Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The tongue and the heart

  • The text is James chapter 3: in many things we offend all, and the man who offends not in word is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body — the bit in the horse's mouth and the small helm of a great ship show that the tongue controls the direction of the body and of our destiny.
  • Even so the tongue is a little member that boasts great things: a little fire kindles a great matter, and the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity, that defiles the whole body; every beast has been tamed of mankind, but the tongue can no man tame — it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. God can tame what man cannot, and that is one reason he chose the tongue as the outward sign of the Holy Ghost taking up residence.
  • David said of his enemies that they have sharpened their tongues like a serpent, with adders' poison under their lips — when David sized up the enemy he talked not about their swords but about their words, and we must be careful of words spoken in anger or carnality, and of hearing words outside the word of God.
  • Jesus told the Pharisees, O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks: we do not really have a tongue issue, we have a heart issue — fix the heart and the tongue is fixed.

Scriptures: James 3:2-8; Psalm 140:3; Matthew 12:34

Signs follow believing hearts

  • In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues — the order matters: the devils are cast out of the heart first, through repentance and faith in the gospel, and then the new tongues follow; what makes it all possible is believing.
  • Hope makes not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us: God puts love where hate had been, and a heart full of hate with a mouth full of tongues is not God — like the kitchen trash, bitterness left untaken-out makes our attitudes stink until a good prayer meeting clears us.
  • Pentecost is nothing new in the Bible: God promised in Ezekiel a new heart and a new spirit, taking away the stony heart and giving a heart of flesh; in Jeremiah he promised a new covenant — not like the one made when he brought their fathers out of Egypt — putting his law in their inward parts and writing it in their hearts, forgiving their iniquity and remembering their sin no more.
  • In Deuteronomy he promised to circumcise the heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God — the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off: the greatest thing a family can keep running from generation to generation is the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

Scriptures: Mark 16:17; Romans 5:5; Ezekiel 36:26; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Deuteronomy 30:6; Acts 2:39

The law, the tabernacle, and the scapegoat

  • God gave a law he knew we could not keep: the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin and death, and what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending his own Son.
  • The law's purpose was to produce guilt and an awareness of sin — I had not known sin but by the law, for I had not known lust except the law had said, thou shalt not covet — and guilt is healthy, like pain in the body; God gave it not for us to live in, but to drive us to the only one who can take it away.
  • He also gave the tabernacle plan: the law, having a shadow of good things to come, could never with its yearly sacrifices make the comers perfect, and its priests served unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, making all things according to the pattern shown in the mount.
  • When a man sinned he laid his hand on the head of the burnt offering, transferring his sin to the animal; and on the day of atonement Aaron laid both hands on the live goat, confessed over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and sent him away bearing their sins into a land not inhabited — which is why John's cry landed with such force: behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. Jesus, who did not sin, became our scapegoat.

Scriptures: Romans 8:2-3; Romans 7:7; Hebrews 10:1; Hebrews 8:5; Leviticus 1:4; Leviticus 16:10; Leviticus 16:20-22; John 1:29

Thirst, believe, receive — and the state of all men

  • The steps of John 7 are simple: if any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink; he that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water — spoken of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive. Thirst first, then scriptural belief — you cannot believe on Jesus your own way — and the spiritual experience follows; faith must rest in the word, not in the experience.
  • Without question all men have sinned: who can say, I have made my heart clean? All we like sheep have gone astray; we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves.
  • Sin separates: if I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me; your iniquities have separated between you and your God; they shall go with their flocks to seek the Lord but shall not find him, for he has withdrawn himself — and unless sin is dealt with, the separation is eternal: as righteousness tends to life, so he that pursues evil pursues it to his own death, and the soul that sins, it shall die.

Scriptures: John 7:37-39; Proverbs 20:9; Isaiah 53:6; Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:8; Psalm 66:18; Isaiah 59:2; Isaiah 64:7; Hosea 5:6; Proverbs 11:19; Ezekiel 18:4

One door: the order of entering

  • There was order at the tabernacle: Aaron and his sons washed their hands and feet at the laver when they went in, that they die not — it was a statute forever; and there is order in New Testament salvation, because the tabernacle represented Jesus Christ, the only way into the presence of God.
  • Jesus is the door of the sheep: he that enters not by the door but climbs up some other way is a thief and a robber, but by him, if any man enter in, he shall be saved — illustrated by the preacher's own temptation to climb a ladder through his sister's window rather than come to the front door and ring.
  • No man can come to him except the Father draw him, and no man can come except it be given to him of the Father; I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father but by me. You cannot shout guilt away — you come to Jesus, who forgives freely out of an inexhaustible surplus, for he paid for sins he never committed.
  • That is why Peter did not tell the Pentecost crowd only to believe: they already believed, and asked, men and brethren, what shall we do — so he took them to the next step, repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, like laying the hand on the sacrifice. The sermon closes in a long prayer of thanksgiving for forgiveness, the new heart, and the blood.

