Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Name That Tune: The Trumpets of Numbers 10

  • God gave Moses two trumpets of silver, made of one whole piece, for the calling of the assembly and for the journeying of the camps: blow for gathering, sound an alarm for marching.
  • The trumpets were blown by the sons of Aaron the priests, an ordinance forever throughout their generations; only the anointed priest's mouth could form the proper sound.
  • The preacher must be prepared: study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
  • God could have impressed every individual directly, but he chose a consistent system of signals, and his word today is our trumpet.

Scriptures: Numbers 10:1-7; Numbers 10:8; 2 Timothy 2:15

Cry Aloud, Spare Not: The Watchman

  • Isaiah's charge is to cry aloud, spare not, lift up the voice like a trumpet, and show God's people their transgression and the house of Jacob their sins.
  • Ezekiel's watchman is set by the people of the land; if he sees the sword come and blows the trumpet, whoever hears the sound and takes warning delivers his own soul.
  • The responsibility returns to the watchman: if he sees the sword come and does not blow the trumpet, the blood of the unwarned is required at his hand.
  • For Zion's sake the preacher will not hold his peace, and for Jerusalem's sake will not rest, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness.

Scriptures: Isaiah 58:1; Ezekiel 33:1-6; Isaiah 62:1

Doers of the Word, and a Certain Sound

  • Receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save your souls, and be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
  • The hearer who does not do is like a man beholding his natural face in a glass, who goes his way and straightway forgets what manner of man he was.
  • Even things without life give a sound, and if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle; the message cannot change with the times or the numbers.

Scriptures: James 1:21-25; 1 Corinthians 14:7-8

The Tunes of the Army, and the Last Trump

  • The morning call: awake to righteousness and sin not. The call to assembly: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, and so much the more as we see the day approaching.
  • Taps, the last call of the day: I am now ready to be offered, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
  • The charge: preach the word, be instant in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. There is also a call called retreat, and the church must never sound it.
  • If you go to war in your land, blow an alarm with the trumpets and you shall be remembered before the Lord your God; in the day of gladness, blow over the offerings for a memorial before God.
  • One trumpet call remains: behold, I show you a mystery, we shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump.
  • After this a door was opened in heaven, and the first voice heard was as it were of a trumpet, saying, Come up hither.

