Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Who is my neighbor?

  • A lawyer asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, and Jesus turns him back to the law: love the Lord thy God with all the heart, soul, strength and mind, and thy neighbour as thyself.
  • Wanting to justify himself, the lawyer asks the question the sermon takes for its title: who is my neighbor?
  • On Veterans Day he tells of Roy Benavidez, who saved eight men in battle and was himself recognized in a body bag by a soldier he had once helped — a man recognizable by his good works to people who never asked for help.

Scriptures: Luke 10:25-37

God is no respecter of persons

  • Your view of people determines the treatment you show them; the lawyer sorted people into categories — Jew and Gentile, rich and poor, bond and free.
  • God is God of gods and Lord of lords, mighty and awesome, and he regardeth not persons: he will go to a penthouse and to a penitentiary alike.
  • Peter learned it at a Gentile's house: of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons.
  • James writes that to have the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ with respect of persons is sin, and a prejudiced person cannot claim the delivering power of the gospel.

Scriptures: Deuteronomy 10:17; Acts 10:34; James 2:1; James 2:9

The priest and the Levite pass by

  • The road from Jerusalem to Jericho was called the way of blood; the man who traveled it alone fell among thieves, who saw him only as prey and left him half dead.
  • A priest came down that way and passed by on the other side; the sermon prices his reason from the law itself — he that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days — the wounded man looked like trouble that would upset his life.
  • A Levite came and looked on him, and passed by too; looking on a thirsty or hungry person does not take the thirst or hunger away.
  • All humanity is our neighbor — every citizen of the county, the person on the factory floor, the people who literally live beside us.

Scriptures: Numbers 19:11

The Samaritan had compassion

  • The Samaritan saw the man and had compassion on him; compassion is the determining factor — Pharaoh's daughter had compassion on the weeping child in the basket, and eighty years later Moses stood before Pharaoh.
  • Miracles follow compassion: the leper came beseeching, and Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand and touched him — I will, be thou clean.
  • Jude says of some have compassion, making a difference; the church is Christ's eyes, arms and legs to a world that comes hurting.
  • The Samaritan bound up the wounds with oil and wine, set the man on his own beast, spent the night with him at the inn, and paid the host for what remained — and Jesus said, go and do thou likewise.
  • A church that will not sit through the night with the hurting is not fit to sit in during the day; somebody sat through the night in prayer for the pastor and his wife on a Michigan road, and love does not look away, ignore, or walk away.

thou and he answering said Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart with all thy soul with all thy strength and with all thy mind and thy neighbor as thyself and the lawyer and he said unto them or Jesus said unto him thou has answered right this do Thou shalt live but he the lawyer willing to justify himself said he said unto Jesus and who is my neighbor and who is my neighbor as a matter of fact I want to take that phrase and use it for a title today who is my neighbor father I love you this morning thank you Lord for all of the guests that I've been privileged to shake hands is my neighbor who is my neighbor I'd like to tell you about a man it's Veterans Day I'd like to tell you about a man by the name of Roy benavidez Roy benavidez on May the second 1968. was part of a 12-man special forces Patrol when it was surrounded they were surrounded by about a thousand of the enemy benavidez heard the radio appeal for help boarded a helicopter to respond Benavides was armed only with a knife he jumped from the helicopter carrying his medical bag and ran to help the trapped Patrol benavidez had distinguished himself by a series of Daring and extremely Brave actions and because of his Gallant choice to join voluntarily his comrades who were in critical Straits he exposed himself to the constant withering enemy fire but his refusal to be stopped despite that he had received several wounds he's responsible for saving eight men that day at one point in the battle an enemy soldier accosted him and stabbed him with his bayonet benefit as pulled it out drew his own knife killed him and kept going leaving his knife in the Soldier's body he later killed two more enemy Soldiers with an AK-47 while providing cover fire for the people boarding the helicopter after the battle he was evacuated unconscious to base camp he was examined and thought to be dead as he was placed in a body bag among the other dead soldiers but something happened benavidez had a reputation of helping people he was always helping people when a soldier was zipping up the body bag he recognized benavidez and he called for a doctor to come and examine him because something just told him benefit as was not dead the doctor was came and pronounced him dead and as the doctor was about to zip up the bag past his face benavidez managed to revive and spit in the doctor's face it was later discovered that he had a total of 37 bullets a bayonet stab scrapnel wounds as he fought and I'm getting some ring back here on the platform please as he fought as he fought in this battle is it amazing how this benefit is all of his time they're doing good for others and helping others didn't