allow me to read one scripture james chapter 3 and verse james chapter 3 and verse number 2. james chapter 3 and verse number 2 for in many things we offend all if any man offend not in word the same as a perfect man and able also to bridle the whole body i want to go back and continue and continue on the people of one language would you say that title with me today today the people of one language you may be seated james is telling us here of the power of the tongue and that the tongue is an area that we should address and that we should control he uses the simple analogies in verse number three behold we put bits in the horse's mouths that they may obey us and we turn about their whole body behold also the ships which though they be so great and driven and are driven of fierce winds yet they are turned about by a very small hymn where whatsoever the governor listeneth so he he wants to draw our attention to the horse and the bit and the ship and the helm and what he's wanting us to see you notice that word behold he's wanting us to see how just that small piece of metal called a bit and that small piece of wood called a rudder controls the direction of this massive ship or this huge animal this horse so what he's trying to let us know is is that our tongue our tongue controls the direction of our body our tongue controls the direction of our destiny notice he uses the analogy of a ship and a horse both of these the ship and a horse are both used for travel they're both used for travel so the small bit is in the hand of the writer and wherever the writer wants to go he controls the animal by the bit the helm is in the hand of the captain of the ship in whichever direction the captain wants to go that is the direction that the ship will go by the direction of the helm our tongues we are in control of them and our tongues can literally be used to lead us in tomorrow of joy or tomorrow of grief our tongues can either lead us to defeat or our tongues can lead us into victory the bible says let the weak say i am strong there's so much in the word of god and now i do know that the teaching of the word of god on the speaking of the tongue and the speaking of the word of god the positive word of god i do know that it's been taken in a whole industry has has spun off of just speaking positive things the problem with that industry is it's midas the author you only get the good out of life if you're connected to the source of life which is jesus christ and you speak the things that jesus christ in his word desires for you to speak can you say amen so he's using the analogy here and then he comes to verse number five and he says even so the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things behold how great a little a great a matter a little fire kindle he he uses the analogy of just a small spark do you realize just a small just a small flame just about wiped out our beautiful smoky mountains millions upon millions of dollars were lost where'd it start just a small flame just a small flame entire buildings and i i don't really need to elaborate i believe that you're convinced of this but yet are we convinced that just a small amount of the wrong speech can burn our lives down just the small amount of negative words can change the destiny of someone you spoke them to but on the other side on the other hand just a small word of encouragement can turn somebody's destiny just a small word of i will praise the lord i will worship god last night when brother sister erickson and copeland's sister marla roberts were there at the uh the emergency room at blunt memorial and brother donnie copeland had done chest compressions for a half an hour with brother mckeithen and finally they pronounced him dead when i got to the hospital there they were brother and sister erickson were there and they were just walking out with sister mckeithen about to go back and and view her husband and when we walked in the room it's she's inconsolable there are no words you hear me there there are no words there are no words but all of a sudden in a few moments of just inconsolable weeping we begin to hear sister penny let me keep and say i love you jesus i need you god i praise you god i need you god help me jesus aren't you thankful that god has given us the ability when tragedy comes our way and we don't have the words to say that we can begin to say i love you lord oh god i need you god you're you're gonna help me in this god you're gonna you're gonna see me through this does somebody want to just take a moment and do that right now lord i just love you god i i know you're going to help us god i i know you're going to be there lord i know you're going to see us through lord just a small matter it's the small words behold how great a matter a little fire kindleth and the tongue is a fl is a fire a world of iniquity so is the tongue among our members that it defileth the whole body and set it on fire the course of nature and is set on fire of hell he's talking about our nature he's talking about our nature verse 7 and every kind of beast and birds and serpents and to the things in the sea is tamed and have been tamed of mankind but the tongue can no man tame it is an un unruly evil full of deadly poison now when it says no man contained we don't need to leave it there and say okay we're hopeless with this thing called our tongue it said no man can tame our tongue but he didn't say god can't and this is one of the wonderful reasons that we need to examine tonight the simplicity i really believe a lot of times we get we we kind of get a little wayward on bible doctrine because we we lose out on the simplicity that's in this doesn't this start to make sense now why god would use the tongue as the outward sign that the holy ghost has taken up residence inside of us isn't it isn't it doesn't it start to make sense now why god shows the tongue the speaking in other tongues because man cannot tame the tongue but when we can connect our lives through the gospel through the gospel when we can connect our lives to god then god gives us the ability through the baptism of the holy ghost to control that most unruly member he said it's full of poison no man containment psalms chapter 140 and verse number three david speaking of his enemies said it this way they have sharpened their tongues like a serpent adder's poison is under their lips see law now that word see law means to pause and think when david considered his enemies when david started talking about his enemies he didn't talk about their swords he didn't talk about their number when david began to say i'll tell you what we got to look out for he didn't talk about all the daggers and spears and all the all the weaponry he talked about the words that their enemy would speak he talked about the words of the enemy and he said we need to be careful because the words of our enemy is like a serpent they are full a deadly