Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The text and the promise

  • He opens the lesson by reading Mark 16:16-17 and asking what the signs that follow believers are for.
  • Tongues are presented as God's chosen sign of his presence, not as the substance of what was received.
  • He reads Acts 2:1-4 and stresses that the 120 received the Holy Ghost itself; tongues were the initial evidence.
  • He ties Joel's prophecy of the outpouring to Peter's explanation on the day of Pentecost.

Scriptures: Mark 16:16-17; Acts 2:1-4; Acts 2:36-37; Joel (book-only, as spoken)

The pattern in Acts

  • At Cornelius's house the Holy Ghost fell while Peter was still speaking, and the hearers spoke with tongues.
  • Peter's report in Acts 11 calls it the same gift given 'at the beginning.'
  • The Ephesus disciples of Acts 19 had only John's baptism; after baptism in Jesus' name and Paul's hands they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

Scriptures: Acts 10:44-48; Acts 11:13-15; Acts 19:1-6

Praying in the Spirit

  • Jude 20 is read as praying in the Holy Ghost building up the believer's faith.
  • In Romans 8:26 the Spirit makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered.
  • Ephesians 6:18 joins praying in the Spirit to watching with perseverance for all saints.

Scriptures: Jude 20; Romans 8:26; Ephesians 6:18

The gifts and their order

  • He reads the 1 Corinthians 12 list: the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, and interpretation.
  • Tongues with interpretation in the assembly equal prophecy; tongues without interpretation are prayer directed to God.
  • He reads 1 Corinthians 14 at length and teaches decency and order: two or three messages, each interpreted, and no confusion in the church.
  • Philip's four daughters prophesied; prophecy in the New Testament church is not confined to men.

Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 12:1; 1 Corinthians 12:8-10; 1 Corinthians 12:28; 1 Corinthians 12:29-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-40; Acts 21:9

Tongues and the table

  • He reads 1 Corinthians 11:4-5 on praying and prophesying with heads covered and uncovered, and the verse on a woman's hair given for a covering.
  • He reads the institution words of 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 and the self-examination of verse 31.

Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 11:5; 1 Corinthians 11:4; 1 Corinthians 11:23-24; 1 Corinthians 11:31

Scripture index: Mark 16:16-17; Acts 2:1-4; Acts 2:36-37; Acts 10:44-48; Acts 11:13-15; Acts 19:1-6; Joel (book-only, as spoken); Jude 20; Romans 8:26; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Corinthians 12:1; 1 Corinthians 12:8-10; 1 Corinthians 12:28; 1 Corinthians 12:29-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-40; Acts 21:9; 1 Corinthians 11:5; 1 Corinthians 11:4; 1 Corinthians 11:23-24; 1 Corinthians 11:31.

