Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Barnabas: The Real Thing
- The believers scattered by the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Cyprus and Antioch, preaching the word; tidings of the revival reached the church at Jerusalem, and they sent forth Barnabas.
- Barnabas, when he came and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.
- Barnabas departed to Tarsus to seek Saul, and for a whole year they assembled themselves with the church and taught much people; the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
Scriptures: Acts 11:19-26
What a Christian Is Made Of
- A Christian is not ashamed of the label — not ashamed to be called a Christian, an Apostolic Christian — in a label-conscious society that carries every label except that one.
- Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Ghost and of faith; goodness and the Holy Ghost are two separate and distinct characteristics, and both belong on the label.
- Without faith it is impossible to please him, for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Scriptures: Hebrews 11:6
Love God First
- Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding — it is extremely important that Christians know what they really are and why they do what they do.
- Let a man so account of us as the ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God; moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful.
- The preeminent thing is to love God: loyalty must not be taught to a church, an organization, or a minister at the expense of loving Jesus first — when you love God, you will repent of your sins, be baptized in Jesus name, be filled with the Holy Ghost, and live a holy life.
- Therefore let no man glory in men; and great peace have they which love thy law, and nothing shall offend them.
Scriptures: Proverbs 23:23; 1 Corinthians 4:1-2; 1 Corinthians 3:21; Psalm 119:165
Holiness and Brotherhood
- Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord — there had better be holiness on your label as well.
- Both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, and in the midst of the church will he sing praise.
- We call each other brother and sister as a characteristic of respect and honor among the children of God — not a heaven-or-hell issue, but a mark of the family.
Scriptures: Hebrews 12:14; Hebrews 2:11-12
Honoring Leadership and the Aged
- A bishop must be blameless, the husband of one wife, not self-willed, not soon angry, a lover of hospitality and of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate, holding fast the faithful word so that by sound doctrine he may exhort and convince the gainsayers.
- Titus also taught that the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith and patience; the aged women teachers of good things; and young men sober-minded, showing a pattern of good works and sound speech that cannot be condemned.
- Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head and honour the face of the old man; the glory of young men is their strength, and the hoary head is a crown of glory if it be found in the way of righteousness.
- Servants are exhorted to adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things: we are Christ's decoration, the example by which the world knows what a real Christian is.
Scriptures: Titus 1:4-11; Titus 2:2-8; Leviticus 19:30-32; Proverbs 20:29; Proverbs 16:31; Titus 2:9

of the Lord I'm wants to get into the word in just a moment once again I want to say how pleased I am to have a church family here that happens to live in Nashville I slipped up today his name is officially Anthony Garrett but I still call him James Anthony because I remember him when he he was James I think so I'm so glad to have James Anthony and his family and I'm so glad to have brother Martinez and his family I love you gentlemen dearly and uh we're just so glad to have you all home as I said these are home folks who just happen to live in Nashville and we're glad to have you all back in the house of the Lord with us tonight to all of our guests if I do not have a guest card from you I welcome you just the same I want to take us to the book of Acts tonight the 11th chapter the book of Acts the 11th chapter I want to begin reading at verse number 19. acts 11 we'll begin reading at verse number 19. let's read now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Venus and Cyprus an Antioch preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only and some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene which when they were come to Antioch spake unto the grecians preaching the Lord Jesus and the Hand of the Lord was with them and a great number believed and turned unto the Lord then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem and they meaning the Church of Jerusalem sent forth Barnabas that he should go as far as Antioch there was revival going on the church was sending Barnabas who when he came notice had seen the grace of God was glad and exhorted them all that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord for he was a good man and full of the Holy Ghost and the faith and much people was added unto the Lord then departed Barnabas to Tarsus for to seek Saul and when he had found him he brought him unto Antioch and it came to pass that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church and taught much people and notice this last statement it said in the disciples were first called