Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Opening text: the excellent name

  • He opens by blessing the students in the name of Jesus, saying the Old Testament priests were told to put God's name upon the people and bless them, and that tonight the revealed name is Jesus.
  • The text is read aloud together: O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth, who has set thy glory above the heavens.
  • He says he is glad he was baptized with that name called over him, but that the name is greater in his life than just remitting sins: he now wears the name and has the authority to use it.

Scriptures: Psalm 8:1

The self-existing I Am

  • The name of the Lord is a significant topic in the Bible: Enos, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob all called on the name of the Lord, and that name gathers up God's character and attributes.
  • The name rendered Lord comes from the Hebrew verb meaning to be: it signifies God's eternal existence and unchanging nature, the self-existing one who has always been.
  • Moses at the burning bush asks what he shall say when Israel asks the name of the God who sent him, and God answers: I am that I am; say I am has sent me.
  • Israel's God was personal — the creator who props his people up — unlike the Canaanites' gods: Baal the image of a man, Molech a king's statue in whose burning arms firstborn children were laid, and a third simply a great marble pillar that could not see, hear, or talk.
  • God warns Israel to worship no other God, for the Lord whose name is Jealous is a jealous God; his jealousy is not restriction but love — he gives commandments to bless his people and keep them from wasting their lives, and he is jealous when they flirt with the world.

Scriptures: Exodus 3:13-14; Exodus 34:14

The trail of prophecy to the child

  • Through the Old Testament God kept revealing his names — the eternal one, the mighty one, God Almighty, the all-sufficient one, the master, the most high God, the everlasting God, the Lord will provide, the Lord who heals, the Lord is my banner, the Lord is my peace, the Lord is our righteousness, the Lord of hosts — until the climax came in one name.
  • The angel tells Joseph: she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins — one name in a capsule, since sin is the root of every problem in the world.
  • Paul says God has highly exalted him and given him a name above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, in earth, and under the earth — angels, men, and the demonic realm all bow to that name.
  • Philip tells Nathaniel, we have found him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets did write, and the sermon walks the trail they read: the seed of the woman who would bruise the serpent's head; the promise to Abraham that in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed; the same promise renewed to Jacob at the ladder.
  • Isaiah narrows it further: a virgin shall conceive and bear a son called Emmanuel, God with us; unto us a child is born whose name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace; and the same prophet foretold his death — he made his grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death, having done no violence.
  • Zechariah priced him at thirty pieces of silver, cast to the potter in the house of the Lord: Judas took that price for the one who could multiply loaves, raise the dead, and walk on water, then brought the blood money back too late — people who never see the value of the house of God sell it short for far less.

Scriptures: Matthew 1:21; Philippians 2:9-10; John 1:45; Genesis 3:15; Genesis 12:3; Genesis 28:13-14; Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9:6; Isaiah 53:9; Zechariah 11:12-13

The name in the last words of Jesus

  • Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all end with Jesus giving instructions about his name. Matthew: all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth — go teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
  • Mark: he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; these signs shall follow them that believe — in my name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues.
  • Luke: thus it is written that Christ should suffer and rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
  • John: these are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life through his name; and Jesus promises, whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

Scriptures: Matthew 28:18; Mark 16:16-17; Luke 24:46-47; John 20:30-31; John 14:13

Pentecost: call on the name, be baptized in the name

  • Peter preaching on the day of Pentecost declares that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved: it takes calling on the name of Jesus to be saved, not just thinking on it — and when the sinner calls, the Savior comes running.
  • Peter tells the house of Israel that God has made that same Jesus, whom they crucified, both Lord and Christ; pricked in their hearts they ask what they shall do, and Peter answers: repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • He answers the objection that 'in the name' means only in the authority of the name: Luke, who wrote both his Gospel and Acts, knew the word authority and used it in both books, yet wrote the name — the difference between doing it in Jesus' name and not is the difference between doing it right and not, and salvation is too serious for substitutes.
  • Acts 4:12 declares it is the only name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved, and through the book of Acts the name of Jesus was the name used in baptism — in Acts 2, Acts 8, Acts 10, and Acts 19.