chapter 2 verse number 1 through 4 somebody say praise the lord and when the day of pentecost was fully come they were all in one accord in one place and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting and there appeared unto them clothed in tongues like as a fire and it set upon each of them and they were all filled with the holy ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance you place your bible down bow your heads with me right now let's pray father we love you tonight lord we give you praise and we give you honor and we give you glory this evening lord i ask you tonight that you would anoint my lips of clay god that you would touch me lord and anoint me to teach this congregation i thank you for the holy ghost i thank you lord for the baptism of the holy ghost tonight i ask you lord to touch there's anyone under the sound of my voice that has not yet received the baptism of the holy ghost that god you would reveal it and fill them tonight in jesus name we pray amen and amen give the lord a hand of praise before you're seated in the name of the lord in the name of the lord the year was 1977. the month was february it was a sunday night that previous friday morning in what was called a christian school chapel service this 16 year old boy then let down his guard and stopped fighting what was trying to conquer him that sus that friday morning in that chapel service the principal placed the microphone in the altar area and opened up that a student body and told the student body if there was anyone that would like to come and say something they could before i knew it i'd got out of my pew and walked to the front i'd let my guard down and i stopped fighting what was trying to conquer me i simply walked to the front and i said my name is kenny carpenter and i love you jesus i made a decision that morning i made a decision to step out and let my guard down and we all know that when decisions are made in the mind a spiritual experience is soon to come to the heart was that sunday night that sunday night there was no preaching on that february 1977 sunday night with a little nudge brother ben lee with a little nudge from your grandmother martha lee that was playing the organ on the platform what i mean with a little nudge she tried to motion me from the platform to come to the altar of which i just cast my eyes on the floor as if i didn't see her only to be poked in the shoulder by someone sitting beside me and when i looked up martha lee was standing at the end of my pew she simply said these words don't you think it's time to come and i said yes ma'am i do i came out from the pew and walked up to the altar and as our tradition is there was a group of people that lifted my hands up someone got in my ear and someone said say i love you jesus and i said i love you jesus and when i said those words i love you jesus i felt something i had never felt before i felt something that i had never in my entire life ever experienced i felt this feeling which to this day is still indescribable i felt it around like it was around my feet around my ankles i thought to myself as a 16 year old boy that knew nothing about the holy ghost i thought that feels good someone said say it again and i said it again jesus i love you and that time i felt that same spirit about my midsection here and i thought that feels good i remember thinking that feels good and then i heard a voice i heard a voice with as opposite of a feeling that what i was feeling i heard a voice and the voice simply said in my ear you are about to make a fool out of yourself no sooner than i heard that voice in my head i heard that next voice literally in my ear say i love you jesus and i said i love you jesus and when i did that same feeling of my ankles of my midsection overflowed my head and i soon found myself laying flat of my back with my hands outstretched i remember i remember laying there and for whatever reason i remember that night that my mother had wore red high-heeled shoes to church and i remember laying there and i must have turned my head to one corner and i saw my mother dancing and those two red high-heeled shoes like sewing machines going up and down and up and down i remember distinctly my tongue moving and i had no control over it i had absolutely no control over my tongue my mother asked me on the way home that night did i hurt the side of my face when i landed on the floor and i told mama i didn't i said why she said you kept rubbing the side of your face and i told her i said mother my tongue felt like it was the size of biscuit dough and that it had somehow come out of my mouth and was laying on the side of my face and i said mama i was trying to put my tongue back in my mouth that night god filled me with the holy ghost i know that i know that i know that i know that i know that god filled me with his spirit that night i know that he did now one of the reasons i know that i received the holy ghost is because of what i received by speaking in tongues is in the word of god but a man stopped me that night and he said i want to give you a second sign he said you have received the first sign and i want to give you a second sign and he said the second sign that you have received the gift of the holy ghost is in the morning when you wake up you will hear something in your head telling you that you just got emotionally high and that your tongue just got got to moving but you didn't really get the holy ghost and as sure as i'm standing here tonight i woke up that next morning at 208 black oak drive and the first thing that came to my mind was you just got happy you just got all carried away they were shouting around you and you just got all carried away but thank god for someone that told me about the second sign i've come tonight to address because we're on the journey and tonight's journey is speaking in tongues there's great confusion in christianity today on the subject of tongues and one of the reasons that there there's great confusion is that there are misapplications of what the apostle paul wrote about in reference to tongues now if you're writing this down tonight there are three one two three there are three types of speaking in tongues in the new testament there are three types that serve three different purposes number one the first is speaking in an unknown tongue speaking in other tongues unknown tongue however you'd like to say it as the outward evidence that you have been initially filled with the holy ghost it is the outward