Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The foundation: Isaiah's stammering lips and another tongue

  • Tonight's study in the 'Why We Believe What We Believe' series takes up the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues; the head text is read entire: 'Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept... For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people... This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.'
  • The chapter's setting: God's people filled with pride, then drunkenness — even the priest and false prophets erring out of the way — and God's answer is not only to point out the error but to teach his way back: knowledge and doctrine, given the way children are taught, a little at a time, line upon line like a bricklayer's line.
  • Some scriptures are milk — 'believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved', 'for God so loved the world' — true, but a believer cannot live on them for years; God wants his people drawn from the breast to doctrine, because he wants to put his Spirit inside of them.
  • Against the reading that the stammering lips mean a foreign army raised to chastise: a chastisement is never called rest — God calls this speaking the rest and the refreshing, and New Testament doctrine is many times founded on Old Testament scripture.

Scriptures: Isaiah 28:9-12

Paul settles it: tongues in the law, tongues in the church

  • Corinth's disease was self-centeredness — 'ingrown eyeball-itis', seeing only themselves — and their tongues were abused in the services; yet Paul's correction is not less tongues but more understanding: 'I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding... than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. Brethren, be not children in understanding... but in understanding be men.'
  • Paul himself reaches back to Isaiah: 'In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord' — Paul would not have used the verse if Isaiah meant a foreign army coming to whip them.
  • Jesus' last words in Mark are read: 'Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues' — the believer would speak with new tongues.

Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 14:18-20; 1 Corinthians 14:21; Mark 16:15-17

The fulfillment: Pentecost — and eight years later, the Gentiles

  • Acts 2 is read: on the day of Pentecost they were all with one accord in one place; suddenly a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind; cloven tongues like as of fire sat upon each of them; 'and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.'
  • The fire was the inauguration — as fire and shaking attended the giving of the law to Moses without the law losing power when later read without fire, so Pentecost was inaugurated with visible tongues of fire, and the outpouring itself did not stop there.
  • Eight years later at Cornelius's house, while Peter yet spake, 'the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word' — and the Jews were astonished because on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost; how did they know? 'For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.' Peter then commands them to be baptized in the name of the Lord, having received the Holy Ghost as well as we.
  • And Peter's Pentecost answer stands behind it all — the question 'Men and brethren, what shall we do?' and the answer: 'Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.'
  • His own testimony rides here: filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost as a boy, he credits it — not personality or toughness — for the strength to walk past his father's casket at seventeen, and for getting him back up through every trial since.

Scriptures: Acts 2:1-4; Acts 10:44-48; Acts 2:37; Acts 2:38

Peter rehearses it — and Paul asks the question at Ephesus

  • Acts 11 is read: the circumcision contends with Peter for eating with uncircumcised men, and Peter rehearses the matter by order — the sheet let down from heaven, 'What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common', the three men sent from Cornelius, and the angel's promise of words 'whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.'
  • 'And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost... For as much then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?' — and the contention ends: 'Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.'
  • The defense is drawn tight: believing on the Lord Jesus Christ and receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost are two separate, distinct experiences — believing is what you do; giving you the Holy Ghost is what he does.
  • At Ephesus Paul finds certain disciples and asks, 'Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?' — an absurd question if believing and receiving were the same thing. They had not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost; baptized only unto John's baptism, they are then baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, Paul lays his hands on them, 'the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied' — about twelve men.

Scriptures: Acts 11:1-18; Acts 19:1-7

Samaria: power and gift — and Simon's money

  • Acts 8 is read at length to close: Philip preaches Christ in Samaria with miracles and great joy; Simon — who had bewitched the people with sorceries (the Greek word carries the sense of mixing drugs) — himself believes and is baptized.
  • The apostles at Jerusalem send Peter and John, 'who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.'
  • Tongues are not named in this passage — but two words are: POWER and GIFT. Simon saw something when hands were laid on them, and offered money for it: 'Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.' Nobody offers money for a ritual.
  • Peter's rebuke stands: 'Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money' — and the lesson closes where it began: since Pentecost established it, everyone who receives the baptism of the Holy Ghost receives the initial evidence, speaking in another tongue; the dismissal sends the church out thankful for the Comforter, here a little and there a little.