realize that that would one day turn around and cause a soldier that he had helped to say I just don't think he's dead I just know I think we pronounced him dead too soon had it not been he was recognizable by his good works to other people he was recognizable by helping people that didn't ask for help but they just needed help he was so recognizable that the man about to zip the bag up said wait a minute I recognize him I think we need to further examine him this man is alive still today and to the credit that he had helped people that didn't ask for help who is my neighbor this lawyer approached Jesus to tempt him in other words he was trying to Corner him and he asked the most important question a person will ever ask what must I do to inherit eternal life you know that's the most important question you'll ever ask because you are going you and I are going to live forever somewhere the fellow one time said well I don't want to go to heaven well that's your option you don't want to go to heaven but you're not going to stay here that's the most important thing to ponder eternal life he said good Master Jesus what must I do to inherit inherit eternal life something to be given to me at the time of my death to inherit eternal life and Jesus said well how how does the law read what do you what do you read from the word which tells me today congregation if we're interested in eternal life this is the only book that can tell you how to have eternal life this is the only book he said he said how do you read it what does it say what does the law say the lawyer went through a long list of love God with all your heart all your soul all your might all your strength and then he said and love your neighbor as yourself to love your neighbor as yourself Jesus said to the man this is how you read it he said you you've answered well this is how you'll have eternal life love God with all your heart all your mind all your strength all your soul and love your neighbor as you would yourself but the man wanting to justify himself because that word neighbor was a broad term he wanted to justify himself because he was extremely prejudiced against the Gentiles he loved his Jewish friends but that's where the the lion was drawn and he was willing to justify himself and he said well Lord you just tell me who is my neighbor who who is my neighbor and the Lord began a story the Lord began a story he said there was a a certain man that went down from Jerusalem to Jericho it's an interesting Road when you study geography and you study the road from Jerusalem because you understand anytime you leave Jerusalem in the Bible you're always going down it's always down because Jerusalem is the highest point so anytime anybody left Jerusalem they were always going there was always going going down of course that's symbolic Jerusalem broken up into two words girou City Salem peace is Jerusalem was that city of peace and of course God chose that City to put his name to put his name there but anytime you were leaving Jerusalem you were going down and it said a man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho now this road that winds itself it's much like the the thing that I could get everybody to realize today that road from Jerusalem to Jericho was a first century tale of the Dragon right down here all right it was filled with turns and twists and rocks and Dark Places as a matter of fact in study this week I discovered that it had a name it had a name the road was called in those days the way of the blood the way of the blood now the reason it was called The Way of the blood was because robbers thieves would camp out in the rocks and they would wait for people to come down through this way of blood and it would be there that they would be attacked and killed and robbed it had happened so many times it happened so many times that they just named the road it's the way of blood it's just simply the way of blood nobody in their right mind would ever travel the way of blood alone if you were going to make the journey from Jerusalem to Jericho you always did it in a band of people because the thieves and the robbers were not likely to attack a large group of people but the Bible simply says the Bible simply says that this man went down and there this man fell among Thieves he fell among Thieves in verse number 30. he fell among Thieves and they stripped him of his raiment and wounded him and departed leaving him half dead in other words he was dying they had possibly stabbed him beat him stripped him of His Garment took all the wealth that he had and simply left him simply left him for dead let me stop for a moment let me stop for a moment your view or opinion of people determines the way and the kind of treatment you showed him whatever your view is of people will determine the way that you view them the way that you treat them now Jesus he asked Jesus who is my neighbor and Jesus said well I just I want to ask you how do you view people how do you view people because this man this man was the categories in this man's life it was Jews gentiles Greeks rich poor Bond free those were the categories he was to ask are you a Jew are you Gentile are you a Greek are you free are you bound are you rich or you're poor and anytime someone views people through categories it will determine how they treat people but let me tell you about my God this morning let me tell you why he is worthy to be lived for and he is worthy to be served Deuteronomy chapter 10 and verse 17 says it this way for the Lord your God is God of God's and Lord of lords a great God and mighty and terrible which means awesome breathtaking which regardeth not persons nor taketh award reward God was being displayed on Earth as the god of