Scriptures: Acts 2:21; Acts 2:36-38; Acts 4:12

The three uses of the name, and the call tonight

  • The name was also used for healing: silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee — in the name of Jesus Christ rise up and walk; and James directs the sick to call for the elders, who pray over them anointing with oil in the name of the Lord — and the name of the Lord is Jesus, as the voice told Saul when he lay flat on his back and looked up into the bright light.
  • Third, the name was used to cast out devils: Paul, grieved by the damsel who followed them many days, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her, and it came out the same hour.
  • He closes by pressing the name on the house: do not live beneath your privilege in God, and do not only exercise that name on a Wednesday night — speak the name of Jesus over your home, your family, your sickness, and your battles; some are baptized in that name before the service ends.

i now have the authority to use that wonderful name lord bless us tonight as we study your word in jesus name we pray amen amen you may be seated the name of the lord is a significant topic in the bible it's something that shouldn't be brushed over when you hear the term the name of the lord enos called on the name of the lord abraham built altars and called on the name of the lord isaac built altars and called on the name of the lord jacob built altars and called on the name name of the lord a lot of bible characters in the old testament a lot of bible characters in the old testament called on the name of the lord the reason the name of the lord is of great importance to us it it encompasses the various names and titles that are revealed in his character in god's attributes one of the most prominent names in the bible is wh whw it's often rendered in the english english lord lord it's translated to us lord which is derived from the hebrew verb and uh it's i'll just spell it i to butcher the pronunciation h a y a h and it means to be it means to be this name lord signifies god's eternal god's eternal existence and his unchanging nature so when they would call on the name of the lord they would call on the name of the lord they were calling upon god's eternal eternal existence always been and always will be and he is unchanging in his in his nature we look at the historical background in ancient israel names were held of great significance often reflecting the character or the role of the individual the name of yahweh was said to moses when moses said in exodus chapter 3 standing there at the burning bush or kneeling there at the burning bush in exodus 3:13 moses having a conversation with the lord says to the lord l and moses said unto god behold when i come unto the children of israel and say unto them the god of your fathers has sent me unto you and they shall say unto me what is his name what shall i say unto them moses is saying i'm going to go down to egypt and i'm going to demand the release of over two million people from bondage to to egypt and when i demand that i'm going to say the god of the hebrews or the god of of the the god of the hebrew children they're going to say unto me what is his name they're going to want to know the name of this god verse 14 and god said unto moses i am that i am and he said thus shalt thou say unto the children of israel i am ha seen sent me unto you in other words that word there the name of the lord means the self existing one the self existing one so when people want to say well where'd god come from you answer with one phrase he is self-existing he has always he has always been we are not eternal we're created by an eternal god but we're not eternal our minds at the place that we're at right now we cannot comprehend eternity but we can gras faith and faith says he is the self existing one we look at the the name of the lord in the cultural context of israel in the ancient near eastern context names of deities were often associated with with specific attributes or functions the israelites understanding of god's name was unique as it conveyed a personal relationship with their creator so when israel worshiped the lord the self existing one the self-existing one it spoke of a relationship with their creator that they were actually worshiping and calling upon the name of the creator the name of the one that caused the sun to shine the name of the one that was the creator but not so with the neighboring canaanites of which they're called heathens because they're worshiping many deities they're worshiping many gods was unusual wasn't unusual their god their god was the image of their mind they never created a god and of course we understand this these false gods are man's invention there is no god but one there is no god but one there may be as the bible said god's many and lords many but unto us there's but one god all other gods so so called gods are the product of imagination that's what happened with sin in the beginning god created man in his image and his likeness and then man fell into sin and he turned around and created god in man's own image and in man's likeness is it any wonder that they worshiped a famous god of baal and do you know the image of baal was simply the image of a man was simply the image of a man now if you if you if you worshiped a god that was of the image of a man could you see how that image would be changing over time maybe when a man is strong in his youth you would see your god as a strong god but what about when the man grows old and elderly and can't even walk you change the image of your god to meet what you have placed there so god bell the god bell that they worshiped was simply the image of a man there was another famous god in the canaanite culture called moik and molech was the image of a king the image of a of a king had his hands uh a statue of a king had his hands out like mine are there was a a furnace down below and to appease to please the god m and to have his blessings upon the rest of your children sister nash you had