number one and the Lord spake unto Moses saying make thee Two Trumpets of silver of a whole piece shalt thou make them that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly and for the journeying of the camps and when they shall blow with them all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation and if they blow but with one trumpet then the princes which are heads of the thousands of Israel Shall Gather themselves unto thee when you blow an alarm then the camps that lith on the East part shall go forward when you blow an alarm the second time when the camps that lie on the South Side shall take their Journey they shall blow an alarm for their Journeys but when the congregation is to be gathered together ye shall blow but ye shall not sound an alarm for just a few minutes tonight I have a simple title that I would give you we're going to preach about Name That Tune Name That Tune let's pray savior we love you we are so grateful for your Mighty presence that we've already experienced Lord as the woman who was infirmed sought to touch you you Lord we hope that our praise and our worship and Adoration of you has touched your heart this night but Lord now speak to us through your word not of my ability or not of my voice but Lord let it be your word that reaches into our hearts touches us strengthens us renews us and changes us Lord we're thankful for this opportunity in the name of Jesus we we pray amen and amen name that tomb in our text it is apparent that God was setting up a signaling system to notify the mass Congregation of his people when there were certain needs for them all to act together it was an organized plan for coordination of the masses it was a manner of communicating to all when there was a need for a United movement you see God in his omnipotence he had the power if he wanted to he could have just impressed on every individual much as he does with the animals who by their nature who fly south in the winter or who hibernate in the trees God put those innate Natures there had he wanted to with Mankind and with his people he could have just impressed everybody it's time to assemble and they would have but that was not the way God chose for things to happen instead he had a system and that system would be a consistent very simple system of coordination and that system would be simply that there were two trumpets that would to be used they were made of one piece of silver and those trumpets would be blown but not just by anyone it was specific that the sons of the Prophet the two sons of the Prophet were tasked with blowing the trumpet to send these signals his word today is our trumpet and I submit to you his Messengers who blow the trumpet are the men of God and the representatives of God who bring the word to us aren't you thankful that his word still gives us Direction and aren't you thankful there are anointed people who will carry the gospel to give us the signals that God has for us the noted Bible commentator Adam Clark said of numbers 10 the statement make the Two Trumpets of silver the necessity of such instruments will at once appear when the amazing extent of the this numerous Army is considered and how even the sound of Two Trumpets could reach them all is difficult to conceive but we may suppose that when they were sounded the motion of those that were Within Reach of that sound taught the others in succession what they should do in other words when the trumpet sounded everything else should cease so you should hear what was being said I've got news for you when the word of God Goes Forth there's nothing more important than hearing the word of God from the preached word of God everything else should cease and we should hear what thus sayith the Lord is for us numbers 10 and 8 said and the sons of Aaron the priests shall blow with the trumpets and they shall be to you for an ordinance forever throughout your generation the spiritual leadership would give the signal and it was a law you were supposed to listen to what was being blown and what was being sent to all the people through the sound of the trumpet Clark went on to say since the since the trumpets were to be blown by the priest only the sons of Aaron there were only two because there were only two such persons to use them at the time Eleazar and ethar the trumpets spoke of this spoken of In this passage were made of a solid piece of silver they did not have valves like a trumpet today they did not have slides to adjust the tone quality or to tune them instead the sounds that were emitted by these one piece trumpets were totally created by these skilled and anointed priests and it was left up to them to prepare and understand exactly how to blow the trumpet ET if they wanted to sound assembly or they wanted to sound an alarm it came from their mouth they had to be prepared it was an anointed priest only his mouth could form the notes that had to be played only his expertise and his preparation would send the proper message at the proper time if you're going to be a preacher if you're going to carry the gospel you you need to be prepared you better know what tune you're playing to preach the gospel is more than getting a little thought and a little exhortation to preach the gospel there must be preparation through the word of God and anointing that comes only from God second Timothy said it this way in 2 Timothy 2:15 study to show thyself approved unto God oh Workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth if you're going to pre be a preacher you got to study and you got to work let me say that again if you're going to carry the gospel you got to study and you got to work he said study to show thyself approved unto God a Workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of Truth not everyone is capable of preaching the gospel there were only two preach now if you think I'm up here bragging on me I'm not I'm thankful by the call of God but I am also AED by that call and I want you to know it is a something we must take very seriously if we're going to carry the gospel if we're going to give this gospel to a lost world it does not need to be a confused gospel it does not need to be an unsure gospel but we must preach thus sayeth the Lord that's the trumpet and the mouthpiece of the priest must preach it as thus sayeth the Lord you see we're not needing more pull pit dizzy Gillespies now you Young Bucks may not know who that is but that was a jazz Trumpeter once upon a time we're not needing more Doc senson in the pull pit we're needing anointed godall voices that can speak as thus sayeth the Lord and not afraid to give the proper sound if there's a need for an alarm the man of God must know how to cry out the alarm that there needs to be a warning if there's a call for assembly the man of God needs to know how to assemble the church just as we did today the church reacted as one voice because there was a call that went out Isaiah 518 said it this way I cry aloud spare not lift up thy voice like a