Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
She Called His Name Judah
- He reads Genesis 29 from verse 31: the Lord saw that Leah was hated, opened her womb while Rachel was barren, and Leah bore Reuben, saying surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction, and Simeon, because the Lord hath heard that I was hated, and Levi, saying now this time will my husband be joined unto me.
- He rehearses the story behind the text: Jacob the deceiver deceived by Laban, the veiled bride, and the second seven years of labor for Rachel.
- Leah named her first sons out of what God had seen, what God had heard, and what the custom required, yet she remained unfulfilled; with the fourth son she said, now will I praise the Lord, and called his name Judah.
- He opens with his own name: this coming Friday he will be 65, and his parents named him Mark Anthony McCool; his father did not want him called Billy Jr, and a name carries a meaning that must not be forgotten.
- Praise is the part that requires our participation: it may not change the condition immediately, but it changes our attitude toward the condition; if you feel hated or unloved, learn to praise him now and send up your Judah.
Scriptures: Genesis 29:31-35
Forgetting What Our Name Means
- Judah became a tribe and then a nation, but the nation forgot what its name meant: in Jeremiah we read that backsliding Israel was put away, yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not and defiled the land with her idolatry.
- The church was born in praise and must not sell its praise for appearance, status, peer pressure, or acceptance; nothing about our praise is for sale.
- Zechariah said the Lord shall inherit Judah, his portion in the holy land: praise is God's portion.
- The psalmist cried, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me, yet confessed thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel: God dwells where people praise, and he will move in with the one who starts praising.
- Genesis 49 says of Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise, and thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies: be a pain in the neck of the devil by praising that much more.
Scriptures: Jeremiah 3:8-9; Zechariah 2:12; Psalms (book-only, as spoken); Genesis 49:8
Praise That Fights
- In 2 Chronicles 20, besieged Judah hears, be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God's; Jehoshaphat bows, the Levites stand to praise with a loud voice, singers are appointed to praise the beauty of holiness before the army, and when they begin to sing the Lord sets ambushments against the enemy.
- Praising in the beauty of holiness is not appearance only: it is holiness in language and in how we treat our brothers and sisters.
- First Chronicles charges us to give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name and bring an offering: praise belongs in our giving too; you cannot afford not to tithe.
- Psalm 147 says it is good to sing praises unto our God, for it is pleasant and praise is comely: nobody looks unattractive while they are praising God.
- Hebrews says by him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name; the mouth is the last battleground, and he closes the service with the psalmist's call to let the people praise thee, O God.

said I'm glad to be with a bunch of praisers brother O'Brien I'm glad to be with somebody that can praise when they been look at you're not supposed to stand up what's wrong with you I'm glad to be with somebody that knows how to praise some of you folks don't you know you're not supposed to be able to praise God tonight I'm glad to be in the house of the Lord with a bunch of praisers Hallelujah Glory Glory I'm going to dispense with all of the Prem message compliments and you're all worthy of them as one preacher said I give prot to call to those I don't know to call I compliment everybody but let me get into the word Genesis 2931 it gets right to the Crux of the matter Genesis 29:31 says and when the Lord saw that Leah was hated anybody in the house don't raise your hand ever felt like Leah when the Lord saw that Leah was hated he opened her womb but Rachel was Barren and Leah conceived and bear a son and she called his name Reuben for she said surely the Lord ha looked upon my Affliction now therefore my husband will love me she conceived again and bear son and said because the Lord hath heard that I was hated Heath therefore given me this son also she called his name Simeon and she conceived again and bear a son and said now this time will my husband be joined unto me because I have borne him three sons therefore was his name called Levi and she conceived again and bear a son and she said now will I praise the Lord let me say that again now now will I praise the Lord therefore she called his name Judah and left bearing for a few minutes tonight I would speak to you on this subject she called his name Judah right don't forget what your name means let's pray savior I Love You Lord I'm grateful for your Mighty presence that we have already experienced Lord you're here here right now Lord the great God Of Heaven who spoke this world into existence who created all the wonderful and beautiful things that we enjoy every day who put the solar system in place Lord the god of every situation you're in this place tonight and God we call on you you Lord that we could give you the praise that you so richly deserve Lord I pray that you would touch my heart touch my