evidence that you have been filled the initial in filling of the holy ghost and of course in in mark in mark chapter 16 verse 16 jesus christ himself and 17 jesus christ himself and verse 17 said these signs these signs shall follow them that believe in my name they shall cast out devils they shall speak with new tongues it would be some time later in acts chapter 2 and verse number 1 through 4 that they gathered in an upper room in jerusalem and when the day of pentecost came the holy ghost fell in that room and in verse number four they were all filled with the holy ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance or the ability to speak another reason tongues is such a confusing subject of the bible is that people have went to far reaching attempts to discredit speaking with tongues they have tried to explain that the 120 on the day of pentecost that god enabled them to speak in other languages so that they could preach the gospel but a further examination of the entire second chapter of acts shows this not to be so we understand that there were at least 18 of the 120 that were miraculously speaking other known languages but write this down they were not preaching the gospel the bible tells us exactly what they were saying it says they were speaking the wonderful works of god what were they saying just pick the wonderful work of god creation would be a good place to start shadrach meshach and abednego protected in the fiery furnace that's another wonderful work daniel in the lion's den that's another wonderful work the red sea dividing manna coming down from heaven water coming out of a rock just go ahead and pick a plethora of all the mighty wonderful works of god there they are but listen they were not preaching the death burial and resurrection of jesus christ the bible says in acts 2 that peter's standing up with the eleven lifted up his voice and began to tell what had just happened this is that which was spoken by the prophet joel in the last days god would pour out of his spirit upon all flesh and then peter went on with his own voice to preach the death burial and resurrection of our lord jesus christ and then in acts chapter 2 verse number 37 he said let all the house know assuredly that god hath made this same jesus whom you crucified both lord and christ now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart and said unto peter and to the rest of the apostles men and brethren what shall we do so if someone tries to tell you that they did speak in tongues but that was to preach the gospel you're going to be able to present the bible truth to them it would be two years later in acts chapter 10 24 months later in acts chapter 10 when a gentile by the name of cornelius had a visitation from an angel the angel told cornelius to go down to joppa and call for one simon peter who lodgeth with simon who's a tanner he'll come to your house and he'll tell you words whereby you can be saved peter went down to the gentiles house and there in acts chapter 10 peter once again began to preach the only saving message the death the burial and the resurrection of jesus christ and then in acts chapter 10 verse 44. while peter yet spake these words the holy ghost fell on all them which heard the word and they of the circumcision now this is the jews now which believed were astonished amazed baffled cannot believe what they're seeing as many as came with peter because that on the gentiles also was poured out the gift of the holy ghost well how did they know they received it look at the next verse 4 they heard them speak with tongues and magnify god then answered peter can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized which have received the holy ghost as well as we and he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the lord then pray they him to terry certain days how did peter how did the jews that came with him how did cornelius and the gentiles know that they had received the holy ghost how did they know they spoke in other languages they spoke in other tongues unknown to them it becomes the universal sign the initial sign that one has been filled with the holy ghost well peter got in trouble with the other jews at jerusalem because he had broke a tradition and stuck his head under the roof of a gentile and that was against their traditions peter is called before the jerusalem council to answer why did you go to the gentiles and in acts chapter 11 verse 13 listen to peter peter is defending himself and he says in acts 11 13 and he which is cornelius showed us how he had seen an angel in his house which stood and said unto him send men to joppa and call for simon whose surname is peter who shall tell thee words whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved and as i begin to speak you all looking at this tonight and as i begin to speak the holy ghost fell on them watch this now as on us at the beginning you cannot say that acts 2 was a one-time thing that happened for the apostles two years later the gentiles received the holy ghost peter defends himself and he says as i was preaching the holy ghost fell on us fell on them as it did on us at the beginning it was two years later 21 years later 21 years later we come to acts chapter 19 21 years from pentecost acts 19 1 and it came to pass while apollos was at corinth paul having passed through the upper coast came to ephesus and finding certain disciples he said unto them have ye received the holy ghost since he believed let's stop right there for a moment because there's churches all over maryville churches all over east tennessee all over tennessee all over our nation and the world that tell their converts to come and put your trust and believe upon the lord jesus christ and you're not only saved but you're automatically filled with the holy ghost if that were true why does paul ask have you received the holy ghost since you believe paul writer of over half of the new testament bible would be asking an absurd question for he knew they had believed he was just in doubt of whether or not they had received the holy ghost they said unto him we have not so much has heard whether there be any holy ghost in other words what are you talking about paul we've not heard whether there be any holy ghost he said unto them unto what then were you baptized or for what purpose were you baptized why were you baptized if you've never heard of the holy ghost and they said unto john's baptism now you you've got to follow me pretty closely because