poison think about it selah that's what that word sila means is to pause and think about it tonight i wonder if we could give some time just to think about we need to be oh so careful hearing words outside of the word of god we need to be oh so careful saying words in moments of anger we need to be so careful of saying words in moments of carnality we need to be so careful of of saying words that we haven't prayed over and sought god over and make sure that this is the holy ghost influencing me to say these words because words can have power the wrong words can poison someone and cause them to be defeated david said i'm not talking about their swords i'm not talking about their slingshots i'm talking about the words that the enemy is saying jesus addressed the pharisees in matthew chapter 12 and verse number 34 he addressed these pharisees that had the right they they they went to the temple they prayed twice daily they prayed twice in a week or fasted twice in a week they gave tithe of all that they they made i mean they they were doing all the wrong things are the right things but they have the wrong speech they have the wrong speech jesus in matthew 12 34 said old generation of vipers isn't it is it an interesting church that when he got ready to address the pharisees he likened them to vipers why because it wasn't what they were wearing that was wrong it wasn't that they were tithing that was wrong it wasn't that they were praying that was wrong it was what they were saying that was wrong what were they saying well here's one of their prayers they're praying in the temple there's a center man over here and they're praying in the temple and the pharisee says it like this oh god i thank you that i am not like the man over there i thank you that i don't do this and i don't do that i thank you god that i tithe i thank you god that i am so holy and i'm not like the man over there and that man over there heard those words and would not so much as lift up his eyes toward god but beat himself on the chest and said oh god be merciful unto me you see i never want to become a pharisee like that i want my words to help the lowest sinner that comes to this church to say well if god could save that preacher he could save me when you're praising god on your pew it ought to be with the intent that the lowest sinner or backslider that walks in would hear you praise god and say you know what if god can love them god can love me let's go to the altar let's let's i don't want to have anything of my words jesus said oh generation of vipers how can ye being evil speak good things for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh now follow me now we don't really have a tongue issue we have a heart issue we don't really have a tongue issue don't try to reform the tongue don't try to you know well mama said if i can't say something good don't say nothing at all that's you're trying to reform your tongue you will my fact you already said it and when you insinuated it all right you just didn't say it but you certainly did insinuate that there was something wrong so we don't have a we don't have a tongue problem we have a heart problem so now when the lord came and this is where we have to we have to focus in it's not our tongue that we need to focus on it's our heart fix the heart the tongue is fixed claim the heart the tongue is clean well let's go on let's go on through the here matthew excuse me mark chapter 16 simplicity just gonna be simple tonight matthew excuse me mark 16 verse 17 and these signs shall follow them that believe these signs shall follow them that believe in my name they shall cast out devils they shall speak with new tongues have you noticed the order there have you ever wondered why he didn't first say in my name they shall speak with new tongues and cast out devils have you ever noticed the order why didn't he say in my name thou shall speak with new tongues and then we'll turn around and cast out devils because the devils he's talking about are in our heart but the believer through embracing the gospel when the believer through faith in the gospel embraces the gospel he has power to clean that heart up when we come to god in repentance when we come to god in repentance for our sorry lives that we've lived our heart gets cleansed and we cast out devils and when the devils are cast out of our heart guess what we begin to do second we shall speak with new tongues i hope you see that tonight but he said don't lose out the simplicity don't just speed up to casting out devils and speed up to speaking with new tongues stop what makes it all possible these signs shall follow them that believe do you believe tonight these tongues shall follow these signs shall follow them that believe because it's a heart problem that god's got to work with it's not a tongue problem it's a heart problem romans chapter 5 and verse number 5 paul said it this way hope maketh not ashamed because the love of god is shed abroad in our what where's the love of god come hearts by the what the love of god is shed abroad in our hearts by the holy ghost which he has given us i thank god for my outward sign that i was filled with the holy ghost but you got to understand too he put love where there had been hate i said he put love where there had been hate you can't have a heart full of hate and a mouth full of tongues that's not god that may be your memory of speaking in tongues but that's not god you can't have hate here in tongues here it doesn't work that way a bit more than you can go to an apple tree and get a pear you can't go to a watermelon patch and get a cantaloupe and you can't get the right stuff here if you don't have the right stuff here god i want the right stuff right here god i want you to come when i get bitterness in my heart when i get bitterness when things come in my heart and i get bitterness you know what i want to do i want to i want to daily take out the trash you know in our houses in our homes we all have these small containers called trash cans and if you don't take out the trash especially the trash can in the kitchen things can get smelly after a while right right food line or food city i forget which it is and sometimes i'm a little bit careful of saying maybe some favorite things because you all are so kind to pastor and his family but they've got a little dish there of uh you know you can't really afford the real crab meat and the real lobster meat but that imitation stuff is pretty good you know if you kind of sit down and get some hot drawn butter and look at a red lobster commercial you can really think you're eating that you know you can really you know about 15 you can get a whole party tray of that imitation stuff yeah i don't know what's in it it's hard i don't ask no question paul said sit before you ask no question so i just i just but it's imitation right but i found out one thing you go to clean out the refrigerator