Christians first an Antioch the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch and I want to speak to you on this subject for a few minutes tonight Barnabas the real thing Barnabas the real thing let's pray savior I Love You Lord I'm so grateful to once again be in your house and have the Blessed opportunity to preach your word savior I know I am nothing and I can do nothing but with your help all things are possible Lord your word is powerful it guides us it leads us and Lord let us Feast at your table tonight and Lord let us hear and receive all that you have for us but Lord let us not only hear and receive let us act on your word as it moves in our hearts we thank you and praise you in Jesus name we pray amen Barnabas the real thing the passage of scripture that I read in your hearing closed by saying the disciples were first called or were called First Christians at Antioch this is where they were first labeled if you will as Christ the ends Christians followers of Christ and his teachings I looked up the word Christian to get just the dictionary slash generic definition and said one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ synonyms of a Christian include notice this decorus becoming befitting civilized comely conforming correct decent proper respectable and right that's the definition of a Christian and that's what that label that first being called should mean but sadly today it appears that in our label conscious Society most will carry any label except being called a Christian right many are afraid to be called a Christian Now understand there's a group now that I would refer to as the bet Association that wants to let their sexual orientation be known by all letters of the alphabet and they will proudly Proclaim to be so yet if you call any kind of perverse lifestyle sin your phobic we can have some labels yet some are afraid to be called a Christian don't label me a Christian and for sure don't label me Apostolic don't give me a label I don't I don't want to really know what I am let's come up with a generic name for our church so nobody really knows what we are or what we believe Now understand this is inconsistent to the way many of us and most of us really feel about other things for many if they want to purchase clothing or fine apparel it must have certain labels it must be Ralph Lauren or Gucci or Hugo Boss or Armani or JCPenney you know many will pay extra to get the label oh but preacher I'm not into that designer stuff oh Mr Macho when it comes to buying power tools it's got to be Craftsman or Milwaukee or Ryobi or DeWalt or Black and Decker some of these guys will about fight you over the quality of the power tools you're using they gotta have a certain label I'm talking about nowadays brand loyalty is extremely important to many I'm talking about even in trash bags are you Hefty or do you do glad you know so I would confess to you tonight I know Pastor Anthony when he preaches he he studies and prepares and he's familiar with so many through his education his the theological studies I hear Bishop McCool and his his studies and how he prepares and he will quote different theologians and commentators Pastor Whitley is so well read and he two studies well I get inspiration from a lot of places so tonight I want to let you know I got inspiration from a tag on sister Jamie's pillows that's not quite Spurgeon or Clark is it but I must confess and I know we have police officers in the building I hope you don't arrest me but I have a label here that I tore off of a pillow sorry honey it says under penalty of law this tag must not be removed except by the consumer maybe I got by on a technicality there I do consume that pillow sometimes there are some labels that do not need to be removed there are some things I still am proud to be called a Christian I'm not ashamed to be called a Christian I'm not ashamed to be called an Apostolic Christian brother O'Brien I'm not ashamed to carry that label I'm not trying to be an undercover Christian I want the world to know that we are still a Christian church we are still an Apostolic church that's who we are and that's whose we are for you see I said Barnabas was the real thing do you does anyone in the house know what that relates to if you say it's the real thing what is that Coca-Cola that was their Hook Line Coke it's the real thing just with snob appeal they let every other Cola drink no if you really want the real thing you gotta drink Coca-Cola well I want you to know Barnabas was the real thing and he's the example that facilitated that term Christian first being used at Antioch now that pillow label that I have States certification is made by the manufacturer that the material in this article are described in accordance with law all materials consist of crushed waterfowl feathers ninety percent and down 10 percent in other words that's what it's made out of what is a Christian made out of why would they suddenly start calling these folks Christians after Barnabas facilitated and went to Antioch and started continuing the Revival notice what Barnabas was made of in our text acts 11 22 it said then the tidings of these things came into the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem they sent forth Barnabas that he should go to Antioch who when he came had seen the grace of God now that don't mean he saw Grace walking by what that means is he had a revelation it had been revealed to him