Gods Not Another God like him the Lord of lords not another Lord like him isn't it amazing when he was being displayed in the case to the Earth he was told how awesome how awesome that he is how Mighty and strong he is but then something would be attached to all of that something would be attached to that and they would attach and he is no respecter of persons he doesn't have Jew and Gentile Greek rich or poor can I tell you God will go to a penthouse on Broadway but God will also go to a penitentiary in West Virginia it doesn't matter because he is the god that is no respecter Peter found this out the hard way because Peter saw all Jews as good and all Gentiles was evil but when he walked into the gentile's house and heard that the Gentiles had had a visitation from an angel it was Peter in Acts chapter 10 and verse 34. this is the verse of scripture that caused Peter to open up his mouth and preach the death burial and Resurrection not to the Jew only this is the scripture then oak then Peter opened his mouth and said of a truth I perceive I wish we'd read that together of a truth I perceive that God that's why the Gentiles came in because Peter began to say God doesn't view people from Gentile and Jew and bond and free God has one view of all humanity and that is he loves Humanity he doesn't treat you any better than he treats me he doesn't love you any more than he loves me what a mighty God we serve today who is your neighbor James chapter 2 would write to the church he would write to us in James chapter 2 and verse 1 he would write to us and he would say my brethren have not the Faith of Our Lord Jesus Christ the lord of Glory with respect of persons he said don't have the delivering power of the gospel and respect people don't don't have don't have the delivering power of God and have respecter of persons don't don't have the delivering power of God you you cannot be a Christian and be prejudiced you you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ if you think you're better than somebody else because of the color of your skin or because of what you drove to church today or because of how good your little life is that doesn't make you one bit better than anybody else aren't you glad to be in a church that practices that she's glad to be in a church today that we don't we're not looking at what you can put into our plates we're looking at what God can do to your life because you happen to be our neighbor today you say brother Carpenter that's a very strong statement to make that you're not a Christian if you're a prejudiced well let's let James continue in James chapter 2 verse number 9 it says it this way but if you have respective persons you commit sin and our and are convinced of the law as a transgressor well let's see something today let's see something today how did the Jew how did the thieves view this man how did the thieves view him the thieves saw him as a prey that's what they saw him as when he came winding down the tale of the Dragon we came winding down the way of the blood the thieves looked at him and the thieves saw him as a prey these heartless robbers they only cared about what he possessed they didn't care about what his name was they didn't care that there's possible a wife that he won't go home to he didn't care that there's children that he may never see again can you read my lips today they did not care they were heartless they didn't care that a wife would get the news her husband had been murdered they didn't care that a little girl would grow up without seeing her daddy they didn't care about the pain they did not care because their View was simply what get from you what a cruel world what a cruel world they got what they wanted they stripped him naked lifting bleeding and left him to die but wait a minute good news is on the horizon I think good news is on the horizon I think verse 31 and by chance there came down a certain priest that way and when he saw him he passed by on the other side wait a minute aren't priests supposed to be in the people business are we are priests supposed to be on the people business you know if you don't like the side of blood don't work at the hospital if you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen right the priests or the people business they were trained by God to educate people to help them to have a better life through understanding the Bible the priests were there because the people were ignorant and needed guide us the priest that was their job they were in the people business why well the priest came by and the priest saw him verse 31. he passed by on the other side now we can only surmise why he did this there's one verse of scripture that in Numbers Chapter 19 and 11 it says this about a priest it says this about a priest numbers 1911. he that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days do you think he looked at him and thought what if that God dies while I'm touching him why if he dies while I'm touching him I've had seven days of my life disrupted if I'm touching him and he dies then my life is upset my life is turned upside down for seven days isn't this a pitiful thing here that this priest That was supposed to be in the people business only view the man as trouble he viewed him as a nuisance he he viewed him as something that will upset my life oh let me tell you something today my God is willing not only to put time in you my God is willing to put eternity in you maybe I'm preaching to someone this morning who has left your Jerusalem and you've found yourself beaten and naked and laying on the side of the road ever losing life one drop of blood at a time I've come to tell you about my God today he's willing to put some time in you right now