and you put that in the trash can don't leave two or three days to go preach somewhere those things can kind of smell up the house a little bit isn't that the way it is with our lives sometimes if we don't daily take out the trash our lives begin to kind of stink a little bit our attitudes begin to stink a little bit we start getting critical of everything around us we get critical with our wife we get critical with our children we get critical with our pastor we get critical with the church and and nothing is going right in our lives and everybody around me is wrong and i wish they could just get perfect like i am i think i'll get off by myself the true matter is you just need to take out the trash it's amazing after a good prayer meeting and clearing yourself how you can look at people through different eyes and different visions amen so he's talking about the love of god is shed abroad in our hearts by the holy ghost the source of the tongue is the heart brother hammond the source of the tongue is the in ezekiel chapter 36 verse 26 listen to god hundreds of years before pentecost a new heart also will i give you and a new spirit will i put within you i will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and i will give you a heart of flesh back then god was saying i'm going to give you a new heart you've got a heart that can't be penetrated you've got a stony heart that doesn't care it's not compassionate it's selfish but the day is going to come i'm going to give you a heart that can be touched i'm going to give you a heart of flesh again in jeremiah 31 31 i want you to see this jeremiah 31 in the old testament pentecost is nothing new in the bible god was trying to tell us about pentecost in the book of ezekiel the book of jeremiah jeremiah 31 31 behold the days come saith the lord that i will make a new covenant with the house of israel and with the house of judah not according to the covenant that i made with their fathers in the day that i took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of egypt which my covenant they break although i was a husband unto them saith the lord here's what he said i'm going to make a new covenant with you i'm going to make a new contract thank god for the church i'm a man that's what he's talking about the church i'm going to make a new covenant with you and a new contract not like when i brought them out of egypt i had a contract with them i brought them by the hand out of egypt and i was faithful to them and he said i was a husband to them but they were not faithful to me 33. but this shall be the covenant that i will make with the house of israel after those days saith the lord i will put my law in their inward parts write it up write it in their hearts i will this new covenant if you can just see it this way the old covenant had to come here in the ears in the mind and then tried to obey it but the new covenant bypasses the mind it comes in the ear but it doesn't go to the mind it goes to where you believe it goes to the heart because even when you study the old testament prophets when they prophesied they would prophesy things that made no sense at all such is this a virgin shall conceive and bring forth a child she's not a virgin if she's conceived but that's why the writer said his word was in my mouth his word was in my mouth so the old testament covenant was the ear the mind had to figure it out and then try to obey it you do know that all of our actions just like my hands doing this right now guess where it originated at here all this even my speech is originating here but when it comes to the new contract and the new lifestyle it's not originating here it's originating here god's going to bypass my intellect he's going to bypass it it's going to make sense to me i'm going to embrace the gospel here's the simplicity i'm going to embrace the gospel the death burial and resurrection of jesus christ i'm going to embrace it based on faith and because i embrace it based on faith i believe it by faith i've never seen jesus christ i wasn't alive 2000 years ago and you weren't you were not either but i believe with all of my heart that god came to this earth robed himself in flesh lived some 33 years hung on a cross not for his sins for he knew no sin but he hung on the cross for the sins of all humanity and that's the greatest issue with man today it's not economic it's not government the greatest issue with man today was sin deal with sin and you've corrected the behavior of man and the only dealing with sin is through the cross simplicity is through the cross of jesus christ tonight and obeying the gospel i believe i believe i wish somebody would say it with me i believe i believe i believe i'll write it verse 33 in their inward parts i write it in their hearts and they and will be their god the end of verse 33 and they shall be my people and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor and every man his brother saying know the lord for they shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest of them you see in that day being educated and being able to be educated was solely for the wealthy it was the wealthy that could read it was the wealthy that had books it was the wealthy that was scribes but if you were poor you were uneducated they didn't deem you worth educating and so in the old testament it was mainly those that could be educated were of a certain class but god said when i give you pentecost when i begin to write my words in your heart it's not just going to be for one class of people on your servants on your handmaidens upon the young upon the old and then he said i will pour out my spirit upon how much upon isn't that beautiful do y'all see that tonight isn't that beautiful that that the simplicity of the spirit of god to tame my tongue he said they shall all know me unto the greatest of them from the least and the greatest said the lord for i will forgive their iniquity and will remember their sin no more look at deuteronomy chapter 30 and verse 6. what else did he say in the book of acts he said for the promise and help me with this now for the promise is unto you who who the promise is unto you and your children and to those that are far off it was the gentiles look at chapter 30 of deuteronomy verse 6 and the lord thy god will circumcise thine heart and the heart of thy seed to love the lord thy god with all thine heart and with all thy soul that thou mayest live he's still speaking about the day he's going to give you a new heart but i love how he says it says carpenter he says i'm going to circumcise your heart i'm going to cut away the sin out of your heart and i'm going to cast it away and there'll be a new heart there but he didn't stop because he was going to be connected to pentecost for the promise is unto you and your children what did he say here he said i will circumcise thine heart and the heart of thy seed in other words he's