thank God you have your Bibles and would be so kind to stand with me tonight the book of Isaiah the book of Isaiah chapter 28 and we'll begin reading at verse number 12 Isaiah chapter 28 verse number 12 I sincerely say to everyone that's here tonight thank you so so much for coming to the house of the Lord tonight for midweek Bible study tonight we're going to continue our study on why we believe what we believe the subject matter will be the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues Isaiah chapter 28 and verse number 12 the prophet says to whom will he excuse me verse number 28 and verse number N I got I'm reading my last verse of there's 28 verse 9 starts with whom but it's that's the whom of verse 12 and I need the whom of verse 9 Isaiah 28 and9 Whom Shall he teach knowledge and Whom Shall he make to understand Doctrine them that are winged from the milk drawn from the breast for precept must be upon precept precept upon precept line upon line line upon line hear a little and there a little for with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people to whom whom he said this is the rest wherewith you may cause the weary to rest and this is the refreshing yet they would not hear precious God tonight we thank you for your word God your word that directs us and your word God that so comforted me tonight when it said I will not leave you comfortless I will come and give you another comforter Lord for the next few moments God would you touch our minds and our hearts and equip us that we may be able to realize what we have in the baptism of the Holy Ghost and Lord not only what we have but what we so desperately need to share God if you'll anoint me I'll give you praise for I'm nothing without your anointing in Jesus name we all pray amen and amen you may be seated tonight the Old Testament Prophet if you had time to read the entirety of the 28th chapter of Isaiah you would find that uh the people of God had gotten filled with pride they had gotten filled with pride their PR Pride had led them in to drunkenness the 28th chapter of Isaiah speaks about God's people yes God's people Israel filled with pride and then they became literal drunkards they became drunk on Wine Not only did they become drunk on wine but the Bible says that their drunkenness caused them to air out of the way it caused them to leave their Godly Pathways and it caused them to leave The Godly judgments and principles and not only that but it even says in the 28th chapter that even the priest became intoxicated and it says that the priest even aired and it goes on and says that even false prophets rose up and they were drunkards and they uh they also aired and gave false judgments and and then one of the verses here I believe it's verse number eight it describes um the what happens when people become intoxicated filled with food and intoxicated and the writer just says that they had regurgitated on the tables that they were eating they were drunk and they had regurgitated there and uh he stops there and he says there there's just no clean place there's just no clean place but you know what I love about God he is not just one to point out where we air he is a god that is always trying to show us how to get back and so he begins this little journey in verse n he says who will he teach knowledge he said I I I've got to start teaching some knowledge and and then he said who can I make to understand Doctrine I the only thing that's going to correct pride and correct drunkenness and correct the way that people are living I I I I I I've got to find somebody that I can I can teach some knowledge to and I got to find somebody that I can have them long enough to get some Doctrine on the inside of them and then he answers it in verse nine and he says well those that have understanding and those that understand Doctrine they are those that are winged from the milk and drawn from the breast in other words now he's starting to he's starting to say you are you are like children that little children that don't know any better you you you're like little children that have been left to themselves and and you don't know any better and you've been on the Milk of here oh Israel the Lord our God is one and you you've been on the breast of the scriptures of of just the you know hereo Israel the Lord our God is one but he said if I could find someone that would be willing to be drawn from the breast of that Elementary doctrine of just one God if I could just find someone that that could be drawn from the breast of a a a child everybody say a child then he goes into verse 10 he says for precept must be upon precept and precept upon precept and line upon line and line upon line and here a little and there a little now now he's not repeating himself to repeat himself he's talking about how you educate little children how you educate your little children is you just give them a little bit of knowledge a day a little bit of knowledge tomorrow a little bit of knowledge you ever you ever had your children get in the car after school or your grandchildren and you say to them what'd you learn today nothing nothing oh come on you know you learned something uh nothing well to that little child it's nothing but that teacher that day taught him that 1 + 1 equals 2 because when you're teaching little children you can't give them all of it at once their minds won't comprehend so the writer said it would be precept upon precept a little lesson here and a little lesson there and then he said line upon line and this has the imagery of laying block laying block a block layer will stretch a line morning brother John Stone from one corner of the building to the next he'll stretch a straight line and he lays that brick right at the edge of that line and when he gets that whole roll of brick done guess what he does he goes over here and picks it up again and goes up another layer so line upon line precept upon precept here a little there a little and then he turns the corner in verse 11 for with st hammering lips and another tongue will he speak