he's willing to stop by and he's willing to work with you today oh let me go on the priest he went by he passed by look at verse 31 he passed by on the other side oh I don't want to look at this I don't I don't I don't wanna I don't want to upset my beautiful life by looking at ugly Carnage I don't wanna I've got my I've got my ear pods in and I'm listening to the latest choir song and man I I don't want to take my earpods out and hear the moans of humanity I I don't want to take my ear pods out and hear the moans of people that are saying would you help me would you help me help me would you help me help me the priest went by on the other side verse 32. verse 32 and likewise a levite when he was at the place came and looked on him and passed by on the other side now the levite wasn't a priest he was a worker in God's house the levite wasn't a priest he was somebody who just worked in God's God's house his job was performed in the Tabernacle his job was performed in the temple could it be that the levite Justified himself and not helping because after all this isn't inside the church building after all brother Erickson if this man was beaten in the middle aisle I could I could go help him because that's where I shine is on Sunday mornings at 10 o'clock that's where I shine is on Wednesday nights at 7 30. that's where I shine is on Sunday nights at 6 p.m I shine in this place but when those time brackets are over I feel I'm not responsible to help anybody on the job I'm not responsible to be a witness to somebody at the restaurant I'm not responsible to try to engage someone sitting beside me on a plane in hopes of leading them to a discussion about Jesus Christ can I tell you there's a lost in a Dying World and I'm going to answer this today who is my neighbor all humanity is our neighbor all humanity is our neighbor and if I'm going to walk on streets of gold one day if I'm going to sit down by the but with Jesus one day it's not only going to be because I loved you with all my heart with all my mind with all my soul and with all my strength it's going to be because I loved lost humanity and I saw lost Humanity as mine neighbor as my neighbor the levite I don't know in verse 32 maybe he came by close enough so he think he could get online and fill out a prayer request and say hey saw a man bleeding today would you scroll it across the screen I don't know he came close enough he did come and look at him but after all if you only look on a thirsty person have you taken the thirst away if you only look on a hungry person have you taken their hunger away if you only look on a person that's distraught have you helped take that away no and a thousand times no he simply came and looked possibly the man possibly the man didn't see the priest so his hopes didn't get up but could it be that when he saw the levite that he thought finally somebody has come to help boy I sure don't want to disappoint a world to you this church exists to help this County We Exist because every citizen in Blount County Maryville Alcoa Greenback Townsend every human being becomes my neighbor the person beside me on the factory before becomes my neighbor the people that literally live beside me become my neighbor he looked in verse 32. and he passed by on the other side but verse 33 but a certain Samaritan and you got to realize how Jesus is doing this these Jews will hardly even pronounce the name Samaria or Samaritan because they're big rivals they're big rivals one worships on this mountain they both claim Abraham is their God one claims only five books of the Old Testament the other claims all the books of the the prophets one group said the Samaritans said we only believe in the first five books of the Bible don't send us no problem don't send us any prophets that's why Samaritans were grossly in their sins the Jews believed in the prophets but they didn't obey them I don't know what the difference should be not believing in them or not boban them it's the same result right but they hated each other the Jews had no dealings with Samaritans you didn't buy anything from a Samaritan you didn't support a Samaritan's store you didn't you didn't have any dealings with the Samaritan there was just hatred that was there but in the story Jesus says to the lawyer who categorizes people who asked well just who is my neighbor he says the word Samaritan you know it could have been it could have been I'm just having some fun here today with my imagination but you know it could have been people are people you know whether today or 2000 years ago it could have been as Jesus got talking that the the lawyer got to got to uh to to uh to to dabbling he didn't have an iPad maybe he just had a pad he just got to doodle on his Pad you know he just had him tuned out you know until Jesus he hears the word Samaritan what yeah yeah there's there's a priest that came by didn't help and there was a levite that came by and didn't help but the Samaritan came by and I could see him drop his pencil and look up did you just say did you just say Samaritan but a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came where he was and when he saw him he had compassion on him he had compassion upon him can I tell you something we ought to pray for church let's pray that we're a compassionate Church let's never lose our compassion for our neighbor I know that we can feel sorry for one I know we can have passion on the brother across the seat there or the sister back here I know we can have all kind of compassion toward one another but who is my neighbor all of humanity is our neighbor today and we have got to have compassion upon a loss and a dying and a suffering world we can't become callous like the priest for God's