he's he's connecting it to pentecost i'm glad this evening that the holy ghost is this new heart this new language is just not for mom and dad it's for son and daughter and it's for grandchildren and it just keeps on going and keep the greatest thing you need to run in your family is the baptism of the holy ghost that's the greatest thing we need to keep going in our family is our children get the holy ghost and our grandchildren get the holy ghost we ought to celebrate it we it ought to be something grand that we celebrate my grandson's getting baptized my great-granddaughter is getting the holy ghost we ought to celebrate send them to youth camps get them prayed through because what changed your life is what's going to have to change their lives can you give him praise tonight in this house so god gave us the law he gave us the law romans chapter eight verse number two romans chapter eight verse number two god gave us the law for the law with the spirit of life in christ jesus had made me free from the law of sin and death verse 3 for what the law could not do look at that what the law could not do what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh god sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin condemned sin in the flesh now i want you to look at this do you realize god gave us the law knowing we couldn't fulfill it now just think about it god gave us something that he knew we couldn't obey well let's talk about the ten commandments would you raise your hand if you've always obeyed all the ten commandments if you raised your hand you just broke one of them well i might i might not obey all of them but i i obey most of them okay so you get a little joy about what you obey how about the guilt for the things you don't obey so this god gives us something we can't obey i mean folks it's right here he gave us the law knowing that we could not fulfill it so why god did you give us the law if you knew very well i couldn't live up to it he gave us the law to produce guilt and an awareness of sin for before the law we were sinning but we didn't know we were sinning because there was no law there was no law romans 7 7 bears this out he gave us the law knowing we couldn't keep the law so the law could produce in us so the law could produce in us guilt and the awareness of sin romans 7 7. what shall we say then is the law sin god forbid nay i had not known sin but by the law for i had not known lust except the law had said thou shalt not covet so he gives us something we can't obey for the purpose of producing guilt in us he wants us to have guilt about the way that we're living can i tell you guilty is not a bad thing as a matter of fact it's healthy to have guilt it is not healthy to be able to sin and not have guilt that's dangerous it's almost like the leper you know what the leper really dies from don't you he dies from self-inflicted injuries because leprosy takes the pain sensors away from him and a lepro lay his hand on a hot stove eye and not even know it's burning his hand because he has no pain sensor a a leper will cut himself and sometimes bleed to death because he has no pain sensors in his feet and so it is with sin thank god for guilt thank god that we do wrong there's a bell called our conscience that begins to ring god designed it that way god decided but not for us to live in guilt but for us to go to the only one that can take the guilt away it to go to the only one that can remove our guilt it's not good behavior it's not good works it's not giving enough money it's not singing in the choir it's not doing some work around the church it's going to be only one that can take away our sins and his name i think we ought to love him right now his name his name is jesus he gave us the ten commandments to produce enough shame and guilt but god not only gave us the ten commandments but god also gave us the tabernacle plan he not only gave us ten commandments we couldn't keep but he gave us a system of priests and sacrifices that we could make our way into his presence what a god you know he didn't just hang a sign over israel going through the wilderness obey the ten commandments you can't do it sorry you're out he made a tabernacle in the midst of them and he said if you'll follow the directions of sacrifices and priests and you'll do it exactly like i say you one man called a high priest can come into my presence once a year on the day of atonement and it will it won't it won't remit your sins but it'll keep pushing your sins up until the time that god's plan would be there look with me closely hebrews chapter 10 verse number one i'm and i'm watching the clock because i want to really get some subject down here hebrews chapter 10 verse number one listen to paul talk about the tabernacle hebrews 10 and 1 for the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers there unto perfect he said the law was a shadow but it could never perfect the worshipper hebrews 8 and 5 talking about the tabernacle who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things as moses was admonished of god when he was about to make the tabernacle for sea saith he that thou make all things according to the pattern shoot thee in the mouth so the tabernacle this is beautiful god not only gave you something you couldn't keep but he gave you a system that would speak of this beautiful new birth experience in the bible in the new testament as a matter of fact with the tabernacle there when a man sinned when a man sinned here's what would happen in leviticus chapter one verse number four when a man would sin leviticus 1 4 he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering and it shall be accepted for him to make an atonement for him now watch this please look at the example a man sinned if you were an israelite and you sinned you had to take an animal down to the tabernacle it spoke the animal many times spoke of your sin you took the animal down there you went up to the priest you laid your hand on the head of that animal as if you were transferring from your heart down your arm through your fingers all of your sins upon this animal because it would take a sacrifice to forgive your sin it was all ordained by god in the old testament type and shadow type and shadow you brought the animal you laid your hand on the head of that animal sin was the subject you laid your hand on that animal as if to transfer all your sin down your arm through your fingers to the animal not only that go to the leviticus chapter 16 verse number 10. god says but the goat on which the lot fell shall be the scapegoat you ever heard that term used today what does it mean that means somebody is taking something that they didn't commit i was a scapegoat i didn't do it but they put it on me can i tell you god didn't sin the man christ jesus didn't sin but he sure did become our scapegoat he sure did become our scapegoat let me let me continue leviticus