a lot of people just believe that when you go from malachi the last book of the old testament to matthew the first book of the new testament that you automatically cross over from the old testament to the new testament or you automatically cross over from the law to grace grace as we know it in the bible tells us was not with matthew 1 1. it was matthew 28 it was when christ fulfilled the law and hung on a tree and took our curses and took our sins and he fulfilled the law and 50 days later a brand new dispensation would begin called the grace the strength of god dispensation and so when we talk about john we've got to realize we're still under the old testament we're still under the law and when we talk about john now they said we were baptized unto john now i want you to see john's baptism john's baptism was a baptism that looked forward it looked forward remember john said there cometh one after me sister wells there comes one after me when they were when john was baptizing when john was baptizing john was saying that they were to believe upon him which was to come it was a forward-looking baptism to the one that was to come and they said we were baptized unto john looking for the one that was to come now watch paul verse 4 then said paul john verily baptized with the baptism repentance saying unto the people that they should believe on him which should come after him which is that is on christ jesus when they heard this they were baptized in the name of the lord jesus now how's john's baptism different than our baptism john's baptism was under the law john baptized under the law his baptism looked forward to christ's coming our baptism does not look forward our baptism looks back because we are baptized for something in our past we're not baptized forward we're baptized for our past because we are baptized in jesus name john's disciples were baptized saying he's coming look forward to him the messiah is coming look forward to him but when the messiah and and some of you that that may be here tonight or may be watching that's wondering should i be re-baptized well the answer to that is if you have not been immersed in water with someone calling the name of jesus christ over you for the remission of sins i will answer that for you tonight yes you should yes you should well brother carpenter you you don't know when i uh years ago when i gave my heart to the lord and i got baptized in the creek right i got baptized in the river and got baptized at church you don't know the feeling i have i am not denying your feeling i am not even denying that god wasn't with you but what i am saying is that god has led you into further truth he has led you into father truth now the bible says jesus says it there is not a greater prophet than john jesus said it there's never been a greater prophet than john and you think of how good you felt in the river when you got baptized incorrectly of whether or not you should be baptized again would you think that if you had been baptized by the greatest prophet to ever live you would need to be rebaptized absolutely because john was under the law john's baptism looked forward to christ was to come christ came and now when we baptize in jesus name it is not looking forward i'm being baptized for the remission of my sins that are in my past he's going to take them as far as the east is from the west and he is going to cast them in the sea never to be remembered ever again against me come on church aren't you thankful for that tonight when they heard this when they heard this verse 5 they were baptized in the name of the lord jesus and when paul had laid his hands upon them follow it closely the holy ghost came on them and they spake with tongues and prophesied here we have here we have three examples in the in the new testament that when people received the baptism of the holy ghost they spake in other tongues and it's not stopped i said two years later cornelius got it 21 years later john the baptist disciples and thank god 2000 years later god is still pouring out his spirit upon all flesh and he wants all flesh to have it you hear me he wants all flesh to have it and we are those we are those witnesses well now that we have the baptism of the holy ghost and now that i have that initial in feeling of the holy ghost and have spoke in that heavenly language now that you have had and brother marshall you could have told your story tonight your story to you is just as special of my story to me all of us tonight right all of us have our story isn't it wonderful that you know that you know that you know that tongue that i spoke in that was that thing that lets me know i received the holy ghost i received it well now we go to the second tongue in the new testament go to chapter go to jude it only has one chapter go to the 20th chapter or excuse me the 20th verse of that first chapter listen to jude but ye beloved building up yourselves your most holy faith praying in the holy ghost or praying in other tongues praying in other tongues let me stop here for a moment and inject something if you pray to speak in tongues you will be most frustrated if you pray if you're wanting to receive the holy ghost and you're praying for tongues you will be frustrated but if you will just begin to glorify jesus christ just begin to worship him and be thankful unto him i promise you it's going to come upon you and just like they told me to say i love you jesus and i spoke in other tongues that's my initial infilling and then after that after that i had needs of getting prayers answered and god has this wonderful thing called praying in tongues and this praying in tongues or praying of the holy ghost jude says that you begin to build up yourselves building up yourselves how many knows we live in a world that wants to tear us down we live in a world you talk about gravity we live in a world of gravity pressure that's always wanting to pull us down brother perdue it's always wanting to beat us down but praise god he has given us a wonderful gift of a new birth but he's also put within that gift our ability to communicate with him through other tongues and as we begin to do that the bible says we're building up ourselves praying in the holy ghost praying in the holy ghost go to romans chapter 8 verse number 26 romans chapter 8 verse number 26. likewise the spirit also helpeth our infirmities what is an infirmary an infirmary is a weakness infirmary is it it's it's a weakness helpeth our infirmaries it is a weakness any