sake First Apostolic we are in the people business that's why we sung this morning we're in the people business that's why we gave today we're in the people business that's why your pastor and his wife left the United States a week or two ago and went to Germany to preach the gospel why because we are in the people business that's why we've got the Holy Ghost we got the Holy Ghost to be saved did you read the rest of it that you shall be Witnesses unto me in Jerusalem and in Judea come on wake up to compassion today come on wake up the compassion today compassion will change a world compassion compassion when he saw him he had something the priest did not have he had something to levite did not have he had compassion his heart hurt it yearned to help the man you ever you ever saw it in the Scripture it uses the term moved with compassion moved with compassion some people will be more moved watching a video on Facebook of a lion eating a deer see turn that off turn off I can't stand to see stuff like that but we can walk right by lost Humanity that we've got the answer for them and never one minute try to catch their eyes and give a smile not not not one one not one minute think about what could I do to say what could I do or say that might cause this person to have a hope in God to have hope in the church because quite honestly we are dealing with a culture that is given up on the priest and they've given up on the Levites because when they were hurting they were there but they weren't there but maybe at this last hour sister Carpenter God can raise up individuals sprinkle them out across Blunt County and it will become people that have compassion people that are gonna shed a tear people that can pray come on can we do that right now would you just lift up your hands and say God give me compassion God give me compassion for the Lost come on God give me compassion for the loss today oh God I feel so empty and it's because I'm not doing my job God give me compassion his heart hurt he yearned as he turned the corner he thought he heard a man moaning help me somebody help me help me what is that I hear he looks and there's a clump of naked flesh that's bleeding he looks and he sees a man that death is soon death is soon to take over and the Bible says he had compassion compassion is powerful compassion is powerful as a matter of fact the Jews better thank their God that a gentile had compassion or the Jews would never have had a deliverer by the name of Moses because when they put Moses in that little basket and they put him out on the Nile River and that little basket by the hand of God made its way down to where Pharaoh's daughter was going to wash Pharaoh's daughter stepped into the water and saw this Basket in Exodus chapter 2 and verse number six I hope you're with me this morning and Exodus chapter 2 and verse number six and when she opened it she saw the child and behold the Babe wept and she had compassion on him that's why she ordered for somebody to nurse him that's why she ordered for somebody to take care of him is because she had compassion on him if there had been no compassion she would have said to her Maids that's a Hebrew she knew he was a Hebrew and she knew all Hebrew boys were to be drowned in the Nile River had she not had compassion she would have told one of the maids would you please submerge that basket to the bottom of the Nile and do away with this child but because she had that one determining Factor 80 years later a man walks into pharaoh and says Let My People Go and it all started with the seed of compassion we need Compassion church we need Compassion church oh my God compassion changes it you ever thought about you ever thought about miracles you ever thought about me everybody wants miraculous oh I want the miraculous to happen I need a miracle in my life can I tell you I can show you from the scripture that Miracles don't happen until compassion takes place Mark 1 and 40. Mark 1 and 40. and there came a leper to him beseeching him and kneeling down to him saying unto him if thou wilt thou can make me clean verse 41 read it with me please and Jesus moved with compassion put forth his hand and touched him and saith unto him I will be thou cling if we are now the church which is the body of Christ we are his eyes we are his arms we are his legs when a world comes to our church on Sunday morning and says I am a leper I am soon to die would you do something we have got to take a hand of compassion and say good to see you this morning I'm glad that you would choose this place as your place of worship I'm not trying to compliment you I'm trying to give you some compassion I'm trying to give you some compassion because if I can give you compassion the healing's on the way the Deliverance is on the way the miracle is on the way Jude just said it this way in Jude 1 22 Jude just said it this way and of some have compassion and what does compassion do it'll make the difference it can make the difference he was moved with compassion verse going back to Luke 10 34. this man this this Samaritan was moved with compassion he saw him and he had compassion on him I can hear it now I forgot to tell you what I thought the priest and the levite might have said the priest didn't believe I might have got together and said well he oughta known better well he ought to have known better well he's in that shape because that well I guess that's where he wants to be he ought to known better well that sure does help people don't it he ought he ought known better he ought to known better way you know he should have known this was a way of blood he he he should have known better people are very foolish to think people that have been beaten and laying on the