chapter 16 earth 16 verse 10 but the goat on which the lot fell shall be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the lord to make an atonement with him and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness verse 20 go all the way down to verse 20. and when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place and the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar he shall bring the live goat aaron shall notice the imagery here please aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of israel and all their trust transgressions in all their sins putting them upon the head of the goat and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man that means a man that is qualified by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness and the goat shall bear upon him all the iniquities unto a land not inhabited and he shall let the goat he shall let go the goat in the wilderness do you see the beautiful typology here where did he say he would cast our sins in the sea never to be remembered again where are the sins taken of israel into the wilderness the scapegoat takes them into a land where not inhabited no one lives there beautiful analogy that's being made you see that the hand both hands transferring on the day of atonement all the sins upon the goat upon the lamb no wonder they understood this they understood this that day in john chapter 1 verse number 29 they understood this totally that day when it says in john 1 29 the next day jesus or john seeth jesus coming unto him john's baptizing and here comes jesus and john sayeth behold the lamb of god which does what taketh away the sin of the this is beautiful tonight isn't it church i know it's so simplistic but we can get so caught up on tongues and interpretation of tongues and the evidence of tongues that that we really get tripped up you'll never get to the tongues and the interpretation of tongues you'll never get to the gifts of the spirit until you first embrace the simplicity of believing upon jesus christ would you just give god some praise right now come on just give god some praise right now come on give god some praise lord i thank you god hallelujah now i want to issue a warning right now i want to issue a warning the warning is your faith must be in the word and not in the experience you're not going to pray listen tongues is not to prove that you believe tongues is the result of you believing but if you try oh i'm i i'm going to believe it when i start speaking in tongues when i speak in tongues i believe it no you've got to believe it before you start speaking in tongues you you've got to believe it before you get to that you have to believe that god's word is true if he promised you the holy ghost you've got it you've got to see in your mind i've got it now i just have to work on yielding myself but i'm not going to pray hard to speak in tongues because that produces frustration believe that he has this gift for you believe that his word is true read it in the bible look at it in the bible read it warning don't let your faith be an experience but let your faith be the word of god if you will obey god's financial plan you will be blessed but stop waiting to be blessed to obey god's financial plan it doesn't work that way if you'll obey it you will be blessed there's listen there there's there's my grandma used to say granny waddell used to say 40 1100 devils can't do it 40 however how many devils that he is 40 1100 devils can't do it if you follow god's plan god's word it's going to happen why god said it but you have to believe it john chapter 7 verse number 37. i want i want to refer to this as follow the steps of john 7. john 7 37 in the last day that great day of the feast jesus stood and cried saying if any man thirst thirst let him come unto me and drink he that believeth on me as the scripture has said out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water but this spake he of the spirit that they that believe on him should receive for the holy ghost was not yet given because jesus was not yet glorified let me give you three simple steps number one is thirst you have to be thirsty you want the spirit of god you want the spirit of god to control your language you want the spirit of god to control your heart you have to be thirsty you have to be hungry not an appetite you have to be thirsty you have to be thirsty for god the bible said blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled god help us not to be content with a memory of what god has done for us god help us as believers not to be content that i did get baptized 40 years ago i did get the holy ghost 40 years ago god helped me to be just as hungry tonight as i was years ago to have your spirit that's what it takes to keep going but thirst alone hunger thirst alone is not enough the second thing is scriptural belief is required you can't believe upon jesus christ just in your way you have to believe on him according to the scripture you can't pick and choose the bible said he that believeth on me as the scripture has said you have to go to the scripture thirst plus scriptural belief equals a spiritual experience look at that thirst i'm hungry sit down and read about the holy ghost and how god has promised it to all being and when you receive the gift of the holy ghost you'll speak in other tongues as the spirit gives the utterance be thirsty for it look in the word of god see it's there and then just begin to praise god on his promises and the spiritual experience will happen won't it church it will it will take place now let me bring this home to us tonight lest we have forgotten the bible tells us that without question all men have sinned all men have sinned proverbs 20 and verse 9 who can say i have made my heart clean i am pure from my sin who can say that no one can say that isaiah 53 and verse 6 all we like sheep have gone astray we have turned every one to his own way isaiah 64 6 but we are all as an unclean thing and all our righteousness are as filthy rags the best you can do is like a filthy rag romans 3 23 for all have sinned and come short of the glory of god first john 1 8 if we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us let's understand something tonight we all were sinners we all had the death sentence passed upon us so what okay let me tell you so what sin separates you from god sin separates you from god if you're sinning tonight you are separated from god if you're sinning you are separated from god i don't care if you wear the carpet out come into this church you're separated i don't care if you give 10 20 50 all percent you're separated it doesn't matter sin separates you from god that ought to be that's not i'm not making that statement to discourage you i hope i'm making it to encourage you to stop sinning psalm 66 18. psalm 66 18. if i regard iniquity in my heart the lord will not hear me so if i have sin in my