trumpet show my people their transgression and the house of Jacob their sins did you know it's a challenge and sometimes a very arduous task when God gives an anointed voice the responsibility of crying out to sin now I don't mind telling you if if God gives me one of those in encouraging exciting messages that that that just is so positive and I believe in positive preaching you've heard me say before but I will repeat it we do need more Home on the Range preaching where seldom's heard a discouraging word I want us to be positive with the gospel but there will be times that God will impress upon the man of God through his word to call out sin for sin to call out evil and iniquity and call it out from the pull pit and let the preach word of God sound an alarm and sound an a warning to all that would hear it doesn't matter if you can play Boogie wogie Bugle Boy from Company B can you call the church to assembly you may can play jazz Better Than Miles Davis but can you call the church to repentance and preach the message of Holiness and lifestyle behavior and appearance when it's necessary you make him play Hot Licks like Louis Armstrong but can you give a clear warning when the church is under attack to say it's time for the church to reunite and come together because we're in spiritual warfare Ezekiel begin to clarify the responsibility not only of the one who would blow the trumpet but Ezekiel also gave instructions to all that would hear in Ezekiel 33:1 we read again the word of the Lord came unto me saying son of man speak to the children of the people and say unto them when I bring the sword upon a land if the people of the land take a man of their coast and set him for their Watchman you see the man of God needs to be a Watchman the man of God needs to have foresight and be alert to the attacks of the enemy I guess I will forever remember the little story that our Bishop told about the Vantage point of being up on a hill one day here at the church when our kids were competing out on the field there was a a place you could kind of go up on on the hill on the far side and and from that vantage point you could see two sides of the church you could see the length of one of the Wings and you could see the back of the wing and Bishop said he was sitting there watching some of our kids play ball but then all of a sudden it caught his eye there were a couple of kids running just as hard as they could run down this sidewalk and he could see some more running this way from his vantage point he could see around the corner but neither group of kids could see what was happening and he was saying hey there's going to be a collision here you see God appoints Watchmen and impresses Watchman who he puts them in a vantage point that many times we don't always even know why the message is going out but we need to hear what's being preached and say oh God is this a warning to me oh God is this direction to me sometimes he has been given a view that we don't even see sometimes God God has impressed a you that we don't even know but if we will heed the warnings if we will now it sounds negative again to talk about warnings that you know sometimes we need to he heed the call to celebrate and be Joy us some of us show up all the time with the mully grubs whatever that is I can't even spell mully grub but it don't sound good does it but too many times we can find ourselves in a defe as attitude and we can come into the house of God and the voices that will be will start calling us to praise to worship to Joy to encouragement and if we'll hear what the word of the Lord is saying it'll very much change your direction and change your attitude when you get to having pity parties that you're about to break your arm patting your PO little s on the back when you can get in the house of God and somebody can remind you of the thing that God has done for you the blessings he's provided for you all of those things that he's done for you sometimes I need just a little encouragement and a little bit of joy to change my Outlook preacher blow that trumpet make me happy preacher blow that trumpet encourage me but notice what he said he said they'll sit for their Watchmen and if he seeth the sword come upon the Land There there's an attack coming he blow the trumpet and warn the people whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet and taketh not warning if the sword come and take him away his blood shall be upon his own head did you know all the preacher can do is preach the word to you he can't make you obey it we have a responsibility not to become oblivious to the word not let me boy I I have to watch my vocabulary I started to say address the old heads that sounds mean don't it let me address all of us experienced that's a better word all of us experienced Christians you know we're the ones that can say bless God I've been in the way for 30 years that's may be the problem you've been in the way for too long but again if we aren't careful we will find ourselves rather than hearing the word and reacting to it we will become oblivious to the word because we've heard it before I've heard the trumpet blow before they say in this most recent catastro atrophy there's been several testimonials of folks who said oh I've heard them give warning so many times before that well there may be a flash flood warning and let's be honest with ourselves most of us in this house we've seen those warnings come across the crawl on the screen or heard that L Buzz that's on the radio before they say this is a special weather alert and they'll say there's a flood warning and they start naming the counties and even when they name your county when they say Knox County or severe County or Blunt County or Anderson County most of us we've heard it so many times if we aren't careful we'll become oblivious to the warnings that go out and if you've been in the church for so long you can find yourself oh I've I've heard the message before I it's not important for me to even be in the house of God I I I I can do something else and and I I'm still going to be all right let me tell you there are fresh warnings that God places upon God call men and women to give warnings and to give direction if we aren't careful we will who are experienced will become oblivious to God's warnings and the Very one that he's trying to get their attention will be so lost not hearing the word while they're sitting in the house whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet and taketh not the warning if the sword come and take him away his blood shall be upon his own head he heard the sound of the trumpet and took not warning his blood shall be upon him but he that taketh the warning shall deliver his soul oh I'm thankful for those messages that's gone forth yeah I I I've said it before whoop he stepped all over my toes and you know what I say thank you God thank you God for keeping me reminded thank you Lord that you care enough about me that there will be a message preached if