to take your firstborn and lay them in the hot burning arms of molech and let molech burn that baby alive and then you walked away knowing that molech will bless the rest of our children there was another god called chun and he was simply a pillar a big a big marble pillar and i guess that they look to him or it i should say for support boy i'm so glad that we have embraced the god of the bible who is he he is the i am that i am he's the self-existing one he never changes he's as much god right now tonight as he was 8,000 years ago and he'll be as much if by chance the rapture of the church is another 10,000 years away he'll still be as much god 10,000 years from today as he's always been because he is the almighty self-existing never changing god and i believe we ought to thank him right now for that a doctrinal explanation the name of the lord represents his authority his power in his presence is it any wonder that in psalms chter 8 verse one that i read tonight you you notice if you'd put that one back on the stream for us you notice how it starts off with that that letter o oh lord that's because that was an expression of tr tremendous joy that was an expression of excitement because how can you think about a god such as this and the gods of the canaanites bale moik and chayon and not look at your god and not have a burst of praise oh lord our god look that personal look at that personal thing oh lord lord our lord oh bale wouldn't get personal with you molech wouldn't get personal with you chayon would not get personal with you i mean how can you develop a relationship with a statue that can't see can't hear can't talk you got to move it you got to paint it you got to plaster up all the cracks and the pillars you got to prop it up when a wind blows it down but god says i am the self-existent exting one you don't prop me up i prop you up you don't take care of me i take care of you oh lord our lord how excellent is thy name how excellent how majestic is thy name you got to understand something about this god god that we serve um he wants our full worship he wants all of our heart he doesn't mind if you love things matter of fact he promotes us to love things our spouses our families our fellow men our brothers and our sisters but what he does want us to do is to love him supremely to love him to love him above all others it's interesting in exodus 34 and4 and just bear with me a little bit because i think sometimes we just want to jump into acts 238 and talk about the name when if we can really dig it out of the bible we'll we'll see more of the importance of the name but in exodus 34 in verse number 14 god speaks to israel and god says for thou shalt worship no other god kind of makes sense doesn't it why would he say well why would he say now i heard u i heard um um well i really don't want to say her name because i don't want to give her any credit in the house of the lord but she was probably the original woke woman uh on television all right she's probably the original uh woke one and she says that she was in church and said where she opened her mind up where she opened her mind up was the preacher used this text here and he she said when he read this text for thou shalt worship no other god for the lord whose name is jealous is a jealous god and she said i just thought to myself how can you be jealous of nothing there must be more out there and said that's where i expanded my mind well if somebody could have really got a hold of her and truly woke her the real woke all right they could have said that when he says he's jealous over you that means number one he gives you a commandment to keep you from wasting your life and wasting your time he doesn't give you a a commandment to restrict you he gives you a commandment to bless you now if there's no other god and we know there's not why do you want to waste your time looking for another of god it would be a waste of your time but not only that he wants you to know how he feels about the relationship all right how he feels about the relationship when you start flirting with the world god gets jealous of you as a young boy i i've got an image of jealousy of what jealousy can do i've got an image of jealousy kathy i got an image of jealousy of what jealousy can do i i don't know how old i was seven or eight years old my our father worked at free service tire company on magnolia street in downtown knoxville and we would go down sometimes mama would take us down early friday to to to get dad's check and all of that but there was sometimes that that that dad would take me down an alleyway to a little hamburger place called the blue circle anybody remember the blue circle anybody remember the blue circle and um so we went and we we we sat down and had little stools you sat down a little counter and all of a sudden i noticed kind of a ruckus the first thing i noticed a man was leaning over the counter and he was really close to the woman making the hamburgers i mean and she was really really close to him too and there was face to face and and and and and he was he noce the fellow was leaning way over the counter this woman was leaning the other way right way they were face to face all loveby du until the man's wife who's leaning over the counter come in and they was a cat fight hair pulling are you ain't never seen daddy grabbed me up c kenneth let's get to let's get out of here we well i mean they were clawing hamburgers were flying ketchup bottles were flying and i remember daddy saying that's a jealous woman son that's a that's a jealous woman do you know when we flirt with the world god gets jealous over us no wonder things start falling apart in our lives when we start getting a little bit of the world and he's not going to understand it he he's not going to understand it brothers she ain't going to understand she finds a number on your phone and said who's that number who who's that number oh well that's a m matter of fact matter of fact i her little joke the other day a man sitting on the front porch