mouth that I could speak to a soul in this house Lord that your word would encourage would strengthen be powerful to bring us to you as we should be for all this we're grateful in the name of Jesus we pray amen she called his name Judah what did does a name mean I'm not real sure what my mom and dad had in mind when they named me this coming Friday I will be 65 years old 65 years ago they named me Mark Anthony MC I have heard my dad say he didn't want me to be be called Billy Jr or Little Billy so I I thank him for that but I don't know what Mom and Dad had in mind when they name me so I started doing a little research on what my name means now uh all of you Google ites out there when you have a little more time you can indulge yourself in googlez don't you like that and you can research what your name means but let me tell you about Mark Anthony MC tonight my surname mul is traced back to Northern Irish roots and the name literally by the research I did means son of the servant a stranger born of an early Irish saint I'm a bit skeptical but then the name Mark I read is a common male given name thank the Lord and is related to the Latin word Mars go figure it means consecrated to the god of Mars mom and dad really and it may also mean God of War or to be warlike well maybe there's more hope in Anthony so the word or the name Anthony is traditionally a masculine name thank the Lord again with roots going back to ancient Greek and Roman cultures as well as the Basque language wow in Basque Anthony means he who adds well I guess I can do math and in Latin the ancient Greek it is derived from a Roman family name Antonius which means Priceless one oh yeah yeah I like that so in summary my name means warlike God of Mars who adds or is priceless the son of a servant and a stranger I still don't know what Mom and Dad had in mind when they named me but with all of that said and that useless knowledge that I just gave you I would transition to our scripture and let you you see that in our text we find some very important references to names and what those names mean and the reason for those names being given for you see the first verse got right to the Crux of the matter it said the Lord saw that Leo was hated understand the atmosphere understand the situation I would review briefly even though most of you who have ever studied the scripture know the story that Leah was the oldest daughter of laan she had a younger sister named Rachel the Bible described them thusly they said that Leah had tender eyes and and the scriptures said that Rachel was beautiful and and well favored now I'm not here to denigrate Leah in any way for that's all scripture said about her but in some form and some manner whatever tender eyes meant I don't know if that meant she needed an optometrist I have no idea what that meant but for whatever reason the comparison was she had tender eyes but her younger sister was beautiful and she was well favored there was a comparison between the two so as you read the history you find that Jacob the supplanter Jacob the deceiver who had deceived his brother Esau of their Birthright had now left the country Esau was already marrying Daughters of Canan to spite his father and he was out to get Jacob Jacob had fled the country and he had found laan's house and scripture tells us that when he saw Rachel she was so beautiful he cried Bros I don't recommend that as a good way to come on to that girl you fell in love with don't cry in front of it first thing anyway but he went to Daddy and said I want to marry your daughter Rachel Daddy said no problem got that covered just work seven years for me and you got her wow but you know what scripture says of that to us seven years seem seemed like a long time but the scripture the scripture tells us that it was to him just a short time or a brief time because he had his eye on the prize he was going to marry Rachel he worked his seven years he went to laan said I've done my work I want my bride laan said no problem we'll go through the wedding ceremony they went through the wedding ceremony understanding the culture of that day and of the culture that Jacob the deceiver had entered into their culture was that she stayed veiled until after the wedding took place so the wedding took place and you know the scripture know what happened he unveiled his beautiful bride Rachel only to find the soft soft eyed sister Leah behind the veil he went to LA and said hey what have you done I didn't want to marry Leah I wanted to marry Rachel he said it's our custom you see it's really important to understand when you get away from your custom you can find yourself in a mess our customs be in the house of God marrying the faith and do all that now that was in the side I just jumped a rabbit but I'll chase him in a little while you better care be careful when you get outside the B boundaries of the church and what you've been raised in you're going to find some customs that'll hit you to some stuff you weren't expecting back on task so he said you've deceived me he's deceived the deceiver he said well if you want to marry Rachel now no problem I need seven more years labor and you see laan knew what he was doing because Jacob even in his deceitful ways had been blessed and and because Jacob was blessed J Jacob living in the vicinity of laan's household made laan blessed Laban didn't want to turn loose of Jacob so he added a seven-year requirement to Mary Rachel and our text brings us