to his people and this is the rest and this is the refreshing now he's saying I got to give it to you little by little I got to I got to get you drawn from the breast I got to get you winged off the milk now I I I got to I got to I got to get you drawn from that from that milk of a child believe thou upon the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved is that scripture you better believe it but it's milk it's milk the scripture for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son is that scripture you better believe it is but it's milk you can't serve God years and years and just keep on quoting believe thou upon the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved or for God so loved the world he says I want to draw you away from that not forsaking it but I just want to feed you something else I want to give you a precept upon precept and a line upon a line because why because I want to put my spirit inside of you and he begins to explain it for with stammering lips stammering lips and another tongue will he God speak to this people and then he calls it rest and he calls it refreshing now not only is the pull pit called to proclaim the word of God but we are also called to defend the word of God Paul said I am set for the defense of the Gospel so I find myself tonight not only needing to teach this to lay the foundation but to also defend how some have taken this scripture here and they have said that what this stammering lips in another tongue means that God was going to raise up a foreign enemy that spoke a foreign language and God was going to allow this Army to come in and was going to was going to teach them him a lesson well when we begin to take the scripture apart uh if God is going to chastise us why does he call it rest my mom and dad chastised me but uh and and when I say chastise they gave me a whooping all right but they used words like correct you but not one one time did my dad say we're going downstairs you're going to get some rest right that's not what that scripture means and I can show you because New Testament Doctrine many times the foundation of New Testament Doctrine is found in Old Testament scripture turn with me to the 1 Corinthians chapter 14 1 Corinthians chapter 14 and I believe that we want to start reading at verse number let's try to get it right this time 1 Corinthians 14 verse number 18 somebody say praise the Lord prise the Lord somebody say it above a whisper prise the Lord so we got to make up for them folks that ain't here tonight Paul is First Corinthians Paul is talking about the abuse of speaking in tongues and it was was being abused in the Corinthian Church it was being abused and what I mean by that by the abuse is speaking in other tongues worshiping God and speaking in other tongues edifies edifies the person speaking it's a glorious thing it's a joyous thing it's a wonderful thing but they got so caught up remember this is the same church this is the same church are you are you still with me tonight these are the same people that I allowed the Lord's Supper Bread and Wine to morph into to a Sunday go to EA and meet and on the grounds all right but it even morphed into something worse than that if you had a lot of money and you had a lot of food your family got to eat a lot but if you were poor and you came in you made sure that you set up the chairs just right to keep the poor folks on the outside cuz you didn't want them to eat your food these are the same people that that that allow the Lord's Supper to morph into that so they were that Corinthian Church was a very self-centered church it was a very it was a uh um it it had a disease uh it had a it had a disease the Corinthian Church had a disease and uh let me see you you know medical names uh I can't hardly pronounce medical names you the doctor tell you you got something and you try to tell your neighbors what you got you just butcher the Daylights out of it you know and um Corinthian Church had a a a disease I diagnosed them and um it was called in grus eyeball itis it's kin to an ingrown toenail anybody ever had an ingrown toenail yeah they don't feel good does it they had ingrown eyeballs they could only see themselves they couldn't see they couldn't see anything they couldn't see anybody else they couldn't see anybody couldn't see anybody else's need church was all about them it was all they they were in gronis eyeball itis all right and uh so when the Corinthian Church opened up brother Lawless the man got up there to open up the service and he start speaking in tongues and the singer stepped out to get his guitar and he got ready to sing and he started speaking in tongues and the preacher got up to get ready to preach and he started speaking and son and Paul came along and he said I got to correct this he said if people come in that are unlearned and unbelievers will they not say you're mad and this is where Paul and and and I'll get to that in a minute but this is where Paul had to say I would rather speak five words with my understanding in the church the 10,000 words in an unknown tongue that I may teach other so it's in the midst of this 1 Corinthians 14 1 Corinthians Chapter 14 verse number 18 it's in the it's in the midst it's in the midst of this he says I thank my God I thank my God I speak in tongues more than you all so he says now I'm going to set the record right I thank my God I speak in tongues more than y'all yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding that by my voice I might teach others also than 10,000 words in an unknown tongue Brethren be not children in understanding how be it in Malice be ye children but in understanding be men now what's he trying to say grow up right he's trying to tell you to grow up it's not all about you he says he says in understand in understand I need you to understand this I need you to understand this with me for a moment he says that in Malice in Malice be children how has children malice little kids playing on the playground out here at the daycare they'll getting some fusses and fights