and uh his wife came out took a skillet yeah bammed him on the back of the head he said what in the world you hit me for she had a little note it said the polly polly called he said oh he said oh woman that that that that's a that's a that's a horse i that that that's a horse i've been betting on down at the racetrack and oh it's a okay i'm so sorry well the next day she come out worn out with that pan again said what did you do that for said your horse just called the house said that's why i hit you bo you think some of these women you think our wives a shouldn't if they do they're they're they're they're probably a little woke but uh they find a number on your phone you start oh we we're just friends we kind of go out to lunch and she she gets me and i get her and and and now nothing's going on we you know you think your wife's going to oh i i understand i yeah she ain't going to understand you're going to be right back there in my office after church tonight all right cuz there may be another blue circles about to happen around here well god loves us he said i am jealous over you i am jealous over you for my name is jealous i have given you i have given you my name can you all say praise the lord lord the name of god the names of god the names of god in the old testament reveal various aspects of his character his nature his relationship with us each name carries a significant meaning and provides insight into how god interacts with his creation the many names and i'm only i'm only going to mention a few of the names in the old testament yahweh simply means i've talked about it i am the eternal one elohim god the mighty one el shi god almighty the se the alls sufficient one adoni the master el elon the most high god elam the everlasting god jehovah jyra the lord will provide jehovah rafa the lord who heals jehovah nii the lord is my banner jehovah shalom the lord is my peace jehovah syanu the lord is our righteous the jehovah sabio the lord of host and it goes on and goes on and goes on and all through the old testament all through the old testament god kept revealing his names he kept revealing i'm this and that but now it comes to where we're at tonight comes to where we're at tonight and what happened to where we're at the climax the ultimate fulfillment of god's plan came in matthew 1 and 21 when the angel said to joseph and she shall bring forth a son matthew 1:21 and thou shalt call his name jesus for he shall save his people from their sin one name one capsule you do realize that sin is the root for every problem in the world today sin is the root of every problem in the world today so one name in a capsule he shall save deliver his people from their sin paul would take it a step further in philippians chapter 2 and verse number n paul would try to shine the light on the importance of the name he says wherefore god hath also so highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name stop right there for a moment let's explain something we said carp and the bible says in the old testament his name shall be el shi his name shall be called i am that i am that is true of what you're saying but the climax the highest name given to god in the flesh is the name of jesus for all those names that i mentioned just a moment ago jehovah shabath jehovah sisu jehovah shalom jehovah nii jehovah rafa jehovah gyra el alom uh el elon uh adoni elshadai elohim and yahweh all of those names are in a capsule into one name and paul says paul says wherefore god have highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name that at the name of jesus every knee should bow of things in heaven and of things in earth and things under the earth three three things are mentioned that the name of jesus affects that every knee should recognize and bow in surrender and submission to the name of jesus christ i i i just want you to know tonight that if we could really put into practice the name of jesus jesus and really submit and yield our lives to the name of jesus there's nothing on this earth that can defeat us there is nothing under the earth and many bible commentaries and i i choose to believe this that when it says every knee should bow of things in heaven of things in earth and things under the earth it is talking about the demonic realm the the demons of this world the evil vile spirits that come disguised as peace and joy and fulfillment but at the name of jesus every knee bows on the earth every angel at the name of jesus every knee in heaven has to bow and at the name of jesus every demonic spirit must give way to the name of jesus now church family tonight the name of jesus is not only a personal identifier don't just think well that's just a that's just a personal identification of the name of jesus but it's a profound identification of his identity his mission and his authority it invites you and i to enter into a realm that we don't have the power on our own but at the name of jesus it's our connector at the name at the name of jesus well turn with me to john 1 and 45 jesus comes on the scene and he begins to call disciples to follow him john 1:4 5 philip findeth nathaniel and saith unto him we have found him of whom moses in the law and the prophets did write jesus of nazareth the son of david they said we have found him probably some of the most beautiful words that could be recorded we have found him of whom moses writer of the first five books of the bible of whom moses and the prophets writers of the rest of the old testament of whom moses and the prophets did wr jesus of nazareth the son of the son of joseph now follow with me tonight do you know i i really think that these uh modern day things have really robbed us um probably i i i would be safe to say there's probably of a crowd this size in the glove box of your cars i wouldn't say there'd be a dozen paper ma maps there all right we just don't use them anymore do we we just plug in i i i i i went to uh north carolina last night and spoke to a bunch of men and women that're planning church churches and