to the time now that the second seven years the 14 years has been completed and he's married to Rachel and understanding that even though these were the people of Covenant this was just the third generation of being chosen of God and it was still a polygamist culture that there were multiple wives in that culture and scripture tells us that the Lord saw that Leah was hated and in that day the only thing that they looked upon as being a successful wife was a wife that was producing children so to try and find some satisfaction in a relationship of a husband who hated her the Bible says that God seeing that she was hated opened her womb and she began to Bear children to Jacob Rachel the one he loved was still Barren had no children yes we might feel sorry for Jacob and his being deceived but I feel even more pity in the story for Leah's plight she's in a situation A hor a horrible situation in the culture of that day there's no way out herself is esteem must have been horrible to know that your husband hates you and the only way she could find or at least search for any validation was to Bear children so the firstborn child she named Reuben and she said Ruben's name meant surely the Lord ha looked on my Affliction the Lord sees aren't you thankful that we're serving a God that sees our situation he can see what's going on in your situation if you feel hated the Lord sees what's going on but notice just because God could see it happening Leah had not found satisfaction or completeness notice that tonight just because God seeing what you're going going through that do always find the satisfaction in our fulfillment that we need so she bore another son his name was Simeon his name meant the Lord hath heard that I was hated the Lord heard he saw your situation and he heard your situation he knows he sees he hears yet Leah is unfulfilled so she bore still another son Levi this time my husband be joined unto me because I have borne him three sons the law the culture has now been fulfilled now please understand what the preacher saying tonight Leah was at this point every child she had named up to this point it was an external in influence God's seeing it God's hearing it and the law or the requirements of the culture has been satisfied I can bear children so my husband ought to love me now but Leah is still not fulfilled Leah still feels hated let me tell you sometimes in our flesh just because God sees something and just because God hears something and we're fulfilling the law if we're not careful we'll find out ourselves still unfulfilled with the desires of love that we want she's not satisfied yet with her situation so you heard me read it you heard the praise team sing about it until this point it was God and the law but now for her to find personal satisfaction wholeness and completeness she had to give birth to something that required her participation and she said now will I praise the Lord therefore she called his name Judah let me tell you if you want fulfillment in your situation no matter how bad you feel you may be feel like you're hated you may feel unloved you may be on the short end of the stick if you'll learn to praise God if you'll learn to birth Judah birth praise in your life there's some satisfaction and fulfillment that you've never seen before somebody hear me in this house if I learn to praise him through my situation don't wait till it's fixed Praise Him Now send up your Judah now he want it took Leah doing something she said now will I praise the Lord go God saw it God heard it I fulfilled the custom but I've got to do something hear me in this house God sees God hears the law understands but you've got apparent praise in your life to be completely fulfilled don't forget what Mama named you don't forget what your name means time would pass Judah would go from being now will I praise and become a tribe Generations would pass Judah would then become a nation but sadly Judah would forget what their own name meant they started out as a completion of the love when she would give praise but now Judah over multiple Generations finds itself as a nation and in Jeremiah here's what Judah the now will I praise has been reduced to in Jeremiah 3:8 we read and I saw the word of the Lord speaking when all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away God had turned his back on Israel for Israel had sought other spiritual lovers I given her a bill of divorcement yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not but went and played the Harlot also and it came to pass through the likeness of her whoredom that she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones or idols and with stocks a young man born of Praise a tribe of worshiping Warriors a nation made strong of Praise now has prostituted itself and sold its praise to the real true God it has turned to gross idolatry worshiping objects Stones heun by hand the most degrading rights and impure rituals Judah has played the Harlot their praise has been sold out their affections as the nation of Judah are now up for higher preacher what are you saying I hope you can see the analogy with all of us and the church if we forget where we've come from and what we were born into if we forget what the Apostolic Church really is there are those of us who were born into this Apostolic truth hated disdained beaten down with no hope so many in in this house we came to the house of God with nothing no lineage no future no nothing and we