anybody got a weakness some of you got a weakness right now you got too much pride to say you got a weakness all right there's people that voice their weakness tonight there's others that silenced what has got them we all got weaknesses right likewise this spirit helpeth our infirmities for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered in other words there's times god knows you don't know what you need to pray for you don't know what's coming you you don't know you don't know what's coming and honey don't we pray this way about decisions of our lives decisions we want to make decisions that will affect our future but we say god you know what's in the future not our will god but your will or god knows things we don't know what to pray for we don't know what a day may hold we don't know what the month may hold you may find yourself wondering man i was praying and all of a sudden i just started speaking in tongues and it just it just gushed out of me and gushed out of me only three days later to face something that just simply came out of nowhere you know what that was the spirit praying in tongues was coming out of you ephesians chapter 6 and verse number 18. ephesians chapter 6 and verse number 18. praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit in the spirit and watching there unto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints he said praying in the spirit we'll go to this entire chapter in a few moments but first corinthians chapter 14 and verse number 15. look at this closely paul is saying and the subject is tongues paul is saying in first corinthians 14 15 what is it then i will pray with the spirit and i will pray with the understanding also i will sing with the spirit and i will sing with the understanding also if you've never heard anyone singing in other tongues it's a very beautiful thing to hear sometimes i remember i remember on occasion sister kirby would sing in tongues she would just sing in tongues well what was she saying i don't know she doesn't know but all she knows is she was just singing in other tongues building yourself let me tell you something praying in tongues will help build you up but you won't get there by being frustrated and concentrating on tongues glorify jesus christ god i thank you that you came to this earth god i thank you that you saw me hopelessly lost in my sin without a savior god i thank you with the billions of people in this world you would choose me and reach down into my family and pull me out of my family and fill me with your spirit god god i thank you that you took all my sins to the cross and and god you you paid the debt from my god you see what's happening right now come on you see what's happening right now it'd be are you a believer whoa hallelujah hallelujah do you feel what's happening right now i'm a believer i'm a believer i believe that god came to this earth in the form of a man i believe that man lived 33 years i believe that man i believe that that man lived lived 33 and a half years so that they say i believe that man went to a cross that god man went to a cross and they nailed him to the timbers i believe that that that god man that god withdrew himself from that body and that man christ jesus cried out my god my god why hast thou forsaken me isaiah answers that question so that he can see your soul and offering of sin and he can justify many i believe that when god looks at me he looks at me through the man jesus christ on the cross and my faith is in jesus my hope is in jesus my life is in jesus i'm gonna tell you something i would get edified right now but you'd get nothing out of it but when i start talking that way i could start talking in tongues like that right there i could start talking in tongues like that right there but you know something the only one that would get built up is wah you ought to try it sometime you ought to find your prayer closet and you ought to start glorifying god and let that river start gushing out of you you're not going to understand it it'll just flow out of you but i'll tell you what you will understand when you walk out of that closet or you walk out of where you've been talking in tongues it's like you've got a renewed strength it's like you've got a renewed vision the trouble might be there but it's like you you're you're renewed you've got you've got strength to make it on come on can we praise him right now oh the only way i'm going to make it is praying in the holy ghost the only way i'm going to make it is praying in the holy ghost praying in the holy ghost i'll pray with the spirit and i'll pray with my understanding also that's the second type of tongue the first type of tongue is the initial is a sign that i have been initially filled with the holy ghost it is a tongue it is it is the initial sign that i have been filled with the holy ghost that initial sign the second is i pray in tongues and the third is where a lot of the confusion comes in and that is referred to as the gift of tongues and interpretation now listen the gift of tongues and interpretation of those tongues is one of the nine spiritual gifts to the body of christ we have nine spiritual gifts that are given to the body and one of them is someone has the gift of tongues and the interpretation of tongues first corinthians 12 and 1 follow me now now concerning spiritual gifts brethren i would not have you ignorant so he says now i'm going to talk about these nine gifts and i don't want you to be ignorant about these gifts go to verse 12 the same chapter four to one is given by the spirit the word of wisdom to another the word of knowledge by the same spirit to another faith by the same spirit to another the gifts of healing by the same spirit you will please notice you will please notice when it says to another the gifts plural not gift singular because there's more need of healing than just my physical body there's emotional healing there's scars on some of us emotionally but thank god for the gifts of healing by the same spirit to another the working of miracles to another prophecy to another the discerning of spirits to another diverse kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues so now we have this gift of tongues and interpretation which is the third type of tongues in the new testament paul is having to call order to the church at corinth and in first corinthians 12 and 28 listen to paul as he's putting order he says but god has set some in the church god has set the church up first apostles