that's where pastor erikson's at tonight and brother snitzer they're over there uh talking to men and women that are planting churches around north america but but you know i i didn't i i got in i got in a little trouble because um when i got into certain mountains because the interstate there i40 in between um uh right outside of newport and on down was been washed away and they repairing so i had to cut out through the countryside and go up through the the mountains i lost phone reception i lost all that and then i thought come on gps in the name of the lord don't let me down don't don't i'm goingon to have to call elon and get that star link or whatever that he i'm going have to call brother brother elon i'm going have to call i'm going have to call him up get him to because i'm telling you brother white if my gps went out i'd still be old there they wouldn't be singing she'll be coming around the mountain and be singing he'd be coming around the mountain all right cuz i didn't if it wasn't for that but you see how did they know he was the christ because moses and the prophets wrote about him and so they would read moses and the prophets and they would say this is what the christ is going to be like this is where the christ is going to come this is this is the christ here and here's what they had to go by moses he said we have found him of whom moses and the prophets did right right well let's find out what did moses write moses wrote genesis 3 verse number 15 it's the conversation between god and the devil and god says and i will put enmity between thee and the woman between thy seed and her seed it shall bruise thy head and thou shalt bruise his heel so moses said and they begin to look they said the seed of the woman somebody's going to be born a seed of a woman is going to be born into this world and the seed of the woman is going to crush the head of sin but then other scriptures came we come to genesis 12 verse number three moses wrote this genesis 12 verse number three it's it's god speaking to abraham and i will bless them that bless thee and curse him that curseth thee and in thee shall all the families all the families of the earth be blessed then they begin to say okay once again once again here this seed this family then we go to jacob in in genesis uh 28 and 13 this is jacob now he's there at the latter god is speaking to jacob and it says and behold the lord stood above it and said i am the lord god of abraham thy father the god of isaac the land where on thou liest to thee will i give it and to thy seed thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth and thou shalt spread abroad to the west and the east and to the north and into the south and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed now they're squeezing it down in this seed that's going to destroy sin seed the seed of the woman and and now it's coming through abraham and we jump out of the five books that moses wrote we jump into isaiah isaiah 7:14 he prophesied therefore the lord himself shall give you a sign behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and thou shalt call his name emmanuel which is uh being interpreted god with us so they begin to look that a virgin was going to conceive they didn't understand it all but they were they they were they were putting it together and then isaiah jumped again in isaiah 9 and6 for unto us a child is born unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called wonderful counselor the mighty god the everlasting father and the prince and the prince of the prince of peace so now they're trying to c they're studying this why because they want to go somewhere where do they want to go they want to go to heaven they want to be ready for the messiah they don't want to miss it that's what that's what phillip was saying to nathaniel we have found him of whom moses and the prophets did right but it didn't stop there it it didn't stop there isaiah kept writing and isa isaiah not only talked about his birth but isaiah talked about his death isaiah wrote hundreds of years before bethlehem he wrote this in isaiah chap 53 and verse number n speaking of the messiah and he made his grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death because he had done no violence neither was any deceit in his mouth he was buried in a borrowed tomb joseph of armea who was a wealthy man he was buried in that tomb why was he buried in that tomb because god's trying to give us a gps and he's trying to see this is him th this is this is him not not only that the prophet zachariah he jumps on zechariah 11 verse number 12 see if you can find what zachariah is trying to prophesy about now this is hundreds of years before christ he says in zechariah 11:12 and i said unto them if you think good give me my price and if not forbear so they weighed for my price my price 30 pieces of silver and this is someone talking about put the value on me tell me my value tell me what i'm worth there was a conversation between judas is carry it and the religious rulers of what would it take for you to betray jesus it's interesting what price do you get for a man that can multiply fish and loaves what price do you put on somebody that can raise the dead what price do you put on somebody that can walk on water and calm the storms control the weather if you please what price do you put on him well you see when you really don't know who he is you sell him at the price that you value him from and that is a slave you see some people some people if they never see the value of the church they'll sell her real short if they don't see the value of the house of god oh they'll sell it out for a ball game if they don't see the value of the house of god they'll sell it out for other activities in the world because they'll see other things outside of this place more important than what goes on in this place and i just want want to tell you tonight at this time there's nothing more important for you to be doing in this city right now than being right where you're at