it wasn't for anybody else in the house it was for me it was to direct me it was to keep me safe from the attack of the sword the attack of the enemy but then responsibility also goes back ultimately to the Watchman for it says but if the Watchman see the sword come and blow not the trumpet and the people be not warned if the sword come and take any person from among them he is taken away in his iniquity but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand before you take on the moniker of carrying the gospel realize there is a responsibility that you have to preach thus sayeth the Lord oh but God if I preach that I may offend thus and so and you know they're a great supporter of the church oh I they they're a very talented person they they play music or they do technology and I I might offend them if I cry out against where they're living let me tell you if the man of God is silent with crying out against sin for anyone your blood will be on his head I tell you I promise to you I pledge to this church as God God gives us guidance and direction we will cry out the voice of assembly we will cry out the voice of gathering together but we will also cry out the alarms against sin so that this church may be protected and warned if the enemy should attack Isaiah said it this way in Isaiah 621 for Zion's sake I will not hold my peace or will I not hold my peace one version says and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest until righteousness thereof go forth as brightness and the Salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth somebody has to preach it someone has to listen to it I don't preach this gospel so somebody will say man he's a good preacher I do not preach to exercise pmic prowess or rhetorical ability but oh let it be said that the preacher preached thus sayith the Lord the preacher preached his word James said it this way in James 1:21 wherefore laying apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness and receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save yourself you got to receive the word be ye doers of the word and not hearers only deceiving your own selves oh but I hadn't missed a a Sunday service and 10 years great are you doing what the word said or you just hearing it you see I'm thankful for every individual that hears the word but I want to be with a church full of doers that's what we have here if there's a call we have a church full of doers folks that obey the word of God it said it went on to say for If any man be a hearer of the word and not a doer he is like unto a man beh holding his natural face in a glass that's talking about a mirror in other words he gets up and he looks in the mirror and say I look good for he beholdeth himself and goeth his way and straightway forgetthe was if we aren't careful we can look in the mirror at one season time think man we're looking good both spiritually and naturally and we can forget what where we came from and what is is trying to be exercised over us and what the enemy is trying to attack us with it said but whosoever lookth unto the perfect law of living Liberty and continue there he being not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work this man shall be blessed indeed don't just look in the mirror and say I'm still looking good for one time go out and do something good well I want to give you a little bit of an example in our history in the US history our military one of the essential ways of communicating in the past and I'll read you a little statement until electronic communications displaced it was through bugle call the primary bugler was assigned to the headquarters staff and kept close to the commander at the front soldiers were quick to learn the cause of the bugle and on a routine day at least four and as many as 10 calls were made bugle calls are musical signals that announce scheduled and certain non-scheduled events on the Army Installation some of you exmilitary folks know this if you are ever on base scheduled calls are prescribed by the commander non-scheduled calls are sounded by the direction of the commander individual sometimes have interesting and historical precedence the bugle was first used as a signaling instrument by the American Army during the Revolutionary War the bugle calls evolved from the Continental Army contact with French and English armies during the Revolutionary War these two Nations have had the most effect on our present system of calls in the early years of our nation's Independence each arm and branch of the army developed its own sound signals with drum beats and for the Infantry and bugle calls for the calvary and artillery by the end of the Civil War the artillery Calvary and infantry were sounding bugle calls in 1867 General emry Upton directed major Truman Seymour fifth US Artillery artillery to prepare a definitive system of calls with the the objective of eliminating confusion evident during the Civil War major Seymour reviewed all the calls then that were used in the Army he discarded some revised others and finally fashioned the set of calls which have remained in use up until present time in 1867 bugle calls were standardized for all branches of the army Adam Clark said that in the time of Joshua there were seven trumpets used by their priest but these were made according to the text of rams horns in Joshua 6:4 in the time of Solomon when the priest had greatly increased there were 120 priests sounding trumpets you can read about that in 2 chonicles 5 and12 what do I want you to understand from this it's important that we must not change our tune just because our numbers increase we must standardize but not customize our message we must stay with the word of God and its Origins it will not change because the numbers grow it will not change because the times changes it oh we we may have some new methods of presenting it that a lot of times I I've been to funerals recently military funerals and uh they're supposed to play Taps at the end of the funeral it's still the same tune it may be one of the trumpeters I was a little bit disappointed in when I figured it out man he he was so good so I got to look in close at his trumpet and it was electronic but you know what it was doing it was playing the same tune the tune hadn't changed let me tell you we made grow we may increase in numbers but our message cannot change our methods may be modernized but we can't change the word we can't change the doctrine of salvation we can't change the doctrine of Holiness we can't change our way of doing things we've got to preach thus saith the Lord 1 Corinthians 14 let me read verse 7 I gave you folks up there verse 8 but I'm going to start with verse 7 1 Corinthians 14:7 says this and even things without Life Giving sound a trumpet has no life but it gives sound whether pipe or harp except they give a distinction in sounds how shall it be known what is piped or harped verse eight says for if the trumpet give an uncertain sound who shall prepare