came in praising something happened when we came into the church the first time we didn't understand it but somebody was leading Us in Praise we clapped our hands because we felt something we patted our foot because it was the right thing to do and we were born in Praise hallah but if we aren't careful we can become a church we can become a people we can become an Apostolic movement that forgets what our name means and forgets what we are we are the apostolic church we should be known for our praise we should be known for our worship God help us when we don't know how to praise and praise makes us uncomfortable God help us if we're afraid to clap our hands if It embarrasses if somebody dances a little bit and and shouts if we look with disdain at the worship and the praise that goes up we didn't know what to do but just to praise God when we came into the church you've heard Bishop testify as a small boy he didn't know anything to do just but to dance and shout and preach so many of us when we were feeling down with we didn't know what else to do but just to praise God when we came into the church we didn't know any better because it made us feel good praise will make you feel good now I want you to understand Leah when she bore praise and said now will I praise it didn't immediately change her condition but it changed her attitude toward her condition let that sink in sometimes God is doing a work but the work he's really needed to do is on us it may not be that our situation is going to immediately change but our attitude toward our situation can be mightily changed if we are praisers under God when we're in need we need to praise when we got a problem we need to praise whatever the situation I'm going to praise if I'm feeling down I'm going to praise if I have a need I'm not going to be afraid to lift up my hands under into any circumstance see if we aren we aren't careful we'll become an Adam and forget what our name means we'll sell our praise much as Judah the nation did and seek after other things to give our affections to we'll sell out for peer pressure acceptance single young folks will sell out for boyfriend or a girlfriend I've seen folks that would dance and Shout until that one they thought they wanted came to church boy quit preaching started meddling already or I wanted to invite somebody to church but I just know if I bring them to church that'll be the night the place will blow up and they're going to think I'm crazy man pray that that's the night that blows up so they'll know your crazy in love with Jesus give your best Praise You Better Watch What Happens around you that person that you've been inviting may say I need what they' got they can get dead anywhere they can get boring anywhere this needs to be a house of Praise every time we come together Hallelujah man I came in I used to get excited and I dance but now it's going to miss up the crease in my pants you know I don't I don't want to get too sweaty in my new threads boy that dated me threads what are those that's all right I've had a half a dozen folks already look at me and say what's cradle roll it's all right Bishop I know what cradle roll is I don't understand these kids somebody talked about getting merch I said what in the will world is merch that was merchandise New Generation they talk about stuff but I digress some will sell out they'll sell out their praise for their appearance for their status some folks praise because of their circumstance not in spite it listen folks shouldn't be able to tell whether you've had a good day or a bad day by the way you praise every day ought to be a praising day they should know what's going on in your life by your praise or lack thereof you ought to be a praiser every time you come into the house of God you need to be able to send up Judah remember what our name means remember who we are oh Hallelujah you can't pout your way out of a problem you better learn to praise don't sell your praise remember what your name means there's a reason she called us Judah don't sell out well-worn story I've told it before but repeat for the three that hasn't heard it Story Goes that there was a man driving across Texas he saw a huge field that was fenced in had nearly a mile of road frage and all along that road Frontage there were antique farm implements in different stages of need and repair Old tractors old farm implements a place where a collector of such Commodities would see a gold mine and he drove for nearly a mile seeing all of these old implements and it was it was so interesting to him and near the end of the mile there was a great big fence and he was about to turn in to ask the price but there was a great big hand lettered sign at the fence and it simply read this Nothing is for sale some of us need to get us a paint can and we need to put by Our Praise a big sign it says nothing is for sale I'm not going to sell out to my situation I'm not going to sell out to my problem I'm going to be a praiser no matter what because God does something when you praise Zachariah said it this way the Lord shall inherit Judah what does Judah mean now will I praise the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion praise is God's portion yes the psalmist said it this way my God my God why is Thou forsaken me sound like dve was in pretty rough shape why aren't there so far from helping me and from the words of my roaring Lord I've been roaring oh my God I cry in the daytime but thou hearest me