what Grace really is you see if you're going to be a Christian you've got to have the revelation of what Grace really is what the grace of God is the grace of God is not some man-made idea of a license to sin and God's going to cover it absolutely not the grace of God is the unmerited favor of Christ that we are allowed to live a sinless life when we're obedient to his word we don't deserve his mercies we don't deserve his grace but you see Barnabas first had the revelation of Grace and then don't just skip over it too quick we're talking about the ingredients what's in a Christian am I a Christian am I the real thing like Barnabas after he had the revelation of the grace of God it said he was glad he was glad some of us need to get glad being a child of God ought to make you glad I preached the whole message about it and I won't repreach that again but we need to find some more gladness in our life we need to wake up every morning with a grin on our face the devil wonders what we're up to because we have revelation we are glad we are children of God we're not ashamed we're not hiding yeah we're going to have troubles it's going to rain on our parade sometimes but let me tell you I'm going to stay glad in the Holy Ghost there's something special about being an Apostolic Christian are you glad tonight if you're going to be a Christian you need to be glad you need to be happy he was glad and to notice it said he exhorted with purpose of heart that they should cleave unto the Lord now I'm into definitions I like to know what words really mean I that's not a word I go around using a lot hey you need to cleave so I need to find out what clean really meant he looked for the opportunity he exhorted that term means to strongly encourage he strongly encouraged the folks at Antioch to cleave cleave means to stick fast to to adhere strongly to particular in particularly in pursuit of belief to become very strongly involved with or emotionally attached to listen I want my emotions to be attached to serving Jesus I want to stick to it I don't want to be in today and out tomorrow I'm a Christian all the time it doesn't matter if it's on Sunday morning or it's Tuesday morning at work I want to be a Christian at all times I gonna be the real thing like Barnabas and it said he exhorted others he told us he didn't go around silent he was looking for an opportunity to exhort to strongly encourage others to cleave to Jesus and then it simply says he was a good man well it's speaking of Barnabas I submit to you being good is not gender specific all of us need to be good men and women you see it has become in Vogue and popular and popular in our society to be bad we're bad boys bad boys bad boys what you gonna do I don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about we're bad in fact in our speech badge turn to good and goods turned to bad somebody looks at you and say well you're a good one but if they say you bad means good and good means bad it said he was a good man yeah that lets me know that part of him being the real thing being a Christian that would facilitate Revival at Antioch and becoming synonymous with Christians Christians who followed Christ in his teachings you ought to be good men and women we ought to be good Folk before he folk can even hear our gospel if we'll be good people if we'll be good neighbors if we'll be good employees and employers if we'll be too much is being good and it said he was full of the Holy Ghost you know what that lets me know those are two separate and distinct characteristics I've run into a lot of good folks that didn't have the Holy Ghost and too many times I ran into folks who claimed to have the cold he goes it didn't act so good listen if you've got the Holy Ghost you need to know notify every facet of your life you need to be a Christian through and through you need to be honest your integrity should be impeccable everything that you try to accomplish should be done with class and character now I know we're not running around the building chasing each other right now but you better hear me if we're really going to be Christians if we're going to be the real thing there's some characteristics that we should follow it said he was full of the Holy Ghost I run to a lot of folks that's full of something they're full of Bologna or something but it's not the Holy Ghost you need to be full of the Holy Ghost that you make spiritual decisions and consultation with the Lord even about common earthy things Pastor Anthony so aptly told this morning about he is a child recalling that that his grandpa came across the street and prayed for a sick dog and some would think that less than spiritual but to that child at 10 years old it sent a message let me tell you sometimes we're turning over the big things to God and we're trying to handle some little things on our own we turn those things over to God they would never become big things man I prayed about some stuff that some of you folks would think might be trivial but at the time it was important to me I needed an answer I needed God to fix something it didn't mean anything to anybody else in this world we we need to be full of the Holy Ghost and full of faith it said he was full of faith Hebrews 11 6 said but without faith it is impossible to please him for he is for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a what a rewarder that's it a rewarder of him that diligently seek him that's the