secondarily prophets thirdly teachers after that miracles then gifts of healing then then gifts of healings helps governments diversities of tongues now he's trying to cause order here because quite honestly the the the church in corinth has got all wrapped up and some are bragging about having this gift and some are bragging about having that gift he begins with a series of questions in verse 29 are all apostles i'm going to answer that so no one i'm going to answer that for you is everyone in the body of christ apostles no no is everyone in the body of christ prophets no are all teachers and please let me answer this okay are all teachers no are all workers of miracles no have all the gifts of healing no do all speak with tongues no what no all in the church do not speak with tongues okay now you've kept us here for about 37 minutes we sure did enjoy siri maybe you get her back up what do you mean well what i mean is all all of us do not have the gift of tongues and interpretation all of us don't have one of the nine gifts and so there's a lot of confusion a lot of people go and they'll teach this and they'll say do all speak with tongues no see there acts 2 acts 10 acts 9 all of that can be explained away do all speak with tongues he answers no do all interpret the answer is no then he says but covet earnestly the best gifts and yet i show you a more excellent way that's the end of chapter 12. and first corinthians chapter 13 the whole chapter is about what we all should strive to be and do and that's love that's love because i'm going to tell you i'm going to tell you something that church that i hated mama taking me to that school that i dreaded i would come home and cry to my mama and tell my mother sister wood i'm going crazy mama i'm losing my mind mama i hated to go there i hated school but when i got the holy ghost i loved everybody they had to teach me that men didn't hold the women because i just hugging everybody i was loving i did i didn't have any ego i didn't have any lust in my heart i just lugged into women i hugging everybody finally a good brother took me aside and said we don't hug women that's okay i didn't mean anything but i had it but i loved everybody i love that place i love wednesday night at 7 30. i loved it i counted down the days to the first friday and every month was youth rally i loved going to church on sunday i love going to church on sunday night i love revival you know who put that love in my heart the holy ghost put that love in my heart see when you really get the holy ghost the holy ghost to move all the hatred out it'll cause you to love your enemies it'll cause you to say i'm sorry it'll cause you to want to want to get along with each other that's that's the real baptism of the holy ghost because you'll do that paul goes into chapter 14. i'm looking at my time limit here where i should be brother purdue i'm getting like some of those younger guys i got at time where i should be right now and i'm past due right now chapter 14 verse number one paul says follow after charity that's right pursue love and desire spiritual gifts but rather that ye may prophesy prophesy that that inspirational god-given word for he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto god for no man understandeth him howbeit in the spirit he speaketh ministry how anyone could dis to could degrade speak it in tongues because you don't understand it how could anybody degrade this because what does paul just tell us when we're speaking in an unknown tongue who are we talking to how could you degrade that for he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto god for no man understandeth him how be it in the spirit he speaketh mysteries now what paul is trying to correct here in this 14th chapter is what i made just a little sister jeter just a little hint to remember a few moments ago when he was talking about the resurrection and i said i could speak in tongues right now but what would it profit you that corinthian church got so overwhelmed with building up their selves building up themselves that that entire church when they came together was just one more mass of people speaking in tongues paul wants to bring order to that because only the individual was being edified and the church the church the gathering the corporate gathering is not for the individual it's for the whole verse 3 but he that prophesy if this is why he's saying prophesy he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification to exhortation and to comfort if you're going to prophesy you're going to edify someone you're going to exhort them and you're going to comfort them he that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself but he that prophesied edify at the church i would that you all speak with tongues but rather that ye prophesy for greater is he that prophesieth then he that speaketh it tons please notice something there that's a comma not a period except he interpret that the church may receive edifying so you cannot take paul is setting some order to tongues but don't take the 14th chapter and apply it to the first tongue of the evidence of receiving the holy ghost or the second tongue of praying in the spirit he's talking about something totally different in the church verse six now brethren if i come unto you speaking with tongues what shall i profit you except i shall speak to you either by revelation or by knowledge or by prophesying or by doctrine and even things without life giving sound whether pipe or heart except they give a distinction in the sound sounds how shall it be known what is piped or a heart when we want to sing amazing grace here they don't just hit one note on the piano the notes that they play inform us that we're going to sing amazing grace he says even things where they're piped or harp except they give a distinction in the sounds how shall be known what is piped or harp for if the trumpet given uncertain sound who shall prepare himself for battle so likewise except you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood how shall it be known what is spoken for you shall speak into the air there are it may be so many kinds of voices and that word voices there is languages in the world and none of them is without signification in other words there's all kinds of different languages different tongues in the world and they're they all have a meaning therefore if i know not the meaning of the voice i shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian or that is a