not and in the night season and am I not silent but Thou Art holy oh thou that inhabited the Praises of Israel if you feeling hated if you're feeling lonely if you're feeling mistreated if you feel like nobody loves you don't be crying out God you forsaken me it said he lives to inhabit means to live or dwell well in he lives where people praise if you can't feel Jesus you need to start praising cuz he'll want to move in with you he wants to live in your praise he wants to dwell there oh Hallelujah he dwells in Praise well I'm just not popular nobody likes me everybody hates me some of y'all are already thinking think I leave need a worm I know praise will call you to be ca you to be praised Genesis 498 said Judah Thou Art he whom thy Brethren shall praise and thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies thy father's children shall bow down before thee you want to be popular praise God don't forget what appraisers names mean you want to fit in and be a part of the real crowd just be a praiser praise God don't dwell with Larry the lobby dweller you know the guy that if it really gets loud in church sticks his head in to see what's going on don't be part of Larry the L Lobby dwellers group it used to be note rting Nelly now I guess it's texting Tommy shooting all over the tree you know don't be a part now this is no insinuation on where anyone's dwelling because you've only got so many front seats what was that group that used to sing the back seat boy no back back don't let your spirit become part of the back seat boys you know what we need we need what we got here I call you the front row roues I don't need backseat boys I need front row roues folks and come in re listen our altar is a place for worship and praise yes it's a a place of repentance but some folks don't understand soon as church start some of you folks are already you're getting cranked up why I've had a bad day and I'm needing to praise I've had trouble I'm needing to worship I'm a praiser I'm going to send up my Judah I'm [Applause] going you see it said thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies I want to be a pain in the neck of the devil when he's after me I'm going to praise that much more I hope he say oh no don't do that again be a part of the front row roues the enemy can't stand praisers that's right 2 Chronicles 20:15 Judah now the nation is besieged by the ammonites and the moabites King Jehoshaphat is asking for direction he said hearken ye all Judah all you praisers all ye inhabitants of Jerusalem and Thou King Jehoshaphat thus sayith the Lord unto you be Not Afraid nor dismayed by the reason of the great multitude for the battle is not yours but God's let me tell you there's some of the folks under the sound of my voice some of you people listening out there online you've been all tore up about world situations we should be aware but we shouldn't be afraid we you better know that the God we're serving his word is being fulfilled he's in charge but he's coming back for the praisers he's not coming back for the dead heads he's coming back for the worshippers those who love him his word being fulfilled don't you be afraid be Not Afraid nor dismayed by the reason of this great multitude I don't care how many March in the streets and what color flag they're waving I'm going to praise my god with everything that's in me ye shall not need to fight in this battle set yourselves stand you still and see the salvation of the Lord with you Hallelujah oh Judah oh you praisers and Jerusalem fear not nor be dismayed tomorrow go out against them for the Lord will be with you praise team you may as well get ready you're in trouble if you sing anything else but what I want you to sing and Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground did you know you can Praise on your knees sometimes sometimes that's the posture that praise starts in sometimes you have to lay yourself down physically and you have to lay your spirit down emotionally to start giving God the best praise that he deserves Jehoshaphat the king reduced himself to kneeling before god Jos had bowed his head and his face to the ground and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the Lord and worshiped the Lord and the Levites of the children of coites and of the children of kites stood up after they knil down then they stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with a loud voice on high uhoh It Might Get Loud It Might Get Loud oh oh you don't have to yell at God he's not nervous he's not hard of hearing either he likes to hear Praise sometimes he gets excited when we praise him he says I'm moving into that bunch and they rose up early in the morning and went forth Into the Wilderness of tooa and as they went forth josaphat stood and said hear me oh praisers hear me oh Judah and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem believe in the Lord your God so shall you be established believe His prophets so shall you prosper and then he had consult and when he had consulted with the people he said we're going to get together we're getting ready to have a battle we've heard Bishop preached this before he appointed singers said we need a praise team we're about to be invaded we need a praise team we're we're under siege Ammon and moabit they're everywhere here's our defense get the praise team together get the choir together give me some musicians together we're about to have a battle here he appointed singers under the