real thing and then notice what happened the next thing Barnabas did Barnabas sought out Saul who we know as Paul Barnabas begin looking for someone that was even more experienced than him to teach an Antioch it lets me know that Barnabas was not about self-gratification and self-addulation Barnabas said I need to find someone that's experienced that can come and help us and you know what happened when he got Saul there notice they had church and they had teaching for one solid year you read it for yourself and it said and they came to pass that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church and taught much people you know Christians like going to church did you know apostolics like going to church did you know they're not looking for an opportunity to not have church apostolics are looking for an opportunity to be in church to have church they love teaching they love preaching they love ministering they love the activities of the church that's why some of you folks thanksgiving's coming you're not planning on just sitting around with the family nothing wrong with that but there's many in this house you're going to head to Nashville for National youth convention and we're going to have church Wednesday Thursday and Friday right during Thanksgiving as we say in East Tennessee right slap dab in the middle of Thanksgiving why because we like being in church that's who we are that's what we do and you know what then you'll turn around and come right back to church on Sunday and Sunday night why that's where we find our fellowship that's where we find our friendship those are christins those are Christians it's the real thing there's many of you who have sacrificed finances and time that your children can get a Christian education so many of you give of your time volunteering to teach to coach to drive buses or Vans to Mentor Youth to operate equipment in churches to greet in the lobby when you'd like to be in here right now to give your time to practice and sing and play why because your Apostolic Christians you want to be real and in the family you minister to senior Saints and those in need you pay your tithe and give your offerings freely because you're Christians this was a combination of actions and attributes that led to that label Christians now I would remind us you can find other brands some trying to be frugal look for certain products that have no label that are much less expensive some even counterfeit anyone's ever been to New York and gone to Canal Street you've gone to Soho and go to Canal Street man you can get Rolex watches for 19.99 you can get Gucci and Prada 29.95 you can get our version of Ralph Lauren polo green you'll smell it smells a lot like water you know but the product it sort of looks like it they're sold at cheaper prices and budget stores the roadside flea market stands that come up on Saturdays and Sundays and they're gone the next week but it's not the real thing it's our version someone else's version of what being a Christian must be let me ask you a couple of questions if something is so good why must it be like something else if you are really a Christian why wouldn't you want to carry that label if you're Apostolic why would you want to keep that label why would you want to remove such a label I've heard folks try to convince my dad to eat seafood Bishop is not a fan of seafood and invariably the sales pitch is this it tastes just like chicken to which Bishop usually replies I'll have chicken I don't want fish that tastes like chicken if I want fish I'll eat fish if I want chicken I'll eat chicken there's no need to try to be like something else let me tell you the world will always be better at being the world than we could ever be we need to be who we are we need to be the Church of the Living God we must remain Christians Sanctified Holy Ghost filled water baptized still serving Christ in the beauty of Holiness unashamed and unafraid not being proud or boastful but just be who you're supposed to be foreign Bishop I heard him once say if labels are not important your next trip to Kroger is what would it be like if all the canned goods they just took all those labels off of them you just had nothing but cans try to shop then you know if you're having corner beans for supper you see it may be okay to be generic and Frugal when it comes to polo shirts soft drinks cologne and canned corn but when it comes to serving God there's no substitute for real Christians apostolics we must remain the real thing and we must not develop knockoff labels it appears many Church movements are afraid of being labeled so they posture themselves as non-denom we have no brand yes and you likely have less quality control as well remove all the identifying marks I've also seen a few places that you could go that the labels have been cut out of clothing I've been to those places they cut the labels out and they'll usually have a disclaimer on them it says Factory defect no return boy and sometimes you feel real good about that man how what a deal I'm getting till you get that shirt home and one sleeves down here and this one's up here like that you know you put those socks on and want to come up to your knee another goes around your ankle the manufacturer is saying there's a defect there's a problem I don't want to cut our labels out I want us to be known to the world that we are still a Christian Church one of our former presidents proclaimed that