listening to the precious eternal lasting word of god 30 pieces of silver but that doesn't stop there verse 13 and the lord said unto me cast it unto the potter a goodly price that i was prized at of them and i took the 30 pieces of silver and cast it to the potter in the house of the lord what's that speaking of remember when judah sold him out 30 pieces of silver lucky guess right no prophecy but not only that we know that sometime later judas changed his mind and repented and brought the 30 pieces of silver back to the house of the lord and basically was saying take it back take it back i want jesus back take this back and they said what is that to us you go see to that they wouldn't give him back and he took the 30 pieces of silver and threw it on the floor and went out took a rope and hung himself committed suicide and the r rulers got together and said what are we going to do with this silver on the floor we can't we can't put it back in our holy tra measy because it's blood money and somebody says you know there needs to be a a we need to purchase a graveyard we need to purchase a a graveyard where poor people can be buried and they said there's an old piece of of real estate out inside of town it's where they they throw away broken pieces of pottery broken pieces of pottery and they bought the potter's field with that blood money there we have found him and i'm building on all of this to set you up there's something about his name there's something about the name of jesus christ well let me let me skip over a few things only for time's sake there's something about his name there's something about his name matthew mark luke and john all end with jesus giving instructions about his name matthew 28:18 jesus came and spake unto them saying all power is given unto me in heaven and earth go ye therefore and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost ma mark 16:16 these are all these these are these are the the last words of jesus recorded by these four gospel writers mark 16:16 look at this jesus said he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved he that believeth not shall be damned these signs shall follow them that believe in my name shall they cast out devils they shall speak with new tongues jesus in luke 24:46 and jesus said unto them thus it is written and thus it behoove christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations beginning at jerusalem john 20 and: 30 many other signs truly did jesus in the presence of his disciples which are not written in this book but these are written that you might believe that jesus christ is jesus is the christ the son of god and that believing please get a hold of this now and that believing you might have life through his name john 14: 13 jesus said whatsoever you shall ask in my name that will i do that the father may be glorified in the son throughout john 14 john 15 john 16 jesus let them know you've not asked anything in my name up to this point but the day will come that you shall ask in my name and i will do it when peter preached on the day of pentecost he comes to acts chapter 2 and explains the prophecy of the outpouring of the holy ghost and in acts chap 2: 21 he's explaining it and he says and it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the lord whosoever shall call on the name of the lord shall be saved whosoever shall call on the name of the lord shall be saved i didn't write it but i sure am going to obey it and i sure do believe it you got to be able to call on his name to be saved not think on his name you got to call on his name now i know there would be those there that say well what about people that don't have the ability to speak well god took care of that god helped them to have language in their hands and i'm glad i always see reports around our fellowship uh through different organizations of people that cannot hear and cannot speak receiving the baptism of the holy ghost they cannot they they cannot they cannot say it like we say it they say it with their hands and they make noises but god honors that i'm going to tell you it takes calling on the name of jesus to be saved i'm not making i'm i'm i'm not making much to do about this that's just the way that it is you have to call on his name to be saved and oh when the sinner calls on his name the savior comes running when the sinner calls on his name the savior comes running peter preached he said in verse 36 of acts 2 therefore let all the house of israel know assuredly that god hath made that same jesus whom you have crucified both lord and christ when they heard this they were pricked in their heart and said unto peter and to the rest of the apostles men and brethren what shall we do then peter said unto them are you ready church then peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the holy ghost now i want to i want to just very quickly very quickly i want to tell you i have heard so many people try to explain this way well that doesn't mean actually calling out the name that means in the authority i'm baptizing in the authority of the name of jesus christ now that's interesting i'm b it's it's really your you're making much to do about this i'm i you're the minister and i'm baptizing you in the authority of the name of jesus christ that's interesting that that argument is raised up to explain a way people being immersed in water with having the minister call the name oh by the way acts 4:12 it's the only name the only name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved but they try to use this go well that's the minister has the authority that's interesting they use the word authority because why didn't luke ed the word authority why didn't luke say then peter said to them repent and in the authority that jesus christ has put in me i baptize you why didn't he he knew the words as a matter of fact i i looked it up i did research now you do know that luke wrote the book of luke and you do know that luke wrote the book of acts luke knew the word authority as a matter of fact i