and won't play with each other but it don't last long about an hour later they got their arms R each other they're best buddies once again they're easily children they're easily to forgive buddy you let some of us adults have something happen decades later we're still trying to set over here so we don't have to go over there Brethren be not children I'm trying to get you to understand this Paul says be not children in understanding how be it in Malice be ye children but in understanding be men what is the subject here the abuse of speaking with tongues look at the next scripture and see if it doesn't sound familiar in the law it is written with men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people yet yet for all that will that for all that will they not hear me sath the Lord Paul would not have used that verse of scripture out of Isaiah if Isaiah was using it to say that God would raise up a foreign army to come that spoke a foreign language to whip them and Destroy them Paul wouldn't use that scripture he uses the scripture in its proper context he said well even in the law it says that God would speak to the people through other tongues with other lips will he speak now turn with me if you would to the Book of Mark chapter 15 or excuse me chapter 16 The Book of Mark chapter 16 and verse number 15 this the last words of Jesus recorded by Mark he said unto to them and go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to Every Creature he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved but he that believeth not shall be damned and these signs and these signs shall follow shall follow them that believe in my name they shall cast out devils they shall speak with new tongues Jesus said it he said the believer would speak in new tongues Isaiah said that if you could get drawn from the breast and Wing from the milk and could get some teaching from the word of God precept upon precept and line upon line and hear a little and there a little he said with stammering lips and another tongue God would speak to the people and this would be the rest and the refreshing I think it'd be a good time right now just to pause and say God I thank you for the baptism of the Holy Ghost God I thank you for the baptism of the Holy Ghost I thank you tonight I I want to tell you I I I want to thank God tonight when when when when Rhonda came to the altar when sister Ronda came to the Altar and we had a time of prayer and she got up did you all feel what I felt when she stood to her feet you know what we all felt we all felt the wonderful presence of the comforter that just walked in the midst of the people that were standing there oh I'm telling you tonight I don't know how things end I'm not God Only God knows that but I know one thing he gives us another comforter he gives he gives us another comforter that just comes and walks with us and with Jesus everything is going to be all right look at Rhonda with her hands lifted right now with Jesus it's going to be all right people that know God we don't deny fact we don't deny we don't deny things but what we do know is above all the other reports there's a God that says I am your comforter I am your comforter H Jesus himself said that the signs would follow them that believe in my name they would speak with new tongues turn with me now to the book of Acts chapter 2 Acts chapter 2 we see the Fulfillment of this coming in Acts chapter 2 and verse number one I'm going to tell you something Acts chapter 2 and verse number one I want to be a pastor to you tonight you can let life paralyze you with bitterness and if you don't let the Holy Ghost help you bitterness only hurts the container that it's in bitterness is like acid you can hold on to acid but acid only hurts the container that it's in and I want you to know something tonight only the Holy Ghost can help us get through things but the Holy Ghost is a perfect gentleman if I may use that terminology the Holy Ghost one lady said one lady said I'm not going to come to your church you all believe in speaking in tongues I said why don't you come on you don't have a thing to worry about you don't have one thing to worry about come on down here you don't have one thing well I'm not going to go there y'all speak in tongues well you you will never speak in tongues if you don't want it he is not a gang Buster if you don't want the Holy Ghost he is not going to pry his way into your life he's not going to pry your jaw open he's not going to slap you under the bottom of your lip and try to shake he's not going to do it if you don't want it you'll do without it but if I could ever convince you through the word here a little there a little line upon line precept upon precept if I could ever spoon feed you enough to get you out off of the breast if I could ever get you hungry for God and gets you panting for God saying God I've got to have you God I I can't do life without you God I I can't do it I'm telling you the holy ghost boom I'll give you the holy ghost man I'll come down in your life and I'll give you the baptism of the Holy Ghost oh give him some praise right now verse two a Acts chapter 2 verse number one somebody say praise the Lord if you're thankful you got the Holy Ghost say thank you Jesus come on say it like you mean it if you're thankful thank you Jesus I I'm thankful for the Holy Ghost tonight and when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all with one Accord in one place suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing Mighty Wind filled all the house where they were sitting there appeared unto them clothing tongues they appeared unto them clothing tongues like as a fire and it set upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance or gave them the ability again as a defender of the truth you'll hear people say those Apostolic Pentecostal people brag and boast and they'll say we get the Holy Ghost just like they did in the Bible I would like to ask them where are the tongues of fire in their church service well it's simple it's simple fire has always been used