heart and i'm i'm not doing anything about it you can yell to the top of your voice god's not going to hear you you pray an hour a day two hours a day three hours a day whatever you want to pray god doesn't hear you isaiah 59 and 2. and again i'm not saying this to discourage you i hope i will encourage you to repent isaiah 59 and 2. but your iniquities have separated between you and your god and your sins have hid his face from you that he will not hear isaiah 64 7 and there is none that calleth upon thy name that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee for thou has hid thy face from us and has consumed us because of our iniquities isaiah 5 and 6 they shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the lord but they shall not find him he hath withdrawn himself from them now not only have we all sinned and not only does sin separate us from god on this earth but unless we deal with sin it will eternally separate us from god it will eternally separate us from god born once die twice born once you'll die twice you'll die physical death and then you will die an eternal death in hell because of your sins because of your sins sin brings about eternal death this means eternal separation of the sinner from god a casting into the lake of fire which is called the second death i don't want to live the second death that's why i want to be born twice i want to be born again i want to be born again so that i do not suffer the second death but that i live that i live with having that's why he said eternal life i came that you might have a life i came that you might have eternal life proverbs 11 19 as righteousness tendeth to life so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death ezekiel 18 4 the soul that sinneth it shall die you know i know i'm not having to seat you a lot tonight and and i know i i know this is not something that is deep revelatory and and about the antichrist and all of this stuff or it's it's how to how to move in the miraculous but folks if we don't understand this if we don't understand this it doesn't matter we're we're done before we even we're done before we even get started the tabernacle had laws regarding those who entered the presence of god not just anybody could enter the presence of god is exodus chapter 30 and verse 19 for aaron and his son shall wash their hands and their feet thereat when they go into the tabernacle of the congregation they shall wash with water that they die not or when they come near to the altar to minister to burn offerings made by fire unto the lord they shall wash their hands and their feet that they die not it shall be a statue forever to them even to him and to his seed throughout the generation you just didn't go brother mayo you just didn't hate let's go down to the temple and go back in the holy place and let's go back to the holy of holies and see the present you didn't do that as a matter of fact the men that could go back were told of order on how to go back they just couldn't go in there they had to stop at the labor and wash their hands and feet well what if they didn't god i told you what would happen he said they would die so there had to be order there had to be order in coming into the tabernacle there had to be order in coming into this tabernacle you just couldn't come into the tabernacle and enjoy the presence of god any other way there had to be order and neither can you and i have new testament salvation without the order of jesus christ the tabernacle represented jesus christ jesus christ is the only way to enter into the presence of god oh i love him oh i praise him i am a pentecostal i do speak with other tongues but i do speak and have the pentecostal experience because i believe in a hill called calvary i believe in a an all-rugged cross i believe in an order i believe in a way to go in can you give him praise tonight can you give him praise romans 10 1-10 i'm going to try to rush i really want to get this i really want you to see this roman excuse me john 10 john 10 verse number 1. listen to jesus verily verily i say unto you he that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold but come climbeth up some other way the same is a thief and a robber but he that entereth in by the door everybody say the door he that entereth them by the door is the shepherd of the sheep to him the porter openeth and the sheep hear his voice he calleth his own sheep by name and leadeth them out and when he putteth forth his own sheep he go up before them and the sheep follow him for they know his voice a stranger will they not follow but will flee from him for they know not the voice of strangers this parable spake jesus unto them but they understood not what things that they things they were which he spake unto them then said jesus unto them again verily verily i say unto you i am the door of the sheep all that ever came before me are thieves and robbers but the sheep did not hear them i am the door by me if any man enter in he shall be saved and shall go in and out and find pasture the thief cometh not but to steal kill and destroy but i have come that they may have life and that they might have life more abundantly do you understand tonight john 6 44 no man cometh unto me except the father which has sent me draw him and i will raise him at the last day john 6 john 6 65 and he said therefore i said unto you that no man can come unto me accept it we're given unto him of my father john 14 6 jesus saith unto him i am the way the truth and the life no man cometh unto the father but by me do we understand that the only way to get our sins dealt with is not to work ourselves up in some kind of spiritual fervor to where we speak in tongues but we've got to come to jesus christ we have got to come to him jesus is the bearer of our sins jesus is the one that took our place jesus is the scapegoat jesus is the lamb he who knew no sin became sin and i know tonight some of you may be thinking well you're confusing me but i hope i'm not i'm hoping i can bring i'm hoping that i can bring clearing to your conscience because you can't shout enough to get guilt out of you the only way you can get the joy of the lord and the guilt lifted is to believe that he forgives you and that he's the only way he's the only door now i won't tell you the address i won't tell you the address because it's uh we're online but where my sister and brother-in-law live that was our old home place that was our old home place all right and let's say that i'm driving uh brother burkett let's say i'm driving back in town and i'm coming through knoxville it's three o'clock in the morning and uh i get a little thirsty and i i think to myself well you know i'm just going to slide on by kip and kathy's house and i'm just go i know where the refrigerator's at it's is it still where it's always been ain't telling okay so i get there to the house i pull up and uh i decided to i see a