foreigner and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian or a foreigner unto me even so ye for as much as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts seek that you may excel to the edifying of the church what is he saying to the corinthian church stop being stingy stop being self-centered stop going to church to get your jesus joy stop going to church so you can speak in tongues and get built up he says this is a time that you would prophesy and edify and exhort someone else verse 13. wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret now this is talking about order let's talk about order so we're not supposed to speak in tongues in church no you're not supposed to speak in tongues so loud that what is trying to go forth in english is disturbed so i just feel it bubbling up in me so did i a few moments ago but what benefit would you have got none and so paul is saying of course it was way out of order here paul is saying if you're going to speak in an unknown tongue then you need to pray that you interpret verse 14. for if i pray in an unknown tongue my spirit prayeth but my understanding is unfruitful what is it then i will pray with the spirit i will pray with the understanding also i will sing with the spirit and i will sing with my understanding also else when thou shalt bless with the spirit how shall he that occupy at the room of the unlearned say amen and thy giving of thanks seeing he understandeth not what thou saith in other words he's saying no one is going to know how to say amen to what you are saying verse 17 for thou verily give us thanks well but the other is not edified i thank my god i speak with tongues more than you all yet in the church i had rather speak five words with my understanding that my by my voice i might teach others also then ten thousand words in an unknown time see the balance this great apostle paul is bringing here see the order that he's bringing brethren be not children in understanding in other words don't be so selfish you know what a a child is it's not fair a child thinks it's all about them he says brethren be not children and understanding how bid and malice be your children but in understanding be men in the law it is written with men of other tongues and other lips will i speak unto this people and yet for all that they will not hear me saith the lord wherefore tongues are for a sign not to them that believe here it is here it is tongues are for a sign god designed the penteco his church to have a tongue that makes people on the outside curious of what's going on here tongues are a sign all right tongues is something god designed to be curious to the unbeliever wherefore tongues are for a sign not to them that believe but to them that believe not but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not but for them which believe if therefore the whole church become together in one place and all speak with tongues and they're coming those that are unlearned or unbelievers will they not say that ye are mad think about that if we're all speaking in tongues tonight and an unbeliever or someone unlearned come in they look around and say what you're crazy you're crazy but if all prophesy and there cometh in one that believeth not or one unlearned he is convinced of all he is judged of all and thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest and so falling down on his face he will worship god and report that god is in you of a truth how is it then brethren when you come together every one of you have a psalm look at this order every one of you have a psalm have a doctrine have a tongue have a revelation have an interpretation let all things be done under edifying if any man speak in an unknown tongue let it be by two or at the most by three and that by course and let one interpret but if there be no interpreter let him keep silence in the church and let him speak to himself and to god in other words if someone stands and and we've had this happen before someone stands and speaks so loudly in tongues that we we what i call a holy hush sister step we put a holy hush if there's no interpretation in a moment we move on and if that tongue breaks out again we do we stop and we do it the third time if it happens the third time and there's no interpretation i will not recognize it the fourth time because of this right here we are to go on we are to go on a tongue that is not interpreted that dominates the service we have to move on 29 let the prophet speak two or three and let another judge if anything be revealed into another that said it by let him first hold his peace this is all order for you all may prophesy one by one that all may learn and all may be comforted and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets for god is not the author of confusion but of peace as in all churches of the saints all churches of the saints now let let me just i'm so close to this verse and we're on a teaching level tonight and i just want to go 34 let your women keep silence in the churches for it is not permitted unto them to speak but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law now could you put me very quickly acts chapter 21 and verse number 9 on the screen because some say that women have no speaking voice in the church let's see what the bible says all right let's see what the bible says acts 21 9 talking about philip and evangelist and the same had four daughters virgins what did they do they prophesied um some have said brother carpenter yes they prophesied but they prophesied at home okay let's go to first corinthians 11 5. now i'm just wanting the bible to answer this okay first corinthians 11 and 5. would you would you put that very quickly but every woman that prayeth or prophesied with her head uncovered dishonored her head for that is even all one as if she was we're we're shaving okay so now first corinthians 11 is dealing with worship in the church worship worship in the church go down first corinthians 11. first corinthians 11 um first corinthians 11. would you give me four for a moment first corinthians 11 and 4. give me that give me that verse every man talking about every man praying for having his head uh uncovered dishonor his head and then i believe that goes into verse five i'm gonna correct the next verse please correct give me verse and i know i'm springing this on you i didn't put this in my notes tonight verse 23 and verse 24 would you give me those two verses of the same chapter 11 verses 23 and 24 for i