in scripture as the approval of God the inauguration when God instituted the law on Mount Si when God gave Moses the law of The Commandments on Mount si si shook an earthquake and fire and the cloud was there there was fire on top of that mountain and God gave Moses the law but every time the law was red there wasn't fire and there wasn't clouds there it didn't mean the law was any less powerful it was that God gave the inauguration of the law he said this is a new day I'm instituting the new law I'm instituting the law here it is and I'll back it up the inauguration with fire and the earthquake but from that time of the reading of the law there was no more fire that didn't mean the law wasn't powerful so on the day of Pentecost when there appeared unto them there appeared unto them clothing tongues like as a fire fire shaped clothing tongues appeared in the room and it came over and it set upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave them the utterance so they will say you all don't get the Holy Ghost like that that doesn't happen anymore and they're exactly right because just like the law in the Old Testament Pentecost was inaugurated with visible Tong like fires that were over them but that doesn't mean that the Holy Ghost had stopped being poured out because we find it again we find it again eight years later in Acts chapter 10 in Acts chap 10 and verse number 44 through 48 a hungry Gentile by the name of Cornelius calls for Simon Peter Peter goes down in Acts chap 10 verse 44 while Peter yet spake these words the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word they the circumcision that's the Jews which believed were astonished as many as came with Peter because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost now let me stop there for a moment what was poured out on them the what what is it the gift of what now I want to go back I want you to hold your spot there in Acts 10 well you just stay there let me go to acts 238 because after Peter got through preaching on the day of Pentecost they asked in Acts 237 men and Brethren what shall we do and verse 38 then Peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost now I'm preaching this tonight because we need to know that what we what happened 2,000 years ago is still happening tonight I want my children to know about it I want my grandchildren to know about it because the baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost was the greatest thing that ever happened to me the baptism of the Holy Ghost not only do I want my family to know about it it's God's will that every man woman boy and girl in Maryville Tennessee in blun County Tennessee receive the gift of the Holy Ghost the Holy Ghost baptism is the great cure all for whatever man has got wrong with him they need the baptism of the Holy Ghost folks it's the greatest thing that's ever happened in my my life I have had Trials come to my life shortly after shortly after I received the Holy Ghost my father died and I credit the baptism of the Holy Ghost for giving me strength to walk as a 17year old boy past the casket of my dad I credit the baptism of the Holy Ghost it had nothing to do with my personality it had nothing to do that I was some tough little boy it had everything to do that I was was filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost I have had trials hit me and knocked me on my back what got me back up you're a tenacious young man I'm not a ten tenacious young man I've just been filled with Heaven's Sweet Holy Ghost I've been hurt I've been stabbed I've been talked about I've been lied on watch watch you from being bitter I've got the baptism of the Holy Ghost that's what's got me where I'm at today is the baptism Oh My My My I'm excited everybody needs the Holy Ghost everybody people that are depressed need the Holy Ghost people that are on drugs need the Holy Ghost people that ain't on drugs need the Holy Ghost people that are bored with life need the Holy Ghost need the Holy Ghost people are having problems need the Holy Ghost how they know they had it eight years later Acts 2 acts 10 and 45 it's poured on them the gift of the Holy Ghost verse 46 how they know they got it for they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God then Peter answered can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized which have received the Holy Ghost yall are y'all looking at that which have received the Holy Ghost say those last four words who have received the Holy Ghost again I have to come tonight in defense of the gospel because there's those that say the Holy Ghost was only poured out on the day of Pentecost and it's not for anybody else today here in Acts 10 is eight years later and Peter hears them talking in tongues and Peter says can any of us forbid that they should not be baptized which have received a different Spirit than what we got who have received the Holy Ghost where is it who have received the Holy Ghost what is it as well as we and he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord and prayed he they him to carry certain days just flip on over to chapter 11 it's the next verse and the apostle Apostles and Brethren that were in Judea heard that the that the Gentiles also had received the word of God and when Peter was come up to Jerusalem they that were of the circumcision contended with him they were upset with him verse two they were upset with him saying thou Wiest into men uncircumcised and did eat with them but Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning and expounded it by order unto them saying I was in the city of japa praying and in a trance I saw a vision a certain vessel descend as it had been a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners and it came even to me upon which when I had fastened my eyes I considered and saw four-footed beast of the earth and wild beast and creeping things and foul of the air fouls of the air I Heard a Voice saying unto me arise Peter slay and eat but I said not so Lord For Nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth but the voice answered me again from Heaven what God hath cleansed that call not thou Comon and this was done three times and all were drawn up again into to heaven and behold immediately there were three men already come under the house where I was sent from Cornelius unto me and the spirit bade me go with them nothing doubting moreover these six Brethren accompanied me and we entered into the man's house he showed us how he had seen an angel now watch listen to the words it's really important you listen to the words here he showed us how had seen an angel in his house which stood and said unto him send men to japa call for Simon whose surname is Peter who shall tell thee words whereby thou and all thy house shall be what saved verse 15 and as I begin to speak the Holy Ghost fell on them as on us look at that underline it in your Bible as on us at the what beginning don't tell me the Holy Ghost was poured out only once here's eight years later Peter said Gentile and don't tell me that only the Jews got the Holy Ghost these are Gentiles he said on us at the beginning then remembered I the word of the Lord how that he said John indeed baptized with water but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost for as much look at verse 17 for as much then as God gave them the like here he goes the like what GI as he did unto who who believed on the Jesus Christ what was I that I should withstand God who did he give the Holy Ghost to those who did what believed on the Lord Jesus Christ now once again as defense of the Gospel there is an erroneous doctrine that is preached in many thousands millions of people swallow it hookline and sinker and that is when you believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ and trust him as your savior that you have automatically received the gift of the Holy Ghost I I am here to tell you that is not accurate believing upon the Lord Jesus Christ and receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost is two separate distinct experiences believing is what you do giving you the Holy Ghost is what he does let me read on verse 17 for as much then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ what was I that I should withstand God when they heard these things they held their peace and glorified God saying then hath God also then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life so it's eight years later it's eight years later turn over with me to Acts chapter 19 Acts chapter 19 and we'll begin reading at verse number one Acts chapter 19 in verse number one and it came to pass that while Apollos now Apollos is a preacher was at Corinth that's a city Paul having passed through the upper Coast came to Ephesus and finding certain disciples he said un to them comma have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed again again church if believing and receiving was the same thing why does Paul writer of over half of our Bible ask such an absurd question because Paul knew believing and receiving the Holy Ghost is two separate distinct experiences he said unto them have you received the Holy Ghost since you believe and they said unto him we have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost said we we've not heard anything about it I'd stop right there there is so many good-hearted people that had a relationship an experience with God they'll tell you when I was baptized I I I I I felt something don't ever tell them they didn't did you ever tell them they didn't matter of fact you'll win more people by telling them that you're not there to take anything away from them but add to them well brother Carpenter I I I know I came up out of the water at my church and I I I I felt Joy don't ever say you didn't because I believe they did feel Joy but brother Carpenter why didn't I get the Holy Ghost if it was for me the answer is simple you didn't know about it you didn't know that God had a gift for you they didn't tell you that God had a gift for you they didn't tell you many churches don't want the Holy Ghost in their church because it's something they can't control we don't want to control the Holy Ghost it didn't upset me one bit tonight when these anointed singers these anointed musicians be begin to play and the Holy Ghost started moving and people got out of their pews and started coming up around the alt it didn't bother me that the body you the church reacted and came around and started to worship that didn't bother me at all but if you don't want the Holy Ghost to move and you got your little program all pretty and written up and you know exactly what time you're going to get out you know exactly what's going to happen at exactly the same hour the Holy Ghost will make you nervous but oh I'm here to tell you the Holy Ghost can do more in one second than we can do in 50 years the Holy Ghost can keep people coming back to church when personalities are dead and gone that's why we want the Holy Ghost that's why we want we've not so much as heard these men had not so much as heard where there be any Holy Ghost he said unto them unto what them were you B baptized they said under John's baptism well that's it then said Paul John barely baptized with the baptism of repentance saying un the people that they should believe on him that should come after him that's on that that that is on Christ Jesus look at verse five with me why don't we read it together when they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ let's keep reading and when Paul had laid his hands upon them the Holy Ghost came on them and they tongues and prophesy and all the men were about 12 can I tell you it is a wonderful scriptural experience that all we as a church we got to be reminded about it we got to be reminded about this gift and why we believe why we believe what we believe why we believe what we believe well we come to this point a matter of fact I might jump back at just in defense of the go in defense all right in defense um I believe the correct I believe the correct term that I would use is I'm I'm an Apostolic apologist okay