Lord that they should praise the beauty of Holiness oh I I didn't know Holiness was involved here let me tell you if we're going to be praisers we're going to have to be a Holiness Church Holiness in our appearance Holiness in our language Holiness in the way we treat our brothers and sisters I'm still talking about praise praising in the beauty of Holiness isn't restricted to just the way you look that's part of it but you can look good and have old nasty Spirit you're not praising God in the beauty of Holiness if you're so in Discord you're not praising God in the beauty of Holiness you better find a way to love people love those around you care about some folk hear me oh Judah and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem believe in the Lord your God so shall ye be established believe His prophets so shall you prosper and when he had consulted with the people he appointed singers unto the Lord that they should praise the beauty of Holiness and they went out before the army man that that don't sound real intimidating I mean in that day it appears that it would have been a whole lot more intimidating if there had been swords and Spears and and all kind of uh armed Warriors he said nope get me the praise team get me the choir we we're going to war because you see when God inhabits the praisers suddenly there's nothing can stand against it and when they begin to sing and to praise the the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon and Moab and mount serup which were come against Judah and they were smitten let me tell you stand with me your praise will Smite your [Music] enemy 1 Chronicles 16:29 said give unto the Lord the glory do in his name bring an offering oh no preacher you're not going to go there are you yeah I knew it's going to be about money no it's about your blessing that's right if you praise when you give an offering I oh I can't afford to pay my tie no you can't afford not to pay your tie you can't afford to miss out on the blessing come praise and I'm going to do this by faith I'm going to give by faith God's oh hear me in this house if we'll be praisers in every facet of our walk with God our giving our Holiness Worship the Lord bring an offering come before him that means you come to church yeah you can watch online if there's no other option but listen if you can be here you ought to be here come before him get in his house get among the praisers there's something just different about it when you can be in the house of God preacher I'm getting old I I'm afraid I won't look good man it there's wrinkles that got wrinkles nowadays you w to look good praise God lord hallu Psalm 1471 said praise ye the Lord for it is good to sing praises unto our God for it is pleasant and praise is comely the term comely means Pleasant to look at attractive I've yet to see anybody unattractive when they're praising God and there's a whole lot of ugly in this world I didn't have to say that wasn't that terrible but God knows how to clean up ugly something can be so ugly but when the Holy Ghost takes over a life I've seen folks so Bound by sin sin has made their life so ugly has made their appearance so ugly but when they come before God and they suddenly start giving him complete praise there's a beauty that comes on there's a beautifulness there's an attractiveness it's comely to praise God praise team get out of here I want to hear that tune played a little bit before we sing that's what I want yeah I need a little little of that yeah just keep that right there keep that going Hebrews 13:15 says by him therefore let us offer the sacrifices of praise to God continually that means you got to put forth the effort it's a sacrifice to praise sometimes sometimes you feel like letting somebody else do the praising for you you make the sacrifice that is notice this that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name now please hear me in this house you'll see folks from time to time who will come and hear the word of the Lord preached and they feel what you're feeling they experience what you're experiencing they want to get involved D in the praise but I I've seen them and you will have seen this when you pray with folks in the altar sometimes there'll be those that aren't familiar with what's going on this is the only praise they've got and they're trying they're trying but they won't give the calves of their lips they haven't been taught to speak it out let me tell you that's the last battle ground that the enemy has you hear me if he can just keep your mouth shut this don't bother [Applause] [Music] him this alone don't bother him this right here he's got dances out in his world but there's something different when you start speaking something [Applause] out you let the Holy Ghost take a hold of your tongue and speak through your mouth there's something different takes place he said give the fruit of our lips giving thanks to if you don't know what else to say just say thank you Jesus thank you Jesus thank you Jesus suddenly your hands mean something suddenly your dance mean something suddenly your shout means something let me tell everybody in this house it's it's time to give the praise of our lips whatever your situation is you've stood by long enough and watched others praise it's time for you right where you are to throw your hands up and open your mouth and let the Holy Ghost speak through you Hallelujah I want y'all to sing a little bit of that song and I want us to