window a jar back there and i think you know what i don't want to bother kept and captain get them up so i'm just gonna go get me a ladder and put it against the house and screw me up the rat ladder and go through the window get in the kitchen give me something to drink well i put the ladder on the side of the house about that time old brother kip brother-in-law he hears the ladder rattling on the house and so about the time i get up and poke my head in the door kip fills me with buckshot well he's your brother-in-law no if i want an entrance into kip's house i need to go the right way you hear me y'all know where i'm going if i want to get in god's house if i want to live in that place called heaven if i want to be in the body of cross i can't where i can't go get my ladder and come my own way because that's the way thieves and robbers go in i got to come through the front door i got to come through the front door i got i got a ring the door brother jeter isn't this good tonight i gotta come through the front door you may be seated i don't think i'm alone here day or night my doorbell rings what do i do oh i just sling a door wide open no i don't i don't care if it's high noon or high midnight somebody ring my doorbell i go to that door that's some blinds brother nickels i go why you do that because i'm going to determine by who i see if i'm going to open that door i don't know i don't recognize him i ain't open the door what do you want but i hope matt blind and there's his little grandbabies get on in here what are you doing come on in here don't you know that when our hearts are repented when our hearts are saying jesus i gotta have you and we come up here and we begin to stand at the door and we begin to ring the doorbell with our hands jesus god i need you don't you know the bible said if any man will come unto me i will in no wise cast him out he opens that door and he says come on in i'll love you i died for you i'll forgive you i'll fill you with my spirit when you're baptized i'll remit all your sins and i'll fill you with my spirit because i have received you isn't that simplistically profound i will receive you but you got to come the right way see he knows if i got anything in my heart i can't play with him i can play with people but i can't play with god i can play with people but think about this and i'm closing what jesus did for us at calvary he paid for sins he paid for sins but he never committed sins now follow this now he paid for sins but he never committed sins he paid for it but he never committed it so his death sister carpenter created a surplus in heaven a surplus you ever paid you ever paid a bill twice and they send you uh uh and and they say your accounts got a credit your account's got a credit that's because there's surplus there there's a surplus you paid more you paid more than what was owed he paid for sins he never committed and he created an inexhaustible never can train amount of forgiveness of sins and ever you you can't drain it you can't drink uh lord help me help me right now because if we have faith in an experience we will be some of the most frustrated people but if we can have faith in the gospel and we've almost gotten away from this phrase two places it's used in the bible and don't ever say this don't i heard somebody say this one time and i said don't ever say that to somebody well somebody told me just believe they upon the lord jesus christ thou shalt be saved and i said we didn't believe that i said we do believe that it's mentioned twice in the bible and it is bible but you got to study who it was spoken to it was spoken to people that didn't know god a jailer a philippian jailer that all he knew was the earthquake it hit the prison and everybody was wandering around and he was probably going to lose his life and he cries out in desperation the romans are going to kill him because possibly a prisoner's free and he cries out and says what must i do to be saved and paul said believe thou upon the lord jesus christ and thou shalt be saved not are saved shalt be saved he said it again to the ethiopian eunuch as he preached unto him jesus and the ethiopian eunuch said he see here's water what would hinder me from being baptized and philip said if you believe that if you believe with all your heart you may have he said i believe that jesus christ is the son of god they stopped the chair at the baptism because belief has to go before experience on the day of pentecost why didn't peter say acts 2 37 men and brethren what shall we do why didn't peter say believe that upon the lord jesus christ why didn't he say it because they already believed on him they just heard a message about the death burial and resurrection of jesus christ and they said men and brethren what shall we do they already believed you don't ask what shall we do unless you believe you need to do something already believed and so peter said all right let me take you to the next step you need to repent of your sins and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the remission of your sins just like putting your hand on that animal all the sins coming down all the sins going up when we come to the altar and repent it's the same as old testament laying our hands upon that sacrifice jesus i'm sorry jesus i've sinned before you jesus i was an offense to you but jesus begins to say yes but i have an inexhaustible amount of surplus of grace and i'll love you freely and i will forgive those that have repented oh how blessed would you stand with me tonight how blessed we are tonight how blessed we are tonight how blessed we are come on could we take just a couple moments and thank him right now for his goodness come on thank him right now thank him for his goodness what can wash away my sins nothing but his blood what can make me whole again nothing but his blood oh god from heaven lord god i pray over my own life right now god if you see anything in my heart that ought not be god if i've said anything done anything thought anything god how i miss the mark daily with you god lord how i miss the mark god lord i want to walk in the light as you are in liveth i know that my redeemer live how in the world can a man who just dug ten fresh graves a man that just looked out over his bank account and he's bankrupt now he's lost all of his health he's covered with boils from the top of his head to the soles of his feet he's swollen but how can a man in the midst of ten fresh graves he's dug for his kids his fields are smoltering his friends are accusing he said but i know my redeemer liveth and he shall stand upon the earth in the end and though the skinned worms eat my body yet in my flesh shall i see god there shall be there shall be a resurrection could you just do that right now one more time whatever you're going through could you just declare victory lord i've got the victory lord i've got the victory god i've got the victory