looked it up under the king james version and luke uses the word authority seven times in the book of luke he uses the word authority in the book of acts acts he uses the word authority four times in the book of acts because people are doing great harm to themselves when they're saying that they have the authority to baptize and they said that's what that name means there in the name repent and be baptized every one of you in the authority of jesus christ not so you got to call on the name of the lord to be saved and when peter said peter said the words repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the remission of your sin oh brother carpenter i i i think we're making we're thinking you know what's the difference i'll tell you what the difference is the difference is you're not doing it right unless it's done in jesus name now that's the difference i mean if you want to go bake you a cake and when when the cake calls for two eggs you put an egg and a half you have at it sweetheart if you want to make a turkey and you and and it says keep it in there for two and 1 half hours per pound and you want to go three and a half just go ahead and burn the turkey but we're talking about salvation we're talking about salvation here and if there's something that i want i want to get on god's gps i want to get on god's gps and say we found him we we found him right right right here right here is the way to be baptized the name of jesus in the book of acts and i i i i'll carry this on i i'll carry this on next week or i believe brother fish is preaching next wednesday night the next wednesday night i i i'll just try lord will i'll come back but the name of jesus used through the book of acts was used for baptism no nowhere in the in the bible was anybody baptized in from from when the church started in acts chapter 2 and that's where the church started when people want to say well under the law john baptized and and and too many people watch hollywood movies and say when i know john baptized them in the titles john did not baptize them in the title i don't care what hollywood makes the movie i i i'm telling you you got more faith in your t tv than you got you got your bible you you better get in your bible all right i know john and you don't really have to go into the water cuz i john baptist he's on tv he bapti he baptizing well they used the name of jesus when the church started to baptize acts 2 they were baptized in the name of jesus acts eight they were baptized in the name of jesus acts 10 they were baptized in the name of jesus acts 19 they were baptized in the name of jesus throughout the epistles they are referred to as the people that called on his name paul went to jerusalem to arrest people says it that called on this name so the name of jesus was was was uh used to remit sins yes the name of jesus was used for healing silver and gold have i none but such as i have give by thee in the name of jesus christ rise up and walk so the name of jesus was used for healing that's why james said is there any sick among you let them call for the elders of the church let them pray over them anointing them with oil in the name of the lord and say well it don't say jesus there well put the pieces together saul laying flat of his back looked up into a bright light and said who are you lord lord and the voice came back and said i'm jesus whom you persecute so the name of the lord is jesus the name of the lord is jesus and so we see the name of the lord jesus used in baptism when that name was called out in baptism we see the name of the lord used in healing the lame man was one of many that got healed because somebody verbally called out the name of jesus christ it's not a lucky rabbit's foot nor a for believe clover it's not the way that you pronounce it it's the faith that you have in that name i believe with everything that is within me that god came to this earth in the form of a man and they called his name jesus he lived 33 and a2 years they led him to calvary he was the sin price to pay the sin debt he died the man died is dead is anybody's ever been dead he died from my sins he died for my transgressions he died for all of my wrong and on the third day he rose from the dead victorious over death hell and the grave he turned around and he gave us the plan of salvation and he said you are dead in your sin but through repentance and baptism in my name and the infilling of the holy ghost you can be raised up from that dead had life to would you stand in worship with me for a moment there's power in that name there's power in that name there's power in that name there's power in that name i said there power in that name i said there's power in that name wave your hand if you've been baptized in that name there's power in that name help me tonight help me tonight nolan help me tonight sister moment i'm i'm going to let you go home here in a moment but i just a second i got to get this cuz i i i just got to get this off of me the name of jesus was used three ways in the book of acts it was used to remit sins in baptism it was used to lay hands on the sick and they would be healed of physical disorders but the third thing it was used to cast out devils it was used when demonic spirits would try to come around and dewar the work of god and frustrate the work of god and a little damsel demon possessed came around she followed on the hills of paul and silas and she said these are the servants of the most high god that show us the way of salvation the bible said this did she many days but paul all being grieved turned and said to the spirit i command you in the name of jesus christ to come out of her and he came out the same hour i don't know if you're here tonight if you're here tonight and you've not been baptized in that name we got water we got to change of clothes and we can baptize you tonight you just come up to the front ready raise your hand get somebody's attention say hey get the preacher tell them i want to go get baptized we'll baptize you tonight if you're