we are not just a Christian Nation and sadly it seems that we're trying to prove that it seems that we're trying to embrace everything except Christianity you can be anything but be a Christian and be popular Proverbs 23 23 says by the truth sell it not also wisdom and instruction and understanding is extremely important that we know as Christians and as apostolics what we really are and why we do what we do First Corinthians 4 1 said let a man sow a cannabis as the Ministers of Christ and stewards of mysteries moreover is required in stewards that a man be found faithful we must be in love with God and not just the church or even the activities or the pastor let me pause here because I want to make sure that we teach everybody that the preeminent most important thing that leads us to Salvation is to love God if we aren't careful we can even Teach as I'm preaching tonight and it can be misinterpreted as we can teach loyalty to the church or to an organization or to a particular minister at the expense of telling everybody first and foremost you've got to love Jesus you got to have the love of God in you for you see if you've got the love of God and you you will be loyal to your church it will just happen you'll be faithful in your attendance It Won't Be The Minister's personality that motivates you to serve God it won't be the church activities that are your primary focus it won't be getting a paycheck a pat on the back success or Acclaim even enjoying what you do is not the primary motivation motivation we've got to teach everybody to love God and when you love God you'll serve God and when you serve God you'll follow the Acts 2 38 message you'll repent of your sins you'll get baptized in Jesus name you'll be filled with the Holy Ghost you'll live a holy life unto God First Corinthians 3 21 said therefore let no man glory in men it's not about us for all things are yours it's all about Jesus if we love God no adversity can make us quit a hot or a cold building a malfunctioning sound system contemporary praise or a southern gospel song will not offend us Psalms 119 165 says great peace have they which love thy law and thing shall offend them you see there's got to be some stuff on my label I preached it a lot last Sunday but I can't go past it there's better be Holiness on your label as well Hebrews 12 14 said follow peace with all men and wholeness without which no man shall see the Lord I love to hear Bishop say Holiness he can't say Holiness without putting about four O's in holiness it just sounds extra holy when you say it Bishop I'm glad to be in a hole in its Church I'm not ashamed to live a holy life I'm doing my best I want to live holy before God I want to be pleasing to him I'm a Christian I'm an Apostolic and you know since this appears to be a shotgun message and I'm shooting all over the tree I might as well go on now we should not let respect and honor leave the characteristics of being a Christian now I know it's kind of weird to some folks that we call each other brother and sister you know why we do that because you're my brothers and you're my sisters you know it's amazing that again in the society we live everybody's so worried about how they're addressed you're afraid to call somebody Mr or Mrs him or her it what you know what do you say nowadays why would we be ashamed to call each other's brothers and sisters Hebrews 2 11 says for both he that is Sanctified and they have who are Sanctified are all of one for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren you know the Bible says that I'm not ashamed brother Jones that you're my brother I'm an only child in the natural but spiritually you're my brother ladies you're my sister I'm not ashamed of that verse 12 said saying I will declare thy name under my brethren in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee man in some circles it has become in Vogue in the church hey Fred hey Ella hey you're my brothers you're my sisters this shows a camaraderie are you preaching this as a heaven or hell issue I am not I'm preaching it as a respect and honor characteristic that we have children of God should not be ashamed to have that we honor our brothers and sisters together we honor our leadership I'm thankful to have a bishop and first lady You're Not Elected to be a bishop we don't get together and have a vote and tell whether someone's a bishop or not can I read a little book to you about Bishops Titus 1 4 says to Titus my own son after the common Faith grace mercy and peace from God the father and the Lord Jesus Christ of our savior for this cost left left I the increte that thou should have said in order of the things that are wanting that the church church government was being established and ordain Elders in every city as I had upon we have Elders in the church but being an elder and being the wife of an elder being a bishop and being the wife of a bishop is more than a title there's some responsibility that goes along with it the two are one flesh and there's some responsibility that goes along with those things notice this if any be blameless the husband of one wife no now all you folks are going to think I'm being misogynistic but that's okay this is what scripture said if you're the husband of one wife that means you don't have lady Bishops okay y'all can settle down now take it easy having faithful children not a or unruly you raise your family right for a bishop must be blameless as