side of the road they want to be there he don't want to be there people's lives are in a mess today in our County people's lives are in a mess today we've got listen listen we're going to hear more of it we've got fentanyl pouring over the southern border and it's already affecting this congregation you know say well he must want to be that way she must want to be on they don't want to be on drugs they don't want to be alcoholics well yeah they go by they don't they need somebody with compassion you step in they need somebody with compassion hey yes yes yes yes yes it involves it involves going to lunch with somebody that's on drugs yes it involves going to dinner with somebody that's an alcoholic it involves that but it involves more than that it involves when nobody is listening when nobody is around to applaud you you're not the priest and you're not the levite it's the loneliness of your prayer closet and you're taking that individual Jesus you know what they're fighting right now Jesus would you send your spirit to them right now Jesus you know hell wants to take them to an early grave Jesus you know hell wants to destroy them somebody have compassion and praise pray pray he had compassion on him he was moved look at verse 34. and went to him and bound up his wounds pouring in oil and wine and set him on his own Beast and brought him to an end and took care of him let's look at this why does the Samaritan have medical material with him oil and wine and rags is how you treat the wounded oil wine and rags are all like a first aid kit if you looked at a first century first aid kit it would have rags oil and wine because that was the first aid kit you see I hope today that we can all leave here and understand that we ought to all be carrying the first aid kit because we don't know what moment we're going to stumble upon someone beaten and left for dead we don't know what moment we're going to come up on somebody that's bleeding the first thing that he knew he said I I've got to take these Rags here and I've gotta I've got to get close enough to the blood I got to get close enough and I gotta I gotta pour some oil and some wine and clean out the wound and I I've got to stabilize them I gotta I I gotta get the oil I got to get the the if I don't stop the bleeding if I don't stop the bleeding they're going to die right here the Bible says he treated him right there on the spot and then he took him to an end the end I would like to say represents a church we live in a world that needs more than an invite to church they need somebody with a first aid kit they need somebody that can find the hurts there's all kinds of hurts there's all kinds of hurts today there's all kinds there's all kinds of hurts today all kinds of hurts in our world today see if this doesn't just really sum up our world hurt can I tell you there is no greater hurt than Church hurt there's no greater hurt and hurt that happens in this place but by the help of God today I want you to be healed I want you to be made whole hurt guilt regret resentment anger numbness loss of Faith no desire to live and no hope if you run into anybody like that please have a first aid kit and don't let it be or if I could just get you to church if I just get you on Sunday morning if I just get you on Sunday night no no no no no no right there begin to minister to them right there he got down and began to tie up and and he said I shouldn't have taken this road that's not what I'm interested in right now we'll talk about what you should and should not do later but right now I want you to know you're valuable I want you to know that God loves you I want you to know you're going to live again you're going to breathe again you're going to walk again we're going to get you out of this things are going to turn around the Sun is going to shine I'm going to give you hope it's unbelievable Joy is coming back meanings coming back purpose is coming back to your life he bound up the wounds the man didn't pay for the first aid kit he bound up the wounds he put him on his Beast look at that yes sometimes my neighbor is gonna have to ride and I'm gonna have to walk sometimes my neighbor is going to have to be prayed for my neighbor is going to have to ride when I'm gonna have to walk some old Rocky Roads he took him to an end verse 34. and took care of him and on the morrow when he Departed do you see what I just saw in that verse he spent the night with him we need some people that will in a proverbial way spend the night with the hurting we need somebody that's just not going to drop off a care package and say see you in the morning we need somebody that will be willing to set up through the night when this fever spikes when he's somebody that can sit up through the night time and say you're going to make it the Day's coming when they murmur from their sick bed I don't know if I'm going to make it through this you sit there beside him and say oh yes you are I think I see the sun coming up now I think I see a ray of light coming up now just somebody that's under my voice today and you've got the darkest night of your life I believe I do see the Akins here this morning the Akins family I know it's the darkest day of your life right now but you're at MVC Maryville and we're not going to drop off a track and say I hope to see you next Sunday we're gonna stay with you through the night you're going to live again things will never be the same that you are going to laugh again you're going to have a smile again come on Church come on Church that's what a church is all about is shedding through the night and saying you're gonna make it some today some today beat yourself up for being a parent let me tell you something there's no perfect