himself to the battle if our message has changed if this used to be wrong but now it's not sin anymore you see too many times this happens to the modernized denominal lied Church things that used to be called sin are no longer sin anymore things that we used to cry out and was wrong now are never mentioned anymore L we offend someone I'm here to tell you sin must still be cried out against hly Holiness must be elevated the Jesus name Apostolic message must continue to be preached thank you Bishop for Wednesday night bible study that preached the the Salvation message the acts 238 message you see we used to sing a song that said I'm a soldier in God's Army and I'm fighting straight to Victory I will not give up I will not turn around I'm a soldier marching heavenbound I'm thankful to be in the army of the Lord I begin reading a little bit about this these bugle calls and there was about five of them that were especially important one was r anybody that's ever stayed on a military base you know what R means rely is that first thing in the morning that says get your hide out of bed the day is starting now it wasn't inconsistent I read that rly standardized is blown at 5 a.m. for all you folks that didn't know there's a 500 a.m. there really is every morning and R was sounded every morning 1 Corinthians 15:34 said awake to righteousness and sin not that's the message every day every morning we should awake too righteousness and not sinning there's another tune that's quite often played it's called the tune of assembly that s all the troops they were to assemble at a certain place in their Rank and row to begin the instructions of the day Hebrews 10:25 said not forsaken the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some but exhorting one another so much the more as you see the day approaching for if we willfully sin it is willful sin to consistently not assemble in the house of God if we willfully sin after that we have received the knowledge of the truth there remaineth no more sacrifice for sin there's another tune that's quite often played and that's Taps now it is used at the completion of a military funeral but its first purpose was a signal that all unauthorized lights be extinguished this is the last call of the day and it's used at military funerals to conclude the ceremony second Timothy 4:6 said for I'm now ready to be offered the time of my departure is at hand I have fought a good fight I've finish my course and I've kept the faith oh God I want it to be said when my races run whatever it was just as we preached brother Martinez's funeral on Saturday I I want it to be said that I've completed the course I didn't quit I didn't fall short whatever you call me to do I've completed whatever you would have me do there's just a couple more that I would call to your attention there's a bugle call in the military that's called charge you know what the church still knows how to charge we charged this morning when there was a need we charge when there's a need around us second Timothy 4:1 said I charge thee therefore before God the Lord Jesus who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing in his kingdom preach the word charge be instant in season and out of season reprove rebuke exhort with all longsuffering and Doctrine let me give us all a charge there still should be Doctrine in the church the doctrine of righteousness the doctrine of Holiness the doctrine of salvation we cannot run from it and there's one other tune that I would mention praise team and musicians you can start getting ready and I must say all of these other Tunes I was familiar with in some form Taps and R and charge and assembly but there is a tune that's called Retreat and I was thankful I wasn't familiar with Retreat we used to sing a song that said just keep praising him just keep praising him just keep praising and never sound Retreat I looked up the history of that one tune Retreat please no offense to anyone who might be a this lineage but there is actually a tune called Retreat and with all due respect to french fries and the Statue of Liberty yes you guessed it we got it from the French army now its real purpose was not to withdraw from the battle Retreat actually meant it was time to retire and go to bed but I'm here to tell you in the work of God it is a horrible thing when anyone Retreats from doing what God has called them to do I pledge to you we will not Retreat we will advance we will charge we will continue to do what God has called us to do stand with me numbers 10 and9 said if you go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you then ye shall blow alarm with the trumpets and ye shall be remembered before the Lord your God that ye shall be saved from your enemies if we'll keep blowing the trumpets God will remember us we're going to keep preaching the apostolic message we're going to keep preaching the righteousness message we're going to keep preaching the Holiness message verse 10 says and in the day of your gladness in your solemn day in the beginning of your month you shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifice of your peace offerings that they may be to you for a memorial before your God I am the Lord your God every time we hear the voice of the word go out we need to know it's thus sayeth the Lord for I'm here to close with this there is one other trumpet call that we the Believers need to be waiting to hear for 1 Corinthians 1551 said behold I show you a mystery we shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed in a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last Trump there's one more voice that's going to go forth at the last Trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised in corrup corruptible and we shall be changed God is coming back for his people who are attentive I'm looking for the sound of the trumpet I'm looking for Jesus to come back I'm living every day in anticipation that I'm going to hear the Trump of God's sound the dead in Christ will rise first and then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and so shall we ever be with the Lord that's not just a comforting funeral scripture that's the prophetic voice are you listening are you listening tonight is your ear attentive to the call of Christ are you hearing tonight Revelation 4:1 said in after this I looked and behold a door was opened in the heaven and the F first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me which said come up hither I will show you all things which must be Hereafter and immediately I was in the spirit John the Revelator he's having this vision and behold a throne was set in heaven and one there wasn't three seats and one sat on the throne if you will hear the voice that God's calling to us today to make sure we live in righteousness the trumpet is being sounded the warning is being given it's not by accident that one individual's in this house God ordained it for us to be so every voice that's going forth every ear that's hearing on
