymore I can't even walk without you holding my hand I've gotta focus god I've gotta have you God I've gotta have you God you hear me this morning and I gotta have you gotta have you guys gotta have you brother Eric said I don't know how we're going to have to do this today brother brother I don't know how are we gonna have