parent your pastor is not a perfect parent I don't care how John Walton looks that we make the carpenter Hammond and Erickson family look I don't care how Little House on the Prairie we make life look I don't care what our Facebook posts make you think goes on we are not perfect families we are not a perfect father a perfect mother a perfect family but somehow in the midst of all of that when life begins to fall apart we can beat ourselves crazy with condemnation and guilt if I'd have just done it different if I just raised my child different if I just made those decisions differently can I tell you I haven't come to place blame I've come to sit through the night with you I've come to sit through the night with you that boy is gonna come home that girl is going to turn around that marriage is going to come alive I've come to sit through the night with you a church just listen you hear me a church that won't sit through the night should Rejoice through the day but if I can shift through the night I see them coming back I see them walking back through the door oh God who is my neighbor who is my neighbor I tell you who my neighbor is my neighbor my neighbor is that little mama that made her way and said would you please pray for my children would you please pray for my children I brought them up to no God I brought them up to walking the truth but right now they're going as far away as they can let me tell you I am not a priest to tell you how wrong you raised your children because I'm no expert myself if my children are serving God right now it's nothing but the grace of God it's nothing but the grace of God I'm not here to tell you how you should have done things different what I'm here to tell you in the darkness of your night pray Mama pray daddy pray youth leader pray child child of God pray pray pray and pray more would you just erupted some worship right now come on if you got a herd would you praise him right now oh that that's not enough that's not enough that's nowhere near enough there's a lot of hurt here this morning there's a lot of hurt here this morning would you praise him again sir I know you got hurt but would you open your mouth up and praise sister I know you got hurt I know it was church hurt somebody blasted you on Facebook somebody gossiped about you you're so heard you've not praised him would you praise him with me one more time hurt hurt and on tomorrow when he Departed let me tell you a church it won't set through the night is not fit for you to set in during the day through the nights I don't want to put anybody on edge today I wouldn't mention names I don't make anybody feel uncomfortable but I'm going to tell you something you are probably sitting two or three people away from somebody that's set through the night that man that you think's got it all together that woman that you look at that young woman that you look at the young man that you look at if you only knew somebody sat through the night with if you can't sit through the night you want to enjoy them on the tomorrow we're enjoying a lot of people in this church we enjoy a lot of talent here at this church we enjoy a lot of people here at this church but I want you to know that what puts people on pews is not a good sermonette from a pastor and what puts people on a Pew is not good programs day cares and schools what puts people on a Pew is that somebody set through them night when their fever was the highest when their hope anybody in here would be transparent enough to say Pastor I've been in places where I thought there's no hope you notice I didn't raise my hand just waiting for all you to pictures down go sister salyards your pastor has been in places that I've thought there's no things have happened it'll never be the same what brought you out somebody sit with me through the night somebody said as a matter of fact as a matter of fact literally such a carpenter and I we're making our way back from Michigan much younger then driving through the night to get home not going to get back to Maryville to four or five in the morning coming down Interstate 75 South on the other side of the interstate I saw a car I saw its lights weaving back and forth I saw the car the car come across the medium and into our Lane and I yelled and me and sister carton embraced ourselves for an impact the car missed us went off into the Gully drunk driver truck driver didn't really think much about it the next day around noon I came over to the school we were up on the hill came over to the school Karen Kirby walked out of the classroom she said pastor had the most unusual thing happened last night said about four o'clock in the morning I was instantly awakened brother Purdue I was instantly awakened and said a spirit of prayer hit me for you and sister Carpenter and said I went into intercessory prayer for you and I began to pray for you all and when she said that I said what time was it she said around four o'clock in the morning and so help me brother Helms it was almost about that hour that that drunk driver comes swerving around and almost took your pastor and his wife out you say coincidence I don't say coincidence I say somebody set up with me throughout the night somebody oh when shame and guilt want to strangle the life out of me when condemnation wants to beat and beat and beat and beat somebody through the night tonight and says it's going to be all right you're going to shout again you're going to lift your hands again you're going to clap your hands again who is my neighbor and on tomorrow when he Departed he took out two pence and gave them to The Host you know why I'm a missions Giver you know why I'm a missions Giver because this world is my neighbor 's world my name we are