have received of the lord that which i also delivered unto you that the same night in which the lord jesus was betrayed he took bread give me the next verse any given things he he he break it now give me verse number 31 please talking about he has received this of the lord verse 31 of the same chapter if we would judge ourselves we would not we would not be judged so what this is all bringing into light is paul is saying when he says that the women are to be silent in the church you've got to put it in the culture it was at and and going back to the order going back to the order let's go back to first corinthians 14 34 let your women keep silence in the churches it is not permitted unto them to speak but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law paul is talking about a woman that takes on the dominant personality of a man all right she has her role as saith the law genesis chapter 3 verse 16 places the woman in a god-ordered blessed rank of submission under the hand of a man the feminine voice and the woman is not to take on a dominant authoritative voice in leadership as a man but a woman can prophesy that's in the bible a woman can prophesy but she is to prophesy what paul is talking about she is to prophesy not in a manly there is nothing more distasteful than a woman having manly characteristics of trying to say something she is out of her place and let me add one let me balance the scales and there is nothing any more distasteful than a sissified effeminate man now this is teaching tonight all right that your women keep silence in the churches for it is not permitted under them to speak but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law if they will learn anything let them ask their husbands at home for it is a shame for the woman to speak in the church you've got to understand the culture that day the culture that day was not one man being a pastor before a congregation they were hammering out they were in the infancy of the church they got together there were prophets that would prophesy and somebody was looking at the word making sure the old testament was was being followed through and men were hammering out what they were believing and it would have been out of order it would have been out of her feminine role for a woman to stand and argue with men that's what that's saying or if you take it literal if you take that literal women are not speaking the church you get ever caught and picking a woman out of that choir and by the way is the sunday school not a sunday school room not considered a church pull every one of them women out of that shirt out of their offices and i'm going to tell you talk about keeping silence in the church we'll have a lot of silence around here but aren't you thankful the bible balances it out what you're glad for god's order i'm so glad for god's order tonight i i'm so thrilled all right verse 37. i'm going to get just four more verses and you're going to go home and boy i'd like to hear the talk in the car is going home tonight what came the word of god out from you now listen to what paul says to these corinthians tell me about it who do you think you are that's what paul is saying who you think you are what came the word of god out from you or came it unto you only you think you're really something did the word of god originate with you are you the only one that have that has it if any man think himself to be a prophet or spiritual let him acknowledge that the things that i write unto you are the commandments of the lord you what paul said paul knew that he had hit some rocks just like i have tonight and he just said i'm about to go home and i'll just tell you this if any man claims to be spiritual let him acknowledge let him acknowledge that the things that i write unto you are the commandments of the lord but if any man be ignorant 38 verses on this paul is saying if you're ignorant you deserve to be ignorant you've worked at it you've got a degree would it be horrible to get a diploma in ignorance any man is ignorant folks i'm not making this up y'all follow me now right did any man be ignorant repeat it say it with me any man be ignorant let him all right wherefore brethren covet to prophesy watch his balance i love you paul what's this balance covet to prophesy and forbid not to speak with tongues let all things be done how decently and in order isn't this beautiful first type of tongues the initial sign that i've received the baptism of the holy ghost second type of tongues i'm praying in the spirit praying in other tongues building up myself on my most holy faith third type of tongues somebody in this congregation has one of the nine gifts of the spirit which is the gift of tongues and the gift of interpretation if you're glad to be in an apostolic church stand right now and give god at nine o'clock some unprecedented praise tonight give him some worship give him some praise tonight that you are in an apostolic church glory to god glory to god glory to god glory to god i love you lord i love you lord i love you lord praise god for the truth praise god for the truth praise god for the truth thank god for the truth i thank god that i've received the gift of the holy ghost i thank god that i've got the power of god inside of me i've got resurrection power in my bosom i've got rapture ready power inside of me i thank god for the baptism of the holy ghost oh god i thank you lord whoa hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah come on church thank god come on thank you tonight thank him tonight you're in an apostolic church you're in a church of order you're a church of revival you're in a church of apostolic order glory to god hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah oh thank you lord thank you lord thank you lord thank you lord that i'm in the church and i know this is totally off the subject tonight just totally upset you tonight but i was praying today and i said god i thank you that i live in america i thank you that i live in america god i tell you if anything this war ought to do is cause of all of us to thank god we live in america thank god we live in america and then and then it's totally off subject other than just being thankful as i was thanking god to be an american i i i broke it on down and i said god i thank you that i live in tennessee come on anybody thankful you live in tennessee where we can still say god bless and merry christmas aren't you glad to be in tennessee get on out of here tonight god bless you