I don't I don't like that because that sounds out the word apologize all right and boy I'm not apologizing for nothing but I sure will defend the truth when you hear people say Well it it's this and and and for example they'll take you to Acts chapter 8 we'll read this real quick and I'll I'll I'll dismiss you but I sure hope that what you got out of church tonight I hope I hope what you get out of church I hope the little precept that you get tonight the little nugget that you get tonight the little morsel that you get tonight I hope it is that you know how valuable it is to have the Holy Ghost Acts chapter 8 verse number five Acts chapter 8 verse 5 then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ unto them the people with one Accord gave heed unto those things which philli spake hearing and seeing the Miracles which he did for unclean spirits crying with loud voice came out of many that were possessed with them and many taken with pulses and that were lame were healed and there was great joy in that City but there was a certain man called Simon which Before Time in the same city had used sorcery that word there sorcery in the Greek is pharmaceutical he knew how to mix up drugs and bewitched the people of Samaria giving out out that himself was some great one to whom they all gave heed from the least to the greatest saying this man is the great power of God he could mix up stuff and make them high and he sold it to them and they believe that he was the great power of God and to him they had regard because that of a long time he had Bewitched them with sorceries but when they believed Phillip preaching the things concerning the king Kingdom of God in the name of Jesus Christ they were baptized both men and women then Simon himself the drug dealer Simon himself believed also and when he was baptized he continued with Phillip and wondered beholding the Miracles and signs which were done now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God they sent unto them Peter and John now why it's dangerous for the apostles to be out why would Peter and John leave Jerusalem and come down to Samaria verse 15 is the answer who when they were come down prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Ghost for as of yet as yet he was Fallen upon none of them only the they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus then laid they their hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost now right here they'll jump up and down and say right here is a scripture where they got the Holy Ghost and no tongues are mentioned read on with me and when Simon saw through the laying on of the Apostles hands the Holy Ghost was given he offered them money saying give me also this power see see nobody offers money for a ritual why would you why would you offer money just because two men came and put their hands on somebody's head and they said I've received the Holy Ghost although tongues is not mentioned there Simon the Sorcerer becomes the first man that wants to sell the things of God and he says I'll give you money I'll give you money what I have just witnessed I will give you money upon whomever I lay my hands that I have this power also that on whomsoever I lay hands he may receive the Holy Ghost but Peter said unto him follow verse 20 but Peter said unto him thy money perish with Thee thank God for preachers that can't be bought with money thy money perish with thee because thou has thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money they receive the Holy Ghost right two words are mentioned here I want you to see this two words are mentioned no tongues are not mentioned but there's two words that are mentioned power and gift power and gift Simon didn't just see Peter and John land hands on these men and they said thank you for the Holy Ghost they laid their hands on them and their chins begin to quiver and their lips begin to quiver and all of a sudden they begin to speak in the tongues and the joy of the Lord filled them and Simon looked at them and said if I could just sell this right here I could become a very wealthy man you're correct tongues is not mentioned but power and gift and the Assumption just like just like and I you you you all know that I've said this before if you're driving down the road I say hey look the cogil has got a new truck here brother Randy comes in his new truck he's got a new truck and it's got wheels on it you look at me like well duh that's why after it was established on the day of Pentecost that they spoke in another tongue after Isaiah prophesied about it and Jesus said they would speak in new tongues and they got it on the day of Pentecost from then on out anyone that received the baptism of the Holy Ghost got the initial evidence the initial outward sign that they spoke in a Heavenly language and I thank my God for it tonight I want you to stand with with me right now I want you to stand with me right now we're going to thank God for the baptism of the Holy Ghost tonight come on it's it's your comforter it's your comforter tonight it's the greatest thing that ever happened in your life it's the greatest thing that ever happened it's the baptism of the Holy Ghost oh mighty God I love you tonight it's a Sweet Holy Ghost presence come on praise him for it right now remember back on the day of the night that you received the Holy Ghost and begin to thank God I thank you for the gift Lord I Thank you for the baptism of the Holy Ghost Lord God I thank you tonight Lord father I pray for anyone under the sound of my voice tonight that has not yet been filled with the Holy Ghost with the outward evidence of speaking in a Heavenly language I pray that tonight's word will increase their faith I pray Lord that tonight's word will make them hungry I pray tonight God that you would move upon them Lord as we study the scripture and Faith come up by hearing and hearing of the word of God Lord I Thank you for it tonight here a little and there a little thank you for this opportunity I love you Lord Jesus I thank you for this gift in Jesus name we