a steward of God not self-willed not soon angry not given to Wine no Striker not given to Filthy Luther but a lover of hospitality a lover of Good Men sober just holy temper holding fast to the faithful word as he has been taught that he may be able by sound Doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gang Sayer sounds like Bishop's picture ought to be there notice for there are many unruly and vain talkers deceivers especially they of the circumcision he was dealing with the super Pious religiosity of that day those who had removed their label they didn't want to be Christians they were holding fast to their Traditions it said whose mouths Must Be Stopped you know what these you stop the mouth of the unruly vein talkers you don't tell them shut up you preach truth you have the knowledge of Doctrine sound doctrine that you can exhort and convince the game Sayer it said whose mouths Must Be Stopped to subvert whole houses teaching things which they ought not for filthy Luther's sake let us honor our Bishop and first lady and be thankful that they have been our example I'm not ashamed to introduce this before I say it's my dad I'll be around town this is Bishop McCool you know what that does a lot of times that opens up the door what do you mean by Bishop and I get to tell them about the founding of our church I get to tell them about what a blessing being part of a multi-generational multi-ethnic church is like we now look the world steals terminology if you look around you this is what diversity should look like diversity is not condoning perversion diversity says we have no prejudices in the house of God there's no room for it diversity should say that we are all God's children that our uniqueness I can't help but get excited there's a gospel song that's fairly new now that says if you want to know what heaven looks like looks like me and you if you want to know what heaven sounds like let it fill the room you see when we come together and the power of the Holy Ghost starts moving the praise team starts leading Us in worship it becomes once again where brothers and sisters we're family we are from diverse backgrounds we are from diverse ethnicities but we are one in Christ that's who we must be if we are to be true Christians this is our message this is what we're going to keep preaching I don't care where you've come from I don't care what your background is we need to say first and foremost I am a child of God I'm a Christian [Applause] Hallelujah and I hasten Titus also said this but speak thou the things which becometh sound doctrine that the age men be sober grave tempered sound and Faith charity and patience we talked about this a little bit last week the age women likewise that they being behaviors becometh Holiness not false accusers not giving them much wine teachers a good thing that they may teach the young women to be sober to love their husbands to love their their children to be discreet Chase keepers at home will beat him to their own husbands that the word of God may not be blasphing young men likewise exhort to be sober minded in all things showing thyself a pattern of good words in Doctrine showing uncorruptibleness gravity sincerity sound speech that cannot be condemned that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed having no evil things to say of you I'm thankful for our aged Saints I'm thankful for Generation after generation and could I say to our Aid Saints thank you for being examples don't stop now how do you identify an aged saint Leviticus 19 30 says ye shall keep my sabbaths and reverence My Sanctuary I am the Lord by the way this is a sacred place it should remain that to us at all times should regard them that have familiar spirits neither seek after Wizards to be defiled by them I am the Lord your God thou shall rise up before the hoary head now that means the white head and honor the face of the old man and fear thy God and I am the Lord the Bible identified the aged man as the hoary head or the gray-headed deserving honor Young Folks middle-aged folks you better honor those folks that around you who Blaze the trail don't you be ashamed to give honor to some of our senior saints that have been faithful they've paved the way for us to be able to dance on carpeted floors while they had Church on gravel floors and dirt floors if it wasn't for them we couldn't do what we're doing today we better continue honoring you Proverbs 20 29 says the glory of a young man is his strength and the beauty of the old man his gray head the new version of that is work smarter not harder you what watch these guys that have a lot of experience they'll figure out how to get something while young guy saying I'll get them wrong I'm going to use my muscles Proverbs 16 31 says the hurry head is a Crown of Glory if it be found in the way of righteousness hmm former vice president Gerald R Ford was asked one time about Ronald Reagan's hair he said he doesn't dye his hair he's just prematurely Orange I know you think I've quit preaching started meddling I said it last week but it dares I dare repeat it again some folks want to go off and try to recapture their youth and they claim it on a midlife crisis and I repeat that's not a midlife crisis you're fighting with that's a midlife devil you ain't trying to wait till your wife turns 40 and turn her in on two twenties age gracefully is an Apostolic in Jesus name Pioneer of the faith don't be ashamed
